घृतक्षीरप्रदा गावो घृतयोन्यो घृतोद्भवाः ।
घृतनद्यो घृतावर्तास्ता मे सन्तु सदा गृहे ॥१॥
1. vasiṣṭha uvāca ,
ghṛtakṣīrapradā gāvo ghṛtayonyo ghṛtodbhavāḥ ,
ghṛtanadyo ghṛtāvartāstā me santu sadā gṛhe.

1. Vasiṣṭha said: May those cows, which bestow clarified butter (ghṛta) and milk, whose very source and origin is clarified butter, and who are like rivers with eddies of clarified butter, always reside in my home.
घृतं मे हृदये नित्यं घृतं नाभ्यां प्रतिष्ठितम् ।
घृतं सर्वेषु गात्रेषु घृतं मे मनसि स्थितम् ॥२॥
2. ghṛtaṁ me hṛdaye nityaṁ ghṛtaṁ nābhyāṁ pratiṣṭhitam ,
ghṛtaṁ sarveṣu gātreṣu ghṛtaṁ me manasi sthitam.
2. ghṛtam me hṛdaye nityam ghṛtam nābhyām pratiṣṭhitam
ghṛtam sarveṣu gātreṣu ghṛtam me manasi sthitam
2. ghṛtam nityam me hṛdaye ghṛtam nābhyām pratiṣṭhitam
ghṛtam sarveṣu gātreṣu ghṛtam me manasi sthitam
2. Clarified butter (ghṛta) is always in my heart; clarified butter is established in my navel. Clarified butter pervades all my limbs; clarified butter is situated in my mind.
गावो ममाग्रतो नित्यं गावः पृष्ठत एव च ।
गावो मे सर्वतश्चैव गवां मध्ये वसाम्यहम् ॥३॥
3. gāvo mamāgrato nityaṁ gāvaḥ pṛṣṭhata eva ca ,
gāvo me sarvataścaiva gavāṁ madhye vasāmyaham.
3. gāvaḥ mama agrataḥ nityam gāvaḥ pṛṣṭhataḥ eva ca
gāvaḥ me sarvataḥ ca eva gavām madhye vasāmi aham
3. nityam mama agrataḥ gāvaḥ.
ca pṛṣṭhataḥ eva gāvaḥ.
ca sarvataḥ eva me gāvaḥ.
aham gavām madhye vasāmi.
3. Cows are always in front of me, and cows are behind me. Cows are everywhere for me, and I dwell among the cows.
इत्याचम्य जपेत्सायं प्रातश्च पुरुषः सदा ।
यदह्ना कुरुते पापं तस्मात्स परिमुच्यते ॥४॥
4. ityācamya japetsāyaṁ prātaśca puruṣaḥ sadā ,
yadahnā kurute pāpaṁ tasmātsa parimucyate.
4. iti ācamya japet sāyam prātaḥ ca puruṣaḥ sadā
yat ahnā kurute pāpam tasmāt saḥ parimucyate
4. iti ācamya puruṣaḥ sadā sāyam ca prātaḥ japet.
saḥ tasmāt pāpam yat ahnā kurute parimucyate.
4. Thus, having sipped water, a man (puruṣa) should always chant in the evening and in the morning. He is freed from whatever sin he commits during the day.
प्रासादा यत्र सौवर्णा वसोर्धारा च यत्र सा ।
गन्धर्वाप्सरसो यत्र तत्र यान्ति सहस्रदाः ॥५॥
5. prāsādā yatra sauvarṇā vasordhārā ca yatra sā ,
gandharvāpsaraso yatra tatra yānti sahasradāḥ.
5. prāsādāḥ yatra sauvarṇāḥ vasoḥ dhārā ca yatra sā
gandharvāpsarasaḥ yatra tatra yānti sahasradāḥ
5. yatra sauvarṇāḥ prāsādāḥ.
ca yatra sā vasoḥ dhārā.
ca yatra gandharvāpsarasaḥ.
tatra sahasradāḥ yānti.
5. Where there are golden palaces, and where that stream of wealth flows, and where Gandharvas and Apsaras reside, there go those who give thousands (of gifts).
नवनीतपङ्काः क्षीरोदा दधिशैवलसंकुलाः ।
वहन्ति यत्र नद्यो वै तत्र यान्ति सहस्रदाः ॥६॥
6. navanītapaṅkāḥ kṣīrodā dadhiśaivalasaṁkulāḥ ,
vahanti yatra nadyo vai tatra yānti sahasradāḥ.
6. navanītapankāḥ kṣīrodāḥ dadhiśaivalasaṅkulāḥ
vahanti yatra nadyaḥ vai tatra yānti sahasradāḥ
6. yatra nadyaḥ vai navanītapankāḥ kṣīrodāḥ dadhiśaivalasaṅkulāḥ vahanti.
tatra sahasradāḥ yānti.
6. Where rivers truly flow with banks of fresh butter, their waters like milk, and thickly covered with moss-like curds, there go those who give thousands (of gifts).
गवां शतसहस्रं तु यः प्रयच्छेद्यथाविधि ।
परामृद्धिमवाप्याथ स गोलोके महीयते ॥७॥
7. gavāṁ śatasahasraṁ tu yaḥ prayacchedyathāvidhi ,
parāmṛddhimavāpyātha sa goloke mahīyate.
7. gavāṃ śatasahasram tu yaḥ prayacchet yathāvidhi
parām ṛddhim avāpya atha sa goloke mahīyate
7. Indeed, one who gives a hundred thousand cows according to the proper injunctions, after attaining supreme prosperity, is honored in the world of cows.
दश चोभयतः प्रेत्य मातापित्रोः पितामहान् ।
दधाति सुकृताँल्लोकान्पुनाति च कुलं नरः ॥८॥
8. daśa cobhayataḥ pretya mātāpitroḥ pitāmahān ,
dadhāti sukṛtāँllokānpunāti ca kulaṁ naraḥ.
8. daśa ca ubhayataḥ pretya mātāpitroḥ pitāmahān
dadhāti sukṛtān lokān punāti ca kulam naraḥ
8. And such a person, upon departing (from this world), sustains ten generations on both sides – parents and grandparents – in virtuous realms, and purifies his family.
धेन्वाः प्रमाणेन समप्रमाणां धेनुं तिलानामपि च प्रदाय ।
पानीयदाता च यमस्य लोके न यातनां कांचिदुपैति तत्र ॥९॥
9. dhenvāḥ pramāṇena samapramāṇāṁ; dhenuṁ tilānāmapi ca pradāya ,
pānīyadātā ca yamasya loke; na yātanāṁ kāṁcidupaiti tatra.
9. dhenvāḥ pramāṇena samapramāṇām dhenum tilānām api ca pradāya
pānīyadātā ca yamasya loke na yātanām kāñcit upaiti tatra
9. And one who gives a cow (made) of sesame seeds, which is of an equal measure to a (real) cow's measure, and also a giver of water, such a person does not experience any torment in the realm of Yama there.
पवित्रमग्र्यं जगतः प्रतिष्ठा दिवौकसां मातरोऽथाप्रमेयाः ।
अन्वालभेद्दक्षिणतो व्रजेच्च दद्याच्च पात्रे प्रसमीक्ष्य कालम् ॥१०॥
10. pavitramagryaṁ jagataḥ pratiṣṭhā; divaukasāṁ mātaro'thāprameyāḥ ,
anvālabheddakṣiṇato vrajecca; dadyācca pātre prasamīkṣya kālam.
10. pavitram agryam jagataḥ pratiṣṭhā
divaukasām mātaraḥ atha aprameyāḥ
anvālabhet dakṣiṇataḥ vrajet ca
dadyāt ca pātre prasamīkṣya kālam
10. They (cows) are the supreme purifiers, the support of the world, mothers of the gods, and immeasurable. One should touch them from the right (south), circumambulate them, and give (offerings) to a deserving person after carefully considering the proper time.
धेनुं सवत्सां कपिलां भूरिशृङ्गां कांस्योपदोहां वसनोत्तरीयाम् ।
प्रदाय तां गाहति दुर्विगाह्यां याम्यां सभां वीतभयो मनुष्यः ॥११॥
11. dhenuṁ savatsāṁ kapilāṁ bhūriśṛṅgāṁ; kāṁsyopadohāṁ vasanottarīyām ,
pradāya tāṁ gāhati durvigāhyāṁ; yāmyāṁ sabhāṁ vītabhayo manuṣyaḥ.
11. dhenum savatsām kapilām bhūriśṛṅgām
kāṃsyopadohām vasanottarīyām
| pradāya tām gāhati durvigāhyām
yāmyām sabhām vītabhayaḥ manuṣyaḥ
11. manuṣyaḥ vītabhayaḥ savatsām
kapilām bhūriśṛṅgām kāṃsyopadohām
vasanottarīyām dhenum tām pradāya
durvigāhyām yāmyām sabhām gāhati
11. A man, free from fear, by offering a tawny cow along with her calf, possessing ample horns, whose milk is drawn into a bronze vessel, and who is adorned with a cloth and an upper garment, enters Yama's assembly (yāmyām sabhām), which is otherwise difficult to access.
सुरूपा बहुरूपाश्च विश्वरूपाश्च मातरः ।
गावो मामुपतिष्ठन्तामिति नित्यं प्रकीर्तयेत् ॥१२॥
12. surūpā bahurūpāśca viśvarūpāśca mātaraḥ ,
gāvo māmupatiṣṭhantāmiti nityaṁ prakīrtayet.
12. surūpāḥ bahurūpāḥ ca viśvarūpāḥ ca mātaraḥ |
gāvaḥ mām upatiṣṭhantām iti nityam prakīrtayet
12. surūpāḥ bahurūpāḥ ca viśvarūpāḥ ca mātaraḥ
gāvaḥ mām upatiṣṭhantām iti nityam prakīrtayet
12. May the mothers - beautiful in form, manifold in form, and universal in form - the cows, attend upon me. One should always recite this [prayer].
नातः पुण्यतरं दानं नातः पुण्यतरं फलम् ।
नातो विशिष्टं लोकेषु भूतं भवितुमर्हति ॥१३॥
13. nātaḥ puṇyataraṁ dānaṁ nātaḥ puṇyataraṁ phalam ,
nāto viśiṣṭaṁ lokeṣu bhūtaṁ bhavitumarhati.
13. na ataḥ puṇyatāram dānam na ataḥ puṇyatāram phalam
| na ataḥ viśiṣṭam lokeṣu bhūtam bhavitum arhati
13. dānam ataḥ puṇyatāram na; phalam ataḥ puṇyatāram
na; lokeṣu ataḥ viśiṣṭam bhūtam bhavitum na arhati
13. There is no gift (dāna) more meritorious than this, nor a result more meritorious than this. Nothing superior to this can exist in the worlds.
त्वचा लोम्नाथ शृङ्गैश्च वालैः क्षीरेण मेदसा ।
यज्ञं वहन्ति संभूय किमस्त्यभ्यधिकं ततः ॥१४॥
14. tvacā lomnātha śṛṅgaiśca vālaiḥ kṣīreṇa medasā ,
yajñaṁ vahanti saṁbhūya kimastyabhyadhikaṁ tataḥ.
14. tvacā lomnā atha śṛṅgaiḥ ca vālaiḥ kṣīreṇa medasā |
yajñam vahanti sambhūya kim asti abhyadhikam tataḥ
14. tvacā lomnā atha śṛṅgaiḥ ca vālaiḥ kṣīreṇa medasā sambhūya yajñam vahanti.
tataḥ abhyadhikam kim asti?
14. With skin, body hair, horns, coarse hair, milk, and fat, they collectively sustain the Vedic ritual (yajña). What is there greater than that?
यया सर्वमिदं व्याप्तं जगत्स्थावरजङ्गमम् ।
तां धेनुं शिरसा वन्दे भूतभव्यस्य मातरम् ॥१५॥
15. yayā sarvamidaṁ vyāptaṁ jagatsthāvarajaṅgamam ,
tāṁ dhenuṁ śirasā vande bhūtabhavyasya mātaram.
15. yayā sarvam idam vyāptam jagat sthāvara-jaṅgamam
tām dhenum śirasā vande bhūta-bhavyasya mātaram
15. aham yayā idam sarvam sthāvara-jaṅgamam jagat vyāptam,
bhūta-bhavyasya mātaram tām dhenum śirasā vande
15. I bow my head to that cow by whom this entire world, both unmoving and moving, is pervaded, the mother of past and future.
गुणवचनसमुच्चयैकदेशो नृवर मयैष गवां प्रकीर्तितस्ते ।
न हि परमिह दानमस्ति गोभ्यो भवन्ति न चापि परायणं तथान्यत् ॥१६॥
16. guṇavacanasamuccayaikadeśo; nṛvara mayaiṣa gavāṁ prakīrtitaste ,
na hi paramiha dānamasti gobhyo; bhavanti na cāpi parāyaṇaṁ tathānyat.
16. guṇa-vacana-samuccayaika-deśaḥ nṛvara
mayā eṣaḥ gavām prakīrtitaḥ te na
hi param iha dānam asti gobhyaḥ bhavanti
na ca api parāyaṇam tathā anyat
16. nṛvara,
mayā eṣaḥ gavām guṇa-vacana-samuccayaika-deśaḥ te prakīrtitaḥ.
hi iha gobhyaḥ param dānam na asti,
ca tathā anyat parāyaṇam api na bhavanti
16. O best among men, this description of a fraction of the many qualities of cows has been proclaimed by me to you. Indeed, there is no higher act of giving (dāna) in this world than that of cows, nor is any other ultimate refuge (parāyaṇam) like it.
भीष्म उवाच ।
परमिदमिति भूमिपो विचिन्त्य प्रवरमृषेर्वचनं ततो महात्मा ।
व्यसृजत नियतात्मवान्द्विजेभ्यः सुबहु च गोधनमाप्तवांश्च लोकान् ॥१७॥
17. bhīṣma uvāca ,
paramidamiti bhūmipo vicintya; pravaramṛṣervacanaṁ tato mahātmā ,
vyasṛjata niyatātmavāndvijebhyaḥ; subahu ca godhanamāptavāṁśca lokān.
17. bhīṣmaḥ uvāca param idam iti bhūmipaḥ
vicintya pravara-ṛṣeḥ vacanam tataḥ
mahātmā vyasṛjata niyata-ātma-vān dvijebhyaḥ
subahu ca godhanam āptavān ca lokān
17. bhīṣmaḥ uvāca: bhūmipaḥ,
niyata-ātma-vān mahātmā,
pravara-ṛṣeḥ idam param vacanam iti vicintya,
tataḥ dvijebhyaḥ subahu godhanam vyasṛjata ca lokān āptavān
17. Bhishma said: Having thus considered this excellent statement of the foremost sage, that great-souled king, being self-controlled, then distributed a great many cattle to the Brahmins and also attained (higher) worlds.
