वैशंपायन उवाच ।
एवमुक्त्वा तु गान्धारी कुरूणामाविकर्तनम् ।
अपश्यत्तत्र तिष्ठन्ती सर्वं दिव्येन चक्षुषा ॥१॥

1. Vaiśaṃpāyana said: Having spoken these words, Gāndhārī, standing at that spot, perceived the complete destruction of the Kurus with her divine sight.
पतिव्रता महाभागा समानव्रतचारिणी ।
उग्रेण तपसा युक्ता सततं सत्यवादिनी ॥२॥

2. She was a chaste (pativratā) and highly fortunate woman, observing the same vows [as her husband]. Endowed with intense asceticism (tapas), she was always truthful.
वरदानेन कृष्णस्य महर्षेः पुण्यकर्मणः ।
दिव्यज्ञानबलोपेता विविधं पर्यदेवयत् ॥३॥

3. Due to the boon (vara) granted by Krishna, the great sage (maharṣi) of meritorious deeds, she, endowed with divine knowledge and strength, lamented in many ways.
ददर्श सा बुद्धिमती दूरादपि यथान्तिके ।
रणाजिरं नृवीराणामद्भुतं लोमहर्षणम् ॥४॥
4. dadarśa sā buddhimatī dūrādapi yathāntike ,
raṇājiraṁ nṛvīrāṇāmadbhutaṁ lomaharṣaṇam.

4. That intelligent woman saw, even from a distance as if it were near, the wondrous and hair-raising battlefield of the human heroes.
अस्थिकेशपरिस्तीर्णं शोणितौघपरिप्लुतम् ।
शरीरैर्बहुसाहस्रैर्विनिकीर्णं समन्ततः ॥५॥
5. asthikeśaparistīrṇaṁ śoṇitaughapariplutam ,
śarīrairbahusāhasrairvinikīrṇaṁ samantataḥ.

5. It was strewn with bones and hair, deluged by torrents of blood, and scattered everywhere with thousands of bodies.
गजाश्वरथयोधानामावृतं रुधिराविलैः ।
शरीरैरशिरस्कैश्च विदेहैश्च शिरोगणैः ॥६॥
6. gajāśvarathayodhānāmāvṛtaṁ rudhirāvilaiḥ ,
śarīrairaśiraskaiśca videhaiśca śirogaṇaiḥ.

6. It was covered with the blood-stained bodies of elephants, horses, chariots, and warriors, including headless bodies and numerous severed heads.
गजाश्वनरवीराणां निःसत्त्वैरभिसंवृतम् ।
सृगालबडकाकोलकङ्ककाकनिषेवितम् ॥७॥
7. gajāśvanaravīrāṇāṁ niḥsattvairabhisaṁvṛtam ,
sṛgālabaḍakākolakaṅkakākaniṣevitam.
7. gajāśvanaravīrāṇām niḥsattvaiḥ abhisaṃvṛtam
sṛgālabhaḍakākōlakankakākiniṣevitam

7. It was completely covered with the lifeless bodies of elephants, horses, and human warriors, and frequented by jackals, ravens, vultures, and crows.
रक्षसां पुरुषादानां मोदनं कुरराकुलम् ।
अशिवाभिः शिवाभिश्च नादितं गृध्रसेवितम् ॥८॥
8. rakṣasāṁ puruṣādānāṁ modanaṁ kurarākulam ,
aśivābhiḥ śivābhiśca nāditaṁ gṛdhrasevitam.

8. It was a delight for the man-eating demons (rakṣasas), filled with noisy curlews, resounding with the cries of both inauspicious and other she-jackals, and frequented by vultures.
ततो व्यासाभ्यनुज्ञातो धृतराष्ट्रो महीपतिः ।
पाण्डुपुत्राश्च ते सर्वे युधिष्ठिरपुरोगमाः ॥९॥
9. tato vyāsābhyanujñāto dhṛtarāṣṭro mahīpatiḥ ,
pāṇḍuputrāśca te sarve yudhiṣṭhirapurogamāḥ.

9. Thereafter, King Dhritarashtra, having been permitted by Vyasa, and all those sons of Pandu with Yudhishthira at their forefront...
वासुदेवं पुरस्कृत्य हतबन्धुं च पार्थिवम् ।
कुरुस्त्रियः समासाद्य जग्मुरायोधनं प्रति ॥१०॥
10. vāsudevaṁ puraskṛtya hatabandhuṁ ca pārthivam ,
kurustriyaḥ samāsādya jagmurāyodhanaṁ prati.

10. Placing Vāsudeva (Krishna) at the forefront, and accompanied by the king whose relatives had been slain, the Kuru women approached the battlefield.
समासाद्य कुरुक्षेत्रं ताः स्त्रियो निहतेश्वराः ।
अपश्यन्त हतांस्तत्र पुत्रान्भ्रातॄन्पितॄन्पतीन् ॥११॥
11. samāsādya kurukṣetraṁ tāḥ striyo nihateśvarāḥ ,
apaśyanta hatāṁstatra putrānbhrātṝnpitṝnpatīn.

11. Upon reaching Kurukshetra, those women, whose lords had been slain, saw their sons, brothers, fathers, and husbands lying dead there.
क्रव्यादैर्भक्ष्यमाणान्वै गोमायुबडवायसैः ।
भूतैः पिशाचै रक्षोभिर्विविधैश्च निशाचरैः ॥१२॥
12. kravyādairbhakṣyamāṇānvai gomāyubaḍavāyasaiḥ ,
bhūtaiḥ piśācai rakṣobhirvividhaiśca niśācaraiḥ.
12. kravyādaiḥ bhakṣyamāṇān vai gomāyubaḍavāyasaiḥ
bhūtaiḥ piśācaiḥ rakṣobhiḥ vividhaiḥ ca niśācaraiḥ

12. Indeed, they were being devoured by carrion-eating creatures, by jackals and vultures, as well as by various ghosts, goblins, rākṣasas, and night-stalkers.
रुद्राक्रीडनिभं दृष्ट्वा तदा विशसनं स्त्रियः ।
महार्हेभ्योऽथ यानेभ्यो विक्रोशन्त्यो निपेतिरे ॥१३॥
13. rudrākrīḍanibhaṁ dṛṣṭvā tadā viśasanaṁ striyaḥ ,
mahārhebhyo'tha yānebhyo vikrośantyo nipetire.
13. rudrākṛḍa-nibham dṛṣṭvā tadā viśasanam striyaḥ
mahārhebhyaḥ atha yānebhyaḥ vikrośantyaḥ nipetire
13. striyaḥ tadā rudrākṛḍa-nibham viśasanam dṛṣṭvā

13. When the women saw that slaughter, which resembled Rudra's playground, they then wailed loudly and fell down from their costly conveyances.
अदृष्टपूर्वं पश्यन्त्यो दुःखार्ता भरतस्त्रियः ।
शरीरेष्वस्खलन्नन्या न्यपतंश्चापरा भुवि ॥१४॥
14. adṛṣṭapūrvaṁ paśyantyo duḥkhārtā bharatastriyaḥ ,
śarīreṣvaskhalannanyā nyapataṁścāparā bhuvi.
14. adṛṣṭapūrvam paśyantyaḥ duḥkhārtāḥ bharatastriyaḥ
śarīreṣu askhalan anyāḥ nyapatan ca aparāḥ bhuvi

14. Beholding a sight never seen before, the Bharata women, afflicted with sorrow, some stumbled over the bodies, while others fell to the ground.
श्रान्तानां चाप्यनाथानां नासीत्काचन चेतना ।
पाञ्चालकुरुयोषाणां कृपणं तदभून्महत् ॥१५॥
15. śrāntānāṁ cāpyanāthānāṁ nāsītkācana cetanā ,
pāñcālakuruyoṣāṇāṁ kṛpaṇaṁ tadabhūnmahat.
15. śrāntānām ca api anāthānām na āsīt kācana cetanā
pāñcālakuruyoṣāṇām kṛpaṇam tat abhūt mahat
15. śrāntānām ca api anāthānām pāñcālakuruyoṣāṇām

15. For the weary and helpless Pañcāla and Kuru women, there was no consciousness or awareness. Their suffering was truly great and pitiable.
दुःखोपहतचित्ताभिः समन्तादनुनादितम् ।
दृष्ट्वायोधनमत्युग्रं धर्मज्ञा सुबलात्मजा ॥१६॥
16. duḥkhopahatacittābhiḥ samantādanunāditam ,
dṛṣṭvāyodhanamatyugraṁ dharmajñā subalātmajā.
16. duḥkhopahatacittābhiḥ samantāt anunāditam dṛṣṭvā
āyodhanam ati ugram dharmajñā subalātmajā
16. dharmajñā subalātmajā duḥkhopahatacittābhiḥ

16. Gāndhārī (Subalātmajā), who understood (dharma), having seen that exceedingly dreadful battlefield, which was filled with the sounds of lamentation from women whose hearts were shattered by grief.
ततः सा पुण्डरीकाक्षमामन्त्र्य पुरुषोत्तमम् ।
कुरूणां वैशसं दृष्ट्वा दुःखाद्वचनमब्रवीत् ॥१७॥
17. tataḥ sā puṇḍarīkākṣamāmantrya puruṣottamam ,
kurūṇāṁ vaiśasaṁ dṛṣṭvā duḥkhādvacanamabravīt.
17. tataḥ sā puṇḍarīkākṣam āmantrya puruṣottamam
kurūṇām vaiśasam dṛṣṭvā duḥkhāt vacanam abravīt

17. Then she (Gāndhārī), having addressed the lotus-eyed supreme cosmic person (puruṣottama) (Kṛṣṇa), and having witnessed the destruction of the Kurus, spoke words born of her profound sorrow.
पश्यैताः पुण्डरीकाक्ष स्नुषा मे निहतेश्वराः ।
प्रकीर्णकेशाः क्रोशन्तीः कुररीरिव माधव ॥१८॥
18. paśyaitāḥ puṇḍarīkākṣa snuṣā me nihateśvarāḥ ,
prakīrṇakeśāḥ krośantīḥ kurarīriva mādhava.
18. paśya etāḥ puṇḍarīkākṣa snuṣāḥ me nihateśvarāḥ
prakīrṇakeśāḥ krośantīḥ kurarīḥ iva mādhava
18. mādhava puṇḍarīkākṣa me nihateśvarāḥ prakīrṇakeśāḥ
kurarīḥ iva krośantīḥ etāḥ snuṣāḥ paśya
18. O Lotus-eyed one (puṇḍarīkākṣa), O Mādhava, behold these my daughters-in-law, whose husbands have been slain, with dishevelled hair, crying out like ospreys.
अमूस्त्वभिसमागम्य स्मरन्त्यो भरतर्षभान् ।
पृथगेवाभ्यधावन्त पुत्रान्भ्रातॄन्पितॄन्पतीन् ॥१९॥
19. amūstvabhisamāgamya smarantyo bharatarṣabhān ,
pṛthagevābhyadhāvanta putrānbhrātṝnpitṝnpatīn.
19. amūḥ tu abhisamāgamya smarantyaḥ bharatarṣabhān
pṛthak eva abhyadhāvanta putrān bhrātṝn pitṝn patīn
19. tu amūḥ abhisamāgamya bharatarṣabhān smarantyaḥ
pṛthak eva putrān bhrātṝn pitṝn patīn abhyadhāvanta
19. But those women, having gathered together and remembering the best among the Bhāratas, indeed ran separately towards their sons, brothers, fathers, and husbands.
वीरसूभिर्महाबाहो हतपुत्राभिरावृतम् ।
क्वचिच्च वीरपत्नीभिर्हतवीराभिराकुलम् ॥२०॥
20. vīrasūbhirmahābāho hataputrābhirāvṛtam ,
kvacicca vīrapatnībhirhatavīrābhirākulam.
20. vīrasūbhiḥ mahābāho hataputrābhiḥ āvṛtam
kvacit ca vīrapatnībhiḥ hatavīrābhiḥ ākulam
20. mahābāho hataputrābhiḥ vīrasūbhiḥ āvṛtam ca
kvacit hatavīrābhiḥ vīrapatnībhiḥ ākulam
20. O mighty-armed one (mahābāho), (the battlefield is) covered by mothers of heroes whose sons have been slain, and in some places, it is filled with wives of heroes whose husbands have been slain.
शोभितं पुरुषव्याघ्रैर्भीष्मकर्णाभिमन्युभिः ।
द्रोणद्रुपदशल्यैश्च ज्वलद्भिरिव पावकैः ॥२१॥
21. śobhitaṁ puruṣavyāghrairbhīṣmakarṇābhimanyubhiḥ ,
droṇadrupadaśalyaiśca jvaladbhiriva pāvakaiḥ.
21. śobhitam puruṣavyāghraiḥ bhīṣmakarṇābhimanyubhiḥ
droṇadrupadaśalyaiḥ ca jvaladbhiḥ iva pāvakaiḥ

21. (The battlefield is) adorned by tiger-like men (puruṣavyāghra), like blazing fires, such as Bhīṣma, Karṇa, Abhimanyu, Droṇa, Drupada, and Śalya.
काञ्चनैः कवचैर्निष्कैर्मणिभिश्च महात्मनाम् ।
अङ्गदैर्हस्तकेयूरैः स्रग्भिश्च समलंकृतम् ॥२२॥
22. kāñcanaiḥ kavacairniṣkairmaṇibhiśca mahātmanām ,
aṅgadairhastakeyūraiḥ sragbhiśca samalaṁkṛtam.
22. kāñcanaiḥ kavacaiḥ niṣkaiḥ maṇibhiḥ ca mahātmanām
aṅgadaiḥ hastakeyūraiḥ sragbhiḥ ca samalaṅkṛtam
22. mahātmanām kāñcanaiḥ kavacaiḥ niṣkaiḥ ca maṇibhiḥ
aṅgadaiḥ hastakeyūraiḥ ca sragbhiḥ samalaṅkṛtam
22. It was well adorned with golden armors, necklaces, and jewels belonging to great-souled (ātman) beings, as well as with armlets, wrist-bracelets, and garlands.
वीरबाहुविसृष्टाभिः शक्तिभिः परिघैरपि ।
खड्गैश्च विमलैस्तीक्ष्णैः सशरैश्च शरासनैः ॥२३॥
23. vīrabāhuvisṛṣṭābhiḥ śaktibhiḥ parighairapi ,
khaḍgaiśca vimalaistīkṣṇaiḥ saśaraiśca śarāsanaiḥ.
23. vīrabāhuvisṛṣṭābhiḥ śaktibhiḥ parighaiḥ api khaḍgaiḥ
ca vimalaiḥ tīkṣṇaiḥ saśaraiḥ ca śarāsanaiḥ

vimalaiḥ tīkṣṇaiḥ khaḍgaiḥ ca saśaraiḥ śarāsanaiḥ
23. It was also adorned with spears (śakti) hurled by the powerful arms of warriors, with iron clubs, with spotless and sharp swords, and with bows accompanied by arrows.
क्रव्यादसंघैर्मुदितैस्तिष्ठद्भिः सहितैः क्वचित् ।
क्वचिदाक्रीडमानैश्च शयानैरपरैः क्वचित् ॥२४॥
24. kravyādasaṁghairmuditaistiṣṭhadbhiḥ sahitaiḥ kvacit ,
kvacidākrīḍamānaiśca śayānairaparaiḥ kvacit.
24. kravyādasaṅghaiḥ muditaiḥ tiṣṭhadbhiḥ sahitaiḥ kvacit
kvacit ākrīḍamānaiḥ ca śayānaiḥ aparaiḥ kvacit
24. kvacit muditaiḥ kravyādasaṅghaiḥ sahitaiḥ tiṣṭhadbhiḥ,
ca kvacit ākrīḍamānaiḥ,
kvacit aparaiḥ śayānaiḥ
24. And here and there, it was filled with joyful groups of scavengers, some standing together, others playing, and still others lying down.
एतदेवंविधं वीर संपश्यायोधनं विभो ।
पश्यमाना च दह्यामि शोकेनाहं जनार्दन ॥२५॥
25. etadevaṁvidhaṁ vīra saṁpaśyāyodhanaṁ vibho ,
paśyamānā ca dahyāmi śokenāhaṁ janārdana.
25. etat evaṃvidham vīra saṃpaśya āyodhanam vibho
paśyamānā ca dahyāmi śokena aham janārdana
25. vīra vibho (tvam) etat evaṃvidham āyodhanam saṃpaśya,
ca janārdana aham paśyamānā śokena dahyāmi
25. O hero (vīra), O all-pervading Lord (vibhu), behold this kind of battlefield! And seeing it, O Janardana, I am consumed by grief.
पाञ्चालानां कुरूणां च विनाशं मधुसूदन ।
पञ्चानामिव भूतानां नाहं वधमचिन्तयम् ॥२६॥
26. pāñcālānāṁ kurūṇāṁ ca vināśaṁ madhusūdana ,
pañcānāmiva bhūtānāṁ nāhaṁ vadhamacintayam.
26. pāñcālānām kurūṇām ca vināśam madhusūdana
pañcānām iva bhūtānām na aham vadham acintayam
26. madhusūdana,
aham pāñcālānām kurūṇām ca vināśam pañcānām bhūtānām iva vadham na acintayam
26. O Madhusūdana, I did not anticipate the destruction of the Pāñcālas and the Kurus, any more than one would expect the annihilation of the five fundamental elements (bhūta).
तान्सुपर्णाश्च गृध्राश्च निष्कर्षन्त्यसृगुक्षितान् ।
निगृह्य कवचेषूग्रा भक्षयन्ति सहस्रशः ॥२७॥
27. tānsuparṇāśca gṛdhrāśca niṣkarṣantyasṛgukṣitān ,
nigṛhya kavaceṣūgrā bhakṣayanti sahasraśaḥ.
27. tān suparṇāḥ ca gṛdhrāḥ ca nikarṣanti asṛk-ukṣitān
nigṛhya kavaceṣu ugrāḥ bhakṣayanti sahasraśaḥ
27. suparṇāḥ ca gṛdhrāḥ ca ugrāḥ asṛk-ukṣitān tān
kavaceṣu nigṛhya nikarṣanti sahasraśaḥ bhakṣayanti
27. Eagles and vultures drag those warriors, drenched in blood, from the battlefield. Fierce predators grasp them even in their armor and devour them by the thousands.
जयद्रथस्य कर्णस्य तथैव द्रोणभीष्मयोः ।
अभिमन्योर्विनाशं च कश्चिन्तयितुमर्हति ॥२८॥
28. jayadrathasya karṇasya tathaiva droṇabhīṣmayoḥ ,
abhimanyorvināśaṁ ca kaścintayitumarhati.
28. jayadrathasya karṇasya tathā eva droṇa-bhīṣmayoḥ
abhimanyūḥ vināśam ca kaḥ cintayitum arhati
28. kaḥ jayadrathasya karṇasya tathā eva droṇa-bhīṣmayoḥ

28. Who could possibly have imagined the destruction of Jayadratha, Karṇa, and likewise, of Droṇa and Bhīṣma, as well as Abhimanyu's ruin?
अवध्यकल्पान्निहतान्दृष्ट्वाहं मधुसूदन ।
गृध्रकङ्कबडश्येनश्वसृगालादनीकृतान् ॥२९॥
29. avadhyakalpānnihatāndṛṣṭvāhaṁ madhusūdana ,

29. O Madhusūdana, when I saw those who were virtually invincible, slain and turned into food for vultures, kites, large hawks, dogs, and jackals...
अमर्षवशमापन्नान्दुर्योधनवशे स्थितान् ।
पश्येमान्पुरुषव्याघ्रान्संशान्तान्पावकानिव ॥३०॥
30. amarṣavaśamāpannānduryodhanavaśe sthitān ,
paśyemānpuruṣavyāghrānsaṁśāntānpāvakāniva.

30. Behold these tiger-like men, who had fallen under the sway of indignation and remained under Duryodhana's control, now extinguished like fires.
शयनान्युचिताः सर्वे मृदूनि विमलानि च ।
विपन्नास्तेऽद्य वसुधां विवृतामधिशेरते ॥३१॥
31. śayanānyucitāḥ sarve mṛdūni vimalāni ca ,
vipannāste'dya vasudhāṁ vivṛtāmadhiśerate.

vipannāḥ te adya vasudhām vivṛtām adhiśerate

31. All those who were accustomed to soft and pure beds, they have perished and today lie upon the bare earth.
बन्दिभिः सततं काले स्तुवद्भिरभिनन्दिताः ।
शिवानामशिवा घोराः शृण्वन्ति विविधा गिरः ॥३२॥
32. bandibhiḥ satataṁ kāle stuvadbhirabhinanditāḥ ,
śivānāmaśivā ghorāḥ śṛṇvanti vividhā giraḥ.
32. bandibhiḥ satatam kāle stuvadbhiḥ abhinanditāḥ
śivānām aśivāḥ ghorāḥ śṛṇvanti vividhāḥ giraḥ

32. Those who were constantly acclaimed by praising bards at the appropriate time now hear various inauspicious and terrible sounds (of jackals).
ये पुरा शेरते वीराः शयनेषु यशस्विनः ।
चन्दनागुरुदिग्धाङ्गास्तेऽद्य पांसुषु शेरते ॥३३॥
33. ye purā śerate vīrāḥ śayaneṣu yaśasvinaḥ ,
candanāgurudigdhāṅgāste'dya pāṁsuṣu śerate.

33. Those glorious heroes, whose bodies were formerly smeared with sandalwood and agaru and who lay on beds, today lie in the dust.
तेषामाभरणान्येते गृध्रगोमायुवायसाः ।
आक्षिपन्त्यशिवा घोरा विनदन्तः पुनः पुनः ॥३४॥
34. teṣāmābharaṇānyete gṛdhragomāyuvāyasāḥ ,
ākṣipantyaśivā ghorā vinadantaḥ punaḥ punaḥ.

34. These dreadful and terrifying vultures, jackals, and crows shriek repeatedly as they snatch away the ornaments from those fallen warriors.
चापानि विशिखान्पीतान्निस्त्रिंशान्विमला गदाः ।
युद्धाभिमानिनः प्रीता जीवन्त इव बिभ्रति ॥३५॥
35. cāpāni viśikhānpītānnistriṁśānvimalā gadāḥ ,
yuddhābhimāninaḥ prītā jīvanta iva bibhrati.

35. The warriors, proud of their combat (yuddha) and still content, hold bows, gleaming arrows, spotless swords, and maces, as if they were still alive.
सुरूपवर्णा बहवः क्रव्यादैरवघट्टिताः ।
ऋषभप्रतिरूपाक्षाः शेरते हरितस्रजः ॥३६॥
36. surūpavarṇā bahavaḥ kravyādairavaghaṭṭitāḥ ,
ṛṣabhapratirūpākṣāḥ śerate haritasrajaḥ.

36. Many (warriors), once of beautiful form and complexion, lie mangled by carnivores, their bull-like eyes fixed, still adorned with green garlands.
अपरे पुनरालिङ्ग्य गदाः परिघबाहवः ।
शेरतेऽभिमुखाः शूरा दयिता इव योषितः ॥३७॥
37. apare punarāliṅgya gadāḥ parighabāhavaḥ ,
śerate'bhimukhāḥ śūrā dayitā iva yoṣitaḥ.

37. Furthermore, other brave warriors, with arms like iron bars (parigha), lie embracing their maces, facing forward, just as beloved women would embrace their lovers.
बिभ्रतः कवचान्यन्ये विमलान्यायुधानि च ।
न धर्षयन्ति क्रव्यादा जीवन्तीति जनार्दन ॥३८॥
38. bibhrataḥ kavacānyanye vimalānyāyudhāni ca ,
na dharṣayanti kravyādā jīvantīti janārdana.

38. O Janardana, the flesh-eating animals (kravyāda) do not dare to attack those brave warriors, even after they have fallen, who bear pure armors and weapons, as if (iti) thinking they are still alive (jīvanti).
क्रव्यादैः कृष्यमाणानामपरेषां महात्मनाम् ।
शातकौम्भ्यः स्रजश्चित्रा विप्रकीर्णाः समन्ततः ॥३९॥
39. kravyādaiḥ kṛṣyamāṇānāmapareṣāṁ mahātmanām ,
śātakaumbhyaḥ srajaścitrā viprakīrṇāḥ samantataḥ.

39. Golden (śātakauṁbhya) and colorful (citra) garlands (sraj) lie scattered (viprakīrṇa) all around (samantataḥ) from other great-souled (mahātman) warriors who are being dragged away by the flesh-eating animals (kravyāda).
एते गोमायवो भीमा निहतानां यशस्विनाम् ।
कण्ठान्तरगतान्हारानाक्षिपन्ति सहस्रशः ॥४०॥
40. ete gomāyavo bhīmā nihatānāṁ yaśasvinām ,
kaṇṭhāntaragatānhārānākṣipanti sahasraśaḥ.

40. These terrible (bhīma) jackals (gomāyava) snatch away (ākṣipanti) by the thousands (sahasraśaḥ) the necklaces (hāra) that adorn the necks of the slain (nihata) and glorious (yaśasvin) warriors.
सर्वेष्वपररात्रेषु याननन्दन्त बन्दिनः ।
स्तुतिभिश्च परार्ध्याभिरुपचारैश्च शिक्षिताः ॥४१॥
41. sarveṣvapararātreṣu yānanandanta bandinaḥ ,
stutibhiśca parārdhyābhirupacāraiśca śikṣitāḥ.

stutibhiḥ ca parārghyābhiḥ upacāraiḥ ca śikṣitāḥ

41. In all the late nights (apararātreṣu), the bards (bandin), who were skilled (śikṣita) with praises (stuti) and most excellent (parārghya) services (upacāra), used to delight (anandanta) those (warriors).
तानिमाः परिदेवन्ति दुःखार्ताः परमाङ्गनाः ।
कृपणं वृष्णिशार्दूल दुःखशोकार्दिता भृशम् ॥४२॥
42. tānimāḥ paridevanti duḥkhārtāḥ paramāṅganāḥ ,
kṛpaṇaṁ vṛṣṇiśārdūla duḥkhaśokārditā bhṛśam.
42. tāni imāḥ paridevanti duḥkhārtāḥ paramāṅganāḥ
kṛpaṇam vṛṣṇiśārdūla duḥkhaśokārtitā bhṛśam
42. vṛṣṇiśārdūla imāḥ paramāṅganāḥ duḥkhārtāḥ
duḥkhaśokārtitā bhṛśam tāni kṛpaṇam paridevanti
42. O best of the Vṛṣṇis, these noble women, deeply distressed by sorrow and grief, lament piteously over those [circumstances].
रक्तोत्पलवनानीव विभान्ति रुचिराणि वै ।
मुखानि परमस्त्रीणां परिशुष्काणि केशव ॥४३॥
43. raktotpalavanānīva vibhānti rucirāṇi vai ,
mukhāni paramastrīṇāṁ pariśuṣkāṇi keśava.
43. rakta utpalavanāni iva vibhānti rucirāṇi
vai mukhāni paramastrīṇām pariśuṣkāṇi keśava

43. O Keśava, the beautiful faces of the noble women, though now completely withered, certainly shine like groves of red lotuses.
रुदितोपरता ह्येता ध्यायन्त्यः संपरिप्लुताः ।
कुरुस्त्रियोऽभिगच्छन्ति तेन तेनैव दुःखिताः ॥४४॥
44. ruditoparatā hyetā dhyāyantyaḥ saṁpariplutāḥ ,
kurustriyo'bhigacchanti tena tenaiva duḥkhitāḥ.
44. rudita uparatāḥ hi etāḥ dhyāyantyaḥ sampariplutāḥ
kurustriyaḥ abhigacchanti tena tena eva duḥkhitāḥ
44. hi etāḥ kurustriyaḥ rudita uparatāḥ sampariplutāḥ
duḥkhitāḥ tena tena eva dhyāyantyaḥ abhigacchanti
44. Indeed, these Kuru women, having ceased their weeping, yet completely overwhelmed and distressed, wander about, meditating on that very [suffering].
एतान्यादित्यवर्णानि तपनीयनिभानि च ।
रोषरोदनताम्राणि वक्त्राणि कुरुयोषिताम् ॥४५॥
45. etānyādityavarṇāni tapanīyanibhāni ca ,
roṣarodanatāmrāṇi vaktrāṇi kuruyoṣitām.

roṣarodanatāmrāṇi vaktrāṇi kuruyoṣitām

45. And these faces of the Kuru women, which were sun-colored and brilliant like molten gold, are now coppery red from anger and weeping.
आसामपरिपूर्णार्थं निशम्य परिदेवितम् ।
इतरेतरसंक्रन्दान्न विजानन्ति योषितः ॥४६॥
46. āsāmaparipūrṇārthaṁ niśamya paridevitam ,
itaretarasaṁkrandānna vijānanti yoṣitaḥ.
46. āsām aparipūrṇārtham niśamya paridevitam
itare-itara-saṃkrandāt na vijānanti yoṣitaḥ

46. After hearing their own incomplete lamentations, the women, amid their mutual cries, are unable to comprehend (what has happened).
एता दीर्घमिवोच्छ्वस्य विक्रुश्य च विलप्य च ।
विस्पन्दमाना दुःखेन वीरा जहति जीवितम् ॥४७॥
47. etā dīrghamivocchvasya vikruśya ca vilapya ca ,
vispandamānā duḥkhena vīrā jahati jīvitam.
47. etāḥ dīrgham iva ucchvasya vikruśya ca vilapya
ca vispandamānāḥ duḥkhena vīrāḥ jahati jīvitam
47. etāḥ vīrāḥ dīrgham iva ucchvasya,

47. These women, sighing deeply as it were, and having cried out and wailed, abandon their lives, trembling with sorrow.
बह्व्यो दृष्ट्वा शरीराणि क्रोशन्ति विलपन्ति च ।
पाणिभिश्चापरा घ्नन्ति शिरांसि मृदुपाणयः ॥४८॥
48. bahvyo dṛṣṭvā śarīrāṇi krośanti vilapanti ca ,
pāṇibhiścāparā ghnanti śirāṁsi mṛdupāṇayaḥ.
48. bahvyaḥ dṛṣṭvā śarīrāṇi krośanti vilapanti ca
pāṇibhiḥ ca aparāḥ ghnanti śirāṃsi mṛdu-pāṇayaḥ

48. Many women, having seen the bodies, cry out and lament. And others, with their soft hands, strike their heads.
शिरोभिः पतितैर्हस्तैः सर्वाङ्गैर्यूथशः कृतैः ।
इतरेतरसंपृक्तैराकीर्णा भाति मेदिनी ॥४९॥
49. śirobhiḥ patitairhastaiḥ sarvāṅgairyūthaśaḥ kṛtaiḥ ,
itaretarasaṁpṛktairākīrṇā bhāti medinī.
49. śirobhiḥ patitaiḥ hastaiḥ sarvāṅgaiḥ yūthaśaḥ

49. The earth appears strewn with fallen heads, hands, and all limbs, which are piled in heaps and mingled with one another.
विशिरस्कानथो कायान्दृष्ट्वा घोराभिनन्दिनः ।
मुह्यन्त्यनुचिता नार्यो विदेहानि शिरांसि च ॥५०॥
50. viśiraskānatho kāyāndṛṣṭvā ghorābhinandinaḥ ,
muhyantyanucitā nāryo videhāni śirāṁsi ca.

50. Upon seeing headless bodies and detached heads - objects that those delighting in horror would embrace - the unaccustomed women faint.
शिरः कायेन संधाय प्रेक्षमाणा विचेतसः ।
अपश्यन्त्यो परं तत्र नेदमस्येति दुःखिताः ॥५१॥
51. śiraḥ kāyena saṁdhāya prekṣamāṇā vicetasaḥ ,
apaśyantyo paraṁ tatra nedamasyeti duḥkhitāḥ.
51. śiraḥ kāyena saṃdhāya prekṣamāṇāḥ vicetasaḥ
apaśyantyaḥ param tatra na idam asya iti duḥkhitāḥ
51. vicetasaḥ prekṣamāṇāḥ śiraḥ kāyena saṃdhāya,

51. Distraught, looking on and trying to rejoin a head with its body, these women, unable to find the correct match there, are distressed, thinking, "This head (or body) does not belong to this one."
बाहूरुचरणानन्यान्विशिखोन्मथितान्पृथक् ।
संदधत्योऽसुखाविष्टा मूर्छन्त्येताः पुनः पुनः ॥५२॥
52. bāhūrucaraṇānanyānviśikhonmathitānpṛthak ,
saṁdadhatyo'sukhāviṣṭā mūrchantyetāḥ punaḥ punaḥ.
52. bāhūrucaraṇān anyān viśikhonmathitān pṛthak
saṃdadhatyaḥ asukhāviṣṭāḥ mūrcchanti etāḥ punaḥ punaḥ

52. These women, overcome with distress, repeatedly faint as they try to rejoin other arms, thighs, and feet that lie separately, shattered by arrows.
उत्कृत्तशिरसश्चान्यान्विजग्धान्मृगपक्षिभिः ।
दृष्ट्वा काश्चिन्न जानन्ति भर्तॄन्भरतयोषितः ॥५३॥
53. utkṛttaśirasaścānyānvijagdhānmṛgapakṣibhiḥ ,
dṛṣṭvā kāścinna jānanti bhartṝnbharatayoṣitaḥ.
53. utkṛttaśirasaḥ ca anyān vijagdhān mṛgapakṣibhiḥ
dṛṣṭvā kāścit na jānanti bhartṝn bharatayōṣitaḥ
53. bharatayōṣitaḥ ca kāścit,

53. And seeing others whose heads have been severed and bodies devoured by beasts and birds, some of these Bharata women cannot recognize their husbands.
पाणिभिश्चापरा घ्नन्ति शिरांसि मधुसूदन ।
प्रेक्ष्य भ्रातॄन्पितॄन्पुत्रान्पतींश्च निहतान्परैः ॥५४॥
54. pāṇibhiścāparā ghnanti śirāṁsi madhusūdana ,
prekṣya bhrātṝnpitṝnputrānpatīṁśca nihatānparaiḥ.
54. pāṇibhiḥ ca aparā ghnanti śirāṃsi madhusūdana
prekṣya bhrātṝn pitṝn putrān patīṃs ca nihatān paraiḥ

54. O Madhusūdana, others will strike heads with their hands after seeing their brothers, fathers, sons, and husbands slain by enemies.
बाहुभिश्च सखड्गैश्च शिरोभिश्च सकुण्डलैः ।
अगम्यकल्पा पृथिवी मांसशोणितकर्दमा ॥५५॥
55. bāhubhiśca sakhaḍgaiśca śirobhiśca sakuṇḍalaiḥ ,
agamyakalpā pṛthivī māṁsaśoṇitakardamā.

55. The earth becomes almost impassable, its mud formed of flesh and blood, strewn with arms, swords, and heads adorned with earrings.
न दुःखेषूचिताः पूर्वं दुःखं गाहन्त्यनिन्दिताः ।
भ्रातृभिः पितृभिः पुत्रैरुपकीर्णां वसुंधराम् ॥५६॥
56. na duḥkheṣūcitāḥ pūrvaṁ duḥkhaṁ gāhantyaninditāḥ ,
bhrātṛbhiḥ pitṛbhiḥ putrairupakīrṇāṁ vasuṁdharām.
56. na duḥkheṣu ucitāḥ pūrvam duḥkham gāhanti aninditāḥ
bhrātṛbhiḥ pitṛbhiḥ putraiḥ upakīrṇām vasundharām
56. pūrvam duḥkheṣu na ucitāḥ aninditāḥ vasundharām

56. The blameless women, who were not accustomed to suffering before, now plunge into great sorrow, beholding the earth strewn with (the bodies of) their brothers, fathers, and sons.
यूथानीव किशोरीणां सुकेशीनां जनार्दन ।
स्नुषाणां धृतराष्ट्रस्य पश्य वृन्दान्यनेकशः ॥५७॥
57. yūthānīva kiśorīṇāṁ sukeśīnāṁ janārdana ,
snuṣāṇāṁ dhṛtarāṣṭrasya paśya vṛndānyanekaśaḥ.

snuṣāṇām dhṛtarāṣṭrasya paśya vṛndāni anekaśaḥ

57. O Janārdana, behold the many groups of Dhṛtarāṣṭra's daughters-in-law, who are like herds of young girls with beautiful hair.
अतो दुःखतरं किं नु केशव प्रतिभाति मे ।
यदिमाः कुर्वते सर्वा रूपमुच्चावचं स्त्रियः ॥५८॥
58. ato duḥkhataraṁ kiṁ nu keśava pratibhāti me ,
yadimāḥ kurvate sarvā rūpamuccāvacaṁ striyaḥ.
58. ataḥ duḥkhataram kim nu keśava pratibhāti me
yat imāḥ kurvate sarvāḥ rūpam uccāvacam striyaḥ
58. keśava,
me ataḥ duḥkhataram kim nu pratibhāti,
yat imāḥ sarvāḥ striyaḥ uccāvacam rūpam kurvate.
58. O Keśava, what indeed could appear more sorrowful to me than the fact that all these women assume varied forms?
नूनमाचरितं पापं मया पूर्वेषु जन्मसु ।
या पश्यामि हतान्पुत्रान्पौत्रान्भ्रातॄंश्च केशव ।
एवमार्ता विलपती ददर्श निहतं सुतम् ॥५९॥
59. nūnamācaritaṁ pāpaṁ mayā pūrveṣu janmasu ,
yā paśyāmi hatānputrānpautrānbhrātṝṁśca keśava ,
evamārtā vilapatī dadarśa nihataṁ sutam.
59. nūnam ācaritam pāpam mayā pūrveṣu
janmasu yā paśyāmi hatān putrān
pautrān bhrātṝn ca keśava evam ārtā
vilapatī dadarśa nihatam sutam
59. keśava,
nūnam mayā pūrveṣu janmasu pāpam ācaritam,
yā (aham) hatān putrān pautrān ca bhrātṝn paśyāmi.
evam ārtā vilapatī (sā) nihatam sutam dadarśa.
59. Surely, a great sin (pāpam) was committed by me in previous lives (janmasu), O Keśava, for I see my sons, grandsons, and brothers slain. Thus distressed and lamenting, she saw her slain son.
