Nala said: 'Just as that kingdom belongs to your father, so it belongs to me; there is no doubt about it. However, I will certainly not go there while I am in a state of adversity.'

How can I, having been prosperous, go there as one who enhances your joy? Instead, I will go greatly distressed, becoming one who increases your sorrow.

Bṛhadaśva said: 'Speaking thus, King Nala repeatedly consoled the auspicious Damayantī, who was covered with half a garment.'

Covered by a single garment, and wandering here and there, they both, exhausted by hunger and thirst, approached a certain assembly hall.

Having reached that assembly hall, the king, the lord of Niṣadha, then sat down on the ground along with the princess of Vidarbha.

Indeed, he was naked, soiled, dishevelled, and covered in dust. Weary, he slept on the ground with Damayantī.

The auspicious, delicate, and suffering Damayantī also, having suddenly encountered sorrow, was then overcome by sleep.

8.
O lord of men, while Damayanti was asleep, King Nala, whose mind and spirit (ātman) were tormented by sorrow, did not sleep as he used to before.

9.
Having witnessed that loss of his kingdom, the complete abandonment by his friends, and that ruin in the forest, he (Nala) fell into deep anxiety.

What would become of me if I were to do this? And what if I were not to do it? Indeed, what is better for me: death, or the abandonment of (my) wife?

Indeed, this devoted wife of mine suffers this sorrow because of me. If she were separated from me, however, she might perhaps return to her own family.

This peerless woman will undoubtedly experience sorrow because of me. However, if she were to be abandoned, there might be a chance she would find happiness somewhere.

13.
Having thus resolved, and having repeatedly considered the matter in many ways, the king (Nala) believed that abandoning Damayantī was the best course of action for her welfare.

14.
Considering his own state of being without clothes and her state of having only a single garment, the king (Nala) decided upon cutting off half of her garment.

15.
"How can I cut this garment without my beloved (Damayantī) realizing it?" Pondering this, King Nala then moved around (her sleeping place).

16.
Then, O Bhārata, Nala, running here and there, found an excellent unsheathed sword in the area of the assembly hall.

17.
With that (sword), Nala, the tormentor of foes, cut half of his garment, wore it, and abandoning the sleeping Vaidarbhī (Damayantī), he ran away, as if deprived of his senses.

18.
Then, with a heavy heart, the lord of Niṣadha (Nala), having returned to that assembly hall and seeing Damayantī in such a state, wept.

22.
King Nala repeatedly goes and then returns to the assembly hall again and again. While being dragged by Kali (kali), he is simultaneously pulled away by his affection (sauhṛdena).

23.
Then, his distressed heart became as if split in two. Like a swing, it repeatedly went to and came from the assembly hall.

But Nala, afflicted and deluded by Kali, ran away after abandoning his sleeping wife and lamenting greatly and piteously.

25.
The king, with his mind distraught and afflicted by Kali, went into the deserted forest, considering various things, abandoning his wife and filled with sorrow.
