यवक्रीरुवाच ।
प्रतिभास्यन्ति वै वेदा मम तातस्य चोभयोः ।
अति चान्यान्भविष्यावो वरा लब्धास्तथा मया ॥१॥
1. yavakrīruvāca ,
pratibhāsyanti vai vedā mama tātasya cobhayoḥ ,
ati cānyānbhaviṣyāvo varā labdhāstathā mayā.
1. yavakrīḥ uvāca pratibhāsyanti vai vedāḥ mama tātasya ca
ubhayoḥ ati ca anyān bhaviṣyāvaḥ varāḥ labdhāḥ tathā mayā
1. Yavākrī said: "Indeed, the Vedas will become clear to both me and my father. We two will also surpass others, for such boons have been obtained by me."
भरद्वाज उवाच ।
दर्पस्ते भविता तात वराँल्लब्ध्वा यथेप्सितान् ।
स दर्पपूर्णः कृपणः क्षिप्रमेव विनश्यसि ॥२॥
2. bharadvāja uvāca ,
darpaste bhavitā tāta varāँllabdhvā yathepsitān ,
sa darpapūrṇaḥ kṛpaṇaḥ kṣiprameva vinaśyasi.
2. bharadvājaḥ uvāca darpaḥ te bhavitā tāta varān labdhvā
yathā īpsitān saḥ darpapūrṇaḥ kṛpaṇaḥ kṣipram eva vinaśyasi
2. Bharadvāja said: "Dear son, having obtained the boons you desired, arrogance will arise in you. Full of that arrogance, you will become wretched and perish very quickly."
अत्राप्युदाहरन्तीमा गाथा देवैरुदाहृताः ।
ऋषिरासीत्पुरा पुत्र बालधिर्नाम वीर्यवान् ॥३॥
3. atrāpyudāharantīmā gāthā devairudāhṛtāḥ ,
ṛṣirāsītpurā putra bāladhirnāma vīryavān.
3. atra api udāharanti imāḥ gāthāḥ devaiḥ udāhṛtāḥ
ṛṣiḥ āsīt purā putra bāladhiḥ nāma vīryavān
3. Here, they also recount these verses spoken by the gods: 'O son, formerly there was a mighty sage named Bāladhi.'
स पुत्रशोकादुद्विग्नस्तपस्तेपे सुदुश्चरम् ।
भवेन्मम सुतोऽमर्त्य इति तं लब्धवांश्च सः ॥४॥
4. sa putraśokādudvignastapastepe suduścaram ,
bhavenmama suto'martya iti taṁ labdhavāṁśca saḥ.
4. saḥ putraśokāt udvignaḥ tapaḥ tepe sudurcaram
bhavet mama sutaḥ amartyaḥ iti tam labdhavān ca saḥ
4. Distressed by the grief for his son, he performed extremely arduous asceticism (tapas). He obtained his wish, 'May my son be immortal,' and thus he got that (immortal) son.
तस्य प्रसादो देवैश्च कृतो न त्वमरैः समः ।
नामर्त्यो विद्यते मर्त्यो निमित्तायुर्भविष्यति ॥५॥
5. tasya prasādo devaiśca kṛto na tvamaraiḥ samaḥ ,
nāmartyo vidyate martyo nimittāyurbhaviṣyati.
5. tasya prasādaḥ devaiḥ ca kṛtaḥ na tu amaraiḥ samaḥ
na amartyaḥ vidyate martyaḥ nimittāyuḥ bhaviṣyati
5. The gods granted him a boon, but it was not equal to what immortals possess. No mortal can truly be immortal; his lifespan will be contingent upon specific conditions.
बालधिरुवाच ।
यथेमे पर्वताः शश्वत्तिष्ठन्ति सुरसत्तमाः ।
अक्षयास्तन्निमित्तं मे सुतस्यायुर्भवेदिति ॥६॥
6. bāladhiruvāca ,
yatheme parvatāḥ śaśvattiṣṭhanti surasattamāḥ ,
akṣayāstannimittaṁ me sutasyāyurbhavediti.
6. bāladhiḥ uvāca yathā ime parvatāḥ śaśvat tiṣṭhanti
surasattamāḥ akṣayāḥ tat nimittam me sutasya āyuḥ bhavet iti
6. Bāladhi said: 'O best among the gods, just as these mountains stand eternally and are imperishable, so too, based on that (analogy), may my son's lifespan become (imperishable).'
भरद्वाज उवाच ।
तस्य पुत्रस्तदा जज्ञे मेधावी क्रोधनः सदा ।
स तच्छ्रुत्वाकरोद्दर्पमृषींश्चैवावमन्यत ॥७॥
7. bharadvāja uvāca ,
tasya putrastadā jajñe medhāvī krodhanaḥ sadā ,
sa tacchrutvākaroddarpamṛṣīṁścaivāvamanyata.
7. bharadvājaḥ uvāca tasya putraḥ tadā jajñe medhāvī krodhanaḥ
sadā sa tat śrutvā akarot darpam ṛṣīn ca eva avamanyata
7. Bharadvāja said: 'Then his son was born, intelligent and always prone to anger. Hearing this (about his special status), he became arrogant and also disrespected the sages.'
विकुर्वाणो मुनीनां तु चरमाणो महीमिमाम् ।
आससाद महावीर्यं धनुषाक्षं मनीषिणम् ॥८॥
8. vikurvāṇo munīnāṁ tu caramāṇo mahīmimām ,
āsasāda mahāvīryaṁ dhanuṣākṣaṁ manīṣiṇam.
8. vikurvāṇaḥ munīnām tu caramāṇaḥ mahīm imām
āsasāda mahāvīryam dhanuṣākṣam manīṣiṇam
8. But while misbehaving towards the sages and roaming this earth, he encountered the greatly powerful and wise Dhanuṣākṣa.
तस्यापचक्रे मेधावी तं शशाप स वीर्यवान् ।
भव भस्मेति चोक्तः स न भस्म समपद्यत ॥९॥
9. tasyāpacakre medhāvī taṁ śaśāpa sa vīryavān ,
bhava bhasmeti coktaḥ sa na bhasma samapadyata.
9. tasya apacakre medhāvī tam śaśāpa saḥ vīryavān
bhava bhasma iti ca uktaḥ saḥ na bhasma samapadyata
9. Medhāvī offended him, and that powerful one cursed him, saying, "Become ashes!" However, he did not turn into ashes.
धनुषाक्षस्तु तं दृष्ट्वा मेधाविनमनामयम् ।
निमित्तमस्य महिषैर्भेदयामास वीर्यवान् ॥१०॥
10. dhanuṣākṣastu taṁ dṛṣṭvā medhāvinamanāmayam ,
nimittamasya mahiṣairbhedayāmāsa vīryavān.
10. dhanuṣākṣaḥ tu tam dṛṣṭvā medhāvinam anāmayam
nimittam asya mahiṣaiḥ bhedayāmāsa vīryavān
10. But the powerful Dhanuṣākṣa, seeing Medhāvī unharmed, caused his protective sign to be destroyed by buffaloes.
स निमित्ते विनष्टे तु ममार सहसा शिशुः ।
तं मृतं पुत्रमादाय विललाप ततः पिता ॥११॥
11. sa nimitte vinaṣṭe tu mamāra sahasā śiśuḥ ,
taṁ mṛtaṁ putramādāya vilalāpa tataḥ pitā.
11. saḥ nimitte vinaṣṭe tu mamāra sahasā śiśuḥ
tam mṛtam putram ādāya vilalāpa tataḥ pitā
11. But when that protective sign was destroyed, the child suddenly died. Then, taking that dead son, the father lamented.
लालप्यमानं तं दृष्ट्वा मुनयः पुनरार्तवत् ।
ऊचुर्वेदोक्तया पूर्वं गाथया तन्निबोध मे ॥१२॥
12. lālapyamānaṁ taṁ dṛṣṭvā munayaḥ punarārtavat ,
ūcurvedoktayā pūrvaṁ gāthayā tannibodha me.
12. lālapyamānam tam dṛṣṭvā munayaḥ punaḥ ārtavat
ūcuḥ vedoktayā pūrvam gāthayā tat nibodha me
12. Seeing him intensely lamenting, the sages again spoke to him compassionately with a verse formerly stated in the Veda. (They said,) "Understand that from me."
न दिष्टमर्थमत्येतुमीशो मर्त्यः कथंचन ।
महिषैर्भेदयामास धनुषाक्षो महीधरान् ॥१३॥
13. na diṣṭamarthamatyetumīśo martyaḥ kathaṁcana ,
mahiṣairbhedayāmāsa dhanuṣākṣo mahīdharān.
13. na diṣṭam artham atyetum īśaḥ martyaḥ kathaṃcana
| mahiṣaiḥ bhedayāmāsa dhanuṣā akṣaḥ mahīdharān
13. No mortal is ever able to transcend destiny (diṣṭam). Akṣa once shattered mountains using buffaloes and a bow.
एवं लब्ध्वा वरान्बाला दर्पपूर्णास्तरस्विनः ।
क्षिप्रमेव विनश्यन्ति यथा न स्यात्तथा भवान् ॥१४॥
14. evaṁ labdhvā varānbālā darpapūrṇāstarasvinaḥ ,
kṣiprameva vinaśyanti yathā na syāttathā bhavān.
14. evam labdhvā varān bālāḥ darpapūrṇāḥ tarasvinaḥ |
kṣipram eva vinaśyanti yathā na syāt tathā bhavān
14. Thus, young men (bālāḥ) who, having obtained boons, become full of arrogance (darpa) and impetuous, quickly perish. May you not be like that.
एष रैभ्यो महावीर्यः पुत्रौ चास्य तथाविधौ ।
तं यथा पुत्र नाभ्येषि तथा कुर्यास्त्वतन्द्रितः ॥१५॥
15. eṣa raibhyo mahāvīryaḥ putrau cāsya tathāvidhau ,
taṁ yathā putra nābhyeṣi tathā kuryāstvatandritaḥ.
15. eṣaḥ raibhyaḥ mahāvīryaḥ putrau ca asya tathāvidhau |
tam yathā putra na abhyeṣi tathā kuryāḥ tvam atandritaḥ
15. This Raibhya is very mighty, and his two sons are likewise. Therefore, my son (putra), you should diligently act so that you do not confront him.
स हि क्रुद्धः समर्थस्त्वां पुत्र पीडयितुं रुषा ।
वैद्यश्चापि तपस्वी च कोपनश्च महानृषिः ॥१६॥
16. sa hi kruddhaḥ samarthastvāṁ putra pīḍayituṁ ruṣā ,
vaidyaścāpi tapasvī ca kopanaśca mahānṛṣiḥ.
16. saḥ hi kruddhaḥ samarthaḥ tvām putra pīḍayitum ruṣā
| vaidyaḥ ca api tapasvī ca kopanaḥ ca mahān ṛṣiḥ
16. For indeed, when enraged, he is capable of tormenting you, my son (putra), with his wrath (ruṣā). Moreover, he is a learned man (vaidya), an ascetic (tapasvin), easily angered, and a great sage (ṛṣi).
यवक्रीरुवाच ।
एवं करिष्ये मा तापं तात कार्षीः कथंचन ।
यथा हि मे भवान्मान्यस्तथा रैभ्यः पिता मम ॥१७॥
17. yavakrīruvāca ,
evaṁ kariṣye mā tāpaṁ tāta kārṣīḥ kathaṁcana ,
yathā hi me bhavānmānyastathā raibhyaḥ pitā mama.
17. yavakrīḥ uvāca evam kariṣye mā tāpam tāta kārṣīḥ kathaṃcana
yathā hi me bhavān mānyaḥ tathā raibhyaḥ pitā mama
17. Yavakri said: "I will do so. O dear father, do not feel any distress (tāpa) at all. For just as you are venerable to me, so also is Raibhya, [whom I regard as] my father."
लोमश उवाच ।
उक्त्वा स पितरं श्लक्ष्णं यवक्रीरकुतोभयः ।
विप्रकुर्वन्नृषीनन्यानतुष्यत्परया मुदा ॥१८॥
18. lomaśa uvāca ,
uktvā sa pitaraṁ ślakṣṇaṁ yavakrīrakutobhayaḥ ,
viprakurvannṛṣīnanyānatuṣyatparayā mudā.
18. lomaśaḥ uvāca uktvā sa pitaram ślakṣṇam yavakrīḥ
akutobhayaḥ viprakurvan ṛṣīn anyān atuṣyat parayā mudā
18. Lomasa said: Having spoken gently to his father, Yavakri, feeling no fear, proceeded to treat other sages disrespectfully, and was exceedingly pleased with great joy.
