वैशंपायन उवाच ।
तथा दूतैः समाज्ञाय आयान्तं मधुसूदनम् ।
धृतराष्ट्रोऽब्रवीद्भीष्ममर्चयित्वा महाभुजम् ॥१॥
1. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
tathā dūtaiḥ samājñāya āyāntaṁ madhusūdanam ,
dhṛtarāṣṭro'bravīdbhīṣmamarcayitvā mahābhujam.

1. Vaiśampāyana said: Having thus learned from the messengers that Madhusūdana (Krishna) was approaching, Dhṛtarāṣṭra, after honoring the mighty-armed Bhīṣma, spoke.
द्रोणं च संजयं चैव विदुरं च महामतिम् ।
दुर्योधनं च सामात्यं हृष्टरोमाब्रवीदिदम् ॥२॥
2. droṇaṁ ca saṁjayaṁ caiva viduraṁ ca mahāmatim ,
duryodhanaṁ ca sāmātyaṁ hṛṣṭaromābravīdidam.
2. droṇam ca saṃjayam ca eva viduram ca mahāmatim
duryodhanam ca sa amātyam hṛṣṭaromā abravīt idam
2. With his hair standing on end (thrilled), he then spoke this to Droṇa, Sañjaya, the greatly wise Vidura, and Duryodhana along with his ministers.
अद्भुतं महदाश्चर्यं श्रूयते कुरुनन्दन ।
स्त्रियो बालाश्च वृद्धाश्च कथयन्ति गृहे गृहे ॥३॥
3. adbhutaṁ mahadāścaryaṁ śrūyate kurunandana ,
striyo bālāśca vṛddhāśca kathayanti gṛhe gṛhe.
3. adbhutam mahat āścaryam śrūyate kurunandana
striyaḥ bālāḥ ca vṛddhāḥ ca kathayanti gṛhe gṛhe
3. O delight of the Kurus, a great and astonishing wonder is being heard. Women, children, and elderly people are speaking about it in every house.
सत्कृत्याचक्षते चान्ये तथैवान्ये समागताः ।
पृथग्वादाश्च वर्तन्ते चत्वरेषु सभासु च ॥४॥
4. satkṛtyācakṣate cānye tathaivānye samāgatāḥ ,
pṛthagvādāśca vartante catvareṣu sabhāsu ca.
4. satkṛtya ācakṣate ca anye tathā eva anye samāgatāḥ
pṛthakvādāḥ ca vartante catvareṣu sabhāsu ca
4. And others, showing respect, relate these events, while still others, who have gathered, do so likewise. Moreover, separate discussions are taking place in the courtyards and in the assemblies.
उपयास्यति दाशार्हः पाण्डवार्थे पराक्रमी ।
स नो मान्यश्च पूज्यश्च सर्वथा मधुसूदनः ॥५॥
5. upayāsyati dāśārhaḥ pāṇḍavārthe parākramī ,
sa no mānyaśca pūjyaśca sarvathā madhusūdanaḥ.
5. upayāsyati dāśārhaḥ pāṇḍavārthe parākramī saḥ
naḥ mānyaḥ ca pūjyaḥ ca sarvathā madhusūdanaḥ
5. The valiant Daśārha (Krishna) will come for the sake of the Pāṇḍavas. He, Madhusūdana, is certainly venerable and worthy of worship for us in every respect.
तस्मिन्हि यात्रा लोकस्य भूतानामीश्वरो हि सः ।
तस्मिन्धृतिश्च वीर्यं च प्रज्ञा चौजश्च माधवे ॥६॥
6. tasminhi yātrā lokasya bhūtānāmīśvaro hi saḥ ,
tasmindhṛtiśca vīryaṁ ca prajñā caujaśca mādhave.
6. tasmin hi yātrā lokasya bhūtānām īśvaraḥ hi saḥ
tasmin dhṛtiḥ ca vīryam ca prajñā ca ojaḥ ca mādhave
6. Indeed, in him is the sustenance of the people and of all beings, for he is the Lord (īśvara). In Madhava are courage, strength, wisdom, and vitality.
स मान्यतां नरश्रेष्ठः स हि धर्मः सनातनः ।
पूजितो हि सुखाय स्यादसुखः स्यादपूजितः ॥७॥
7. sa mānyatāṁ naraśreṣṭhaḥ sa hi dharmaḥ sanātanaḥ ,
pūjito hi sukhāya syādasukhaḥ syādapūjitaḥ.
7. saḥ mānyatām naraśreṣṭhaḥ saḥ hi dharmaḥ sanātanaḥ
pūjitaḥ hi sukhāya syāt asukhaḥ syāt apūjitaḥ
7. He, the best of men, should be honored, for he is indeed the eternal (sanātana) natural law (dharma). If he is honored, it will certainly lead to happiness; if he is not honored, it will lead to unhappiness.
स चेत्तुष्यति दाशार्ह उपचारैररिंदमः ।
कृत्स्नान्सर्वानभिप्रायान्प्राप्स्यामः सर्वराजसु ॥८॥
8. sa cettuṣyati dāśārha upacārairariṁdamaḥ ,
kṛtsnānsarvānabhiprāyānprāpsyāmaḥ sarvarājasu.
8. saḥ cet tuṣyati dāśārhaḥ upacāraiḥ arimdamah
kṛtsnān sarvān abhiprāyān prāpsyāmaḥ sarvarājasu
8. O crusher of enemies (arimdamah), if that Daśārha is pleased by our offerings, we shall achieve all our complete objectives among all the kings.
तस्य पूजार्थमद्यैव संविधत्स्व परंतप ।
सभाः पथि विधीयन्तां सर्वकामसमाहिताः ॥९॥
9. tasya pūjārthamadyaiva saṁvidhatsva paraṁtapa ,
sabhāḥ pathi vidhīyantāṁ sarvakāmasamāhitāḥ.
9. tasya pūjārtham adya eva saṃvidhatsva paraṃtapa
sabhāḥ pathi vidhīyantām sarvakāmasamāhitāḥ
9. O tormentor of foes (paraṃtapa), for his worship, arrange everything right today! Let pavilions be constructed along the path, equipped with all desirable things.
यथा प्रीतिर्महाबाहो त्वयि जायेत तस्य वै ।
तथा कुरुष्व गान्धारे कथं वा भीष्म मन्यसे ॥१०॥
10. yathā prītirmahābāho tvayi jāyeta tasya vai ,
tathā kuruṣva gāndhāre kathaṁ vā bhīṣma manyase.
10. yathā prītiḥ mahābāho tvayi jāyeta tasya vai
tathā kuruṣva gāndhāre katham vā bhīṣma manyase
10. O mighty-armed (mahābāho), act so that his affection for you may certainly arise. O Gāndhāre, do that! Or, Bhīṣma, what is your opinion?
ततो भीष्मादयः सर्वे धृतराष्ट्रं जनाधिपम् ।
ऊचुः परममित्येवं पूजयन्तोऽस्य तद्वचः ॥११॥
11. tato bhīṣmādayaḥ sarve dhṛtarāṣṭraṁ janādhipam ,
ūcuḥ paramamityevaṁ pūjayanto'sya tadvacaḥ.
11. tataḥ bhīṣmādayaḥ sarve dhṛtarāṣṭram janādhipam
ūcuḥ paramam iti evam pūjayantaḥ asya tat vacaḥ
11. Then, all of them, led by Bhishma, spoke to Dhritarashtra, the lord of the people, honoring his excellent words in this manner.
तेषामनुमतं ज्ञात्वा राजा दुर्योधनस्तदा ।
सभावास्तूनि रम्याणि प्रदेष्टुमुपचक्रमे ॥१२॥
12. teṣāmanumataṁ jñātvā rājā duryodhanastadā ,
sabhāvāstūni ramyāṇi pradeṣṭumupacakrame.
12. teṣām anumatam jñātvā rājā duryodhanaḥ tadā
sabhāvāstūni ramyāṇi pradeṣṭum upacakrame
12. Understanding their consent, King Duryodhana then began to designate charming sites for assembly halls.
ततो देशेषु देशेषु रमणीयेषु भागशः ।
सर्वरत्नसमाकीर्णाः सभाश्चक्रुरनेकशः ॥१३॥
13. tato deśeṣu deśeṣu ramaṇīyeṣu bhāgaśaḥ ,
sarvaratnasamākīrṇāḥ sabhāścakruranekaśaḥ.
13. tataḥ deśeṣu deśeṣu ramaṇīyeṣu bhāgaśaḥ
sarvaratnasamākīrṇāḥ sabhāḥ cakruḥ anekaśaḥ
13. Then, in various charming places, they constructed numerous assembly halls, each abundantly adorned with all kinds of jewels.
आसनानि विचित्राणि युक्तानि विविधैर्गुणैः ।
स्त्रियो गन्धानलंकारान्सूक्ष्माणि वसनानि च ॥१४॥
14. āsanāni vicitrāṇi yuktāni vividhairguṇaiḥ ,
striyo gandhānalaṁkārānsūkṣmāṇi vasanāni ca.
14. āsanāni vicitrāṇi yuktāni vividhaiḥ guṇaiḥ
striyaḥ gandhān alaṅkārān sūkṣmāṇi vasanāni ca
14. And there were diverse seats, endowed with various qualities, as well as women, perfumes, ornaments, and fine garments.
गुणवन्त्यन्नपानानि भोज्यानि विविधानि च ।
माल्यानि च सुगन्धीनि तानि राजा ददौ ततः ॥१५॥
15. guṇavantyannapānāni bhojyāni vividhāni ca ,
mālyāni ca sugandhīni tāni rājā dadau tataḥ.
15. guṇavanti annapānāni bhojyāni vividhāni ca
mālyāni ca sugandhīni tāni rājā dadau tataḥ
15. Then, the king provided various excellent foods, drinks, and edibles, as well as fragrant garlands.
विशेषतश्च वासार्थं सभां ग्रामे वृकस्थले ।
विदधे कौरवो राजा बहुरत्नां मनोरमाम् ॥१६॥
16. viśeṣataśca vāsārthaṁ sabhāṁ grāme vṛkasthale ,
vidadhe kauravo rājā bahuratnāṁ manoramām.
16. viśeṣataḥ ca vāsārtham sabhām grāme vṛkasthale
vidadhe kauravaḥ rājā bahuratnām manoramām
16. And especially, the Kuru king (rājā) constructed a delightful, richly jeweled palace in the village named Vṛkasthala for the purpose of residence.
एतद्विधाय वै सर्वं देवार्हमतिमानुषम् ।
आचख्यौ धृतराष्ट्राय राजा दुर्योधनस्तदा ॥१७॥
17. etadvidhāya vai sarvaṁ devārhamatimānuṣam ,
ācakhyau dhṛtarāṣṭrāya rājā duryodhanastadā.
17. etat vidhāya vai sarvam devārham atimānuṣam
ācakhyau dhṛtarāṣṭrāya rājā duryodhanaḥ tadā
17. Having indeed constructed all this, which was worthy of the gods and superhuman, King Duryodhana then reported it to Dhritarashtra.
ताः सभाः केशवः सर्वा रत्नानि विविधानि च ।
असमीक्ष्यैव दाशार्ह उपायात्कुरुसद्म तत् ॥१८॥
18. tāḥ sabhāḥ keśavaḥ sarvā ratnāni vividhāni ca ,
asamīkṣyaiva dāśārha upāyātkurusadma tat.
18. tāḥ sabhāḥ keśavaḥ sarvā ratnāni vividhāni ca
asamīkṣya eva dāśārhaḥ upāyāt kurusadma tat
18. Kesava (Keśava), the Dasharha (Dāśārha), without even examining all those halls and various jewels, went to that Kuru palace.
