He (Bhīṣma) was like a fire, whose blazing arrows and bows were its flames, whose unleashed missiles were its winds, whose roar was the sound of chariot wheels, and whose fire (pāvaka) was the emergence of great weapons (mahāstra).

Again, Dhanañjaya (Arjuna), greatly enraged and hastening, struck Bhīṣma with a hundred arrows in all his limbs and all his vital spots.

Then, Bhishma (Gāṅgeya) took up another, more powerful bow. But Arjuna, with three sharp arrows, immediately shattered that one into three pieces. Thus, in the great battle, every bow that Bhishma took up was instantly broken.

This (Arjuna) cannot be defeated in battle, not even by Indra (Vajrabhṛt). Nor can the united heroes, including gods, dānavas, and rākṣasas, defeat me. How much less then can exceedingly weak mortals do so?

But the Pāṇḍavas, having attained victory and the supreme state in the other world, all the valiant heroes, whose arms were like maces, blew their great conch shells. The Somakas, along with the Pañcālas, also greatly rejoiced, O lord of men.
