गन्धर्व उवाच ।
कल्माषपाद इत्यस्मिँल्लोके राजा बभूव ह ।
इक्ष्वाकुवंशजः पार्थ तेजसासदृशो भुवि ॥१॥
1. gandharva uvāca ,
kalmāṣapāda ityasmiँlloke rājā babhūva ha ,
ikṣvākuvaṁśajaḥ pārtha tejasāsadṛśo bhuvi.
1. gandharvaḥ uvāca | kalmāṣapādaḥ iti asmin loke rājā
babhūva ha | ikṣvākuvaṃśajaḥ pārtha tejasā asadṛśaḥ bhuvi
1. The Gandharva said: 'In this world, O Pārtha, there was indeed a king named Kalmāṣapāda, born in the Ikṣvāku dynasty, who was incomparable in his radiance on earth.'
स कदाचिद्वनं राजा मृगयां निर्ययौ पुरात् ।
मृगान्विध्यन्वराहांश्च चचार रिपुमर्दनः ॥२॥
2. sa kadācidvanaṁ rājā mṛgayāṁ niryayau purāt ,
mṛgānvidhyanvarāhāṁśca cacāra ripumardanaḥ.
2. saḥ kadācit vanam rājā mṛgayām niryayau purāt
| mṛgān vidhyan varāhān ca cacāra ripumardanaḥ
2. Once, the king, that suppressor of enemies, went out from the city into the forest for a hunt. He wandered, piercing (hunting) deer and boars.
स तु राजा महात्मानं वासिष्ठमृषिसत्तमम् ।
तृषार्तश्च क्षुधार्तश्च एकायनगतः पथि ॥३॥
3. sa tu rājā mahātmānaṁ vāsiṣṭhamṛṣisattamam ,
tṛṣārtaśca kṣudhārtaśca ekāyanagataḥ pathi.
3. saḥ tu rājā mahātmānam vāsiṣṭham ṛṣisattamam
tṛṣārtaḥ ca kṣudhārtaḥ ca ekāyanagataḥ pathi
3. That king, however, distressed by thirst and hunger, and proceeding on a single path,
अपश्यदजितः संख्ये मुनिं प्रतिमुखागतम् ।
शक्तिं नाम महाभागं वसिष्ठकुलनन्दनम् ।
ज्येष्ठं पुत्रशतात्पुत्रं वसिष्ठस्य महात्मनः ॥४॥
4. apaśyadajitaḥ saṁkhye muniṁ pratimukhāgatam ,
śaktiṁ nāma mahābhāgaṁ vasiṣṭhakulanandanam ,
jyeṣṭhaṁ putraśatātputraṁ vasiṣṭhasya mahātmanaḥ.
4. apaśyat ajitaḥ saṅkhye munim
pratimukhāgatam śaktim nāma mahābhāgam
vasiṣṭhakulanandanam jyeṣṭham
putraśatāt putram vasiṣṭhasya mahātmanaḥ
4. saw, unconquered in battle, a sage coming towards him on the path. This highly fortunate sage was named Shakti (śakti), the delight of Vasishtha's family, and the eldest son among the hundred sons of the noble-minded Vasishtha.
अपगच्छ पथोऽस्माकमित्येवं पार्थिवोऽब्रवीत् ।
तथा ऋषिरुवाचैनं सान्त्वयञ्श्लक्ष्णया गिरा ॥५॥
5. apagaccha patho'smākamityevaṁ pārthivo'bravīt ,
tathā ṛṣiruvācainaṁ sāntvayañślakṣṇayā girā.
5. apagaccha pathaḥ asmākam iti evam pārthivaḥ abravīt
tathā ṛṣiḥ uvāca enam sāntvayan ślakṣṇayā girā
5. "Go away from our path!" the king thus spoke. Then, consoling him with gentle words, the sage also spoke to him.
ऋषिस्तु नापचक्राम तस्मिन्धर्मपथे स्थितः ।
नापि राजा मुनेर्मानात्क्रोधाच्चापि जगाम ह ॥६॥
6. ṛṣistu nāpacakrāma tasmindharmapathe sthitaḥ ,
nāpi rājā munermānātkrodhāccāpi jagāma ha.
6. ṛṣiḥ tu na apacakrāma tasmin dharmapathe sthitaḥ
na api rājā muneḥ mānāt krodhāt ca api jagāma ha
6. However, the sage, standing firm on that path of righteousness (dharma), did not move away. Nor did the king depart, due to his pride (māna) and anger (krodha).
अमुञ्चन्तं तु पन्थानं तमृषिं नृपसत्तमः ।
जघान कशया मोहात्तदा राक्षसवन्मुनिम् ॥७॥
7. amuñcantaṁ tu panthānaṁ tamṛṣiṁ nṛpasattamaḥ ,
jaghāna kaśayā mohāttadā rākṣasavanmunim.
7. amuñcantam tu panthānam tam ṛṣim nṛpasattamaḥ
jaghāna kaśayā mohāt tadā rākṣasavat munim
7. Then, the best of kings, out of delusion, struck that sage who would not leave the path, hitting him like a demon with a whip.
कशाप्रहाराभिहतस्ततः स मुनिसत्तमः ।
तं शशाप नृपश्रेष्ठं वासिष्ठः क्रोधमूर्च्छितः ॥८॥
8. kaśāprahārābhihatastataḥ sa munisattamaḥ ,
taṁ śaśāpa nṛpaśreṣṭhaṁ vāsiṣṭhaḥ krodhamūrcchitaḥ.
8. kaśāprahārābhihataḥ tataḥ sa munisattamaḥ tam
śaśāpa nṛpaśreṣṭham vāsiṣṭhaḥ krodhamūrcchitaḥ
8. Then, that preeminent sage (Vasiṣṭha), struck by whip blows and overwhelmed with anger, cursed that finest of kings.
हंसि राक्षसवद्यस्माद्राजापसद तापसम् ।
तस्मात्त्वमद्य प्रभृति पुरुषादो भविष्यसि ॥९॥
9. haṁsi rākṣasavadyasmādrājāpasada tāpasam ,
tasmāttvamadya prabhṛti puruṣādo bhaviṣyasi.
9. haṃsi rākṣasavat yasmāt rājāpasada tāpasam
tasmāt tvam adya prabhṛti puruṣādas bhaviṣyasi
9. Because you, O wicked king, kill a hermit like a demon, therefore, from today onwards, you shall become a man-eater.
मनुष्यपिशिते सक्तश्चरिष्यसि महीमिमाम् ।
गच्छ राजाधमेत्युक्तः शक्तिना वीर्यशक्तिना ॥१०॥
10. manuṣyapiśite saktaścariṣyasi mahīmimām ,
gaccha rājādhametyuktaḥ śaktinā vīryaśaktinā.
10. manuṣyapiśite saktaḥ cariṣyasi mahīm imām
gaccha rājādhama iti uktaḥ śaktinā vīryaśaktinā
10. You will wander this earth, attached to human flesh. 'Go, vilest of kings!' — thus he was addressed by Śakti, who possessed great power.
ततो याज्यनिमित्तं तु विश्वामित्रवसिष्ठयोः ।
वैरमासीत्तदा तं तु विश्वामित्रोऽन्वपद्यत ॥११॥
11. tato yājyanimittaṁ tu viśvāmitravasiṣṭhayoḥ ,
vairamāsīttadā taṁ tu viśvāmitro'nvapadyata.
11. tataḥ yājyanimittam tu viśvāmitravasiṣṭhayoḥ
vairam āsīt tadā tam tu viśvāmitraḥ anvapadyata
11. Then, indeed, on account of the issue of priesthood, enmity arose between Viśvāmitra and Vasiṣṭha. At that time, Viśvāmitra assailed him.
तयोर्विवदतोरेवं समीपमुपचक्रमे ।
ऋषिरुग्रतपाः पार्थ विश्वामित्रः प्रतापवान् ॥१२॥
12. tayorvivadatorevaṁ samīpamupacakrame ,
ṛṣirugratapāḥ pārtha viśvāmitraḥ pratāpavān.
12. tayoḥ vivadator evam samīpam upacakrame ṛṣiḥ
ugratapāḥ pārtha viśvāmitraḥ pratāpavān
12. As those two were thus disputing, the glorious sage Viśvāmitra, possessing fierce austerities (tapas), O Pārtha, approached them.
ततः स बुबुधे पश्चात्तमृषिं नृपसत्तमः ।
ऋषेः पुत्रं वसिष्ठस्य वसिष्ठमिव तेजसा ॥१३॥
13. tataḥ sa bubudhe paścāttamṛṣiṁ nṛpasattamaḥ ,
ṛṣeḥ putraṁ vasiṣṭhasya vasiṣṭhamiva tejasā.
13. tataḥ saḥ bubudhe paścāt tam ṛṣim nṛpasattamaḥ
ṛṣeḥ putram vasiṣṭhasya vasiṣṭham iva tejasā
13. Then, later, that excellent king understood that sage to be the son of the sage Vasiṣṭha, who was like Vasiṣṭha himself in splendor.
अन्तर्धाय तदात्मानं विश्वामित्रोऽपि भारत ।
तावुभावुपचक्राम चिकीर्षन्नात्मनः प्रियम् ॥१४॥
14. antardhāya tadātmānaṁ viśvāmitro'pi bhārata ,
tāvubhāvupacakrāma cikīrṣannātmanaḥ priyam.
14. antardhāya tadā ātmānam viśvāmitraḥ api bhārata
tau ubhau upacakrāma cikīrṣan ātmanaḥ priyam
14. O Bhārata, then Viśvāmitra, having hidden himself (ātman), approached those two, desiring to achieve his own desired outcome.
स तु शप्तस्तदा तेन शक्तिना वै नृपोत्तमः ।
जगाम शरणं शक्तिं प्रसादयितुमर्हयन् ॥१५॥
15. sa tu śaptastadā tena śaktinā vai nṛpottamaḥ ,
jagāma śaraṇaṁ śaktiṁ prasādayitumarhayan.
15. saḥ tu śaptaḥ tadā tena śaktinā vai nṛpottamaḥ
jagāma śaraṇam śaktim prasādayitum arhayan
15. But that excellent king, having been cursed by Śakti at that time, indeed went to Śakti for refuge, seeking to appease him with honor.
तस्य भावं विदित्वा स नृपतेः कुरुनन्दन ।
विश्वामित्रस्ततो रक्ष आदिदेश नृपं प्रति ॥१६॥
16. tasya bhāvaṁ viditvā sa nṛpateḥ kurunandana ,
viśvāmitrastato rakṣa ādideśa nṛpaṁ prati.
16. tasya bhāvam viditvā saḥ nṛpateḥ kurunandana
viśvāmitraḥ tataḥ rakṣaḥ ādideśa nṛpam prati
16. O son of Kuru, Viśvāmitra, understanding the king's intention, then ordered a rākṣasa concerning the king.
स शापात्तस्य विप्रर्षेर्विश्वामित्रस्य चाज्ञया ।
राक्षसः किंकरो नाम विवेश नृपतिं तदा ॥१७॥
17. sa śāpāttasya viprarṣerviśvāmitrasya cājñayā ,
rākṣasaḥ kiṁkaro nāma viveśa nṛpatiṁ tadā.
17. saḥ śāpāt tasya viprarṣeḥ viśvāmitrasya ca ājñayā
rākṣasaḥ kiṃkaraḥ nāma viveśa nṛpatim tadā
17. Then, due to the curse of that Brahmin-sage and by the command of Viśvāmitra, the rākṣasa named Kiṃkara entered the king.
रक्षसा तु गृहीतं तं विदित्वा स मुनिस्तदा ।
विश्वामित्रोऽप्यपक्रामत्तस्माद्देशादरिंदम ॥१८॥
18. rakṣasā tu gṛhītaṁ taṁ viditvā sa munistadā ,
viśvāmitro'pyapakrāmattasmāddeśādariṁdama.
18. rakṣasā tu gṛhītam tam viditvā saḥ muniḥ tadā
viśvāmitraḥ api apakrāmat tasmāt deśāt arimdamā
18. But when that (king) was seized by the demon (rākṣasa), that sage Viśvāmitra, realizing this, immediately departed from that place, O subduer of enemies.
ततः स नृपतिर्विद्वान्रक्षन्नात्मानमात्मना ।
बलवत्पीड्यमानोऽपि रक्षसान्तर्गतेन ह ॥१९॥
19. tataḥ sa nṛpatirvidvānrakṣannātmānamātmanā ,
balavatpīḍyamāno'pi rakṣasāntargatena ha.
19. tataḥ saḥ nṛpatiḥ vidvān rakṣan ātmānam ātmanā
balavat pīḍyamānaḥ api rakṣasā antargateṇa ha
19. Then that wise king, even though being severely tormented by the demon (rākṣasa) that had entered inside, was protecting himself by his own efforts (ātman).
ददर्श तं द्विजः कश्चिद्राजानं प्रस्थितं पुनः ।
ययाचे क्षुधितश्चैनं समांसं भोजनं तदा ॥२०॥
20. dadarśa taṁ dvijaḥ kaścidrājānaṁ prasthitaṁ punaḥ ,
yayāce kṣudhitaścainaṁ samāṁsaṁ bhojanaṁ tadā.
20. dadarśa tam dvijaḥ kaścit rājānam prasthitam punaḥ
yayāce kṣudhitaḥ ca enam samāṃsam bhojanam tadā
20. A certain Brahmin (dvija) saw that king, who had again set out. Being hungry, he then begged him for a meal that included meat.
तमुवाचाथ राजर्षिर्द्विजं मित्रसहस्तदा ।
आस्स्व ब्रह्मंस्त्वमत्रैव मुहूर्तमिति सान्त्वयन् ॥२१॥
21. tamuvācātha rājarṣirdvijaṁ mitrasahastadā ,
āssva brahmaṁstvamatraiva muhūrtamiti sāntvayan.
21. tam uvāca atha rājarṣiḥ dvijam mitrasahaḥ tadā
āssva brahman tvam atra eva muhūrtam iti sāntvayan
21. Then King Mitrasaha, that royal sage (rājarṣi), spoke to that Brahmin (dvija), consoling him: 'O Brahmin, you stay right here for a moment.'
निवृत्तः प्रतिदास्यामि भोजनं ते यथेप्सितम् ।
इत्युक्त्वा प्रययौ राजा तस्थौ च द्विजसत्तमः ॥२२॥
22. nivṛttaḥ pratidāsyāmi bhojanaṁ te yathepsitam ,
ityuktvā prayayau rājā tasthau ca dvijasattamaḥ.
22. nivṛttaḥ pratidāsyāmi bhojanam te yathā īpsitam
iti uktvā prayayau rājā tasthau ca dvijasattamaḥ
22. 'Having returned, I will give you the meal you desire.' Having said this, the king departed, and the excellent Brahmin (dvijasattama) remained there.
अन्तर्गतं तु तद्राज्ञस्तदा ब्राह्मणभाषितम् ।
सोऽन्तःपुरं प्रविश्याथ संविवेश नराधिपः ॥२३॥
23. antargataṁ tu tadrājñastadā brāhmaṇabhāṣitam ,
so'ntaḥpuraṁ praviśyātha saṁviveśa narādhipaḥ.
23. antargatam tu tat rājñaḥ tadā brāhmaṇa-bhāṣitam
saḥ antaḥ-puram praviśya atha saṃviveśa narādhipaḥ
23. That Brahmin's statement remained deeply ingrained in the king's mind. Then, having entered his inner chambers, the king lay down.
ततोऽर्धरात्र उत्थाय सूदमानाय्य सत्वरम् ।
उवाच राजा संस्मृत्य ब्राह्मणस्य प्रतिश्रुतम् ॥२४॥
24. tato'rdharātra utthāya sūdamānāyya satvaram ,
uvāca rājā saṁsmṛtya brāhmaṇasya pratiśrutam.
24. tataḥ ardharātre utthāya sūdam ānāyya satvaram
uvāca rājā saṃsmṛtya brāhmaṇasya pratiśrutam
24. Then, having risen at midnight and quickly summoned the cook, the king spoke, remembering the Brahmin's promise.
गच्छामुष्मिन्नसौ देशे ब्राह्मणो मां प्रतीक्षते ।
अन्नार्थी त्वं तमन्नेन समांसेनोपपादय ॥२५॥
25. gacchāmuṣminnasau deśe brāhmaṇo māṁ pratīkṣate ,
annārthī tvaṁ tamannena samāṁsenopapādaya.
25. gaccha amuṣmin asau deśe brāhmaṇaḥ mām pratīkṣate
annārthī tvam tam annena samāṃsena upapāday
25. Go! In that specific region, that Brahmin is waiting for me, for he is seeking food. You must provide him with food, including meat.
एवमुक्तस्तदा सूदः सोऽनासाद्यामिषं क्वचित् ।
निवेदयामास तदा तस्मै राज्ञे व्यथान्वितः ॥२६॥
26. evamuktastadā sūdaḥ so'nāsādyāmiṣaṁ kvacit ,
nivedayāmāsa tadā tasmai rājñe vyathānvitaḥ.
26. evam uktaḥ tadā sūdaḥ saḥ anāsādya āmiṣam kvacit
nivedayāmāsa tadā tasmai rājñe vyathānvitaḥ
26. Thus addressed, that cook, having failed to obtain meat anywhere, then reported to that king, feeling distressed.
राजा तु रक्षसाविष्टः सूदमाह गतव्यथः ।
अप्येनं नरमांसेन भोजयेति पुनः पुनः ॥२७॥
27. rājā tu rakṣasāviṣṭaḥ sūdamāha gatavyathaḥ ,
apyenaṁ naramāṁsena bhojayeti punaḥ punaḥ.
27. rājā tu rakṣasā āviṣṭaḥ sūdam āha gatavyathaḥ
api enam naramāṃsena bhojaya iti punaḥ punaḥ
27. However, the king, now possessed by a demon (rakṣas) and no longer distressed, repeatedly told the cook, 'Feed him even with human flesh!'
तथेत्युक्त्वा ततः सूदः संस्थानं वध्यघातिनाम् ।
गत्वा जहार त्वरितो नरमांसमपेतभीः ॥२८॥
28. tathetyuktvā tataḥ sūdaḥ saṁsthānaṁ vadhyaghātinām ,
gatvā jahāra tvarito naramāṁsamapetabhīḥ.
28. tathā iti uktvā tataḥ sūdaḥ saṃsthānaṃ vadhyaghātinām
gatvā jahāra tvaritaḥ naramāṃsam apeta-bhīḥ
28. Having assented, the fearless cook then quickly went to the executioners' quarter and fetched human flesh.
स तत्संस्कृत्य विधिवदन्नोपहितमाशु वै ।
तस्मै प्रादाद्ब्राह्मणाय क्षुधिताय तपस्विने ॥२९॥
29. sa tatsaṁskṛtya vidhivadannopahitamāśu vai ,
tasmai prādādbrāhmaṇāya kṣudhitāya tapasvine.
29. saḥ tat saṃskṛtya vidhivat annopahitam āśu vai
tasmai prādāt brāhmaṇāya kṣudhitāya tapasvine
29. Having quickly and properly prepared that (human flesh) mixed with other food, he indeed gave it to that hungry ascetic (brāhmaṇa).
स सिद्धचक्षुषा दृष्ट्वा तदन्नं द्विजसत्तमः ।
अभोज्यमिदमित्याह क्रोधपर्याकुलेक्षणः ॥३०॥
30. sa siddhacakṣuṣā dṛṣṭvā tadannaṁ dvijasattamaḥ ,
abhojyamidamityāha krodhaparyākulekṣaṇaḥ.
30. saḥ siddha-cakṣuṣā dṛṣṭvā tat annam dvijasattamaḥ
abhojyam idam iti āha krodhaparyākulekṣaṇaḥ
30. The foremost among brāhmaṇas, seeing that food with his perfected spiritual vision, exclaimed, "This is unfit to be eaten!" His eyes were agitated with anger.
यस्मादभोज्यमन्नं मे ददाति स नराधिपः ।
तस्मात्तस्यैव मूढस्य भविष्यत्यत्र लोलुपा ॥३१॥
31. yasmādabhojyamannaṁ me dadāti sa narādhipaḥ ,
tasmāttasyaiva mūḍhasya bhaviṣyatyatra lolupā.
31. yasmāt abhojyam annam me dadāti saḥ narādhipaḥ
tasmāt tasya eva mūḍhasya bhaviṣyati atra lolupā
31. Since that king gives me food that is unfit to be eaten, therefore, that foolish one himself will develop a craving (lolupā) for it.
सक्तो मानुषमांसेषु यथोक्तः शक्तिना पुरा ।
उद्वेजनीयो भूतानां चरिष्यति महीमिमाम् ॥३२॥
32. sakto mānuṣamāṁseṣu yathoktaḥ śaktinā purā ,
udvejanīyo bhūtānāṁ cariṣyati mahīmimām.
32. saktaḥ mānuṣamāṃseṣu yathā uktaḥ śaktinā purā
udvejanīyaḥ bhūtānām cariṣyati mahīm imām
32. Attached to human flesh, as predicted by the goddess Shakti (śakti) in the past, he will wander this earth, causing distress to all creatures.
द्विरनुव्याहृते राज्ञः स शापो बलवानभूत् ।
रक्षोबलसमाविष्टो विसंज्ञश्चाभवत्तदा ॥३३॥
33. dviranuvyāhṛte rājñaḥ sa śāpo balavānabhūt ,
rakṣobalasamāviṣṭo visaṁjñaścābhavattadā.
33. dvih anuvyāhṛte rājñah saḥ śāpaḥ balavān abhūt
rakṣobalasamāviṣṭaḥ visañjñaḥ ca abhuvat tadā
33. When the king uttered the curse a second time, it became powerful. Then, overwhelmed by the power of a demon (rakṣas), he became unconscious.
ततः स नृपतिश्रेष्ठो राक्षसोपहतेन्द्रियः ।
उवाच शक्तिं तं दृष्ट्वा नचिरादिव भारत ॥३४॥
34. tataḥ sa nṛpatiśreṣṭho rākṣasopahatendriyaḥ ,
uvāca śaktiṁ taṁ dṛṣṭvā nacirādiva bhārata.
34. tataḥ saḥ nṛpatiśreṣṭhaḥ rakṣasopahatendriyaḥ
uvāca śaktim tam dṛṣṭvā na cirāt iva bhārata
34. Then, that best of kings, whose senses were overpowered by a demon (rakṣas), seeing that Śakti, spoke these words, O Bhārata, as if not much time had passed.
यस्मादसदृशः शापः प्रयुक्तोऽयं त्वया मयि ।
तस्मात्त्वत्तः प्रवर्तिष्ये खादितुं मानुषानहम् ॥३५॥
35. yasmādasadṛśaḥ śāpaḥ prayukto'yaṁ tvayā mayi ,
tasmāttvattaḥ pravartiṣye khādituṁ mānuṣānaham.
35. yasmāt asadṛśaḥ śāpaḥ prayuktaḥ ayam tvayā mayi
tasmāt tvattaḥ pravartiṣye khāditum mānuṣān aham
35. “Because this inappropriate curse has been cast upon me by you, therefore, starting with you, I will proceed to devour human beings.”
एवमुक्त्वा ततः सद्यस्तं प्राणैर्विप्रयुज्य सः ।
शक्तिनं भक्षयामास व्याघ्रः पशुमिवेप्सितम् ॥३६॥
36. evamuktvā tataḥ sadyastaṁ prāṇairviprayujya saḥ ,
śaktinaṁ bhakṣayāmāsa vyāghraḥ paśumivepsitam.
36. evam uktvā tataḥ sadyaḥ tam prāṇaiḥ viprayujya saḥ
śaktinam bhakṣayām āsa vyāghraḥ paśum iva īpsitam
36. Having spoken thus, he immediately then separated him (Śakti) from his life-breaths and devoured Śaktin, just as a tiger devours a desired animal.
शक्तिनं तु हतं दृष्ट्वा विश्वामित्रस्ततः पुनः ।
वसिष्ठस्यैव पुत्रेषु तद्रक्षः संदिदेश ह ॥३७॥
37. śaktinaṁ tu hataṁ dṛṣṭvā viśvāmitrastataḥ punaḥ ,
vasiṣṭhasyaiva putreṣu tadrakṣaḥ saṁdideśa ha.
37. śaktinam tu hatam dṛṣṭvā viśvāmitraḥ tataḥ punaḥ
vasiṣṭhasya eva putreṣu tad rakṣaḥ sandideśa ha
37. But having seen Śaktin slain, Viśvāmitra then again directed that demon (rakṣas) towards the sons of Vasiṣṭha.
स ताञ्शतावरान्पुत्रान्वसिष्ठस्य महात्मनः ।
भक्षयामास संक्रुद्धः सिंहः क्षुद्रमृगानिव ॥३८॥
38. sa tāñśatāvarānputrānvasiṣṭhasya mahātmanaḥ ,
bhakṣayāmāsa saṁkruddhaḥ siṁhaḥ kṣudramṛgāniva.
38. saḥ tān śatāvarān putrān vasiṣṭhasya mahā-ātmanaḥ
bhakṣayāmāsa saṃkruddhaḥ siṃhaḥ kṣudra-mṛgān iva
38. That one, greatly enraged, devoured those hundreds of sons of the great-souled Vasiṣṭha (ātman), just as a lion devours small deer.
वसिष्ठो घातिताञ्श्रुत्वा विश्वामित्रेण तान्सुतान् ।
धारयामास तं शोकं महाद्रिरिव मेदिनीम् ॥३९॥
39. vasiṣṭho ghātitāñśrutvā viśvāmitreṇa tānsutān ,
dhārayāmāsa taṁ śokaṁ mahādririva medinīm.
39. vasiṣṭhaḥ ghātitān śrutvā viśvāmitreṇa tān sutān
dhārayāmāsa tam śokam mahā-adriḥ iva medinīm
39. Having heard that those sons were killed by Viśvāmitra, Vasiṣṭha bore that grief, just as a great mountain supports the earth.
चक्रे चात्मविनाशाय बुद्धिं स मुनिसत्तमः ।
न त्वेव कुशिकोच्छेदं मेने मतिमतां वरः ॥४०॥
40. cakre cātmavināśāya buddhiṁ sa munisattamaḥ ,
na tveva kuśikocchedaṁ mene matimatāṁ varaḥ.
40. cakre ca ātma-vināśāya buddhim saḥ muni-sattamaḥ
na tu eva kuśika-ucchedam mene matimatām varaḥ
40. And that best of sages resolved for self-destruction (ātman), but that foremost among the wise did not consider the destruction of Kuśika's lineage.
स मेरुकूटादात्मानं मुमोच भगवानृषिः ।
शिरस्तस्य शिलायां च तूलराशाविवापतत् ॥४१॥
41. sa merukūṭādātmānaṁ mumoca bhagavānṛṣiḥ ,
śirastasya śilāyāṁ ca tūlarāśāvivāpatat.
41. saḥ meru-kūṭāt ātmānam mumoca bhagavān ṛṣiḥ
śiraḥ tasya śilāyām ca tūla-rāśau iva āpatat
41. That venerable sage hurled his own self (ātman) from the peak of Mount Meru, and his head fell upon a rock as if onto a pile of cotton.
न ममार च पातेन स यदा तेन पाण्डव ।
तदाग्निमिद्ध्वा भगवान्संविवेश महावने ॥४२॥
42. na mamāra ca pātena sa yadā tena pāṇḍava ,
tadāgnimiddhvā bhagavānsaṁviveśa mahāvane.
42. na mamāra ca pātena saḥ yadā tena pāṇḍava tadā
agnim iddhvā bhagavān saṃviveśa mahā-vane
42. When he did not die from that fall, O Pāṇḍava, then the venerable one ignited a fire and entered a great forest.
तं तदा सुसमिद्धोऽपि न ददाह हुताशनः ।
दीप्यमानोऽप्यमित्रघ्न शीतोऽग्निरभवत्ततः ॥४३॥
43. taṁ tadā susamiddho'pi na dadāha hutāśanaḥ ,
dīpyamāno'pyamitraghna śīto'gnirabhavattataḥ.
43. taṃ tadā susamiddhaḥ api na dadāha hutāśanaḥ
dīpyamānaḥ api amitraghna śītaḥ agniḥ abhavat tataḥ
43. O slayer of enemies, even though the fire was well-kindled and blazing then, it did not burn him; instead, it became cool from that.
स समुद्रमभिप्रेत्य शोकाविष्टो महामुनिः ।
बद्ध्वा कण्ठे शिलां गुर्वीं निपपात तदम्भसि ॥४४॥
44. sa samudramabhipretya śokāviṣṭo mahāmuniḥ ,
baddhvā kaṇṭhe śilāṁ gurvīṁ nipapāta tadambhasi.
44. sa samudram abhipretya śokāviṣṭaḥ mahāmuniḥ
baddhvā kaṇṭhe śilām gurvīm nipapāta tat-ambhasi
44. Overcome by grief, that great sage went to the ocean, tied a heavy stone around his neck, and then plunged into its waters.
स समुद्रोर्मिवेगेन स्थले न्यस्तो महामुनिः ।
जगाम स ततः खिन्नः पुनरेवाश्रमं प्रति ॥४५॥
45. sa samudrormivegena sthale nyasto mahāmuniḥ ,
jagāma sa tataḥ khinnaḥ punarevāśramaṁ prati.
45. sa samudra-ūrmi-vegena sthale nyastaḥ mahāmuniḥ
jagāma sa tataḥ khinnaḥ punar eva āśramam prati
45. That great sage, having been deposited onto the dry land by the force of the ocean's waves, then, distressed, he returned again to his hermitage (āśrama).
