संजय उवाच ।
ते सेने शिबिरं गत्वा न्यविशेतां विशां पते ।
यथाभागं यथान्यायं यथागुल्मं च सर्वशः ॥१॥
1. saṁjaya uvāca ,
te sene śibiraṁ gatvā nyaviśetāṁ viśāṁ pate ,
yathābhāgaṁ yathānyāyaṁ yathāgulmaṁ ca sarvaśaḥ.

1. Saṃjaya said: O lord of men (viśām pate), those two armies, having gone to the camp, settled down according to their respective divisions, according to proper order, and fully according to their battalions.
कृत्वावहारं सैन्यानां द्रोणः परमदुर्मनाः ।
दुर्योधनमभिप्रेक्ष्य सव्रीडमिदमब्रवीत् ॥२॥
2. kṛtvāvahāraṁ sainyānāṁ droṇaḥ paramadurmanāḥ ,
duryodhanamabhiprekṣya savrīḍamidamabravīt.
2. kṛtvā avahāraṃ sainyānāṃ droṇaḥ paramadurmanāḥ
duryodhanam abhiprekṣya savrīḍam idam abravīt
2. sainyānāṃ avahāraṃ kṛtvā,

2. After withdrawing the armies, Drona, deeply disheartened, looked at Duryodhana and, feeling ashamed, spoke these words.
उक्तमेतन्मया पूर्वं न तिष्ठति धनंजये ।
शक्यो ग्रहीतुं संग्रामे देवैरपि युधिष्ठिरः ॥३॥
3. uktametanmayā pūrvaṁ na tiṣṭhati dhanaṁjaye ,
śakyo grahītuṁ saṁgrāme devairapi yudhiṣṭhiraḥ.
3. uktam etat mayā pūrvam na tiṣṭhati dhanañjaye
śakyaḥ grahītum saṃgrāme devaiḥ api yudhiṣṭhiraḥ
3. pūrvam mayā etat uktam.
dhanañjaye (sati) [yudhiṣṭhiraḥ] na tiṣṭhati.
saṃgrāme yudhiṣṭhiraḥ devaiḥ api grahītum na śakyaḥ.
3. I stated this previously: as long as Dhananjaya (Arjuna) is present, it is not possible for Yudhishthira to be captured in battle, not even by the gods.
इति तद्वः प्रयततां कृतं पार्थेन संयुगे ।
मातिशङ्कीर्वचो मह्यमजेयौ कृष्णपाण्डवौ ॥४॥
4. iti tadvaḥ prayatatāṁ kṛtaṁ pārthena saṁyuge ,
mātiśaṅkīrvaco mahyamajeyau kṛṣṇapāṇḍavau.
4. iti tat vaḥ prayatatām kṛtam pārthena saṃyuge
mā atiśaṅkīḥ vacaḥ mahyam ajeyau kṛṣṇapāṇḍavau
4. iti tat vaḥ prayatatām.
saṃyuge pārthena kṛtam (etat).
mahyam vacaḥ mā atiśaṅkīḥ.
kṛṣṇapāṇḍavau ajeyau.
4. Therefore, let that (capture) be striven for by you. In battle, [this has been] done by Partha (Arjuna). Do not distrust my words: Krishna and the Pandava (Arjuna) are unconquerable.
अपनीते तु योगेन केनचिच्छ्वेतवाहने ।
तत एष्यति ते राजन्वशमद्य युधिष्ठिरः ॥५॥
5. apanīte tu yogena kenacicchvetavāhane ,
tata eṣyati te rājanvaśamadya yudhiṣṭhiraḥ.
5. apanīte tu yogena kenacit śvetavāhane tataḥ
eṣyati te rājan vaśam adya yudhiṣṭhiraḥ
5. rājan! tu kenacit yogena śvetavāhane apanīte (sati),
tataḥ adya yudhiṣṭhiraḥ te vaśam eṣyati.
5. But if Shvetavahana (Arjuna) is removed by some stratagem (yoga), then, O King, Yudhishthira will come under your control today.
कश्चिदाह्वयतां संख्ये देशमन्यं प्रकर्षतु ।
तमजित्वा तु कौन्तेयो न निवर्तेत्कथंचन ॥६॥
6. kaścidāhvayatāṁ saṁkhye deśamanyaṁ prakarṣatu ,
tamajitvā tu kaunteyo na nivartetkathaṁcana.
6. kaścit āhvayatām saṅkhye deśam anyam prakarṣatu
tam ajitvā tu kaunteyaḥ na nivarteta kathaṃcana
6. kaścit saṅkhye āhvayatām anyam deśam [tam] prakarṣatu
tu kaunteyaḥ tam ajitvā kathaṃcana na nivarteta
6. Let someone challenge [Arjuna] in battle, or draw him away to another place. Arjuna, without conquering that opponent, will certainly not return under any circumstances.
एतस्मिन्नन्तरे शून्ये धर्मराजमहं नृप ।
ग्रहीष्यामि चमूं भित्त्वा धृष्टद्युम्नस्य पश्यतः ॥७॥
7. etasminnantare śūnye dharmarājamahaṁ nṛpa ,
grahīṣyāmi camūṁ bhittvā dhṛṣṭadyumnasya paśyataḥ.
7. etasmin antare śūnye dharmarājam aham nṛpa
grahīṣyāmi camūm bhittvā dhṛṣṭadyumnasya paśyataḥ
7. nṛpa aham etasmin śūnye antare camūm bhittvā
dhṛṣṭadyumnasya paśyataḥ dharmarājam grahīṣyāmi
7. O King, in this interval, when [he is] unprotected, I will seize King Yudhishthira (dharmarāja) by breaking through the army, even as Dhṛṣṭadyumna watches.
अर्जुनेन विहीनस्तु यदि नोत्सृजते रणम् ।
मामुपायान्तमालोक्य गृहीतमिति विद्धि तम् ॥८॥
8. arjunena vihīnastu yadi notsṛjate raṇam ,
māmupāyāntamālokya gṛhītamiti viddhi tam.
8. arjunena vihīnaḥ tu yadi na utsṛjate raṇam
mām upāyāntam ālokya gṛhītam iti viddhi tam
8. tu yadi arjunena vihīnaḥ [saḥ] raṇam na utsṛjate,
[tadā] mām upāyāntam ālokya,
tam gṛhītam iti viddhi
8. But if, deprived of Arjuna, he does not abandon the battle, then, upon perceiving me approaching, you should know that he is [as good as] captured.
एवं ते सहसा राजन्धर्मपुत्रं युधिष्ठिरम् ।
समानेष्यामि सगणं वशमद्य न संशयः ॥९॥
9. evaṁ te sahasā rājandharmaputraṁ yudhiṣṭhiram ,
samāneṣyāmi sagaṇaṁ vaśamadya na saṁśayaḥ.
9. evam te sahasā rājan dharmaputram yudhiṣṭhiram
samāneṣyāmi sagaṇam vaśam adya na saṃśayaḥ
9. rājan evam adya te dharmaputram yudhiṣṭhiram
sagaṇam sahasā vaśam samāneṣyāmi; na saṃśayaḥ
9. Thus, O King, I will quickly bring Yudhishthira, the son of Dharma (dharmaputra), along with his retinue, under your control today; there is no doubt about it.
यदि तिष्ठति संग्रामे मुहूर्तमपि पाण्डवः ।
अथापयाति संग्रामाद्विजयात्तद्विशिष्यते ॥१०॥
10. yadi tiṣṭhati saṁgrāme muhūrtamapi pāṇḍavaḥ ,
athāpayāti saṁgrāmādvijayāttadviśiṣyate.
10. yadi tiṣṭhati saṃgrāme muhūrtam api pāṇḍavaḥ
| atha apayāti saṃgrāmāt vijayāt tat viśiṣyate
10. yadi pāṇḍavaḥ saṃgrāme muhūrtam api tiṣṭhati atha (aham) saṃgrāmāt apayāti,
tat vijayāt viśiṣyate
10. If the Pāṇḍava (Arjuna) stands firm in battle for even a moment, and then I retreat from the fight, that (my retreat) would be considered superior to (my) victory.
द्रोणस्य तु वचः श्रुत्वा त्रिगर्ताधिपतिस्ततः ।
भ्रातृभिः सहितो राजन्निदं वचनमब्रवीत् ॥११॥
11. droṇasya tu vacaḥ śrutvā trigartādhipatistataḥ ,
bhrātṛbhiḥ sahito rājannidaṁ vacanamabravīt.
11. droṇasya tu vacaḥ śrutvā trigartādhipatiḥ tataḥ
| bhrātṛbhiḥ sahitaḥ rājan idam vacanam abravīt
11. rājan droṇasya vacaḥ śrutvā tataḥ bhrātṛbhiḥ
sahitaḥ trigartādhipatiḥ idam vacanam abravīt
11. O King, having heard Droṇa's words, the lord of Trigarta, accompanied by his brothers, then spoke these words.
वयं विनिकृता राजन्सदा गाण्डीवधन्वना ।
अनागःस्वपि चागस्कृदस्मासु भरतर्षभ ॥१२॥
12. vayaṁ vinikṛtā rājansadā gāṇḍīvadhanvanā ,
anāgaḥsvapi cāgaskṛdasmāsu bharatarṣabha.
12. vayam vinikṛtāḥ rājan sadā gāṇḍīvadhanvanā |
anāgas-su api ca āgas-kṛt asmāsu bharatarṣabha
12. rājan bharatarṣabha vayam sadā gāṇḍīvadhanvanā
vinikṛtāḥ asmāsu anāgas-su api ca saḥ āgas-kṛt
12. O King, O best of the Bhāratas, we have always been humiliated by Arjuna, the wielder of the Gāṇḍīva bow. Even when we were innocent, he committed offenses against us.
ते वयं स्मरमाणास्तान्विनिकारान्पृथग्विधान् ।
क्रोधाग्निना दह्यमाना न शेमहि सदा निशाः ॥१३॥
13. te vayaṁ smaramāṇāstānvinikārānpṛthagvidhān ,
krodhāgninā dahyamānā na śemahi sadā niśāḥ.
13. te vayam smaramāṇāḥ tān vinikārān pṛthag-vidhān
| krodhāgninā dahyamānāḥ na śemahi sadā niśāḥ
13. te vayam tān pṛthag-vidhān vinikārān smaramāṇāḥ
krodhāgninā dahyamānāḥ sadā niśāḥ na śemahi
13. Constantly recalling those various humiliations, and burning with the fire of our anger, we (the Trigartas) cannot sleep peacefully night after night.
स नो दिव्यास्त्रसंपन्नश्चक्षुर्विषयमागतः ।
कर्तारः स्म वयं सर्वं यच्चिकीर्षाम हृद्गतम् ॥१४॥
14. sa no divyāstrasaṁpannaścakṣurviṣayamāgataḥ ,
kartāraḥ sma vayaṁ sarvaṁ yaccikīrṣāma hṛdgatam.
14. saḥ naḥ divyāstrasampannaḥ cakṣurviṣayam āgataḥ
kartāraḥ sma vayam sarvam yat cikīrṣāma hṛd-gatam
14. saḥ divyāstrasampannaḥ āgataḥ cakṣurviṣayam naḥ
vayam sma kartāraḥ sarvam yat hṛd-gatam cikīrṣāma
14. He, equipped with divine weapons, has come within our sight. We are capable of accomplishing everything that we intend to do in our hearts.
भवतश्च प्रियं यत्स्यादस्माकं च यशस्करम् ।
वयमेनं हनिष्यामो निकृष्यायोधनाद्बहिः ॥१५॥
15. bhavataśca priyaṁ yatsyādasmākaṁ ca yaśaskaram ,
vayamenaṁ haniṣyāmo nikṛṣyāyodhanādbahiḥ.
15. bhavataḥ ca priyam yat syāt asmākam ca yaśaskaram
vayam enam haniṣyāmaḥ nikṛṣya āyodhanāt bahiḥ
15. yat syāt priyam bhavataḥ ca yaśaskaram asmākam
ca vayam enam nikṛṣya āyodhanāt bahiḥ haniṣyāmaḥ
15. That which would be pleasing to you and bring us glory, we shall achieve by dragging him out of the battlefield and killing him.
अद्यास्त्वनर्जुना भूमिरत्रिगर्ताथ वा पुनः ।
सत्यं ते प्रतिजानीमो नैतन्मिथ्या भविष्यति ॥१६॥
16. adyāstvanarjunā bhūmiratrigartātha vā punaḥ ,
satyaṁ te pratijānīmo naitanmithyā bhaviṣyati.
16. adya astu anarjunā bhūmiḥ atrigartā atha vā punaḥ
satyam te pratijānīmaḥ na etat mithyā bhaviṣyati
16. adya bhūmiḥ astu anarjunā vā atha punaḥ atrigartā
satyam te pratijānīmaḥ etat na mithyā bhaviṣyati
16. Today, let the earth be either without Arjuna or, alternatively, without the Trigarta region. We truly promise you, this will not prove false.
एवं सत्यरथश्चोक्त्वा सत्यधर्मा च भारत ।
सत्यवर्मा च सत्येषुः सत्यकर्मा तथैव च ॥१७॥
17. evaṁ satyarathaścoktvā satyadharmā ca bhārata ,
satyavarmā ca satyeṣuḥ satyakarmā tathaiva ca.
17. evam satyarathaḥ ca uktvā satyadharmā ca bhārata
satyavarmā ca satyeṣuḥ satyakarmā tathā eva ca
17. bhārata evam satyarathaḥ ca uktvā satyadharmā ca
satyavarmā ca satyeṣuḥ satyakarmā tathā eva ca
17. O Bhārata, thus spoke Satyaratha, and similarly Satyadharma, and Satyavarma, and Satyashu, and Satyakarman as well.
सहिता भ्रातरः पञ्च रथानामयुतेन च ।
न्यवर्तन्त महाराज कृत्वा शपथमाहवे ॥१८॥
18. sahitā bhrātaraḥ pañca rathānāmayutena ca ,
nyavartanta mahārāja kṛtvā śapathamāhave.
18. sahitāḥ bhrātaraḥ pañca rathānām ayutena ca
nyavartanta mahārāja kṛtvā śapatham āhave
18. mahārāja pañca sahitāḥ bhrātaraḥ ca rathānām
ayutena āhave śapatham kṛtvā nyavartanta
18. O great king, the five united brothers, accompanied by ten thousand chariots, returned after having taken an oath for battle.
मालवास्तुण्डिकेराश्च रथानामयुतैस्त्रिभिः ।
सुशर्मा च नरव्याघ्रस्त्रिगर्तः प्रस्थलाधिपः ॥१९॥
19. mālavāstuṇḍikerāśca rathānāmayutaistribhiḥ ,
suśarmā ca naravyāghrastrigartaḥ prasthalādhipaḥ.
19. mālavāḥ tuṇḍikerāḥ ca rathānām ayutaiḥ tribhiḥ
suśarmā ca naravyāghraḥ trigartaḥ prasthalādhipaḥ
19. mālavāḥ tuṇḍikerāḥ ca tribhiḥ ayutaiḥ rathānām
suśarmā ca naravyāghraḥ trigartaḥ prasthalādhipaḥ
19. The Malavas and Tuṇḍikeras, with three myriads (thirty thousand) of chariots, and Suśarman, the tiger among men, who is the king of Trigarta and the lord of Prasthala (prasthalādhipa).
माचेल्लकैर्ललित्थैश्च सहितो मद्रकैरपि ।
रथानामयुतेनैव सोऽशपद्भ्रातृभिः सह ॥२०॥
20. mācellakairlalitthaiśca sahito madrakairapi ,
rathānāmayutenaiva so'śapadbhrātṛbhiḥ saha.
20. mācellakaiḥ lalitthaiḥ ca sahitaḥ madrakaiḥ api
rathānām ayutena eva saḥ aśapat bhrātṛbhiḥ saha
20. saḥ mācellakaiḥ lalitthaiḥ ca api madrakaiḥ
sahitaḥ bhrātṛbhiḥ saha eva rathānām ayutena aśapat
20. Accompanied by the Macellakas, the Lalitthas, and also the Madrakas, he swore an oath with his brothers, along with ten thousand chariots.
नानाजनपदेभ्यश्च रथानामयुतं पुनः ।
समुत्थितं विशिष्टानां संशपार्थमुपागतम् ॥२१॥
21. nānājanapadebhyaśca rathānāmayutaṁ punaḥ ,
samutthitaṁ viśiṣṭānāṁ saṁśapārthamupāgatam.
21. nānājanapadebhyaḥ ca rathānām ayutam punaḥ
samutthitam viśiṣṭānām saṃśapārtham upāgatam
21. ca punaḥ nāṇājanapadebhyaḥ viśiṣṭānām rathānām
ayutam saṃśapārtham samutthitam upāgatam
21. And again, ten thousand chariots of distinguished warriors, having assembled from various countries, arrived for the purpose of the joint oath.
ततो ज्वलनमादाय हुत्वा सर्वे पृथक्पृथक् ।
जगृहुः कुशचीराणि चित्राणि कवचानि च ॥२२॥
22. tato jvalanamādāya hutvā sarve pṛthakpṛthak ,
jagṛhuḥ kuśacīrāṇi citrāṇi kavacāni ca.
22. tataḥ jvalanam ādāya hutvā sarve pṛthak
pṛthak jagṛhuḥ kuśacīrāṇi citrāṇi kavacāni ca
22. sarve tataḥ jvalanam ādāya hutvā pṛthak
pṛthak kuśacīrāṇi ca citrāṇi kavacāni jagṛhuḥ
22. Then, each of them took up fire, offered oblations, and separately donned garments of kuśa grass and colorful armors.
ते च बद्धतनुत्राणा घृताक्ताः कुशचीरिणः ।
मौर्वीमेखलिनो वीराः सहस्रशतदक्षिणाः ॥२३॥
23. te ca baddhatanutrāṇā ghṛtāktāḥ kuśacīriṇaḥ ,
maurvīmekhalino vīrāḥ sahasraśatadakṣiṇāḥ.
23. te ca baddhatanutrāṇāḥ ghṛtāktāḥ kuśacīriṇaḥ
maurvīmekhalinaḥ vīrāḥ sahasraśatadakṣiṇāḥ
23. te ca vīrāḥ baddhatanutrāṇāḥ ghṛtāktāḥ
kuśacīriṇaḥ maurvīmekhalinaḥ sahasraśatadakṣiṇāḥ
23. And those heroes, having donned their armors, anointed with ghee, wearing garments of kuśa grass and belts made of bowstring, were those who had offered many thousands as sacrificial fees (dakṣiṇā).
यज्वानः पुत्रिणो लोक्याः कृतकृत्यास्तनुत्यजः ।
योक्ष्यमाणास्तदात्मानं यशसा विजयेन च ॥२४॥
24. yajvānaḥ putriṇo lokyāḥ kṛtakṛtyāstanutyajaḥ ,
yokṣyamāṇāstadātmānaṁ yaśasā vijayena ca.
24. yajvānaḥ putriṇaḥ lokyāḥ kṛtakṛtyāḥ tanutyajaḥ
yokṣyamāṇāḥ tadā ātmānaṃ yaśasā vijayena ca
24. yajvānaḥ putriṇaḥ lokyāḥ kṛtakṛtyāḥ tanutyajaḥ
tadā ātmānaṃ yaśasā vijayena ca yokṣyamāṇāḥ
24. Those who have performed Vedic rituals (yajñas), who are blessed with sons, who are worthy of higher realms, and who have fulfilled their purpose, abandon their bodies (i.e., die). They are then about to unite their individual self (ātman) with fame and victory.
ब्रह्मचर्यश्रुतिमुखैः क्रतुभिश्चाप्तदक्षिणैः ।
प्राप्य लोकान्सुयुद्धेन क्षिप्रमेव यियासवः ॥२५॥
25. brahmacaryaśrutimukhaiḥ kratubhiścāptadakṣiṇaiḥ ,
prāpya lokānsuyuddhena kṣiprameva yiyāsavaḥ.
25. brahmacaryaśrutimukhaiḥ kratubhiḥ ca āptadakṣiṇaiḥ
prāpya lokān suyuddhena kṣipram eva yiyāsavaḥ
25. brahmacaryaśrutimukhaiḥ ca āptadakṣiṇaiḥ kratubhiḥ
suyuddhena kṣipram eva lokān prāpya yiyāsavaḥ
25. By means of celibacy (brahmacarya), Vedic study (śruti), and other such virtues, and through Vedic rituals (kratu) for which appropriate fees were distributed, they were eager to depart, having swiftly attained higher worlds through righteous battle.
ब्राह्मणांस्तर्पयित्वा च निष्कान्दत्त्वा पृथक्पृथक् ।
गाश्च वासांसि च पुनः समाभाष्य परस्परम् ॥२६॥
26. brāhmaṇāṁstarpayitvā ca niṣkāndattvā pṛthakpṛthak ,
gāśca vāsāṁsi ca punaḥ samābhāṣya parasparam.
26. brāhmaṇān tarpayitvā ca niṣkān dattvā pṛthak pṛthak
gāḥ ca vāsāṃsi ca punaḥ samābhāṣya parasparam
26. brāhmaṇān tarpayitvā ca niṣkān dattvā pṛthak pṛthak
gāḥ ca vāsāṃsi ca punaḥ samābhāṣya parasparam
26. After satisfying the brahmins and giving them nishkas, cows, and clothes individually, and also having conversed with each other.
प्रज्वाल्य कृष्णवर्त्मानमुपागम्य रणे व्रतम् ।
तस्मिन्नग्नौ तदा चक्रुः प्रतिज्ञां दृढनिश्चयाः ॥२७॥
27. prajvālya kṛṣṇavartmānamupāgamya raṇe vratam ,
tasminnagnau tadā cakruḥ pratijñāṁ dṛḍhaniścayāḥ.
27. prajvālya kṛṣṇavartmānam upāgamya raṇe vratam
tasmin agnau tadā cakruḥ pratijñām dṛḍhaniścayāḥ
27. dṛḍhaniścayāḥ kṛṣṇavartmānam prajvālya raṇe vratam
upāgamya tadā tasmin agnau pratijñām cakruḥ
27. Having kindled the fire (kṛṣṇavartman) and taken up their battle-vow (vrata), those of firm resolve then made a solemn pledge (pratijñā) in that very fire.
शृण्वतां सर्वभूतानामुच्चैर्वाचः स्म मेनिरे ।
धृत्वा धनंजयवधे प्रतिज्ञां चापि चक्रिरे ॥२८॥
28. śṛṇvatāṁ sarvabhūtānāmuccairvācaḥ sma menire ,
dhṛtvā dhanaṁjayavadhe pratijñāṁ cāpi cakrire.
28. śṛṇvatām sarvabhūtānām uccaiḥ vācaḥ sma menire
dhṛtvā dhanañjayavadhe pratijñām ca api cakrire
28. śṛṇvatām sarvabhūtānām uccaiḥ vācaḥ menire sma
ca api dhanañjayavadhe pratijñām dhṛtvā cakrire
28. And they loudly proclaimed their words while all beings listened, and also, they made a solemn vow (pratijñā) regarding the slaying of Dhanañjaya (Arjuna).
ये वै लोकाश्चानृतानां ये चैव ब्रह्मघातिनाम् ।
पानपस्य च ये लोका गुरुदाररतस्य च ॥२९॥
29. ye vai lokāścānṛtānāṁ ye caiva brahmaghātinām ,
pānapasya ca ye lokā gurudāraratasya ca.
29. ye vai lokāḥ ca anṛtānām ye ca eva brahmaghātinām
pānapasya ca ye lokāḥ gurudāraratasya ca
29. ye lokāḥ vai anṛtānām ca ye lokāḥ eva brahmaghātinām
ca ye lokāḥ pānapasya ca gurudāraratasya ca
29. Indeed, these are the worlds (lokāḥ) that belong to the untruthful, and also to the killers of brahmins; and the worlds that belong to the drinker of intoxicating liquor, and to one who indulges with the guru's wife.
ब्रह्मस्वहारिणश्चैव राजपिण्डापहारिणः ।
शरणागतं च त्यजतो याचमानं तथा घ्नतः ॥३०॥
30. brahmasvahāriṇaścaiva rājapiṇḍāpahāriṇaḥ ,
śaraṇāgataṁ ca tyajato yācamānaṁ tathā ghnataḥ.
30. brahmasvahāriṇaḥ ca eva rājapiṇḍāpahāriṇaḥ
śaraṇāgatam ca tyajataḥ yācamānam tathā ghnataḥ
30. brahmasvahāriṇaḥ ca eva rājapiṇḍāpahāriṇaḥ,
śaraṇāgatam tyajataḥ ca,
tathā yācamānam ghnataḥ
30. Those who steal the property of Brahmins, and who usurp the king's revenue; those who abandon one who has sought refuge, and likewise, those who kill a petitioner.
अगारदाहिनां ये च ये च गां निघ्नतामपि ।
अपचारिणां च ये लोका ये च ब्रह्मद्विषामपि ॥३१॥
31. agāradāhināṁ ye ca ye ca gāṁ nighnatāmapi ,
apacāriṇāṁ ca ye lokā ye ca brahmadviṣāmapi.
31. agāradāhinām ye ca ye ca gām nighnatām api
apacāriṇām ca ye lokāḥ ye ca brahmadviṣām api
31. ye ca agāradāhinām,
ye ca gām nighnatām api,
ye ca apacāriṇām,
ye ca brahmadviṣām api,
te lokāḥ
31. And the realms (lokāḥ) of those who set houses on fire, and also of those who kill a cow; and the realms (lokāḥ) of wrongdoers, and also of those who hate Brahmins.
जायां च ऋतुकाले वै ये मोहादभिगच्छताम् ।
श्राद्धसंगतिकानां च ये चाप्यात्मापहारिणाम् ॥३२॥
32. jāyāṁ ca ṛtukāle vai ye mohādabhigacchatām ,
śrāddhasaṁgatikānāṁ ca ye cāpyātmāpahāriṇām.
32. jāyām ca ṛtukāle vai ye mohāt abhigacchatām
śrāddhasaṅgatikānām ca ye ca api ātmāpahāriṇām
32. ye mohāt ṛtukāle vai jāyām abhigacchatām,
śrāddhasaṅgatikānām ca,
ye ca api ātmāpahāriṇām
32. And those (realms) belonging to those who, out of delusion, improperly approach a wife during her fertile period; those connected with inappropriate ancestral rites (śrāddha); and also those who harm their own (ātman) self.
न्यासापहारिणां ये च श्रुतं नाशयतां च ये ।
कोपेन युध्यमानानां ये च नीचानुसारिणाम् ॥३३॥
33. nyāsāpahāriṇāṁ ye ca śrutaṁ nāśayatāṁ ca ye ,
kopena yudhyamānānāṁ ye ca nīcānusāriṇām.
33. nyāsāpahāriṇām ye ca śrutam nāśayatām ca
ye kopen yudhyamānānām ye ca nīcānusāriṇām
33. ye ca nyāsāpahāriṇām,
śrutam nāśayatām ca ye,
kopen yudhyamānānām ye ca,
nīcānusāriṇām
33. And those (realms) belonging to those who steal deposits; those who destroy sacred knowledge (śrutam); those who fight out of anger; and those who follow base individuals.
नास्तिकानां च ये लोका येऽग्निहोरापितृत्यजाम् ।
तानाप्नुयामहे लोकान्ये च पापकृतामपि ॥३४॥
34. nāstikānāṁ ca ye lokā ye'gnihorāpitṛtyajām ,
tānāpnuyāmahe lokānye ca pāpakṛtāmapi.
34. nāstikānām ca ye lokāḥ ye agnihotra-pitṛtyajām
tān āpnuyāmahe lokān ye ca pāpakṛtām api
34. ca ye nāstikānām lokāḥ ye agnihotra-pitṛtyajām
ye ca pāpakṛtām api tān lokān āpnuyāmahe
34. We would attain those worlds that belong to atheists, and to those who abandon the Agnihotra (sacred fire ritual) and their ancestors (pitṛs), and also those of evildoers.
यद्यहत्वा वयं युद्धे निवर्तेम धनंजयम् ।
तेन चाभ्यर्दितास्त्रासाद्भवेम हि पराङ्मुखाः ॥३५॥
35. yadyahatvā vayaṁ yuddhe nivartema dhanaṁjayam ,
tena cābhyarditāstrāsādbhavema hi parāṅmukhāḥ.
35. yadi ahatvā vayam yuddhe nivartema dhanañjayam
tena ca abhyarditāḥ trāsāt bhavema hi parāṅmukhāḥ
35. yadi vayam dhanañjayam ahatvā yuddhe nivartema ca
tena abhyarditāḥ trāsāt hi parāṅmukhāḥ bhavema
35. If we were to withdraw from battle without killing Dhananjaya (Arjuna), then, afflicted by that (outcome), we would indeed turn away in fear.
यदि त्वसुकरं लोके कर्म कुर्याम संयुगे ।
इष्टान्पुण्यकृतां लोकान्प्राप्नुयाम न संशयः ॥३६॥
36. yadi tvasukaraṁ loke karma kuryāma saṁyuge ,
iṣṭānpuṇyakṛtāṁ lokānprāpnuyāma na saṁśayaḥ.
36. yadi tu asukaram loke karma kuryāma saṃyuge
iṣṭān puṇyakṛtām lokān prāpnuyāma na saṃśayaḥ
36. yadi tu asukaram karma loke saṃyuge kuryāma
iṣṭān puṇyakṛtām lokān prāpnuyāma na saṃśayaḥ
36. But if we perform a difficult deed in battle, we would undoubtedly attain the desirable worlds of those who perform meritorious deeds.
एवमुक्त्वा ततो राजंस्तेऽभ्यवर्तन्त संयुगे ।
आह्वयन्तोऽर्जुनं वीराः पितृजुष्टां दिशं प्रति ॥३७॥
37. evamuktvā tato rājaṁste'bhyavartanta saṁyuge ,
āhvayanto'rjunaṁ vīrāḥ pitṛjuṣṭāṁ diśaṁ prati.
37. evam uktvā tataḥ rājan te abhyavartanta saṃyuge
āhvayantaḥ arjunam vīrāḥ pitṛjuṣṭām diśam prati
37. rājan evam uktvā tataḥ te vīrāḥ saṃyuge arjunam
āhvayantaḥ pitṛjuṣṭām diśam prati abhyavartanta
37. O King, having spoken thus, those heroes then advanced into battle, challenging Arjuna as they moved towards the direction frequented by ancestors (pitṛs).
आहूतस्तैर्नरव्याघ्रैः पार्थः परपुरंजयः ।
धर्मराजमिदं वाक्यमपदान्तरमब्रवीत् ॥३८॥
38. āhūtastairnaravyāghraiḥ pārthaḥ parapuraṁjayaḥ ,
dharmarājamidaṁ vākyamapadāntaramabravīt.
38. āhūtaḥ taiḥ naravyāghraiḥ pārthaḥ parapuraṃjayaḥ
dharmarājam idam vākyam apadāntaram abravīt
38. taiḥ naravyāghraiḥ āhūtaḥ parapuraṃjayaḥ pārthaḥ
dharmarājam idam apadāntaram vākyam abravīt
38. Summoned by those mighty warriors, Partha (Arjuna), the conqueror of enemy cities, immediately spoke these words to Dharmarāja.
आहूतो न निवर्तेयमिति मे व्रतमाहितम् ।
संशप्तकाश्च मां राजन्नाह्वयन्ति पुनः पुनः ॥३९॥
39. āhūto na nivarteyamiti me vratamāhitam ,
saṁśaptakāśca māṁ rājannāhvayanti punaḥ punaḥ.
39. āhūtaḥ na nivarteya iti me vratam āhitam
saṃśaptakāḥ ca mām rājan āhvayanti punaḥ punaḥ
39. rājan,
"āhūtaḥ na nivarteya" iti me vratam āhitam,
ca saṃśaptakāḥ mām punaḥ punaḥ āhvayanti.
39. "Once summoned, I must not turn back," - this is the vow (vrata) I have undertaken. O King, the Saṃśaptakas are calling me again and again.
एष च भ्रातृभिः सार्धं सुशर्माह्वयते रणे ।
वधाय सगणस्यास्य मामनुज्ञातुमर्हसि ॥४०॥
40. eṣa ca bhrātṛbhiḥ sārdhaṁ suśarmāhvayate raṇe ,
vadhāya sagaṇasyāsya māmanujñātumarhasi.
40. eṣaḥ ca bhrātṛbhiḥ sārdham suśarmā āhvayate
raṇe vadhāya sagṇasya asya mām anujñātum arhasi
40. eṣaḥ suśarmā ca bhrātṛbhiḥ sārdham raṇe āhvayate.
asya sagaṇasya vadhāya mām anujñātum arhasi.
40. And this Suśarman, along with his brothers, is challenging me in battle. You ought to permit me to kill this entire host of his.
नैतच्छक्नोमि संसोढुमाह्वानं पुरुषर्षभ ।
सत्यं ते प्रतिजानामि हतान्विद्धि परान्युधि ॥४१॥
41. naitacchaknomi saṁsoḍhumāhvānaṁ puruṣarṣabha ,
satyaṁ te pratijānāmi hatānviddhi parānyudhi.
41. na etat śaknomi saṃsoḍhum āhvānam puruṣarṣabha
satyam te pratijānāmi hatān viddhi parān yudhi
41. puruṣarṣabha,
etat āhvānam na saṃsoḍhum śaknomi.
te satyam pratijānāmi,
parān yudhi hatān viddhi.
41. I am unable to endure this challenge, O best among men (puruṣarṣabha). I truly promise you: know the enemies to be dead in battle!
युधिष्ठिर उवाच ।
श्रुतमेतत्त्वया तात यद्द्रोणस्य चिकीर्षितम् ।
यथा तदनृतं तस्य भवेत्तद्वत्समाचर ॥४२॥
42. yudhiṣṭhira uvāca ,
śrutametattvayā tāta yaddroṇasya cikīrṣitam ,
yathā tadanṛtaṁ tasya bhavettadvatsamācara.
42. yudhiṣṭhiraḥ uvāca śrutam etat tvayā tāta yat droṇasya
cikīrṣitam yathā tat anṛtam tasya bhavet tadvat samācara
42. yudhiṣṭhiraḥ uvāca tāta tvayā yat droṇasya cikīrṣitam
etat śrutam yathā tat tasya anṛtam bhavet tadvat samācara
42. Yudhishthira said: "Dear sir, you have heard what Drona intends to do. Act in such a way that his intention becomes false."
द्रोणो हि बलवाञ्शूरः कृतास्त्रश्च जितश्रमः ।
प्रतिज्ञातं च तेनैतद्ग्रहणं मे महारथ ॥४३॥
43. droṇo hi balavāñśūraḥ kṛtāstraśca jitaśramaḥ ,
pratijñātaṁ ca tenaitadgrahaṇaṁ me mahāratha.
43. droṇaḥ hi balavān śūraḥ kṛtāstraḥ ca jitaśramaḥ
pratijñātam ca tena etat grahaṇam me mahāratha
43. mahāratha droṇaḥ hi balavān śūraḥ kṛtāstraḥ ca
jitaśramaḥ ca tena me etat grahaṇam pratijñātam
43. Indeed, Drona is mighty, brave, accomplished in the use of weapons, and tireless. And by him, O great charioteer, this vow has been made to capture me.
अर्जुन उवाच ।
अयं वै सत्यजिद्राजन्नद्य ते रक्षिता युधि ।
ध्रियमाणे हि पाञ्चाल्ये नाचार्यः काममाप्स्यति ॥४४॥
44. arjuna uvāca ,
ayaṁ vai satyajidrājannadya te rakṣitā yudhi ,
dhriyamāṇe hi pāñcālye nācāryaḥ kāmamāpsyati.
44. arjunaḥ uvāca ayam vai satyajit rājan adya te rakṣitā
yudhi dhriyamāṇe hi pāñcālye na ācāryaḥ kāmam āpsyati
44. arjunaḥ uvāca rājan ayam satyajit vai adya te yudhi
rakṣitā hi pāñcālye dhriyamāṇe ācāryaḥ kāmam na āpsyati
44. Arjuna said: "Indeed, O king, this Satyajit will protect you today in battle. For as long as Panchalya (Dhṛṣṭadyumna) is alive, the teacher (Drona) will not achieve his objective."
हते तु पुरुषव्याघ्रे रणे सत्यजिति प्रभो ।
सर्वैरपि समेतैर्वा न स्थातव्यं कथंचन ॥४५॥
45. hate tu puruṣavyāghre raṇe satyajiti prabho ,
sarvairapi sametairvā na sthātavyaṁ kathaṁcana.
45. hate tu puruṣavyāghre raṇe satyajiti prabho
sarvaiḥ api sametaiḥ vā na sthātavyam kathaṃcana
45. prabho tu raṇe puruṣavyāghre satyajiti hate
sarvaiḥ sametaiḥ api vā kathaṃcana na sthātavyam
45. But, O lord, if that tiger among men, Satyajit, is slain in battle, then it should by no means be endured by all of us combined.
संजय उवाच ।
अनुज्ञातस्ततो राज्ञा परिष्वक्तश्च फल्गुनः ।
प्रेम्णा दृष्टश्च बहुधा आशिषा च प्रयोजितः ॥४६॥
46. saṁjaya uvāca ,
anujñātastato rājñā pariṣvaktaśca phalgunaḥ ,
premṇā dṛṣṭaśca bahudhā āśiṣā ca prayojitaḥ.
46. saṃjaya uvāca anujñātaḥ tataḥ rājñā pariṣvaktaḥ ca
phālgunaḥ premṇā dṛṣṭaḥ ca bahudhā āśiṣā ca prayojitaḥ

premṇā bahudhā dṛṣṭaḥ ca āśiṣā ca prayojitaḥ phālgunaḥ
46. Sanjaya said: Then, Arjuna (phālguna), having received permission from the king, was embraced by him and affectionately regarded in many ways, and was sent off with blessings.
विहायैनं ततः पार्थस्त्रिगर्तान्प्रत्ययाद्बली ।
क्षुधितः क्षुद्विघातार्थं सिंहो मृगगणानिव ॥४७॥
47. vihāyainaṁ tataḥ pārthastrigartānpratyayādbalī ,
kṣudhitaḥ kṣudvighātārthaṁ siṁho mṛgagaṇāniva.
47. vihāya enam tataḥ pārthaḥ trigartān pratyayāt balī
kṣudhitaḥ kṣut-vighāta-artham siṃhaḥ mṛgagaṇān iva
47. tataḥ balī pārthaḥ enam vihāya kṣudhitaḥ siṃhaḥ
kṣut-vighāta-artham mṛgagaṇān iva trigartān pratyayāt
47. Having left him, the mighty Arjuna (pārtha) then went towards the Trigartas, just as a hungry lion, seeking to quell its hunger, approaches herds of deer.
ततो दौर्योधनं सैन्यं मुदा परमया युतम् ।
गतेऽर्जुने भृशं क्रुद्धं धर्मराजस्य निग्रहे ॥४८॥
48. tato dauryodhanaṁ sainyaṁ mudā paramayā yutam ,
gate'rjune bhṛśaṁ kruddhaṁ dharmarājasya nigrahe.
48. tataḥ dauryodhanaṃ sainyaṃ mudā paramayā yutam
gate arjune bhṛśaṃ kruddhaṃ dharmarājasya nigrahe
48. tataḥ arjune gate dauryodhanaṃ sainyaṃ paramayā mudā yutam
(sat) dharmarājasya nigrahe bhṛśaṃ kruddhaṃ (abhavat)
48. Then Duryodhana's army, filled with supreme joy (at Arjuna's departure), became greatly enraged at the capture of Yudhiṣṭhira (dharmarāja).
ततोऽन्योन्येन ते सेने समाजग्मतुरोजसा ।
गङ्गासरय्वोर्वेगेन प्रावृषीवोल्बणोदके ॥४९॥
49. tato'nyonyena te sene samājagmaturojasā ,
gaṅgāsarayvorvegena prāvṛṣīvolbaṇodake.
49. tataḥ anyonyena te sene samājagmatuḥ ojasā
gaṅgā-sarayvoh vegena prāvṛṣi iva ulbaṇa-udake
49. tataḥ te sene anyonyena ojasā samājagmatuḥ,
prāvṛṣi gaṅgā-sarayvoh ulbaṇa-udake vegena iva (samājagmatuḥ)
49. Then those two armies clashed with each other with great vigor, just as the powerfully surging waters of the Gaṅgā and Sarayū rivers meet during the rainy season.
