प्रोक्तस्त्वया पूर्वमेव प्रवीरो लोकविश्रुतः ।
न त्वस्य कर्म संग्रामे त्वया संजय कीर्तितम् ॥१॥

proktastvayā pūrvameva pravīro lokaviśrutaḥ ,
na tvasya karma saṁgrāme tvayā saṁjaya kīrtitam.

1. Dhṛtarāṣṭra said: "You have indeed already mentioned the world-renowned hero. But, O Sañjaya, his actions (karma) in battle have not been recounted by you."
तस्य विस्तरतो ब्रूहि प्रवीरस्याद्य विक्रमम् ।
शिक्षां प्रभावं वीर्यं च प्रमाणं दर्पमेव च ॥२॥
2. tasya vistarato brūhi pravīrasyādya vikramam ,
śikṣāṁ prabhāvaṁ vīryaṁ ca pramāṇaṁ darpameva ca.

2. Tell me today, in detail, about the valor, training, influence, strength, authority, and pride of that great hero.
संजय उवाच ।
द्रोणभीष्मकृपद्रौणिकर्णार्जुनजनार्दनान् ।
समाप्तविद्यान्धनुषि श्रेष्ठान्यान्मन्यसे युधि ॥३॥
3. saṁjaya uvāca ,
droṇabhīṣmakṛpadrauṇikarṇārjunajanārdanān ,
samāptavidyāndhanuṣi śreṣṭhānyānmanyase yudhi.

samāptavidyān dhanuṣi śreṣṭhān yān manyase yudhi

3. Sañjaya said: (I shall speak of) those, like Droṇa, Bhīṣma, Kṛpa, Drauṇi, Karṇa, Arjuna, and Janārdana (Kṛṣṇa), whom you consider supreme in archery, accomplished in knowledge, and (mighty) in battle.
तुल्यता कर्णभीष्माभ्यामात्मनो येन दृश्यते ।
वासुदेवार्जुनाभ्यां च न्यूनतां नात्मनीच्छति ॥४॥
4. tulyatā karṇabhīṣmābhyāmātmano yena dṛśyate ,
vāsudevārjunābhyāṁ ca nyūnatāṁ nātmanīcchati.
4. tulyatā karṇabhīṣmābhyām ātmanaḥ yena dṛśyate
vāsudevārjunābhyām ca nyūnatām na ātmani icchati

4. He (the Pāṇḍya king) considers his own self (ātman) equal to Karṇa and Bhīṣma, and he does not wish for any inferiority for his own self (ātman) compared to Vāsudeva (Kṛṣṇa) and Arjuna.
स पाण्ड्यो नृपतिश्रेष्ठः सर्वशस्त्रभृतां वरः ।
कर्णस्यानीकमवधीत्परिभूत इवान्तकः ॥५॥
5. sa pāṇḍyo nṛpatiśreṣṭhaḥ sarvaśastrabhṛtāṁ varaḥ ,
karṇasyānīkamavadhītparibhūta ivāntakaḥ.

5. That Pāṇḍya king, the foremost of rulers and the best among all weapon-bearers, indeed destroyed Karṇa's army, like Antaka (the god of death), having been insulted.
तदुदीर्णरथाश्वं च पत्तिप्रवरकुञ्जरम् ।
कुलालचक्रवद्भ्रान्तं पाण्ड्येनाधिष्ठितं बलम् ॥६॥
6. tadudīrṇarathāśvaṁ ca pattipravarakuñjaram ,
kulālacakravadbhrāntaṁ pāṇḍyenādhiṣṭhitaṁ balam.
6. tat udīrṇarathāśvam ca pattipravarakuñjaram
kulālacakravat bhrāntam pāṇḍyena adhiṣṭhitam balam
6. pāṇḍyena adhiṣṭhitam balam tat udīrṇarathāśvam

6. The army, commanded by the Pāṇḍya, which was stirred with chariots, horses, and excellent infantry and elephants, whirled like a potter's wheel.
व्यश्वसूतध्वजरथान्विप्रविद्धायुधान्रिपून् ।
सम्यगस्तैः शरैः पाण्ड्यो वायुर्मेघानिवाक्षिपत् ॥७॥
7. vyaśvasūtadhvajarathānvipraviddhāyudhānripūn ,
samyagastaiḥ śaraiḥ pāṇḍyo vāyurmeghānivākṣipat.

samyagastaiḥ śaraiḥ pāṇḍyaḥ vāyuḥ meghān iva akṣipat

7. With accurately shot arrows, the Pāṇḍya king scattered his enemies—who had lost their horses, charioteers, banners, and chariots, and whose weapons lay discarded—just as the wind scatters clouds.
द्विरदान्प्रहतप्रोथान्विपताकध्वजायुधान् ।
सपादरक्षानवधीद्वज्रेणारीनिवारिहा ॥८॥
8. dviradānprahataprothānvipatākadhvajāyudhān ,
sapādarakṣānavadhīdvajreṇārīnivārihā.

8. He (the Pāṇḍya king) slew the elephants—whose coverings were struck down, whose banners, flags, and weapons were lost, along with their foot-guards—just as Indra, the slayer of enemies, kills his foes with a thunderbolt.
सशक्तिप्रासतूणीरानश्वारोहान्हयानपि ।
पुलिन्दखशबाह्लीकान्निषादान्ध्रकतङ्गणान् ॥९॥
9. saśaktiprāsatūṇīrānaśvārohānhayānapi ,
pulindakhaśabāhlīkānniṣādāndhrakataṅgaṇān.
9. saśaktiprāsatūṇīrān aśvārohān hayān api
pulindakhaśabāhlīkān niṣādāndhrakataṅgaṇān

9. He also slew the horsemen—equipped with their spears, javelins, and quivers—and their horses. Similarly, he killed the Pulindas, Khaśas, Bāhlīkas, Niṣādas, Andhras, and Tangaṇas.
दाक्षिणात्यांश्च भोजांश्च क्रूरान्संग्रामकर्कशान् ।
विशस्त्रकवचान्बाणैः कृत्वा पाण्ड्योऽकरोद्व्यसून् ॥१०॥
10. dākṣiṇātyāṁśca bhojāṁśca krūrānsaṁgrāmakarkaśān ,
viśastrakavacānbāṇaiḥ kṛtvā pāṇḍyo'karodvyasūn.
10. dākṣiṇātyān ca bhojān ca krūrān saṅgrāmakarkaśān
viśastrakavacān bāṇaiḥ kṛtvā pāṇḍyaḥ akarot vyasūn

10. The Pandyan king, using his arrows, rendered the Southerners and the Bhojas—who were cruel and unyielding in battle—weaponless and armorless, and then deprived them of life.
चतुरङ्गं बलं बाणैर्निघ्नन्तं पाण्ड्यमाहवे ।
दृष्ट्वा द्रौणिरसंभ्रान्तमसंभ्रान्ततरोऽभ्ययात् ॥११॥
11. caturaṅgaṁ balaṁ bāṇairnighnantaṁ pāṇḍyamāhave ,
dṛṣṭvā drauṇirasaṁbhrāntamasaṁbhrāntataro'bhyayāt.
11. caturaṅgam balam bāṇaiḥ nighnantam pāṇḍyam āhave
dṛṣṭvā drauṇiḥ asaṃbhrāntam asaṃbhrāntataraḥ abhyayāt
11. drauṇiḥ āhave bāṇaiḥ caturaṅgam balam nighnantam

11. Having observed the Pandyan king, who was calm and undisturbed, striking down the four-limbed army with his arrows in battle, Droṇi's son (Aśvatthāman) approached him with even greater composure.
आभाष्य चैनं मधुरमभि नृत्यन्नभीतवत् ।
प्राह प्रहरतां श्रेष्ठः स्मितपूर्वं समाह्वयन् ॥१२॥
12. ābhāṣya cainaṁ madhuramabhi nṛtyannabhītavat ,
prāha praharatāṁ śreṣṭhaḥ smitapūrvaṁ samāhvayan.
12. ābhāṣya ca enam madhuram abhi nṛtyan abhītavat
prāha praharatām śreṣṭhaḥ smitapūrvam samāhvayan
12. ca praharatām śreṣṭhaḥ enam madhuram ābhāṣya abhi

12. And, having addressed him sweetly, dancing on the battlefield as if fearless, the best among warriors spoke with a smile, challenging him (to combat).
राजन्कमलपत्राक्ष प्रधानायुधवाहन ।
वज्रसंहननप्रख्य प्रधानबलपौरुष ॥१३॥
13. rājankamalapatrākṣa pradhānāyudhavāhana ,
vajrasaṁhananaprakhya pradhānabalapauruṣa.

vajrasaṃhananaprakhya pradhānabalapauruṣa

13. O King, whose eyes are like lotus petals! O wielder of chief weapons and master of mounts! O one whose physique resembles the firmness of a thunderbolt! O you of supreme strength and valor!
मुष्टिश्लिष्टायुधाभ्यां च व्यायताभ्यां महद्धनुः ।
दोर्भ्यां विस्फारयन्भासि महाजलदवद्भृशम् ॥१४॥
14. muṣṭiśliṣṭāyudhābhyāṁ ca vyāyatābhyāṁ mahaddhanuḥ ,
dorbhyāṁ visphārayanbhāsi mahājaladavadbhṛśam.
14. muṣṭiśliṣṭāyudhābhyām ca vyāyatābhyām mahat dhanuḥ
dorbhyām visphārayan bhāsi mahājaladavat bhṛśam

14. With your two outstretched arms, firmly grasping your weapons in your fists, as you stretch your great bow, you shine intensely, like a vast rain cloud.
शरवर्षैर्महावेगैरमित्रानभिवर्षतः ।
मदन्यं नानुपश्यामि प्रतिवीरं तवाहवे ॥१५॥
15. śaravarṣairmahāvegairamitrānabhivarṣataḥ ,
madanyaṁ nānupaśyāmi prativīraṁ tavāhave.
15. śaravarṣaiḥ mahāvegaiḥ amitrān abhivarṣataḥ
mat anyam na anupaśyāmi prativīram tava āhave
15. mat anyam prativīram tava āhave na anupaśyāmi
śaravarṣaiḥ mahāvegaiḥ amitrān abhivarṣataḥ
15. As you shower down arrows of great speed upon your enemies, I see no warrior who can match you in battle, other than myself.
रथद्विरदपत्त्यश्वानेकः प्रमथसे बहून् ।
मृगसंघानिवारण्ये विभीर्भीमबलो हरिः ॥१६॥
16. rathadviradapattyaśvānekaḥ pramathase bahūn ,
mṛgasaṁghānivāraṇye vibhīrbhīmabalo hariḥ.
16. rathadviradapattayaśvān ekaḥ pramathase bahūn
mṛgasaṅghān iva araṇye vibhīḥ bhīmabalaḥ hariḥ
16. ekaḥ bahūn rathadviradapattayaśvān pramathase
iva araṇye vibhīḥ bhīmabalaḥ hariḥ mṛgasaṅghān
16. Alone, you crush many chariots, elephants, infantry, and horses, just as a fearless lion of tremendous strength destroys herds of deer in a forest.
महता रथघोषेण दिवं भूमिं च नादयन् ।
वर्षान्ते सस्यहा पीथो भाभिरापूरयन्निव ॥१७॥
17. mahatā rathaghoṣeṇa divaṁ bhūmiṁ ca nādayan ,
varṣānte sasyahā pītho bhābhirāpūrayanniva.
17. mahatā rathaghoṣeṇa divam bhūmim ca nādayan
varṣānte sasyahā pīthaḥ bhābhiḥ āpūrayan iva
17. mahatā rathaghoṣeṇa divam bhūmim ca nādayan

17. Causing the sky and earth to resound with the mighty roar of your chariots, just as the sun at the end of the rainy season, which dries up crops, seems to fill everything with its rays.
संस्पृशानः शरांस्तीक्ष्णांस्तूणादाशीविषोपमान् ।
मयैवैकेन युध्यस्व त्र्यम्बकेणान्धको यथा ॥१८॥
18. saṁspṛśānaḥ śarāṁstīkṣṇāṁstūṇādāśīviṣopamān ,
mayaivaikena yudhyasva tryambakeṇāndhako yathā.
18. saṃspṛśānaḥ śarān tīkṣṇān tūṇāt āśīviṣopamān mayā
eva ekena yudhyasva tryambakeṇa andhakaḥ yathā
18. ekena mayā eva yudhyasva saṃspṛśānaḥ tīkṣṇān
āśīviṣopamān śarān tūṇāt yathā andhakaḥ tryambakeṇa
18. Taking sharp arrows from the quiver, arrows that resemble venomous snakes, fight only with me, just as Andhaka fought with Tryambaka (Lord Shiva).
एवमुक्तस्तथेत्युक्त्वा प्रहरेति च ताडितः ।
कर्णिना द्रोणतनयं विव्याध मलयध्वजः ॥१९॥
19. evamuktastathetyuktvā prahareti ca tāḍitaḥ ,
karṇinā droṇatanayaṁ vivyādha malayadhvajaḥ.
19. evam uktaḥ tathā iti uktvā prahara iti ca tāḍitaḥ
karṇinā droṇatanayam vivyādha malayadhvajaḥ
19. malayadhvajaḥ evam uktaḥ tathā iti uktvā prahara
iti ca tāḍitaḥ karṇinā droṇatanayam vivyādha
19. Thus addressed, saying 'So be it' and 'Strike!', and though himself struck by arrows, Malayadhvaja pierced Drona's son (Aśvatthāmā) with his shafted arrows.
मर्मभेदिभिरत्युग्रैर्बाणैरग्निशिखोपमैः ।
स्मयन्नभ्यहनद्द्रौणिः पाण्ड्यमाचार्यसत्तमः ॥२०॥
20. marmabhedibhiratyugrairbāṇairagniśikhopamaiḥ ,
smayannabhyahanaddrauṇiḥ pāṇḍyamācāryasattamaḥ.
20. marmabhedibhiḥ ati ugraiḥ bāṇaiḥ agniśikhopamaiḥ
smayan abhyahanat drauṇiḥ pāṇḍyam ācāryasattamaḥ
20. smayan ācāryasattamaḥ drauṇiḥ marmabhedibhiḥ ati
ugraiḥ agniśikhopamaiḥ bāṇaiḥ pāṇḍyam abhyahanat
20. Smiling, Droṇi (Aśvatthāmā), the foremost among teachers (guru), struck the Pandya king (Malayadhvaja) with arrows that pierced vital spots, were exceedingly terrible, and resembled flames of fire.
ततो नवापरांस्तीक्ष्णान्नाराचान्कङ्कवाससः ।
गत्या दशम्या संयुक्तानश्वत्थामा व्यवासृजत् ॥२१॥
21. tato navāparāṁstīkṣṇānnārācānkaṅkavāsasaḥ ,
gatyā daśamyā saṁyuktānaśvatthāmā vyavāsṛjat.
21. tataḥ nava aparān tīkṣṇān nārācān kaṅkavāsasaḥ
gatyā daśamyā saṃyuktān aśvatthāmā vyavāsṛjat
21. tataḥ aśvatthāmā nava aparān tīkṣṇān kaṅkavāsasaḥ
daśamyā gatyā saṃyuktān nārācān vyavāsṛjat
21. Then Aśvatthāmā released nine other sharp, iron arrows, fletched with heron feathers, which flew with extreme speed.
तेषां पञ्चाच्छिनत्पाण्ड्यः पञ्चभिर्निशितैः शरैः ।
चत्वारोऽभ्याहनन्वाहानाशु ते व्यसवोऽभवन् ॥२२॥
22. teṣāṁ pañcācchinatpāṇḍyaḥ pañcabhirniśitaiḥ śaraiḥ ,
catvāro'bhyāhananvāhānāśu te vyasavo'bhavan.
22. teṣām pañca acchinat pāṇḍyaḥ pañcabhiḥ niśitaiḥ śaraiḥ
catvāraḥ abhyāhanan vāhān āśu te vyasavaḥ abhavan
22. pāṇḍyaḥ pañcabhiḥ niśitaiḥ śaraiḥ teṣām pañca acchinat (tataḥ)
catvāraḥ (śarāḥ) vāhān abhyāhanan te āśu vyasavaḥ abhavan
22. Pāṇḍya, with five sharp arrows, cut down five of his (opponent's) [arrows/weapons]. Four (of Pāṇḍya's arrows) struck the horses, and those (horses) immediately became lifeless.
अथ द्रोणसुतस्येषूंस्तांश्छित्त्वा निशितैः शरैः ।
धनुर्ज्यां विततां पाण्ड्यश्चिच्छेदादित्यवर्चसः ॥२३॥
23. atha droṇasutasyeṣūṁstāṁśchittvā niśitaiḥ śaraiḥ ,
dhanurjyāṁ vitatāṁ pāṇḍyaścicchedādityavarcasaḥ.
23. atha droṇasutasya iṣūn tān chittvā niśitaiḥ śaraiḥ
dhanurjyām vitatām pāṇḍyaḥ ciccheda ādityavarcasaḥ
23. atha ādityavarcasaḥ pāṇḍyaḥ niśitaiḥ śaraiḥ droṇasutasya tān iṣūn chittvā,
(tasya) vitatām dhanurjyām ciccheda
23. Then, Pāṇḍya, brilliant as the sun, having severed those arrows of Droṇa's son (Ashvatthama) with sharp arrows, cut his (Ashvatthama's) strung bowstring.
विज्यं धनुरथाधिज्यं कृत्वा द्रौणिरमित्रहा ।
ततः शरसहस्राणि प्रेषयामास पाण्ड्यतः ।
इषुसंबाधमाकाशमकरोद्दिश एव च ॥२४॥
24. vijyaṁ dhanurathādhijyaṁ kṛtvā drauṇiramitrahā ,
tataḥ śarasahasrāṇi preṣayāmāsa pāṇḍyataḥ ,
iṣusaṁbādhamākāśamakaroddiśa eva ca.
24. vijyam dhanuḥ atha adhijyam kṛtvā
drauṇiḥ amitrahā tataḥ śarasahasrāṇi
preṣayām āsa pāṇḍyataḥ
iṣusaṃbādham ākāśam akarot diśaḥ eva ca
24. atha amitrahā drauṇiḥ (svasya) vijyam dhanuḥ adhijyam kṛtvā,
tataḥ pāṇḍyataḥ śarasahasrāṇi preṣayām āsa (saḥ) ākāśam diśaḥ eva ca iṣusaṃbādham akarot
24. Then, Droṇa's son (Ashvatthama), the slayer of enemies, having strung his bow that was without a string, thereafter dispatched thousands of arrows towards Pāṇḍya. He made the sky and all directions crowded with arrows.
ततस्तानस्यतः सर्वान्द्रौणेर्बाणान्महात्मनः ।
जानानोऽप्यक्षयान्पाण्ड्योऽशातयत्पुरुषर्षभः ॥२५॥
25. tatastānasyataḥ sarvāndrauṇerbāṇānmahātmanaḥ ,
jānāno'pyakṣayānpāṇḍyo'śātayatpuruṣarṣabhaḥ.
25. tataḥ tān asyataḥ sarvān drauṇeḥ bāṇān mahātmanaḥ
jānan api akṣayān pāṇḍyaḥ aśātayat puruṣarṣabhaḥ
25. tataḥ puruṣarṣabhaḥ pāṇḍyaḥ,
mahātmanaḥ drauṇeḥ tān sarvān asyataḥ akṣayān bāṇān api jānan,
aśātayat
25. Then, Pāṇḍya, the best among men (puruṣa), even though he knew those inexhaustible arrows being discharged by the great-souled Droṇa's son, struck them all down.
प्रहितांस्तान्प्रयत्नेन छित्त्वा द्रौणेरिषूनरिः ।
चक्ररक्षौ ततस्तस्य प्राणुदन्निशितैः शरैः ॥२६॥
26. prahitāṁstānprayatnena chittvā drauṇeriṣūnariḥ ,
cakrarakṣau tatastasya prāṇudanniśitaiḥ śaraiḥ.
26. prahitān tān prayatnena chittvā drauṇeḥ iṣūn ariḥ
cakrarakṣau tataḥ tasya prāṇudan niśitaiḥ śaraiḥ
26. ariḥ prayatnena tān prahitān drauṇeḥ iṣūn chittvā
tataḥ tasya cakrarakṣau niśitaiḥ śaraiḥ prāṇudan
26. The enemy, having diligently cut down those arrows shot by Droṇa's son, then struck his two chariot-wheel protectors with sharp arrows.
अथारेर्लाघवं दृष्ट्वा मण्डलीकृतकार्मुकः ।
प्रास्यद्द्रोणसुतो बाणान्वृष्टिं पूषानुजो यथा ॥२७॥
27. athārerlāghavaṁ dṛṣṭvā maṇḍalīkṛtakārmukaḥ ,
prāsyaddroṇasuto bāṇānvṛṣṭiṁ pūṣānujo yathā.
27. atha areḥ lāghavam dṛṣṭvā maṇḍalīkṛtakārmukaḥ
prāsyat droṇasutaḥ bāṇān vṛṣṭim pūṣānujaḥ yathā
27. atha droṇasutaḥ areḥ lāghavam dṛṣṭvā
maṇḍalīkṛtakārmukaḥ yathā pūṣānujaḥ bāṇān vṛṣṭim prāsyat
27. Then, having witnessed the enemy's swiftness, Droṇa's son, with his bow drawn into a circle, shot a shower of arrows, just as the younger brother of Pūṣan (Indra) sends forth rain.
अष्टावष्टगवान्यूहुः शकटानि यदायुधम् ।
अह्नस्तदष्टभागेन द्रौणिश्चिक्षेप मारिष ॥२८॥
28. aṣṭāvaṣṭagavānyūhuḥ śakaṭāni yadāyudham ,

28. O venerable one, Droṇa's son (Drauṇi) fired off so many arrows that he emptied eight wagons, each drawn by eight oxen and laden with his weaponry, within just one-eighth part of that day.
तमन्तकमिव क्रुद्धमन्तकालान्तकोपमम् ।
ये ये ददृशिरे तत्र विसंज्ञाः प्रायशोऽभवन् ॥२९॥
29. tamantakamiva kruddhamantakālāntakopamam ,
ye ye dadṛśire tatra visaṁjñāḥ prāyaśo'bhavan.

29. Those who saw him there, enraged like Yama, the Destroyer, and resembling the very destroyer of the Destroyer of Time (Shiva or Vishnu), mostly became senseless.
पर्जन्य इव घर्मान्ते वृष्ट्या साद्रिद्रुमां महीम् ।
आचार्यपुत्रस्तां सेनां बाणवृष्ट्याभ्यवीवृषत् ॥३०॥

30. Just as a rain-cloud at the end of summer showers the earth, along with its mountains and trees, with rain, similarly, the preceptor's son showered that army with a torrent of arrows.
द्रौणिपर्जन्यमुक्तां तां बाणवृष्टिं सुदुःसहाम् ।
वायव्यास्त्रेण स क्षिप्रं रुद्ध्वा पाण्ड्यानिलोऽनदत् ॥३१॥
31. drauṇiparjanyamuktāṁ tāṁ bāṇavṛṣṭiṁ suduḥsahām ,
vāyavyāstreṇa sa kṣipraṁ ruddhvā pāṇḍyānilo'nadat.

31. That exceedingly difficult-to-endure rain of arrows, released by Drauni (who was like a rain-cloud), was quickly blocked by him. Then, the Pāṇḍya king, like a wind, roared aloud.
तस्य नानदतः केतुं चन्दनागुरुभूषितम् ।
मलयप्रतिमं द्रौणिश्छित्त्वाश्वांश्चतुरोऽहनत् ॥३२॥
32. tasya nānadataḥ ketuṁ candanāgurubhūṣitam ,
malayapratimaṁ drauṇiśchittvāśvāṁścaturo'hanat.

32. While he (the Pāṇḍya) was roaring, Drauni cut down his banner – which was adorned with sandalwood and agallochum and resembled Mount Malaya – and then he killed his four horses.
सूतमेकेषुणा हत्वा महाजलदनिस्वनम् ।
धनुश्छित्त्वार्धचन्द्रेण व्यधमत्तिलशो रथम् ॥३३॥
33. sūtamekeṣuṇā hatvā mahājaladanisvanam ,

33. Having killed the charioteer (whose battle cry was like a great thundercloud) with a single arrow, and having cut his bow with a crescent-shaped arrow, he then completely shattered the chariot into tiny pieces.
अस्त्रैरस्त्राणि संवार्य छित्त्वा सर्वायुधानि च ।
प्राप्तमप्यहितं द्रौणिर्न जघान रणेप्सया ॥३४॥

34. Aśvatthāman, having parried weapons with his own and severed all of the enemy's armaments, did not kill the approaching foe, driven by his eagerness for battle.
हतेश्वरो दन्तिवरः सुकल्पितस्त्वराभिसृष्टः प्रतिशर्मगो बली ।
तमध्यतिष्ठन्मलयेश्वरो महान्यथाद्रिशृङ्गं हरिरुन्नदंस्तथा ॥३५॥
35. hateśvaro dantivaraḥ sukalpita;stvarābhisṛṣṭaḥ pratiśarmago balī ,
tamadhyatiṣṭhanmalayeśvaro mahā;nyathādriśṛṅgaṁ harirunnadaṁstathā.

35. The great and powerful lord of Malaya mounted that finest of elephants – an elephant whose master had been slain, which was well-trained, swiftly dispatched, and advancing against Śarma – just as a roaring lion ascends a mountain peak.
स तोमरं भास्कररश्मिसंनिभं बलास्त्रसर्गोत्तमयत्नमन्युभिः ।
ससर्ज शीघ्रं प्रतिपीडयन्गजं गुरोः सुतायाद्रिपतीश्वरो नदन् ॥३६॥
36. sa tomaraṁ bhāskararaśmisaṁnibhaṁ; balāstrasargottamayatnamanyubhiḥ ,
sasarja śīghraṁ pratipīḍayangajaṁ; guroḥ sutāyādripatīśvaro nadan.

36. That great lord of the mountain (Malaya), roaring, swiftly launched a javelin, shining like the sun's rays, crushing the elephant, with his strength, supreme effort in weapon-release, and wrath, (targeting) the son of the preceptor (Aśvatthāman).
मणिप्रतानोत्तमवज्रहाटकैरलंकृतं चांशुकमाल्यमौक्तिकैः ।
हतोऽस्यसावित्यसकृन्मुदा नदन्पराभिनद्द्रौणिवराङ्गभूषणम् ॥३७॥

37. And, repeatedly exclaiming with joy, 'His (elephant) is killed!', the roaring (lord of Malaya) shattered the splendid body ornament of Drauṇi (Aśvatthāman), an ornament adorned with excellent clusters of jewels, diamonds, gold, fine cloths, garlands, and pearls.
तदर्कचन्द्रग्रहपावकत्विषं भृशाभिघातात्पतितं विचूर्णितम् ।
महेन्द्रवज्राभिहतं महावनं यथाद्रिशृङ्गं धरणीतले तथा ॥३८॥
38. tadarkacandragrahapāvakatviṣaṁ; bhṛśābhighātātpatitaṁ vicūrṇitam ,
mahendravajrābhihataṁ mahāvanaṁ; yathādriśṛṅgaṁ dharaṇītale tathā.

38. That being, brilliant with the splendor of the sun, moon, planets, and fire, fell from a mighty impact, completely crushed, just as a mountain peak struck by Indra's thunderbolt, or a great forest, lies shattered on the earth's surface.

39. Then, just as a lord of elephants, when struck by a foot, flares up with extreme rage, so too did he blaze with intense anger. And he took up fourteen arrows, which resembled the staff of Death (Antaka) and were capable of ending his enemies.

40. He killed the elephant's four feet and trunk with five (arrows), and the king's two arms and head with three (arrows). With six (arrows), he struck down the Pāṇḍya king's great charioteer followers, who possessed a radiance like the finest of the six seasons.
सुदीर्घवृत्तौ वरचन्दनोक्षितौ सुवर्णमुक्तामणिवज्रभूषितौ ।
भुजौ धरायां पतितौ नृपस्य तौ विवेष्टतुस्तार्क्ष्यहताविवोरगौ ॥४१॥
41. sudīrghavṛttau varacandanokṣitau; suvarṇamuktāmaṇivajrabhūṣitau ,
bhujau dharāyāṁ patitau nṛpasya tau; viveṣṭatustārkṣyahatāvivoragau.

41. Those two arms of the king—very long, rounded, anointed with exquisite sandalwood paste, and adorned with gold, pearls, jewels, and diamonds—fell to the earth. There, they writhed like two snakes struck by Tārkṣya (Garuda).
शिरश्च तत्पूर्णशशिप्रभाननं सरोषताम्रायतनेत्रमुन्नसम् ।
क्षितौ विबभ्राज पतत्सकुण्डलं विशाखयोर्मध्यगतः शशी यथा ॥४२॥

42. That head, with a face radiant like the full moon, angry, reddish, and wide eyes, and a prominent nose, lay fallen on the ground with its earrings, gleaming like the moon positioned between the two Viśākha stars.
समाप्तविद्यं तु गुरोः सुतं नृपः समाप्तकर्माणमुपेत्य ते सुतः ।
सुहृद्वृतोऽत्यर्थमपूजयन्मुदा जिते बलौ विष्णुमिवामरेश्वरः ॥४३॥
43. samāptavidyaṁ tu guroḥ sutaṁ nṛpaḥ; samāptakarmāṇamupetya te sutaḥ ,
suhṛdvṛto'tyarthamapūjayanmudā; jite balau viṣṇumivāmareśvaraḥ.

43. Your son, O King, surrounded by friends, having approached the guru's son—who had completed his education (vidyā) and duties (karma)—greatly honored him with joy, just as the lord of the gods (Indra) honored Viṣṇu when the demon Bala was conquered.
