इन्द्र उवाच ।
सर्वाणि कर्माणि समाप्य राजन्गृहान्परित्यज्य वनं गतोऽसि ।
तत्त्वां पृच्छामि नहुषस्य पुत्र केनासि तुल्यस्तपसा ययाते ॥१॥
1. indra uvāca ,
sarvāṇi karmāṇi samāpya rāja;ngṛhānparityajya vanaṁ gato'si ,
tattvāṁ pṛcchāmi nahuṣasya putra; kenāsi tulyastapasā yayāte.
1. indra uvāca sarvāṇi karmāṇi samāpya
rājan gṛhān parityajya vanam gataḥ
asi tat tvām pṛcchāmi nahuṣasya
putra kena asi tulyaḥ tapasā yayāte
1. Indra said: "O king, having completed all your duties and abandoned your homes, you have gone to the forest. Therefore, O son of Nahusha, Yayati, I ask you: to whom are you equal in tapas?"
ययातिरुवाच ।
नाहं देवमनुष्येषु न गन्धर्वमहर्षिषु ।
आत्मनस्तपसा तुल्यं कंचित्पश्यामि वासव ॥२॥
2. yayātiruvāca ,
nāhaṁ devamanuṣyeṣu na gandharvamaharṣiṣu ,
ātmanastapasā tulyaṁ kaṁcitpaśyāmi vāsava.
2. yayātiḥ uvāca na aham devamanuṣyeṣu na gandharvamaharṣiṣu
ātmanaḥ tapasā tulyam kañcit paśyāmi vāsava
2. Yayati said: "O Vasava, I do not see anyone among gods or men, nor among Gandharvas and great sages, who is equal to my own tapas."
इन्द्र उवाच ।
यदावमंस्थाः सदृशः श्रेयसश्च पापीयसश्चाविदितप्रभावः ।
तस्माल्लोका अन्तवन्तस्तवेमे क्षीणे पुण्ये पतितास्यद्य राजन् ॥३॥
3. indra uvāca ,
yadāvamaṁsthāḥ sadṛśaḥ śreyasaśca; pāpīyasaścāviditaprabhāvaḥ ,
tasmāllokā antavantastaveme; kṣīṇe puṇye patitāsyadya rājan.
3. indra uvāca yat avamansthāḥ sadṛśaḥ
śreyasaḥ ca pāpīyasaḥ ca aviditaprabhāvaḥ
tasmāt lokāḥ antavantaḥ tava
ime kṣīṇe puṇye patitāḥ asi adya rājan
3. Indra said: "Because you, unaware of their true power, disrespected your equals, superiors, and even your inferiors, these worlds you attained are therefore perishable. With your merit exhausted, O king, you have fallen today."
ययातिरुवाच ।
सुरर्षिगन्धर्वनरावमानात्क्षयं गता मे यदि शक्र लोकाः ।
इच्छेयं वै सुरलोकाद्विहीनः सतां मध्ये पतितुं देवराज ॥४॥
4. yayātiruvāca ,
surarṣigandharvanarāvamānā;tkṣayaṁ gatā me yadi śakra lokāḥ ,
iccheyaṁ vai suralokādvihīnaḥ; satāṁ madhye patituṁ devarāja.
4. yayātiḥ uvāca surarṣigandharvanarāvamānāt
kṣayaṃ gatā me yadi śakra
lokāḥ iccheyam vai suralokāt
vihīnaḥ satāṃ madhye patituṃ devarāja
4. Yayati said: 'O Shakra, O King of gods, if my worlds have been destroyed due to the disrespect shown by Surarshis, Gandharvas, and humans, then I would indeed wish to fall among the virtuous, even if I am deprived of the celestial realms.'
इन्द्र उवाच ।
सतां सकाशे पतितासि राजंश्च्युतः प्रतिष्ठां यत्र लब्धासि भूयः ।
एवं विदित्वा तु पुनर्ययाते न तेऽवमान्याः सदृशः श्रेयसश्च ॥५॥
5. indra uvāca ,
satāṁ sakāśe patitāsi rājaṁ;ścyutaḥ pratiṣṭhāṁ yatra labdhāsi bhūyaḥ ,
evaṁ viditvā tu punaryayāte; na te'vamānyāḥ sadṛśaḥ śreyasaśca.
5. indraḥ uvāca satāṃ sakāśe patitā asi
rājan cyutaḥ pratiṣṭhāṃ yatra labdhā
asi bhūyaḥ evam viditvā tu punaḥ yayāte
na te avamānyāḥ sadṛśaḥ śreyasaḥ ca
5. Indra said: 'O King, you have fallen among the virtuous, where you will regain your position. Therefore, O Yayati, knowing this, you should not disrespect them again, for they are indeed excellent and bring about welfare.'
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
ततः प्रहायामरराजजुष्टान्पुण्याँल्लोकान्पतमानं ययातिम् ।
संप्रेक्ष्य राजर्षिवरोऽष्टकस्तमुवाच सद्धर्मविधानगोप्ता ॥६॥
6. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
tataḥ prahāyāmararājajuṣṭā;npuṇyāँllokānpatamānaṁ yayātim ,
saṁprekṣya rājarṣivaro'ṣṭakasta;muvāca saddharmavidhānagoptā.
6. vaiśaṃpāyanaḥ uvāca tataḥ prahāya
amararājajuṣṭān puṇyān lokān patamānam
yayātim samprekṣya rājarṣivaraḥ
aṣṭakaḥ tam uvāca saddharmavidhānagoptā
6. Vaishampayana said: Then, Ashtaka, the foremost of royal sages and guardian of the principles of true dharma, observing Yayati as he fell from the meritorious worlds frequented by the king of gods, spoke to him.
कस्त्वं युवा वासवतुल्यरूपः स्वतेजसा दीप्यमानो यथाग्निः ।
पतस्युदीर्णाम्बुधरान्धकारात्खात्खेचराणां प्रवरो यथार्कः ॥७॥
7. kastvaṁ yuvā vāsavatulyarūpaḥ; svatejasā dīpyamāno yathāgniḥ ,
patasyudīrṇāmbudharāndhakārā;tkhātkhecarāṇāṁ pravaro yathārkaḥ.
7. kaḥ tvam yuvā vāsavatulyarūpaḥ
svatejasā dīpyamānaḥ yathā agniḥ
patasi udīrṇāmbudharāndhakārāt
khāt khecarāṇām pravaraḥ yathā arkaḥ
7. Who are you, young man, whose form resembles Indra, shining with your own splendor like fire? You are falling from the sky, which is darkened by surging clouds, like the sun, the foremost among celestial beings.
दृष्ट्वा च त्वां सूर्यपथात्पतन्तं वैश्वानरार्कद्युतिमप्रमेयम् ।
किं नु स्विदेतत्पततीति सर्वे वितर्कयन्तः परिमोहिताः स्मः ॥८॥
8. dṛṣṭvā ca tvāṁ sūryapathātpatantaṁ; vaiśvānarārkadyutimaprameyam ,
kiṁ nu svidetatpatatīti sarve; vitarkayantaḥ parimohitāḥ smaḥ.
8. dṛṣṭvā ca tvām sūryapathāt patantam
vaiśvānārārkadyutim aprameyam
kim nu svit etat patati iti
sarve vitarkayantaḥ parimohitāḥ smaḥ
8. And having seen you falling from the sun's path, shining with immeasurable brilliance like the fire god Vaśvānara and the sun, we all became utterly bewildered, wondering 'What indeed is this falling object?'
दृष्ट्वा च त्वां विष्ठितं देवमार्गे शक्रार्कविष्णुप्रतिमप्रभावम् ।
अभ्युद्गतास्त्वां वयमद्य सर्वे तत्त्वं पाते तव जिज्ञासमानाः ॥९॥
9. dṛṣṭvā ca tvāṁ viṣṭhitaṁ devamārge; śakrārkaviṣṇupratimaprabhāvam ,
abhyudgatāstvāṁ vayamadya sarve; tattvaṁ pāte tava jijñāsamānāḥ.
9. dṛṣṭvā ca tvām viṣṭhitam devamārge
śakrārkaviṣṇupratimaprabhāvam
abhyudgatāḥ tvām vayam adya sarve
tattvam pāte tava jijñāsamānāḥ
9. Having seen you, endowed with splendor like Indra, Sūrya, and Viṣṇu, standing on the path of the gods, all of us have come to meet you today, seeking to understand the truth of your nature.
न चापि त्वां धृष्णुमः प्रष्टुमग्रे न च त्वमस्मान्पृच्छसि ये वयं स्मः ।
तत्त्वां पृच्छामः स्पृहणीयरूपं कस्य त्वं वा किंनिमित्तं त्वमागाः ॥१०॥
10. na cāpi tvāṁ dhṛṣṇumaḥ praṣṭumagre; na ca tvamasmānpṛcchasi ye vayaṁ smaḥ ,
tattvāṁ pṛcchāmaḥ spṛhaṇīyarūpaṁ; kasya tvaṁ vā kiṁnimittaṁ tvamāgāḥ.
10. na ca api tvām dhṛṣṇumaḥ praṣṭum agre
na ca tvam asmān pṛcchasi ye vayam
smaḥ tat tvām pṛcchāmaḥ spṛhaṇīyarūpam
kasya tvam vā kimnimittam tvam āgāḥ
10. Nor do we dare to ask you first, nor do you ask us who we are. Therefore, we ask you, who possess a desirable form: whose are you, and for what reason have you come?
भयं तु ते व्येतु विषादमोहौ त्यजाशु देवेन्द्रसमानरूप ।
त्वां वर्तमानं हि सतां सकाशे नालं प्रसोढुं बलहापि शक्रः ॥११॥
11. bhayaṁ tu te vyetu viṣādamohau; tyajāśu devendrasamānarūpa ,
tvāṁ vartamānaṁ hi satāṁ sakāśe; nālaṁ prasoḍhuṁ balahāpi śakraḥ.
11. bhayam tu te vyetu viṣādamohau
tyaja āśu devendrasamānarūpa tvām
vartamānam hi satām sakāśe na
alam prasoḍhum balahā api śakraḥ
11. Indeed, let your fear, dejection, and delusion quickly vanish, O one whose form resembles the lord of the gods. For even Indra, the slayer of Bala, is certainly not capable of enduring you when you are present among the virtuous.
सन्तः प्रतिष्ठा हि सुखच्युतानां सतां सदैवामरराजकल्प ।
ते संगताः स्थावरजङ्गमेशाः प्रतिष्ठितस्त्वं सदृशेषु सत्सु ॥१२॥
12. santaḥ pratiṣṭhā hi sukhacyutānāṁ; satāṁ sadaivāmararājakalpa ,
te saṁgatāḥ sthāvarajaṅgameśāḥ; pratiṣṭhitastvaṁ sadṛśeṣu satsu.
12. santaḥ pratiṣṭhā hi sukhacyutānām
satām sadā eva amararājakalpa
te saṃgatāḥ sthāvarajaṅgameśāḥ
pratiṣṭhitaḥ tvam sadṛśeṣu satsu
12. Indeed, the virtuous are always a refuge for those deprived of happiness, O one who resembles the lord of the immortals. These assembled lords of stationary and moving beings are present, and you are established among your equals, the virtuous ones.
प्रभुरग्निः प्रतपने भूमिरावपने प्रभुः ।
प्रभुः सूर्यः प्रकाशित्वे सतां चाभ्यागतः प्रभुः ॥१३॥
13. prabhuragniḥ pratapane bhūmirāvapane prabhuḥ ,
prabhuḥ sūryaḥ prakāśitve satāṁ cābhyāgataḥ prabhuḥ.
13. prabhuḥ agniḥ pratapane bhūmiḥ āvāpane prabhuḥ
prabhuḥ sūryaḥ prakāśitve satām ca abhyāgataḥ prabhuḥ
13. Fire is mighty in its burning; the earth is mighty in sowing seeds. The sun is mighty in giving light, and a guest to the virtuous is also mighty.
