संजय उवाच ।
क्रूरमायोधनं जज्ञे तस्मिन्राजसमागमे ।
रुद्रस्येव हि क्रुद्धस्य निघ्नतस्तु पशून्यथा ॥१॥
1. saṁjaya uvāca ,
krūramāyodhanaṁ jajñe tasminrājasamāgame ,
rudrasyeva hi kruddhasya nighnatastu paśūnyathā.

1. Sanjaya said: Indeed, a fierce battle (āyodhana) occurred in that assembly of kings (rājasamāgama), just as when the enraged Rudra kills sacrificial animals.
हस्तानामुत्तमाङ्गानां कार्मुकाणां च भारत ।
छत्राणां चापविद्धानां चामराणां च संयुगे ॥२॥
2. hastānāmuttamāṅgānāṁ kārmukāṇāṁ ca bhārata ,
chatrāṇāṁ cāpaviddhānāṁ cāmarāṇāṁ ca saṁyuge.

2. O Bharata, in the battle (saṃyuga), one could see hands, heads, bows, and scattered umbrellas and yak-tail whisks (cāmara).
भग्नचक्रै रथैश्चापि पातितैश्च महाध्वजैः ।
सादिभिश्च हतैः शूरैः संकीर्णा वसुधाभवत् ॥३॥
3. bhagnacakrai rathaiścāpi pātitaiśca mahādhvajaiḥ ,
sādibhiśca hataiḥ śūraiḥ saṁkīrṇā vasudhābhavat.

3. The earth became covered with chariots whose wheels were shattered, with great banners that had been struck down, and with slain heroic horsemen.
बाणपातनिकृत्तास्तु योधास्ते कुरुसत्तम ।
चेष्टन्तो विविधाश्चेष्टा व्यदृश्यन्त महाहवे ॥४॥
4. bāṇapātanikṛttāstu yodhāste kurusattama ,
ceṣṭanto vividhāśceṣṭā vyadṛśyanta mahāhave.

4. O best of the Kurus, those warriors, cut down by the hail of arrows, were seen performing various movements and struggles on the great battlefield.
वर्तमाने तथा युद्धे घोरे देवासुरोपमे ।
अब्रवीत्क्षत्रियांस्तत्र धर्मराजो युधिष्ठिरः ।
अभिद्रवत संयत्ताः कुम्भयोनिं महारथाः ॥५॥
5. vartamāne tathā yuddhe ghore devāsuropame ,
abravītkṣatriyāṁstatra dharmarājo yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ,
abhidravata saṁyattāḥ kumbhayoniṁ mahārathāḥ.

5. As the dreadful battle, resembling a conflict between gods and asuras, was ongoing, Yudhiṣṭhira, the King of natural law (dharma), then said to the Kṣatriyas: "O great charioteers, prepared for battle, attack Kumbhayoni (Droṇa)!"
एष वै पार्षतो वीरो भारद्वाजेन संगतः ।
घटते च यथाशक्ति भारद्वाजस्य नाशने ॥६॥
6. eṣa vai pārṣato vīro bhāradvājena saṁgataḥ ,
ghaṭate ca yathāśakti bhāradvājasya nāśane.

6. Indeed, this hero, Dṛṣṭadyumna, being engaged with Droṇa (the son of Bhāradvāja), strives with all his might for the destruction of Droṇa (the son of Bhāradvāja).
यादृशानि हि रूपाणि दृश्यन्ते नो महारणे ।
अद्य द्रोणं रणे क्रुद्धः पातयिष्यति पार्षतः ।
ते यूयं सहिता भूत्वा कुम्भयोनिं परीप्सत ॥७॥
7. yādṛśāni hi rūpāṇi dṛśyante no mahāraṇe ,
adya droṇaṁ raṇe kruddhaḥ pātayiṣyati pārṣataḥ ,
te yūyaṁ sahitā bhūtvā kumbhayoniṁ parīpsata.
7. yādṛśāni hi rūpāṇi dṛśyante no
mahāraṇe adya droṇam raṇe kruddhaḥ

7. Indeed, such forms are not seen in the great battle. Today, the enraged son of Pṛṣata will fell Droṇa in battle. Therefore, all of you, having assembled, should strive to protect the one born from a pot (Kumbhayoni).
युधिष्ठिरसमाज्ञप्ताः सृञ्जयानां महारथाः ।
अभ्यद्रवन्त संयत्ता भारद्वाजं जिघांसवः ॥८॥
8. yudhiṣṭhirasamājñaptāḥ sṛñjayānāṁ mahārathāḥ ,
abhyadravanta saṁyattā bhāradvājaṁ jighāṁsavaḥ.

8. The great charioteers of the Sṛñjayas, well-equipped and ordered by Yudhiṣṭhira, rushed towards Bharadvāja (Droṇa), eager to kill him.
तान्समापततः सर्वान्भारद्वाजो महारथः ।
अभ्यद्रवत वेगेन मर्तव्यमिति निश्चितः ॥९॥
9. tānsamāpatataḥ sarvānbhāradvājo mahārathaḥ ,
abhyadravata vegena martavyamiti niścitaḥ.

abhyadravata vegena martavyam iti niścitaḥ

9. The great charioteer Bharadvāja (Droṇa), resolute in his mind that he must die, rushed with speed towards all of those (Sṛñjaya warriors) who were advancing.
प्रयाते सत्यसंधे तु समकम्पत मेदिनी ।
ववुर्वाताः सनिर्घातास्त्रासयन्तो वरूथिनीम् ॥१०॥
10. prayāte satyasaṁdhe tu samakampata medinī ,
vavurvātāḥ sanirghātāstrāsayanto varūthinīm.

vavur vātāḥ sanirghātāḥ trāsayantaḥ varūthinīm

10. But when the truthful one (Droṇa) had departed, the earth trembled. Winds blew with thunder, terrifying the army.
पपात महती चोल्का आदित्यान्निर्गतेव ह ।
दीपयन्तीव तापेन शंसन्तीव महद्भयम् ॥११॥
11. papāta mahatī colkā ādityānnirgateva ha ,
dīpayantīva tāpena śaṁsantīva mahadbhayam.
11. papāta mahatī ca ulkā ādityāt nirgatā iva ha
dīpayantī iva tāpena śaṃsantī iva mahat bhayam
11. mahatī ulkā ādityāt nirgatā iva ha tāpena

11. A massive meteor fell, as if it had emerged from the sun, illuminating everything with its heat and appearing to foretell a great terror.
जज्वलुश्चैव शस्त्राणि भारद्वाजस्य मारिष ।
रथाः स्वनन्ति चात्यर्थं हयाश्चाश्रूण्यवासृजन् ॥१२॥
12. jajvaluścaiva śastrāṇi bhāradvājasya māriṣa ,
rathāḥ svananti cātyarthaṁ hayāścāśrūṇyavāsṛjan.
12. jajvaluḥ ca eva śastrāṇi bhāradvājasya māriṣa rathāḥ
svananti ca atyartham hayāḥ ca aśrūṇi avāsṛjan
12. māriṣa bhāradvājasya śastrāṇi ca eva jajvaluḥ rathāḥ

12. And the weapons of Droṇa, O venerable one, blazed brightly. The chariots roared exceedingly loudly, and the horses shed tears.
हतौजा इव चाप्यासीद्भारद्वाजो महारथः ।
ऋषीणां ब्रह्मवादानां स्वर्गस्य गमनं प्रति ।
सुयुद्धेन ततः प्राणानुत्स्रष्टुमुपचक्रमे ॥१३॥
13. hataujā iva cāpyāsīdbhāradvājo mahārathaḥ ,
ṛṣīṇāṁ brahmavādānāṁ svargasya gamanaṁ prati ,
suyuddhena tataḥ prāṇānutsraṣṭumupacakrame.
13. hataujaḥ iva ca api āsīt bhāradvājaḥ
mahārathaḥ ṛṣīṇām brahmavādānām
svargasya gamanam prati suyuddhena
tataḥ prāṇān utsraṣṭum upacakrame
13. bhāradvājaḥ mahārathaḥ ca api hataujaḥ

13. The great chariot-warrior Droṇa appeared as if his vigor had been taken away. Then, inspired by the sacred pronouncements (brahmavāda) of the sages regarding the journey to heaven, he began to abandon his life through excellent combat.
ततश्चतुर्दिशं सैन्यैर्द्रुपदस्याभिसंवृतः ।
निर्दहन्क्षत्रियव्रातान्द्रोणः पर्यचरद्रणे ॥१४॥
14. tataścaturdiśaṁ sainyairdrupadasyābhisaṁvṛtaḥ ,
nirdahankṣatriyavrātāndroṇaḥ paryacaradraṇe.
14. tataḥ caturdiśam sainyaiḥ drupadasya abhisaṃvṛtaḥ
nirdahan kṣatriyavrātān droṇaḥ paryacarat raṇe
14. tataḥ droṇaḥ drupadasya sainyaiḥ caturdiśam
abhisaṃvṛtaḥ kṣatriyavrātān nirdahan raṇe paryacarat
14. Then, Droṇa, surrounded on all four sides by the armies of Drupada, moved about in battle, consuming the multitudes of Kṣatriyas.
हत्वा विंशतिसाहस्रान्क्षत्रियानरिमर्दनः ।
दशायुतानि तीक्ष्णाग्रैरवधीद्विशिखैः शितैः ॥१५॥
15. hatvā viṁśatisāhasrānkṣatriyānarimardanaḥ ,
daśāyutāni tīkṣṇāgrairavadhīdviśikhaiḥ śitaiḥ.
15. hatvā viṃśatisāhasrān kṣatriyān arimardanaḥ
daśāyutāni tīkṣṇāgraiḥ avadhīt viśikhaiḥ śitaiḥ
15. arimardanaḥ viṃśatisāhasrān kṣatriyān hatvā
tīkṣṇāgraiḥ śitaiḥ viśikhaiḥ daśāyutāni avadhīt
15. The suppressor of enemies, having killed twenty thousand kṣatriyas, struck down one hundred thousand [more] with his sharp-pointed, sharpened arrows.
सोऽतिष्ठदाहवे यत्तो विधूम इव पावकः ।
क्षत्रियाणामभावाय ब्राह्ममात्मानमास्थितः ॥१६॥
16. so'tiṣṭhadāhave yatto vidhūma iva pāvakaḥ ,
kṣatriyāṇāmabhāvāya brāhmamātmānamāsthitaḥ.
16. saḥ atiṣṭhat āhave yattaḥ vidhūmaḥ iva pāvakaḥ
kṣatriyāṇām abhāvāya brāhmam ātmānam āsthitaḥ
16. saḥ yattaḥ vidhūmaḥ iva pāvakaḥ kṣatriyāṇām
abhāvāya brāhmam ātmānam āsthitaḥ āhave atiṣṭhat
16. He stood firm in battle, intensely focused, like a smokeless fire, having assumed his divine (brahmam) essence (ātman) for the annihilation of the kṣatriyas.
पाञ्चाल्यं विरथं भीमो हतसर्वायुधं वशी ।
अविषण्णं महात्मानं त्वरमाणः समभ्ययात् ॥१७॥
17. pāñcālyaṁ virathaṁ bhīmo hatasarvāyudhaṁ vaśī ,
aviṣaṇṇaṁ mahātmānaṁ tvaramāṇaḥ samabhyayāt.
17. pāñcālyam viratham bhīmaḥ hatasarvāyudham vaśī
aviṣaṇṇam mahātmānam tvaramāṇaḥ samabhyayāt
17. vaśī bhīmaḥ tvaramāṇaḥ viratham hatasarvāyudham
aviṣaṇṇam mahātmānam pāñcālyam samabhyayāt
17. The self-controlled Bhīma, hurrying, approached the great-souled Pañcāla prince, who was dismounted, had lost all his weapons, and yet remained undismayed.
ततः स्वरथमारोप्य पाञ्चाल्यमरिमर्दनः ।
अब्रवीदभिसंप्रेक्ष्य द्रोणमस्यन्तमन्तिकात् ॥१८॥
18. tataḥ svarathamāropya pāñcālyamarimardanaḥ ,
abravīdabhisaṁprekṣya droṇamasyantamantikāt.
18. tataḥ svaratham āropya pāñcālyam arimardanaḥ
abravīt abhisaṃprekṣya droṇam asyantam antikāt
18. tataḥ arimardanaḥ svaratham pāñcālyam āropya
antikāt asyantam droṇam abhisaṃprekṣya abravīt
18. Then the suppressor of enemies, after seating the Pañcāla prince in his own chariot, spoke, having observed Droṇa shooting from nearby.
न त्वदन्य इहाचार्यं योद्धुमुत्सहते पुमान् ।
त्वरस्व प्राग्वधायैव त्वयि भारः समाहितः ॥१९॥
19. na tvadanya ihācāryaṁ yoddhumutsahate pumān ,
tvarasva prāgvadhāyaiva tvayi bhāraḥ samāhitaḥ.
19. na tvat anyaḥ iha ācāryam yoddhum utsahate pumān
tvarasva prāg vadhāya eva tvayi bhāraḥ samāhitaḥ
19. iha tvat anyaḥ pumān ācāryam yoddhum na utsahate
tvarasva prāg vadhāya eva tvayi bhāraḥ samāhitaḥ
19. No man here other than you dares to fight the preceptor. Therefore, hasten for the immediate slaying; the burden is entirely entrusted to you.
स तथोक्तो महाबाहुः सर्वभारसहं नवम् ।
अभिपत्याददे क्षिप्रमायुधप्रवरं दृढम् ॥२०॥
20. sa tathokto mahābāhuḥ sarvabhārasahaṁ navam ,
abhipatyādade kṣipramāyudhapravaraṁ dṛḍham.
20. saḥ tathā uktaḥ mahābāhuḥ sarvabhārasaham navam
abhipatya ādadhe kṣipram āyudhapravaram dṛḍham
20. saḥ tathā uktaḥ mahābāhuḥ abhipatya kṣipram
sarvabhārasaham navam dṛḍham āyudhapravaram ādadhe
20. That mighty-armed (mahābāhu) one, thus addressed, quickly approached and took up a new, strong, and excellent weapon, capable of bearing all burdens.
संरब्धश्च शरानस्यन्द्रोणं दुर्वारणं रणे ।
विवारयिषुराचार्यं शरवर्षैरवाकिरत् ॥२१॥
21. saṁrabdhaśca śarānasyandroṇaṁ durvāraṇaṁ raṇe ,
vivārayiṣurācāryaṁ śaravarṣairavākirat.
21. saṃrabdhaḥ ca śarān asyan droṇam durvāraṇam
raṇe vivārayiṣuḥ ācāryam śaravarṣaiḥ avākirat
21. saḥ ca saṃrabdhaḥ vivārayiṣuḥ ācāryam raṇe
durvāraṇam droṇam śarān asyan śaravarṣaiḥ avākirat
21. And enraged, desiring to check the preceptor, he showered Drona, who was difficult to repel in battle, with volleys of arrows, continuously shooting them.
तौ न्यवारयतां श्रेष्ठौ संरब्धौ रणशोभिनौ ।
उदीरयेतां ब्राह्माणि दिव्यान्यस्त्राण्यनेकशः ॥२२॥
22. tau nyavārayatāṁ śreṣṭhau saṁrabdhau raṇaśobhinau ,
udīrayetāṁ brāhmāṇi divyānyastrāṇyanekaśaḥ.
22. tau ni-avārayatām śreṣṭhau saṃrabdhau raṇaśobhinau
ut-īrayetām brāhmāṇi divyāni astrāṇi anekaśaḥ
22. tau śreṣṭhau saṃrabdhau raṇaśobhinau ni-avārayatām
brāhmāṇi divyāni astrāṇi anekaśaḥ ut-īrayetām
22. Those two, excellent, enraged, and glorious in battle, checked each other, and repeatedly discharged many divine Brahmanical (brāhmaṇa) weapons (astra).
स महास्त्रैर्महाराज द्रोणमाच्छादयद्रणे ।
निहत्य सर्वाण्यस्त्राणि भारद्वाजस्य पार्षतः ॥२३॥
23. sa mahāstrairmahārāja droṇamācchādayadraṇe ,
nihatya sarvāṇyastrāṇi bhāradvājasya pārṣataḥ.
23. saḥ mahāstraiḥ mahārāja droṇam ācchādayat raṇe
nihatya sarvāṇi astrāṇi bhāradvājasya pārṣataḥ
23. mahārāja pārṣataḥ saḥ raṇe mahāstraiḥ droṇam ācchādayat,
bhāradvājasya sarvāṇi astrāṇi nihatya
23. O great king, Dhṛṣṭadyumna, the son of Pṛṣata, covered Drona in battle with mighty missiles, having first neutralized all of Bharadvaja's (Drona's) weapons.
स वसातीञ्शिबींश्चैव बाह्लीकान्कौरवानपि ।
रक्षिष्यमाणान्संग्रामे द्रोणं व्यधमदच्युतः ॥२४॥
24. sa vasātīñśibīṁścaiva bāhlīkānkauravānapi ,
rakṣiṣyamāṇānsaṁgrāme droṇaṁ vyadhamadacyutaḥ.
24. saḥ vasātīn śibīn ca eva bāhlīkān kauravān api
rakṣiṣyamāṇān saṅgrāme droṇam vyadhamat acyutaḥ
24. saḥ acyutaḥ saṅgrāme droṇam rakṣiṣyamāṇān vasātīn
ca eva śibīn bāhlīkān api kauravān vyadhamat
24. The unfailing (acyuta) Dhṛṣṭadyumna scattered in battle the Vasatis, the Shibis, the Bahlikas, and the Kauravas, who were attempting to protect Drona.
धृष्टद्युम्नस्तदा राजन्गभस्तिभिरिवांशुमान् ।
बभौ प्रच्छादयन्नाशाः शरजालैः समन्ततः ॥२५॥
25. dhṛṣṭadyumnastadā rājangabhastibhirivāṁśumān ,
babhau pracchādayannāśāḥ śarajālaiḥ samantataḥ.
25. dhṛṣṭadyumnaḥ tadā rājan gabhastibhiḥ iva aṃśumān
babhau pracchādayan āśāḥ śarajālaiḥ samantataḥ
25. rājan tadā dhṛṣṭadyumnaḥ gabhastibhiḥ iva aṃśumān babhau,
śarajālaiḥ samantataḥ āśāḥ pracchādayan
25. O King, then Dhṛṣṭadyumna, radiant like the sun with its rays, shone brightly, covering all directions completely with his network of arrows.
तस्य द्रोणो धनुश्छित्त्वा विद्ध्वा चैनं शिलीमुखैः ।
मर्माण्यभ्यहनद्भूयः स व्यथां परमामगात् ॥२६॥
26. tasya droṇo dhanuśchittvā viddhvā cainaṁ śilīmukhaiḥ ,
marmāṇyabhyahanadbhūyaḥ sa vyathāṁ paramāmagāt.
26. tasya droṇaḥ dhanuḥ chittvā viddhvā ca enam śilīmukhaiḥ
marmāṇi abhyahanat bhūyaḥ saḥ vyathām paramām agāt
26. droṇaḥ tasya dhanuḥ chittvā ca enam śilīmukhaiḥ viddhvā bhūyaḥ marmāṇi abhyahanat.

26. Drona, having broken his (Dhṛṣṭadyumna's) bow and pierced him with arrows, then struck his vital parts again. As a result, Dhṛṣṭadyumna experienced supreme pain.
ततो भीमो दृढक्रोधो द्रोणस्याश्लिष्य तं रथम् ।
शनकैरिव राजेन्द्र द्रोणं वचनमब्रवीत् ॥२७॥
27. tato bhīmo dṛḍhakrodho droṇasyāśliṣya taṁ ratham ,
śanakairiva rājendra droṇaṁ vacanamabravīt.
27. tataḥ bhīmaḥ dṛḍhakrodhaḥ droṇasya āśliṣya tam
ratham śanakaiḥ iva rājendra droṇam vacanam abravīt
27. rājendra tataḥ dṛḍhakrodhaḥ bhīmaḥ droṇasya tam
ratham āśliṣya śanakaiḥ iva droṇam vacanam abravīt
27. Then Bhima, filled with resolute anger, embraced Drona's chariot and, O king of kings, spoke these words to Drona as if hesitatingly.
यदि नाम न युध्येरञ्शिक्षिता ब्रह्मबन्धवः ।
स्वकर्मभिरसंतुष्टा न स्म क्षत्रं क्षयं व्रजेत् ॥२८॥
28. yadi nāma na yudhyerañśikṣitā brahmabandhavaḥ ,
svakarmabhirasaṁtuṣṭā na sma kṣatraṁ kṣayaṁ vrajet.
28. yadi nāma na yudhyeran śikṣitāḥ brahmabandhavaḥ
svakarmabhiḥ asantuṣṭāḥ na sma kṣatram kṣayam vrajet
28. yadi nāma śikṣitāḥ svakarmabhiḥ asantuṣṭāḥ brahmabandhavaḥ na yudhyeran,
na sma kṣatram kṣayam vrajet
28. If, indeed, these pseudo-brahmins (brahmabandhavaḥ), who are educated but dissatisfied with their own specific duties (svakarma), were not to fight, then the warrior class (kṣatra) would not go to destruction.
अहिंसा सर्वभूतेषु धर्मं ज्यायस्तरं विदुः ।
तस्य च ब्राह्मणो मूलं भवांश्च ब्रह्मवित्तमः ॥२९॥
29. ahiṁsā sarvabhūteṣu dharmaṁ jyāyastaraṁ viduḥ ,
tasya ca brāhmaṇo mūlaṁ bhavāṁśca brahmavittamaḥ.

29. People consider non-violence (ahiṃsā) towards all beings to be a superior natural law (dharma). Moreover, a Brahmin is the very foundation of that (dharma), and you, sir, are the foremost among those who know brahman.
श्वपाकवन्म्लेच्छगणान्हत्वा चान्यान्पृथग्विधान् ।
अज्ञानान्मूढवद्ब्रह्मन्पुत्रदारधनेप्सया ॥३०॥
30. śvapākavanmlecchagaṇānhatvā cānyānpṛthagvidhān ,
ajñānānmūḍhavadbrahmanputradāradhanepsayā.
30. śvapākavat mlecchagaṇān hatvā ca anyān pṛthagvidhān

30. O Brahmin, acting like an ignorant fool and driven by the desire for sons, wives, and wealth, you have killed various groups of barbarians and others, just like a dog-eater would.
एकस्यार्थे बहून्हत्वा पुत्रस्याधर्मविद्यथा ।
स्वकर्मस्थान्विकर्मस्थो न व्यपत्रपसे कथम् ॥३१॥
31. ekasyārthe bahūnhatvā putrasyādharmavidyathā ,
svakarmasthānvikarmastho na vyapatrapase katham.

svakarmasthān vikarmasthaḥ na vyapatrapase katham

31. How is it that you, who know unrighteousness (adharma) and are engaged in improper actions (vikarma), are not ashamed after killing many who were dedicated to their own proper duties (dharma) for the sake of one son?
स चाद्य पतितः शेते पृष्टेनावेदितस्तव ।
धर्मराजेन तद्वाक्यं नातिशङ्कितुमर्हसि ॥३२॥
32. sa cādya patitaḥ śete pṛṣṭenāveditastava ,
dharmarājena tadvākyaṁ nātiśaṅkitumarhasi.
32. saḥ ca adya patitaḥ śete pṛṣṭena āveditaḥ tava
dharmarājena tat vākyam na atiśaṅkitum arhasi
32. saḥ ca adya patitaḥ śete.
dharmarājena pṛṣṭena tava āveditaḥ tat vākyam na atiśaṅkitum arhasi.
32. And he lies fallen today, reported to you by the king of righteousness (dharma-rāja). You ought not to greatly doubt that statement.
एवमुक्तस्ततो द्रोणो भीमेनोत्सृज्य तद्धनुः ।
सर्वाण्यस्त्राणि धर्मात्मा हातुकामोऽभ्यभाषत ।
कर्ण कर्ण महेष्वास कृप दुर्योधनेति च ॥३३॥
33. evamuktastato droṇo bhīmenotsṛjya taddhanuḥ ,
sarvāṇyastrāṇi dharmātmā hātukāmo'bhyabhāṣata ,
karṇa karṇa maheṣvāsa kṛpa duryodhaneti ca.
33. evam uktaḥ tataḥ droṇaḥ bhīmena utsṛjya
tat dhanuḥ sarvāṇi astrāṇi dharmātmā
hātukāmaḥ abhyabhāṣata karṇa
karṇa maheṣvāsa kṛpa duryodhana iti ca
33. bhīmena evam uktaḥ,
tataḥ dharmātmā droṇaḥ tat dhanuḥ utsṛjya,
sarvāṇi astrāṇi hātukāmaḥ,
abhyabhāṣata: "karṇa,
karṇa,
maheṣvāsa,
kṛpa,
ca duryodhana iti.
"
33. Having been addressed thus by Bhīma, then Droṇa, whose soul was righteous (dharma-ātman), abandoning that bow and wishing to cast aside all weapons, spoke: 'Karṇa! Karṇa! Great bowman! Kṛpa! And Duryodhana!'
संग्रामे क्रियतां यत्नो ब्रवीम्येष पुनः पुनः ।
पाण्डवेभ्यः शिवं वोऽस्तु शस्त्रमभ्युत्सृजाम्यहम् ॥३४॥
34. saṁgrāme kriyatāṁ yatno bravīmyeṣa punaḥ punaḥ ,
pāṇḍavebhyaḥ śivaṁ vo'stu śastramabhyutsṛjāmyaham.
34. saṅgrāme kriyatām yatnaḥ bravīmi eṣa punaḥ punaḥ
pāṇḍavebhyaḥ śivam vaḥ astu śastram abhyutsṛjāmi aham

34. Let an effort be made in battle; I repeatedly say this. May there be welfare (śivam) for you concerning the Pāṇḍavas! I am abandoning my weapon.
इति तत्र महाराज प्राक्रोशद्द्रौणिमेव च ।
उत्सृज्य च रणे शस्त्रं रथोपस्थे निवेश्य च ।
अभयं सर्वभूतानां प्रददौ योगयुक्तवान् ॥३५॥
35. iti tatra mahārāja prākrośaddrauṇimeva ca ,
utsṛjya ca raṇe śastraṁ rathopasthe niveśya ca ,
abhayaṁ sarvabhūtānāṁ pradadau yogayuktavān.

35. Thus, there, O great king, he (Droṇa) cried out to Droṇi (Aśvatthāman). And abandoning his weapon on the battlefield and sitting down on the chariot seat, he granted freedom from fear (abhayam) to all beings, having engaged in deep spiritual practice (yoga).
तस्य तच्छिद्रमाज्ञाय धृष्टद्युम्नः समुत्थितः ।
खड्गी रथादवप्लुत्य सहसा द्रोणमभ्ययात् ॥३६॥
36. tasya tacchidramājñāya dhṛṣṭadyumnaḥ samutthitaḥ ,
khaḍgī rathādavaplutya sahasā droṇamabhyayāt.

36. Recognizing that vulnerability (chidra) of his (Droṇa's), Dhṛṣṭadyumna stood up. With sword in hand, having jumped down from the chariot, he suddenly rushed towards Droṇa.
हाहाकृतानि भूतानि मानुषाणीतराणि च ।
द्रोणं तथागतं दृष्ट्वा धृष्टद्युम्नवशं गतम् ॥३७॥
37. hāhākṛtāni bhūtāni mānuṣāṇītarāṇi ca ,
droṇaṁ tathāgataṁ dṛṣṭvā dhṛṣṭadyumnavaśaṁ gatam.
37. hāhākṛtāni bhūtāni mānuṣāṇi itarāṇi ca droṇam
tathā āgatam dṛṣṭvā dhṛṣṭadyumna-vaśam gatam
37. mānuṣāṇi itarāṇi ca bhūtāni dhṛṣṭadyumna-vaśam gatam
tathā āgatam droṇam dṛṣṭvā hāhākṛtāni [babhūvuḥ]
37. The beings, both human and others (non-human), cried out in distress (hāhākṛtāni), seeing Droṇa in that state, having fallen under the power of Dhṛṣṭadyumna.
हाहाकारं भृशं चक्रुरहो धिगिति चाब्रुवन् ।
द्रोणोऽपि शस्त्राण्युत्सृज्य परमं साम्यमास्थितः ॥३८॥
38. hāhākāraṁ bhṛśaṁ cakruraho dhigiti cābruvan ,
droṇo'pi śastrāṇyutsṛjya paramaṁ sāmyamāsthitaḥ.
38. hāhākāram bhṛśam cakruḥ aho dhik iti ca abruvan
droṇaḥ api śastrāṇi utsṛjya paramam sāmyam āsthitaḥ
38. [sarvabhūtāni] bhṛśam hāhākāram cakruḥ ca aho dhik iti
abruvan api droṇaḥ śastrāṇi utsṛjya paramam sāmyam āsthitaḥ
38. They loudly cried out in lamentation (hāhākāram) and exclaimed, 'Alas! Shame!' But Droṇa, having abandoned his weapons, had attained supreme equanimity.
तथोक्त्वा योगमास्थाय ज्योतिर्भूतो महातपाः ।
दिवमाक्रामदाचार्यः सद्भिः सह दुराक्रमम् ॥३९॥
39. tathoktvā yogamāsthāya jyotirbhūto mahātapāḥ ,
divamākrāmadācāryaḥ sadbhiḥ saha durākramam.
39. tathā uktvā yogam āsthāya jyotiḥ bhūtaḥ mahātapāḥ
divam ākramat ācāryaḥ sadbhiḥ saha durākramam
39. Having spoken thus, the great ascetic (tapas) teacher, having established himself in (yoga) and become a luminous being, ascended to the heavens, a realm difficult to reach even for the virtuous ones.
द्वौ सूर्याविति नो बुद्धिरासीत्तस्मिंस्तथा गते ।
एकाग्रमिव चासीद्धि ज्योतिर्भिः पूरितं नभः ।
समपद्यत चार्काभे भारद्वाजनिशाकरे ॥४०॥
40. dvau sūryāviti no buddhirāsīttasmiṁstathā gate ,
ekāgramiva cāsīddhi jyotirbhiḥ pūritaṁ nabhaḥ ,
samapadyata cārkābhe bhāradvājaniśākare.
40. dvau sūryau iti naḥ buddhiḥ āsīt
tasmin tathā gate ekāgram iva ca āsīt
hi jyotibhiḥ pūritam nabhaḥ samapadyata
ca arkābhe bhāradvājanīśākare
40. "There are two suns!" - such was our understanding (buddhi) when he had departed in that manner. The sky, filled with luminous beings, was indeed as if a single concentrated mass of light. And the son of Bharadvāja (Drona) became radiant like the sun and the moon.
निमेषमात्रेण च तज्ज्योतिरन्तरधीयत ।
आसीत्किलकिलाशब्दः प्रहृष्टानां दिवौकसाम् ।
ब्रह्मलोकं गते द्रोणे धृष्टद्युम्ने च मोहिते ॥४१॥
41. nimeṣamātreṇa ca tajjyotirantaradhīyata ,
āsītkilakilāśabdaḥ prahṛṣṭānāṁ divaukasām ,
brahmalokaṁ gate droṇe dhṛṣṭadyumne ca mohite.
41. nimeṣamātreṇa ca tat jyotiḥ
antaradhīyata āsīt kilakilāśabdaḥ
prahṛṣṭānām divaukasām brahmalokam
gate droṇe dhṛṣṭadyumne ca mohite
41. And in just a moment, that light vanished. There was a joyous clamor from the delighted celestials, as Drona had gone to the world of (brahman), and Dhṛṣṭadyumna was left bewildered.
वयमेव तदाद्राक्ष्म पञ्च मानुषयोनयः ।
योगयुक्तं महात्मानं गच्छन्तं परमां गतिम् ॥४२॥
42. vayameva tadādrākṣma pañca mānuṣayonayaḥ ,
yogayuktaṁ mahātmānaṁ gacchantaṁ paramāṁ gatim.
42. vayam eva tadā adrākṣma pañca mānuṣayonayaḥ
yogayuktam mahātmānam gacchantam paramām gatim
42. We five, who are of human origin, were the only ones who then witnessed the great-souled one, fully absorbed in (yoga), ascending to the supreme state.
अहं धनंजयः पार्थः कृपः शारद्वतो द्विजः ।
वासुदेवश्च वार्ष्णेयो धर्मराजश्च पाण्डवः ॥४३॥
43. ahaṁ dhanaṁjayaḥ pārthaḥ kṛpaḥ śāradvato dvijaḥ ,
vāsudevaśca vārṣṇeyo dharmarājaśca pāṇḍavaḥ.
43. aham dhanaṃjayaḥ pārthaḥ kṛpaḥ śāradvataḥ dvijaḥ
vāsudevaḥ ca vārṣṇeyaḥ dharmarājaḥ ca pāṇḍavaḥ

43. I am Dhananjaya (Arjuna), Partha. Also Kripa, the twice-born (dvija) son of Sharadvat. And Vasudeva (Krishna), the son of Vrishni, and Dharmaraja (Yudhishthira), the son of Pandu.
अन्ये तु सर्वे नापश्यन्भारद्वाजस्य धीमतः ।
महिमानं महाराज योगयुक्तस्य गच्छतः ॥४४॥
44. anye tu sarve nāpaśyanbhāradvājasya dhīmataḥ ,
mahimānaṁ mahārāja yogayuktasya gacchataḥ.
44. anye tu sarve na apaśyan bhāradvājasya dhīmataḥ
mahimānam mahārāja yogayuktasya gacchataḥ
44. mahārāja anye tu sarve bhāradvājasya dhīmataḥ

44. However, O great king (mahārāja), all the others did not perceive the greatness of the wise son of Bharadvaja (Drona), who was departing, fully absorbed in (dhyāna) yoga.
गतिं परमिकां प्राप्तमजानन्तो नृयोनयः ।
नापश्यन्गच्छमानं हि तं सार्धमृषिपुंगवैः ।
आचार्यं योगमास्थाय ब्रह्मलोकमरिंदमम् ॥४५॥
45. gatiṁ paramikāṁ prāptamajānanto nṛyonayaḥ ,
nāpaśyangacchamānaṁ hi taṁ sārdhamṛṣipuṁgavaiḥ ,
ācāryaṁ yogamāsthāya brahmalokamariṁdamam.
45. gatim paramikām prāptam ajānantaḥ
nṛyonayaḥ na apaśyan gacchamānam hi
tam sārdham ṛṣipuṃgavaiḥ ācāryam
yogam āsthāya brahmalokam ariṃdamam
45. ariṃdamam nṛyonayaḥ ajānantaḥ ācāryam
hi tam gacchamānam gatim paramikām
prāptam yogam āsthāya ṛṣipuṃgavaiḥ
sārdham brahmalokam na apaśyan
45. O subduer of enemies (ariṃdama), human beings (nṛyonayaḥ), being unaware, did not see the teacher (ācārya) departing. He had attained the supreme state and, having resorted to (dhyāna) yoga, was proceeding to the world of Brahman (brahmaloka) accompanied by the chief of sages.
वितुन्नाङ्गं शरशतैर्न्यस्तायुधमसृक्क्षरम् ।
धिक्कृतः पार्षतस्तं तु सर्वभूतैः परामृशत् ॥४६॥
46. vitunnāṅgaṁ śaraśatairnyastāyudhamasṛkkṣaram ,
dhikkṛtaḥ pārṣatastaṁ tu sarvabhūtaiḥ parāmṛśat.
46. vitunnāṅgam śaraśataiḥ nyastāyudham asṛkkṣaram
dhikkṛtaḥ pārṣataḥ tam tu sarvabhūtaiḥ parāmṛśat
46. tu dhikkṛtaḥ pārṣataḥ sarvabhūtaiḥ vitunnāṅgam
śaraśataiḥ nyastāyudham asṛkkṣaram tam parāmṛśat
46. But Dhrishtadyumna (Pārṣataḥ), scorned by all beings, assaulted him (Drona), whose limbs were pierced by hundreds of arrows, whose weapons had been cast aside, and from whom blood flowed.
तस्य मूर्धानमालम्ब्य गतसत्त्वस्य देहिनः ।
किंचिदब्रुवतः कायाद्विचकर्तासिना शिरः ॥४७॥
47. tasya mūrdhānamālambya gatasattvasya dehinaḥ ,
kiṁcidabruvataḥ kāyādvicakartāsinā śiraḥ.

dehinaḥ kiñcit abruvataḥ kāyāt asinā śiraḥ

47. He seized the head of that embodied being, who was bereft of life-force (sattva) and saying nothing, and with a sword, he severed the head from the body.
हर्षेण महता युक्तो भारद्वाजे निपातिते ।
सिंहनादरवं चक्रे भ्रामयन्खड्गमाहवे ॥४८॥
48. harṣeṇa mahatā yukto bhāradvāje nipātite ,
siṁhanādaravaṁ cakre bhrāmayankhaḍgamāhave.

48. Filled with great joy at the slaying of Bhāradvāja (Droṇa), he let out a lion's roar, brandishing his sword in battle.
आकर्णपलितः श्यामो वयसाशीतिपञ्चकः ।
त्वत्कृते व्यचरत्संख्ये स तु षोडशवर्षवत् ॥४९॥
49. ākarṇapalitaḥ śyāmo vayasāśītipañcakaḥ ,
tvatkṛte vyacaratsaṁkhye sa tu ṣoḍaśavarṣavat.
49. ākarṇapalitaḥ śyāmaḥ vayasā aśītipañcakaḥ
tvatkṛte vyacarat saṃkhye saḥ tu ṣoḍaśavarṣavat
49. ākarṇapalitaḥ śyāmaḥ aśītipañcakaḥ vayasā saḥ

49. His hair was grey up to his ears, he was dark-complexioned, and eighty-five years of age. But for your sake, he moved about in battle as if he were sixteen years old.
उक्तवांश्च महाबाहुः कुन्तीपुत्रो धनंजयः ।
जीवन्तमानयाचार्यं मा वधीर्द्रुपदात्मज ॥५०॥
50. uktavāṁśca mahābāhuḥ kuntīputro dhanaṁjayaḥ ,
jīvantamānayācāryaṁ mā vadhīrdrupadātmaja.
50. uktavān ca mahābāhuḥ kuntīputraḥ dhanañjayaḥ
jīvantam ānaya ācāryam mā vadhīḥ drupdātmaja

50. And Dhanañjaya (Arjuna), the mighty-armed son of Kuntī, said, "O son of Drupada, bring the teacher (ācārya) alive! Do not kill him!"
न हन्तव्यो न हन्तव्य इति ते सैनिकाश्च ह ।
उत्क्रोशन्नर्जुनश्चैव सानुक्रोशस्तमाद्रवत् ॥५१॥
51. na hantavyo na hantavya iti te sainikāśca ha ,
utkrośannarjunaścaiva sānukrośastamādravat.

utkrośan arjunaḥ ca eva sānukrośaḥ tam ādravat

51. "Do not kill! Do not kill!" shouted his soldiers, and Arjuna, full of compassion, rushed towards him, crying out.
क्रोशमानेऽर्जुने चैव पार्थिवेषु च सर्वशः ।
धृष्टद्युम्नोऽवधीद्द्रोणं रथतल्पे नरर्षभम् ॥५२॥
52. krośamāne'rjune caiva pārthiveṣu ca sarvaśaḥ ,
dhṛṣṭadyumno'vadhīddroṇaṁ rathatalpe nararṣabham.
52. krośamāne arjune ca eva pārthiveṣu ca sarvaśaḥ
dhṛṣṭadyumnaḥ avadhīt droṇam rathatalpe nararṣabham

52. Even as Arjuna cried out and all the kings were present, Dhṛṣṭadyumna killed Droṇa, the best among men, on his chariot-bed.
शोणितेन परिक्लिन्नो रथाद्भूमिमरिंदमः ।
लोहिताङ्ग इवादित्यो दुर्दर्शः समपद्यत ।
एवं तं निहतं संख्ये ददृशे सैनिको जनः ॥५३॥
53. śoṇitena pariklinno rathādbhūmimariṁdamaḥ ,
lohitāṅga ivādityo durdarśaḥ samapadyata ,
evaṁ taṁ nihataṁ saṁkhye dadṛśe sainiko janaḥ.

53. Soaked in blood, the subduer of foes (ariṃdamaḥ) fell from his chariot to the ground. Like the red-limbed sun, he became difficult to behold. Thus, the soldiers saw him slain in battle (saṃkhye).
धृष्टद्युम्नस्तु तद्राजन्भारद्वाजशिरो महत् ।
तावकानां महेष्वासः प्रमुखे तत्समाक्षिपत् ॥५४॥
54. dhṛṣṭadyumnastu tadrājanbhāradvājaśiro mahat ,
tāvakānāṁ maheṣvāsaḥ pramukhe tatsamākṣipat.

54. But Dhṛṣṭadyumna, O King, the great archer, threw that mighty head of Bhāradvāja (Droṇa) in front of your warriors.
ते तु दृष्ट्वा शिरो राजन्भारद्वाजस्य तावकाः ।
पलायनकृतोत्साहा दुद्रुवुः सर्वतोदिशम् ॥५५॥
55. te tu dṛṣṭvā śiro rājanbhāradvājasya tāvakāḥ ,
palāyanakṛtotsāhā dudruvuḥ sarvatodiśam.
55. te tu dṛṣṭvā śiraḥ rājan bhāradvājasya tāvakāḥ
palāyanakṛtotsāhāḥ dudruvuḥ sarvataḥ diśam

55. But your warriors, O king, upon seeing the head of Bhāradvāja (Droṇa), became eager to flee and dispersed in all directions.
द्रोणस्तु दिवमास्थाय नक्षत्रपथमाविशत् ।
अहमेव तदाद्राक्षं द्रोणस्य निधनं नृप ॥५६॥
56. droṇastu divamāsthāya nakṣatrapathamāviśat ,
ahameva tadādrākṣaṁ droṇasya nidhanaṁ nṛpa.

56. But Droṇa, ascending to the heavens, entered the path of the stars. O king, I myself then witnessed Droṇa's demise.
ऋषेः प्रसादात्कृष्णस्य सत्यवत्याः सुतस्य च ।
विधूमामिव संयान्तीमुल्कां प्रज्वलितामिव ।
अपश्याम दिवं स्तब्ध्वा गच्छन्तं तं महाद्युतिम् ॥५७॥
57. ṛṣeḥ prasādātkṛṣṇasya satyavatyāḥ sutasya ca ,
vidhūmāmiva saṁyāntīmulkāṁ prajvalitāmiva ,
apaśyāma divaṁ stabdhvā gacchantaṁ taṁ mahādyutim.

57. By the grace of the sage Kṛṣṇa (Vyāsa), the son of Satyavatī, we saw that greatly luminous one (Droṇa) moving steadily towards the heavens, like a smokeless, intensely blazing meteor.
हते द्रोणे निरुत्साहान्कुरून्पाण्डवसृञ्जयाः ।
अभ्यद्रवन्महावेगास्ततः सैन्यं व्यदीर्यत ॥५८॥

58. When Droṇa was slain, the Pāṇḍavas and Sṛñjayas, with great speed, attacked the disheartened Kauravas. Consequently, the (Kaurava) army was scattered.
निहता हयभूयिष्ठाः संग्रामे निशितैः शरैः ।
तावका निहते द्रोणे गतासव इवाभवन् ॥५९॥
59. nihatā hayabhūyiṣṭhāḥ saṁgrāme niśitaiḥ śaraiḥ ,
tāvakā nihate droṇe gatāsava ivābhavan.

59. When Drona was slain, your soldiers - who were predominantly horsemen killed in battle by sharp arrows - became as if lifeless.
पराजयमथावाप्य परत्र च महद्भयम् ।
उभयेनैव ते हीना नाविन्दन्धृतिमात्मनः ॥६०॥
60. parājayamathāvāpya paratra ca mahadbhayam ,
ubhayenaiva te hīnā nāvindandhṛtimātmanaḥ.

60. After suffering defeat and also facing great fear regarding the afterlife, they were indeed deprived of both [victory and future well-being], and could not find their own inner fortitude (ātman).
अन्विच्छन्तः शरीरं तु भारद्वाजस्य पार्थिवाः ।
नाध्यगच्छंस्तदा राजन्कबन्धायुतसंकुले ॥६१॥
61. anvicchantaḥ śarīraṁ tu bhāradvājasya pārthivāḥ ,
nādhyagacchaṁstadā rājankabandhāyutasaṁkule.

61. But then, O King, the princes, searching for the body of Bharadvaja [Droṇa], could not find it at that time amidst the confusion of thousands of headless torsos.

बाणशब्दरवांश्चक्रुः सिंहनादांश्च पुष्कलान् ॥६२॥
62. pāṇḍavāstu jayaṁ labdhvā paratra ca mahadyaśaḥ ,

62. But the Pandavas, having achieved victory and great fame that extended even to the afterlife, then made abundant sounds of arrow-noises and mighty lion-roars.
भीमसेनस्ततो राजन्धृष्टद्युम्नश्च पार्षतः ।
वरूथिन्यामनृत्येतां परिष्वज्य परस्परम् ॥६३॥
63. bhīmasenastato rājandhṛṣṭadyumnaśca pārṣataḥ ,

63. Then, O king, Bhimasena and Dhrishtadyumna, the son of Prishata, embraced each other and danced within the host.
अब्रवीच्च तदा भीमः पार्षतं शत्रुतापनम् ।
भूयोऽहं त्वां विजयिनं परिष्वक्ष्यामि पार्षत ।
सूतपुत्रे हते पापे धार्तराष्ट्रे च संयुगे ॥६४॥
64. abravīcca tadā bhīmaḥ pārṣataṁ śatrutāpanam ,
bhūyo'haṁ tvāṁ vijayinaṁ pariṣvakṣyāmi pārṣata ,
sūtaputre hate pāpe dhārtarāṣṭre ca saṁyuge.

64. And then Bhima spoke to Dhrishtadyumna, the tormentor of enemies: 'O son of Prishata, I will embrace you again, victorious, once that wicked son of a charioteer [Karṇa] is killed, and the sons of Dhritarashtra [are defeated] in battle.'
एतावदुक्त्वा भीमस्तु हर्षेण महता युतः ।
बाहुशब्देन पृथिवीं कम्पयामास पाण्डवः ॥६५॥
65. etāvaduktvā bhīmastu harṣeṇa mahatā yutaḥ ,
bāhuśabdena pṛthivīṁ kampayāmāsa pāṇḍavaḥ.

65. Having spoken thus, Bhima, the son of Pāṇḍu, filled with great joy, made the earth tremble with the resounding slap of his arms.
तस्य शब्देन वित्रस्ताः प्राद्रवंस्तावका युधि ।
क्षत्रधर्मं समुत्सृज्य पलायनपरायणाः ॥६६॥

66. Terrified by his sound, your people (Kauravas) fled in battle, having abandoned the constitution (dharma) of the warrior (kṣatriya) class, their sole aim being flight.

अरिक्षयं च संग्रामे तेन ते सुखमाप्नुवन् ॥६७॥
67. pāṇḍavāstu jayaṁ labdhvā hṛṣṭā hyāsanviśāṁ pate ,
arikṣayaṁ ca saṁgrāme tena te sukhamāpnuvan.

67. O lord of men, the Pāṇḍavas, having achieved victory and the annihilation of their enemies in battle, became joyful and thereby attained happiness.
ततो द्रोणे हते राजन्कुरवः शस्त्रपीडिताः ।
हतप्रवीरा विध्वस्ता भृशं शोकपरायणाः ॥६८॥
68. tato droṇe hate rājankuravaḥ śastrapīḍitāḥ ,
hatapravīrā vidhvastā bhṛśaṁ śokaparāyaṇāḥ.

68. Then, O King, after Droṇa was killed, the Kurus, afflicted by weapons, their chief warriors slain, were utterly shattered and deeply overcome by sorrow.
विचेतसो हतोत्साहाः कश्मलाभिहतौजसः ।
आर्तस्वरेण महता पुत्रं ते पर्यवारयन् ॥६९॥
69. vicetaso hatotsāhāḥ kaśmalābhihataujasaḥ ,
ārtasvareṇa mahatā putraṁ te paryavārayan.

69. Bereft of their senses, with their enthusiasm lost, and their strength weakened by confusion, they surrounded your son with a great cry of distress.
रजस्वला वेपमाना वीक्षमाणा दिशो दश ।
अश्रुकण्ठा यथा दैत्या हिरण्याक्षे पुरा हते ॥७०॥
70. rajasvalā vepamānā vīkṣamāṇā diśo daśa ,
aśrukaṇṭhā yathā daityā hiraṇyākṣe purā hate.

70. Like the demons of old, when Hiraṇyākṣa was slain, she, menstruating, trembling, and gazing in all ten directions, had her throat choked with tears.
स तैः परिवृतो राजा त्रस्तैः क्षुद्रमृगैरिव ।
अशक्नुवन्नवस्थातुमपायात्तनयस्तव ॥७१॥
71. sa taiḥ parivṛto rājā trastaiḥ kṣudramṛgairiva ,
aśaknuvannavasthātumapāyāttanayastava.

71. Your son, the king, surrounded by them like small, frightened deer, was unable to maintain his position and fled.
क्षुत्पिपासापरिश्रान्तास्ते योधास्तव भारत ।
आदित्येन च संतप्ता भृशं विमनसोऽभवन् ॥७२॥
72. kṣutpipāsāpariśrāntāste yodhāstava bhārata ,
ādityena ca saṁtaptā bhṛśaṁ vimanaso'bhavan.

72. O Bhārata, your warriors, utterly exhausted by hunger and thirst, and greatly tormented by the sun, became extremely disheartened.
भास्करस्येव पतनं समुद्रस्येव शोषणम् ।
विपर्यासं यथा मेरोर्वासवस्येव निर्जयम् ॥७३॥
73. bhāskarasyeva patanaṁ samudrasyeva śoṣaṇam ,
viparyāsaṁ yathā merorvāsavasyeva nirjayam.

73. It was like the setting of the sun, the drying up of the ocean, the overturning of Mount Meru, or the defeat of Indra (Vāsava).
अमर्षणीयं तद्दृष्ट्वा भारद्वाजस्य पातनम् ।
त्रस्तरूपतरा राजन्कौरवाः प्राद्रवन्भयात् ॥७४॥
74. amarṣaṇīyaṁ taddṛṣṭvā bhāradvājasya pātanam ,
trastarūpatarā rājankauravāḥ prādravanbhayāt.

74. O King, having witnessed that intolerable fall of Drona (Bhāradvāja), the Kauravas, appearing even more terrified, fled in fear.
गान्धारराजः शकुनिस्त्रस्तस्त्रस्ततरैः सह ।
हतं रुक्मरथं दृष्ट्वा प्राद्रवत्सहितो रथैः ॥७५॥
75. gāndhārarājaḥ śakunistrastastrastataraiḥ saha ,
hataṁ rukmarathaṁ dṛṣṭvā prādravatsahito rathaiḥ.

75. King Shakuni of Gandhara, accompanied by his extremely terrified followers, fled with his chariots upon seeing Rukmaratha slain.

परिगृह्य महासेनां सूतपुत्रोऽपयाद्भयात् ॥७६॥

76. Karna, the son of the charioteer, gathered the great army, which was swift, fleeing, and still bearing its banners, and then fled out of fear.
रथनागाश्वकलिलां पुरस्कृत्य तु वाहिनीम् ।
मद्राणामीश्वरः शल्यो वीक्षमाणोऽपयाद्भयात् ॥७७॥
77. rathanāgāśvakalilāṁ puraskṛtya tu vāhinīm ,
madrāṇāmīśvaraḥ śalyo vīkṣamāṇo'payādbhayāt.

77. Shalya, the lord of the Madras, observing the situation, put forward his army, which was crowded with chariots, elephants, and horses, and then fled out of fear.

वृतः शारद्वतोऽगच्छत्कष्टं कष्टमिति ब्रुवन् ॥७८॥

78. Sharadvata (Kripa), surrounded mostly by elephants and many foot-soldiers whose leading warriors had been killed, moved on, repeatedly lamenting, "Alas! Alas!"
भोजानीकेन शिष्टेन कलिङ्गारट्टबाह्लिकैः ।
कृतवर्मा वृतो राजन्प्रायात्सुजवनैर्हयैः ॥७९॥
79. bhojānīkena śiṣṭena kaliṅgāraṭṭabāhlikaiḥ ,
kṛtavarmā vṛto rājanprāyātsujavanairhayaiḥ.

79. O King, Kṛtavarmā, surrounded by the remaining Bhoja army, along with Kalinga, Aratta, and Bahlika warriors, advanced with his very swift horses.
पदातिगणसंयुक्तस्त्रस्तो राजन्भयार्दितः ।
उलूकः प्राद्रवत्तत्र दृष्ट्वा द्रोणं निपातितम् ॥८०॥
80. padātigaṇasaṁyuktastrasto rājanbhayārditaḥ ,
ulūkaḥ prādravattatra dṛṣṭvā droṇaṁ nipātitam.

80. O King, Ulūka, accompanied by a host of foot soldiers, terrified and afflicted by fear, fled from there, having seen Droṇa struck down.
दर्शनीयो युवा चैव शौर्ये च कृतलक्षणः ।
दुःशासनो भृशोद्विग्नः प्राद्रवद्गजसंवृतः ॥८१॥
81. darśanīyo yuvā caiva śaurye ca kṛtalakṣaṇaḥ ,
duḥśāsano bhṛśodvignaḥ prādravadgajasaṁvṛtaḥ.

81. And indeed, Duḥśāsana, who was handsome and young, and characterized by valor, fled, greatly agitated and surrounded by elephants.
गजाश्वरथसंयुक्तो वृतश्चैव पदातिभिः ।
दुर्योधनो महाराज प्रायात्तत्र महारथः ॥८२॥
82. gajāśvarathasaṁyukto vṛtaścaiva padātibhiḥ ,
duryodhano mahārāja prāyāttatra mahārathaḥ.

82. O great King, Duryodhana, the great warrior, accompanied by elephants, horses, and chariots, and indeed surrounded by foot soldiers, went there.
गजान्रथान्समारुह्य परस्यापि हयाञ्जनाः ।
प्रकीर्णकेशा विध्वस्ता न द्वावेकत्र धावतः ॥८३॥
83. gajānrathānsamāruhya parasyāpi hayāñjanāḥ ,
prakīrṇakeśā vidhvastā na dvāvekatra dhāvataḥ.

83. The soldiers, utterly routed and with disheveled hair, mounted elephants, chariots, and even the enemy's horses. Not two of them fled together to a single place, indicating their complete disarray.
नेदमस्तीति पुरुषा हतोत्साहा हतौजसः ।
उत्सृज्य कवचानन्ये प्राद्रवंस्तावका विभो ॥८४॥
84. nedamastīti puruṣā hatotsāhā hataujasaḥ ,
utsṛjya kavacānanye prādravaṁstāvakā vibho.
84. na idam asti iti puruṣāḥ hatotsāhāḥ hataujasaḥ
utsṛjya kavacān anye prādravan tāvakāḥ vibho
84. Vibho,
hatotsāhāḥ hataujasaḥ puruṣāḥ "na idam asti" iti (matvā),
kavacān utsṛjya,
anye tāvakāḥ prādravan.
84. "This is not (our victory or hope)," thought the men, who were bereft of enthusiasm and vitality. Abandoning their armors, others (your followers, O lord) fled.
अन्योन्यं ते समाक्रोशन्सैनिका भरतर्षभ ।
तिष्ठ तिष्ठेति न च ते स्वयं तत्रावतस्थिरे ॥८५॥
85. anyonyaṁ te samākrośansainikā bharatarṣabha ,
tiṣṭha tiṣṭheti na ca te svayaṁ tatrāvatasthire.

85. Bharatarṣabha,
te sainikāḥ anyonyam "tiṣṭha tiṣṭha" iti samākrośan,
ca te svayam tatra na avatasthire.
85. O best among the Bhāratas, those soldiers shouted at each other, "Stop! Stop!" Yet, they themselves did not stand firm there.
धुर्यान्प्रमुच्य तु रथाद्धतसूतान्स्वलंकृतान् ।
अधिरुह्य हयान्योधाः क्षिप्रं पद्भिरचोदयन् ॥८६॥
86. dhuryānpramucya tu rathāddhatasūtānsvalaṁkṛtān ,
adhiruhya hayānyodhāḥ kṣipraṁ padbhiracodayan.

86. Yodhāḥ tu,
hatasūtān svalaṅkṛtān dhuryān rathāt pramucya,

kṣipram padbhiḥ acodayan.
86. The warriors, having released the well-decorated draught animals from chariots whose drivers had been killed, and then having mounted horses, swiftly spurred them on with their feet.
द्रवमाणे तथा सैन्ये त्रस्तरूपे हतौजसि ।
प्रतिस्रोत इव ग्राहो द्रोणपुत्रः परानियात् ॥८७॥
87. dravamāṇe tathā sainye trastarūpe hataujasi ,
pratisrota iva grāho droṇaputraḥ parāniyāt.

87. As the army was fleeing, utterly terrified and bereft of strength, Droṇa's son attacked the enemies like a crocodile swimming against the current.
हत्वा बहुविधां सेनां पाण्डूनां युद्धदुर्मदः ।
कथंचित्संकटान्मुक्तो मत्तद्विरदविक्रमः ॥८८॥
88. hatvā bahuvidhāṁ senāṁ pāṇḍūnāṁ yuddhadurmadaḥ ,
kathaṁcitsaṁkaṭānmukto mattadviradavikramaḥ.

88. Having slaughtered a diverse host of Pāṇḍava warriors, he, fierce and unyielding in battle, somehow freed himself from danger, possessing the might of a rutting elephant.
द्रवमाणं बलं दृष्ट्वा पलायनकृतक्षणम् ।
दुर्योधनं समासाद्य द्रोणपुत्रोऽब्रवीदिदम् ॥८९॥
89. dravamāṇaṁ balaṁ dṛṣṭvā palāyanakṛtakṣaṇam ,
duryodhanaṁ samāsādya droṇaputro'bravīdidam.

89. Seeing the army fleeing, having committed itself to retreat, Droṇa's son approached Duryodhana and spoke these words.
किमियं द्रवते सेना त्रस्तरूपेव भारत ।
द्रवमाणां च राजेन्द्र नावस्थापयसे रणे ॥९०॥
90. kimiyaṁ dravate senā trastarūpeva bhārata ,
dravamāṇāṁ ca rājendra nāvasthāpayase raṇe.
90. kim iyam dravate senā trastarūpā iva bhārata
| dravamāṇām ca rājendra na avasthāpayase raṇe
90. bhārata,
iyam senā trastarūpā iva kim dravate? ca rājendra,

90. Why is this army fleeing, O Bhārata, looking utterly terrified? And why, O great king, do you not halt this retreating army in battle?
त्वं चापि न यथापूर्वं प्रकृतिस्थो नराधिप ।
कर्णप्रभृतयश्चेमे नावतिष्ठन्ति पार्थिवाः ॥९१॥
91. tvaṁ cāpi na yathāpūrvaṁ prakṛtistho narādhipa ,
karṇaprabhṛtayaśceme nāvatiṣṭhanti pārthivāḥ.
91. tvam ca api na yathāpūrvam prakṛtisthaḥ narādhipa
karṇaprabhṛtayaḥ ca ime na avatiṣṭhanti pārthivāḥ
91. narādhipa tvam ca api yathāpūrvam prakṛtisthaḥ na
asi ca ime karṇaprabhṛtayaḥ pārthivāḥ na avatiṣṭhanti
91. And you too, O king (narādhipa), are not in your natural state (prakṛtistha) as before. And these kings (pārthivāḥ), led by Karṇa, do not stand firm.
अन्येष्वपि च युद्धेषु नैव सेनाद्रवत्तदा ।
कच्चित्क्षेमं महाबाहो तव सैन्यस्य भारत ॥९२॥
92. anyeṣvapi ca yuddheṣu naiva senādravattadā ,
kaccitkṣemaṁ mahābāho tava sainyasya bhārata.
92. anyeṣu api ca yuddheṣu na eva senā adravat tadā
kaccit kṣemam mahābāho tava sainyasya bhārata
92. ca anyeṣu yuddheṣu api tadā senā na eva adravat
mahābāho bhārata kaccit tava sainyasya kṣemam
92. And in other battles (yuddheṣu) too, the army (senā) never fled then. O mighty-armed (mahābāho) Bhārata, is your army (sainyasya) safe?
कस्मिन्निदं हते राजन्रथसिंहे बलं तव ।
एतामवस्थां संप्राप्तं तन्ममाचक्ष्व कौरव ॥९३॥
93. kasminnidaṁ hate rājanrathasiṁhe balaṁ tava ,
etāmavasthāṁ saṁprāptaṁ tanmamācakṣva kaurava.
93. kasmin idam hate rājan rathasiṃhe balam tava etām
avasthām samprāptam tat mama ācakṣva kaurava
93. rājan he kaurava,
kasmin rathasiṃhe hate,
tava idam balam etām avasthām samprāptam? tat mama ācakṣva.
93. O King (rājan), with which lion-like warrior (rathasiṃhe) having been slain, has this army (balam) of yours reached this state? Tell me that, O Kuru (kaurava).
तत्तु दुर्योधनः श्रुत्वा द्रोणपुत्रस्य भाषितम् ।
घोरमप्रियमाख्यातुं नाशकत्पार्थिवर्षभः ॥९४॥
94. tattu duryodhanaḥ śrutvā droṇaputrasya bhāṣitam ,
ghoramapriyamākhyātuṁ nāśakatpārthivarṣabhaḥ.
94. tat tu duryodhanaḥ śrutvā droṇaputrasya bhāṣitam
ghoram apriyam ākhyātum na aśakat pārthivarṣabhaḥ

94. But Duryodhana, that best of kings (pārthivarṣabhaḥ), having heard the speech (bhāṣitam) of Droṇa's son, was unable to relate that terrible and unpleasant (news).
भिन्ना नौरिव ते पुत्रो निमग्नः शोकसागरे ।
बाष्पेण पिहितो दृष्ट्वा द्रोणपुत्रं रथे स्थितम् ॥९५॥
95. bhinnā nauriva te putro nimagnaḥ śokasāgare ,
bāṣpeṇa pihito dṛṣṭvā droṇaputraṁ rathe sthitam.
95. bhinnā nauḥ iva te putraḥ nimagnaḥ śoka-sāgare
bāṣpeṇa pihitaḥ dṛṣṭvā droṇa-putram rathe sthitam

95. Your son, like a broken boat, was submerged in an ocean of sorrow. His vision was veiled by tears upon seeing Drona's son standing in his chariot.
ततः शारद्वतं राजा सव्रीडमिदमब्रवीत् ।
शंसेह सर्वं भद्रं ते यथा सैन्यमिदं द्रुतम् ॥९६॥
96. tataḥ śāradvataṁ rājā savrīḍamidamabravīt ,
śaṁseha sarvaṁ bhadraṁ te yathā sainyamidaṁ drutam.
96. tataḥ śāradvatam rājā savrīḍam idam abravīt śaṃsa
iha sarvam bhadram te yathā sainyam idam drutam
96. tataḥ rājā savrīḍam idam śāradvatam abravīt te

96. Then the king, feeling embarrassed, said this to Kṛpa (Śāradvata): 'Please narrate everything here – may you be well – regarding how this army fled.'
अथ शारद्वतो राजन्नार्तिं गच्छन्पुनः पुनः ।
शशंस द्रोणपुत्राय यथा द्रोणो निपातितः ॥९७॥
97. atha śāradvato rājannārtiṁ gacchanpunaḥ punaḥ ,
śaśaṁsa droṇaputrāya yathā droṇo nipātitaḥ.

97. Then Kṛpa (Śāradvata), O king, repeatedly experiencing great distress, narrated to Drona's son (Aśvatthāmā) how Drona had been struck down.
कृप उवाच ।
वयं द्रोणं पुरस्कृत्य पृथिव्यां प्रवरं रथम् ।
प्रावर्तयाम संग्रामं पाञ्चालैरेव केवलैः ॥९८॥
98. kṛpa uvāca ,
vayaṁ droṇaṁ puraskṛtya pṛthivyāṁ pravaraṁ ratham ,
prāvartayāma saṁgrāmaṁ pāñcālaireva kevalaiḥ.

98. Kṛpa said: 'We waged war, with Drona - the foremost charioteer on earth - at our head, exclusively against the Pañcālas.'
ततः प्रवृत्ते संग्रामे विमिश्राः कुरुसोमकाः ।
अन्योन्यमभिगर्जन्तः शस्त्रैर्देहानपातयन् ॥९९॥
99. tataḥ pravṛtte saṁgrāme vimiśrāḥ kurusomakāḥ ,
anyonyamabhigarjantaḥ śastrairdehānapātayan.

99. Then, with the battle having begun, the Kurus and the Somakas (Pañcālas) were intermingled. Roaring at one another, they struck down bodies with their weapons.
ततो द्रोणो ब्राह्ममस्त्रं विकुर्वाणो नरर्षभः ।
अहनच्छात्रवान्भल्लैः शतशोऽथ सहस्रशः ॥१००॥
100. tato droṇo brāhmamastraṁ vikurvāṇo nararṣabhaḥ ,
ahanacchātravānbhallaiḥ śataśo'tha sahasraśaḥ.
100. tataḥ droṇaḥ brāhmam astram vikurvāṇaḥ nararṣabhaḥ
ahanat śātravān bhallaiḥ śataśaḥ atha sahasraśaḥ

100. Then Drona, the best of men, manifesting the divine (brahman) weapon (astra), struck down his enemies with hundreds and even thousands of darts.
पाण्डवाः केकया मत्स्याः पाञ्चालाश्च विशेषतः ।
संख्ये द्रोणरथं प्राप्य व्यनशन्कालचोदिताः ॥१०१॥
101. pāṇḍavāḥ kekayā matsyāḥ pāñcālāśca viśeṣataḥ ,
saṁkhye droṇarathaṁ prāpya vyanaśankālacoditāḥ.

101. The Pandavas, the Kekayas, the Matsyas, and especially the Pañcālas, having encountered Drona's chariot in battle, perished, driven by Time (Death).
सहस्रं रथसिंहानां द्विसाहस्रं च दन्तिनाम् ।
द्रोणो ब्रह्मास्त्रनिर्दग्धं प्रेषयामास मृत्यवे ॥१०२॥
102. sahasraṁ rathasiṁhānāṁ dvisāhasraṁ ca dantinām ,
droṇo brahmāstranirdagdhaṁ preṣayāmāsa mṛtyave.

102. Drona dispatched a thousand chariot-warriors (lit. 'chariot-lions') and two thousand elephants, burnt by the (brahman) weapon (astra), to their death.
आकर्णपलितः श्यामो वयसाशीतिपञ्चकः ।
रणे पर्यचरद्द्रोणो वृद्धः षोडशवर्षवत् ॥१०३॥
103. ākarṇapalitaḥ śyāmo vayasāśītipañcakaḥ ,
raṇe paryacaraddroṇo vṛddhaḥ ṣoḍaśavarṣavat.

103. Drona, gray-haired up to his ears, dark-complexioned, and eighty-five years of age, moved about in battle like a sixteen-year-old.
क्लिश्यमानेषु सैन्येषु वध्यमानेषु राजसु ।
अमर्षवशमापन्नाः पाञ्चाला विमुखाभवन् ॥१०४॥
104. kliśyamāneṣu sainyeṣu vadhyamāneṣu rājasu ,
amarṣavaśamāpannāḥ pāñcālā vimukhābhavan.

104. As the armies were being distressed and the kings were being slain, the Panchalas became overwhelmed by indignation and turned away (in retreat).
तेषु किंचित्प्रभग्नेषु विमुखेषु सपत्नजित् ।
दिव्यमस्त्रं विकुर्वाणो बभूवार्क इवोदितः ॥१०५॥
105. teṣu kiṁcitprabhagneṣu vimukheṣu sapatnajit ,
divyamastraṁ vikurvāṇo babhūvārka ivoditaḥ.
105. teṣu kiñcitprabhagneṣu vimukheṣu sapatnajit
divyam astram vikurvāṇaḥ babhūva arkaḥ iva uditaḥ

105. While those (Panchalas) were somewhat routed and had turned away in retreat, the conqueror of enemies (Drona), manifesting a divine weapon, became like the risen sun.
स मध्यं प्राप्य पाण्डूनां शररश्मिः प्रतापवान् ।
मध्यंगत इवादित्यो दुष्प्रेक्ष्यस्ते पिताभवत् ॥१०६॥
106. sa madhyaṁ prāpya pāṇḍūnāṁ śararaśmiḥ pratāpavān ,
madhyaṁgata ivādityo duṣprekṣyaste pitābhavat.
106. saḥ madhyam prāpya pāṇḍūnām śararaśmiḥ pratāpavān
madhyamgataḥ iva ādityaḥ duṣprekṣyaḥ te pitā abhavat
106. saḥ śararaśmiḥ pratāpavān pāṇḍūnām madhyam prāpya,

te pitā duṣprekṣyaḥ abhavat
106. Having reached the midst of the Pandavas, that glorious (Drona), whose arrows were like rays, became formidable to your father, like the sun having reached its zenith.
ते दह्यमाना द्रोणेन सूर्येणेव विराजता ।
दग्धवीर्या निरुत्साहा बभूवुर्गतचेतसः ॥१०७॥
107. te dahyamānā droṇena sūryeṇeva virājatā ,
dagdhavīryā nirutsāhā babhūvurgatacetasaḥ.
107. te dahyamānāḥ droṇena sūryeṇa iva virājatā
dagdhavīryāḥ nirutsāhāḥ babhūvuḥ gatacetasaḥ
107. te virājatā sūryeṇa iva droṇena dahyamānāḥ

107. Being scorched by Droṇa, who was shining like the sun, they became depleted of strength, devoid of enthusiasm, and lost their spirit.
तान्दृष्ट्वा पीडितान्बाणैर्द्रोणेन मधुसूदनः ।
जयैषी पाण्डुपुत्राणामिदं वचनमब्रवीत् ॥१०८॥
108. tāndṛṣṭvā pīḍitānbāṇairdroṇena madhusūdanaḥ ,
jayaiṣī pāṇḍuputrāṇāmidaṁ vacanamabravīt.
108. tān dṛṣṭvā pīḍitān bāṇaiḥ droṇena madhusūdanaḥ
jayaiṣī pāṇḍuputrāṇām idam vacanam abravīt

108. Having seen them afflicted by Droṇa's arrows, Kṛṣṇa (madhusūdanaḥ), who desired victory for the Pāṇḍavas, spoke these words.
नैष जातु परैः शक्यो जेतुं शस्त्रभृतां वरः ।
अपि वृत्रहणा संख्ये रथयूथपयूथपः ॥१०९॥
109. naiṣa jātu paraiḥ śakyo jetuṁ śastrabhṛtāṁ varaḥ ,
api vṛtrahaṇā saṁkhye rathayūthapayūthapaḥ.
109. na eṣaḥ jātu paraiḥ śakyaḥ jetum śastrabṛtām
varaḥ api vṛtrahaṇā saṅkhye rathayūthapayūthapaḥ
109. śastrabṛtām varaḥ rathayūthapayūthapaḥ eṣaḥ jātu
saṅkhye paraiḥ api vṛtrahaṇā na jetum śakyaḥ
109. This chief among weapon-bearers, the leader of the leaders of chariot divisions (rathayūthapayūthapaḥ), can never be defeated by enemies in battle, not even by Indra (vṛtrahaṇā).
ते यूयं धर्ममुत्सृज्य जयं रक्षत पाण्डवाः ।
यथा वः संयुगे सर्वान्न हन्याद्रुक्मवाहनः ॥११०॥
110. te yūyaṁ dharmamutsṛjya jayaṁ rakṣata pāṇḍavāḥ ,
yathā vaḥ saṁyuge sarvānna hanyādrukmavāhanaḥ.
110. te yūyam dharmam utsṛjya jayam rakṣata pāṇḍavāḥ
yathā vaḥ saṃyuge sarvān na hanyāt rukmavāhanaḥ
110. pāṇḍavāḥ te yūyam dharmam utsṛjya jayam rakṣata
yathā rukmavāhanaḥ saṃyuge vaḥ sarvān na hanyāt
110. O Pāṇḍavas, you must cast aside your conventional sense of duty (dharma) and secure victory, so that the one with the golden chariot (rukmavāhanaḥ) may not slay all of you in battle.
अश्वत्थाम्नि हते नैष युध्येदिति मतिर्मम ।
हतं तं संयुगे कश्चिदाख्यात्वस्मै मृषा नरः ॥१११॥
111. aśvatthāmni hate naiṣa yudhyediti matirmama ,
hataṁ taṁ saṁyuge kaścidākhyātvasmai mṛṣā naraḥ.
111. aśvatthāmni hate na eṣaḥ yudhyet iti matiḥ mama
hatam tam saṃyuge kaścit ākhyātu asmai mṛṣā naraḥ
111. mama matiḥ iti aśvatthāmni hate eṣaḥ na yudhyet
kaścit naraḥ mṛṣā asmai tam hatam saṃyuge ākhyātu
111. My opinion is that if Aśvatthāman were killed, he (Droṇa) would not fight. Therefore, some man should falsely tell him that he (Aśvatthāman) has been killed in battle.
एतन्नारोचयद्वाक्यं कुन्तीपुत्रो धनंजयः ।
अरोचयंस्तु सर्वेऽन्ये कृच्छ्रेण तु युधिष्ठिरः ॥११२॥
112. etannārocayadvākyaṁ kuntīputro dhanaṁjayaḥ ,
arocayaṁstu sarve'nye kṛcchreṇa tu yudhiṣṭhiraḥ.
112. etat na arocayat vākyam kuntīputraḥ dhanaṃjayaḥ
arocayan tu sarve anye kṛcchreṇa tu yudhiṣṭhiraḥ
112. kuntīputraḥ dhanaṃjayaḥ etat vākyam na arocayat
tu sarve anye arocayan tu yudhiṣṭhiraḥ kṛcchreṇa
112. Kuntī's son, Dhanaṃjaya (Arjuna), did not approve this statement. However, all the others did approve it, but Yudhiṣṭhira approved it only with great difficulty.
भीमसेनस्तु सव्रीडमब्रवीत्पितरं तव ।
अश्वत्थामा हत इति तच्चाबुध्यत ते पिता ॥११३॥
113. bhīmasenastu savrīḍamabravītpitaraṁ tava ,
aśvatthāmā hata iti taccābudhyata te pitā.
113. bhīmasenaḥ tu savrīḍam abravīt pitaram tava
aśvatthāmā hataḥ iti tat ca abudhyata te pitā
113. tu bhīmasenaḥ savrīḍam tava pitaram abravīt
iti aśvatthāmā hataḥ ca te pitā tat abudhyata
113. But Bhīmasena, with some shame, said to your (Dhṛtarāṣṭra's) preceptor (Droṇa), 'Aśvatthāman is killed.' And your preceptor (Droṇa) understood that.
स शङ्कमानस्तन्मिथ्या धर्मराजमपृच्छत ।
हतं वाप्यहतं वाजौ त्वां पिता पुत्रवत्सलः ॥११४॥
114. sa śaṅkamānastanmithyā dharmarājamapṛcchata ,
hataṁ vāpyahataṁ vājau tvāṁ pitā putravatsalaḥ.
114. saḥ śaṅkamānaḥ tat mithyā dharmarājam apṛcchat
hatam vā api ahatam vā ajau tvām pitā putravatsalaḥ
114. saḥ śaṅkamānaḥ tat mithyā dharmarājam apṛcchat ajau
hatam vā api ahatam vā tvām putravatsalaḥ pitā
114. He (Droṇa), suspecting that it was false, asked the king of natural law (dharma), Yudhiṣṭhira: 'Is he (Aśvatthāman) killed or not killed in battle? (I ask) you, (as I am) a father affectionate to his son.'
तदतथ्यभये मग्नो जये सक्तो युधिष्ठिरः ।
अश्वत्थामानमाहेदं हतः कुञ्जर इत्युत ।
भीमेन गिरिवर्ष्माणं मालवस्येन्द्रवर्मणः ॥११५॥
115. tadatathyabhaye magno jaye sakto yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ,
aśvatthāmānamāhedaṁ hataḥ kuñjara ityuta ,
bhīmena girivarṣmāṇaṁ mālavasyendravarmaṇaḥ.
115. tat atathya bhaye magnaḥ jaye saktaḥ
yudhiṣṭhiraḥ aśvatthāmānam āha idam
hataḥ kuñjaraḥ iti uta bhīmena
girivarṣmāṇam mālavasya indravarmaṇaḥ
115. yudhiṣṭhiraḥ tat-atathya-bhaye magnaḥ jaye
saktaḥ idam āha iti uta: aśvatthāmānam
[nāma] kuñjaraḥ hataḥ [saḥ kuñjaraḥ] bhīmena
mālavasya indravarmaṇaḥ girivarṣmāṇam [āṣīt]
115. Yudhishthira (yudhiṣṭhira), immersed in the fear of uttering an untruth, yet intent on victory, declared this concerning Ashvatthaman (aśvatthāman): "The elephant is killed!" Indeed, this referred to the mountain-sized elephant belonging to Indravardhan (indravarman) of Malava, which had been killed by Bhima (bhīma).
उपसृत्य तदा द्रोणमुच्चैरिदमभाषत ।
यस्यार्थे शस्त्रमाधत्से यमवेक्ष्य च जीवसि ।
पुत्रस्ते दयितो नित्यं सोऽश्वत्थामा निपातितः ॥११६॥
116. upasṛtya tadā droṇamuccairidamabhāṣata ,
yasyārthe śastramādhatse yamavekṣya ca jīvasi ,
putraste dayito nityaṁ so'śvatthāmā nipātitaḥ.
116. upasṛtya tadā droṇam uccaiḥ idam
abhāṣata | yasya arthe śastram ādhatse
yam avekṣya ca jīvasi | putraḥ te
dayitaḥ nityam saḥ aśvatthāmā nipātitaḥ
116. tadā droṇam upasṛtya uccaiḥ idam abhāṣata:
"te nityam dayitaḥ putraḥ saḥ aśvatthāmā
nipātitaḥ yasya arthe śastram ādhatse
ca yam avekṣya jīvasi [saḥ nipātitaḥ]"
116. Then, approaching Drona (droṇa), he loudly declared this: "Your always beloved son, Ashvatthaman (aśvatthāman), for whose sake you wield your weapons and whose presence sustains your life, has been slain!"
तच्छ्रुत्वा विमनास्तत्र आचार्यो महदप्रियम् ।
नियम्य दिव्यान्यस्त्राणि नायुध्यत यथा पुरा ॥११७॥
117. tacchrutvā vimanāstatra ācāryo mahadapriyam ,
niyamya divyānyastrāṇi nāyudhyata yathā purā.
117. tat śrutvā vimanāḥ tatra ācāryaḥ mahat apriyam |
niyamya divyāni astrāṇi na ayudhyata yathā purā
117. tat mahat apriyam śrutvā ācāryaḥ tatra vimanāḥ [abhūta]
divyāni astrāṇi niyamya [saḥ] yathā purā na ayudhyata
117. Hearing that great and unpleasant news, the preceptor (droṇa) became disheartened there. Restraining his divine weapons, he no longer fought as vigorously as before.
तं दृष्ट्वा परमोद्विग्नं शोकोपहतचेतसम् ।
पाञ्चालराजस्य सुतः क्रूरकर्मा समाद्रवत् ॥११८॥
118. taṁ dṛṣṭvā paramodvignaṁ śokopahatacetasam ,
pāñcālarājasya sutaḥ krūrakarmā samādravat.
118. tam dṛṣṭvā parama udvignam śoka upahata cetasam
| pāñcāla-rājasya sutaḥ krūra-karmā sam-adravat

118. Seeing him (droṇa) greatly agitated and with his mind afflicted by sorrow, the son of the Panchala king (pāñcāla-rāja), who was of cruel deeds, rushed forward (to attack him).
तं दृष्ट्वा विहितं मृत्युं लोकतत्त्वविचक्षणः ।
दिव्यान्यस्त्राण्यथोत्सृज्य रणे प्राय उपाविशत् ॥११९॥
119. taṁ dṛṣṭvā vihitaṁ mṛtyuṁ lokatattvavicakṣaṇaḥ ,
divyānyastrāṇyathotsṛjya raṇe prāya upāviśat.
119. tam dṛṣṭvā vihitam mṛtyum lokatattvavicakṣaṇaḥ
divyāni astrāṇi atha utsṛjya raṇe prāya upāviśat

119. Recognizing his impending death (mṛtyu) that had been ordained, the one discerning the true nature of the world (lokatattvavicakṣaṇa) then abandoned his divine weapons and sat down on the battlefield, preparing for a fast unto death.
ततोऽस्य केशान्सव्येन गृहीत्वा पाणिना तदा ।
पार्षतः क्रोशमानानां वीराणामच्छिनच्छिरः ॥१२०॥
120. tato'sya keśānsavyena gṛhītvā pāṇinā tadā ,
pārṣataḥ krośamānānāṁ vīrāṇāmacchinacchiraḥ.
120. tataḥ asya keśān savyena gṛhītvā pāṇinā tadā
pārṣataḥ krośamānānām vīrāṇām acchinat śiraḥ
120. tadā tataḥ pārṣataḥ savyena pāṇinā asya keśān
gṛhītvā krośamānānām vīrāṇām śiraḥ acchinat
120. Then, at that moment, Dhṛṣṭadyumna (Pārṣata), holding his (Drona's) hair with his left hand, cut off his head, while other warriors (vīras) were crying out in protest.
न हन्तव्यो न हन्तव्य इति ते सर्वतोऽब्रुवन् ।
तथैव चार्जुनो वाहादवरुह्यैनमाद्रवत् ॥१२१॥
121. na hantavyo na hantavya iti te sarvato'bruvan ,
tathaiva cārjuno vāhādavaruhyainamādravat.
121. na hantavyaḥ na hantavyaḥ iti te sarvataḥ abruvan
tathā eva ca arjunaḥ vāhāt avaruhya enam ādravat
121. te sarvataḥ "na hantavyaḥ na hantavyaḥ" iti abruvan
ca tathaiva arjunaḥ vāhāt avaruhya enam ādravat
121. "He must not be killed! He must not be killed!" they cried out from all directions. And similarly, Arjuna, dismounting from his chariot, rushed towards him.
उद्यम्य बाहू त्वरितो ब्रुवाणश्च पुनः पुनः ।
जीवन्तमानयाचार्यं मा वधीरिति धर्मवित् ॥१२२॥
122. udyamya bāhū tvarito bruvāṇaśca punaḥ punaḥ ,
jīvantamānayācāryaṁ mā vadhīriti dharmavit.
122. udyamya bāhū tvaritaḥ bruvāṇaḥ ca punaḥ punaḥ
jīvantam ānaya ācāryam mā vadhīḥ iti dharmavit
122. dharmavit tvaritaḥ bāhū udyamya ca punaḥ punaḥ
"jīvantam ācāryam ānaya mā vadhīḥ" iti bruvāṇaḥ
122. Quickly raising his two arms, and repeating again and again, "Bring the preceptor (ācārya) alive! Do not kill him!" thus spoke Arjuna, who knew the natural law (dharma).
तथापि वार्यमाणेन कौरवैरर्जुनेन च ।
हत एव नृशंसेन पिता तव नरर्षभ ॥१२३॥
123. tathāpi vāryamāṇena kauravairarjunena ca ,
hata eva nṛśaṁsena pitā tava nararṣabha.
123. tathā api vāryamāṇena kauravaiḥ arjunena ca
hataḥ eva nṛśaṃsena pitā tava nararṣabha
123. nararṣabha,
tathā api kauravaiḥ arjunena ca vāryamāṇena nṛśaṃsena tava pitā hataḥ eva.
123. Nonetheless, even though he was being restrained by the Kauravas and Arjuna, your father was indeed killed by that cruel one, O best among men.
सैनिकाश्च ततः सर्वे प्राद्रवन्त भयार्दिताः ।
वयं चापि निरुत्साहा हते पितरि तेऽनघ ॥१२४॥
124. sainikāśca tataḥ sarve prādravanta bhayārditāḥ ,
vayaṁ cāpi nirutsāhā hate pitari te'nagha.
124. sainikāḥ ca tataḥ sarve prādravanta bhayārditāḥ
vayam ca api nirutsāhā hate pitari te anagha
124. tatas ca sarve bhayārditāḥ sainikāḥ prādravanta.
anagha,
te pitari hate ca vayam api nirutsāhā (āsamahi).
124. And then, all the soldiers, afflicted by fear, fled. And we too, O sinless one, became dispirited when your father was killed.
संजय उवाच ।
तच्छ्रुत्वा द्रोणपुत्रस्तु निधनं पितुराहवे ।
क्रोधमाहारयत्तीव्रं पदाहत इवोरगः ॥१२५॥
125. saṁjaya uvāca ,
tacchrutvā droṇaputrastu nidhanaṁ piturāhave ,
krodhamāhārayattīvraṁ padāhata ivoragaḥ.
125. saṃjaya uvāca tat śrutvā droṇaputraḥ tu nidhanam pituḥ
āhave krodham āhārayat tīvram padāhataḥ iva uragaḥ
125. saṃjaya uvāca: droṇaputraḥ tu āhave pituḥ nidhanam tat śrutvā padāhataḥ uragaḥ iva tīvram krodham āhārayat.
125. Sañjaya said: Having heard of his father's death in battle, Droṇa's son (Aśvatthāmā) then experienced intense anger, like a serpent struck by a foot.
