While a terrible gamble involving the loss of lives was taking place, indeed, in the battle of dreadful form, which greatly increased the dominion of Yama (death).

The Pāṇḍavas dispersed your army with sharp arrows. Similarly, your warriors killed the Pāṇḍava soldiers.

As that terrifying battle, which struck fear into the timid, was thus ongoing, and the forenoon had indeed arrived, specifically at the time of the sun's rising.

O King, the enemies, who had achieved their aim and were protected by a great soul (mahātman), fought your army, treating death as their final retreat.

O scion of Kuru, your army was perishing, agitated like a female deer surrounded by fire, due to the powerful, fierce Pandavas who had found their targets and were striking effectively.
तां दृष्ट्वा सीदतीं सेनां पङ्के गामिव दुर्बलाम् ।
उज्जिहीर्षुस्तदा शल्यः प्रायात्पाण्डुचमूं प्रति ॥१०॥

Having seen that weak, perishing army, like a cow sinking in the mud, Śalya then, desiring to rescue it, advanced towards the Pandava army.
मद्रराजस्तु संक्रुद्धो गृहीत्वा धनुरुत्तमम् ।
अभ्यद्रवत संग्रामे पाण्डवानाततायिनः ॥११॥

But the king of Madras, greatly enraged, took his excellent bow and rushed into battle against the Pandavas, who were the aggressors.
पाण्डवाश्च महाराज समरे जितकाशिनः ।

And O great king, the Pandavas, who were victorious in battle, approached the king of Madras and pierced him with sharp arrows.

Then, the very powerful King of Madra, with hundreds of sharp arrows, harassed that army, right before the eyes of the King of Righteousness (dharma).

Then, O King, various forms appeared in many ways. And the earth, along with its mountains, shook, making a rumbling sound.
सदण्डशूला दीप्ताग्राः शीर्यमाणाः समन्ततः ।
उल्का भूमिं दिवः पेतुराहत्य रविमण्डलम् ॥१५॥

15.
Meteors, appearing like staffs and spears with blazing tips, fell from the sky to the earth, crumbling on all sides after striking the sun's orb.
मृगाश्च माहिषाश्चापि पक्षिणश्च विशां पते ।
अपसव्यं तदा चक्रुः सेनां ते बहुशो नृप ॥१६॥

16. mṛgāśca māhiṣāścāpi pakṣiṇaśca viśāṁ pate ,
apasavyaṁ tadā cakruḥ senāṁ te bahuśo nṛpa.

O Lord of people (viśāmpate), O King (nṛpa), then deer, buffaloes, and also birds, frequently circled the army to the left, which was an inauspicious sign.

तथा सर्वाण्यनीकानि संनिपत्य जनाधिप ।
अभ्ययुः कौरवा राजन्पाण्डवानामनीकिनीम् ॥१७॥

17. tatastadyuddhamatyugramabhavatsaṁghacāriṇām ,
tathā sarvāṇyanīkāni saṁnipatya janādhipa ,
abhyayuḥ kauravā rājanpāṇḍavānāmanīkinīm.

tataḥ tat yuddham atyugram abhavat
saṅghacāriṇām tathā sarvāṇi

anīkāni saṃnipatya janādhipa abhyayuḥ

युद्धम् संघचारिणाम् अभवत् तथा

17.
O King, then that exceedingly fierce battle of the allied forces began. And thus, O ruler of men, all the Kaurava divisions, having assembled, advanced upon the army of the Pandavas.
शल्यस्तु शरवर्षेण वर्षन्निव सहस्रदृक् ।
अभ्यवर्षददीनात्मा कुन्तीपुत्रं युधिष्ठिरम् ॥१८॥

But Śalya, with his undaunted spirit (ātman), rained down a shower of arrows upon Yudhiṣṭhira, Kuntī's son, as if he were the thousand-eyed (Indra) raining.
भीमसेनं शरैश्चापि रुक्मपुङ्खैः शिलाशितः ।
द्रौपदेयांस्तथा सर्वान्माद्रीपुत्रौ च पाण्डवौ ॥१९॥

19. bhīmasenaṁ śaraiścāpi rukmapuṅkhaiḥ śilāśitaḥ ,

And Śalya, resolute as if sharpened on stone, also showered Bhimasena with golden-feathered arrows. Likewise, he showered all the sons of Draupadī, and the two Pandavas, the sons of Mādrī.

एकैकं दशभिर्बाणैर्विव्याध च महाबलः ।

tato'sṛjadbāṇavarṣaṁ gharmānte maghavāniva.

And the mighty Śalya struck each of them – Dhṛṣṭadyumna, Śaineya, and also Śikhaṇḍin – with ten arrows. Then, like Indra at the end of the summer season, he released a torrent of arrows.

Then, O king, thousands of Prabhadrakas and Somakas are seen, both fallen and being struck down by Śalya's arrows.

Śalya's arrows fell like swarms of bees, like multitudes of locusts, and like thunderclaps from the clouds.

Elephants and horses, foot soldiers and charioteers, all distressed, fell down due to Śalya's arrows; they staggered and roared.
आविष्ट इव मद्रेशो मन्युना पौरुषेण च ।
प्राच्छादयदरीन्संख्ये कालसृष्ट इवान्तकः ।
विनर्दमानो मद्रेशो मेघह्रादो महाबलः ॥२४॥

Overcome by wrath and valor, the lord of Madras (Śalya) overwhelmed his enemies in battle, just like Yama (antaka), the destroyer created by time. Roaring like a thunderous cloud, the mighty lord of Madras [fought].

Being struck down by Śalya, that army of the Pāṇḍavas fled towards Yudhiṣṭhira, also known as Ajātaśatru, the son of Kuntī.

Then, in that battle, the swift-handed [Śalya], having assailed that [Pāṇḍava] army with sharp arrows, afflicted Yudhiṣṭhira with a great volley of arrows.
तमापतन्तं पत्त्यश्वैः क्रुद्धो राजा युधिष्ठिरः ।
अवारयच्छरैस्तीक्ष्णैर्मत्तं द्विपमिवाङ्कुशैः ॥२७॥

Enraged, King Yudhiṣṭhira checked [Śalya], who was advancing with infantry and cavalry, with sharp arrows, just as one would control a maddened elephant with goads.
तस्य शल्यः शरं घोरं मुमोचाशीविषोपमम् ।
सोऽभ्यविध्यन्महात्मानं वेगेनाभ्यपतच्च गाम् ॥२८॥

Śalya then shot a terrible arrow, which was like a venomous snake, at him (Yudhiṣṭhira). That [arrow] pierced the magnanimous (mahātman) one and swiftly fell to the ground.

Then, an enraged Vṛkodara (Bhīma) pierced Śalya with seven arrows. Sahadeva, in turn, struck him with five, and Nakula with ten arrows.

And the sons of Draupadī, with their arrows, rained down upon the heroic, illustrious foe-slayer, the son of Artāyana (Śalya), just as clouds pour rain upon a mountain.

Then, having seen Śalya being tormented from all sides by the Pārthas (sons of Pṛthā), Kṛtavarmā and Kṛpa, both greatly enraged, rushed forward.
उलूकश्च पतत्री च शकुनिश्चापि सौबलः ।
स्मयमानश्च शनकैरश्वत्थामा महारथः ।
तव पुत्राश्च कार्त्स्न्येन जुगुपुः शल्यमाहवे ॥३२॥

And Ulūka, Patatrī, Śakuni (the son of Subala), and Aśvatthāmā, the great charioteer - who was smiling gently - along with your sons, completely protected Śalya in that battle.

Kṛtavarmā, having struck Bhimasena with three arrows, then obstructed his wrathful advance with a great volley of arrows.

Enraged Kṛpa harassed Dhṛṣṭadyumna with volleys of arrows. Śakuni attacked the sons of Draupadi, and Droṇa's son (Drauṇi) confronted the two twins (Nakula and Sahadeva).

Duryodhana, fierce in his valor and mighty, confronted Keśava (Krishna) and Arjuna, the foremost among warriors, in battle and struck them with arrows.

Thus, O lord of men, hundreds of dreadful and diverse duels occurred here and there between your warriors and the enemies.

In battle, Bhoja (Kṛtavarman) killed Bhīma's deer-colored horses. With his horses slain, that son of Pāṇḍu (Bhīma) dismounted from his chariot's platform and fought, mace in hand, as if Death (kāla) itself had raised its club.

The king of Madras (Śalya) killed Sahadeva's horses right in front of him. Then, Sahadeva, with his sword, slew Śalya's son.

The preceptor (ācārya) Gautama (Droṇa), in turn, fought Dhṛṣṭadyumna. Remaining composed, he fought the equally composed opponent; though diligent, he faced one who fought with even greater diligence.

And the preceptor's son (Aśvatthāman), not exceedingly enraged, as if smiling, pierced each of those valiant sons of Draupadī with ten arrows.

O king, Śalya, greatly enraged, while striking down the Somakas and Pāṇḍavas, again tormented Yudhiṣṭhira with his sharp arrows.

It was like Yama's staff, or the arisen Night of Destruction (kālarātri), capable of ending the lives of elephants, horses, and men.

Adorned with golden plates, it was like a blazing meteor (ulkā), or an exceedingly fierce Śaivya female serpent (vyālī); it resembled a thunderbolt (vajra) and was made of iron.

It was like a desired woman, anointed with a paste of sandalwood and aloewood, and like the tongue of Yama (Vaivasvata), smeared with fat, marrow, and blood.

It was like Indra's (Vāsava) thunderbolt, with the loud sound of hundreds of bells; possessing the appearance of a freed venomous snake and even smeared with elephant ichor.

With which (mace), the mighty one (mahābalaḥ), enraged (kruddhaḥ) and dedicated to Draupadi's (Draupadyāḥ) cherished desire (priyam āsthitaḥ), though restrained by many, killed very many arrogant and deceitful Guhyakas (guhyakān) in Kubera's abode (dhanadālaye) for the sake of the Mandāra tree.

The mighty-armed one (mahābāhuḥ), having lifted that mace – which was eight-edged (aṣṭāśrim), heavy like a diamond (vajragauravām), and had a multitude of diamonds, gems, and jewels (vajramaṇiratnaughām) – rushed towards Shalya (śalyam) in battle (raṇe).

Skilled in battle (yuddhakusalaḥ), he crushed Shalya's (śalyasya) four very swift (mahājavān) horses (aśvān) with that mace (tayā gadayā) of terrible sound (dāruṇanādayā).

Then (tataḥ), the hero (vīraḥ) Shalya (śalyaḥ), enraged in battle (raṇe kruddhaḥ) and roaring (nadan), plunged a javelin (tomaram) into (Bhima's) broad chest (pīne vakṣasi). And it (the javelin), having pierced (bhittvā) the armor (varma), passed through (abhyagāt).

Bhima, completely undeterred, then picked up that very javelin and pierced the charioteer of the Madra king in the heart.

With his armor shattered, spewing blood, and his mind terrified, he (the charioteer) fell miserably face down, while the Madra king retreated.
