कोटिकाश्य उवाच ।
का त्वं कदम्बस्य विनम्य शाखामेकाश्रमे तिष्ठसि शोभमाना ।
देदीप्यमानाग्निशिखेव नक्तं दोधूयमाना पवनेन सुभ्रूः ॥१॥
1. koṭikāśya uvāca ,
kā tvaṁ kadambasya vinamya śākhā;mekāśrame tiṣṭhasi śobhamānā ,
dedīpyamānāgniśikheva naktaṁ; dodhūyamānā pavanena subhrūḥ.
1. koṭikāśyaḥ uvāca kā tvam kadambasya
vinamya śākhām ekāśrame tiṣṭhasi
śobhamānā dedīpyamānāgniśikhā iva
naktam dodhūyamānā pavanena subhrūḥ
1. Kotikashya said: "Who are you, O beautiful-browed one, standing radiantly in this solitary hermitage, bending a branch of the Kadamba tree? You appear like a brightly blazing flame at night, being fanned by the wind."
अतीव रूपेण समन्विता त्वं न चाप्यरण्येषु बिभेषि किं नु ।
देवी नु यक्षी यदि दानवी वा वराप्सरा दैत्यवराङ्गना वा ॥२॥
2. atīva rūpeṇa samanvitā tvaṁ; na cāpyaraṇyeṣu bibheṣi kiṁ nu ,
devī nu yakṣī yadi dānavī vā; varāpsarā daityavarāṅganā vā.
2. atīva rūpeṇa samanvitā tvam na ca api araṇyeṣu bibheṣi kim
nu devī nu yakṣī yadi dānavī vā varāpsarā daityavarāṅganā vā
2. You are endowed with exceeding beauty, and you do not fear in these forests; what could this mean? Are you a goddess, or a Yakshi, or a Danavi, or a chief Apsara, or a chief Daitya woman?
वपुष्मती वोरगराजकन्या वनेचरी वा क्षणदाचरस्त्री ।
यद्येव राज्ञो वरुणस्य पत्नी यमस्य सोमस्य धनेश्वरस्य ॥३॥
3. vapuṣmatī voragarājakanyā; vanecarī vā kṣaṇadācarastrī ,
yadyeva rājño varuṇasya patnī; yamasya somasya dhaneśvarasya.
3. vapuṣmatī vā uragarājakanyā vanecarī vā kṣaṇadācarastrī yadi
eva rājñaḥ varuṇasya patnī yamasya somasya dhaneśvarasya
3. Or are you an embodied being, or the daughter of the king of serpents, or a forest dweller, or the wife of a night-roaming demon? If that is the case, are you the wife of King Varuna, or of Yama, or of Soma, or of Kubera (Dhaneshwara)?
धातुर्विधातुः सवितुर्विभोर्वा शक्रस्य वा त्वं सदनात्प्रपन्ना ।
न ह्येव नः पृच्छसि ये वयं स्म न चापि जानीम तवेह नाथम् ॥४॥
4. dhāturvidhātuḥ saviturvibhorvā; śakrasya vā tvaṁ sadanātprapannā ,
na hyeva naḥ pṛcchasi ye vayaṁ sma; na cāpi jānīma taveha nātham.
4. dhātuḥ vidhātuḥ savituḥ vibhoḥ vā
śakrasya vā tvam sadanāt prapannā
na hi eva naḥ pṛcchasi ye vayam sma
na ca api jānīma tava iha nātham
4. You have arrived from the abode of either Dhātṛ, Vidhātṛ, Savitṛ, or Vibhu, or from the abode of Indra (Śakra). Indeed, you do not ask who we are, nor do we know your protector here.
वयं हि मानं तव वर्धयन्तः पृच्छाम भद्रे प्रभवं प्रभुं च ।
आचक्ष्व बन्धूंश्च पतिं कुलं च तत्त्वेन यच्चेह करोषि कार्यम् ॥५॥
5. vayaṁ hi mānaṁ tava vardhayantaḥ; pṛcchāma bhadre prabhavaṁ prabhuṁ ca ,
ācakṣva bandhūṁśca patiṁ kulaṁ ca; tattvena yacceha karoṣi kāryam.
5. vayam hi mānam tava vardhayantaḥ
pṛcchāma bhadre prabhavam prabhum ca
ācakṣva bandhūn ca patim kulam ca
tattvena yat ca iha karoṣi kāryam
5. Indeed, fair lady, we ask about your origin and your lord, thereby increasing your respect. Please tell us truthfully your relatives, your husband, your family, and what work you are doing here.
अहं तु राज्ञः सुरथस्य पुत्रो यं कोटिकाश्येति विदुर्मनुष्याः ।
असौ तु यस्तिष्ठति काञ्चनाङ्गे रथे हुतोऽग्निश्चयने यथैव ।
त्रिगर्तराजः कमलायताक्षि क्षेमंकरो नाम स एष वीरः ॥६॥
6. ahaṁ tu rājñaḥ surathasya putro; yaṁ koṭikāśyeti vidurmanuṣyāḥ ,
asau tu yastiṣṭhati kāñcanāṅge; rathe huto'gniścayane yathaiva ,
trigartarājaḥ kamalāyatākṣi; kṣemaṁkaro nāma sa eṣa vīraḥ.
6. aham tu rājñaḥ surathasya putraḥ yam koṭikāśya
iti viduḥ manuṣyāḥ asau tu yaḥ tiṣṭhati kāñcanāṅge
rathe hutaḥ agniḥ cayane yathā eva trigartarājaḥ
kamalāyatākṣi kṣemaṅkaraḥ nāma sa eṣa vīraḥ
6. I am the son of King Suratha, whom people know as Koṭikāśya. And that one, who stands in a golden-bodied chariot, like a fire offered on an altar (cayana), is the hero Kṣemaṅkara, the King of Trigarta, O lotus-eyed one.
अस्मात्परस्त्वेष महाधनुष्मान्पुत्रः कुणिन्दाधिपतेर्वरिष्ठः ।
निरीक्षते त्वां विपुलायतांसः सुविस्मितः पर्वतवासनित्यः ॥७॥
7. asmātparastveṣa mahādhanuṣmā;nputraḥ kuṇindādhipatervariṣṭhaḥ ,
nirīkṣate tvāṁ vipulāyatāṁsaḥ; suvismitaḥ parvatavāsanityaḥ.
7. asmāt paraḥ tu eṣa mahādhanuṣmān
putraḥ kuṇindādhipateḥ variṣṭhaḥ
nirīkṣate tvām vipulāyatāṃsaḥ
su vismitaḥ parvatavāsanityaḥ
7. Superior to him, this great archer is the foremost son of the King of Kuṇinda. With broad, extended shoulders, he gazes at you, greatly astonished, he who always dwells in the mountains.
असौ तु यः पुष्करिणीसमीपे श्यामो युवा तिष्ठति दर्शनीयः ।
इक्ष्वाकुराज्ञः सुबलस्य पुत्रः स एष हन्ता द्विषतां सुगात्रि ॥८॥
8. asau tu yaḥ puṣkariṇīsamīpe; śyāmo yuvā tiṣṭhati darśanīyaḥ ,
ikṣvākurājñaḥ subalasya putraḥ; sa eṣa hantā dviṣatāṁ sugātri.
8. asau tu yaḥ puṣkariṇīsamīpe
śyāmaḥ yuvā tiṣṭhati darśanīyaḥ
ikṣvākurājñaḥ subalasya putraḥ
saḥ eṣaḥ hantā dviṣatām sugātri
8. But he, the handsome, dark-complexioned young man who stands near the lotus pond, is the son of King Subala of the Ikṣvāku dynasty, and he is the slayer of enemies, O fair-limbed one.
यस्यानुयात्रं ध्वजिनः प्रयान्ति सौवीरका द्वादश राजपुत्राः ।
शोणाश्वयुक्तेषु रथेषु सर्वे मखेषु दीप्ता इव हव्यवाहाः ॥९॥
9. yasyānuyātraṁ dhvajinaḥ prayānti; sauvīrakā dvādaśa rājaputrāḥ ,
śoṇāśvayukteṣu ratheṣu sarve; makheṣu dīptā iva havyavāhāḥ.
9. yasya anuyātraṃ dhvajinaḥ prayānti
sauvīrakāḥ dvādaśa rājaputrāḥ
śoṇāśvayukteṣu ratheṣu
sarve makheṣu dīptāḥ iva havyavāhāḥ
9. yasya anuyātraṃ dvādaśa sauvīrakāḥ
rājaputrāḥ dhvajinaḥ
śoṇāśvayukteṣu ratheṣu sarve makheṣu
dīptāḥ havyavāhāḥ iva prayānti
9. Twelve Sauvira princes, bearing standards, follow in his procession. All of them, in chariots yoked with reddish horses, gleam like radiant sacrificial fires (havyavāha) during Vedic rituals (makha).
अङ्गारकः कुञ्जरगुप्तकश्च शत्रुंजयः संजयसुप्रवृद्धौ ।
प्रभंकरोऽथ भ्रमरो रविश्च शूरः प्रतापः कुहरश्च नाम ॥१०॥
10. aṅgārakaḥ kuñjaraguptakaśca; śatruṁjayaḥ saṁjayasupravṛddhau ,
prabhaṁkaro'tha bhramaro raviśca; śūraḥ pratāpaḥ kuharaśca nāma.
10. aṅgārakaḥ kuñjaraguptakaḥ ca
śatruñjayaḥ saṃjayasuprāvṛddhau
prabhaṅkaraḥ atha bhramaraḥ raviḥ ca
śūraḥ pratāpaḥ kuharaḥ ca nāma
10. Angāraka, Kuñjaraguptaka, Śatruñjaya, Saṃjaya and Suprāvṛddha, then Prabhaṅkara, Bhramara, and Ravi, and also Śūra, Pratāpa, and Kuhara are their names (nāma).
यं षट्सहस्रा रथिनोऽनुयान्ति नागा हयाश्चैव पदातिनश्च ।
जयद्रथो नाम यदि श्रुतस्ते सौवीरराजः सुभगे स एषः ॥११॥
11. yaṁ ṣaṭsahasrā rathino'nuyānti; nāgā hayāścaiva padātinaśca ,
jayadratho nāma yadi śrutaste; sauvīrarājaḥ subhage sa eṣaḥ.
11. yaṃ ṣaṭsahasrāḥ rathinaḥ anuyānti
nāgāḥ hayāḥ ca eva padātinaḥ
ca jayadrathaḥ nāma yadi śrutaḥ
te saubīrarājaḥ subhage saḥ eṣaḥ
11. O beautiful one (subhage), this is indeed Jayadratha, the King of Saubhīra, if you have heard of him, whom six thousand charioteers, along with elephants, horses, and foot soldiers, follow.
तस्यापरे भ्रातरोऽदीनसत्त्वा बलाहकानीकविदारणाध्याः ।
सौवीरवीराः प्रवरा युवानो राजानमेते बलिनोऽनुयान्ति ॥१२॥
12. tasyāpare bhrātaro'dīnasattvā; balāhakānīkavidāraṇādhyāḥ ,
sauvīravīrāḥ pravarā yuvāno; rājānamete balino'nuyānti.
12. tasya apare bhrātaraḥ adīnasattvāḥ
balāhakaanīkavidāraṇādhyāḥ
| sauvīravīrāḥ pravarāḥ yuvānaḥ
rājānam ete balinaḥ anuyānti
12. His other brothers, whose spirits were undaunted and who were adept at scattering armies like cloud formations – these excellent, young, powerful warriors of the Souvira country follow the king.
एतैः सहायैरुपयाति राजा मरुद्गणैरिन्द्र इवाभिगुप्तः ।
अजानतां ख्यापय नः सुकेशि कस्यासि भार्या दुहिता च कस्य ॥१३॥
13. etaiḥ sahāyairupayāti rājā; marudgaṇairindra ivābhiguptaḥ ,
ajānatāṁ khyāpaya naḥ sukeśi; kasyāsi bhāryā duhitā ca kasya.
13. etaiḥ sahāyaiḥ upayāti rājā
marudgaṇaiḥ indraḥ iva abhiguptaḥ
| ajānatām khyāpaya naḥ sukeśi
kasya asi bhāryā duhitā ca kasya
13. With these allies, the king proceeds, protected as Indra is by the hosts of Maruts. O beautiful-haired lady (Sukeśi), reveal to us, who do not know, whose wife you are and whose daughter.
