श्रूयतां पार्थ तत्त्वेन विश्वामित्रो यथा पुरा ।
ब्राह्मणत्वं गतस्तात ब्रह्मर्षित्वं तथैव च ॥१॥

1. Bhishma spoke: O Pārtha, listen carefully to the truth of how Viśvāmitra, in ancient times, attained the state of a brahmin (brāhmaṇya), and similarly, the status of a brahmin sage (brahmarṣitva), O dear one.
भरतस्यान्वये चैवाजमीढो नाम पार्थिवः ।
बभूव भरतश्रेष्ठ यज्वा धर्मभृतां वरः ॥२॥
2. bharatasyānvaye caivājamīḍho nāma pārthivaḥ ,
babhūva bharataśreṣṭha yajvā dharmabhṛtāṁ varaḥ.
2. bharatasya anvaye ca eva ājamīḍhaḥ nāma pārthivaḥ
| babhūva bharataśreṣṭha yajvā dharmabhṛtām varaḥ
2. bharataśreṣṭha ca eva bharatasya anvaye ājamīḍhaḥ

2. And indeed, in the lineage of Bharata, there was a king named Ajamiḍha, O best among the Bharatas, who was a performer of Vedic rituals (yajvā) and the foremost among those who uphold natural law (dharma).
तस्य पुत्रो महानासीज्जह्नुर्नाम नरेश्वरः ।
दुहितृत्वमनुप्राप्ता गङ्गा यस्य महात्मनः ॥३॥
3. tasya putro mahānāsījjahnurnāma nareśvaraḥ ,
duhitṛtvamanuprāptā gaṅgā yasya mahātmanaḥ.
3. tasya putraḥ mahān āsīt jahnuḥ nāma nareśvaraḥ
duhitṛtvam anuprāptā gaṅgā yasya mahātmanaḥ

3. His great son was the king named Jahnu, to whom the Gaṅgā attained the status of a daughter, such was the nobility of his soul.
तस्यात्मजस्तुल्यगुणः सिन्धुद्वीपो महायशाः ।
सिन्धुद्वीपाच्च राजर्षिर्बलाकाश्वो महाबलः ॥४॥
4. tasyātmajastulyaguṇaḥ sindhudvīpo mahāyaśāḥ ,
sindhudvīpācca rājarṣirbalākāśvo mahābalaḥ.
4. tasya ātmajaḥ tulyaguṇaḥ sindhudvīpaḥ mahāyaśāḥ
sindhudvīpāt ca rājarṣiḥ balākāśvaḥ mahābalaḥ

sindhudvīpāt ca rājarṣiḥ mahābalaḥ balākāśvaḥ
4. His son, equal in virtues and very famous, was Sindhudvīpa. And from Sindhudvīpa was born the royal sage Balākāśva, who was very powerful.
वल्लभस्तस्य तनयः साक्षाद्धर्म इवापरः ।
कुशिकस्तस्य तनयः सहस्राक्षसमद्युतिः ॥५॥
5. vallabhastasya tanayaḥ sākṣāddharma ivāparaḥ ,
kuśikastasya tanayaḥ sahasrākṣasamadyutiḥ.
5. vallabhaḥ tasya tanayaḥ sākṣāt dharmaḥ iva aparaḥ
kuśikaḥ tasya tanayaḥ sahasrākṣasamadyutiḥ
5. tasya tanayaḥ vallabhaḥ sākṣāt aparaḥ dharmaḥ
iva tasya tanayaḥ kuśikaḥ sahasrākṣasamadyutiḥ
5. His son was Vallabha, who was like a second manifest natural law (dharma) itself. His son was Kuśika, whose splendor was like that of Indra (Sahasrākṣa).
कुशिकस्यात्मजः श्रीमान्गाधिर्नाम जनेश्वरः ।
अपुत्रः स महाबाहुर्वनवासमुदावसत् ॥६॥
6. kuśikasyātmajaḥ śrīmāngādhirnāma janeśvaraḥ ,
aputraḥ sa mahābāhurvanavāsamudāvasat.
6. kuśikasya ātmajaḥ śrīmān gādhiḥ nāma janeśvaraḥ
aputraḥ saḥ mahābāhuḥ vanavāsam udāvasat
6. kuśikasya śrīmān ātmajaḥ gādhiḥ nāma janeśvaraḥ
(āsīt) saḥ mahābāhuḥ aputraḥ (san) vanavāsam udāvasat
6. Kuśika's glorious son was the king named Gādhi. Being childless, that mighty-armed (king) dwelt in the forest.
कन्या जज्ञे सुता तस्य वने निवसतः सतः ।
नाम्ना सत्यवती नाम रूपेणाप्रतिमा भुवि ॥७॥
7. kanyā jajñe sutā tasya vane nivasataḥ sataḥ ,
nāmnā satyavatī nāma rūpeṇāpratimā bhuvi.
7. kanyā jajñe sutā tasya vane nivasataḥ sataḥ
nāmnā satyavatī nāma rūpeṇa apratimā bhuvi
7. tasya sataḥ nivasataḥ vane kanyā sutā nāmnā

7. While he was living in the forest, a daughter was born to him. Named Satyavatī, she was unequalled in beauty on earth.
तां वव्रे भार्गवः श्रीमांश्च्यवनस्यात्मजः प्रभुः ।
ऋचीक इति विख्यातो विपुले तपसि स्थितः ॥८॥
8. tāṁ vavre bhārgavaḥ śrīmāṁścyavanasyātmajaḥ prabhuḥ ,
ṛcīka iti vikhyāto vipule tapasi sthitaḥ.
8. tām vavre bhārgavaḥ śrīmān cyavanasya ātmajaḥ
prabhuḥ ṛcīkaḥ iti vikhyātaḥ vipule tapasi sthitaḥ
8. śrīmān cyavanasya ātmajaḥ prabhuḥ ṛcīkaḥ iti
vikhyātaḥ vipule tapasi sthitaḥ bhārgavaḥ tām vavre
8. The glorious Bhārgava, son of Cyavana and a lord, renowned as Ṛcīka, who was engaged in profound asceticism (tapas), chose her.
स तां न प्रददौ तस्मै ऋचीकाय महात्मने ।
दरिद्र इति मत्वा वै गाधिः शत्रुनिबर्हणः ॥९॥
9. sa tāṁ na pradadau tasmai ṛcīkāya mahātmane ,
daridra iti matvā vai gādhiḥ śatrunibarhaṇaḥ.

daridraḥ iti matvā vai gādhiḥ śatrunibarhaṇaḥ
9. śatrunibarhaṇaḥ gādhiḥ saḥ daridraḥ iti matvā

9. Gādhi, the slayer of foes, certainly did not give her to that great-souled Ṛcīka, considering him to be poor.
प्रत्याख्याय पुनर्यान्तमब्रवीद्राजसत्तमः ।
शुल्कं प्रदीयतां मह्यं ततो वेत्स्यसि मे सुताम् ॥१०॥
10. pratyākhyāya punaryāntamabravīdrājasattamaḥ ,
śulkaṁ pradīyatāṁ mahyaṁ tato vetsyasi me sutām.
10. pratyākhyāya punaḥ yāntam abravīt rājasattamaḥ
śulkam pradīyatām mahyam tataḥ vetsyasi me sutām
10. rājasattamaḥ pratyākhyāya punaḥ yāntam abravīt:
śulkam mahyam pradīyatām; tataḥ me sutām vetsyasi
10. Having rejected him, the best of kings spoke to him as he was departing: 'Let the bride-price be given to me; then you shall obtain my daughter.'
ऋचीक उवाच ।
किं प्रयच्छामि राजेन्द्र तुभ्यं शुल्कमहं नृप ।
दुहितुर्ब्रूह्यसंसक्तो मात्राभूत्ते विचारणा ॥११॥
11. ṛcīka uvāca ,
kiṁ prayacchāmi rājendra tubhyaṁ śulkamahaṁ nṛpa ,
duhiturbrūhyasaṁsakto mātrābhūtte vicāraṇā.
11. ṛcīkaḥ uvāca kim prayacchāmi rājendra tubhyam śulkam
aham nṛpa duhituḥ brūhi asaṃsaktaḥ mā abhūt te vicāraṇā
11. ṛcīkaḥ uvāca rājendra nṛpa aham tubhyam duhituḥ śulkam
kim prayacchāmi asaṃsaktaḥ brūhi te vicāraṇā mā abhūt
11. Ṛcīka said: "O great king, what bride-price shall I give to you? Speak forth, telling me without hesitation what you desire for your daughter, and let there be no second thoughts on your part."
गाधिरुवाच ।
चन्द्ररश्मिप्रकाशानां हयानां वातरंहसाम् ।
एकतः श्यामकर्णानां सहस्रं देहि भार्गव ॥१२॥
12. gādhiruvāca ,
candraraśmiprakāśānāṁ hayānāṁ vātaraṁhasām ,
ekataḥ śyāmakarṇānāṁ sahasraṁ dehi bhārgava.
12. gādhiḥ uvāca candraraśmiprakāśānām hayānām vātarahṃhasām
ekataḥ śyāmakarṇānām sahasram dehi bhārgava
12. gādhiḥ uvāca bhārgava candraraśmiprakāśānām
vātarahṃhasām ekataḥ śyāmakarṇānām hayānām sahasram dehi
12. Gādhi said: "O Bhārgava (Ṛcīka), give me a thousand horses that shine like moonbeams, are as swift as the wind, and have one black ear."
भीष्म उवाच ।
ततः स भृगुशार्दूलश्च्यवनस्यात्मजः प्रभुः ।
अब्रवीद्वरुणं देवमादित्यं पतिमम्भसाम् ॥१३॥
13. bhīṣma uvāca ,
tataḥ sa bhṛguśārdūlaścyavanasyātmajaḥ prabhuḥ ,
abravīdvaruṇaṁ devamādityaṁ patimambhasām.
13. bhīṣmaḥ uvāca tataḥ saḥ bhṛguśārdūlaḥ cyavanasya ātmajaḥ
prabhuḥ abravīt varuṇam devam ādityam patim ambhasām
13. bhīṣmaḥ uvāca tataḥ saḥ bhṛguśārdūlaḥ cyavanasya ātmajaḥ
prabhuḥ devam ādityam ambhasām patim varuṇam abravīt
13. Bhīṣma said: "Then he, that tiger among the Bhṛgus, the powerful son of Cyavana, spoke to Varuṇa, the god who is a son of Aditi and the lord of the waters."
एकतः श्यामकर्णानां हयानां चन्द्रवर्चसाम् ।
सहस्रं वातवेगानां भिक्षे त्वां देवसत्तम ॥१४॥
14. ekataḥ śyāmakarṇānāṁ hayānāṁ candravarcasām ,
sahasraṁ vātavegānāṁ bhikṣe tvāṁ devasattama.
14. ekataḥ śyāmakarṇānām hayānām candravarcasām
sahasram vātavegānām bhikṣe tvām devasattama
14. devasattama aham tvām ekataḥ śyāmakarṇānām
candravarcasām vātavegānām hayānām sahasram bhikṣe
14. "O best of gods, I beg you for a thousand horses that have one black ear, possess the splendor of the moon, and are swift as the wind."
तथेति वरुणो देव आदित्यो भृगुसत्तमम् ।
उवाच यत्र ते छन्दस्तत्रोत्थास्यन्ति वाजिनः ॥१५॥
15. tatheti varuṇo deva ādityo bhṛgusattamam ,
uvāca yatra te chandastatrotthāsyanti vājinaḥ.
15. tathā iti varuṇaḥ devaḥ ādityaḥ bhṛgusattamam
uvāca yatra te chandaḥ tatra utthāsyanti vājinaḥ
15. varuṇaḥ devaḥ ādityaḥ tathā iti bhṛgusattamam
uvāca yatra te chandaḥ tatra vājinaḥ utthāsyanti
15. "So be it," said Varuna, the divine Āditya, to the foremost of the Bhrigus. "Wherever you desire, there horses will appear."
ध्यातमात्रे ऋचीकेन हयानां चन्द्रवर्चसाम् ।
गङ्गाजलात्समुत्तस्थौ सहस्रं विपुलौजसाम् ॥१६॥
16. dhyātamātre ṛcīkena hayānāṁ candravarcasām ,
gaṅgājalātsamuttasthau sahasraṁ vipulaujasām.
16. dhyātamātre ṛcīkena hayānām candravarcasām
gaṅgājalāt samuttasthau sahasram vipulaujasām
16. ṛcīkena dhyātamātre candravarcasām vipulaujasām

16. As soon as Ṛcīka thought of them, a thousand horses, radiant like the moon and possessing immense power, arose from the waters of the Gaṅgā.
अदूरे कन्यकुब्जस्य गङ्गायास्तीरमुत्तमम् ।
अश्वतीर्थं तदद्यापि मानवाः परिचक्षते ॥१७॥
17. adūre kanyakubjasya gaṅgāyāstīramuttamam ,
aśvatīrthaṁ tadadyāpi mānavāḥ paricakṣate.
17. adūre kānyakubjasya gaṅgāyāḥ tīram uttamam
aśvatīrtham tat adyāpi mānavāḥ paricakṣate
17. kānyakubjasya adūre gaṅgāyāḥ uttamam tīram
tat aśvatīrtham adyāpi mānavāḥ paricakṣate
17. Near Kānyakubja, on an excellent bank of the Gaṅgā, that place is still called "Aśvatīrtha" (Horse Ford) by people even today.
तत्तदा गाधये तात सहस्रं वाजिनां शुभम् ।
ऋचीकः प्रददौ प्रीतः शुल्कार्थं जपतां वरः ॥१८॥
18. tattadā gādhaye tāta sahasraṁ vājināṁ śubham ,
ṛcīkaḥ pradadau prītaḥ śulkārthaṁ japatāṁ varaḥ.
18. tat tadā gādhaye tāta sahasram vājinām śubham
ṛcīkaḥ pradadau prītaḥ śulkārtham japatām varaḥ
18. tāta tadā prītaḥ japatām varaḥ ṛcīkaḥ gādhaye
śulkārtham tat śubham vājinām sahasram pradadau
18. Then, dear son, Ṛcīka, pleased and foremost among those who recite sacred texts, gave those thousand beautiful horses to Gādhi as a bride-price.
ततः स विस्मितो राजा गाधिः शापभयेन च ।
ददौ तां समलंकृत्य कन्यां भृगुसुताय वै ॥१९॥
19. tataḥ sa vismito rājā gādhiḥ śāpabhayena ca ,
dadau tāṁ samalaṁkṛtya kanyāṁ bhṛgusutāya vai.
19. tataḥ saḥ vismitaḥ rājā gādhiḥ śāpabhayena ca
dadau tām samalaṅkṛtya kanyām bhṛgusutāya vai
19. tataḥ saḥ vismitaḥ rājā gādhiḥ śāpabhayena ca
kanyām samalaṅkṛtya tām bhṛgusutāya dadau vai
19. Then, astonished and fearing a curse, King Gadhi adorned his daughter and gave her to the son of Bhṛgu.
जग्राह पाणिं विधिना तस्य ब्रह्मर्षिसत्तमः ।
सा च तं पतिमासाद्य परं हर्षमवाप ह ॥२०॥
20. jagrāha pāṇiṁ vidhinā tasya brahmarṣisattamaḥ ,
sā ca taṁ patimāsādya paraṁ harṣamavāpa ha.
20. jagrāha pāṇim vidhinā tasya brahmarṣisattamaḥ
sā ca tam patim āsādya param harṣam avāpa ha
20. brahmarṣisattamaḥ tasya pāṇim vidhinā jagrāha
ca sā tam patim āsādya param harṣam avāpa ha
20. That foremost Brahmin sage accepted her hand according to custom. And she, having obtained him as a husband, attained great joy.
स तुतोष च विप्रर्षिस्तस्या वृत्तेन भारत ।
छन्दयामास चैवैनां वरेण वरवर्णिनीम् ॥२१॥
21. sa tutoṣa ca viprarṣistasyā vṛttena bhārata ,
chandayāmāsa caivaināṁ vareṇa varavarṇinīm.
21. saḥ tutoṣa ca viprarṣiḥ tasyāḥ vṛttena bhārata
chandayāmāsa ca eva enām vareṇa varavarṇinīm
21. bhārata saḥ viprarṣiḥ tasyāḥ vṛttena tutoṣa ca
ca eva enām varavarṇinīm vareṇa chandayāmāsa
21. That Brahmin sage was pleased by her conduct, O Bhārata. He then offered her, the beautiful lady, a boon.
मात्रे तत्सर्वमाचख्यौ सा कन्या राजसत्तमम् ।
अथ तामब्रवीन्माता सुतां किंचिदवाङ्मुखीम् ॥२२॥
22. mātre tatsarvamācakhyau sā kanyā rājasattamam ,
atha tāmabravīnmātā sutāṁ kiṁcidavāṅmukhīm.
22. mātre tat sarvam ācakhyau sā kanyā rājasattamam
atha tām abravīt mātā sutām kiñcit avāṅmukhīm
22. rājasattamam sā kanyā tat sarvam mātre ācakhyau
atha mātā kiñcit avāṅmukhīm tām sutām abravīt
22. That daughter reported all that to her mother, O best of kings. Then, the mother spoke to her daughter, who was slightly downcast.
ममापि पुत्रि भर्ता ते प्रसादं कर्तुमर्हति ।
अपत्यस्य प्रदानेन समर्थः स महातपाः ॥२३॥
23. mamāpi putri bhartā te prasādaṁ kartumarhati ,
apatyasya pradānena samarthaḥ sa mahātapāḥ.
23. mama api putri bhartā te prasādam kartum arhati
apatyasya pradānena samarthaḥ saḥ mahātapāḥ
23. O daughter, your husband should also show his favor. That great ascetic is capable of granting offspring.
ततः सा त्वरितं गत्वा तत्सर्वं प्रत्यवेदयत् ।
मातुश्चिकीर्षितं राजन्नृचीकस्तामथाब्रवीत् ॥२४॥
24. tataḥ sā tvaritaṁ gatvā tatsarvaṁ pratyavedayat ,
mātuścikīrṣitaṁ rājannṛcīkastāmathābravīt.
24. tataḥ sā tvaritam gatvā tat sarvam prati avedayat
mātuḥ cikīrṣitam rājan ṛcīkaḥ tām atha abravīt
24. Then, having gone quickly, she reported all that (her) mother's intention, O king. Thereupon, Ṛcīka spoke to her.
गुणवन्तमपत्यं वै त्वं च सा जनयिष्यथः ।
जनन्यास्तव कल्याणि मा भूद्वै प्रणयोऽन्यथा ॥२५॥
25. guṇavantamapatyaṁ vai tvaṁ ca sā janayiṣyathaḥ ,
jananyāstava kalyāṇi mā bhūdvai praṇayo'nyathā.
25. guṇavantam apatyam vai tvam ca sā janayiṣyathaḥ
jananyāḥ tava kalyāṇi mā bhūt vai praṇayaḥ anyathā
25. Indeed, both you and she shall give birth to a virtuous child. O auspicious one, let your mother's affection not be otherwise.
तव चैव गुणश्लाघी पुत्र उत्पत्स्यते शुभे ।
अस्मद्वंशकरः श्रीमांस्तव भ्राता च वंशकृत् ॥२६॥
26. tava caiva guṇaślāghī putra utpatsyate śubhe ,
asmadvaṁśakaraḥ śrīmāṁstava bhrātā ca vaṁśakṛt.
26. tava ca eva guṇaślāghī putraḥ utpatsyate śubhe
asmat vaṃśakaraḥ śrīmān tava bhrātā ca vaṃśakṛt
26. And indeed, O auspicious one, a glorious son will be born to you, one who will praise your good qualities and continue our lineage. Your brother, too, will be a progenitor of his lineage.
ऋतुस्नाता च साश्वत्थं त्वं च वृक्षमुदुम्बरम् ।
परिष्वजेथाः कल्याणि तत इष्टमवाप्स्यथः ॥२७॥
27. ṛtusnātā ca sāśvatthaṁ tvaṁ ca vṛkṣamudumbaram ,
pariṣvajethāḥ kalyāṇi tata iṣṭamavāpsyathaḥ.
27. ṛtusnātā ca sā aśvattham tvaṃ ca vṛkṣam udumbaram
pariṣvaje-ethāḥ kalyāṇi tataḥ iṣṭam avāpsyathāḥ
27. kalyāṇi,
ṛtusnātā tvam ca udumbaram vṛkṣam sā ca aśvattham pariṣvaje-ethāḥ; tataḥ iṣṭam avāpsyathāḥ
27. O auspicious one, after your ritual bath (ṛtusnātā), you should embrace the Udumbara tree, and she (your mother) should embrace the Ashvattha tree. Thereafter, you both will obtain your desired outcome.
चरुद्वयमिदं चैव मन्त्रपूतं शुचिस्मिते ।
त्वं च सा चोपयुञ्जीथां ततः पुत्राववाप्स्यथः ॥२८॥
28. carudvayamidaṁ caiva mantrapūtaṁ śucismite ,
tvaṁ ca sā copayuñjīthāṁ tataḥ putrāvavāpsyathaḥ.
28. carudvayam idam ca eva mantrapūtam śucismite tvam
ca sā ca upayuñjīthām tataḥ putrau avāpsyathāḥ
28. śucismite,
mantrapūtam idam carudvayam tvam ca sā ca upayuñjīthām,
tataḥ putrau avāpsyathāḥ
28. O pure-smiling one, you and she should consume these two portions of sacrificial food (caru), which have been purified by sacred chants. Thereafter, you both will obtain two sons.
ततः सत्यवती हृष्टा मातरं प्रत्यभाषत ।
यदृचीकेन कथितं तच्चाचख्यौ चरुद्वयम् ॥२९॥
29. tataḥ satyavatī hṛṣṭā mātaraṁ pratyabhāṣata ,
yadṛcīkena kathitaṁ taccācakhyau carudvayam.
29. tataḥ satyavatī hṛṣṭā mātaram prati abhāṣata
yat ṛcīkena kathitam tat ca ācakhyau carudvayam
29. tataḥ,
hṛṣṭā satyavatī mātaram pratyabhāṣata ca yat ṛcīkena kathitam tat carudvayam ācakhyau
29. Then, delighted, Satyavati spoke to her mother and recounted what had been told by Ṛcīka, specifically concerning the two portions of sacrificial food (caru).
तामुवाच ततो माता सुतां सत्यवतीं तदा ।
पुत्रि मूर्ध्ना प्रपन्नायाः कुरुष्व वचनं मम ॥३०॥
30. tāmuvāca tato mātā sutāṁ satyavatīṁ tadā ,
putri mūrdhnā prapannāyāḥ kuruṣva vacanaṁ mama.
30. tām uvāca tataḥ mātā sutām satyavatīm tadā
putri mūrdhnā prapannāyāḥ kuruṣva vacanam mama
30. tadā tataḥ mātā tām sutām satyavatīm uvāca: "putri,
mūrdhnā prapannāyāḥ mama vacanam kuruṣva.
"
30. Then the mother said to her daughter Satyavati: 'O daughter, you who have humbly approached, accept my command with bowed head (mūrdhnā).'
भर्त्रा य एष दत्तस्ते चरुर्मन्त्रपुरस्कृतः ।
एतं प्रयच्छ मह्यं त्वं मदीयं त्वं गृहाण च ॥३१॥
31. bhartrā ya eṣa dattaste carurmantrapuraskṛtaḥ ,
etaṁ prayaccha mahyaṁ tvaṁ madīyaṁ tvaṁ gṛhāṇa ca.
31. bhartrā yaḥ eṣaḥ dattaḥ te caruḥ mantrapuraskṛtaḥ
etam prayaccha mahyam tvam madīyam tvam gṛhāṇa ca
31. tvam mahyam etam caruḥ prayaccha yaḥ eṣaḥ te bhartrā
mantrapuraskṛtaḥ dattaḥ tvam ca madīyam gṛhāṇa
31. Please give me this oblation (caru) that your husband has given you, consecrated with sacred utterances (mantras), and you take mine.
व्यत्यासं वृक्षयोश्चापि करवाव शुचिस्मिते ।
यदि प्रमाणं वचनं मम मातुरनिन्दिते ॥३२॥
32. vyatyāsaṁ vṛkṣayoścāpi karavāva śucismite ,
yadi pramāṇaṁ vacanaṁ mama māturanindite.
32. vyatyāsam vṛkṣayoḥ ca api karavāva śucismite
yadi pramāṇam vacanam mama mātuḥ anindite
32. śucismite anindite yadi mama mātuḥ vacanam
pramāṇam vṛkṣayoḥ vyatyāsam ca api karavāva
32. O pure-smiling one, let us also exchange our trees if my mother's word is to be considered authoritative, O blameless one.
व्यक्तं भगवता चात्र कृतमेवं भविष्यति ।
ततो मे त्वच्चरौ भावः पादपे च सुमध्यमे ।
कथं विशिष्टो भ्राता ते भवेदित्येव चिन्तय ॥३३॥
33. vyaktaṁ bhagavatā cātra kṛtamevaṁ bhaviṣyati ,
tato me tvaccarau bhāvaḥ pādape ca sumadhyame ,
kathaṁ viśiṣṭo bhrātā te bhavedityeva cintaya.
33. vyaktam bhagavatā ca atra kṛtam evam
bhaviṣyati tataḥ me tvaccarau bhāvaḥ
pādape ca sumadhyame katham
viśiṣṭaḥ bhrātā te bhavet iti eva cintaya
33. atra vyaktam bhagavatā kṛtam evam
bhaviṣyati tataḥ sumadhyame me bhāvaḥ
tvaccarau pādape ca katham te bhrātā
viśiṣṭaḥ bhavet iti eva cintaya
33. Clearly, the revered one (Bhagavān) has ordained this, and it will happen this way. Therefore, O slender-waisted one, my inclination is towards your oblation (caru) and the tree. Just think, how could your brother become distinguished (otherwise)?
तथा च कृतवत्यौ ते माता सत्यवती च सा ।
अथ गर्भावनुप्राप्ते उभे ते वै युधिष्ठिर ॥३४॥
34. tathā ca kṛtavatyau te mātā satyavatī ca sā ,
atha garbhāvanuprāpte ubhe te vai yudhiṣṭhira.

atha garbhau anuprāpte ubhe te vai yudhiṣṭhira

34. And thus, Satyavati and her (own) mother, both having done as agreed, then, O Yudhiṣṭhira, both of them indeed became pregnant.
दृष्ट्वा गर्भमनुप्राप्तां भार्यां स च महानृषिः ।
उवाच तां सत्यवतीं दुर्मना भृगुसत्तमः ॥३५॥
35. dṛṣṭvā garbhamanuprāptāṁ bhāryāṁ sa ca mahānṛṣiḥ ,
uvāca tāṁ satyavatīṁ durmanā bhṛgusattamaḥ.
35. dṛṣṭvā garbham anuprāptām bhāryām saḥ ca mahānṛṣiḥ
uvāca tām satyavatīm durmanāḥ bhṛgusattamaḥ
35. saḥ ca mahānṛṣiḥ bhṛgusattamaḥ durmanāḥ garbham
anuprāptām bhāryām satyavatīm dṛṣṭvā tām uvāca
35. And that great sage, the foremost of the Bhṛgus, seeing his wife Satyavatī had become pregnant, spoke to her with a heavy heart.
व्यत्यासेनोपयुक्तस्ते चरुर्व्यक्तं भविष्यति ।
व्यत्यासः पादपे चापि सुव्यक्तं ते कृतः शुभे ॥३६॥
36. vyatyāsenopayuktaste carurvyaktaṁ bhaviṣyati ,
vyatyāsaḥ pādape cāpi suvyaktaṁ te kṛtaḥ śubhe.
36. vyatyāsena upayuktaḥ te caruḥ vyaktam bhaviṣyati
vyatyāsaḥ pādapē ca api suvyaktam te kṛtaḥ śubhē
36. śubhē te caruḥ vyatyāsena upayuktaḥ vyaktam
bhaviṣyati ca pādapē vyatyāsaḥ api te suvyaktam kṛtaḥ
36. It is clear that you consumed the oblation (caru) by mistake. And, O auspicious one, it is also very clear that you made a mistake with the tree.
मया हि विश्वं यद्ब्रह्म त्वच्चरौ संनिवेशितम् ।
क्षत्रवीर्यं च सकलं चरौ तस्या निवेशितम् ॥३७॥
37. mayā hi viśvaṁ yadbrahma tvaccarau saṁniveśitam ,
kṣatravīryaṁ ca sakalaṁ carau tasyā niveśitam.
37. mayā hi viśvam yat brahma tvaccarau saṃniveśitam
kṣatravīryam ca sakalam carau tasyāḥ niveśitam
37. hi mayā yat viśvam brahma tvaccarau saṃniveśitam
ca sakalam kṣatravīryam tasyāḥ carau niveśitam
37. Indeed, I placed all the universal essence (brahman) in your oblation, and the full warrior's valor was placed in her oblation.
त्रिलोकविख्यातगुणं त्वं विप्रं जनयिष्यसि ।
सा च क्षत्रं विशिष्टं वै तत एतत्कृतं मया ॥३८॥
38. trilokavikhyātaguṇaṁ tvaṁ vipraṁ janayiṣyasi ,
sā ca kṣatraṁ viśiṣṭaṁ vai tata etatkṛtaṁ mayā.
38. trilokavikhyātaguṇam tvam vipram janayiṣyasi sā
ca kṣatram viśiṣṭam vai tataḥ etat kṛtam mayā
38. tvam trilokavikhyātaguṇam vipram janayiṣyasi ca
sā vai viśiṣṭam kṣatram tataḥ mayā etat kṛtam
38. You will give birth to a brāhmaṇa renowned for his qualities throughout the three worlds. And she (your mother) will give birth to a truly distinguished warrior. This is why I did what I did.
व्यत्यासस्तु कृतो यस्मात्त्वया मात्रा तथैव च ।
तस्मात्सा ब्राह्मणश्रेष्ठं माता ते जनयिष्यति ॥३९॥
39. vyatyāsastu kṛto yasmāttvayā mātrā tathaiva ca ,
tasmātsā brāhmaṇaśreṣṭhaṁ mātā te janayiṣyati.
39. vyatyāsaḥ tu kṛtaḥ yasmāt tvayā mātrā tathā eva
ca tasmāt sā brāhmaṇaśreṣṭham mātā te janayiṣyati
39. yasmāt tvayā mātrā ca tathā eva vyatyāsaḥ kṛtaḥ,
tasmāt sā te mātā brāhmaṇaśreṣṭham janayiṣyati
39. Due to the exchange (vyatyāsa) made by you and your mother, your mother will give birth to an excellent brahmin.
क्षत्रियं तूग्रकर्माणं त्वं भद्रे जनयिष्यसि ।
न हि ते तत्कृतं साधु मातृस्नेहेन भामिनि ॥४०॥
40. kṣatriyaṁ tūgrakarmāṇaṁ tvaṁ bhadre janayiṣyasi ,
na hi te tatkṛtaṁ sādhu mātṛsnehena bhāmini.
40. kṣatriyam tu ugrakarmāṇam tvam bhadre janayiṣyasi
na hi te tat kṛtam sādhu mātṛsnehena bhāmini
40. bhadre tvam tu ugrakarmāṇam kṣatriyam janayiṣyasi
bhāmini te tat kṛtam mātṛsnehena sādhu na hi
40. But you, O blessed lady, will give birth to a warrior (kṣatriya) of fierce deeds. Indeed, O passionate lady, that act performed by you, motivated by maternal affection, was not proper.
सा श्रुत्वा शोकसंतप्ता पपात वरवर्णिनी ।
भूमौ सत्यवती राजंश्छिन्नेव रुचिरा लता ॥४१॥
41. sā śrutvā śokasaṁtaptā papāta varavarṇinī ,
bhūmau satyavatī rājaṁśchinneva rucirā latā.

bhūmau satyavatī rājan chinnā iva rucirā latā

41. Having heard this, that beautiful lady, Satyavatī, overcome with grief, fell to the ground, O King, just like a lovely creeper that has been cut.
प्रतिलभ्य च सा संज्ञां शिरसा प्रणिपत्य च ।
उवाच भार्या भर्तारं गाधेयी ब्राह्मणर्षभम् ॥४२॥
42. pratilabhya ca sā saṁjñāṁ śirasā praṇipatya ca ,
uvāca bhāryā bhartāraṁ gādheyī brāhmaṇarṣabham.
42. pratilabhyá ca sā saṃjñām śirasā praṇipatya ca
uvāca bhāryā bhartāram gādheyī brāhmaṇarṣabham
42. sā ca saṃjñām pratilabhya ca śirasā praṇipatya

42. Having regained her consciousness and bowed down with her head, Gādheyī, the wife, then spoke to her husband, the eminent brahmin (brāhmaṇarṣabha).
प्रसादयन्त्यां भार्यायां मयि ब्रह्मविदां वर ।
प्रसादं कुरु विप्रर्षे न मे स्यात्क्षत्रियः सुतः ॥४३॥
43. prasādayantyāṁ bhāryāyāṁ mayi brahmavidāṁ vara ,
prasādaṁ kuru viprarṣe na me syātkṣatriyaḥ sutaḥ.
43. prasādayantyām bhāryāyām mayi brahmavidām vara
prasādam kuru viprarṣe na me syāt kṣatriyaḥ sutaḥ
43. brahmavidām vara viprarṣe mayi bhāryāyām prasādayantyām

43. O best among those who know the Absolute (brahman), when my wife was propitiating me, O sage (viprarṣe), please grant your favor. May I not have a warrior (kṣatriya) son.
कामं ममोग्रकर्मा वै पौत्रो भवितुमर्हति ।
न तु मे स्यात्सुतो ब्रह्मन्नेष मे दीयतां वरः ॥४४॥
44. kāmaṁ mamograkarmā vai pautro bhavitumarhati ,
na tu me syātsuto brahmanneṣa me dīyatāṁ varaḥ.
44. kāmam mama ugrakarmā vai pautraḥ bhavitum arhati
na tu me syāt sutaḥ brahman eṣaḥ me dīyatām varaḥ
44. kāmam mama pautraḥ ugrakarmā vai bhavitum arhati
tu me sutaḥ na syāt brahman eṣaḥ varaḥ me dīyatām
44. Indeed, my grandson may well be of fierce deeds, but let me not have such a son, O Brahmin. May this boon be granted to me.
एवमस्त्विति होवाच स्वां भार्यां सुमहातपाः ।
ततः सा जनयामास जमदग्निं सुतं शुभम् ॥४५॥
45. evamastviti hovāca svāṁ bhāryāṁ sumahātapāḥ ,
tataḥ sā janayāmāsa jamadagniṁ sutaṁ śubham.
45. evam astu iti ha uvāca svām bhāryām sumahātapāḥ
tataḥ sā janayāmāsa jamadagnim sutam śubham
45. evam astu iti ha sumahātapāḥ svām bhāryām uvāca
tataḥ sā śubham sutam jamadagnim janayāmāsa
45. 'So be it,' said the one of great spiritual austerity (tapas) to his wife. Then she gave birth to an auspicious son, Jamadagni.
विश्वामित्रं चाजनयद्गाधेर्भार्या यशस्विनी ।
ऋषेः प्रभावाद्राजेन्द्र ब्रह्मर्षिं ब्रह्मवादिनम् ॥४६॥
46. viśvāmitraṁ cājanayadgādherbhāryā yaśasvinī ,
ṛṣeḥ prabhāvādrājendra brahmarṣiṁ brahmavādinam.
46. viśvāmitram ca ajanayat gādheḥ bhāryā yaśasvinī
ṛṣeḥ prabhāvāt rājendra brahmarṣim brahmavādinam
46. rājendra ca gādheḥ yaśasvinī bhāryā ṛṣeḥ prabhāvāt
brahmarṣim brahmavādinam viśvāmitram ajanayat
46. And Gādhi's renowned wife, by the power of the sage, gave birth to Viśvāmitra, a royal sage who expounded the knowledge of the Absolute (brahman), O best of kings.
ततो ब्राह्मणतां यातो विश्वामित्रो महातपाः ।
क्षत्रियः सोऽप्यथ तथा ब्रह्मवंशस्य कारकः ॥४७॥
47. tato brāhmaṇatāṁ yāto viśvāmitro mahātapāḥ ,
kṣatriyaḥ so'pyatha tathā brahmavaṁśasya kārakaḥ.
47. tataḥ brāhmaṇatām yātaḥ viśvāmitraḥ mahātapāḥ
kṣatriyaḥ saḥ api atha tathā brahmavaṃśasya kārakaḥ
47. mahātapāḥ viśvāmitraḥ tataḥ brāhmaṇatām yātaḥ.
saḥ kṣatriyaḥ api atha tathā brahmavaṃśasya kārakaḥ
47. Then Viśvāmitra, who had performed great austerities (tapas), attained the status of a brahmin. Although he was a kṣatriya, he thus similarly became the founder of a brahmin lineage.
तस्य पुत्रा महात्मानो ब्रह्मवंशविवर्धनाः ।
तपस्विनो ब्रह्मविदो गोत्रकर्तार एव च ॥४८॥
48. tasya putrā mahātmāno brahmavaṁśavivardhanāḥ ,
tapasvino brahmavido gotrakartāra eva ca.
48. tasya putrāḥ mahātmānaḥ brahmavaṃśavivardhanāḥ
tapasvinaḥ brahmavidaḥ gotrakartāraḥ eva ca
48. tasya mahātmānaḥ brahmavaṃśavivardhanāḥ putrāḥ
tapasvinaḥ brahmavidaḥ eva ca gotrakartāraḥ
48. His noble sons, who expanded the brahmin lineage, were ascetics (tapasvinaḥ), knowers of the ultimate reality (brahman), and indeed founders of clans.
मधुच्छन्दश्च भगवान्देवरातश्च वीर्यवान् ।
अक्षीणश्च शकुन्तश्च बभ्रुः कालपथस्तथा ॥४९॥
49. madhucchandaśca bhagavāndevarātaśca vīryavān ,
akṣīṇaśca śakuntaśca babhruḥ kālapathastathā.

akṣīṇaḥ ca śakuntaḥ ca babhruḥ kālapathaḥ tathā

49. And the revered Madhucchandas, and the mighty Devarāta, also Akṣīṇa, Śakunta, Babhru, and Kālapatha.
याज्ञवल्क्यश्च विख्यातस्तथा स्थूणो महाव्रतः ।
उलूको यमदूतश्च तथर्षिः सैन्धवायनः ॥५०॥
50. yājñavalkyaśca vikhyātastathā sthūṇo mahāvrataḥ ,
ulūko yamadūtaśca tatharṣiḥ saindhavāyanaḥ.
50. yājñavalkyaḥ ca vikhyātaḥ tathā sthūṇaḥ mahāvrataḥ
ulūkaḥ yamadūtaḥ ca tathā ṛṣiḥ saindhavāyanaḥ
50. vikhyātaḥ yājñavalkyaḥ ca tathā mahāvrataḥ sthūṇaḥ
ulūkaḥ yamadūtaḥ ca tathā ṛṣiḥ saindhavāyanaḥ
50. And the renowned Yājñavalkya, similarly Sthūṇa, who observed great vows. Ulūka, Yamadūta, and also the sage Saindhavāyana.
कर्णजङ्घश्च भगवान्गालवश्च महानृषिः ।
ऋषिर्वज्रस्तथाख्यातः शालङ्कायन एव च ॥५१॥
51. karṇajaṅghaśca bhagavāngālavaśca mahānṛṣiḥ ,
ṛṣirvajrastathākhyātaḥ śālaṅkāyana eva ca.
51. karṇajaṅghaḥ ca bhagavān gālavaḥ ca mahā ṛṣiḥ |
ṛṣiḥ vajraḥ tathā ākhyātaḥ śālaṅkāyanaḥ eva ca
51. bhagavān karṇajaṅghaḥ ca mahā ṛṣiḥ gālavaḥ ca
tathā ākhyātaḥ ṛṣiḥ vajraḥ eva ca śālaṅkāyanaḥ
51. And the venerable Karṇajaṅgha, and the great sage Gālava; similarly, the renowned sage Vajra, and also Śālaṅkāyana.
लालाट्यो नारदश्चैव तथा कूर्चमुखः स्मृतः ।
वादुलिर्मुसलश्चैव रक्षोग्रीवस्तथैव च ॥५२॥
52. lālāṭyo nāradaścaiva tathā kūrcamukhaḥ smṛtaḥ ,
vādulirmusalaścaiva rakṣogrīvastathaiva ca.
52. lālāṭyaḥ nāradaḥ ca eva tathā kūrcamukhaḥ smṛtaḥ
| vāduliḥ musalaḥ ca eva rakṣogrīvaḥ tathā eva ca

52. Lālāṭya, Nārada, and also Kūrcamukha are remembered; and Vāduli, Musala, and likewise Rakṣogrīva.
अङ्घ्रिको नैकभृच्चैव शिलायूपः सितः शुचिः ।
चक्रको मारुतन्तव्यो वातघ्नोऽथाश्वलायनः ॥५३॥
53. aṅghriko naikabhṛccaiva śilāyūpaḥ sitaḥ śuciḥ ,
cakrako mārutantavyo vātaghno'thāśvalāyanaḥ.
53. aṅghrikaḥ naikabhṛt ca eva śilāyūpaḥ sitaḥ śuciḥ |
cakrakaḥ mārutantavyaḥ vātaghnaḥ atha aśvalāyanaḥ

53. Aṅghrika, and also Naikabhṛt, Śilāyūpa, Sita, and Śuci; Cakraka, Mārutantavya, Vātaghna, and then Aśvalāyana.
श्यामायनोऽथ गार्ग्यश्च जाबालिः सुश्रुतस्तथा ।
कारीषिरथ संश्रुत्यः परपौरवतन्तवः ॥५४॥
54. śyāmāyano'tha gārgyaśca jābāliḥ suśrutastathā ,
kārīṣiratha saṁśrutyaḥ parapauravatantavaḥ.
54. śyāmāyanaḥ atha gārgyaḥ ca jābāliḥ suśrutaḥ tathā

54. Śyāmāyana, then Gārgya, and Jābāli, and similarly Suśruta; Kārīṣi, then Saṃśrutya, and Parapauravatantava.
महानृषिश्च कपिलस्तथर्षिस्तारकायनः ।
तथैव चोपगहनस्तथर्षिश्चार्जुनायनः ॥५५॥
55. mahānṛṣiśca kapilastatharṣistārakāyanaḥ ,
tathaiva copagahanastatharṣiścārjunāyanaḥ.
55. mahā-ṛṣiḥ ca kapilaḥ tathā ṛṣiḥ tārakāyanaḥ |
tathā eva ca upagahanaḥ tathā ṛṣiḥ ca arjunāyanaḥ
55. kapilaḥ mahā-ṛṣiḥ ca,
tathā tārakāyanaḥ ṛṣiḥ,
tathā eva ca upagahanaḥ,
tathā arjunāyanaḥ ṛṣiḥ ca.
55. The great sage Kapila, and similarly the sage Tarakayana, likewise Upagahana, and also the sage Arjunayana.
मार्गमित्रिर्हिरण्याक्षो जङ्घारिर्बभ्रुवाहनः ।
सूतिर्विभूतिः सूतश्च सुरङ्गश्च तथैव हि ॥५६॥
56. mārgamitrirhiraṇyākṣo jaṅghārirbabhruvāhanaḥ ,
sūtirvibhūtiḥ sūtaśca suraṅgaśca tathaiva hi.
56. mārgamitriḥ hiraṇyākṣaḥ jaṅghāriḥ babruvāhanaḥ |
sūtiḥ vibhūtiḥ sūtaḥ ca suraṅgaḥ ca tathā eva hi

56. Margamitri, Hiranyaksha, Janghari, and Babruvahana; Suti, Vibhuti, and Suta, and likewise Suranga.
आराद्धिर्नामयश्चैव चाम्पेयोज्जयनौ तथा ।
नवतन्तुर्बकनखः शयोनरतिरेव च ॥५७॥
57. ārāddhirnāmayaścaiva cāmpeyojjayanau tathā ,
navatanturbakanakhaḥ śayonaratireva ca.
57. ārāddhiḥ nāmayaḥ ca eva cāmpeya-ujjayana-u
tathā | navatantuḥ bakanakhaḥ śayonaratiḥ eva ca

57. Araddhi, and Namaya as well, and similarly Champeya and Ujjayana; Navatantu, Bakanakha, and also Shayonarati.
शयोरुहश्चारुमत्स्यः शिरीषी चाथ गार्दभिः ।
उज्जयोनिरदापेक्षी नारदी च महानृषिः ।
विश्वामित्रात्मजाः सर्वे मुनयो ब्रह्मवादिनः ॥५८॥
58. śayoruhaścārumatsyaḥ śirīṣī cātha gārdabhiḥ ,
ujjayoniradāpekṣī nāradī ca mahānṛṣiḥ ,
viśvāmitrātmajāḥ sarve munayo brahmavādinaḥ.
58. śayoruhaḥ ca cārumatsyaḥ śirīṣī ca
atha gārdabhiḥ | ujjayoniḥ adāpekṣī
nāradī ca mahā-ṛṣiḥ | viśvāmitra-ātmajāḥ

nāradī ca mahā-ṛṣiḥ.
sarve viśvāmitra-ātmajāḥ munayaḥ brahma-vādinaḥ.
58. Shayoruha, Charumatsya, and Shirishi, and then Gardabhi; Ujjayoni, Adapekshi, and Naradi, who was also a great sage. All these (muni)s, the sons of Vishvamitra, were expounders of (brahman).
तन्नैष क्षत्रियो राजन्विश्वामित्रो महातपाः ।
ऋचीकेनाहितं ब्रह्म परमेतद्युधिष्ठिर ॥५९॥
59. tannaiṣa kṣatriyo rājanviśvāmitro mahātapāḥ ,
ṛcīkenāhitaṁ brahma parametadyudhiṣṭhira.
59. tat na eṣaḥ kṣatriyaḥ rājan viśvāmitraḥ mahātapaḥ
ṛcīkena āhitam brahma param etad yudhiṣṭhira
59. rājan yudhiṣṭhira,
tat eṣaḥ mahātapaḥ viśvāmitraḥ kṣatriyaḥ na; etad param brahma ṛcīkena āhitam
59. O King (rājan), O Yudhiṣṭhira, this great ascetic Viśvāmitra is not merely a warrior (kṣatriya); rather, this supreme spiritual power (brahman) was established in him by Ṛcīka.
एतत्ते सर्वमाख्यातं तत्त्वेन भरतर्षभ ।
विश्वामित्रस्य वै जन्म सोमसूर्याग्नितेजसः ॥६०॥
60. etatte sarvamākhyātaṁ tattvena bharatarṣabha ,
viśvāmitrasya vai janma somasūryāgnitejasaḥ.
60. etat te sarvam ākhyātam tattvena bharatarṣabha
| viśvāmitrasya vai janma somasūryāgnitejasaḥ
60. bharatarṣabha,
etat sarvam te tattvena ākhyātam; vai viśvāmitrasya janma somasūryāgnitejasaḥ
60. O best among Bharatas (bharatarṣabha), all this has been truly explained to you in essence, concerning the birth of Viśvāmitra, who possesses the splendor of the moon, sun, and fire.
यत्र यत्र च संदेहो भूयस्ते राजसत्तम ।
तत्र तत्र च मां ब्रूहि च्छेत्तास्मि तव संशयान् ॥६१॥
61. yatra yatra ca saṁdeho bhūyaste rājasattama ,
tatra tatra ca māṁ brūhi cchettāsmi tava saṁśayān.
61. yatra yatra ca sandehaḥ bhūyaḥ te rājasattama |
tatra tatra ca mām brūhi chettā asmi tava saṃśayān
61. rājasattama,
yatra yatra ca te bhūyaḥ sandehaḥ,
tatra tatra ca mām brūhi; tava saṃśayān chettā asmi
61. O best among kings (rājasattama), wherever you have further doubts, you must tell me, and I shall certainly dispel your uncertainties.
