अर्जुन उवाच ।
उक्तं युधिष्ठिरेणैव यावद्वाच्यं जनार्दन ।
तव वाक्यं तु मे श्रुत्वा प्रतिभाति परंतप ॥१॥
1. arjuna uvāca ,
uktaṁ yudhiṣṭhireṇaiva yāvadvācyaṁ janārdana ,
tava vākyaṁ tu me śrutvā pratibhāti paraṁtapa.

janārdana tava vākyam tu me śrutvā pratibhāti paraṃtapa
1. Arjuna said: O Janārdana, whatever needed to be said has already been uttered by Yudhiṣṭhira. However, upon hearing your words, O tormentor of foes, it appears to me that...
नैव प्रशममत्र त्वं मन्यसे सुकरं प्रभो ।
लोभाद्वा धृतराष्ट्रस्य दैन्याद्वा समुपस्थितात् ॥२॥
2. naiva praśamamatra tvaṁ manyase sukaraṁ prabho ,
lobhādvā dhṛtarāṣṭrasya dainyādvā samupasthitāt.
2. na eva praśamam atra tvam manyase sukaram prabho
lobhāt vā dhṛtarāṣṭrasya dainyāt vā samupasthitāt
2. O Lord, you certainly do not consider peace (praśama) to be easily achievable in this situation, either because of Dhṛtarāṣṭra's greed or because of the misery that has arisen.
अफलं मन्यसे चापि पुरुषस्य पराक्रमम् ।
न चान्तरेण कर्माणि पौरुषेण फलोदयः ॥३॥
3. aphalaṁ manyase cāpi puruṣasya parākramam ,
na cāntareṇa karmāṇi pauruṣeṇa phalodayaḥ.
3. aphalam manyase ca api puruṣasya parākramam
na ca antareṇa karmāṇi pauruṣeṇa phalodayaḥ
3. And you also consider a man's (puruṣa) valor to be fruitless. Moreover, no success (phalodaya) can arise from mere human effort (pauruṣa) without actual actions (karma).
तदिदं भाषितं वाक्यं तथा च न तथैव च ।
न चैतदेवं द्रष्टव्यमसाध्यमिति किंचन ॥४॥
4. tadidaṁ bhāṣitaṁ vākyaṁ tathā ca na tathaiva ca ,
na caitadevaṁ draṣṭavyamasādhyamiti kiṁcana.
4. tat idam bhāṣitam vākyam tathā ca na tathā eva ca
na ca etat evam draṣṭavyam asādhyam iti kiṃcana
4. Therefore, this speech of yours is both 'so' and 'not so.' And this matter should not be considered impossible (asādhya) at all.
किं चैतन्मन्यसे कृच्छ्रमस्माकं पापमादितः ।
कुर्वन्ति तेषां कर्माणि येषां नास्ति फलोदयः ॥५॥
5. kiṁ caitanmanyase kṛcchramasmākaṁ pāpamāditaḥ ,
kurvanti teṣāṁ karmāṇi yeṣāṁ nāsti phalodayaḥ.
5. kim ca etat manyase kṛcchram asmākam pāpam āditaḥ
| kurvanti teṣām karmāṇi yeṣām na asti phalodayaḥ
5. And what do you consider this hardship and original sin to be for us? (It is like how) they perform actions (karma) for those from whom no result (phala) arises.
संपाद्यमानं सम्यक्च स्यात्कर्म सफलं प्रभो ।
स तथा कृष्ण वर्तस्व यथा शर्म भवेत्परैः ॥६॥
6. saṁpādyamānaṁ samyakca syātkarma saphalaṁ prabho ,
sa tathā kṛṣṇa vartasva yathā śarma bhavetparaiḥ.
6. sampādyamānam samyak ca syāt karma saphalam prabho
| sa tathā kṛṣṇa vartasva yathā śarma bhavet paraiḥ
6. O Lord, actions (karma) properly performed are indeed fruitful. Therefore, O Krishna, act in such a way that there may be well-being (śarma) for others.
पाण्डवानां कुरूणां च भवान्परमकः सुहृत् ।
सुराणामसुराणां च यथा वीर प्रजापतिः ॥७॥
7. pāṇḍavānāṁ kurūṇāṁ ca bhavānparamakaḥ suhṛt ,
surāṇāmasurāṇāṁ ca yathā vīra prajāpatiḥ.
7. pāṇḍavānām kurūṇām ca bhavān paramakaḥ suhṛt
| surāṇām asurāṇām ca yathā vīra prajāpatiḥ
7. You are the supreme friend of both the Pāṇḍavas and the Kurus, just as, O hero, Prajāpati is (the supreme friend) of both the gods (Suras) and the demons (Asuras).
कुरूणां पाण्डवानां च प्रतिपत्स्व निरामयम् ।
अस्मद्धितमनुष्ठातुं न मन्ये तव दुष्करम् ॥८॥
8. kurūṇāṁ pāṇḍavānāṁ ca pratipatsva nirāmayam ,
asmaddhitamanuṣṭhātuṁ na manye tava duṣkaram.
8. kurūṇām pāṇḍavānām ca pratipatsva nirāmayam |
asmaddhitam anuṣṭhātum na manye tava duṣkaram
8. Adopt a peaceful policy concerning both the Kurus and the Pāṇḍavas. I do not consider it difficult for you to achieve our welfare.
एवं चेत्कार्यतामेति कार्यं तव जनार्दन ।
गमनादेवमेव त्वं करिष्यसि न संशयः ॥९॥
9. evaṁ cetkāryatāmeti kāryaṁ tava janārdana ,
gamanādevameva tvaṁ kariṣyasi na saṁśayaḥ.
9. evam cet kāryatām eti kāryam tava janārdana
gamanāt evam eva tvam kariṣyasi na saṃśayaḥ
9. O Janardana, if your mission is to be accomplished in this way, then you will certainly achieve it simply by going; there is no doubt about it.
चिकीर्षितमथान्यत्ते तस्मिन्वीर दुरात्मनि ।
भविष्यति तथा सर्वं यथा तव चिकीर्षितम् ॥१०॥
10. cikīrṣitamathānyatte tasminvīra durātmani ,
bhaviṣyati tathā sarvaṁ yathā tava cikīrṣitam.
10. cikīrṣitam atha anyat te tasmin vīra durātmani
bhaviṣyati tathā sarvam yathā tava cikīrṣitam
10. O hero, whatever else you intend concerning that wicked person, everything will happen exactly as you desire.
शर्म तैः सह वा नोऽस्तु तव वा यच्चिकीर्षितम् ।
विचार्यमाणो यः कामस्तव कृष्ण स नो गुरुः ॥११॥
11. śarma taiḥ saha vā no'stu tava vā yaccikīrṣitam ,
vicāryamāṇo yaḥ kāmastava kṛṣṇa sa no guruḥ.
11. śarma taiḥ saha vā naḥ astu tava vā yat cikīrṣitam
vicāryamāṇaḥ yaḥ kāmaḥ tava kṛṣṇa sa naḥ guruḥ
11. Let there be welfare for them along with our welfare, or whatever you desire (cikīrṣitam). O Krishna, that desire (kāma) of yours, which is being contemplated, is our supreme guide (guru).
न स नार्हति दुष्टात्मा वधं ससुतबान्धवः ।
येन धर्मसुते दृष्ट्वा न सा श्रीरुपमर्षिता ॥१२॥
12. na sa nārhati duṣṭātmā vadhaṁ sasutabāndhavaḥ ,
yena dharmasute dṛṣṭvā na sā śrīrupamarṣitā.
12. na sa na arhati duṣṭātmā vadham sasutabāndhavaḥ
yena dharmasute dṛṣṭvā na sā śrīḥ upamarṣitā
12. That evil-minded person, along with his sons and relatives, certainly deserves death, because he could not tolerate the prosperity (śrī) of Dharmasuta (Yudhiṣṭhira) even after witnessing it.
यच्चाप्यपश्यतोपायं धर्मिष्ठं मधुसूदन ।
उपायेन नृशंसेन हृता दुर्द्यूतदेविना ॥१३॥
13. yaccāpyapaśyatopāyaṁ dharmiṣṭhaṁ madhusūdana ,
upāyena nṛśaṁsena hṛtā durdyūtadevinā.
13. yat ca api apaśyataḥ upāyam dharmīṣṭham
madhusūdana upāyena nṛśaṃsena hṛtā durdyūtadevinā
13. And moreover, O Madhusudana, what was seized by the wicked gambler through a cruel stratagem, was taken even from one who did not perceive any most righteous (dharma) method.
कथं हि पुरुषो जातः क्षत्रियेषु धनुर्धरः ।
समाहूतो निवर्तेत प्राणत्यागेऽप्युपस्थिते ॥१४॥
14. kathaṁ hi puruṣo jātaḥ kṣatriyeṣu dhanurdharaḥ ,
samāhūto nivarteta prāṇatyāge'pyupasthite.
14. katham hi puruṣaḥ jātaḥ kṣatriyeṣu dhanurdharaḥ
samāhūtaḥ nivarteta prāṇatyāge api upasthite
14. How indeed would a person (puruṣa) born among kṣatriyas, an archer, turn back when challenged, even when the sacrifice of life (prāṇa) is imminent?
अधर्मेण जितान्दृष्ट्वा वने प्रव्रजितांस्तथा ।
वध्यतां मम वार्ष्णेय निर्गतोऽसौ सुयोधनः ॥१५॥
15. adharmeṇa jitāndṛṣṭvā vane pravrajitāṁstathā ,
vadhyatāṁ mama vārṣṇeya nirgato'sau suyodhanaḥ.
15. adharmeṇa jitān dṛṣṭvā vane pravrajitān tathā
vadhyatām mama vārṣṇeya nirgataḥ asau suyodhanaḥ
15. Having seen them defeated by unrighteousness (adharma) and thus exiled to the forest, O Vārṣṇeya, let that Suyodhana, who has escaped, be killed by me.
न चैतदद्भुतं कृष्ण मित्रार्थे यच्चिकीर्षसि ।
क्रिया कथं नु मुख्या स्यान्मृदुना वेतरेण वा ॥१६॥
16. na caitadadbhutaṁ kṛṣṇa mitrārthe yaccikīrṣasi ,
kriyā kathaṁ nu mukhyā syānmṛdunā vetareṇa vā.
16. na ca etat adbhutam kṛṣṇa mitrārthe yat cikīrṣasi
kriyā katham nu mukhyā syāt mṛdunā vā itareṇa vā
16. And this is not surprising, O Krishna, what you intend to do for the sake of a friend. But how indeed could the primary action be accomplished, whether by gentle means or by severe means?
अथ वा मन्यसे ज्यायान्वधस्तेषामनन्तरम् ।
तदेव क्रियतामाशु न विचार्यमतस्त्वया ॥१७॥
17. atha vā manyase jyāyānvadhasteṣāmanantaram ,
tadeva kriyatāmāśu na vicāryamatastvayā.
17. atha vā manyase jyāyān vadhaḥ teṣām anantaram
tat eva kriyatām āśu na vicāryam ataḥ tvayā
17. Alternatively, if you consider their immediate killing to be the more appropriate course of action, then let that be done quickly. Therefore, there is nothing further to be deliberated upon by you.
जानासि हि यथा तेन द्रौपदी पापबुद्धिना ।
परिक्लिष्टा सभामध्ये तच्च तस्यापि मर्षितम् ॥१८॥
18. jānāsi hi yathā tena draupadī pāpabuddhinā ,
parikliṣṭā sabhāmadhye tacca tasyāpi marṣitam.
18. jānāsi hi yathā tena draupadī pāpabuddhinā
parikliṣṭā sabhāmadhye tat ca tasya api marṣitam
18. For you know how Draupadi was tormented in the midst of the assembly by that evil-minded one, and how even that (act) was tolerated by him (Yudhiṣṭhira).
स नाम सम्यग्वर्तेत पाण्डवेष्विति माधव ।
न मे संजायते बुद्धिर्बीजमुप्तमिवोषरे ॥१९॥
19. sa nāma samyagvarteta pāṇḍaveṣviti mādhava ,
na me saṁjāyate buddhirbījamuptamivoṣare.
19. sa nāma samyak varteta pāṇḍaveṣu iti mādhava
na me sañjāyate buddhiḥ bījam uptam iva ūṣare
19. O Mādhava (Krishna), the thought that he would indeed behave properly towards the Pāṇḍavas does not arise in me, just like a seed sown in barren soil (ūṣara) cannot sprout.
तस्माद्यन्मन्यसे युक्तं पाण्डवानां च यद्धितम् ।
तदाशु कुरु वार्ष्णेय यन्नः कार्यमनन्तरम् ॥२०॥
20. tasmādyanmanyase yuktaṁ pāṇḍavānāṁ ca yaddhitam ,
tadāśu kuru vārṣṇeya yannaḥ kāryamanantaram.
20. tasmāt yat manyase yuktam pāṇḍavānām ca yat hitam
tat āśu kuru vārṣṇeya yat naḥ kāryam anantaram
20. Therefore, O Vārṣṇeya (Krishna), quickly do whatever you deem appropriate and beneficial for the Pāṇḍavas; that is our immediate task.
