वासुदेव उवाच ।
एवमुक्ते तु भीष्मेण द्रोणेन विदुरेण च ।
गान्धार्या धृतराष्ट्रेण न च मन्दोऽन्वबुध्यत ॥१॥
1. vāsudeva uvāca ,
evamukte tu bhīṣmeṇa droṇena vidureṇa ca ,
gāndhāryā dhṛtarāṣṭreṇa na ca mando'nvabudhyata.
अवधूयोत्थितः क्रुद्धो रोषात्संरक्तलोचनः ।
अन्वद्रवन्त तं पश्चाद्राजानस्त्यक्तजीविताः ॥२॥
2. avadhūyotthitaḥ kruddho roṣātsaṁraktalocanaḥ ,
anvadravanta taṁ paścādrājānastyaktajīvitāḥ.
अज्ञापयच्च राज्ञस्तान्पार्थिवान्दुष्टचेतसः ।
प्रयाध्वं वै कुरुक्षेत्रं पुष्योऽद्येति पुनः पुनः ॥३॥
3. ajñāpayacca rājñastānpārthivānduṣṭacetasaḥ ,
prayādhvaṁ vai kurukṣetraṁ puṣyo'dyeti punaḥ punaḥ.
3. ajñāpayat ca rājñaḥ tān pārthivān duṣṭacetasaḥ
prayādhvam vai kurukṣetram puṣyaḥ adya iti punaḥ punaḥ
3. ca rājñaḥ tān duṣṭacetasaḥ pārthivān punaḥ punaḥ
iti adya puṣyaḥ kurukṣetram vai prayādhvam ajñāpayat
3. And he repeatedly commanded those kings, those wicked-minded rulers, saying, 'Indeed, go forth to Kurukṣetra! The Puṣya constellation is auspicious today!'
ततस्ते पृथिवीपालाः प्रययुः सहसैनिकाः ।
भीष्मं सेनापतिं कृत्वा संहृष्टाः कालचोदिताः ॥४॥
4. tataste pṛthivīpālāḥ prayayuḥ sahasainikāḥ ,
bhīṣmaṁ senāpatiṁ kṛtvā saṁhṛṣṭāḥ kālacoditāḥ.
4. tataḥ te pṛthivīpālāḥ prayayuḥ sahasainikāḥ
bhīṣmam senāpatim kṛtvā saṃhṛṣṭāḥ kālacoditāḥ
4. tataḥ te pṛthivīpālāḥ sahasainikāḥ bhīṣmam
senāpatim kṛtvā saṃhṛṣṭāḥ kālacoditāḥ prayayuḥ
4. Then, those protectors of the earth (kings), accompanied by their soldiers, departed, having made Bhishma their commander-in-chief. They were greatly delighted and impelled by fate.
अक्षौहिण्यो दशैका च पार्थिवानां समागताः ।
तासां प्रमुखतो भीष्मस्तालकेतुर्व्यरोचत ।
यदत्र युक्तं प्राप्तं च तद्विधत्स्व विशां पते ॥५॥
5. akṣauhiṇyo daśaikā ca pārthivānāṁ samāgatāḥ ,
tāsāṁ pramukhato bhīṣmastālaketurvyarocata ,
yadatra yuktaṁ prāptaṁ ca tadvidhatsva viśāṁ pate.
5. akṣauhiṇyaḥ daśa ekā ca pārthivānām
samāgatāḥ tāsām pramukhataḥ bhīṣmaḥ
tālaketuḥ vyarocata yat atra yuktam
prāptam ca tat vidhatsva viśām pate

5. Eleven akṣauhiṇī divisions of rulers had gathered. In front of them, Bhishma, whose banner bore the emblem of a palm tree, shone brightly. 'Whatever is fitting and appropriate here, O lord of the people, you should carry that out.'
उक्तं भीष्मेण यद्वाक्यं द्रोणेन विदुरेण च ।
गान्धार्या धृतराष्ट्रेण समक्षं मम भारत ।
एतत्ते कथितं राजन्यद्वृत्तं कुरुसंसदि ॥६॥
6. uktaṁ bhīṣmeṇa yadvākyaṁ droṇena vidureṇa ca ,
gāndhāryā dhṛtarāṣṭreṇa samakṣaṁ mama bhārata ,
etatte kathitaṁ rājanyadvṛttaṁ kurusaṁsadi.
6. uktam bhīṣmeṇa yat vākyam droṇena
vidureṇa ca gāndhāryā dhṛtarāṣṭreṇa
samakṣam mama bhārata etat te
kathitam rājan yat vṛttam kurusaṃsadi

6. Whatever was spoken by Bhishma, by Drona, and by Vidura, and by Gāndhārī, and by Dhṛtarāṣṭra, in my presence, O descendant of Bharata (Bhārata), I have now narrated to you, O king, all that transpired in the Kuru assembly.
साम आदौ प्रयुक्तं मे राजन्सौभ्रात्रमिच्छता ।
अभेदात्कुरुवंशस्य प्रजानां च विवृद्धये ॥७॥
7. sāma ādau prayuktaṁ me rājansaubhrātramicchatā ,
abhedātkuruvaṁśasya prajānāṁ ca vivṛddhaye.

abhedāt kuruvaṃśasya prajānām ca vivṛddhaye
7. rājan,

7. O King, I first employed the strategy of conciliation (sāma) because I desired brotherhood, aiming for the unity of the Kuru lineage and the prosperity of the people.
पुनर्भेदश्च मे युक्तो यदा साम न गृह्यते ।
कर्मानुकीर्तनं चैव देवमानुषसंहितम् ॥८॥
8. punarbhedaśca me yukto yadā sāma na gṛhyate ,
karmānukīrtanaṁ caiva devamānuṣasaṁhitam.
8. punaḥ bhedaḥ ca me yuktaḥ yadā sāma na gṛhyate
karma-anukīrtanam ca eva deva-mānuṣa-saṃhitam
8. yadā sāma na gṛhyate,
punaḥ me bhedaḥ ca yuktaḥ (abhūt).
deva-mānuṣa-saṃhitam karma-anukīrtanam ca eva.
8. However, division (bheda) became appropriate for me when conciliation (sāma) was not accepted. This included recounting deeds pertaining to both gods and humans.
यदा नाद्रियते वाक्यं सामपूर्वं सुयोधनः ।
तदा मया समानीय भेदिताः सर्वपार्थिवाः ॥९॥
9. yadā nādriyate vākyaṁ sāmapūrvaṁ suyodhanaḥ ,
tadā mayā samānīya bheditāḥ sarvapārthivāḥ.
9. yadā na ādriyate vākyam sāma-pūrvam suyodhanaḥ
tadā mayā samānīya bheditāḥ sarva-pārthivāḥ
9. yadā suyodhanaḥ sāma-pūrvam vākyam na ādriyate,
tadā mayā samānīya sarva-pārthivāḥ bheditāḥ.
9. When Suyodhana disregarded the words that began with conciliation (sāma), then I gathered all the kings and caused division (bheda) among them.
अद्भुतानि च घोराणि दारुणानि च भारत ।
अमानुषाणि कर्माणि दर्शितानि च मे विभो ॥१०॥
10. adbhutāni ca ghorāṇi dāruṇāni ca bhārata ,
amānuṣāṇi karmāṇi darśitāni ca me vibho.
10. adbhutāni ca ghorāṇi dāruṇāni ca bhārata
amānuṣāṇi karmāṇi darśitāni ca me vibho
10. bhārata,
vibho,
me adbhutāni ca ghorāṇi ca dāruṇāni ca amānuṣāṇi karmāṇi ca darśitāni.
10. O Bhārata, O Lord, I also displayed wondrous, dreadful, and terrible superhuman deeds (karma).
भर्त्सयित्वा तु राज्ञस्तांस्तृणीकृत्य सुयोधनम् ।
राधेयं भीषयित्वा च सौबलं च पुनः पुनः ॥११॥
11. bhartsayitvā tu rājñastāṁstṛṇīkṛtya suyodhanam ,
rādheyaṁ bhīṣayitvā ca saubalaṁ ca punaḥ punaḥ.
11. bhartsayitvā tu rājñaḥ tān tṛṇīkṛtya suyodhanam
rādheyam bhīṣayitvā ca saubalam ca punaḥ punaḥ
11. tu tān rājñaḥ bhartsayitvā,
suyodhanam tṛṇīkṛtya,
ca rādheyam ca saubalam punaḥ punaḥ bhīṣayitvā
11. I, having rebuked those kings, having disregarded Suyodhana, and having repeatedly frightened Karna (Rādheya) and Shakuni (Saubala),
न्यूनतां धार्तराष्ट्राणां निन्दां चैव पुनः पुनः ।
भेदयित्वा नृपान्सर्वान्वाग्भिर्मन्त्रेण चासकृत् ॥१२॥
12. nyūnatāṁ dhārtarāṣṭrāṇāṁ nindāṁ caiva punaḥ punaḥ ,
bhedayitvā nṛpānsarvānvāgbhirmantreṇa cāsakṛt.
12. nyūnatām dhārtarāṣṭrāṇām nindām ca eva punaḥ punaḥ
bhedayitvā nṛpān sarvān vāgbhiḥ mantreṇa ca asakṛt
12. ca eva punaḥ punaḥ dhārtarāṣṭrāṇām nyūnatām ca nindām,
sarvān nṛpān vāgbhiḥ ca mantreṇa asakṛt bhedayitvā
12. and having repeatedly highlighted the inferiority of Dhritarashtra's sons (Dhārtarāṣṭras) and censured them, frequently alienating all the kings through my words and counsel,
पुनः सामाभिसंयुक्तं संप्रदानमथाब्रुवम् ।
अभेदात्कुरुवंशस्य कार्ययोगात्तथैव च ॥१३॥
13. punaḥ sāmābhisaṁyuktaṁ saṁpradānamathābruvam ,
abhedātkuruvaṁśasya kāryayogāttathaiva ca.
13. punaḥ sāmābhisaṃyuktam sampradānam atha abruvam
abhedāt kurūvaṃśasya kāryayogāt tathā eva ca
13. atha punaḥ sāmābhisaṃyuktam sampradānam abruvam,
kurūvaṃśasya abhedāt ca tathā eva kāryayogāt
13. then again, I put forward a conciliatory proposal (sampradāna), speaking for the non-division (abheda) of the Kuru dynasty (Kurūvaṃśa) and also for the exigency of the matter.
ते बाला धृतराष्ट्रस्य भीष्मस्य विदुरस्य च ।
तिष्ठेयुः पाण्डवाः सर्वे हित्वा मानमधश्चराः ॥१४॥
14. te bālā dhṛtarāṣṭrasya bhīṣmasya vidurasya ca ,
tiṣṭheyuḥ pāṇḍavāḥ sarve hitvā mānamadhaścarāḥ.
14. te bālā dhṛtarāṣṭrasya bhīṣmasya vidurasya ca
tiṣṭheyuḥ pāṇḍavāḥ sarve hitvā mānam adhaścarāḥ
14. te sarve bālāḥ pāṇḍavāḥ,
dhṛtarāṣṭrasya bhīṣmasya ca vidurasya (adhīnam),
mānam hitvā,
adhaścarāḥ tiṣṭheyuḥ
14. (My proposal was that) all those boys, the Pandavas, should abandon their pride and remain subservient (adhaścarāḥ) to Dhritarashtra, Bhishma, and Vidura.
प्रयच्छन्तु च ते राज्यमनीशास्ते भवन्तु च ।
यथाह राजा गाङ्गेयो विदुरश्च तथास्तु तत् ॥१५॥
15. prayacchantu ca te rājyamanīśāste bhavantu ca ,
yathāha rājā gāṅgeyo viduraśca tathāstu tat.
15. prayacchantu ca te rājyam anīśāḥ te bhavantu ca
yathā āha rājā gāṅgeyaḥ viduraḥ ca tathā astu tat
15. te rājyam prayacchantu ca te anīśāḥ bhavantu ca
yathā rājā gāṅgeyaḥ ca viduraḥ āha tat tathā astu
15. Let them grant you the kingdom, and let them remain without power. Let it be as King Gāṅgeya (Bhīṣma) and Vidura have said.
सर्वं भवतु ते राज्यं पञ्च ग्रामान्विसर्जय ।
अवश्यं भरणीया हि पितुस्ते राजसत्तम ॥१६॥
16. sarvaṁ bhavatu te rājyaṁ pañca grāmānvisarjaya ,
avaśyaṁ bharaṇīyā hi pituste rājasattama.
16. sarvam bhavatu te rājyam pañca grāmān visarjaya
avaśyam bharaṇīyā hi pituḥ te rājasattama
16. rājasattama,
sarvam rājyam te bhavatu pañca grāmān visarjaya hi te pituḥ bharaṇīyā avaśyam
16. Let the entire kingdom be yours; but grant five villages. For, O best of kings, your father's (honor) must surely be upheld.
एवमुक्तस्तु दुष्टात्मा नैव भावं व्यमुञ्चत ।
दण्डं चतुर्थं पश्यामि तेषु पापेषु नान्यथा ॥१७॥
17. evamuktastu duṣṭātmā naiva bhāvaṁ vyamuñcata ,
daṇḍaṁ caturthaṁ paśyāmi teṣu pāpeṣu nānyathā.
17. evam uktaḥ tu duṣṭātmā na eva bhāvam vyamuñcata
daṇḍam caturtham paśyāmi teṣu pāpeṣu na anyathā
17. evam uktaḥ tu duṣṭātmā bhāvam na eva vyamuñcata teṣu pāpeṣu caturtham daṇḍam paśyāmi,
na anyathā
17. But the wicked soul (Duṣṭātmā), thus addressed, did not at all relinquish his [evil] intention. I see a fourth [course of action, namely] punishment (daṇḍa) for those sinners; there is no other way.
निर्याताश्च विनाशाय कुरुक्षेत्रं नराधिपाः ।
एतत्ते कथितं सर्वं यद्वृत्तं कुरुसंसदि ॥१८॥
18. niryātāśca vināśāya kurukṣetraṁ narādhipāḥ ,
etatte kathitaṁ sarvaṁ yadvṛttaṁ kurusaṁsadi.
18. niryātāḥ ca vināśāya kurukṣetram narādhipāḥ
etat te kathitam sarvam yat vṛttam kurusaṃsadi
18. narādhipāḥ ca vināśāya kurukṣetram niryātāḥ yat kurusaṃsadi vṛttam,
etat sarvam te kathitam
18. And the kings have indeed set out for Kurukṣetra, destined for destruction. Everything that transpired in the Kuru assembly has now been recounted to you.
न ते राज्यं प्रयच्छन्ति विना युद्धेन पाण्डव ।
विनाशहेतवः सर्वे प्रत्युपस्थितमृत्यवः ॥१९॥
19. na te rājyaṁ prayacchanti vinā yuddhena pāṇḍava ,
vināśahetavaḥ sarve pratyupasthitamṛtyavaḥ.
19. na te rājyam prayacchanti vinā yuddhena pāṇḍava
| vināśahetavaḥ sarve pratyupasthitamṛtyavaḥ
19. pāṇḍava te vinā yuddhena rājyam na prayacchanti
sarve vināśahetavaḥ pratyupasthitamṛtyavaḥ
19. O Pāṇḍava, they will not grant you the kingdom without a battle. All of them are agents of destruction, with death (mṛtyu) facing them directly.
