Vāsudeva said: "O king, I had left the city of Ānarta; then, at that time, after your great Rājasūya (yajña) had concluded, I returned there."

And, O great king, I saw Dvārakā, stripped of its brilliance, devoid of sacred recitations (svādhyāya) and sacrificial invocations (vaṣaṭkāra), and lacking its splendid, jeweled women.

Having seen the unrecognizable forms of Dvārakā's groves and gardens, I became filled with doubt and questioned Hṛdika's son (Kṛtavarman).

This city of the Vṛṣṇis is greatly afflicted with unwell men and women. O tiger among men, what is this? We wish to hear.

Thus addressed by me, Hārdikya (Kṛtavarman), O best of kings, recounted this in detail: the siege and the liberation (mokṣa) concerning Śālva.

Then, O best of Kauravas, having heard everything completely, I immediately made a decision regarding the destruction of King Śālva.

7.
Then, O best among the Bhāratas, I first reassured the people in the city, as well as King Āhuka and Anakadundubhi, and all the foremost Vṛṣṇi warriors. Gladdening them, I then spoke.

O chiefs among the Yādavas, vigilance must always be maintained in the city. Understand that I have departed to destroy King Śālva.

9.
I will not return to the city of Dvāravatī without killing him. Only after slaying the city of Saubha, along with Śālva, will I see you all again. Let this war-drum, Trisāmā, which terrifies enemies, be struck.

O best among the Bhāratas, those heroes, having been reassured by me, all joyfully said to me, "Go forth! Destroy the enemies!"

O Yudhishthira, that wicked-souled one, having spotted me from a distance, as if smiling, then repeatedly challenged me to battle.

His city could not be reached by my many vital-part-piercing arrows released from the Śārṅga bow. Then, anger entered into me.

O king, that formidable demon, who was of evil nature and the lowest among the Daityas, also showered thousands of streams of arrows upon me.

Then, in battle, the valiant followers of Śālva launched hundreds of thousands of well-crafted arrows, with their joints smoothly bent, upon me.

Then, O descendant of Kuru, I also discharged many tens of thousands of consecrated arrows with a divine bow, following the proper method.

The arrows, released from my bow in the great battle, penetrated the limbs of the Dānavas, stained with blood, just like moths.

Then, in the midst of Saubha, a great clamor arose, consisting of cries of "Let them be slain with sharp arrows!" and the sound of those falling into the great ocean.

The Dānavas, with their arms and shoulders severed, and appearing like headless trunks (kabandha), fell down, uttering terrible roars.

30.
Then, I indeed filled (blew) the conch (jalaja) Pāñcajanya, which shone with the luster of cow's milk, jasmine, the moon, lotus stalks, and silver, with my breath (prāṇa).

31.
Having seen them fallen there, Shalva, the lord of Saubha, then fought me in battle with a great illusory confrontation (māyā).

32.
Then, various weapons like huḍahuḍas, spears, śaktis (darts), śūlas (lances), paraśvadhas (axes), paṭṭiśas (sharp-edged spears), and bhuśuṇḍis (clubs or slings) fell upon me incessantly.
तानहं माययैवाशु प्रतिगृह्य व्यनाशयम् ।

33.
I swiftly seized and destroyed those weapons through my own illusory power (māyā). When that illusion (māyā) was thus vanquished, he (Shalva) then fought using mountain peaks.

34.
Then, it became as if dark and as if dawn at the same time. It was a bad day and a good day, cold and hot, O Bhārata.

35.
In this way, the enemy, manifesting his illusion (māyā), fought me. Understanding all of that, I countered and destroyed it precisely with illusion (māyā) itself. Then, at the opportune moment, I completely vanquished him with arrows from all sides through battle.

36.
Thereafter, O great king, the sky appeared as if it had a hundred suns. And, O son of Kunti, it seemed to have a hundred moons and thousands upon thousands of stars.

37.
At that point, neither day nor night, nor the directions, could be distinguished. Then I, overcome with confusion, unleashed the weapon of wisdom (prajñāstra). But then that weapon was scattered by another weapon, just like cotton wool hit by an arrow.

38.
Thus, that battle became tumultuous and hair-raising. Having regained my sight, O king of kings, I then fought the enemy again.
