10. O Grandfather (pitāmaha), you pierce me with word-arrows as you please, though I am innocent, always out of malice (dveṣa), repeatedly in this very way. Yet, I endure all of it for Duryodhana's sake.

11. tu tvam mām aśaktam kāpuruṣam yathā tathā manyase
mahyam bhavān ardharathaḥ mataḥ atra saṃśayaḥ na asti
11. You, however, consider me incapable, just like a cowardly man. In my opinion, you are merely a half-chariot warrior; there is no doubt about this.

12. sarvasya jagataścaiva gāṅgeya na mṛṣā vade ,

12. gāṅgeya,
sarvasya jagataḥ ca eva na mṛṣā vade kurūṇām ahitaḥ nityam ca rājā na avabudhyate
12. O Gāṅgeya, I certainly do not speak falsely about the entire world. He is perpetually an enemy to the Kurus, and the king (Dhṛtarāṣṭra) does not comprehend this.
13. ko hi nāma samāneṣu rājasūdāttakarmasu ,

rājasu imam tejovadham
vibhedayişuḥ āhave kuryāt yathā tvam
guṇanirdeśāt aparādham cikīrṣasi
13. Who indeed, among kings of equal standing and noble deeds, would inflict such an insult to their valor, especially when desiring to cause division in battle? Yet, you seek to commit an offense through your mention of [their] qualities.

14. kaurava,
kṣatrasya mahārathatvam hāyanaiḥ na palitaiḥ na vittaiḥ na ca bandhubhiḥ saṃkhyātum na śakyam
14. O Kaurava, the status of a great chariot-warrior (mahāratha) cannot be reckoned for a kṣatriya by [advanced] years, nor by gray hairs, nor by wealth, nor by [numerous] relatives.
15. balajyeṣṭhaṁ smṛtaṁ kṣatraṁ mantrajyeṣṭhā dvijātayaḥ ,
dhanajyeṣṭhāḥ smṛtā vaiśyāḥ śūdrāstu vayasādhikāḥ.
15. bala-jyeṣṭham smṛtam kṣatram mantra-jyeṣṭhāḥ dvi-jātayaḥ
dhana-jyeṣṭhāḥ smṛtā vaiśyāḥ śūdrāḥ tu vayasādhikāḥ
15. kṣatram bala-jyeṣṭham smṛtam;
dvi-jātayaḥ mantra-jyeṣṭhāḥ (smṛtāḥ);
vaiśyāḥ dhana-jyeṣṭhāḥ smṛtāḥ;
śūdrāḥ tu vayasādhikāḥ (smṛtāḥ)
15. The warrior class (kṣatra) is traditionally considered pre-eminent because of their strength. The twice-born (dvijāti) are pre-eminent because of their sacred knowledge (mantra). The Vaishyas are regarded as pre-eminent due to their wealth, while the Shudras hold pre-eminence based on their age.
16. yathecchakaṁ svayaṁgrāhādrathānatirathāṁstathā ,

16. bhavān kāma-dveṣa-samāyuktaḥ mohāt yathā-iccham svayaṃ-grāhāt rathān tathā ati-rathān prakurute.
16. Influenced by desire and hatred, and out of delusion (moha), you are arbitrarily appointing charioteers and great charioteers according to your own whims.
17. duryodhana mahābāho sādhu samyagavekṣyatām ,

17. duryodhana mahā-bāho sādhu samyak avekṣyatām
tyajyatām duṣṭa-bhāvaḥ ayam bhīṣmaḥ kilbiṣa-kṛt tava
17. mahā-bāho duryodhana,
sādhu samyak avekṣyatām; ayam duṣṭa-bhāvaḥ tyajyatām; bhīṣmaḥ tava kilbiṣa-kṛt (asti).
17. O mighty-armed Duryodhana, let this be thoroughly considered. Abandon this wicked attitude (duṣṭabhāva); Bhishma is indeed causing you trouble.
18. bhinnā hi senā nṛpate duḥsaṁdheyā bhavatyuta ,

18. bhinnā hi senā nṛpate duḥsandheyā bhavati uta
maulā api puruṣa-vyāghra kimu nānā sam-utthitā
18. nṛpate,
bhinnā senā hi duḥsandheyā bhavati; uta maulā api.
puruṣa-vyāghra,
kimu (iyaṃ) nānā samutthitā (senā)!
18. O King, a divided army is indeed difficult to reunite, even if it is a hereditary force. O tiger among men, how much more so if it has been assembled from various disparate elements?
19. eṣāṁ dvaidhaṁ samutpannaṁ yodhānāṁ yudhi bhārata ,
tejovadho naḥ kriyate pratyakṣeṇa viśeṣataḥ.
19. eṣām dvaidham samutpannam yodhānām yudhi bhārata
tejaḥvadhaḥ naḥ kriyate pratyakṣeṇa viśeṣataḥ
19. bhārata eṣām yodhānām yudhi dvaidham samutpannam
naḥ tejaḥvadhaḥ pratyakṣeṇa viśeṣataḥ kriyate
19. O Bhārata, a dilemma has arisen among these warriors in battle, and our vigor is being visibly and especially diminished.
20. rathānāṁ kva ca vijñānaṁ kva ca bhīṣmo'lpacetanaḥ ,

20. kva ca rathānām vijñānam kva ca alpacetanaḥ
bhīṣmaḥ aham pāṇḍavānām anīkinīm āvārayiṣyāmi
20. Where is the skill in chariots, and where is Bhīṣma, who has little consciousness? I myself will restrain the army of the Pāṇḍavas.
21. āsādya māmamogheṣuṁ gamiṣyanti diśo daśa ,
pāṇḍavāḥ sahapañcālāḥ śārdūlaṁ vṛṣabhā iva.
21. āsādya mām amogheṣum gamiṣyanti diśaḥ daśa
pāṇḍavāḥ sahapañcālāḥ śārdūlam vṛṣabhā iva
21. amogheṣum mām āsādya pāṇḍavāḥ sahapañcālāḥ
daśa diśaḥ śārdūlam vṛṣabhā iva gamiṣyanti
21. When they confront me, whose arrows are unfailing, the Pāṇḍavas along with the Pañcālas will flee in all ten directions, just as bulls would flee from a tiger.
22. kva ca yuddhavimardo vā mantrāḥ suvyāhṛtāni vā ,
kva ca bhīṣmo gatavayā mandātmā kālamohitaḥ.
22. kva ca yuddhavimardaḥ vā mantrāḥ suvyāhṛtāni vā
kva ca bhīṣmaḥ gatavayā mandātmā kālamohitaḥ
22. kva ca yuddhavimardaḥ vā suvyāhṛtāni mantrāḥ vā
kva ca gatavayā mandātmā kālamohitaḥ bhīṣmaḥ
22. Where is the fierce intensity of battle, or well-articulated strategies? And where is Bhīṣma, who is aged, slow-minded, and bewildered by time?
23. spardhate hi sadā nityaṁ sarveṇa jagatā saha ,
na cānyaṁ puruṣaṁ kaṁcinmanyate moghadarśanaḥ.
23. spardhate hi sadā nityam sarveṇa jagatā saha na
ca anyam puruṣam kañcit manyate moghadarśanaḥ
23. moghadarśanaḥ hi sadā nityam sarveṇa jagatā saha
spardhate ca na anyam puruṣam kañcit manyate
23. Indeed, he whose perception is deluded (moghadarśana) always and constantly competes with the entire world. He does not consider anyone else a significant person (puruṣa).
24. śrotavyaṁ khalu vṛddhānāmiti śāstranidarśanam ,
na tvevāpyativṛddhānāṁ punarbālā hi te matāḥ.
24. Indeed, it is a scriptural precept (śāstra) that one should listen to the elders. However, one should not listen even to the extremely aged, for they are considered to be children again.
25. ahameko haniṣyāmi pāṇḍavānnātra saṁśayaḥ ,

25. aham ekaḥ haniṣyāmi pāṇḍavān na atra saṃśayaḥ
suyuddhe rājaśārdūla yaśaḥ bhīṣmam gamiṣyati
25. aham ekaḥ pāṇḍavān haniṣyāmi atra saṃśayaḥ na
rājaśārdūla suyuddhe yaśaḥ bhīṣmam gamiṣyati
25. I alone will kill the Pāṇḍavas; there is no doubt about this. O tiger among kings (rājaśārdūla), in a great battle, fame will indeed go to Bhīṣma.
26. kṛtaḥ senāpatistveṣa tvayā bhīṣmo narādhipa ,

26. kṛtaḥ senāpatiḥ tu eṣaḥ tvayā bhīṣmaḥ narādhipa
senāpatim guṇaḥ gantā na tu yodhān kathañcana
26. narādhipa tvayā eṣaḥ bhīṣmaḥ senāpatiḥ kṛtaḥ tu
senāpatim guṇaḥ gantā tu na kathañcana yodhān
26. O king (narādhipa), Bhīṣma has been appointed by you as the commander-in-chief. The essence of command (guṇa) will pertain to the commander-in-chief, and not at all to the ordinary warriors.
27. nāhaṁ jīvati gāṅgeye yotsye rājankathaṁcana ,
hate tu bhīṣme yodhāsmi sarvaireva mahārathaiḥ.
27. na aham jīvati gāṅgeye yotsye rājan kathaṃcana |
hate tu bhīṣme yodhā asmi sarvaiḥ eva mahārathaiḥ
27. rājan gāṅgeye jīvati aham kathaṃcana na yotsye
bhīṣme hate tu sarvaiḥ mahārathaiḥ eva yodhā asmi
27. O King, I will certainly not fight as long as Bhīṣma, the son of Gaṅgā, is alive. But when Bhīṣma is slain, then I will indeed fight against all the great charioteers.
