यत्र वैकर्तनः कर्णो राक्षसश्च घटोत्कचः ।
निशीथे समसज्जेतां तद्युद्धमभवत्कथम् ॥१॥

1. Dhṛtarāṣṭra asked: "When Karṇa (vaikartana) and Ghaṭotkaca, the demon, engaged at midnight, how exactly did that battle unfold?"
कीदृशं चाभवद्युद्धं तस्य घोरस्य रक्षसः ।
रथश्च कीदृशस्तस्य मायाः सर्वायुधानि च ॥२॥
2. kīdṛśaṁ cābhavadyuddhaṁ tasya ghorasya rakṣasaḥ ,
rathaśca kīdṛśastasya māyāḥ sarvāyudhāni ca.
2. kīdṛśam ca abhavat yuddham tasya ghorasya rakṣasaḥ

2. And what kind of battle was that dreadful demon's? What was his chariot like, and his illusions (māyā), and all his weapons?
किंप्रमाणा हयास्तस्य रथकेतुर्धनुस्तथा ।
कीदृशं वर्म चैवास्य कण्ठत्राणं च कीदृशम् ।
पृष्टस्त्वमेतदाचक्ष्व कुशलो ह्यसि संजय ॥३॥
3. kiṁpramāṇā hayāstasya rathaketurdhanustathā ,
kīdṛśaṁ varma caivāsya kaṇṭhatrāṇaṁ ca kīdṛśam ,
pṛṣṭastvametadācakṣva kuśalo hyasi saṁjaya.

3. Sanjaya, you are indeed skilled, so please tell me: What is the size of his horses? What kind of chariot banner and bow does he have? And what kind of armor and neck-guard does he possess?
संजय उवाच ।
लोहिताक्षो महाकायस्ताम्रास्यो निम्नितोदरः ।
ऊर्ध्वरोमा हरिश्मश्रुः शङ्कुकर्णो महाहनुः ॥४॥
4. saṁjaya uvāca ,
lohitākṣo mahākāyastāmrāsyo nimnitodaraḥ ,
ūrdhvaromā hariśmaśruḥ śaṅkukarṇo mahāhanuḥ.

4. Sanjaya said: [He had] red eyes, a massive body, a copper-colored face, a sunken belly, upward-pointing hair, a tawny beard, cone-shaped ears, and a large jaw.
आकर्णाद्दारितास्यश्च तीक्ष्णदंष्ट्रः करालवान् ।
सुदीर्घताम्रजिह्वोष्ठो लम्बभ्रूः स्थूलनासिकः ॥५॥
5. ākarṇāddāritāsyaśca tīkṣṇadaṁṣṭraḥ karālavān ,
sudīrghatāmrajihvoṣṭho lambabhrūḥ sthūlanāsikaḥ.

5. And [he had] a mouth split open up to the ears, sharp fangs, a terrifying appearance, a very long and copper-colored tongue and lips, drooping eyebrows, and a thick nose.
नीलाङ्गो लोहितग्रीवो गिरिवर्ष्मा भयंकरः ।
महाकायो महाबाहुर्महाशीर्षो महाबलः ॥६॥
6. nīlāṅgo lohitagrīvo girivarṣmā bhayaṁkaraḥ ,
mahākāyo mahābāhurmahāśīrṣo mahābalaḥ.

6. [He was] blue-bodied, red-necked, with a form like a mountain, terrifying, massive-bodied, mighty-armed, with a massive head, and of immense strength.
विकचः परुषस्पर्शो विकटोद्बद्धपिण्डिकः ।
स्थूलस्फिग्गूढनाभिश्च शिथिलोपचयो महान् ॥७॥
7. vikacaḥ paruṣasparśo vikaṭodbaddhapiṇḍikaḥ ,
sthūlasphiggūḍhanābhiśca śithilopacayo mahān.

7. He was massive, with an expansive form, rough to the touch, having prominently bulging calves and thick buttocks, a deep navel, and a physique that was loosely built (or with loosely accumulated flesh).
तथैव हस्ताभरणी महामायोऽङ्गदी तथा ।
उरसा धारयन्निष्कमग्निमालां यथाचलः ॥८॥
8. tathaiva hastābharaṇī mahāmāyo'ṅgadī tathā ,
urasā dhārayanniṣkamagnimālāṁ yathācalaḥ.

urasā dhārayan niṣkam agnimālām yathā acalaḥ
8. (saḥ - implied subject) tathā eva hastābharaṇī tathā

8. Similarly, he wore hand-ornaments, and being one of great illusion (māyā), he also wore armlets. Upon his chest, he bore a golden necklace and a fiery garland, like a mountain.
तस्य हेममयं चित्रं बहुरूपाङ्गशोभितम् ।
तोरणप्रतिमं शुभ्रं किरीटं मूर्ध्न्यशोभत ॥९॥
9. tasya hemamayaṁ citraṁ bahurūpāṅgaśobhitam ,
toraṇapratimaṁ śubhraṁ kirīṭaṁ mūrdhnyaśobhata.

9. Upon his head shone a magnificent golden crown, variegated and adorned with various shapes, shining brightly and resembling a grand archway.
कुण्डले बालसूर्याभे मालां हेममयीं शुभाम् ।
धारयन्विपुलं कांस्यं कवचं च महाप्रभम् ॥१०॥
10. kuṇḍale bālasūryābhe mālāṁ hemamayīṁ śubhām ,
dhārayanvipulaṁ kāṁsyaṁ kavacaṁ ca mahāprabham.
10. kuṇḍale bālasūryābhe mālām hemamayīm śubhām
dhārayan vipulam kāṃsyam kavacam ca mahāprabham
10. (saḥ - implied subject) bālasūryābhe kuṇḍale,

10. He wore a pair of earrings radiant like the morning sun, a beautiful golden garland, and a vast, greatly brilliant bronze armor.
किङ्किणीशतनिर्घोषं रक्तध्वजपताकिनम् ।
ऋक्षचर्मावनद्धाङ्गं नल्वमात्रं महारथम् ॥११॥
11. kiṅkiṇīśatanirghoṣaṁ raktadhvajapatākinam ,
ṛkṣacarmāvanaddhāṅgaṁ nalvamātraṁ mahāratham.

11. A great chariot that resounded with the noise of a hundred tiny bells, adorned with red banners and flags, its body covered with bear hides, and measuring a nalva (a significant unit of length) in length.
सर्वायुधवरोपेतमास्थितो ध्वजमालिनम् ।
अष्टचक्रसमायुक्तं मेघगम्भीरनिस्वनम् ॥१२॥
12. sarvāyudhavaropetamāsthito dhvajamālinam ,
aṣṭacakrasamāyuktaṁ meghagambhīranisvanam.
12. sarvāyudhavaropetam āsthitaḥ dhvajamālinam
aṣṭacakrasamāyuktam meghagambhīranisvanam
12. (saḥ) sarvāyudhavaropetam dhvajamālinam
aṣṭacakrasamāyuktam meghagambhīranisvanam (ratham) āsthitaḥ
12. He was seated upon it - a chariot equipped with all the finest weapons, adorned with garlands of flags, furnished with eight wheels, and rumbling with a deep sound like thunder from clouds.
तत्र मातङ्गसंकाशा लोहिताक्षा विभीषणाः ।
कामवर्णजवा युक्ता बलवन्तोऽवहन्हयाः ॥१३॥
13. tatra mātaṅgasaṁkāśā lohitākṣā vibhīṣaṇāḥ ,
kāmavarṇajavā yuktā balavanto'vahanhayāḥ.
13. tatra mātaṅgasaṃkāśāḥ lohitākṣāḥ vibhīṣaṇāḥ
kāmavarṇajavāḥ yuktāḥ balavantaḥ avahan hayāḥ

13. Thereupon, powerful, red-eyed, terrifying horses, appearing like elephants and possessing desired colors and speed, were yoked and pulled (the chariot).
राक्षसोऽस्य विरूपाक्षः सूतो दीप्तास्यकुण्डलः ।
रश्मिभिः सूर्यरश्म्याभैः संजग्राह हयान्रणे ।
स तेन सहितस्तस्थावरुणेन यथा रविः ॥१४॥
14. rākṣaso'sya virūpākṣaḥ sūto dīptāsyakuṇḍalaḥ ,
raśmibhiḥ sūryaraśmyābhaiḥ saṁjagrāha hayānraṇe ,
sa tena sahitastasthāvaruṇena yathā raviḥ.
14. rākṣasaḥ asya virūpākṣaḥ sūtaḥ
dīptāsyakuṇḍalaḥ raśmibhiḥ sūryaraśmyābhāiḥ
saṃjagrāha hayān raṇe saḥ tena
sahitaḥ tasthau aruṇena yathā raviḥ
14. asya sūtaḥ rākṣasaḥ virūpākṣaḥ dīptāsyakuṇḍalaḥ.
raṇe sūryaraśmyābhāiḥ raśmibhiḥ hayān saṃjagrāha.
saḥ tena sahitaḥ tasthau,
yathā raviḥ aruṇena (tasthau)
14. His charioteer was the demon Virupaksha, whose face shone with earrings. In battle, he skillfully controlled the horses with reins that resembled sunbeams. He stood (on the chariot) with the warrior, just as the Sun stands with (its charioteer) Aruna.
संसक्त इव चाभ्रेण यथाद्रिर्महता महान् ।
दिवस्पृक्सुमहान्केतुः स्यन्दनेऽस्य समुच्छ्रितः ।
रक्तोत्तमाङ्गः क्रव्यादो गृध्रः परमभीषणः ॥१५॥
15. saṁsakta iva cābhreṇa yathādrirmahatā mahān ,
divaspṛksumahānketuḥ syandane'sya samucchritaḥ ,
raktottamāṅgaḥ kravyādo gṛdhraḥ paramabhīṣaṇaḥ.
15. saṃsaktaḥ iva ca abhrena yathā adriḥ
mahatā mahān divaḥspṛk sumahān ketuḥ
syandane asya samucchritaḥ raktottamāṅgaḥ
kravyādaḥ gṛdhraḥ param abhīṣaṇaḥ
15. asya syandane mahatā abhrena saṃsaktaḥ
yathā mahān adriḥ iva divaḥspṛk
sumahān ketuḥ samucchritaḥ raktottamāṅgaḥ
param abhīṣaṇaḥ kravyādaḥ gṛdhraḥ
15. On his chariot, a very great banner, touching the sky, was hoisted, appearing like a huge mountain enveloped by a vast cloud. It bore the emblem of an extremely terrifying, flesh-eating vulture with a blood-red head.
वासवाशनिनिर्घोषं दृढज्यमभिविक्षिपन् ।
व्यक्तं किष्कुपरीणाहं द्वादशारत्नि कार्मुकम् ॥१६॥
16. vāsavāśaninirghoṣaṁ dṛḍhajyamabhivikṣipan ,
vyaktaṁ kiṣkuparīṇāhaṁ dvādaśāratni kārmukam.
16. vāsavāśaninirghoṣam dṛḍhajyam abhivikṣipan
vyaktam kiṣkupariṇāham dvādaśāratni kārmukam
16. saḥ vāsavāśaninirghoṣam dṛḍhajyam vyaktam
kiṣkupariṇāham dvādaśāratni kārmukam abhivikṣipan
16. Clearly stretching (his bowstring), which produced a sound like Indra's thunderbolt, he wielded a strong-stringed bow, twelve cubits long and one cubit in circumference.
रथाक्षमात्रैरिषुभिः सर्वाः प्रच्छादयन्दिशः ।
तस्यां वीरापहारिण्यां निशायां कर्णमभ्ययात् ॥१७॥
17. rathākṣamātrairiṣubhiḥ sarvāḥ pracchādayandiśaḥ ,
tasyāṁ vīrāpahāriṇyāṁ niśāyāṁ karṇamabhyayāt.
17. rathākṣamātraiḥ iṣubhiḥ sarvāḥ pracchādayan diśaḥ
tasyām vīrāpahāriṇyām niśāyām karṇam abhyayāt
17. saḥ rathākṣamātraiḥ iṣubhiḥ sarvāḥ diśaḥ pracchādayan
vīrāpahāriṇyām tasyām niśāyām karṇam abhyayāt
17. Covering all directions with arrows as thick as chariot axles, he approached Karṇa during that night which was snatching away warriors.
तस्य विक्षिपतश्चापं रथे विष्टभ्य तिष्ठतः ।
अश्रूयत धनुर्घोषो विस्फूर्जितमिवाशनेः ॥१८॥
18. tasya vikṣipataścāpaṁ rathe viṣṭabhya tiṣṭhataḥ ,
aśrūyata dhanurghoṣo visphūrjitamivāśaneḥ.
18. tasya vikṣipataḥ ca cāpam rathe viṣṭabhya tiṣṭhataḥ
aśrūyata dhanurghoṣaḥ visphūrjitam iva aśaneḥ
18. rathe viṣṭabhya tiṣṭhataḥ cāpam vikṣipataḥ tasya
dhanurghoṣaḥ aśaneḥ iva visphūrjitam aśrūyata
18. As he stood firmly on his chariot, stretching his bow, the sound of that bow was heard like the roar of a thunderbolt.
तेन वित्रास्यमानानि तव सैन्यानि भारत ।
समकम्पन्त सर्वाणि सिन्धोरिव महोर्मयः ॥१९॥
19. tena vitrāsyamānāni tava sainyāni bhārata ,
samakampanta sarvāṇi sindhoriva mahormayaḥ.
19. tena vitrāsyāmānāni tava sainyāni bhārata
samakampanta sarvāṇi sindhoḥ iva mahormayaḥ
19. bhārata tena vitrāsyāmānāni tava sarvāṇi
sainyāni sindhoḥ mahormayaḥ iva samakampanta
19. O Bhārata, your armies, being terrified by him, all trembled like the great waves of the ocean.
तमापतन्तं संप्रेक्ष्य विरूपाक्षं विभीषणम् ।
उत्स्मयन्निव राधेयस्त्वरमाणोऽभ्यवारयत् ॥२०॥
20. tamāpatantaṁ saṁprekṣya virūpākṣaṁ vibhīṣaṇam ,
utsmayanniva rādheyastvaramāṇo'bhyavārayat.
20. tam āpatantam saṃprekṣya virūpākṣam vibhīṣaṇam
utsmayan iva rādheyaḥ tvaramāṇaḥ abhyavārayat
20. rādheyaḥ saṃprekṣya tam virūpākṣam vibhīṣaṇam
āpatantam utsmayan iva tvaramāṇaḥ abhyavārayat
20. Having seen that frightful Virūpākṣa rushing forward, Karṇa, the son of Rādhā, as if faintly smiling, swiftly intercepted him.
ततः कर्णोऽभ्ययादेनमस्यन्नस्यन्तमन्तिकात् ।
मातङ्ग इव मातङ्गं यूथर्षभ इवर्षभम् ॥२१॥
21. tataḥ karṇo'bhyayādenamasyannasyantamantikāt ,
mātaṅga iva mātaṅgaṁ yūtharṣabha ivarṣabham.
21. tataḥ karṇaḥ abhyayāt enam asyan asyantam antikāt
mātaṅgaḥ iva mātaṅgam yūtharṣabhaḥ iva ṛṣabham
21. tataḥ karṇaḥ asyan antikāt asyantam enam abhyayāt
mātaṅgaḥ iva mātaṅgam yūtharṣabhaḥ iva ṛṣabham
21. Then Karṇa, shooting at him who was also shooting, approached him from nearby, just as an elephant (confronts) an elephant, or the lord of a herd (confronts) a bull.
स संनिपातस्तुमुलस्तयोरासीद्विशां पते ।
कर्णराक्षसयो राजन्निन्द्रशम्बरयोरिव ॥२२॥
22. sa saṁnipātastumulastayorāsīdviśāṁ pate ,
karṇarākṣasayo rājannindraśambarayoriva.
22. saḥ saṃnipātaḥ tumulaḥ tayoḥ āsīt viśām pate
karṇarākṣasayoḥ rājan indraśambarayoḥ iva
22. rājan viśām pate saḥ tayoḥ karṇarākṣasayoḥ
tumulaḥ saṃnipātaḥ indraśambarayoḥ iva āsīt
22. O king, that tumultuous clash between them, between Karṇa and the rākṣasa, was like that between Indra and Śambara.
तौ प्रगृह्य महावेगे धनुषी भीमनिस्वने ।
प्राच्छादयेतामन्योन्यं तक्षमाणौ महेषुभिः ॥२३॥
23. tau pragṛhya mahāvege dhanuṣī bhīmanisvane ,
prācchādayetāmanyonyaṁ takṣamāṇau maheṣubhiḥ.

prācchādayetām anyonyaṃ takṣamāṇau maheṣubhiḥ

23. Having grasped their two bows, swift and with a terrible twang, they both covered each other, wounding with great arrows.
ततः पूर्णायतोत्सृष्टैः शरैः संनतपर्वभिः ।
न्यवारयेतामन्योन्यं कांस्ये निर्भिद्य वर्मणी ॥२४॥
24. tataḥ pūrṇāyatotsṛṣṭaiḥ śaraiḥ saṁnataparvabhiḥ ,
nyavārayetāmanyonyaṁ kāṁsye nirbhidya varmaṇī.
24. tataḥ pūrṇāyatotsṛṣṭaiḥ śaraiḥ saṃnataparvabhiḥ
nyavārayetām anyonyaṃ kāṃsye nirbhidya varmaṇī

24. Then, with arrows released with full drawing and having bent shafts, they both warded each other off, having pierced the two bronze armors.
तौ नखैरिव शार्दूलौ दन्तैरिव महाद्विपौ ।
रथशक्तिभिरन्योन्यं विशिखैश्च ततक्षतुः ॥२५॥
25. tau nakhairiva śārdūlau dantairiva mahādvipau ,
rathaśaktibhiranyonyaṁ viśikhaiśca tatakṣatuḥ.
25. tau nakhaiḥ iva śārdūlau dantaiḥ iva mahādvipau
rathaśaktibhiḥ anyonyaṃ viśikhaiḥ ca tatakṣatuḥ
25. tau nakhaiḥ iva śārdūlau dantaiḥ iva mahādvipau
rathaśaktibhiḥ ca viśikhaiḥ anyonyaṃ tatakṣatuḥ
25. They both wounded each other with chariot spears and arrows, just as two tigers would with their claws, or two great elephants with their tusks.
संछिन्दन्तौ हि गात्राणि संदधानौ च सायकान् ।
धक्ष्यमाणौ शरव्रातैर्नोदीक्षितुमशक्नुताम् ॥२६॥
26. saṁchindantau hi gātrāṇi saṁdadhānau ca sāyakān ,
dhakṣyamāṇau śaravrātairnodīkṣitumaśaknutām.

dhakṣyamāṇau śaravrātaiḥ na udīkṣitum aśaknutām

26. Indeed, as they both severed limbs and fitted arrows, being overwhelmed by showers of arrows, they were unable to even look up.
तौ तु विक्षतसर्वाङ्गौ रुधिरौघपरिप्लुतौ ।
व्यभ्राजेतां यथा वारिप्रस्रुतौ गैरिकाचलौ ॥२७॥
27. tau tu vikṣatasarvāṅgau rudhiraughapariplutau ,
vyabhrājetāṁ yathā vāriprasrutau gairikācalau.

27. However, with all their limbs wounded and drenched in torrents of blood, those two shone like mountains streaked with red ochre and streaming with water.
तौ शराग्रविभिन्नाङ्गौ निर्भिन्दन्तौ परस्परम् ।
नाकम्पयेतामन्योन्यं यतमानौ महाद्युती ॥२८॥

28. Even as their bodies were pierced by arrowheads and they continued to pierce each other, those two, highly energetic and striving, did not make each other waver.
तत्प्रवृत्तं निशायुद्धं चिरं सममिवाभवत् ।
प्राणयोर्दीव्यतो राजन्कर्णराक्षसयोर्मृधे ॥२९॥
29. tatpravṛttaṁ niśāyuddhaṁ ciraṁ samamivābhavat ,
prāṇayordīvyato rājankarṇarākṣasayormṛdhe.

29. O King, that night battle which had commenced between Karṇa and the demon (Ghaṭotkaca) continued for a long time, appearing evenly matched, as they both gambled with their lives (prāṇa) in the combat.
तस्य संदधतस्तीक्ष्णाञ्शरांश्चासक्तमस्यतः ।
धनुर्घोषेण वित्रस्ताः स्वे परे च तदाभवन् ।
घटोत्कचं यदा कर्णो विशेषयति नो नृप ॥३०॥
30. tasya saṁdadhatastīkṣṇāñśarāṁścāsaktamasyataḥ ,
dhanurghoṣeṇa vitrastāḥ sve pare ca tadābhavan ,
ghaṭotkacaṁ yadā karṇo viśeṣayati no nṛpa.

30. As he (Karṇa) fitted sharp arrows and ceaselessly shot them, his own men and the enemies alike became terrified by the twang of his bow. Yet, O King, Karṇa was unable to gain a decisive advantage over Ghaṭotkaca.
ततः प्रादुष्करोद्दिव्यमस्त्रमस्त्रविदां वरः ।
कर्णेन विहितं दृष्ट्वा दिव्यमस्त्रं घटोत्कचः ।
प्रादुश्चक्रे महामायां राक्षसः पाण्डुनन्दनः ॥३१॥

karṇena vihitaṁ dṛṣṭvā divyamastraṁ ghaṭotkacaḥ ,

31. Then, Karṇa, the best among those skilled in weapons, manifested a divine weapon. Having seen that divine weapon employed by Karṇa, Ghatotkaca, the demon and son of Pāṇḍu, manifested a great illusion (māyā).
शूलमुद्गरधारिण्या शैलपादपहस्तया ।
रक्षसां घोररूपाणां महत्या सेनया वृतः ॥३२॥

32. He (Ghatotkaca) was surrounded by a vast army of terrifying-looking demons, an army that wielded spears and maces and held mountains and trees in their hands.
तमुद्यतमहाचापं दृष्ट्वा ते व्यथिता नृपाः ।
भूतान्तकमिवायान्तं कालदण्डोग्रधारिणम् ॥३३॥
33. tamudyatamahācāpaṁ dṛṣṭvā te vyathitā nṛpāḥ ,
bhūtāntakamivāyāntaṁ kāladaṇḍogradhāriṇam.

33. Having seen him with a raised great bow, approaching like the destroyer of all beings, and holding the formidable staff of Death, those kings were distressed.
घटोत्कचप्रमुक्तेन सिंहनादेन भीषिताः ।
प्रसुस्रुवुर्गजा मूत्रं विव्यथुश्च नरा भृशम् ॥३४॥

34. Terrified by the lion's roar (siṃhanāda) let out by Ghatotkaca, the elephants discharged urine, and the men were greatly distressed.
ततोऽश्मवृष्टिरत्युग्रा महत्यासीत्समन्ततः ।
अर्धरात्रेऽधिकबलैर्विमुक्ता रक्षसां बलैः ॥३५॥
35. tato'śmavṛṣṭiratyugrā mahatyāsītsamantataḥ ,
ardharātre'dhikabalairvimuktā rakṣasāṁ balaiḥ.

35. Then, a very fierce and massive rain of stones fell from all directions. It was unleashed at midnight by the exceedingly powerful forces of the Rākṣasas.
आयसानि च चक्राणि भुशुण्ड्यः शक्तितोमराः ।
पतन्त्यविरलाः शूलाः शतघ्न्यः पट्टिशास्तथा ॥३६॥
36. āyasāni ca cakrāṇi bhuśuṇḍyaḥ śaktitomarāḥ ,
patantyaviralāḥ śūlāḥ śataghnyaḥ paṭṭiśāstathā.

36. And iron discs, Bhūśuṇḍis, spears, and lances, as well as pikes, Śataghnīs, and Paṭṭiśas, fell incessantly.
तदुग्रमतिरौद्रं च दृष्ट्वा युद्धं नराधिपाः ।
पुत्राश्च तव योधाश्च व्यथिता विप्रदुद्रुवुः ॥३७॥
37. tadugramatiraudraṁ ca dṛṣṭvā yuddhaṁ narādhipāḥ ,
putrāśca tava yodhāśca vyathitā vipradudruvuḥ.

37. O kings, having seen that fierce and exceedingly dreadful battle, your sons and warriors became distressed and fled in disarray.
तत्रैकोऽस्त्रबलश्लाघी कर्णो मानी न विव्यथे ।
व्यधमच्च शरैर्मायां घटोत्कचविनिर्मिताम् ॥३८॥
38. tatraiko'strabalaślāghī karṇo mānī na vivyathe ,
vyadhamacca śarairmāyāṁ ghaṭotkacavinirmitām.

38. However, among them, only Karṇa, who was proud and boasted of his weapon-power, remained undisturbed. With his arrows, he dispersed the illusion (māyā) created by Ghaṭotkaca.
मायायां तु प्रहीणायाममर्षात्स घटोत्कचः ।
विससर्ज शरान्घोरान्सूतपुत्रं त आविशन् ॥३९॥
39. māyāyāṁ tu prahīṇāyāmamarṣātsa ghaṭotkacaḥ ,
visasarja śarānghorānsūtaputraṁ ta āviśan.

39. When his illusion (māyā) was dispelled, Ghaṭotkaca, out of indignation, discharged dreadful arrows. They then penetrated the son of the charioteer (Sūtaputra).
ततस्ते रुधिराभ्यक्ता भित्त्वा कर्णं महाहवे ।
विविशुर्धरणीं बाणाः संक्रुद्धा इव पन्नगाः ॥४०॥
40. tataste rudhirābhyaktā bhittvā karṇaṁ mahāhave ,
viviśurdharaṇīṁ bāṇāḥ saṁkruddhā iva pannagāḥ.

40. Then those arrows (bāṇa), smeared with blood after piercing Karṇa in the great battle, penetrated the earth, like enraged serpents.
सूतपुत्रस्तु संक्रुद्धो लघुहस्तः प्रतापवान् ।
घटोत्कचमतिक्रम्य बिभेद दशभिः शरैः ॥४१॥
41. sūtaputrastu saṁkruddho laghuhastaḥ pratāpavān ,
ghaṭotkacamatikramya bibheda daśabhiḥ śaraiḥ.

41. But the enraged, swift-handed, and valorous son of the charioteer (Sūtaputra), attacking Ghaṭotkaca, pierced him with ten arrows.
घटोत्कचो विनिर्भिन्नः सूतपुत्रेण मर्मसु ।
चक्रं दिव्यं सहस्रारमगृह्णाद्व्यथितो भृशम् ॥४२॥
42. ghaṭotkaco vinirbhinnaḥ sūtaputreṇa marmasu ,

42. Ghaṭotkaca, deeply wounded in his vital parts by the son of the charioteer (Sūtaputra) and greatly distressed, grasped a divine discus (chakra) with a thousand spokes.
क्षुरान्तं बालसूर्याभं मणिरत्नविभूषितम् ।
चिक्षेपाधिरथेः क्रुद्धो भैमसेनिर्जिघांसया ॥४३॥
43. kṣurāntaṁ bālasūryābhaṁ maṇiratnavibhūṣitam ,
cikṣepādhiratheḥ kruddho bhaimasenirjighāṁsayā.

43. The enraged son of Bhīmasena (Ghaṭotkaca), desiring to kill, hurled [a discus] at the son of Adhiratha (Karṇa). This [discus] had a razor-sharp edge, resembled the morning sun, and was adorned with jewels and gems.
प्रविद्धमतिवेगेन विक्षिप्तं कर्णसायकैः ।
अभाग्यस्येव संकल्पस्तन्मोघमपतद्भुवि ॥४४॥
44. praviddhamativegena vikṣiptaṁ karṇasāyakaiḥ ,
abhāgyasyeva saṁkalpastanmoghamapatadbhuvi.

44. That [discus], thrown with tremendous speed, was scattered by Karṇa's arrows. It fell to the ground in vain, like the resolution of an unfortunate person.
घटोत्कचस्तु संक्रुद्धो दृष्ट्वा चक्रं निपातितम् ।
कर्णं प्राच्छादयद्बाणैः स्वर्भानुरिव भास्करम् ॥४५॥
45. ghaṭotkacastu saṁkruddho dṛṣṭvā cakraṁ nipātitam ,
karṇaṁ prācchādayadbāṇaiḥ svarbhānuriva bhāskaram.

45. But Ghaṭotkaca, greatly enraged upon seeing the discus struck down, covered Karṇa with arrows, just as Rāhu (svarbhānu) eclipses the sun (bhāskara).
सूतपुत्रस्त्वसंभ्रान्तो रुद्रोपेन्द्रेन्द्रविक्रमः ।
घटोत्कचरथं तूर्णं छादयामास पत्रिभिः ॥४६॥
46. sūtaputrastvasaṁbhrānto rudropendrendravikramaḥ ,
ghaṭotkacarathaṁ tūrṇaṁ chādayāmāsa patribhiḥ.

46. But the son of the charioteer (Karṇa), undisturbed and possessing the valor of Rudra, Upendra (Viṣṇu), and Indra, quickly covered Ghaṭotkaca's chariot with arrows.
घटोत्कचेन क्रुद्धेन गदा हेमाङ्गदा तदा ।
क्षिप्ता भ्राम्य शरैः सापि कर्णेनाभ्याहतापतत् ॥४७॥
47. ghaṭotkacena kruddhena gadā hemāṅgadā tadā ,
kṣiptā bhrāmya śaraiḥ sāpi karṇenābhyāhatāpatat.

47. Then, the enraged Ghaṭotkaca hurled a mace adorned with gold. But even that mace, whirling, was struck by Karṇa's arrows and fell to the ground.
ततोऽन्तरिक्षमुत्पत्य कालमेघ इवोन्नदन् ।
प्रववर्ष महाकायो द्रुमवर्षं नभस्तलात् ॥४८॥
48. tato'ntarikṣamutpatya kālamegha ivonnadan ,
pravavarṣa mahākāyo drumavarṣaṁ nabhastalāt.
48. tataḥ antarikṣam utpatya kālameghaḥ iva unnadan
pravavarṣa mahākāyaḥ drumavarṣam nabhastalāt

48. Then, the huge-bodied (Ghaṭotkaca), having flown up into the sky and roaring like a cloud of doom, showered down trees from the sky.
ततो मायाविनं कर्णो भीमसेनसुतं दिवि ।
मार्गणैरभिविव्याध घनं सूर्य इवांशुभिः ॥४९॥
49. tato māyāvinaṁ karṇo bhīmasenasutaṁ divi ,
mārgaṇairabhivivyādha ghanaṁ sūrya ivāṁśubhiḥ.

mārgaṇaiḥ abhivivyādha ghanam sūryaḥ iva aṃśubhiḥ

49. Then, Karṇa pierced the illusionist (māyāvin), Bhīmasena's son, who was in the sky, with arrows, just as the sun penetrates a cloud with its rays.
तस्य सर्वान्हयान्हत्वा संछिद्य शतधा रथम् ।
अभ्यवर्षच्छरैः कर्णः पर्जन्य इव वृष्टिमान् ॥५०॥
50. tasya sarvānhayānhatvā saṁchidya śatadhā ratham ,
abhyavarṣaccharaiḥ karṇaḥ parjanya iva vṛṣṭimān.

50. Having killed all of his horses and having cut his chariot into a hundred pieces, Karṇa then showered (Ghaṭotkaca) with arrows, just like a rain-cloud (parjanya) showers rain.
न चास्यासीदनिर्भिन्नं गात्रे द्व्यङ्गुलमन्तरम् ।
सोऽदृश्यत मुहूर्तेन श्वाविच्छललितो यथा ॥५१॥
51. na cāsyāsīdanirbhinnaṁ gātre dvyaṅgulamantaram ,
so'dṛśyata muhūrtena śvāvicchalalito yathā.
51. na ca asya āsīt anirbhinnam gātre dvyaṅgulam antaram
saḥ adṛśyata muhūrtena śvāvit chalalitaḥ yathā

51. And there was no unpierced space of two fingers on his body. In a moment, he appeared like a porcupine (covered in quills).
न हयान्न रथं तस्य न ध्वजं न घटोत्कचम् ।
दृष्टवन्तः स्म समरे शरौघैरभिसंवृतम् ॥५२॥
52. na hayānna rathaṁ tasya na dhvajaṁ na ghaṭotkacam ,
dṛṣṭavantaḥ sma samare śaraughairabhisaṁvṛtam.

52. We did not see his horses, chariot, banner, or even Ghatotkacha (himself) in battle, as he was completely enveloped by showers of arrows.
स तु कर्णस्य तद्दिव्यमस्त्रमस्त्रेण शातयन् ।
मायायुद्धेन मायावी सूतपुत्रमयोधयत् ॥५३॥
53. sa tu karṇasya taddivyamastramastreṇa śātayan ,
māyāyuddhena māyāvī sūtaputramayodhayat.

53. But he (Ghatotkacha), the master of illusion (māyā), neutralized that divine weapon of Karna with his own weapon, and fought the son of Sūta (Karna) by means of magical warfare (māyā).
सोऽयोधयत्तदा कर्णं मायया लाघवेन च ।
अलक्ष्यमाणोऽथ दिवि शरजालेषु संपतन् ॥५४॥
54. so'yodhayattadā karṇaṁ māyayā lāghavena ca ,
alakṣyamāṇo'tha divi śarajāleṣu saṁpatan.

54. Then he fought Karna with (his) illusion (māyā) and agility, becoming unperceived and rushing amidst showers of arrows in the sky.
भैमसेनिर्महामायो मायया कुरुसत्तम ।
प्रचकार महामायां मोहयन्निव भारत ॥५५॥
55. bhaimasenirmahāmāyo māyayā kurusattama ,
pracakāra mahāmāyāṁ mohayanniva bhārata.

55. O best among the Kurus (kuru-sattama), O descendant of Bharata, Bhīmasena's son (bhaimaseni), who was a great master of illusion (mahāmāya), manifested a great illusion (māyā) through his magical power, as if bewildering [his opponents].
स स्म कृत्वा विरूपाणि वदनान्यशुभाननः ।
अग्रसत्सूतपुत्रस्य दिव्यान्यस्त्राणि मायया ॥५६॥
56. sa sma kṛtvā virūpāṇi vadanānyaśubhānanaḥ ,
agrasatsūtaputrasya divyānyastrāṇi māyayā.

56. He (sa), who had an ominous face (aśubhānana), repeatedly created (kṛtvā sma) many deformed visages (virūpāṇi vadanāni) and by his magical power (māyā), he swallowed (agrasat) the divine weapons (divyāni astrāṇi) of the son of the charioteer (sūta-putrasya).
पुनश्चापि महाकायः संछिन्नः शतधा रणे ।
गतसत्त्वो निरुत्साहः पतितः खाद्व्यदृश्यत ।
हतं तं मन्यमानाः स्म प्राणदन्कुरुपुंगवाः ॥५७॥
57. punaścāpi mahākāyaḥ saṁchinnaḥ śatadhā raṇe ,
gatasattvo nirutsāhaḥ patitaḥ khādvyadṛśyata ,
hataṁ taṁ manyamānāḥ sma prāṇadankurupuṁgavāḥ.

57. Again (punaḥ ca api), the great-bodied (mahākāya) [Ghatotkacha], even though he was cut into a hundred pieces (saṃchinnaḥ śatadhā) in battle (raṇe), was seen (vyadṛśyata) to have lost his vitality (gata-sattvaḥ), become dispirited (nirutsāhaḥ), and fallen (patitaḥ) from the sky (khāt). The chiefs of the Kurus (kuru-puṅgavāḥ), believing him (tam) to be dead (hatam), then roared (prāṇadan sma) [in exultation].
अथ देहैर्नवैरन्यैर्दिक्षु सर्वास्वदृश्यत ।
पुनश्चापि महाकायः शतशीर्षः शतोदरः ॥५८॥
58. atha dehairnavairanyairdikṣu sarvāsvadṛśyata ,
punaścāpi mahākāyaḥ śataśīrṣaḥ śatodaraḥ.

58. Then (atha), he was seen (adṛśyata) with other (anyaiḥ), new (navaiḥ) bodies (dehaiḥ) in all directions (dikṣu sarvāsu). And again (punaḥ ca api), he appeared as a great-bodied (mahākāya), hundred-headed (śata-śīrṣa), and hundred-bellied (śata-udara) being.
व्यदृश्यत महाबाहुर्मैनाक इव पर्वतः ।
अङ्गुष्ठमात्रो भूत्वा च पुनरेव स राक्षसः ।
सागरोर्मिरिवोद्धूतस्तिर्यगूर्ध्वमवर्तत ॥५९॥
59. vyadṛśyata mahābāhurmaināka iva parvataḥ ,
aṅguṣṭhamātro bhūtvā ca punareva sa rākṣasaḥ ,
sāgarormirivoddhūtastiryagūrdhvamavartata.

59. The mighty-armed demon appeared like Mount Mainaka. Then, having become merely thumb-sized, that very demon again moved sideways and upwards, as if tossed up like an ocean wave.
वसुधां दारयित्वा च पुनरप्सु न्यमज्जत ।
अदृश्यत तदा तत्र पुनरुन्मज्जितोऽन्यतः ॥६०॥
60. vasudhāṁ dārayitvā ca punarapsu nyamajjata ,
adṛśyata tadā tatra punarunmajjito'nyataḥ.

60. And, having split the earth, he again plunged into the waters. Then, he reappeared there, having emerged from a different place.
सोऽवतीर्य पुनस्तस्थौ रथे हेमपरिष्कृते ।
क्षितिं द्यां च दिशश्चैव माययावृत्य दंशितः ॥६१॥
61. so'vatīrya punastasthau rathe hemapariṣkṛte ,
kṣitiṁ dyāṁ ca diśaścaiva māyayāvṛtya daṁśitaḥ.

kṣitim dyām ca diśaḥ ca eva māyayā āvṛtya daṃśitaḥ

61. Having descended, he again stood in a gold-adorned chariot. Armed, he enveloped the earth, the sky, and all directions with his illusion (māyā).
गत्वा कर्णरथाभ्याशं विचलत्कुण्डलाननः ।
प्राह वाक्यमसंभ्रान्तः सूतपुत्रं विशां पते ॥६२॥
62. gatvā karṇarathābhyāśaṁ vicalatkuṇḍalānanaḥ ,
prāha vākyamasaṁbhrāntaḥ sūtaputraṁ viśāṁ pate.

62. Approaching Karna's chariot, with his face adorned by shaking earrings, he, undisturbed, spoke these words to Karna, the son of Sūta, O lord of the people.
तिष्ठेदानीं न मे जीवन्सूतपुत्र गमिष्यसि ।
युद्धश्रद्धामहं तेऽद्य विनेष्यामि रणाजिरे ॥६३॥
63. tiṣṭhedānīṁ na me jīvansūtaputra gamiṣyasi ,
yuddhaśraddhāmahaṁ te'dya vineṣyāmi raṇājire.
63. tiṣṭha idānīm na me jīvan sūtaputra gamiṣyasi
yuddhaśraddhām aham te adya vineṣyāmi raṇājire

63. Stop now. You, son of a charioteer, will not go on living because of me. Today, on the battlefield, I will destroy your desire for battle (śraddhā).
इत्युक्त्वा रोषताम्राक्षं रक्षः क्रूरपराक्रमम् ।
उत्पपातान्तरिक्षं च जहास च सुविस्वरम् ।
कर्णमभ्याहनच्चैव गजेन्द्रमिव केसरी ॥६४॥
64. ityuktvā roṣatāmrākṣaṁ rakṣaḥ krūraparākramam ,
utpapātāntarikṣaṁ ca jahāsa ca suvisvaram ,
karṇamabhyāhanaccaiva gajendramiva kesarī.

64. Having said this, the fierce Rakṣasa, whose eyes were red with anger, flew into the sky and laughed loudly. He then struck Karṇa, just as a lion strikes a great elephant.
रथाक्षमात्रैरिषुभिरभ्यवर्षद्घटोत्कचः ।
रथिनामृषभं कर्णं धाराभिरिव तोयदः ।
शरवृष्टिं च तां कर्णो दूरप्राप्तामशातयत् ॥६५॥
65. rathākṣamātrairiṣubhirabhyavarṣadghaṭotkacaḥ ,
rathināmṛṣabhaṁ karṇaṁ dhārābhiriva toyadaḥ ,
śaravṛṣṭiṁ ca tāṁ karṇo dūraprāptāmaśātayat.

65. Ghaṭotkaca rained down arrows, each the size of a chariot wheel, upon Karṇa, the foremost among charioteers, just as a cloud (toyada) showers rain. But Karṇa destroyed that shower of arrows even as it approached from afar.
दृष्ट्वा च विहतां मायां कर्णेन भरतर्षभ ।
घटोत्कचस्ततो मायां ससर्जान्तर्हितः पुनः ॥६६॥
66. dṛṣṭvā ca vihatāṁ māyāṁ karṇena bharatarṣabha ,
ghaṭotkacastato māyāṁ sasarjāntarhitaḥ punaḥ.

66. O best of Bharatas (bharatarṣabha), seeing his illusion (māyā) thwarted by Karṇa, Ghaṭotkaca then, having become invisible, created another illusion (māyā).
सोऽभवद्गिरिरित्युच्चः शिखरैस्तरुसंकटैः ।
शूलप्रासासिमुसलजलप्रस्रवणो महान् ॥६७॥
67. so'bhavadgirirityuccaḥ śikharaistarusaṁkaṭaiḥ ,
śūlaprāsāsimusalajalaprasravaṇo mahān.

67. He (the demon) then became a towering mountain, its peaks densely covered with trees. From it flowed spears, javelins, swords, maces, and copious streams of water; it was truly mighty.
तमञ्जनचयप्रख्यं कर्णो दृष्ट्वा महीधरम् ।
प्रपातैरायुधान्युग्राण्युद्वहन्तं न चुक्षुभे ॥६८॥
68. tamañjanacayaprakhyaṁ karṇo dṛṣṭvā mahīdharam ,
prapātairāyudhānyugrāṇyudvahantaṁ na cukṣubhe.

68. Karna, upon seeing that mountain - which resembled a heap of collyrium and from whose cascades terrible weapons poured forth - remained undisturbed.
स्मयन्निव ततः कर्णो दिव्यमस्त्रमुदीरयत् ।
ततः सोऽस्त्रेण शैलेन्द्रो विक्षिप्तो वै व्यनश्यत ॥६९॥
69. smayanniva tataḥ karṇo divyamastramudīrayat ,
tataḥ so'streṇa śailendro vikṣipto vai vyanaśyata.

69. Then, as if smiling, Karna invoked a divine weapon. Thereupon, that great mountain, struck by the weapon, was completely destroyed.
ततः स तोयदो भूत्वा नीलः सेन्द्रायुधो दिवि ।
अश्मवृष्टिभिरत्युग्रः सूतपुत्रमवाकिरत् ॥७०॥
70. tataḥ sa toyado bhūtvā nīlaḥ sendrāyudho divi ,
aśmavṛṣṭibhiratyugraḥ sūtaputramavākirat.

70. Then, that (mountain) transformed into a fierce blue cloud in the sky, complete with a rainbow, and began to assail Karna, the son of Sūta, with exceedingly terrible showers of stones.
अथ संधाय वायव्यमस्त्रमस्त्रविदां वरः ।
व्यधमत्कालमेघं तं कर्णो वैकर्तनो वृषा ॥७१॥
71. atha saṁdhāya vāyavyamastramastravidāṁ varaḥ ,
vyadhamatkālameghaṁ taṁ karṇo vaikartano vṛṣā.

71. Then, Karṇa, the foremost among those skilled in weapons, the powerful (vṛṣā) son of Sūrya (Vaikartana), having invoked the wind-weapon, dispersed that dark cloud.
स मार्गणगणैः कर्णो दिशः प्रच्छाद्य सर्वशः ।
जघानास्त्रं महाराज घटोत्कचसमीरितम् ॥७२॥
72. sa mārgaṇagaṇaiḥ karṇo diśaḥ pracchādya sarvaśaḥ ,
jaghānāstraṁ mahārāja ghaṭotkacasamīritam.

72. O great king, Karṇa, having completely enveloped all directions with his multitude of arrows, struck down the weapon that had been discharged by Ghaṭotkaca.
ततः प्रहस्य समरे भैमसेनिर्महाबलः ।
प्रादुश्चक्रे महामायां कर्णं प्रति महारथम् ॥७३॥
73. tataḥ prahasya samare bhaimasenirmahābalaḥ ,
prāduścakre mahāmāyāṁ karṇaṁ prati mahāratham.

73. Then, the immensely powerful son of Bhīmasena (Ghaṭotkaca), laughing loudly in the midst of battle, manifested a great illusion (māyā) against the great warrior Karṇa.
स दृष्ट्वा पुनरायान्तं रथेन रथिनां वरम् ।
घटोत्कचमसंभ्रान्तं राक्षसैर्बहुभिर्वृतम् ॥७४॥
74. sa dṛṣṭvā punarāyāntaṁ rathena rathināṁ varam ,
ghaṭotkacamasaṁbhrāntaṁ rākṣasairbahubhirvṛtam.

74. Having seen Ghaṭotkaca, the foremost of charioteers, again approaching in his chariot - undisturbed and surrounded by many demons - (Karṇa then...)
सिंहशार्दूलसदृशैर्मत्तद्विरदविक्रमैः ।
गजस्थैश्च रथस्थैश्च वाजिपृष्ठगतैस्तथा ॥७५॥
75. siṁhaśārdūlasadṛśairmattadviradavikramaiḥ ,
gajasthaiśca rathasthaiśca vājipṛṣṭhagataistathā.

75. They were like lions and tigers, possessing the prowess of rutting elephants, stationed on elephants, and on chariots, and similarly, mounted on horses.
नानाशस्त्रधरैर्घोरैर्नानाकवचभूषणैः ।
वृतं घटोत्कचं क्रूरैर्मरुद्भिरिव वासवम् ।
दृष्ट्वा कर्णो महेष्वासो योधयामास राक्षसम् ॥७६॥
76. nānāśastradharairghorairnānākavacabhūṣaṇaiḥ ,
vṛtaṁ ghaṭotkacaṁ krūrairmarudbhiriva vāsavam ,
dṛṣṭvā karṇo maheṣvāso yodhayāmāsa rākṣasam.

76. Having seen Ghatotkaca (ghaṭotkaca) surrounded by terrible (ghora) warriors bearing various weapons and adorned with diverse armors, just as Indra (Vāsava) is surrounded by fierce Maruts, Karṇa, the great archer, fought the Rākṣasa (rākṣasa).
घटोत्कचस्ततः कर्णं विद्ध्वा पञ्चभिराशुगैः ।
ननाद भैरवं नादं भीषयन्सर्वपार्थिवान् ॥७७॥
77. ghaṭotkacastataḥ karṇaṁ viddhvā pañcabhirāśugaiḥ ,
nanāda bhairavaṁ nādaṁ bhīṣayansarvapārthivān.

77. Then Ghatotkaca, having pierced Karṇa with five swift arrows, let out a terrible roar, terrifying all the kings.
भूयश्चाञ्जलिकेनाथ समार्गणगणं महत् ।
कर्णहस्तस्थितं चापं चिच्छेदाशु घटोत्कचः ॥७८॥
78. bhūyaścāñjalikenātha samārgaṇagaṇaṁ mahat ,
karṇahastasthitaṁ cāpaṁ cicchedāśu ghaṭotkacaḥ.

78. And again, Ghatotkaca quickly cut the great bow, along with its multitude of arrows, that was situated in Karṇa's hand, using the Añjalika (arrow).
अथान्यद्धनुरादाय दृढं भारसहं महत् ।
व्यकर्षत बलात्कर्ण इन्द्रायुधमिवोच्छ्रितम् ॥७९॥
79. athānyaddhanurādāya dṛḍhaṁ bhārasahaṁ mahat ,
vyakarṣata balātkarṇa indrāyudhamivocchritam.

79. Then, Karna, taking another bow that was strong, mighty, and capable of enduring strain, forcefully drew it, just like a prominently raised rainbow (indrāyudha).
ततः कर्णो महाराज प्रेषयामास सायकान् ।
सुवर्णपुङ्खाञ्शत्रुघ्नान्खचरान्राक्षसान्प्रति ॥८०॥
80. tataḥ karṇo mahārāja preṣayāmāsa sāyakān ,
suvarṇapuṅkhāñśatrughnānkhacarānrākṣasānprati.

80. Then, O great king, Karna dispatched golden-shafted, enemy-slaying, sky-faring arrows towards the Rākṣasas.
तद्बाणैरर्दितं यूथं रक्षसां पीनवक्षसाम् ।
सिंहेनेवार्दितं वन्यं गजानामाकुलं कुलम् ॥८१॥
81. tadbāṇairarditaṁ yūthaṁ rakṣasāṁ pīnavakṣasām ,
siṁhenevārditaṁ vanyaṁ gajānāmākulaṁ kulam.

siṃhena iva arditam vanyam gajānām ākulam kulam
81. That host of stout-chested Rākṣasas, tormented by those arrows, became agitated, much like a wild herd of elephants (gaja) disturbed by a lion.
विधम्य राक्षसान्बाणैः साश्वसूतगजान्विभुः ।
ददाह भगवान्वह्निर्भूतानीव युगक्षये ॥८२॥
82. vidhamya rākṣasānbāṇaiḥ sāśvasūtagajānvibhuḥ ,
dadāha bhagavānvahnirbhūtānīva yugakṣaye.

82. Having shattered the Rākṣasas, along with their horses, charioteers, and elephants, with arrows, the mighty one (Karna) then burned them up, just as the revered fire (vahni) consumes all beings (bhūta) at the dissolution of an eon.
स हत्वा राक्षसीं सेनां शुशुभे सूतनन्दनः ।
पुरेव त्रिपुरं दग्ध्वा दिवि देवो महेश्वरः ॥८३॥
83. sa hatvā rākṣasīṁ senāṁ śuśubhe sūtanandanaḥ ,
pureva tripuraṁ dagdhvā divi devo maheśvaraḥ.

83. Having slain the demonic army, Karṇa (the son of Sūta) shone splendidly, just as the god Maheśvara (Śiva) once shone in heaven after burning the triple city (Tripura).
तेषु राजसहस्रेषु पाण्डवेयेषु मारिष ।
नैनं निरीक्षितुमपि कश्चिच्छक्नोति पार्थिव ॥८४॥
84. teṣu rājasahasreṣu pāṇḍaveyeṣu māriṣa ,
nainaṁ nirīkṣitumapi kaścicchaknoti pārthiva.

84. O respectable one (māriṣa), O king (pārthiva), among those thousands of kings and even among the Pāṇḍavas, no one is able to even look at him.
ऋते घटोत्कचाद्राजन्राक्षसेन्द्रान्महाबलात् ।
भीमवीर्यबलोपेतात्क्रुद्धाद्वैवस्वतादिव ॥८५॥
85. ṛte ghaṭotkacādrājanrākṣasendrānmahābalāt ,
bhīmavīryabalopetātkruddhādvaivasvatādiva.

85. No one, O king, is able to look at him (Ghatotkaca) except for Ghatotkaca himself - that chief of rākṣasas, who is immensely strong and endowed with terrifying valor and might, like an enraged Yama (Vaivasvata).
तस्य क्रुद्धस्य नेत्राभ्यां पावकः समजायत ।
महोल्काभ्यां यथा राजन्सार्चिषः स्नेहबिन्दवः ॥८६॥
86. tasya kruddhasya netrābhyāṁ pāvakaḥ samajāyata ,
maholkābhyāṁ yathā rājansārciṣaḥ snehabindavaḥ.

86. From his (Ghatotkaca's) enraged eyes, fire sprang forth, O king, just as flaming drops of burning oil (or sparks) would issue from two great fiery meteors.
तलं तलेन संहत्य संदश्य दशनच्छदम् ।
रथमास्थाय च पुनर्मायया निर्मितं पुनः ॥८७॥
87. talaṁ talena saṁhatya saṁdaśya daśanacchadam ,
rathamāsthāya ca punarmāyayā nirmitaṁ punaḥ.

87. Having pressed one palm with the other, and biting his lip, he then again mounted the chariot which was again created by (illusory power) māyā.
युक्तं गजनिभैर्वाहैः पिशाचवदनैः खरैः ।
स सूतमब्रवीत्क्रुद्धः सूतपुत्राय मा वह ॥८८॥
88. yuktaṁ gajanibhairvāhaiḥ piśācavadanaiḥ kharaiḥ ,
sa sūtamabravītkruddhaḥ sūtaputrāya mā vaha.

88. That chariot was equipped with elephant-like steeds and demon-faced donkeys. He, enraged, said to the charioteer, "Do not drive me towards the son of Sūta (Karna)."
स ययौ घोररूपेण रथेन रथिनां वरः ।
द्वैरथं सूतपुत्रेण पुनरेव विशां पते ॥८९॥
89. sa yayau ghorarūpeṇa rathena rathināṁ varaḥ ,
dvairathaṁ sūtaputreṇa punareva viśāṁ pate.

89. O lord of the people, he, the best of charioteers, again indeed went forth with his terrifying-looking chariot for a duel with the son of Sūta (Karna).
स चिक्षेप पुनः क्रुद्धः सूतपुत्राय राक्षसः ।
अष्टचक्रां महाघोरामशनिं रुद्रनिर्मिताम् ॥९०॥
90. sa cikṣepa punaḥ kruddhaḥ sūtaputrāya rākṣasaḥ ,
aṣṭacakrāṁ mahāghorāmaśaniṁ rudranirmitām.

90. That enraged Rākṣasa again hurled at the son of Sūta (Karna) an extremely terrible, eight-wheeled thunderbolt (aśani) that had been created by Rudra.
तामवप्लुत्य जग्राह कर्णो न्यस्य रथे धनुः ।
चिक्षेप चैनां तस्यैव स्यन्दनात्सोऽवपुप्लुवे ॥९१॥
91. tāmavaplutya jagrāha karṇo nyasya rathe dhanuḥ ,
cikṣepa caināṁ tasyaiva syandanātso'vapupluve.

91. Leaping down, Karṇa seized it (the missile), having first placed his bow on his chariot. He then hurled it back, and from that very chariot, the enemy (Ghatotkacha) leaped off.
साश्वसूतध्वजं यानं भस्म कृत्वा महाप्रभा ।
विवेश वसुधां भित्त्वा सुरास्तत्र विसिस्मियुः ॥९२॥
92. sāśvasūtadhvajaṁ yānaṁ bhasma kṛtvā mahāprabhā ,
viveśa vasudhāṁ bhittvā surāstatra visismiyuḥ.

92. That missile of great splendor, having reduced the chariot, along with its horses, charioteer, and banner, to ashes, then split the earth and entered it. There, the gods were greatly astonished.
कर्णं तु सर्वभूतानि पूजयामासुरञ्जसा ।
यदवप्लुत्य जग्राह देवसृष्टां महाशनिम् ॥९३॥
93. karṇaṁ tu sarvabhūtāni pūjayāmāsurañjasā ,
yadavaplutya jagrāha devasṛṣṭāṁ mahāśanim.

93. Indeed, all beings truly honored Karṇa, because he had leaped down and seized the great divine missile (mahāśani).
एवं कृत्वा रणे कर्ण आरुरोह रथं पुनः ।
ततो मुमोच नाराचान्सूतपुत्रः परंतपः ॥९४॥
94. evaṁ kṛtvā raṇe karṇa āruroha rathaṁ punaḥ ,
tato mumoca nārācānsūtaputraḥ paraṁtapaḥ.

94. Having thus acted in battle, Karṇa again mounted his chariot. Then, the son of Sūta, the tormentor of foes, released his iron arrows.
अशक्यं कर्तुमन्येन सर्वभूतेषु मानद ।
यदकार्षीत्तदा कर्णः संग्रामे भीमदर्शने ॥९५॥
95. aśakyaṁ kartumanyena sarvabhūteṣu mānada ,
yadakārṣīttadā karṇaḥ saṁgrāme bhīmadarśane.

yat akārṣīt tadā karṇaḥ saṃgrāme bhīmadarśane

95. O bestower of honor, what Karṇa accomplished in that terrifying battle was impossible for any other being among all creatures to achieve.
स हन्यमानो नाराचैर्धाराभिरिव पर्वतः ।
गन्धर्वनगराकारः पुनरन्तरधीयत ॥९६॥
96. sa hanyamāno nārācairdhārābhiriva parvataḥ ,
gandharvanagarākāraḥ punarantaradhīyata.
96. saḥ hanyamānaḥ nārācaiḥ dhārābhiḥ iva parvataḥ
gandharvanagarākāraḥ punaḥ antaradhīyata

96. He, being struck by arrows like a mountain (is struck) by torrents (of rain), disappeared again, appearing like a city of the Gandharvas (gandharvanagarākāra).
एवं स वै महामायो मायया लाघवेन च ।
अस्त्राणि तानि दिव्यानि जघान रिपुसूदनः ॥९७॥
97. evaṁ sa vai mahāmāyo māyayā lāghavena ca ,
astrāṇi tāni divyāni jaghāna ripusūdanaḥ.

astrāṇi tāni divyāni jaghāna ripusūdanaḥ

97. Thus, that great master of illusion (mahāmāyaḥ), the slayer of enemies (ripusūdanaḥ), indeed destroyed those divine weapons by means of his illusion (māyā) and agility.
निहन्यमानेष्वस्त्रेषु मायया तेन रक्षसा ।
असंभ्रान्तस्ततः कर्णस्तद्रक्षः प्रत्ययुध्यत ॥९८॥
98. nihanyamāneṣvastreṣu māyayā tena rakṣasā ,
asaṁbhrāntastataḥ karṇastadrakṣaḥ pratyayudhyata.

98. While those weapons were being counteracted by that Rākṣasa's illusion (māyā), Karṇa, remaining undismayed, then fought back against that demon.
ततः क्रुद्धो महाराज भैमसेनिर्महाबलः ।
चकार बहुधात्मानं भीषयाणो नराधिपान् ॥९९॥
99. tataḥ kruddho mahārāja bhaimasenirmahābalaḥ ,
cakāra bahudhātmānaṁ bhīṣayāṇo narādhipān.

99. Then, O great king, the mighty son of Bhīmasena, enraged, transformed himself into many forms, terrifying the rulers.
ततो दिग्भ्यः समापेतुः सिंहव्याघ्रतरक्षवः ।
अग्निजिह्वाश्च भुजगा विहगाश्चाप्ययोमुखाः ॥१००॥
100. tato digbhyaḥ samāpetuḥ siṁhavyāghratarakṣavaḥ ,
agnijihvāśca bhujagā vihagāścāpyayomukhāḥ.

100. Then, from all directions, gathered lions, tigers, and hyenas; and serpents with fiery tongues; and also birds with iron beaks.
स कीर्यमाणो निशितैः कर्णचापच्युतैः शरैः ।
नगराद्रिवनप्रख्यस्तत्रैवान्तरधीयत ॥१०१॥
101. sa kīryamāṇo niśitaiḥ karṇacāpacyutaiḥ śaraiḥ ,
nagarādrivanaprakhyastatraivāntaradhīyata.

101. He, appearing like a city, mountain, or forest, being covered by the sharp arrows released from Karṇa's bow, disappeared right there.
राक्षसाश्च पिशाचाश्च यातुधानाः शलावृकाः ।
ते कर्णं भक्षयिष्यन्तः सर्वतः समुपाद्रवन् ।
अथैनं वाग्भिरुग्राभिस्त्रासयां चक्रिरे तदा ॥१०२॥
102. rākṣasāśca piśācāśca yātudhānāḥ śalāvṛkāḥ ,
te karṇaṁ bhakṣayiṣyantaḥ sarvataḥ samupādravan ,
athainaṁ vāgbhirugrābhistrāsayāṁ cakrire tadā.

śalāvṛkāḥ te karṇaṃ bhakṣayiṣyantaḥ

102. Rākṣasas, Piśācas, Yātudhānas, and Śalāvṛkas - they rushed from all sides, intending to devour Karṇa. Then, at that time, they terrified him with fierce words.
उद्यतैर्बहुभिर्घोरैरायुधैः शोणितोक्षितैः ।
तेषामनेकैरेकैकं कर्णो विव्याध चाशुगैः ॥१०३॥
103. udyatairbahubhirghorairāyudhaiḥ śoṇitokṣitaiḥ ,
teṣāmanekairekaikaṁ karṇo vivyādha cāśugaiḥ.
103. udyataiḥ bahubhiḥ ghoraiḥ āyudhaiḥ śoṇitaukṣitaiḥ
teṣām anekaiḥ ekaikam karṇaḥ vivyādha ca āśugaiḥ
103. karṇaḥ teṣām ekaikam udyataiḥ bahubhiḥ ghoraiḥ
śoṇitaukṣitaiḥ āyudhaiḥ ca anekaiḥ āśugaiḥ vivyādha
103. Karna pierced each one of them with many swift arrows, even as they stood with many dreadful weapons raised and stained with blood.
प्रतिहत्य तु तां मायां दिव्येनास्त्रेण राक्षसीम् ।
आजघान हयानस्य शरैः संनतपर्वभिः ॥१०४॥
104. pratihatya tu tāṁ māyāṁ divyenāstreṇa rākṣasīm ,
ājaghāna hayānasya śaraiḥ saṁnataparvabhiḥ.
104. pratihatya tu tām māyām divyena astreṇa rākṣasīm
ājaghāna hayān asya śaraiḥ sannataparvabhiḥ
104. tu divyena astreṇa tām rākṣasīm māyām pratihatya,
(saḥ) asya hayān sannataparvabhiḥ śaraiḥ ājaghāna
104. But, having repelled that demonic illusion (māyā) with a divine weapon, he struck down his horses with arrows having strong, bent joints.
ते भग्ना विकृताङ्गाश्च छिन्नपृष्ठाश्च सायकैः ।
वसुधामन्वपद्यन्त पश्यतस्तस्य रक्षसः ॥१०५॥
105. te bhagnā vikṛtāṅgāśca chinnapṛṣṭhāśca sāyakaiḥ ,
vasudhāmanvapadyanta paśyatastasya rakṣasaḥ.

105. Broken, with distorted limbs, and with broken backs by the arrows, they fell upon the earth while that demon was watching.
स भग्नमायो हैडिम्बः कर्णं वैकर्तनं ततः ।
एष ते विदधे मृत्युमित्युक्त्वान्तरधीयत ॥१०६॥
106. sa bhagnamāyo haiḍimbaḥ karṇaṁ vaikartanaṁ tataḥ ,
eṣa te vidadhe mṛtyumityuktvāntaradhīyata.
106. saḥ bhagnamāyaḥ haiḍimbaḥ karṇam vaikartanam tataḥ
eṣaḥ te vidadhe mṛtyum iti uktvā antaradhīyata

"eṣaḥ te mṛtyum vidadhe" iti uktvā antaradhīyata
106. Then, that son of Hiḍimbā (Haiḍimba), whose illusion (māyā) was broken, having said to Karna, the son of Vikartana, "I shall inflict this death upon you!" thus disappeared.
