अथ वीरो महेष्वासो मत्तवारणविक्रमः ।
समादाय महच्चापं मत्तवारणवारणम् ॥१॥

1. Sañjaya said: Then, the hero, a great archer, possessing the valor of a rutting elephant, having taken up a mighty bow, one capable of restraining rutting elephants.
विधुन्वानो धनुः श्रेष्ठं द्रावयाणो महारथान् ।
पृतनां पाण्डवेयानां पातयानो महारथः ॥२॥
2. vidhunvāno dhanuḥ śreṣṭhaṁ drāvayāṇo mahārathān ,
pṛtanāṁ pāṇḍaveyānāṁ pātayāno mahārathaḥ.

2. Brandishing his excellent bow, routing the great charioteers, and striking down the army of the Pāṇḍavas, that great charioteer.
निमित्तानि निमित्तज्ञः सर्वतो वीक्ष्य वीर्यवान् ।
प्रतपन्तमनीकानि द्रोणः पुत्रमभाषत ॥३॥
3. nimittāni nimittajñaḥ sarvato vīkṣya vīryavān ,
pratapantamanīkāni droṇaḥ putramabhāṣata.

3. The valorous Drona, an expert in omens, observed signs all around him and spoke to his son, who was then scorching the enemy armies.
अयं स दिवसस्तात यत्र पार्थो महारथः ।
जिघांसुः समरे भीष्मं परं यत्नं करिष्यति ॥४॥
4. ayaṁ sa divasastāta yatra pārtho mahārathaḥ ,
jighāṁsuḥ samare bhīṣmaṁ paraṁ yatnaṁ kariṣyati.
4. ayam saḥ divasaḥ tāta yatra pārthaḥ mahārathaḥ
jighāṃsuḥ samare bhīṣmam param yatnam kariṣyati
4. tāta ayam saḥ divasaḥ yatra mahārathaḥ pārthaḥ

4. My son, this is the very day when Arjuna (Pārtha), the great warrior, will exert his utmost effort in battle, eager to slay Bhishma.
उत्पतन्ति हि मे बाणा धनुः प्रस्फुरतीव मे ।
योगमस्त्राणि गच्छन्ति क्रूरे मे वर्तते मतिः ॥५॥
5. utpatanti hi me bāṇā dhanuḥ prasphuratīva me ,
yogamastrāṇi gacchanti krūre me vartate matiḥ.

5. Indeed, my arrows are soaring, and my bow quivers as if on its own. My weapons are ready for action, and my resolve (mati) is fixed on a fierce outcome.
दिक्षु शान्तासु घोराणि व्याहरन्ति मृगद्विजाः ।
नीचैर्गृध्रा निलीयन्ते भारतानां चमूं प्रति ॥६॥
6. dikṣu śāntāsu ghorāṇi vyāharanti mṛgadvijāḥ ,
nīcairgṛdhrā nilīyante bhāratānāṁ camūṁ prati.
6. dikṣu śāntāsu ghorāṇi vyāharanti mṛgadvijāḥ
nīcaiḥ gṛdhrāḥ nilīyante bhāratānām camūm prati

6. Although the directions (quarters of the sky) are calm, animals and birds are uttering dreadful cries. Vultures are settling low, lurking near the army of the Bhāratas.
नष्टप्रभ इवादित्यः सर्वतो लोहिता दिशः ।
रसते व्यथते भूमिरनुष्टनति वाहनम् ॥७॥
7. naṣṭaprabha ivādityaḥ sarvato lohitā diśaḥ ,
rasate vyathate bhūmiranuṣṭanati vāhanam.

diśaḥ rasate vyathate bhūmiḥ anuṣṭanati vāhanam

7. The sun appears to have lost its radiance, and all directions are crimson. The earth rumbles and trembles, and the mounts groan.
कङ्का गृध्रा बलाकाश्च व्याहरन्ति मुहुर्मुहुः ।
शिवाश्चाशिवनिर्घोषा वेदयन्त्यो महद्भयम् ॥८॥
8. kaṅkā gṛdhrā balākāśca vyāharanti muhurmuhuḥ ,
śivāścāśivanirghoṣā vedayantyo mahadbhayam.
8. kaṅkāḥ gṛdhrāḥ balākāḥ ca vyāharanti muhuḥ muhuḥ
śivāḥ ca aśivanirghoṣāḥ vedayantyaḥ mahat bhayam

8. Herons, vultures, and cranes cry out again and again. And jackals, with their ominous howls, forebode great terror.
पपात महती चोल्का मध्येनादित्यमण्डलात् ।
सकबन्धश्च परिघो भानुमावृत्य तिष्ठति ॥९॥
9. papāta mahatī colkā madhyenādityamaṇḍalāt ,
sakabandhaśca parigho bhānumāvṛtya tiṣṭhati.
9. papāta mahatī ca ulkā madhyena ādityamaṇḍalāt
sakabandhaḥ ca parighaḥ bhānum āvṛtya tiṣṭhati

9. A massive meteor fell from the center of the solar disc. And a headless trunk, and a meteoric phenomenon, stands obscuring the sun.
परिवेषस्तथा घोरश्चन्द्रभास्करयोरभूत् ।
वेदयानो भयं घोरं राज्ञां देहावकर्तनम् ॥१०॥
10. pariveṣastathā ghoraścandrabhāskarayorabhūt ,
vedayāno bhayaṁ ghoraṁ rājñāṁ dehāvakartanam.
10. pariveṣaḥ tathā ghoraḥ candrabhāskarayoḥ abhūt
vedayamānaḥ bhayam ghoram rājñām dehāvakartanam
10. tathā ghoraḥ pariveṣaḥ candrabhāskarayoḥ abhūt

10. Moreover, a dreadful halo appeared around both the moon and the sun, presaging immense fear and the dismemberment of kings.
देवतायतनस्थाश्च कौरवेन्द्रस्य देवताः ।
कम्पन्ते च हसन्ते च नृत्यन्ति च रुदन्ति च ॥११॥
11. devatāyatanasthāśca kauravendrasya devatāḥ ,
kampante ca hasante ca nṛtyanti ca rudanti ca.

11. The deities (devatā) residing in the temples of the Kaurava king are trembling, laughing, dancing, and crying.
अपसव्यं ग्रहाश्चक्रुरलक्ष्माणं निशाकरम् ।
अवाक्शिराश्च भगवानुदतिष्ठत चन्द्रमाः ॥१२॥
12. apasavyaṁ grahāścakruralakṣmāṇaṁ niśākaram ,
avākśirāśca bhagavānudatiṣṭhata candramāḥ.
12. apasavyam grahāḥ cakruḥ alakṣmāṇam niśākaram
avākśirāḥ ca bhagavān udatiṣṭhata candramāḥ
12. grahāḥ apasavyam cakruḥ alakṣmāṇam niśākaram
ca bhagavān candramāḥ avākśirāḥ udatiṣṭhata
12. The planets (graha) moved counter-clockwise (apasavyam), and the moon (niśākara) appeared without its usual marks. Moreover, the divine moon (candramāḥ) rose with its head downwards.
वपूंषि च नरेन्द्राणां विगतानीव लक्षये ।
धार्तराष्ट्रस्य सैन्येषु न च भ्राजन्ति दंशिताः ॥१३॥
13. vapūṁṣi ca narendrāṇāṁ vigatānīva lakṣaye ,
dhārtarāṣṭrasya sainyeṣu na ca bhrājanti daṁśitāḥ.
13. vapūṃṣi ca narendrāṇām vigatāni iva lakṣaye
dhārtarāṣṭrasya sainyeṣu na ca bhrājanti daṃśitāḥ
13. narendrāṇām vapūṃṣi ca vigatāni iva lakṣaye ca
dhārtarāṣṭrasya sainyeṣu daṃśitāḥ na bhrājanti
13. I observe that the bodies (vapūṃṣi) of the kings appear as if lifeless or vanished. Furthermore, in the armies of Dhṛtarāṣṭra, the armored warriors (daṃśitāḥ) do not shine brightly.
सेनयोरुभयोश्चैव समन्ताच्छ्रूयते महान् ।
पाञ्चजन्यस्य निर्घोषो गाण्डीवस्य च निस्वनः ॥१४॥
14. senayorubhayoścaiva samantācchrūyate mahān ,
pāñcajanyasya nirghoṣo gāṇḍīvasya ca nisvanaḥ.
14. senayoḥ ubhayoḥ ca eva samantāt śrūyate mahān
pāñcajanyasya nirghoṣaḥ gāṇḍīvasya ca nisvanaḥ

14. From both armies, all around, a great sound is heard: the roar of Pāñcajanya (Kṛṣṇa's conch) and the twang of Gāṇḍīva (Arjuna's bow).
ध्रुवमास्थाय बीभत्सुरुत्तमास्त्राणि संयुगे ।
अपास्यान्यान्रणे योधानभ्यस्यति पितामहम् ॥१५॥
15. dhruvamāsthāya bībhatsuruttamāstrāṇi saṁyuge ,
apāsyānyānraṇe yodhānabhyasyati pitāmaham.
15. dhruvam āsthāya bībhatsuḥ uttamāstrāṇi saṃyuge
apāsya anyān raṇe yodhān abhyasyati pitāmaham
15. saṃyuge bībhatsuḥ dhruvam āsthāya anyān raṇe

15. Bibhatsu (Arjuna), firmly positioned in battle, disregards other warriors on the battlefield and directs his supreme weapons towards the Pitamaha (Bhishma).
हृष्यन्ति रोमकूपानि सीदतीव च मे मनः ।
चिन्तयित्वा महाबाहो भीष्मार्जुनसमागमम् ॥१६॥
16. hṛṣyanti romakūpāni sīdatīva ca me manaḥ ,
cintayitvā mahābāho bhīṣmārjunasamāgamam.
16. hṛṣyanti romakūpāni sīdati iva ca me manaḥ
cintayitvā mahābāho bhīṣmārjunasamāgamam

16. O mighty-armed one, my hair stands on end and my mind seems to sink as I contemplate the encounter between Bhishma and Arjuna.
तं चैव निकृतिप्रज्ञं पाञ्चाल्यं पापचेतसम् ।
पुरस्कृत्य रणे पार्थो भीष्मस्यायोधनं गतः ॥१७॥
17. taṁ caiva nikṛtiprajñaṁ pāñcālyaṁ pāpacetasam ,
puraskṛtya raṇe pārtho bhīṣmasyāyodhanaṁ gataḥ.
17. tam ca eva nikṛtiprajñam pāñcālyam pāpacetasam
puraskṛtya raṇe pārthaḥ bhīṣmasya āyodhanam gataḥ
17. ca eva pārthaḥ nikṛtiprajñam pāpacetasam tam

17. And indeed, Partha (Arjuna), putting that deceitful-minded and wicked Pañcālya (Shikhandi) at the forefront, has gone to Bhishma's battle.
अब्रवीच्च पुरा भीष्मो नाहं हन्यां शिखण्डिनम् ।
स्त्री ह्येषा विहिता धात्रा दैवाच्च स पुनः पुमान् ॥१८॥
18. abravīcca purā bhīṣmo nāhaṁ hanyāṁ śikhaṇḍinam ,
strī hyeṣā vihitā dhātrā daivācca sa punaḥ pumān.
18. abravīt ca purā bhīṣmaḥ na aham hanyām śikhaṇḍinam
strī hi eṣā vihitā dhātrā daivāt ca saḥ punaḥ pumān
18. ca purā bhīṣmaḥ abravīt,
"aham śikhaṇḍinam na hanyām; hi eṣā strī dhātrā vihitā; ca daivāt saḥ punaḥ pumān (asti).
"
18. And formerly, Bhishma said, 'I would not kill Shikhandi, for this one was indeed created as a woman by the Creator (Dhātṛ), and by destiny, he has again become a man.'
अमङ्गल्यध्वजश्चैव याज्ञसेनिर्महारथः ।
न चामङ्गलकेतोः स प्रहरेदापगासुतः ॥१९॥
19. amaṅgalyadhvajaścaiva yājñasenirmahārathaḥ ,
na cāmaṅgalaketoḥ sa praharedāpagāsutaḥ.
19. amaṅgalyadhvajaḥ ca eva yājñaseniḥ mahārathaḥ
na ca amaṅgalaketoḥ saḥ praharet āpagāsutaḥ
19. yājñaseniḥ mahārathaḥ amaṅgalyadhvajaḥ ca eva

19. Even though Yājñasenī (Śikhaṇḍī) is a great chariot-warrior carrying an inauspicious banner, the son of the river (Bhīṣma) would certainly not strike against one with an inauspicious emblem.
एतद्विचिन्तयानस्य प्रज्ञा सीदति मे भृशम् ।
अद्यैव तु रणे पार्थः कुरुवृद्धमुपाद्रवत् ॥२०॥
20. etadvicintayānasya prajñā sīdati me bhṛśam ,
adyaiva tu raṇe pārthaḥ kuruvṛddhamupādravat.
20. etat vicintayānasya prajñā sīdati me bhṛśam
adya eva tu raṇe pārthaḥ kuruvṛddham upādravat
20. etat vicintayānasya me prajñā bhṛśam sīdati tu

20. As I ponder this, my intellect (prajñā) is greatly disturbed. Indeed, even today in battle, Pārtha (Arjuna) attacked the elder of the Kurus (Bhīṣma).
युधिष्ठिरस्य च क्रोधो भीष्मार्जुनसमागमः ।
मम चास्त्राभिसंरम्भः प्रजानामशुभं ध्रुवम् ॥२१॥
21. yudhiṣṭhirasya ca krodho bhīṣmārjunasamāgamaḥ ,
mama cāstrābhisaṁrambhaḥ prajānāmaśubhaṁ dhruvam.
21. yudhiṣṭhirasya ca krodhaḥ bhīṣmārjunasamāgamaḥ
mama ca astrābhisarambhaḥ prajānām aśubham dhruvam
21. yudhiṣṭhirasya krodhaḥ ca bhīṣmārjunasamāgamaḥ ca mama astrābhisarambhaḥ (ca),

21. Yudhiṣṭhira's anger, the encounter between Bhīṣma and Arjuna, and my own eagerness to wield weapons — these certainly bring misfortune to the people.
मनस्वी बलवाञ्शूरः कृतास्त्रो दृढविक्रमः ।
दूरपाती दृढेषुश्च निमित्तज्ञश्च पाण्डवः ॥२२॥
22. manasvī balavāñśūraḥ kṛtāstro dṛḍhavikramaḥ ,
dūrapātī dṛḍheṣuśca nimittajñaśca pāṇḍavaḥ.
22. manasvī balavān śūraḥ kṛtāstraḥ dṛḍhavikramaḥ
dūrapātī dṛḍheṣuḥ ca nimittajñaḥ ca pāṇḍavaḥ

22. The Pāṇḍava (Arjuna) is high-minded, powerful, heroic, accomplished in the use of weapons, firm in his valor, a long-range shooter, possessing strong arrows, and a knower of omens.
अजेयः समरे चैव देवैरपि सवासवैः ।
बलवान्बुद्धिमांश्चैव जितक्लेशो युधां वरः ॥२३॥
23. ajeyaḥ samare caiva devairapi savāsavaiḥ ,
balavānbuddhimāṁścaiva jitakleśo yudhāṁ varaḥ.
23. ajeyaḥ samare ca eva devaiḥ api savāsavaiḥ
balavān buddhimān ca eva jitakleśaḥ yudhām varaḥ
23. samare devaiḥ savāsavaiḥ api ajeyaḥ ca eva.
balavān buddhimān ca eva jitakleśaḥ yudhām varaḥ.
23. He is unconquerable in battle, even by the gods including Indra and the Vasus. He is powerful, intelligent, has overcome all afflictions, and is the best among warriors.
विजयी च रणे नित्यं भैरवास्त्रश्च पाण्डवः ।
तस्य मार्गं परिहरन्द्रुतं गच्छ यतव्रतम् ॥२४॥
24. vijayī ca raṇe nityaṁ bhairavāstraśca pāṇḍavaḥ ,
tasya mārgaṁ pariharandrutaṁ gaccha yatavratam.
24. vijayī ca raṇe nityam bhairavāstraḥ ca pāṇḍavaḥ
tasya mārgam pariharan drutam gaccha yatavratam
24. pāṇḍavaḥ ca raṇe nityam vijayī ca bhairavāstraḥ.
yatavratam tasya mārgam pariharan drutam gaccha.
24. And that Pāṇḍava (Arjuna) is always victorious in battle, possessing the Bhairava weapon. You who are firm in your vows, go quickly, avoiding his path.
पश्य चैतन्महाबाहो वैशसं समुपस्थितम् ।
हेमचित्राणि शूराणां महान्ति च शुभानि च ॥२५॥
25. paśya caitanmahābāho vaiśasaṁ samupasthitam ,
hemacitrāṇi śūrāṇāṁ mahānti ca śubhāni ca.
25. paśya ca etat mahābāho vaiśasam samupasthitam
hemacitrāṇi śūrāṇām mahānti ca śubhāni ca
25. mahābāho ca etat samupasthitam vaiśasam paśya.
śūrāṇām hemacitrāṇi ca mahānti ca śubhāni ca.
25. O mighty-armed one, behold this great imminent destruction (vaiśasam)! See the magnificent, beautiful, and gold-adorned (armors) of the heroes.
कवचान्यवदीर्यन्ते शरैः संनतपर्वभिः ।
छिद्यन्ते च ध्वजाग्राणि तोमराणि धनूंषि च ॥२६॥
26. kavacānyavadīryante śaraiḥ saṁnataparvabhiḥ ,
chidyante ca dhvajāgrāṇi tomarāṇi dhanūṁṣi ca.
26. kavacāni avadīryante śaraiḥ sannataparvabhiḥ
chidyante ca dhvajāgrāṇi tomarāṇi dhanūṃṣi ca
26. kavacāni sannataparvabhiḥ śaraiḥ avadīryante.
ca dhvajāgrāṇi tomarāṇi dhanūṃṣi ca chidyante.
26. Armors are being torn apart by arrows with bent shafts (sannataparvabhiḥ). And banner tops, javelins, and bows are being cut down.
प्रासाश्च विमलास्तीक्ष्णाः शक्त्यश्च कनकोज्ज्वलाः ।
वैजयन्त्यश्च नागानां संक्रुद्धेन किरीटिना ॥२७॥
27. prāsāśca vimalāstīkṣṇāḥ śaktyaśca kanakojjvalāḥ ,
vaijayantyaśca nāgānāṁ saṁkruddhena kirīṭinā.
27. prāsāḥ ca vimalāḥ tīkṣṇāḥ śaktayaḥ ca kanakojjvalāḥ
vaijayantyaḥ ca nāgānām saṃkruddhena kirīṭinā
27. saṃkruddhena kirīṭinā nāgānām vimalāḥ tīkṣṇāḥ
prāsāḥ ca kanakojjvalāḥ śaktayaḥ ca vaijayantyaḥ ca
27. And clean, sharp spears, and lances (śakti) shining like gold, and banners bearing serpent emblems are wielded by the greatly enraged crowned warrior.
नायं संरक्षितुं कालः प्राणान्पुत्रोपजीविभिः ।
याहि स्वर्गं पुरस्कृत्य यशसे विजयाय च ॥२८॥
28. nāyaṁ saṁrakṣituṁ kālaḥ prāṇānputropajīvibhiḥ ,
yāhi svargaṁ puraskṛtya yaśase vijayāya ca.
28. na ayam saṃrakṣitum kālaḥ prāṇān putropajīvibhiḥ
yāhi svargam puraskṛtya yaśase vijayāya ca
28. putropajīvibhiḥ prāṇān saṃrakṣitum ayam kālaḥ na.
yaśase vijayāya ca svargam puraskṛtya yāhi.
28. This is not the time for those who depend on their sons to preserve their lives. Go to heaven, aiming for fame and victory.
हयनागरथावर्तां महाघोरां सुदुस्तराम् ।
रथेन संग्रामनदीं तरत्येष कपिध्वजः ॥२९॥
29. hayanāgarathāvartāṁ mahāghorāṁ sudustarām ,
rathena saṁgrāmanadīṁ taratyeṣa kapidhvajaḥ.
29. haya-nāga-ratha-āvartām mahāghorām sudustarām
rathena saṃgrāma-nadīm tarati eṣaḥ kapidhvajaḥ
29. eṣaḥ kapidhvajaḥ rathena haya-nāga-ratha-āvartām
mahāghorām sudustarām saṃgrāma-nadīm tarati
29. This warrior, Kapidhvaja (he whose banner bears a monkey emblem), crosses by his chariot the river of battle, which has horses, elephants, and chariots as its whirlpools, is exceedingly dreadful, and very difficult to traverse.
ब्रह्मण्यता दमो दानं तपश्च चरितं महत् ।
इहैव दृश्यते राज्ञो भ्राता यस्य धनंजयः ॥३०॥
30. brahmaṇyatā damo dānaṁ tapaśca caritaṁ mahat ,
ihaiva dṛśyate rājño bhrātā yasya dhanaṁjayaḥ.

30. Devotion to Brahmanical virtues (brahmaṇyatā), self-control, charity (dāna), and austerity (tapas), along with great character, are seen right here in the king whose brother is Dhanañjaya (Arjuna).
भीमसेनश्च बलवान्माद्रीपुत्रौ च पाण्डवौ ।
वासुदेवश्च वार्ष्णेयो यस्य नाथो व्यवस्थितः ॥३१॥
31. bhīmasenaśca balavānmādrīputrau ca pāṇḍavau ,
vāsudevaśca vārṣṇeyo yasya nātho vyavasthitaḥ.

31. And the mighty Bhimasena, and the two sons of Madri, the Pandavas (Nakula and Sahadeva), and Vasudeva (Kṛṣṇa), the scion of the Vrishni clan—their protector is firmly established.
तस्यैष मन्युप्रभवो धार्तराष्ट्रस्य दुर्मतेः ।
तपोदग्धशरीरस्य कोपो दहति भारतान् ॥३२॥
32. tasyaiṣa manyuprabhavo dhārtarāṣṭrasya durmateḥ ,
tapodagdhaśarīrasya kopo dahati bhāratān.
32. tasya eṣa manyuprabhavaḥ dhārtarāṣṭrasya durmateḥ
tapodagdhaśarīrasya kopaḥ dahati bhāratān
32. eṣa manyuprabhavaḥ kopaḥ tasya dhārtarāṣṭrasya

32. This anger, born of wrath, belonging to that evil-minded son of Dhritarashtra (Duryodhana), whose body is hardened by austerity (tapas), is burning the Bharatas.
एष संदृश्यते पार्थो वासुदेवव्यपाश्रयः ।
दारयन्सर्वसैन्यानि धार्तराष्ट्राणि सर्वशः ॥३३॥
33. eṣa saṁdṛśyate pārtho vāsudevavyapāśrayaḥ ,
dārayansarvasainyāni dhārtarāṣṭrāṇi sarvaśaḥ.
33. eṣa saṃdṛśyate pārthaḥ vāsudevavyapāśrayaḥ
dārayan sarvasainyāni dhārtarāṣṭrāṇi sarvaśaḥ

33. This Arjuna (pārtha), whose support is Vasudeva (Kṛṣṇa), is seen tearing apart all the armies of the sons of Dhritarashtra (Kauravas) in every direction.
एतदालोक्यते सैन्यं क्षोभ्यमाणं किरीटिना ।
महोर्मिनद्धं सुमहत्तिमिनेव नदीमुखम् ॥३४॥
34. etadālokyate sainyaṁ kṣobhyamāṇaṁ kirīṭinā ,
mahorminaddhaṁ sumahattimineva nadīmukham.
34. etat ālokyate sainyam kṣobhyamāṇam kirīṭinā
mahorminaddham sumahat timinā iva nadīmukham
34. etat sainyam kirīṭinā kṣobhyamāṇam ālokyate

34. This army is observed being churned by the crowned one (Arjuna), just as a vast river estuary, surging with mighty waves, is agitated by a huge fish (whale).
हाहाकिलकिलाशब्दाः श्रूयन्ते च चमूमुखे ।
याहि पाञ्चालदायादमहं यास्ये युधिष्ठिरम् ॥३५॥
35. hāhākilakilāśabdāḥ śrūyante ca camūmukhe ,
yāhi pāñcāladāyādamahaṁ yāsye yudhiṣṭhiram.
35. hāhākilakilāśabdāḥ śrūyante ca camūmukhe
yāhi pāñcāladāyādam aham yāsye yudhiṣṭhiram

35. Sounds of "hāhā" and "kilakila" are heard at the front of the army. You go to the heir of Pañcāla, and I will go to Yudhiṣṭhira.
दुर्लभं ह्यन्तरं राज्ञो व्यूहस्यामिततेजसः ।
समुद्रकुक्षिप्रतिमं सर्वतोऽतिरथैः स्थितैः ॥३६॥
36. durlabhaṁ hyantaraṁ rājño vyūhasyāmitatejasaḥ ,
samudrakukṣipratimaṁ sarvato'tirathaiḥ sthitaiḥ.
36. durlabham hi antaram rājñaḥ vyūhasya amitatejasaḥ
samudrakukṣipratimam sarvataḥ atirathaiḥ sthitaiḥ
36. hi rājñaḥ amitatejasaḥ vyūhasya antaram durlabham

36. Indeed, the interior of the king's battle array (vyūha), which is of immense prowess, is inaccessible. It is like the depths of the ocean, with mighty charioteers (atiratḥa) positioned on all sides.
सात्यकिश्चाभिमन्युश्च धृष्टद्युम्नवृकोदरौ ।
परिरक्षन्ति राजानं यमौ च मनुजेश्वरम् ॥३७॥
37. sātyakiścābhimanyuśca dhṛṣṭadyumnavṛkodarau ,
parirakṣanti rājānaṁ yamau ca manujeśvaram.
37. sātyakiḥ ca abhimanyuḥ ca dhṛṣṭadyumnavṛkodarau
parirakṣanti rājānam yamau ca manujeśvaram

37. Satyaki, Abhimanyu, Dhrṣṭadyumna, Vṛkodara (Bhīma), and the two Yamas (Nakula and Sahadeva) protect the king, the lord of men.
उपेन्द्रसदृशः श्यामो महाशाल इवोद्गतः ।
एष गच्छत्यनीकानि द्वितीय इव फल्गुनः ॥३८॥
38. upendrasadṛśaḥ śyāmo mahāśāla ivodgataḥ ,
eṣa gacchatyanīkāni dvitīya iva phalgunaḥ.
38. upendrasadṛśaḥ śyāmaḥ mahāśālaḥ iva udgataḥ
eṣaḥ gacchati anīkāni dvitīyaḥ iva phalgunaḥ
38. eṣaḥ upendrasadṛśaḥ śyāmaḥ udgataḥ mahāśālaḥ
iva dvitīyaḥ phalgunaḥ iva anīkāni gacchati
38. This dark-complexioned one, resembling Upendra (Viṣṇu/Kṛṣṇa), tall like a great śāla tree, proceeds through the armies as if he were a second Arjuna (phalguna).
उत्तमास्त्राणि चादत्स्व गृहीत्वान्यन्महद्धनुः ।
पार्श्वतो याहि राजानं युध्यस्व च वृकोदरम् ॥३९॥
39. uttamāstrāṇi cādatsva gṛhītvānyanmahaddhanuḥ ,
pārśvato yāhi rājānaṁ yudhyasva ca vṛkodaram.
39. uttamāstrāṇi ca ādatstva gṛhītvā anyat mahat dhanuḥ
pārśvataḥ yāhi rājānam yudhyasva ca vṛkodaram
39. ca uttamāstrāṇi ādatstva anyat mahat dhanuḥ gṛhītvā

39. Take up the excellent weapons and, having taken another great bow, go to the king's side and fight Bhīma (Vṛkodara).
को हि नेच्छेत्प्रियं पुत्रं जीवन्तं शाश्वतीः समाः ।
क्षत्रधर्मं पुरस्कृत्य ततस्त्वा विनियुज्महे ॥४०॥
40. ko hi necchetpriyaṁ putraṁ jīvantaṁ śāśvatīḥ samāḥ ,
kṣatradharmaṁ puraskṛtya tatastvā viniyujmahe.
40. kaḥ hi na icchet priyam putram jīvantam śāśvatīḥ
samāḥ kṣatradharmam puraskṛtya tataḥ tvā viniyujmahe
40. hi kaḥ priyam putram śāśvatīḥ samāḥ jīvantam na
icchet kṣatradharmam puraskṛtya tataḥ tvā viniyujmahe
40. Who indeed would not wish for a dear son to live for eternal years? Holding the warrior's intrinsic nature (kṣatradharma) in high esteem, we therefore appoint you.
एष चापि रणे भीष्मो दहते वै महाचमूम् ।
युद्धे सुसदृशस्तात यमस्य वरुणस्य च ॥४१॥
41. eṣa cāpi raṇe bhīṣmo dahate vai mahācamūm ,
yuddhe susadṛśastāta yamasya varuṇasya ca.
41. eṣaḥ ca api raṇe bhīṣmaḥ dahate vai mahācamūm
yuddhe susadṛśaḥ tāta yamasya varuṇasya ca
41. ca api eṣaḥ bhīṣmaḥ raṇe vai mahācamūm dahate
tāta yuddhe yamasya varuṇasya ca susadṛśaḥ
41. And this Bhīṣma, even in battle, indeed burns up the great army. In combat, he is very much like Yama and Varuṇa, O father.
