तदुदीर्णगजाश्वौघं बलं तव जनाधिप ।
पाण्डुसेनामभिद्रुत्य योधयामास सर्वतः ॥१॥

1. Saṃjaya said: O ruler of men (janādhipa), your army (bala), with its surging mass of elephants and horses, rushed upon the Pāṇḍava forces and engaged them in battle from all sides.
पाञ्चालाः कुरवश्चैव योधयन्तः परस्परम् ।
यमराष्ट्राय महते परलोकाय दीक्षिताः ॥२॥

2. The Pāñcālas and also the Kurus, fighting each other, were indeed consecrated for the great realm of Yama and the next world (paraloka), implying they were ready to die.
शूराः शूरैः समागम्य शरतोमरशक्तिभिः ।
विव्यधुः समरे तूर्णं निन्युश्चैव यमक्षयम् ॥३॥
3. śūrāḥ śūraiḥ samāgamya śaratomaraśaktibhiḥ ,
vivyadhuḥ samare tūrṇaṁ ninyuścaiva yamakṣayam.

3. Brave warriors, confronting each other, swiftly pierced their opponents in battle with arrows, javelins, and lances, thus sending them to the abode of Yama.
रथिनां रथिभिः सार्धं रुधिरस्रावि दारुणम् ।
प्रावर्तत महद्युद्धं निघ्नतामितरेतरम् ॥४॥
4. rathināṁ rathibhiḥ sārdhaṁ rudhirasrāvi dāruṇam ,
prāvartata mahadyuddhaṁ nighnatāmitaretaram.

4. A great and dreadful battle, flowing with blood, began between charioteers, as they struck down one another.
वारणाश्च महाराज समासाद्य परस्परम् ।
विषाणैर्दारयामासुः संक्रुद्धाश्च मदोत्कटाः ॥५॥
5. vāraṇāśca mahārāja samāsādya parasparam ,
viṣāṇairdārayāmāsuḥ saṁkruddhāśca madotkaṭāḥ.

5. O great king, the elephants, both enraged and maddened, confronted each other and tore at one another with their tusks.
हयारोहान्हयारोहाः प्रासशक्तिपरश्वधैः ।
बिभिदुस्तुमुले युद्धे प्रार्थयन्तो महद्यशः ॥६॥
6. hayārohānhayārohāḥ prāsaśaktiparaśvadhaiḥ ,
bibhidustumule yuddhe prārthayanto mahadyaśaḥ.

6. Horse-riders, desiring great glory, pierced other horse-riders in the tumultuous battle with lances, spears, and battle-axes.
पत्तयश्च महाबाहो शतशः शस्त्रपाणयः ।
अन्योन्यमार्दयन्राजन्नित्ययत्ताः पराक्रमे ॥७॥
7. pattayaśca mahābāho śataśaḥ śastrapāṇayaḥ ,
anyonyamārdayanrājannityayattāḥ parākrame.

7. O mighty-armed one and O king, hundreds of foot soldiers, with weapons in hand, constantly engaged in valorous combat, tormented each other.
गोत्राणां नामधेयानां कुलानां चैव मारिष ।
श्रवणाद्धि विजानीमः पाञ्चालान्कुरुभिः सह ॥८॥
8. gotrāṇāṁ nāmadheyānāṁ kulānāṁ caiva māriṣa ,
śravaṇāddhi vijānīmaḥ pāñcālānkurubhiḥ saha.
8. gotrāṇām nāmadheyānām kulānām ca eva māriṣa
śravaṇāt hi vijānīmaḥ pāñcālān kurubhiḥ saha

8. O respectable one, it is indeed from hearing the names of the clans and families that we recognize the Pañcālas along with the Kurus.
अन्योन्यं समरे योधाः शरशक्तिपरश्वधैः ।
प्रेषयन्परलोकाय विचरन्तो ह्यभीतवत् ॥९॥
9. anyonyaṁ samare yodhāḥ śaraśaktiparaśvadhaiḥ ,
preṣayanparalokāya vicaranto hyabhītavat.

preṣayan paralokāya vicarantaḥ hi abhītavat
9. hi samare abhītavat vicarantaḥ yodhāḥ

9. Indeed, in battle, the warriors, moving about fearlessly, sent each other to the other world with arrows, spears, and battle-axes.
शरैर्दश दिशो राजंस्तेषां मुक्तैः सहस्रशः ।
न भ्राजन्त यथापूर्वं भास्करेऽस्तं गतेऽपि च ॥१०॥
10. śarairdaśa diśo rājaṁsteṣāṁ muktaiḥ sahasraśaḥ ,
na bhrājanta yathāpūrvaṁ bhāskare'staṁ gate'pi ca.
10. śaraiḥ daśa diśaḥ rājan teṣām muktaiḥ sahasraśaḥ na
bhrājanta yathāpūrvam bhāskare astam gate api ca
10. rājan teṣām sahasraśaḥ muktaiḥ śaraiḥ daśa diśaḥ
yathāpūrvam na bhrājanta bhāskare astam gate api ca
10. O king, due to the thousands of arrows released by them, the ten directions did not shine as they previously did, even when the sun had already set.
तथा प्रयुध्यमानेषु पाण्डवेयेषु निर्भयः ।
दुर्योधनो महाराज व्यवगाहत तद्बलम् ॥११॥
11. tathā prayudhyamāneṣu pāṇḍaveyeṣu nirbhayaḥ ,
duryodhano mahārāja vyavagāhata tadbalam.
11. tathā prayudhyamāneṣu pāṇḍaveyeṣu nirbhayaḥ
duryodhanaḥ mahārāja vyavagāhata tat balam
11. mahārāja tathā pāṇaveyeṣu prayudhyamāneṣu

11. O great king, as the Pāṇḍavas were thus engaged in battle, Duryodhana, fearless, plunged into that army.
सैन्धवस्य वधेनैव भृशं दुःखसमन्वितः ।
मर्तव्यमिति संचिन्त्य प्राविशत्तु द्विषद्बलम् ॥१२॥
12. saindhavasya vadhenaiva bhṛśaṁ duḥkhasamanvitaḥ ,
martavyamiti saṁcintya prāviśattu dviṣadbalam.
12. saindhavasya vadhena eva bhṛśam duḥkhasamanvitaḥ
martavyam iti saṃcintya prāviśat tu dviṣat balam
12. (saḥ) saiḿdhavasya vadhena eva bhr̥śaḿ duḥkhasamanvitaḥ

12. Indeed, deeply afflicted by sorrow due to Saindhava's death, and thinking 'I must die,' he entered the army of his enemies.
नादयन्रथघोषेण कम्पयन्निव मेदिनीम् ।
अभ्यवर्तत पुत्रस्ते पाण्डवानामनीकिनीम् ॥१३॥
13. nādayanrathaghoṣeṇa kampayanniva medinīm ,
abhyavartata putraste pāṇḍavānāmanīkinīm.
13. nādayan rathaghoṣeṇa kampayan iva medinīm
abhyavartata putraḥ te pāṇḍavānām anīkinīm
13. (mahārāja) te putraḥ rathaghoṣeṇa nādayan iva

13. Causing a roar with the sound of his chariot, and as if making the earth tremble, your son charged against the army of the Pāṇḍavas.
स संनिपातस्तुमुलस्तस्य तेषां च भारत ।
अभवत्सर्वसैन्यानामभावकरणो महान् ॥१४॥
14. sa saṁnipātastumulastasya teṣāṁ ca bhārata ,
abhavatsarvasainyānāmabhāvakaraṇo mahān.
14. saḥ saṃnipātaḥ tumulaḥ tasya teṣām ca bhārata
abhavat sarvasainyānām abhāvakaraṇaḥ mahān
14. bhārata saḥ tumulaḥ tasya teṣām ca saṃnipātaḥ
sarvasainyānām mahān abhāvakaraṇaḥ abhavat
14. O Bhārata, that fierce clash between him (Duryodhana) and them (the Pāṇḍavas) became a great destroyer of all armies.
मध्यंदिनगतं सूर्यं प्रतपन्तं गभस्तिभिः ।
तथा तव सुतं मध्ये प्रतपन्तं शरोर्मिभिः ॥१५॥
15. madhyaṁdinagataṁ sūryaṁ pratapantaṁ gabhastibhiḥ ,
tathā tava sutaṁ madhye pratapantaṁ śarormibhiḥ.
15. madhyaṃdinagatam sūryam pratapantam gabhastibhiḥ
tathā tava sutam madhye pratapantam śarormibhiḥ
15. yathā madhyaṃdinagatam sūryam gabhastibhiḥ pratapantam,
tathā tava sutam madhye śarormibhiḥ pratapantam
15. Just as the midday sun scorches with its rays, similarly your son was tormenting (the enemy) in the midst of battle with waves of arrows.
न शेकुर्भारतं युद्धे पाण्डवाः समवेक्षितुम् ।
पलायने कृतोत्साहा निरुत्साहा द्विषज्जये ॥१६॥
16. na śekurbhārataṁ yuddhe pāṇḍavāḥ samavekṣitum ,
palāyane kṛtotsāhā nirutsāhā dviṣajjaye.
16. na śekuḥ bhāratam yuddhe pāṇḍavāḥ samavekṣitum
palāyane kṛtotsāhāḥ nirutsāhāḥ dviṣajjaye
16. pāṇḍavāḥ yuddhe bhāratam samavekṣitum na śekuḥ,
[te] palāyane kṛtotsāhāḥ,
dviṣajjaye nirutsāhāḥ
16. The Pāṇḍavas were unable to confront (Bhārata) in battle. They were enthusiastic for retreat, but lacked enthusiasm for victory over their enemies.
पर्यधावन्त पाञ्चाला वध्यमाना महात्मना ।
रुक्मपुङ्खैः प्रसन्नाग्रैस्तव पुत्रेण धन्विना ।
अर्द्यमानाः शरैस्तूर्णं न्यपतन्पाण्डुसैनिकाः ॥१७॥
17. paryadhāvanta pāñcālā vadhyamānā mahātmanā ,
rukmapuṅkhaiḥ prasannāgraistava putreṇa dhanvinā ,
ardyamānāḥ śaraistūrṇaṁ nyapatanpāṇḍusainikāḥ.
17. paryadhāvanta pāñcālāḥ vadhyamānāḥ
mahātmanā rukmapuṅkhaiḥ prasannāgraiḥ
tava putreṇa dhanvinā ardyamānāḥ
śaraiḥ tūrṇam nyapatan pāṇḍusainikāḥ
17. pāñcālāḥ mahātmanā tava putreṇa dhanvinā vadhyamānāḥ paryadhāvanta; pāṇḍusainikāḥ rukmapuṅkhaiḥ prasannāgraiḥ śaraiḥ tūrṇam ardyamānāḥ nyapatan.
17. The Pāñcālas ran about, being slain by your great-souled son, the archer. The Pāṇḍava soldiers, quickly tormented by arrows with golden shafts and keen tips, fell down.
न तादृशं रणे कर्म कृतवन्तस्तु तावकाः ।
यादृशं कृतवान्राजा पुत्रस्तव विशां पते ॥१८॥
18. na tādṛśaṁ raṇe karma kṛtavantastu tāvakāḥ ,
yādṛśaṁ kṛtavānrājā putrastava viśāṁ pate.
18. na tādṛśam raṇe karma kṛtavantaḥ tu tāvakāḥ
yādṛśam kṛtavān rājā putraḥ tava viśām pate
18. he viśām pate,
tava tāvakāḥ raṇe tādṛśam karma na kṛtavantaḥ,
yādṛśam tava putraḥ rājā kṛtavān.
18. O lord of the people, your warriors did not perform in battle such a deed as your son, the king, performed.
पुत्रेण तव सा सेना पाण्डवी मथिता रणे ।
नलिनी द्विरदेनेव समन्तात्फुल्लपङ्कजा ॥१९॥
19. putreṇa tava sā senā pāṇḍavī mathitā raṇe ,
nalinī dviradeneva samantātphullapaṅkajā.

19. Your son crushed that Pandava army in battle, just as an elephant utterly destroys a lotus pond filled with blooming lotuses.
क्षीणतोयानिलार्काभ्यां हतत्विडिव पद्मिनी ।
बभूव पाण्डवी सेना तव पुत्रस्य तेजसा ॥२०॥
20. kṣīṇatoyānilārkābhyāṁ hatatviḍiva padminī ,
babhūva pāṇḍavī senā tava putrasya tejasā.

20. The Pandava army became like a lotus pond whose brilliance is destroyed by the sun and wind, which diminish its water, all due to the prowess of your son.
पाण्डुसेनां हतां दृष्ट्वा तव पुत्रेण भारत ।
भीमसेनपुरोगास्तु पाञ्चालाः समुपाद्रवन् ॥२१॥
21. pāṇḍusenāṁ hatāṁ dṛṣṭvā tava putreṇa bhārata ,
bhīmasenapurogāstu pāñcālāḥ samupādravan.
21. pāṇḍusenām hatām dṛṣṭvā tava putreṇa bhārata
bhīmasenapurogāḥ tu pāñcālāḥ samupādravan
21. bhārata tava putreṇa hatām pāṇḍusenām dṛṣṭvā

21. O Bhārata, upon seeing the Pandava army destroyed by your son, the Pañcālas, with Bhīmasena at their forefront, indeed advanced.
स भीमसेनं दशभिर्माद्रीपुत्रौ त्रिभिस्त्रिभिः ।
विराटद्रुपदौ षड्भिः शतेन च शिखण्डिनम् ॥२२॥
22. sa bhīmasenaṁ daśabhirmādrīputrau tribhistribhiḥ ,
virāṭadrupadau ṣaḍbhiḥ śatena ca śikhaṇḍinam.
22. saḥ bhīmasenam daśabhiḥ mādrīputrau tribhiḥ tribhiḥ
virāṭadrupadau ṣaḍbhiḥ śatena ca śikhaṇḍinam

virāṭadrupadau ṣaḍbhiḥ ca śikhaṇḍinam śatena
22. He (your son) struck Bhīmasena with ten arrows, the two sons of Mādrī with three arrows each, Virāṭa and Drupada with six, and Śikhaṇḍin with a hundred.
धृष्टद्युम्नं च सप्तत्या धर्मपुत्रं च सप्तभिः ।
केकयांश्चैव चेदींश्च बहुभिर्निशितैः शरैः ॥२३॥
23. dhṛṣṭadyumnaṁ ca saptatyā dharmaputraṁ ca saptabhiḥ ,
kekayāṁścaiva cedīṁśca bahubhirniśitaiḥ śaraiḥ.
23. dhṛṣṭadyumnam ca saptatyā dharmaputram ca saptabhiḥ
kekayān ca eva cedīn ca bahubhiḥ niśitaiḥ śaraiḥ

23. He struck Dhrishtadyumna with seventy arrows, and the son of dharma (dharma-putra) with seven, and also the Kekayas and Chedis with many sharp arrows.
सात्वतं पञ्चभिर्विद्ध्वा द्रौपदेयांस्त्रिभिस्त्रिभिः ।
घटोत्कचं च समरे विद्ध्वा सिंह इवानदत् ॥२४॥
24. sātvataṁ pañcabhirviddhvā draupadeyāṁstribhistribhiḥ ,
ghaṭotkacaṁ ca samare viddhvā siṁha ivānadat.
24. sātvatam pañcabhiḥ viddhvā draupadeyān tribhiḥ tribhiḥ
ghaṭotkacam ca samare viddhvā siṃhaḥ iva ānadat
24. sātvatam pañcabhiḥ viddhvā draupadeyān tribhiḥ tribhiḥ
ghaṭotkacam ca samare viddhvā siṃhaḥ iva ānadat
24. Having struck Satvata with five arrows, and the sons of Draupadi (draupadeya) with three each, and having pierced Ghatotkacha in battle, he roared like a lion.
शतशश्चापरान्योधान्सद्विपाश्वरथान्रणे ।
शरैरवचकर्तोग्रैः क्रुद्धोऽन्तक इव प्रजाः ॥२५॥
25. śataśaścāparānyodhānsadvipāśvarathānraṇe ,
śarairavacakartograiḥ kruddho'ntaka iva prajāḥ.
25. śataśaḥ ca aparān yodhān sadvipāśvarathān raṇe
śaraiḥ avacakarta ugraiḥ kruddhaḥ antakaḥ iva prajāḥ
25. kruddhaḥ antakaḥ iva prajāḥ ugraiḥ śaraiḥ raṇe
śataśaḥ ca aparān yodhān sadvipāśvarathān avacakarta
25. And he cut down hundreds of other warriors, along with their elephants, horses, and chariots, in battle with fierce arrows, like the enraged Destroyer (Antaka) destroys living beings (prajā).
तस्य तान्निघ्नतः शत्रून्रुक्मपृष्ठं महद्धनुः ।
भल्लाभ्यां पाण्डवो ज्येष्ठस्त्रिधा चिच्छेद मारिष ॥२६॥
26. tasya tānnighnataḥ śatrūnrukmapṛṣṭhaṁ mahaddhanuḥ ,
bhallābhyāṁ pāṇḍavo jyeṣṭhastridhā ciccheda māriṣa.
26. tasya tān nighnataḥ śatrūn rukmapṛṣṭham mahat dhanuḥ
bhallābhyām pāṇḍavaḥ jyeṣṭhaḥ tridhā ciccheda māriṣa
26. māriṣa tasya tān śatrūn nighnataḥ jyeṣṭhaḥ pāṇḍavaḥ
rukmapṛṣṭham mahat dhanuḥ bhallābhyām tridhā ciccheda
26. O venerable one (māriṣa), as he was striking down those enemies, the eldest Pandava (pāṇḍava) broke his great, gold-backed bow into three pieces with two broad-headed arrows.
विव्याध चैनं दशभिः सम्यगस्तैः शितैः शरैः ।
मर्माणि भित्त्वा ते सर्वे संभग्नाः क्षितिमाविशन् ॥२७॥
27. vivyādha cainaṁ daśabhiḥ samyagastaiḥ śitaiḥ śaraiḥ ,
marmāṇi bhittvā te sarve saṁbhagnāḥ kṣitimāviśan.
27. vīvyādha ca enam daśabhiḥ samyak astaiḥ śitaiḥ śaraiḥ
marmāṇi bhittvā te sarve saṃbhagnāḥ kṣitim āviśan
27. enam ca daśabhiḥ samyak astaiḥ śitaiḥ śaraiḥ vīvyādha
te sarve marmāṇi bhittvā saṃbhagnāḥ kṣitim āviśan
27. And he pierced him with ten well-aimed, sharp arrows. All those arrows, having penetrated his vital spots, then broke and entered the earth.
ततः प्रमुदिता योधाः परिवव्रुर्युधिष्ठिरम् ।
वृत्रहत्यै यथा देवाः परिवव्रुः पुरंदरम् ॥२८॥
28. tataḥ pramuditā yodhāḥ parivavruryudhiṣṭhiram ,
vṛtrahatyai yathā devāḥ parivavruḥ puraṁdaram.
28. tataḥ pramuditāḥ yodhāḥ parivavruḥ yudhiṣṭhiram
vṛtrahatyai yathā devāḥ parivavruḥ purandaram
28. tataḥ pramuditāḥ yodhāḥ yudhiṣṭhiram parivavruḥ
yathā devāḥ vṛtrahatyai purandaram parivavruḥ
28. Then, the greatly delighted warriors surrounded Yudhiṣṭhira, just as the gods surrounded Purandara (Indra) after the slaying of Vṛtra.
ततो युधिष्ठिरो राजा तव पुत्रस्य मारिष ।
शरं परमदुर्वारं प्रेषयामास संयुगे ।
स तेन भृशसंविद्धो निषसाद रथोत्तमे ॥२९॥
29. tato yudhiṣṭhiro rājā tava putrasya māriṣa ,
śaraṁ paramadurvāraṁ preṣayāmāsa saṁyuge ,
sa tena bhṛśasaṁviddho niṣasāda rathottame.
29. tataḥ yudhiṣṭhiraḥ rājā tava
putrasya māriṣa śaram paramadurvāram
preṣayāmāsa saṃyuge saḥ tena
bhṛśasaṃviddhaḥ niṣasāda rathottame

bhṛśasaṃviddhaḥ rathottame niṣasāda
29. Then, O respected one, King Yudhiṣṭhira dispatched an exceedingly irresistible arrow towards your son in battle. Severely pierced by that [arrow], he sank down into his excellent chariot.
ततः पाञ्चालसैन्यानां भृशमासीद्रवो महान् ।
हतो राजेति राजेन्द्र मुदितानां समन्ततः ॥३०॥
30. tataḥ pāñcālasainyānāṁ bhṛśamāsīdravo mahān ,
hato rājeti rājendra muditānāṁ samantataḥ.

30. Then, O king of kings, a great roar arose from the Pañchāla armies, who were greatly delighted from all sides, exclaiming, 'The king is slain!'
बाणशब्दरवश्चोग्रः शुश्रुवे तत्र मारिष ।
अथ द्रोणो द्रुतं तत्र प्रत्यदृश्यत संयुगे ॥३१॥
31. bāṇaśabdaravaścograḥ śuśruve tatra māriṣa ,
atha droṇo drutaṁ tatra pratyadṛśyata saṁyuge.

atha droṇaḥ drutam tatra prati adṛśyata saṃyuge
31. māriṣa tatra ugraḥ bāṇaśabdaravaḥ ca śuśruve

31. O respected sir, a fierce roar of arrow sounds was heard there. Then, Drona quickly became visible in that battle.
हृष्टो दुर्योधनश्चापि दृढमादाय कार्मुकम् ।
तिष्ठ तिष्ठेति राजानं ब्रुवन्पाण्डवमभ्ययात् ॥३२॥
32. hṛṣṭo duryodhanaścāpi dṛḍhamādāya kārmukam ,
tiṣṭha tiṣṭheti rājānaṁ bruvanpāṇḍavamabhyayāt.
32. hṛṣṭaḥ duryodhanaḥ ca api dṛḍham ādāya kārmukam
tiṣṭha tiṣṭha iti rājānam bruvan pāṇḍavam abhyayāt
32. hṛṣṭaḥ duryodhanaḥ ca api dṛḍham kārmukam ādāya
tiṣṭha tiṣṭha iti rājānam pāṇḍavam bruvan abhyayāt
32. Duryodhana, delighted, firmly grasped his bow. Saying "Stop! Stop!" to the Pandava king (Yudhishthira), he advanced towards him.
प्रत्युद्ययुस्तं त्वरिताः पाञ्चाला राजगृद्धिनः ।
तान्द्रोणः प्रतिजग्राह परीप्सन्कुरुसत्तमम् ।
चण्डवातोद्धतान्मेघान्निघ्नन्रश्मिमुचो यथा ॥३३॥
33. pratyudyayustaṁ tvaritāḥ pāñcālā rājagṛddhinaḥ ,
tāndroṇaḥ pratijagrāha parīpsankurusattamam ,
caṇḍavātoddhatānmeghānnighnanraśmimuco yathā.
33. prati ud yayuḥ tam tvaritāḥ pāñcālāḥ
rāja gṛddhinaḥ tān droṇaḥ pratijagrāha
parīpsan kuru sattamam caṇḍa vāta
uddhatān meghān nighnan raśmi mucaḥ yathā
33. tvaritāḥ rāja gṛddhinaḥ pāñcālāḥ tam
prati ud yayuḥ droṇaḥ kuru sattamam
parīpsan tān pratijagrāha yathā raśmi
mucaḥ caṇḍa vāta uddhatān meghān nighnan
33. The swift Panchalas, eager for the kingdom, rushed forward to meet him. Drona, desiring to protect the foremost of the Kurus (Duryodhana), intercepted them, just as the sun(s) dispels clouds agitated by fierce winds.
ततो राजन्महानासीत्संग्रामो भूरिवर्धनः ।
तावकानां परेषां च समेतानां युयुत्सया ॥३४॥
34. tato rājanmahānāsītsaṁgrāmo bhūrivardhanaḥ ,
tāvakānāṁ pareṣāṁ ca sametānāṁ yuyutsayā.
34. tataḥ rājan mahān āsīt saṃgrāmaḥ bhūri vardhanaḥ
tāvakānām pareṣām ca sametānām yuyutsayā
34. rājan tataḥ mahān bhūri vardhanaḥ saṃgrāmaḥ
āsīt tāvakānām pareṣām ca sametānām yuyutsayā
34. Then, O King, a great and greatly intensifying battle took place between your forces (Kauravas) and the enemies (Pandavas), who had gathered with a strong desire to fight.
