शौनक उवाच ।
पुराणमखिलं तात पिता तेऽधीतवान्पुरा ।
कच्चित्त्वमपि तत्सर्वमधीषे लोमहर्षणे ॥१॥
1. śaunaka uvāca ,
purāṇamakhilaṁ tāta pitā te'dhītavānpurā ,
kaccittvamapi tatsarvamadhīṣe lomaharṣaṇe.
1. śaunakaḥ uvāca purāṇam akhilam tāta pitā te adhītavān
purā kaccit tvam api tat sarvam adhīṣe lomaharṣaṇe
1. Śaunaka said: "O dear son, your father formerly studied the entire Purāṇa. Do you also study all of that, O Lomaharṣaṇa?"
पुराणे हि कथा दिव्या आदिवंशाश्च धीमताम् ।
कथ्यन्ते ताः पुरास्माभिः श्रुताः पूर्वं पितुस्तव ॥२॥
2. purāṇe hi kathā divyā ādivaṁśāśca dhīmatām ,
kathyante tāḥ purāsmābhiḥ śrutāḥ pūrvaṁ pitustava.
2. purāṇe hi kathāḥ divyāḥ ādivanśāḥ ca dhīmatām
kathyante tāḥ purā asmābhiḥ śrutāḥ pūrvam pituḥ tava
2. Indeed, the Purāṇa recounts divine narratives and the ancient lineages of the wise. We previously heard those (stories and lineages) from your father.
तत्र वंशमहं पूर्वं श्रोतुमिच्छामि भार्गवम् ।
कथयस्व कथामेतां कल्याः स्म श्रवणे तव ॥३॥
3. tatra vaṁśamahaṁ pūrvaṁ śrotumicchāmi bhārgavam ,
kathayasva kathāmetāṁ kalyāḥ sma śravaṇe tava.
3. tatra vanśam aham pūrvam śrotum icchāmi bhārgavam
kathayasva kathām etām kalyāḥ sma śravaṇe tava
3. Among those, I first wish to hear the lineage of Bhṛgu. Please narrate this story; we are eager to listen to you.
सूत उवाच ।
यदधीतं पुरा सम्यग्द्विजश्रेष्ठ महात्मभिः ।
वैशंपायनविप्राद्यैस्तैश्चापि कथितं पुरा ॥४॥
4. sūta uvāca ,
yadadhītaṁ purā samyagdvijaśreṣṭha mahātmabhiḥ ,
vaiśaṁpāyanaviprādyaistaiścāpi kathitaṁ purā.
4. sūtaḥ uvāca yat adhītam purā samyak dvijaśreṣṭha mahātmabhiḥ
vaiśaṃpāyana-vipra-ādyaiḥ taiḥ ca api kathitam purā
4. Sūta said: "That which was properly studied in ancient times by great souls, O best among the twice-born, and which was also narrated previously by sages headed by Vaiśampāyana..."
यदधीतं च पित्रा मे सम्यक्चैव ततो मया ।
तत्तावच्छृणु यो देवैः सेन्द्रैः साग्निमरुद्गणैः ।
पूजितः प्रवरो वंशो भृगूणां भृगुनन्दन ॥५॥
5. yadadhītaṁ ca pitrā me samyakcaiva tato mayā ,
tattāvacchṛṇu yo devaiḥ sendraiḥ sāgnimarudgaṇaiḥ ,
pūjitaḥ pravaro vaṁśo bhṛgūṇāṁ bhṛgunandana.
5. yat adhītam ca pitrā me samyak ca eva
tataḥ mayā tat tāvat śṛṇu yaḥ devaiḥ
sa-indraiḥ sa-agni-marut-gaṇaiḥ pūjitaḥ
pravaraḥ vaṃśaḥ bhṛgūṇām bhṛgunandana
5. Listen now, O descendant of Bhṛgu, to that [story] which was properly studied by my father, and then also by me – [the story of] the excellent lineage of the Bhṛgus, which was revered by the gods, along with Indra and the hosts of Agni and Maruts.
इमं वंशमहं ब्रह्मन्भार्गवं ते महामुने ।
निगदामि कथायुक्तं पुराणाश्रयसंयुतम् ॥६॥
6. imaṁ vaṁśamahaṁ brahmanbhārgavaṁ te mahāmune ,
nigadāmi kathāyuktaṁ purāṇāśrayasaṁyutam.
6. imam vaṃśam aham brahman bhārgavam te mahāmune
nigadāmi kathā-yuktam purāṇa-āśraya-saṃyutam
6. O Brahmin, O great sage, I shall now relate to you this Bhārgava lineage, filled with stories and connected with Purāṇic traditions.
भृगोः सुदयितः पुत्रश्च्यवनो नाम भार्गवः ।
च्यवनस्यापि दायादः प्रमतिर्नाम धार्मिकः ।
प्रमतेरप्यभूत्पुत्रो घृताच्यां रुरुरित्युत ॥७॥
7. bhṛgoḥ sudayitaḥ putraścyavano nāma bhārgavaḥ ,
cyavanasyāpi dāyādaḥ pramatirnāma dhārmikaḥ ,
pramaterapyabhūtputro ghṛtācyāṁ rururityuta.
7. bhṛgoḥ su-dayitaḥ putraḥ cyavanaḥ nāma
bhārgavaḥ cyavanasya api dāyādaḥ
pramatiḥ nāma dhārmikaḥ pramater api
abhūt putraḥ ghṛtācyām ruruḥ iti uta
7. Bhṛgu's most beloved son was Cyavana, a descendant of Bhṛgu. Cyavana's heir was the righteous Pramati. And to Pramati, through Ghṛtācī, was born a son named Ruru.
रुरोरपि सुतो जज्ञे शुनको वेदपारगः ।
प्रमद्वरायां धर्मात्मा तव पूर्वपितामहात् ॥८॥
8. rurorapi suto jajñe śunako vedapāragaḥ ,
pramadvarāyāṁ dharmātmā tava pūrvapitāmahāt.
8. ruroḥ api sutaḥ jajñe śunakaḥ veda-pāragaḥ
pramadvarāyām dharma-ātmā tava pūrva-pitāmahāt
8. From Ruru, a son named Śunaka was born through Pramadvarā. He was a master of the Vedas, a righteous soul, and your great-grandfather.
तपस्वी च यशस्वी च श्रुतवान्ब्रह्मवित्तमः ।
धर्मिष्ठः सत्यवादी च नियतो नियतेन्द्रियः ॥९॥
9. tapasvī ca yaśasvī ca śrutavānbrahmavittamaḥ ,
dharmiṣṭhaḥ satyavādī ca niyato niyatendriyaḥ.
9. tapasvī ca yaśasvī ca śrutavān brahmavittamaḥ
dharmiṣṭhaḥ satyavādī ca niyataḥ niyatendriyaḥ
9. He was an ascetic, renowned, and learned, the foremost among the knowers of Brahman. He was most righteous, truthful, self-controlled, and possessed of restrained senses.
शौनक उवाच ।
सूतपुत्र यथा तस्य भार्गवस्य महात्मनः ।
च्यवनत्वं परिख्यातं तन्ममाचक्ष्व पृच्छतः ॥१०॥
10. śaunaka uvāca ,
sūtaputra yathā tasya bhārgavasya mahātmanaḥ ,
cyavanatvaṁ parikhyātaṁ tanmamācakṣva pṛcchataḥ.
10. śaunakaḥ uvāca sūtaputra yathā tasya bhārgavasya mahātmanaḥ
cyavanatvaṃ parikhyātaṃ tat mama ācakṣva pṛcchataḥ
10. Śaunaka said, "O son of Sūta, please tell me, who am asking, how that great-souled descendant of Bhṛgu came to be known as Chyavana, and how that name became so renowned."
सूत उवाच ।
भृगोः सुदयिता भार्या पुलोमेत्यभिविश्रुता ।
तस्यां गर्भः समभवद्भृगोर्वीर्यसमुद्भवः ॥११॥
11. sūta uvāca ,
bhṛgoḥ sudayitā bhāryā pulometyabhiviśrutā ,
tasyāṁ garbhaḥ samabhavadbhṛgorvīryasamudbhavaḥ.
11. sūtaḥ uvāca bhṛgoḥ sudayitā bhāryā pulomā iti abhiviśrutā
tasyāṃ garbhaḥ samabhavat bhṛgoḥ vīryasamudbhavaḥ
11. Sūta said, "Bhṛgu had a very beloved wife, who was well-known by the name Puloma. In her, a child was conceived, born from Bhṛgu's potency."
तस्मिन्गर्भे संभृतेऽथ पुलोमायां भृगूद्वह ।
समये समशीलिन्यां धर्मपत्न्यां यशस्विनः ॥१२॥
12. tasmingarbhe saṁbhṛte'tha pulomāyāṁ bhṛgūdvaha ,
samaye samaśīlinyāṁ dharmapatnyāṁ yaśasvinaḥ.
12. tasmin garbhe saṃbhṛte atha pulomāyāṃ bhṛgūdvaha
samaye samaśīlinyāṃ dharmapatnyāṃ yaśasvinaḥ
12. O descendant of Bhṛgu, then, as that fetus was being nourished within Puloma, the virtuous and lawful wife of the renowned sage, at the appropriate time...
अभिषेकाय निष्क्रान्ते भृगौ धर्मभृतां वरे ।
आश्रमं तस्य रक्षोऽथ पुलोमाभ्याजगाम ह ॥१३॥
13. abhiṣekāya niṣkrānte bhṛgau dharmabhṛtāṁ vare ,
āśramaṁ tasya rakṣo'tha pulomābhyājagāma ha.
13. abhiṣekāya niṣkrānte bhṛgau dharmabhṛtāṃ vare
āśramaṃ tasya rakṣaḥ atha pulomā abhyājagāma ha
13. When Bhṛgu, the foremost among the upholders of righteousness, had departed for his ritual ablutions, a demon named Puloma then indeed approached his hermitage.
तं प्रविश्याश्रमं दृष्ट्वा भृगोर्भार्यामनिन्दिताम् ।
हृच्छयेन समाविष्टो विचेताः समपद्यत ॥१४॥
14. taṁ praviśyāśramaṁ dṛṣṭvā bhṛgorbhāryāmaninditām ,
hṛcchayena samāviṣṭo vicetāḥ samapadyata.
14. tam praviśya āśramam dṛṣṭvā bhṛgoḥ bhāryām
aninditām hṛcchayena samāviṣṭaḥ vicetāḥ samapadyata
14. Having entered that hermitage and seen Bhṛgu's blameless wife, he became bewildered, overcome by the god of love (Kāma).
अभ्यागतं तु तद्रक्षः पुलोमा चारुदर्शना ।
न्यमन्त्रयत वन्येन फलमूलादिना तदा ॥१५॥
15. abhyāgataṁ tu tadrakṣaḥ pulomā cārudarśanā ,
nyamantrayata vanyena phalamūlādinā tadā.
15. abhyāgatam tu tat rakṣaḥ pulomā cārudarśanā
nyamantrayata vanyena phalamūlādinā tadā
15. But that Rākṣasa, Pulomā, who was beautiful to behold, then invited the guest with wild forest produce like fruits and roots.
तां तु रक्षस्ततो ब्रह्मन्हृच्छयेनाभिपीडितम् ।
दृष्ट्वा हृष्टमभूत्तत्र जिहीर्षुस्तामनिन्दिताम् ॥१६॥
16. tāṁ tu rakṣastato brahmanhṛcchayenābhipīḍitam ,
dṛṣṭvā hṛṣṭamabhūttatra jihīrṣustāmaninditām.
16. tām tu rakṣaḥ tataḥ brahman hṛcchayena abhipīḍitam
dṛṣṭvā hṛṣṭam abhūt tatra jihīrṣuḥ tām aninditām
16. O Brahman, that Rākṣasa, seeing himself afflicted by the god of love, became joyful there, desiring to abduct that blameless woman.
अथाग्निशरणेऽपश्यज्ज्वलितं जातवेदसम् ।
तमपृच्छत्ततो रक्षः पावकं ज्वलितं तदा ॥१७॥
17. athāgniśaraṇe'paśyajjvalitaṁ jātavedasam ,
tamapṛcchattato rakṣaḥ pāvakaṁ jvalitaṁ tadā.
17. atha agniśaraṇe apaśyat jvalitam jātavedasam
tam apṛcchat tataḥ rakṣaḥ pāvakam jvalitam tadā
17. Then, in the fire-sanctuary, he saw the blazing Jātavedas (fire). Thereupon, that Rākṣasa questioned that blazing Pāvaka (fire).
शंस मे कस्य भार्येयमग्ने पृष्ट ऋतेन वै ।
सत्यस्त्वमसि सत्यं मे वद पावक पृच्छते ॥१८॥
18. śaṁsa me kasya bhāryeyamagne pṛṣṭa ṛtena vai ,
satyastvamasi satyaṁ me vada pāvaka pṛcchate.
18. śaṃsa me kasya bhāryā iyam agne pṛṣṭaḥ ṛtena vai
satyaḥ tvam asi satyam me vada pāvaka pṛcchate
18. O Agni, tell me, whose wife is this? When questioned by truth, you are indeed truthful. O Pāvaka, tell me the truth when I ask.
मया हीयं पूर्ववृता भार्यार्थे वरवर्णिनी ।
पश्चात्त्विमां पिता प्रादाद्भृगवेऽनृतकारिणे ॥१९॥
19. mayā hīyaṁ pūrvavṛtā bhāryārthe varavarṇinī ,
paścāttvimāṁ pitā prādādbhṛgave'nṛtakāriṇe.
19. mayā hi iyam pūrvavṛtā bhāryārthe varavarṇinī
paścāt tu imām pitā prādāt bhṛgave anṛtakāriṇe
19. Indeed, this lady of excellent beauty was previously chosen by me as a wife. But later, my father gave her to Bhṛgu, who acts deceitfully.
सेयं यदि वरारोहा भृगोर्भार्या रहोगता ।
तथा सत्यं समाख्याहि जिहीर्षाम्याश्रमादिमाम् ॥२०॥
20. seyaṁ yadi varārohā bhṛgorbhāryā rahogatā ,
tathā satyaṁ samākhyāhi jihīrṣāmyāśramādimām.
20. sā iyam yadi varārohā bhṛgoḥ bhāryā rahogatā
tathā satyam samākhyāhi jihīrṣāmi āśramāt imām
20. If this lady of excellent hips is indeed Bhṛgu's wife who has gone into privacy, then tell me the truth, for I intend to take her away from this hermitage.
मन्युर्हि हृदयं मेऽद्य प्रदहन्निव तिष्ठति ।
मत्पूर्वभार्यां यदिमां भृगुः प्राप सुमध्यमाम् ॥२१॥
21. manyurhi hṛdayaṁ me'dya pradahanniva tiṣṭhati ,
matpūrvabhāryāṁ yadimāṁ bhṛguḥ prāpa sumadhyamām.
21. manyuḥ hi hṛdayam me adya pradahan iva tiṣṭhati
matpūrvabhāryām yadi imām bhṛguḥ prāpa sumadhyamām
21. Indeed, wrath now stands in my heart as if consuming it, if Bhṛgu has obtained this slender-waisted lady, who was formerly my wife.
तद्रक्ष एवमामन्त्र्य ज्वलितं जातवेदसम् ।
शङ्कमानो भृगोर्भार्यां पुनः पुनरपृच्छत ॥२२॥
22. tadrakṣa evamāmantrya jvalitaṁ jātavedasam ,
śaṅkamāno bhṛgorbhāryāṁ punaḥ punarapṛcchata.
22. tat rakṣa evam āmantrya jvalitam jātavedasam
śaṅkamānaḥ bhṛgoḥ bhāryām punaḥ punaḥ apṛcchata
22. Therefore, having thus addressed the blazing Fire-god, 'O Protector!', he, suspecting Bhṛgu's wife, questioned him repeatedly.
त्वमग्ने सर्वभूतानामन्तश्चरसि नित्यदा ।
साक्षिवत्पुण्यपापेषु सत्यं ब्रूहि कवे वचः ॥२३॥
23. tvamagne sarvabhūtānāmantaścarasi nityadā ,
sākṣivatpuṇyapāpeṣu satyaṁ brūhi kave vacaḥ.
23. tvam agne sarvabhūtānām antaḥ carasi nityadā
sākṣivat puṇyapāpeṣu satyam brūhi kave vacaḥ
23. O Agni, you always move within all beings as a witness of merits and demerits. O sage, speak a true word.
मत्पूर्वभार्यापहृता भृगुणानृतकारिणा ।
सेयं यदि तथा मे त्वं सत्यमाख्यातुमर्हसि ॥२४॥
24. matpūrvabhāryāpahṛtā bhṛguṇānṛtakāriṇā ,
seyaṁ yadi tathā me tvaṁ satyamākhyātumarhasi.
24. matpūrvabhāryā apahṛtā bhṛguṇā anṛtakāriṇā sā
iyam yadi tathā me tvam satyam ākhyātum arhasi
24. My former wife was abducted by Bhṛgu, who acted deceitfully. If she is indeed that woman, then you must tell me the truth.
श्रुत्वा त्वत्तो भृगोर्भार्यां हरिष्याम्यहमाश्रमात् ।
जातवेदः पश्यतस्ते वद सत्यां गिरं मम ॥२५॥
25. śrutvā tvatto bhṛgorbhāryāṁ hariṣyāmyahamāśramāt ,
jātavedaḥ paśyataste vada satyāṁ giraṁ mama.
25. śrutvā tvattaḥ bhṛgoḥ bhāryām hariṣyāmi aham
āśramāt jātavedaḥ paśyataḥ te vada satyām giram mama
25. Having heard from you, I will abduct Bhṛgu's wife from the hermitage. O Jātavedas (Agni), with you as witness, declare my words to be true.
तस्य तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा सप्तार्चिर्दुःखितो भृशम् ।
भीतोऽनृताच्च शापाच्च भृगोरित्यब्रवीच्छनैः ॥२६॥
26. tasya tadvacanaṁ śrutvā saptārcirduḥkhito bhṛśam ,
bhīto'nṛtācca śāpācca bhṛgorityabravīcchanaiḥ.
26. tasya tat vacanam śrutvā saptārciḥ duḥkhitaḥ bhṛśam
bhītaḥ anṛtāt ca śāpāt ca bhṛgoḥ iti abravīt śanaiḥ
26. Having heard those words from him, Saptārciḥ (Agni) became greatly distressed. Fearing both falsehood and Bhṛgu's curse, he slowly spoke thus.
