अर्जुन उवाच ।
अस्माकमनुरूपो वै यः स्याद्गन्धर्व वेदवित् ।
पुरोहितस्तमाचक्ष्व सर्वं हि विदितं तव ॥१॥
1. arjuna uvāca ,
asmākamanurūpo vai yaḥ syādgandharva vedavit ,
purohitastamācakṣva sarvaṁ hi viditaṁ tava.
1. arjuna uvāca asmākam anurūpaḥ vai yaḥ syāt gandharva
vedavit purohitaḥ tam ācakṣva sarvam hi viditam tava
1. Arjuna said: 'Please tell us which Gandharva, knowledgeable in the Vedas, would be suitable as a family priest (purohita) for us. Indeed, everything is known to you.'
गन्धर्व उवाच ।
यवीयान्देवलस्यैष वने भ्राता तपस्यति ।
धौम्य उत्कोचके तीर्थे तं वृणुध्वं यदीच्छथ ॥२॥
2. gandharva uvāca ,
yavīyāndevalasyaiṣa vane bhrātā tapasyati ,
dhaumya utkocake tīrthe taṁ vṛṇudhvaṁ yadīcchatha.
2. gandharvaḥ uvāca | yavīyān devalasya eṣa vane bhrātā tapasyati
| dhaumyaḥ utkoṁcake tīrthe taṃ vṛṇudhvaṃ yadi icchatha
2. The Gandharva said, 'This is Devala's younger brother, Dhaumya, who is performing severe spiritual austerities (tapas) in the forest at the sacred ford (tīrtha) called Utkochaka. You should choose him if you wish.'
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
ततोऽर्जुनोऽस्त्रमाग्नेयं प्रददौ तद्यथाविधि ।
गन्धर्वाय तदा प्रीतो वचनं चेदमब्रवीत् ॥३॥
3. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
tato'rjuno'stramāgneyaṁ pradadau tadyathāvidhi ,
gandharvāya tadā prīto vacanaṁ cedamabravīt.
3. vaiśaṃpāyanaḥ uvāca | tataḥ
arjunaḥ astram āgneyaṃ pradadau tat
yathāvidhi | gandharvāya tadā
prītaḥ vacanam ca idam abravīt
3. Vaiśampāyana said, 'Then, pleased, Arjuna properly bestowed that fiery weapon (astra) upon the Gandharva according to the prescribed rites. He then spoke these words.'
त्वय्येव तावत्तिष्ठन्तु हया गन्धर्वसत्तम ।
कर्मकाले ग्रहीष्यामि स्वस्ति तेऽस्त्विति चाब्रवीत् ॥४॥
4. tvayyeva tāvattiṣṭhantu hayā gandharvasattama ,
karmakāle grahīṣyāmi svasti te'stviti cābravīt.
4. tvayi eva tāvat tiṣṭhantu hayāḥ gandharvasattama |
karmakāle grahīṣyāmi svasti te astu iti ca abravīt
4. 'O best of Gandharvas, let these horses remain with you for now. I will take them at the appropriate time for action (karma). May you be well,' he said.
तेऽन्योन्यमभिसंपूज्य गन्धर्वः पाण्डवाश्च ह ।
रम्याद्भागीरथीकच्छाद्यथाकामं प्रतस्थिरे ॥५॥
5. te'nyonyamabhisaṁpūjya gandharvaḥ pāṇḍavāśca ha ,
ramyādbhāgīrathīkacchādyathākāmaṁ pratasthire.
5. te anyonyam abhisaṃpūjya gandharvaḥ pāṇḍavāḥ ca ha
| ramyāt bhāgīrathīkacchāt yathākāmam pratastire
5. Having honored each other, the Gandharva and the Pāṇḍavas then departed as they wished from the beautiful banks of the Bhāgīrathī (Gaṅgā).
तत उत्कोचकं तीर्थं गत्वा धौम्याश्रमं तु ते ।
तं वव्रुः पाण्डवा धौम्यं पौरोहित्याय भारत ॥६॥
6. tata utkocakaṁ tīrthaṁ gatvā dhaumyāśramaṁ tu te ,
taṁ vavruḥ pāṇḍavā dhaumyaṁ paurohityāya bhārata.
6. tataḥ utkoṁcakam tīrtham gatvā dhaumyāśramam tu te
| tam vavruḥ pāṇḍavāḥ dhaumyam paurohityāya bhārata
6. Then, O Bhārata, having gone to the sacred ford (tīrtha) named Utkochaka, and to Dhaumya's hermitage (āśrama), the Pāṇḍavas chose him, Dhaumya, for the office of their family priest.
तान्धौम्यः प्रतिजग्राह सर्ववेदविदां वरः ।
पाद्येन फलमूलेन पौरोहित्येन चैव ह ॥७॥
7. tāndhaumyaḥ pratijagrāha sarvavedavidāṁ varaḥ ,
pādyena phalamūlena paurohityena caiva ha.
7. tān dhaumyaḥ pratijagrāha sarvavedavidām varaḥ
pādyena phalamūlena paurohityena ca eva ha
7. Dhaumya, the foremost among all who knew the Vedas, received them with an offering of water for their feet, fruits, and roots, thereby taking on the role of their priest.
ते तदाशंसिरे लब्धां श्रियं राज्यं च पाण्डवाः ।
तं ब्राह्मणं पुरस्कृत्य पाञ्चाल्याश्च स्वयंवरम् ॥८॥
8. te tadāśaṁsire labdhāṁ śriyaṁ rājyaṁ ca pāṇḍavāḥ ,
taṁ brāhmaṇaṁ puraskṛtya pāñcālyāśca svayaṁvaram.
8. te tadā āśaṃsire labdhām śriyam rājyam ca pāṇḍavāḥ
tam brāhmaṇam पुरस्कृत्य pāñcālyāḥ ca svayaṃvaram
8. Then the Pāṇḍavas, having honored that Brahmin, aspired to the prosperity and kingdom that seemed already obtained (due to Dhaumya's acceptance), and also to the self-choice ceremony (svayaṃvara) of Pāñcālī.
मातृषष्ठास्तु ते तेन गुरुणा संगतास्तदा ।
नाथवन्तमिवात्मानं मेनिरे भरतर्षभाः ॥९॥
9. mātṛṣaṣṭhāstu te tena guruṇā saṁgatāstadā ,
nāthavantamivātmānaṁ menire bharatarṣabhāḥ.
9. mātṛṣaṣṭāḥ tu te tena guruṇā saṅgatāḥ tadā
nāthavantam iva ātmānam menire bharatarṣabhāḥ
9. Indeed, those Pāṇḍavas, with their mother as the sixth, having then been united with that preceptor (guru), considered themselves as if having a protector.
स हि वेदार्थतत्त्वज्ञस्तेषां गुरुरुदारधीः ।
तेन धर्मविदा पार्था याज्याः सर्वविदा कृताः ॥१०॥
10. sa hi vedārthatattvajñasteṣāṁ gururudāradhīḥ ,
tena dharmavidā pārthā yājyāḥ sarvavidā kṛtāḥ.
10. saḥ hi vedārthatattvajñaḥ teṣām guruḥ udāradhīḥ
tena dharmavidā pārthāḥ yājyāḥ sarvavidā kṛtāḥ
10. Indeed, he was their preceptor (guru), a knower of the true essence of the Vedas and possessed of a noble intellect. By him, who understood natural law (dharma) and knew everything, the Pārthas were made eligible to be his patrons of sacrifice (yājyāḥ).
वीरांस्तु स हि तान्मेने प्राप्तराज्यान्स्वधर्मतः ।
बुद्धिवीर्यबलोत्साहैर्युक्तान्देवानिवापरान् ॥११॥
11. vīrāṁstu sa hi tānmene prāptarājyānsvadharmataḥ ,
buddhivīryabalotsāhairyuktāndevānivāparān.
11. vīrān tu saḥ hi tān mene prāptarājyān svadharmataḥ
buddhivīryabalotsāhaiḥ yuktān devān iva aparān
11. Indeed, he considered them brave individuals, who, by their own intrinsic nature (dharma), were as if already possessing a kingdom, and who were endowed with intellect, valor, strength, and enthusiasm, like other gods.
कृतस्वस्त्ययनास्तेन ततस्ते मनुजाधिपाः ।
मेनिरे सहिता गन्तुं पाञ्चाल्यास्तं स्वयंवरम् ॥१२॥
12. kṛtasvastyayanāstena tataste manujādhipāḥ ,
menire sahitā gantuṁ pāñcālyāstaṁ svayaṁvaram.
12. kṛtasvastyayanāḥ tena tataḥ te manujādhipāḥ
menire sahitāḥ gantum pāñcālyāḥ tam svayaṃvaram
12. Then, having had auspicious rites (svastyayana) performed for them, those princes (manujādhipāḥ) considered it proper to go together to Draupadī's (Pāñcālī) self-choice ceremony (svayaṃvara).
