भीष्म उवाच ।
एवमुक्तः प्रत्युवाच तं मुनिं जनमेजयः ।
गर्ह्यं भवान्गर्हयति निन्द्यं निन्दति मा भवान् ॥१॥
1. bhīṣma uvāca ,
evamuktaḥ pratyuvāca taṁ muniṁ janamejayaḥ ,
garhyaṁ bhavāngarhayati nindyaṁ nindati mā bhavān.

1. Bhishma said: Thus addressed, Janamejaya replied to that sage: 'Your honor blames what is censurable. (But) let your honor not blame one who is blameworthy.'
धिक्कार्यं मा धिक्कुरुते तस्मात्त्वाहं प्रसादये ।
सर्वं हीदं स्वकृतं मे ज्वलाम्यग्नाविवाहितः ॥२॥
2. dhikkāryaṁ mā dhikkurute tasmāttvāhaṁ prasādaye ,
sarvaṁ hīdaṁ svakṛtaṁ me jvalāmyagnāvivāhitaḥ.
2. dhikkāryaṃ mā dhikkurute tasmāt tvā aham prasādaye
sarvaṃ hi idam svakṛtaṃ me jvalāmi agnau iva āhitaḥ
2. (saḥ) dhikkāryaṃ mā dhikkurute.
tasmāt aham tvā prasādaye.
hi idam sarvaṃ me svakṛtaṃ.
(aham) agnau āhitaḥ iva jvalāmi.
2. He (the sage) blames me, who am indeed worthy of blame. Therefore, I seek your favor. For all this (suffering) is verily my own doing; I burn as if placed in fire.
स्वकर्माण्यभिसंधाय नाभिनन्दति मे मनः ।
प्राप्तं नूनं मया घोरं भयं वैवस्वतादपि ॥३॥
3. svakarmāṇyabhisaṁdhāya nābhinandati me manaḥ ,
prāptaṁ nūnaṁ mayā ghoraṁ bhayaṁ vaivasvatādapi.
3. svakarmāṇi abhisaṃdhāya na abhinandati me manaḥ
prāptam nūnam mayā ghoram bhayam vaivasvatāt api
3. me manaḥ svakarmāṇi abhisaṃdhāya na abhinandati
nūnam mayā ghoram bhayam vaivasvatāt api prāptam
3. My mind does not rejoice, having focused on my own actions (karma). Surely, terrible fear has been attained by me, even from Yama (Vaivasvata).
तत्तु शल्यमनिर्हृत्य कथं शक्ष्यामि जीवितुम् ।
सर्वमन्यून्विनीय त्वमभि मा वद शौनक ॥४॥
4. tattu śalyamanirhṛtya kathaṁ śakṣyāmi jīvitum ,
sarvamanyūnvinīya tvamabhi mā vada śaunaka.
4. tat tu śalyam anirhṛtya katham śakṣyāmi jīvitum
sarvamanyūn vinīya tvam abhi mā vada śaunaka
4. tu tat śalyam anirhṛtya katham jīvitum śakṣyāmi
śaunaka tvam sarvamanyūn vinīya mā abhi vada
4. But how can I live without extracting that thorn? O Śaunaka, after soothing all my grievances, speak to me.
महानसं ब्राह्मणानां भविष्याम्यर्थवान्पुनः ।
अस्तु शेषं कुलस्यास्य मा पराभूदिदं कुलम् ॥५॥
5. mahānasaṁ brāhmaṇānāṁ bhaviṣyāmyarthavānpunaḥ ,
astu śeṣaṁ kulasyāsya mā parābhūdidaṁ kulam.
5. mahānasam brāhmaṇānām bhaviṣyāmi arthavān punaḥ
astu śeṣam kulasya asya mā parābhūt idam kulam
5. aham punaḥ brāhmaṇānām mahānasam arthavān bhaviṣyāmi
asya kulasya śeṣam astu idam kulam mā parābhūt
5. I will again be wealthy (arthavān) for the Brahmins' great kitchen. Let there be a remainder of this family (kula); may this family not be destroyed.
न हि नो ब्रह्मशप्तानां शेषो भवितुमर्हति ।
श्रुतीरलभमानानां संविदं वेदनिश्चयात् ॥६॥
6. na hi no brahmaśaptānāṁ śeṣo bhavitumarhati ,
śrutīralabhamānānāṁ saṁvidaṁ vedaniścayāt.
6. na hi naḥ brahmaśaptānām śeṣaḥ bhavitum arhati
śrutīḥ alabhamānānām saṃvidam vedaniścayāt
6. hi naḥ brahmaśaptānām śeṣaḥ bhavitum na arhati
śrutīḥ alabhamānānām vedaniścayāt saṃvidam
6. Indeed, for us, who are cursed by Brahmins, no remnant is fit to remain. Similarly, for those who do not obtain the sacred texts (śruti), their understanding (saṃvid) lacks the certainty of the Veda.
निर्विद्यमानः सुभृशं भूयो वक्ष्यामि सांप्रतम् ।
भूयश्चैवाभिनङ्क्षन्ति निर्धर्मा निर्जपा इव ॥७॥
7. nirvidyamānaḥ subhṛśaṁ bhūyo vakṣyāmi sāṁpratam ,
bhūyaścaivābhinaṅkṣanti nirdharmā nirjapā iva.
7. nirvidyamānaḥ subhṛśam bhūyaḥ vakṣyāmi sāmpratam
bhūyaḥ ca eva abhinaṅkṣanti nirdharmāḥ nirjapāḥ iva
7. nirvidyamānaḥ subhṛśam sāmpratam bhūyaḥ vakṣyāmi
bhūyaḥ ca eva nirdharmāḥ nirjapāḥ iva abhinaṅkṣanti
7. Although greatly disillusioned, I will speak further now. And again, those who lack natural law (dharma) and spiritual recitation (japa) will surely perish.
अर्वाक्च प्रतितिष्ठन्ति पुलिन्दशबरा इव ।
न ह्ययज्ञा अमुं लोकं प्राप्नुवन्ति कथंचन ॥८॥
8. arvākca pratitiṣṭhanti pulindaśabarā iva ,
na hyayajñā amuṁ lokaṁ prāpnuvanti kathaṁcana.
8. arvāk ca pratitiṣṭhanti pulindaśabarāḥ iva na
hi ayajñāḥ amum lokam prāpnuvanti kathaṃcana
8. pulindaśabarāḥ iva (anye janāḥ) ca arvāk pratitiṣṭhanti.
(tu) hi ayajñāḥ amum lokam kathaṃcana na prāpnuvanti.
8. Even tribes like the Pulindas and Śabaras find their place (in this world). However, those who do not perform Vedic rituals (ayajña) can never attain that (higher) world.
अविज्ञायैव मे प्रज्ञां बालस्येव सुपण्डितः ।
ब्रह्मन्पितेव पुत्रेभ्यः प्रति मां वाञ्छ शौनक ॥९॥
9. avijñāyaiva me prajñāṁ bālasyeva supaṇḍitaḥ ,
brahmanpiteva putrebhyaḥ prati māṁ vāñcha śaunaka.
9. avijñāya eva me prajñām bālasya iva supaṇḍitaḥ
brahman pitā iva putrebhyaḥ prati mām vāñcha śaunaka
9. supaṇḍitaḥ brahman śaunaka bālasya iva me prajñām
avijñāya eva putrebhyaḥ iva mām prati vāñcha
9. O greatly learned one (supaṇḍita), without truly understanding my wisdom, just as one might overlook a child's understanding. O Brahmin Shaunaka, cherish me like a father cherishes his sons.
शौनक उवाच ।
किमाश्चर्यं यतः प्राज्ञो बहु कुर्याद्धि सांप्रतम् ।
इति वै पण्डितो भूत्वा भूतानां नोपतप्यति ॥१०॥
10. śaunaka uvāca ,
kimāścaryaṁ yataḥ prājño bahu kuryāddhi sāṁpratam ,
iti vai paṇḍito bhūtvā bhūtānāṁ nopatapyati.
10. śaunaka uvāca kim āścaryam yataḥ prājñaḥ bahu kuryāt hi
sāmpratam iti vai paṇḍitaḥ bhūtvā bhūtānām na upatapyati
10. śaunaka uvāca kim āścaryam yataḥ prājñaḥ sāmpratam bahu
hi kuryāt iti vai paṇḍitaḥ bhūtvā bhūtānām na upatapyati
10. Shaunaka said: What wonder is it that a wise man should accomplish much now? For, having become truly wise, he certainly does not torment (upatapyati) living beings.
प्रज्ञाप्रासादमारुह्य अशोच्यः शोचते जनान् ।
जगतीस्थानिवाद्रिस्थः प्रज्ञया प्रतिपश्यति ॥११॥
11. prajñāprāsādamāruhya aśocyaḥ śocate janān ,
jagatīsthānivādristhaḥ prajñayā pratipaśyati.
11. prajñāprāsādam āruhya aśocyaḥ śocate janān
jagatīsthān iva adristhaḥ prajñayā pratipaśyati
11. prajñāprāsādam āruhya,
aśocyaḥ janān śocate.
adristhaḥ jagatīsthān iva,
prajñayā pratipaśyati.
11. Having ascended the palace of wisdom (prajñā), one who is free from sorrow pities people. Like someone standing on a mountain observes those on the ground, such a person truly perceives by means of insight (prajñā).
न चोपलभते तत्र न च कार्याणि पश्यति ।
निर्विण्णात्मा परोक्षो वा धिक्कृतः सर्वसाधुषु ॥१२॥
12. na copalabhate tatra na ca kāryāṇi paśyati ,
nirviṇṇātmā parokṣo vā dhikkṛtaḥ sarvasādhuṣu.
12. na ca upalabhate tatra na ca kāryāṇi paśyati
nirviṇṇātmā parokṣaḥ vā dhikkṛtaḥ sarvasādhuṣu
12. ca tatra na upalabhate,
ca kāryāṇi na paśyati.
nirviṇṇātmā vā parokṣaḥ,
sarvasādhuṣu dhikkṛtaḥ.
12. One neither perceives it there nor sees (his own) actions. Such a person, whose inner self (ātman) is disheartened, or who remains unseen, is scorned by all virtuous individuals.
विदित्वोभयतो वीर्यं माहात्म्यं वेद आगमे ।
कुरुष्वेह महाशान्तिं ब्रह्मा शरणमस्तु ते ॥१३॥
13. viditvobhayato vīryaṁ māhātmyaṁ veda āgame ,
kuruṣveha mahāśāntiṁ brahmā śaraṇamastu te.
13. viditvā ubhayataḥ vīryam māhātmyam veda āgame
kuruṣva iha mahāśāntim brahmā śaraṇam astu te
13. ubhayataḥ veda āgame vīryam māhātmyam viditvā,
iha mahāśāntim kuruṣva.
te brahmā śaraṇam astu.
13. Having understood the power and greatness (described) in both the Veda and the sacred tradition (āgama), cultivate profound peace here (in this life). May the ultimate reality (brahman) be your refuge.
तद्वै पारत्रिकं चारु ब्राह्मणानामकुप्यताम् ।
अथ चेत्तप्यसे पापैर्धर्मं चेदनुपश्यसि ॥१४॥
14. tadvai pāratrikaṁ cāru brāhmaṇānāmakupyatām ,
atha cettapyase pāpairdharmaṁ cedanupaśyasi.
14. tat vai pāratrikam cāru brāhmaṇānām akupyatām
atha cet tapyase pāpaiḥ dharmam cet anupaśyasi
14. tat vai pāratrikam,
akupyatām brāhmaṇānām cāru.
atha cet pāpaiḥ tapyase,
cet dharmam anupaśyasi.
14. That (which was just mentioned) is indeed beneficial for the next world and pleasing to the Brahmins who are free from anger. Now, if you are tormented by sins and (if) you perceive the natural law (dharma)...
जनमेजय उवाच ।
अनुतप्ये च पापेन न चाधर्मं चराम्यहम् ।
बुभूषुं भजमानं च प्रतिवाञ्छामि शौनक ॥१५॥
15. janamejaya uvāca ,
anutapye ca pāpena na cādharmaṁ carāmyaham ,
bubhūṣuṁ bhajamānaṁ ca prativāñchāmi śaunaka.
15. janamejaya uvāca anutapye ca pāpena na ca adharmam
carāmi aham bubhūṣum bhajamānam ca prativāñchāmi śaunaka
15. janamejaya uvāca aham pāpena anutapye ca,
na ca adharmam carāmi śaunaka,
bubhūṣum ca bhajamānam ca prativāñchāmi
15. Janamejaya said: "I regret my past sins, and I do not commit unrighteousness (adharma). O Śaunaka, I seek one who wishes to prosper and is devoted."
शौनक उवाच ।
छित्त्वा स्तम्भं च मानं च प्रीतिमिच्छामि ते नृप ।
सर्वभूतहिते तिष्ठ धर्मं चैव प्रतिस्मर ॥१६॥
16. śaunaka uvāca ,
chittvā stambhaṁ ca mānaṁ ca prītimicchāmi te nṛpa ,
sarvabhūtahite tiṣṭha dharmaṁ caiva pratismara.
16. śaunaka uvāca chittvā stambham ca mānam ca prītim icchāmi
te nṛpa sarvabhūtahite tiṣṭha dharmam ca eva pratismara
16. śaunaka uvāca nṛpa,
stambham ca mānam ca chittvā,
te prītim icchāmi sarvabhūtahite tiṣṭha ca eva dharmam pratismara
16. Śaunaka said: "O King, giving up both obstinacy and conceit, I wish for your well-being. Abide in the welfare of all beings, and always remember your natural law (dharma)."
न भयान्न च कार्पण्यान्न लोभात्त्वामुपाह्वये ।
तां मे देवा गिरं सत्यां शृण्वन्तु ब्राह्मणैः सह ॥१७॥
17. na bhayānna ca kārpaṇyānna lobhāttvāmupāhvaye ,
tāṁ me devā giraṁ satyāṁ śṛṇvantu brāhmaṇaiḥ saha.
17. na bhayāt na ca kārpaṇyāt na lobhāt tvām upāhvaye
tām me devā giram satyām śṛṇvantu brāhmaṇaiḥ saha
17. bhayāt na,
ca kārpaṇyāt na,
lobhāt na,
tvām upāhvaye devāḥ,
brāhmaṇaiḥ saha me tām satyām giram śṛṇvantu
17. It is not out of fear, nor out of meanness, nor out of greed that I invoke you. May the gods, along with the Brahmins, hear this true statement of mine.
सोऽहं न केनचिच्चार्थी त्वां च धर्ममुपाह्वये ।
क्रोशतां सर्वभूतानामहो धिगिति कुर्वताम् ॥१८॥
18. so'haṁ na kenaciccārthī tvāṁ ca dharmamupāhvaye ,
krośatāṁ sarvabhūtānāmaho dhigiti kurvatām.
18. saḥ aham na kenacit ca arthī tvām ca dharmam upāhvaye
krośatām sarvabhūtānām aho dhik iti kurvatām
18. saḥ aham kenacit ca na arthī (asmi) tvām ca dharmam ca upāhvaye
krośatām sarvabhūtānām "aho dhik" iti kurvatām (madhye)
18. Therefore, I am not seeking anything from anyone. I invoke you and the natural law (dharma). I do this while all beings are crying out, exclaiming, 'Alas, shame!'
वक्ष्यन्ति मामधर्मज्ञा वक्ष्यन्त्यसुहृदो जनाः ।
वाचस्ताः सुहृदः श्रुत्वा संज्वरिष्यन्ति मे भृशम् ॥१९॥
19. vakṣyanti māmadharmajñā vakṣyantyasuhṛdo janāḥ ,
vācastāḥ suhṛdaḥ śrutvā saṁjvariṣyanti me bhṛśam.
19. vakṣyanti mām adharmajñāḥ vakṣyanti asuhṛdaḥ janāḥ
vācaḥ tāḥ suhṛdaḥ śrutvā saṃjvariṣyanti me bhṛśam
19. adharmajñāḥ mām vakṣyanti asuhṛdaḥ janāḥ (mām) vakṣyanti
suhṛdaḥ tāḥ vācaḥ śrutvā me bhṛśam saṃjvariṣyanti
19. The unrighteous, those ignorant of the natural law (dharma), will speak about me, and so will my enemies. Hearing those words, my friends will intensely grieve for me.
केचिदेव महाप्राज्ञाः परिज्ञास्यन्ति कार्यताम् ।
जानीहि मे कृतं तात ब्राह्मणान्प्रति भारत ॥२०॥
20. kecideva mahāprājñāḥ parijñāsyanti kāryatām ,
jānīhi me kṛtaṁ tāta brāhmaṇānprati bhārata.
20. kecit eva mahāprājñāḥ parijñāsyanti kāryatām
jānīhi me kṛtam tāta brāhmaṇān prati bhārata
20. tāta bhārata kecit eva mahāprājñāḥ kāryatām
parijñāsyanti tvam me kṛtam brāhmaṇān prati jānīhi
20. Only a few truly wise individuals will understand the necessity of this action. O dear one, O descendant of Bharata, know what I have done for the Brahmins.
यथा ते मत्कृते क्षेमं लभेरंस्तत्तथा कुरु ।
प्रतिजानीहि चाद्रोहं ब्राह्मणानां नराधिप ॥२१॥
21. yathā te matkṛte kṣemaṁ labheraṁstattathā kuru ,
pratijānīhi cādrohaṁ brāhmaṇānāṁ narādhipa.
21. yathā te matkṛte kṣemam labheran tat tathā kuru
pratijānīhi ca adroham brāhmaṇānām narādhipa
21. narādhipa yathā te matkṛte kṣemam labheran tat
tathā kuru ca brāhmaṇānām adroham pratijānīhi
21. Ensure that they (the Brahmins) obtain welfare because of me. And promise, O lord of men, that no harm will come to the Brahmins.
जनमेजय उवाच ।
नैव वाचा न मनसा न पुनर्जातु कर्मणा ।
द्रोग्धास्मि ब्राह्मणान्विप्र चरणावेव ते स्पृशे ॥२२॥
22. janamejaya uvāca ,
naiva vācā na manasā na punarjātu karmaṇā ,
drogdhāsmi brāhmaṇānvipra caraṇāveva te spṛśe.
22. janamejaya uvāca na eva vācā na manasā na punaḥ jātu
karmaṇā drogdhā asmi brāhmaṇān vipra caraṇau eva te spṛśe
22. janamejaya uvāca vipra aham vācā na manasā na karmaṇā na
punar jātu brāhmaṇān drogdhā asmi aham te caraṇau eva spṛśe
22. Janamejaya said: O wise one, I shall never harm the Brahmins by word, by thought, or by action (karma). I touch only your feet.
