वैशंपायन उवाच ।
ततस्ते भरतश्रेष्ठाः समाजग्मुः परस्परम् ।
विगतक्रोधमात्सर्याः सर्वे विगतकल्मषाः ॥१॥
1. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
tataste bharataśreṣṭhāḥ samājagmuḥ parasparam ,
vigatakrodhamātsaryāḥ sarve vigatakalmaṣāḥ.

1. Vaiśampāyana said: Then all those best of the Bharatas, free from anger and envy, and free from impurity, met each other.
विधिं परममास्थाय ब्रह्मर्षिविहितं शुभम् ।
संप्रीतमनसः सर्वे देवलोक इवामराः ॥२॥
2. vidhiṁ paramamāsthāya brahmarṣivihitaṁ śubham ,
saṁprītamanasaḥ sarve devaloka ivāmarāḥ.
2. vidhim paramam āsthāya brahmarṣivihitam śubham
samprītamanasaḥ sarve devaloke iva amarāḥ
2. sarve samprītamanasaḥ amarāḥ iva devaloke
brahmarṣivihitam paramam śubham vidhim āsthāya
2. All of them, with cheerful minds, like immortals in the celestial realm (devaloka), resorted to the supreme and auspicious rite, which had been ordained by the Brahmarshi.
पुत्रः पित्रा च मात्रा च भार्या च पतिना सह ।
भ्राता भ्रात्रा सखा चैव सख्या राजन्समागताः ॥३॥
3. putraḥ pitrā ca mātrā ca bhāryā ca patinā saha ,
bhrātā bhrātrā sakhā caiva sakhyā rājansamāgatāḥ.

3. O king, sons were reunited with their fathers and mothers, and wives with their husbands, and brothers with their brothers, and friends with their friends.
पाण्डवास्तु महेष्वासं कर्णं सौभद्रमेव च ।
संप्रहर्षात्समाजग्मुर्द्रौपदेयांश्च सर्वशः ॥४॥
4. pāṇḍavāstu maheṣvāsaṁ karṇaṁ saubhadrameva ca ,
saṁpraharṣātsamājagmurdraupadeyāṁśca sarvaśaḥ.
4. Pāṇḍavāḥ tu maheṣv-āsam Karṇam Saubhadram eva ca
sampraharṣāt samājagmuḥ Draupadeyān ca sarvaśaḥ
4. The Pāṇḍavas, filled with great joy, approached Karṇa, the great archer, as well as Saubhadra and all the sons of Draupadī.
ततस्ते प्रीयमाणा वै कर्णेन सह पाण्डवाः ।
समेत्य पृथिवीपालाः सौहृदेऽवस्थिताभवन् ॥५॥
5. tataste prīyamāṇā vai karṇena saha pāṇḍavāḥ ,
sametya pṛthivīpālāḥ sauhṛde'vasthitābhavan.
5. tataḥ te prīyamāṇāḥ vai Karṇena saha Pāṇḍavāḥ
sametya pṛthivī-pālāḥ sauhṛde avasthitāḥ abhavan
5. Then the Pāṇḍavas, those protectors of the earth, being pleased, met with Karṇa, and thus became firmly established in friendship.
ऋषिप्रसादात्तेऽन्ये च क्षत्रिया नष्टमन्यवः ।
असौहृदं परित्यज्य सौहृदे पर्यवस्थिताः ॥६॥
6. ṛṣiprasādātte'nye ca kṣatriyā naṣṭamanyavaḥ ,
asauhṛdaṁ parityajya sauhṛde paryavasthitāḥ.
6. ṛṣi-prasādāt te anye ca Kṣatriyāḥ naṣṭa-manyavaḥ
asauhṛdam parityajya sauhṛde paryavasthitāḥ
6. By the grace of the sages, those other warriors (kṣatriyāḥ) whose anger had vanished, abandoning their animosity, also became firmly established in friendship.
एवं समागताः सर्वे गुरुभिर्बान्धवैस्तथा ।
पुत्रैश्च पुरुषव्याघ्राः कुरवोऽन्ये च मानवाः ॥७॥
7. evaṁ samāgatāḥ sarve gurubhirbāndhavaistathā ,
putraiśca puruṣavyāghrāḥ kuravo'nye ca mānavāḥ.
7. evam samāgatāḥ sarve gurubhiḥ bāndhavaiḥ tathā
putraiḥ ca puruṣa-vyāghrāḥ Kuravaḥ anye ca mānavāḥ
7. Thus, all the Kurus and other human beings, those heroes (puruṣavyāghrāḥ), having gathered together with their preceptors, relatives, and sons.
तां रात्रिमेकां कृत्स्नां ते विहृत्य प्रीतमानसाः ।
मेनिरे परितोषेण नृपाः स्वर्गसदो यथा ॥८॥
8. tāṁ rātrimekāṁ kṛtsnāṁ te vihṛtya prītamānasāḥ ,
menire paritoṣeṇa nṛpāḥ svargasado yathā.
8. tām rātrim ekām kṛtsnām te vihṛtya prītamānasāḥ
menire paritoṣeṇa nṛpāḥ svargasadāḥ yathā
8. te prītamānasāḥ nṛpāḥ tām ekām kṛtsnām rātrim
vihṛtya svargasadāḥ yathā paritoṣeṇa menire
8. Those kings, with joyful hearts, having spent that entire single night, felt satisfied just like the inhabitants of heaven.
नात्र शोको भयं त्रासो नारतिर्नायशोऽभवत् ।
परस्परं समागम्य योधानां भरतर्षभ ॥९॥
9. nātra śoko bhayaṁ trāso nāratirnāyaśo'bhavat ,
parasparaṁ samāgamya yodhānāṁ bharatarṣabha.
9. na atra śokaḥ bhayam trāsaḥ na aratiḥ na ayaśaḥ
abhavat parasparam samāgamya yodhānām bharatarṣabha
9. bharatarṣabha yodhānām parasparam samāgamya atra
śokaḥ na bhayam trāsaḥ na aratiḥ na ayaśaḥ abhavat
9. O best of the Bharatas, when the warriors met each other, there was no grief (śoka), no fear, no terror, no discontent, and no dishonor.
समागतास्ताः पितृभिर्भ्रातृभिः पतिभिः सुतैः ।
मुदं परमिकां प्राप्य नार्यो दुःखमथात्यजन् ॥१०॥
10. samāgatāstāḥ pitṛbhirbhrātṛbhiḥ patibhiḥ sutaiḥ ,
mudaṁ paramikāṁ prāpya nāryo duḥkhamathātyajan.
10. samāgatāḥ tāḥ pitṛbhiḥ bhrātṛbhiḥ patibhiḥ sutaiḥ
mudam paramikām prāpya nāryaḥ duḥkham atha atyajan
10. tāḥ nāryaḥ pitṛbhiḥ bhrātṛbhiḥ patibhiḥ sutaiḥ
samāgatāḥ paramikām mudam prāpya atha duḥkham atyajan
10. Those women, having reunited with their fathers, brothers, husbands, and sons, attained supreme joy, and then they abandoned their sorrow.
एकां रात्रिं विहृत्यैवं ते वीरास्ताश्च योषितः ।
आमन्त्र्यान्योन्यमाश्लिष्य ततो जग्मुर्यथागतम् ॥११॥
11. ekāṁ rātriṁ vihṛtyaivaṁ te vīrāstāśca yoṣitaḥ ,
āmantryānyonyamāśliṣya tato jagmuryathāgatam.
11. ekām rātrim vihṛtya evam te vīrāḥ tāḥ ca yoṣitaḥ
āmantrya anyonyam āśliṣya tataḥ jagmuḥ yathāgatam
11. te vīrāḥ tāḥ ca yoṣitaḥ evam ekām rātrim vihṛtya
anyonyam āmantrya āśliṣya tataḥ yathāgatam jagmuḥ
11. Having spent one night in this manner, those heroes and those women, after bidding farewell to each other and embracing, then departed as they had arrived.
ततो विसर्जयामास लोकांस्तान्मुनिपुंगवः ।
क्षणेनान्तर्हिताश्चैव प्रेक्षतामेव तेऽभवन् ॥१२॥
12. tato visarjayāmāsa lokāṁstānmunipuṁgavaḥ ,
kṣaṇenāntarhitāścaiva prekṣatāmeva te'bhavan.
12. tataḥ visarjayāmāsa lokān tān munipuṅgavaḥ
kṣaṇena antahṛtāḥ ca eva prekṣatām eva te abhavan
12. tataḥ munipuṅgavaḥ tān lokān visarjayāmāsa te
ca eva kṣaṇena prekṣatām eva antahṛtāḥ abhavan
12. Then the foremost sage (muni) dismissed those people. And instantly, even as they watched, they vanished.
अवगाह्य महात्मानः पुण्यां त्रिपथगां नदीम् ।
सरथाः सध्वजाश्चैव स्वानि स्थानानि भेजिरे ॥१३॥
13. avagāhya mahātmānaḥ puṇyāṁ tripathagāṁ nadīm ,
sarathāḥ sadhvajāścaiva svāni sthānāni bhejire.
13. avagāhya mahātmānaḥ puṇyām tripathagām nadīm
sarathāḥ sadhvajāḥ ca eva svāni sthānāni bhejire
13. mahātmānaḥ puṇyām tripathagām nadīm avagāhya
sarathāḥ sadhvajāḥ ca eva svāni sthānāni bhejire
13. Having bathed in the sacred river Gaṅgā, the great souls, complete with their chariots and banners, returned to their own abodes.
देवलोकं ययुः केचित्केचिद्ब्रह्मसदस्तथा ।
केचिच्च वारुणं लोकं केचित्कौबेरमाप्नुवन् ॥१४॥
14. devalokaṁ yayuḥ kecitkecidbrahmasadastathā ,
kecicca vāruṇaṁ lokaṁ kecitkauberamāpnuvan.
14. devalokam yayuḥ kecit kecit brahmasadaḥ tathā
kecit ca vāruṇam lokam kecit kauberam āpnuvan
14. kecit devalokam yayuḥ kecit tathā brahmasadaḥ
kecit ca vāruṇam lokam kecit kauberam āpnuvan
14. Some went to the celestial realm, others to the abode of Brahmā. Some went to the realm of Varuṇa, and others attained the realm of Kubera.
तथा वैवस्वतं लोकं केचिच्चैवाप्नुवन्नृपाः ।
राक्षसानां पिशाचानां केचिच्चाप्युत्तरान्कुरून् ॥१५॥
15. tathā vaivasvataṁ lokaṁ keciccaivāpnuvannṛpāḥ ,
rākṣasānāṁ piśācānāṁ keciccāpyuttarānkurūn.
15. tathā vaivasvatam lokam kecit ca eva āpnuvan nṛpāḥ
rākṣasānām piśācānām kecit ca api uttarān kurūn
15. tathā kecit nṛpāḥ vaivasvatam lokam ca eva āpnuvan
kecit ca rākṣasānām piśācānām api uttarān kurūn
15. Similarly, some kings indeed attained the realm of Yama. And some also reached the lands of the rākṣasas and piśācas, while others went to the Uttarakurūs.
विचित्रगतयः सर्वे या अवाप्यामरैः सह ।
आजग्मुस्ते महात्मानः सवाहाः सपदानुगाः ॥१६॥
16. vicitragatayaḥ sarve yā avāpyāmaraiḥ saha ,
ājagmuste mahātmānaḥ savāhāḥ sapadānugāḥ.
16. vicitragatayaḥ sarve yāḥ avāpya amaraiḥ saha
ājagmuḥ te mahātmānaḥ savāhāḥ sapadānugāḥ
16. te sarve mahātmānaḥ vicitragatayaḥ yāḥ amaraiḥ
saha avāpya savāhāḥ sapadānugāḥ ājagmuḥ
16. All those great-souled ones, who had attained diverse destinies along with the immortals (devas), arrived there with their vehicles and attendants.
गतेषु तेषु सर्वेषु सलिलस्थो महामुनिः ।
धर्मशीलो महातेजाः कुरूणां हितकृत्सदा ।
ततः प्रोवाच ताः सर्वाः क्षत्रिया निहतेश्वराः ॥१७॥
17. gateṣu teṣu sarveṣu salilastho mahāmuniḥ ,
dharmaśīlo mahātejāḥ kurūṇāṁ hitakṛtsadā ,
tataḥ provāca tāḥ sarvāḥ kṣatriyā nihateśvarāḥ.
17. gateṣu teṣu sarveṣu salilasthaḥ
mahāmuniḥ dharmaśīlaḥ mahātejāḥ
kurūṇām hitakṛt sadā tataḥ provāca
tāḥ sarvāḥ kṣatriyāḥ nihateśvarāḥ
17. teṣu sarveṣu gateṣu tataḥ salilasthaḥ
dharmaśīlaḥ mahātejāḥ kurūṇām
sadā hitakṛt mahāmuniḥ tāḥ sarvāḥ
nihateśvarāḥ kṣatriyāḥ provāca
17. After all of them had departed, the great sage (muni), who remained in the water, virtuous and greatly effulgent, and ever a benefactor of the Kurus, then spoke to all those Kshatriya women whose husbands had been slain.
या याः पतिकृताँल्लोकानिच्छन्ति परमस्त्रियः ।
ता जाह्नवीजलं क्षिप्रमवगाहन्त्वतन्द्रिताः ॥१८॥
18. yā yāḥ patikṛtāँllokānicchanti paramastriyaḥ ,
tā jāhnavījalaṁ kṣipramavagāhantvatandritāḥ.
18. yāḥ yāḥ patikṛtān lokān icchanti paramastriyaḥ
tāḥ jāhnavījalam kṣipram avagāhantu atandritāḥ
18. yāḥ yāḥ paramastriyaḥ patikṛtān lokān icchanti
tāḥ atandritāḥ kṣipram jāhnavījalam avagāhantu
18. Whichever excellent women desire the realms attained by their husbands, let them diligently and quickly immerse themselves in the waters of the Ganga.
ततस्तस्य वचः श्रुत्वा श्रद्दधाना वराङ्गनाः ।
श्वशुरं समनुज्ञाप्य विविशुर्जाह्नवीजलम् ॥१९॥
19. tatastasya vacaḥ śrutvā śraddadhānā varāṅganāḥ ,
śvaśuraṁ samanujñāpya viviśurjāhnavījalam.
19. tataḥ tasya vacaḥ śrutvā śraddadhānāḥ varāṅganāḥ
śvaśuram samanujñāpya viviśuḥ jāhnavījalam
19. tataḥ tasya vacaḥ śrutvā śraddadhānāḥ varāṅganāḥ
śvaśuram samanujñāpya jāhnavījalam viviśuḥ
19. Then, having heard his words, the faithful excellent women, after taking leave of their father-in-law, entered the waters of the Ganga.
विमुक्ता मानुषैर्देहैस्ततस्ता भर्तृभिः सह ।
समाजग्मुस्तदा साध्व्यः सर्वा एव विशां पते ॥२०॥
20. vimuktā mānuṣairdehaistatastā bhartṛbhiḥ saha ,
samājagmustadā sādhvyaḥ sarvā eva viśāṁ pate.
20. vimuktā mānuṣaiḥ dehaiḥ tataḥ tāḥ bhartṛbhiḥ saha
samājagmuḥ tadā sādhvyaḥ sarvāḥ eva viśām pate
20. viśām pate,
tāḥ sarvāḥ sādhvyaḥ mānuṣaiḥ dehaiḥ vimuktā tataḥ tadā bhartṛbhiḥ saha samājagmuḥ
20. O lord of the people, all those virtuous women, having shed their human bodies, then at that time reunited with their husbands.
एवं क्रमेण सर्वास्ताः शीलवत्यः कुलस्त्रियः ।
प्रविश्य तोयं निर्मुक्ता जग्मुर्भर्तृसलोकताम् ॥२१॥
21. evaṁ krameṇa sarvāstāḥ śīlavatyaḥ kulastriyaḥ ,
praviśya toyaṁ nirmuktā jagmurbhartṛsalokatām.
21. evam krameṇa sarvāḥ tāḥ śīlavatyaḥ kulastriyaḥ
praviśya toyam nirmuktāḥ jagmuḥ bhartṛsalokatām
21. evam krameṇa tāḥ sarvāḥ śīlavatyaḥ kulastriyaḥ
toyam praviśya nirmuktāḥ bhartṛsalokatām jagmuḥ
21. Thus, in due course, all those virtuous noble ladies, having entered the water, became liberated and attained the same world as their husbands.
दिव्यरूपसमायुक्ता दिव्याभरणभूषिताः ।
दिव्यमाल्याम्बरधरा यथासां पतयस्तथा ॥२२॥
22. divyarūpasamāyuktā divyābharaṇabhūṣitāḥ ,
divyamālyāmbaradharā yathāsāṁ patayastathā.
22. divyarūpasamāyuktā divyābharaṇabhūṣitāḥ
divyamālyāmbaradharā yathā āsām patayaḥ tathā
22. yathā āsām patayaḥ tathā divyarūpasamāyuktā
divyābharaṇabhūṣitāḥ divyamālyāmbaradharā
22. They were endowed with divine forms, adorned with divine ornaments, and wore divine garlands and garments, just as their husbands were.
ताः शीलसत्त्वसंपन्ना वितमस्का गतक्लमाः ।
सर्वाः सर्वगुणैर्युक्ताः स्वं स्वं स्थानं प्रपेदिरे ॥२३॥
23. tāḥ śīlasattvasaṁpannā vitamaskā gataklamāḥ ,
sarvāḥ sarvaguṇairyuktāḥ svaṁ svaṁ sthānaṁ prapedire.
23. tāḥ śīlasattvasampannā vitamaskā gataklamāḥ sarvāḥ
sarvaguṇaiḥ yuktāḥ svam svam sthānam prapedire
23. tāḥ sarvāḥ śīlasattvasampannā vitamaskā gataklamāḥ
sarvaguṇaiḥ yuktāḥ svam svam sthānam prapedire
23. All those women, endowed with virtue and goodness, free from darkness and weariness, and possessing all good qualities, reached their respective abodes.
यस्य यस्य च यः कामस्तस्मिन्कालेऽभवत्तदा ।
तं तं विसृष्टवान्व्यासो वरदो धर्मवत्सलः ॥२४॥
24. yasya yasya ca yaḥ kāmastasminkāle'bhavattadā ,
taṁ taṁ visṛṣṭavānvyāso varado dharmavatsalaḥ.
24. yasya yasya ca yaḥ kāmaḥ tasmin kāle abhavat tadā
tam tam visṛṣṭavān vyāsaḥ varadaḥ dharmavatsalaḥ
24. Whatever specific desire each person had at that time, it was fulfilled. Vyāsa, the bestower of boons and one devoted to natural law (dharma), brought forth each of those (desired individuals).
तच्छ्रुत्वा नरदेवानां पुनरागमनं नराः ।
जहृषुर्मुदिताश्चासन्नन्यदेहगता अपि ॥२५॥
25. tacchrutvā naradevānāṁ punarāgamanaṁ narāḥ ,
jahṛṣurmuditāścāsannanyadehagatā api.
25. tat śrutvā naradevānām punarāgamanam narāḥ
jahṛṣuḥ muditāḥ ca āsan anyadehagatāḥ api
25. Having heard of that return of the human-like deities (their ancestors), the people (living relatives) rejoiced and were delighted. Even those (ancestors) who had attained other bodies (and returned) were also delighted.
प्रियैः समागमं तेषां य इमं शृणुयान्नरः ।
प्रियाणि लभते नित्यमिह च प्रेत्य चैव ह ॥२६॥
26. priyaiḥ samāgamaṁ teṣāṁ ya imaṁ śṛṇuyānnaraḥ ,
priyāṇi labhate nityamiha ca pretya caiva ha.
26. priyaiḥ samāgamam teṣām yaḥ imam śṛṇuyāt naraḥ
priyāṇi labhate nityam iha ca pretya ca eva ha
26. Any man who listens to this (story) about the reunion of those (living relatives) with their loved ones (the deceased ancestors) will constantly obtain beloved things, both in this world and after death.
इष्टबान्धवसंयोगमनायासमनामयम् ।
य इमं श्रावयेद्विद्वान्संसिद्धिं प्राप्नुयात्पराम् ॥२७॥
27. iṣṭabāndhavasaṁyogamanāyāsamanāmayam ,
ya imaṁ śrāvayedvidvānsaṁsiddhiṁ prāpnuyātparām.
27. iṣṭabāndhavasaṃyogam anāyāsam anāmayam yaḥ imam
śrāvayet vidvān saṃsiddhim prāpnuyāt parām
27. That learned person who causes this narrative about the effortless and blissful union with desired relatives to be heard, he will attain supreme perfection.
स्वाध्याययुक्ताः पुरुषाः क्रियायुक्ताश्च भारत ।
अध्यात्मयोगयुक्ताश्च धृतिमन्तश्च मानवाः ।
श्रुत्वा पर्व त्विदं नित्यमवाप्स्यन्ति परां गतिम् ॥२८॥
28. svādhyāyayuktāḥ puruṣāḥ kriyāyuktāśca bhārata ,
adhyātmayogayuktāśca dhṛtimantaśca mānavāḥ ,
śrutvā parva tvidaṁ nityamavāpsyanti parāṁ gatim.
28. svādhyāyayuktāḥ puruṣāḥ kriyāyuktāḥ
ca bhārata adhyātmayogayuktāḥ ca
dhṛtimantaḥ ca mānavāḥ śrutvā parva
tu idam nityam avāpsyanti parām gatim
28. bhārata svādhyāyayuktāḥ ca kriyāyuktāḥ
ca adhyātmayogayuktāḥ ca dhṛtimantaḥ
ca mānavāḥ puruṣāḥ idam tu parva
nityam śrutvā parām gatim avāpsyanti
28. O Bhārata, those persons who are devoted to self-study (svādhyāya), engaged in (Vedic) rituals, dedicated to spiritual (yoga) practices, and human beings endowed with fortitude, will certainly attain the supreme destination by constantly listening to this section.
