Saṃjaya said: When that heroic Śālva, who was splendid in assembly and battle, was struck down, your army swiftly broke apart, just like a great tree is shattered by the wind.

Seeing that shattered army, Kṛtavarmā, the great charioteer, who was heroic and immensely powerful, held back the enemy forces in battle.

O King, those brave warriors turned back upon seeing Sātvata, who stood firm like a mountain in the fight, being showered by arrows in battle.

Then, O great king, the battle between the Kurus and the Pāṇḍavas resumed; for those who had previously turned back, retreat now meant facing death.

There, an astonishing battle occurred involving Sātvata against his enemies, as he alone held back the formidable Pāṇḍava army.

24.
Sātvata (Sātyaki) indeed, in battle, having pierced and shattered that spear with sharp arrows, made it fall, as if bewildering Kṛtavarmā (Mādhava). Then, with another arrow, he struck him in the heart.

In that battle, Kṛtavarmā, whose horses and charioteer had been killed by Yuyudhāna (Sātyaki), the master of weapons (kṛtāstra), fell to the ground.

When that hero (Kṛtavarmā) was uncharioted by Sātyaki in a single combat, a very great fear arose among all the armies.

And your son became extremely dejected when Kṛtavarman's charioteer was killed, his horses were killed, and he was left without a chariot.

And O King, Kṛpa, having seen Kṛtavarman, whose horses and charioteer were killed, rushed forward, wishing to kill Sātyaki (śinipuṅgava), the subduer of enemies (arim-dama).

The mighty-armed Kṛpa, having placed Kṛtavarman on the platform of his chariot, quickly carried him away from the battlefield, even while all the archers were watching.

O King, when Sātyaki (śaineya) was situated (on the chariot) and Kṛtavarman was charioless, all of Duryodhana's army again turned away in retreat.

O King, at that moment, when the area was covered by the army's dust, your people did not perceive what was happening and fled, all except King Duryodhana.

But Duryodhana, having observed his own army routed from nearby, swiftly rushed forward and, all alone, held back all of them (the advancing enemies).

Greatly enraged, (he also checked) all the Pandavas, Dhrishtadyumna (pārṣata), Shikhandin, the Draupadeyas, and the troops who belonged to the Panchalas.

O respected one (māriṣa), the unassailable Duryodhana, undismayed, held back the Kekayas, as well as the Somakas, and also the Panchalas with his sharp weapons.

Your immensely powerful son stood prepared in battle, just as a great fire, purified by sacred verses (mantra), shines brightly in a ritual (yajña).

36.
The enemies could not confront him in battle, just as mortals cannot confront death. Then Hārdikya, having mounted another chariot, joined the fray.
