द्रुपद उवाच ।
भूतानां प्राणिनः श्रेष्ठाः प्राणिनां बुद्धिजीविनः ।
बुद्धिमत्सु नराः श्रेष्ठा नराणां तु द्विजातयः ॥१॥
1. drupada uvāca ,
bhūtānāṁ prāṇinaḥ śreṣṭhāḥ prāṇināṁ buddhijīvinaḥ ,
buddhimatsu narāḥ śreṣṭhā narāṇāṁ tu dvijātayaḥ.
1. drupadaḥ uvāca | bhūtānām prāṇinaḥ śreṣṭhāḥ prāṇinām
buddhi-jīvinaḥ | buddhimatsu narāḥ śreṣṭhā narāṇām tu dvijātayaḥ
1. Drupada said: Among all creatures (bhūta), living beings (prāṇin) are superior. Among living beings, those who live by intelligence are superior. Among the intelligent, humans (nara) are superior. And among humans, the twice-born (dvijāti) are superior.
द्विजेषु वैद्याः श्रेयांसो वैद्येषु कृतबुद्धयः ।
स भवान्कृतबुद्धीनां प्रधान इति मे मतिः ॥२॥
2. dvijeṣu vaidyāḥ śreyāṁso vaidyeṣu kṛtabuddhayaḥ ,
sa bhavānkṛtabuddhīnāṁ pradhāna iti me matiḥ.
2. dvijeṣu vaidyāḥ śreyāṃsaḥ vaidyeṣu kṛta-buddhayaḥ
| sa bhavān kṛta-buddhīnām pradhānaḥ iti me matiḥ
2. Among the twice-born (dvija), those learned in the Vedas (vaidya) are superior. Among the learned, those with a determined intellect are superior. You, revered sir, are considered foremost among those with determined intellects - this is my firm opinion.
कुलेन च विशिष्टोऽसि वयसा च श्रुतेन च ।
प्रज्ञयानवमश्चासि शुक्रेणाङ्गिरसेन च ॥३॥
3. kulena ca viśiṣṭo'si vayasā ca śrutena ca ,
prajñayānavamaścāsi śukreṇāṅgirasena ca.
3. kulena ca viśiṣṭaḥ asi vayasā ca śrutena ca
prajñayā anavamaḥ ca asi śukreṇa aṅgirasena ca
3. You are distinguished by your lineage, your age, and your extensive learning. Furthermore, you are not inferior in wisdom to even Shukra and Angiras.
विदितं चापि ते सर्वं यथावृत्तः स कौरवः ।
पाण्डवश्च यथावृत्तः कुन्तीपुत्रो युधिष्ठिरः ॥४॥
4. viditaṁ cāpi te sarvaṁ yathāvṛttaḥ sa kauravaḥ ,
pāṇḍavaśca yathāvṛttaḥ kuntīputro yudhiṣṭhiraḥ.
4. viditam ca api te sarvam yathāvṛttaḥ saḥ kauravaḥ
pāṇḍavaḥ ca yathāvṛttaḥ kuntīputraḥ yudhiṣṭhiraḥ
4. Indeed, everything is known to you: how that Kaurava (Duryodhana) behaved, and similarly, how the Pandava, Yudhishthira, son of Kunti, conducted himself.
धृतराष्ट्रस्य विदिते वञ्चिताः पाण्डवाः परैः ।
विदुरेणानुनीतोऽपि पुत्रमेवानुवर्तते ॥५॥
5. dhṛtarāṣṭrasya vidite vañcitāḥ pāṇḍavāḥ paraiḥ ,
vidureṇānunīto'pi putramevānuvartate.
5. dhṛtarāṣṭrasya vidite vañcitāḥ pāṇḍavāḥ paraiḥ
vidureṇa anunītaḥ api putram eva anuvartate
5. Even with Dhritarashtra's full awareness, the Pandavas were deceived by their adversaries. Although advised by Vidura, he (Dhritarashtra) continues to follow only his son.
शकुनिर्बुद्धिपूर्वं हि कुन्तीपुत्रं समाह्वयत् ।
अनक्षज्ञं मताक्षः सन्क्षत्रवृत्ते स्थितं शुचिम् ॥६॥
6. śakunirbuddhipūrvaṁ hi kuntīputraṁ samāhvayat ,
anakṣajñaṁ matākṣaḥ sankṣatravṛtte sthitaṁ śucim.
6. śakuniḥ buddhipūrvam hi kuntīputram samāhvayat
anakṣajñam matākṣaḥ san kṣatravṛtte sthitam śucim
6. Indeed, Shakuni deliberately challenged Kunti's son, Yudhishthira, who was unskilled in dice. Shakuni, being proficient in dice himself, targeted Yudhishthira, who was pure and steadfast in the duties of a warrior (kṣatriya).
ते तथा वञ्चयित्वा तु धर्मपुत्रं युधिष्ठिरम् ।
न कस्यांचिदवस्थायां राज्यं दास्यन्ति वै स्वयम् ॥७॥
7. te tathā vañcayitvā tu dharmaputraṁ yudhiṣṭhiram ,
na kasyāṁcidavasthāyāṁ rājyaṁ dāsyanti vai svayam.
7. te tathā vañcayitvā tu dharmaputram yudhiṣṭhiram
na kasyāmcit avasthāyām rājyam dāsyanti vai svayam
7. Having thus deceived Yudhiṣṭhira, the son of Dharma (dharma), they will certainly not willingly give the kingdom themselves under any circumstances.
भवांस्तु धर्मसंयुक्तं धृतराष्ट्रं ब्रुवन्वचः ।
मनांसि तस्य योधानां ध्रुवमावर्तयिष्यति ॥८॥
8. bhavāṁstu dharmasaṁyuktaṁ dhṛtarāṣṭraṁ bruvanvacaḥ ,
manāṁsi tasya yodhānāṁ dhruvamāvartayiṣyati.
8. bhavān tu dharmasaṃyuktam dhṛtarāṣṭram bruvan
vacaḥ manāṃsi tasya yodhānām dhruvam āvartayīṣyati
8. But you, by speaking words aligned with Dharma (dharma) to Dhṛtarāṣṭra, will certainly influence the minds of his warriors.
विदुरश्चापि तद्वाक्यं साधयिष्यति तावकम् ।
भीष्मद्रोणकृपाणां च भेदं संजनयिष्यति ॥९॥
9. viduraścāpi tadvākyaṁ sādhayiṣyati tāvakam ,
bhīṣmadroṇakṛpāṇāṁ ca bhedaṁ saṁjanayiṣyati.
9. viduraḥ ca api tat vākyam sādhayīṣyati tāvakam
bhīṣmadroṇakṛpāṇām ca bhedam saṃjanayīṣyati
9. Moreover, Vidura will also bring about your counsel, and he will create dissension among Bhīṣma, Droṇa, and Kṛpa.
अमात्येषु च भिन्नेषु योधेषु विमुखेषु च ।
पुनरेकाग्रकरणं तेषां कर्म भविष्यति ॥१०॥
10. amātyeṣu ca bhinneṣu yodheṣu vimukheṣu ca ,
punarekāgrakaraṇaṁ teṣāṁ karma bhaviṣyati.
10. amātyeṣu ca bhinneṣu yodheṣu vimukheṣu ca
punaḥ ekāgrakaraṇam teṣām karma bhaviṣyati
10. And when the ministers are divided and the warriors are disaffected, then to bring them back to a single purpose will become their endeavor (karma).
एतस्मिन्नन्तरे पार्थाः सुखमेकाग्रबुद्धयः ।
सेनाकर्म करिष्यन्ति द्रव्याणां चैव संचयम् ॥११॥
11. etasminnantare pārthāḥ sukhamekāgrabuddhayaḥ ,
senākarma kariṣyanti dravyāṇāṁ caiva saṁcayam.
11. etasmin antare pārthāḥ sukham ekāgrabuddhayaḥ
senākarma kariṣyanti dravyāṇām ca eva saṃcayam
11. During this interval, the sons of Pṛthā, with focused minds, will comfortably perform military operations and indeed gather resources.
भिद्यमानेषु च स्वेषु लम्बमाने च वै त्वयि ।
न तथा ते करिष्यन्ति सेनाकर्म न संशयः ॥१२॥
12. bhidyamāneṣu ca sveṣu lambamāne ca vai tvayi ,
na tathā te kariṣyanti senākarma na saṁśayaḥ.
12. bhidyāmāneṣu ca sveṣu lambamāne ca vai tvayi
na tathā te kariṣyanti senākarma na saṃśayaḥ
12. But when there is division among their own ranks and you yourself delay, they will certainly not perform military operations in that manner; there is no doubt about this.
एतत्प्रयोजनं चात्र प्राधान्येनोपलभ्यते ।
संगत्या धृतराष्ट्रश्च कुर्याद्धर्म्यं वचस्तव ॥१३॥
13. etatprayojanaṁ cātra prādhānyenopalabhyate ,
saṁgatyā dhṛtarāṣṭraśca kuryāddharmyaṁ vacastava.
13. etat prayojanam ca atra prādhānyena upalabhyate
saṅgatyā dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ ca kuryāt dharmyam vacaḥ tava
13. And this objective is chiefly achieved here: that Dhṛtarāṣṭra, through reconciliation, should act according to your counsel, which is in accordance with natural law (dharma).
स भवान्धर्मयुक्तश्च धर्म्यं तेषु समाचरन् ।
कृपालुषु परिक्लेशान्पाण्डवानां प्रकीर्तयन् ॥१४॥
14. sa bhavāndharmayuktaśca dharmyaṁ teṣu samācaran ,
kṛpāluṣu parikleśānpāṇḍavānāṁ prakīrtayan.
14. saḥ bhavān dharmayuktaḥ ca dharmyam teṣu samācaran
kṛpāluṣu parikleśān pāṇḍavānām prakīrtayan
14. You, sir, being righteous (dharma) and acting justly (dharma) towards them, should proclaim the great afflictions of the Pāṇḍavas to the compassionate ones.
वृद्धेषु कुलधर्मं च ब्रुवन्पूर्वैरनुष्ठितम् ।
विभेत्स्यति मनांस्येषामिति मे नात्र संशयः ॥१५॥
15. vṛddheṣu kuladharmaṁ ca bruvanpūrvairanuṣṭhitam ,
vibhetsyati manāṁsyeṣāmiti me nātra saṁśayaḥ.
15. vṛddheṣu kuladharmaṃ ca bruvan pūrvaiḥ anuṣṭhitam
vibhetsyati manāṃsi eṣām iti me na atra saṃśayaḥ
15. When he speaks about the family constitution (dharma) that has been observed by their ancestors, even among the elders, he will surely split their minds. Of this, I have no doubt.
न च तेभ्यो भयं तेऽस्ति ब्राह्मणो ह्यसि वेदवित् ।
दूतकर्मणि युक्तश्च स्थविरश्च विशेषतः ॥१६॥
16. na ca tebhyo bhayaṁ te'sti brāhmaṇo hyasi vedavit ,
dūtakarmaṇi yuktaśca sthaviraśca viśeṣataḥ.
16. na ca tebhyaḥ bhayam te asti brāhmaṇaḥ hi asi
vedavit dūtakarmaṇi yuktaḥ ca sthaviraḥ ca viśeṣataḥ
16. And you have no fear of them, for you are indeed a brahmin, a knower of the Vedas. Moreover, you are engaged in ambassadorial duties and are especially experienced.
स भवान्पुष्ययोगेन मुहूर्तेन जयेन च ।
कौरवेयान्प्रयात्वाशु कौन्तेयस्यार्थसिद्धये ॥१७॥
17. sa bhavānpuṣyayogena muhūrtena jayena ca ,
kauraveyānprayātvāśu kaunteyasyārthasiddhaye.
17. sa bhavān puṣyayogena muhūrtena jayena ca
kauraveyān prayātu āśu kaunteyasya arthasiddhaye
17. Therefore, may you depart swiftly to the Kauravas, under the auspicious constellation of Puṣya, at a propitious moment, and with the assurance of victory, for the accomplishment of Kunti's son's (Arjuna) objective.
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
तथानुशिष्टः प्रययौ द्रुपदेन महात्मना ।
पुरोधा वृत्तसंपन्नो नगरं नागसाह्वयम् ॥१८॥
18. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
tathānuśiṣṭaḥ prayayau drupadena mahātmanā ,
purodhā vṛttasaṁpanno nagaraṁ nāgasāhvayam.
18. vaiśaṃpāyanaḥ uvāca tathā anuśiṣṭaḥ prayayau drupadena
mahātmanā purodhāḥ vṛttasampannaḥ nagaram nāgasāhvayam
18. Vaiśampāyana said: Thus instructed by the great-souled Drupada, the priest, who was endowed with good conduct, proceeded to the city named Hāstinapura.
