युधिष्ठिर उवाच ।
दानं बहुविधाकारं शान्तिः सत्यमहिंसता ।
स्वदारतुष्टिश्चोक्ता ते फलं दानस्य चैव यत् ॥१॥

1. Yudhishthira said: Diverse forms of giving (dāna), peace, truthfulness, non-violence, and contentment with one's own wife – these, and also the fruit of giving, have been explained by you.
पितामहस्य विदितं किमन्यत्र तपोबलात् ।
तपसो यत्परं तेऽद्य तन्मे व्याख्यातुमर्हसि ॥२॥
2. pitāmahasya viditaṁ kimanyatra tapobalāt ,
tapaso yatparaṁ te'dya tanme vyākhyātumarhasi.
2. pitāmahasya viditam kim anyatra tapaḥ balāt
tapasaḥ yat param te adya tat me vyākhyātum arhasi

2. What else is known to the grandfather (Bhishma), apart from the power of spiritual austerity (tapas)? You should explain to me today that which is considered the highest form of it.
भीष्म उवाच ।
तपः प्रचक्षते यावत्तावल्लोका युधिष्ठिर ।
मतं मम तु कौन्तेय तपो नानशनात्परम् ॥३॥
3. bhīṣma uvāca ,
tapaḥ pracakṣate yāvattāvallokā yudhiṣṭhira ,
mataṁ mama tu kaunteya tapo nānaśanātparam.

3. Bhīṣma said: "O Yudhiṣṭhira, people declare various forms of austerity (tapas), but in my opinion, O son of Kuntī, no austerity (tapas) is superior to fasting."
अत्राप्युदाहरन्तीममितिहासं पुरातनम् ।
भगीरथस्य संवादं ब्रह्मणश्च महात्मनः ॥४॥
4. atrāpyudāharantīmamitihāsaṁ purātanam ,
bhagīrathasya saṁvādaṁ brahmaṇaśca mahātmanaḥ.

4. Here they also relate this ancient narrative, the dialogue between Bhagīratha and the great-souled Brahmā.
अतीत्य सुरलोकं च गवां लोकं च भारत ।
ऋषिलोकं च सोऽगच्छद्भगीरथ इति श्रुतिः ॥५॥
5. atītya suralokaṁ ca gavāṁ lokaṁ ca bhārata ,
ṛṣilokaṁ ca so'gacchadbhagīratha iti śrutiḥ.
5. atītya suralokam ca gavām lokam ca bhārata
ṛṣilokam ca saḥ agacchat bhagīrathaḥ iti śrutiḥ
5. bhārata saḥ bhagīrathaḥ suralokam ca gavām

5. O Bhārata, having passed beyond the world of the gods and the world of cows, Bhagīratha also went to the world of sages; such is the sacred tradition (śruti).
तं दृष्ट्वा स वचः प्राह ब्रह्मा राजन्भगीरथम् ।
कथं भगीरथागास्त्वमिमं देशं दुरासदम् ॥६॥
6. taṁ dṛṣṭvā sa vacaḥ prāha brahmā rājanbhagīratham ,
kathaṁ bhagīrathāgāstvamimaṁ deśaṁ durāsadam.
6. tam dṛṣṭvā saḥ vacaḥ prāha brahmā rājan bhagīratham
katham bhagīratha agāḥ tvam imam deśam durāsadam
6. tam dṛṣṭvā saḥ brahmā rājan bhagīratham vacaḥ prāha

6. Having seen him, Brahmā spoke these words to King Bhagīratha: "O Bhagīratha, how did you reach this inaccessible region?"
न हि देवा न गन्धर्वा न मनुष्या भगीरथ ।
आयान्त्यतप्ततपसः कथं वै त्वमिहागतः ॥७॥
7. na hi devā na gandharvā na manuṣyā bhagīratha ,
āyāntyataptatapasaḥ kathaṁ vai tvamihāgataḥ.
7. na hi devāḥ na gandharvāḥ na manuṣyāḥ bhagīratha
āyanti atapta-tapasaḥ katham vai tvam iha āgataḥ
7. bhagīratha na hi devāḥ na gandharvāḥ na manuṣyāḥ
atapta-tapasaḥ āyanti tvam vai iha katham āgataḥ
7. No, neither gods, nor gandharvas, nor humans, O Bhagīratha, arrive here without having performed severe austerities (tapas). How then have you come here?
भगीरथ उवाच ।
निःशङ्कमन्नमददं ब्राह्मणेभ्यः शतं सहस्राणि सदैव दानम् ।
ब्राह्मं व्रतं नित्यमास्थाय विद्धि न त्वेवाहं तस्य फलादिहागाम् ॥८॥
8. bhagīratha uvāca ,
niḥśaṅkamannamadadaṁ brāhmaṇebhyaḥ; śataṁ sahasrāṇi sadaiva dānam ,
brāhmaṁ vrataṁ nityamāsthāya viddhi; na tvevāhaṁ tasya phalādihāgām.
8. bhagīratha uvāca niḥśaṅkam annam adadam
brāhmaṇebhyaḥ śatam sahasrāṇi sadā eva
dānam brāhmam vratam nityam āsthāya
viddhi na tu eva aham tasya phalāt iha āgām
8. bhagīratha uvāca aham niḥśaṅkam brāhmaṇebhyaḥ
śatam sahasrāṇi annam sadā eva dānam
adadam brāhmam vratam nityam āsthāya
viddhi tu aham tasya phalāt iha na eva āgām
8. Bhagīratha said: 'I fearlessly gave food (anna) to Brahmins - hundreds of thousands of donations (dāna) always. Know that I regularly performed the sacred vow (brāhma vrata), but I did not come here by the fruit of that (action).
दशैकरात्रान्दश पञ्चरात्रानेकादशैकादशकान्क्रतूंश्च ।
ज्योतिष्टोमानां च शतं यदिष्टं फलेन तेनापि च नागतोऽहम् ॥९॥
9. daśaikarātrāndaśa pañcarātrā;nekādaśaikādaśakānkratūṁśca ,
jyotiṣṭomānāṁ ca śataṁ yadiṣṭaṁ; phalena tenāpi ca nāgato'ham.
9. daśa ekarātrān daśa pañcarātrān
ekādaśa ekādaśakān kratūṁ ca
jyotiṣṭomānām ca śatam yat iṣṭam
phalena tena api ca na āgataḥ aham
9. aham daśa ekarātrān daśa pañcarātrān
ekādaśa ekādaśakān ca kratūṁ
ca jyotiṣṭomānām śatam yat
iṣṭam tena phalena api na āgataḥ
9. Even by the fruit of performing ten one-night Vedic rituals, ten five-night Vedic rituals, eleven eleven-night Vedic rituals, and a hundred Jyotiṣṭoma Vedic rituals, which were desired offerings - I have not come here.
यच्चावसं जाह्नवीतीरनित्यः शतं समास्तप्यमानस्तपोऽहम् ।
अदां च तत्राश्वतरीसहस्रं नारीपुरं न च तेनाहमागाम् ॥१०॥
10. yaccāvasaṁ jāhnavītīranityaḥ; śataṁ samāstapyamānastapo'ham ,
adāṁ ca tatrāśvatarīsahasraṁ; nārīpuraṁ na ca tenāhamāgām.
10. yat ca āvasam jāhnavī-tīre nityaḥ
śatam samāḥ tapyamānaḥ tapaḥ
aham adām ca tatra aśvatarī-sahasram
nārī-puram na ca tena aham āgām
10. aham nityaḥ jāhnavī-tīre śatam
samāḥ tapaḥ tapyamānaḥ ca yat āvasam
tatra ca aśvatarī-sahasram
nārī-puram adām tena ca aham na āgām
10. And I, being constant, resided on the bank of the Jahnavī for a hundred years, performing austerities (tapas). There, I also gave a thousand female mules and a town of women, but I did not come here by that (merit).
दशायुतानि चाश्वानामयुतानि च विंशतिम् ।
पुष्करेषु द्विजातिभ्यः प्रादां गाश्च सहस्रशः ॥११॥
11. daśāyutāni cāśvānāmayutāni ca viṁśatim ,
puṣkareṣu dvijātibhyaḥ prādāṁ gāśca sahasraśaḥ.
11. daśa-ayutāni ca aśvānām ayutāni ca viṃśatim |
puṣkareṣu dvijātibhyaḥ prādām gāḥ ca sahasraśaḥ
11. aham puṣkareṣu dvijātibhyaḥ daśa-ayutāni aśvānām
ca viṃśatim ayutāni gāḥ ca sahasraśaḥ prādām
11. I gave ten myriads of horses and twenty myriads of cows, as well as thousands of cows, to the twice-born (dvija) in Puṣkara.
सुवर्णचन्द्रोडुपधारिणीनां कन्योत्तमानामददं स्रग्विणीनाम् ।
षष्टिं सहस्राणि विभूषितानां जाम्बूनदैराभरणैर्न तेन ॥१२॥
12. suvarṇacandroḍupadhāriṇīnāṁ; kanyottamānāmadadaṁ sragviṇīnām ,
ṣaṣṭiṁ sahasrāṇi vibhūṣitānāṁ; jāmbūnadairābharaṇairna tena.
12. suvarṇa-candra-uḍupa-dhāriṇīnām
kanyā-uttamānām adadam sragviṇīnām
| ṣaṣṭim sahasrāṇi vibhūṣitānām
jāmbū-nadaiḥ ābharaṇaiḥ na tena
12. aham ṣaṣṭim sahasrāṇi kanyā-uttamānām
sragviṇīnām suvarṇa-candra-uḍupa-dhāriṇīnām
jāmbū-nadaiḥ
ābharaṇaiḥ vibhūṣitānām adadam na tena
12. I gave sixty thousand excellent maidens, who wore golden crescents and stars, adorned with garlands, and decorated with ornaments of the finest gold (jāmbūnada), and not by that.
दशार्बुदान्यददं गोसवेज्यास्वेकैकशो दश गा लोकनाथ ।
समानवत्साः पयसा समन्विताः सुवर्णकांस्योपदुहा न तेन ॥१३॥
13. daśārbudānyadadaṁ gosavejyā;svekaikaśo daśa gā lokanātha ,
samānavatsāḥ payasā samanvitāḥ; suvarṇakāṁsyopaduhā na tena.
13. daśa-arbudāni adadam go-savejyāsu
eka-ekaśaḥ daśa gāḥ loka-nātha
| samāna-vatsāḥ payasā samanvitāḥ
suvarṇa-kāṃsya-upaduhā na tena
13. loka-nātha! aham go-savejyāsu eka-ekaśaḥ daśa daśa-arbudāni gāḥ adadam tāḥ samāna-vatsāḥ payasā samanvitāḥ suvarṇa-kāṃsya-upaduhā āsan,
na tena.
13. O Lord of the worlds (loka-nātha)! I gave one hundred million cows, ten each in the (yajña) rituals involving cows; they were accompanied by their calves, endowed with milk, and with milking vessels of gold and bronze, and not by that.
अप्तोर्यामेषु नियतमेकैकस्मिन्दशाददम् ।
गृष्टीनां क्षीरदात्रीणां रोहिणीनां न तेन च ॥१४॥
14. aptoryāmeṣu niyatamekaikasmindaśādadam ,
gṛṣṭīnāṁ kṣīradātrīṇāṁ rohiṇīnāṁ na tena ca.
14. aptoryāmeṣu niyatam eka-ekasmin daśa adadam |
gṛṣṭīnām kṣīra-dātrīṇām rohiṇīnām na tena ca
14. aham aptoryāmeṣu eka-ekasmin niyatam daśa gṛṣṭīnām kṣīra-dātrīṇām rohiṇīnām adadam,
na tena ca.
14. In the Aptoryāma (yajña) rituals, I consistently gave ten cows in each, which were heifers, milk-giving, and of reddish color, and not by that either.
दोग्ध्रीणां वै गवां चैव प्रयुतानि दशैव ह ।
प्रादां दशगुणं ब्रह्मन्न च तेनाहमागतः ॥१५॥
15. dogdhrīṇāṁ vai gavāṁ caiva prayutāni daśaiva ha ,
prādāṁ daśaguṇaṁ brahmanna ca tenāhamāgataḥ.
15. dogdhrīṇām vai gavām ca eva prayutāni daśa eva ha
| prādām daśaguṇam brahman na ca tena aham āgataḥ
15. brahman,
dogdhrīṇām gavām ca eva vai daśaguṇam daśa eva ha prayutāni prādām,
tena ca aham na āgataḥ
15. Indeed, O (brahman), I gave one hundred million milch cows, yet I have not attained (the desired state) through that (action).
वाजिनां बाह्लिजातानामयुतान्यददं दश ।
कर्काणां हेममालानां न च तेनाहमागतः ॥१६॥
16. vājināṁ bāhlijātānāmayutānyadadaṁ daśa ,
karkāṇāṁ hemamālānāṁ na ca tenāhamāgataḥ.
16. vājinām bāhlijātānām ayutāni adadam daśa |
karkāṇām hemamālānām na ca tena aham āgataḥ
16. aham bāhlijātānām vājinām karkāṇām hemamālānām daśa ayutāni adadam,
tena ca aham na āgataḥ
16. I gave one hundred thousand horses born in Bāhlika, (specifically) white horses adorned with golden garlands, yet I have not attained (the desired state) through that (action).
कोटीश्च काञ्चनस्याष्टौ प्रादां ब्रह्मन्दश त्वहम् ।
एकैकस्मिन्क्रतौ तेन फलेनाहं न चागतः ॥१७॥
17. koṭīśca kāñcanasyāṣṭau prādāṁ brahmandaśa tvaham ,
ekaikasminkratau tena phalenāhaṁ na cāgataḥ.
17. koṭīḥ ca kāñcanasya aṣṭau prādām brahman daśa tu aham
| ekaikasmin kratau tena phalena aham na ca āgataḥ
17. brahman,
aham ekaikasmin kratau kāñcanasya aṣṭau ca daśa koṭīḥ prādām,
tena phalena ca aham na āgataḥ
17. Indeed, O (brahman), in each (kratu) (Vedic ritual) I gave eighteen crores (180 million) of gold, yet I have not attained (the desired state) through that result.
वाजिनां श्यामकर्णानां हरितानां पितामह ।
प्रादां हेमस्रजां ब्रह्मन्कोटीर्दश च सप्त च ॥१८॥
18. vājināṁ śyāmakarṇānāṁ haritānāṁ pitāmaha ,
prādāṁ hemasrajāṁ brahmankoṭīrdaśa ca sapta ca.
18. vājinām śyāmakarṇānām haritānām pitāmaha |
prādām hemasrajām brahman koṭīḥ daśa ca sapta ca
18. pitāmaha,
brahman,
aham śyāmakarṇānām haritānām hemasrajām vājinām daśa ca sapta ca koṭīḥ prādām
18. O grandfather, O (brahman), I gave seventeen crores (170 million) of horses with dark ears, (and) greenish-yellow horses, (all) adorned with golden garlands.
ईषादन्तान्महाकायान्काञ्चनस्रग्विभूषितान् ।
पत्नीमतः सहस्राणि प्रायच्छं दश सप्त च ॥१९॥
19. īṣādantānmahākāyānkāñcanasragvibhūṣitān ,
patnīmataḥ sahasrāṇi prāyacchaṁ daśa sapta ca.
19. īṣādantān mahākāyān kāñcanasragvibhūṣitān
patnīmataḥ sahasrāṇi prāyaccham daśa sapta ca
19. aham īṣādantān mahākāyān kāñcanasragvibhūṣitān
patnīmataḥ daśa sapta ca sahasrāṇi prāyaccham
19. I gave seventeen thousand (elephants) that had tusks like ploughshares, possessed huge bodies, were adorned with golden garlands, and were accompanied by their consorts.
अलंकृतानां देवेश दिव्यैः कनकभूषणैः ।
रथानां काञ्चनाङ्गानां सहस्राण्यददं दश ।
सप्त चान्यानि युक्तानि वाजिभिः समलंकृतैः ॥२०॥
20. alaṁkṛtānāṁ deveśa divyaiḥ kanakabhūṣaṇaiḥ ,
rathānāṁ kāñcanāṅgānāṁ sahasrāṇyadadaṁ daśa ,
sapta cānyāni yuktāni vājibhiḥ samalaṁkṛtaiḥ.
20. alaṅkṛtānām deveśa divyaiḥ
kanakabhūṣaṇaiḥ rathānām kāñcanāṅgānām
sahasrāṇi adadam daśa sapta ca
anyāni yuktāni vājibhiḥ samalaṅkṛtaiḥ
20. deveśa aham divyaiḥ kanakabhūṣaṇaiḥ
kāñcanāṅgānām alaṅkṛtānām daśa
rathānām sahasrāṇi ca sapta anyāni
samalaṅkṛtaiḥ vājibhiḥ yuktāni adadam
20. O lord of gods, I gave ten thousand chariots adorned with divine golden ornaments and featuring golden components. Additionally, I gave another seven thousand (chariots) that were equipped with well-decorated horses.
दक्षिणावयवाः केचिद्वेदैर्ये संप्रकीर्तिताः ।
वाजपेयेषु दशसु प्रादां तेनापि नाप्यहम् ॥२१॥
21. dakṣiṇāvayavāḥ kecidvedairye saṁprakīrtitāḥ ,
vājapeyeṣu daśasu prādāṁ tenāpi nāpyaham.
21. dakṣiṇāvayavāḥ kecit vedaiḥ ye samprakīrtitāḥ
vājapeyeṣu daśasu prādām tena api na api aham
21. aham daśasu vājapeyeṣu vedaiḥ ye samprakīrtitāḥ
kecit dakṣiṇāvayavāḥ prādām tena api na api
21. Some of the components of the ritual fee (dakṣiṇā) which are fully described in the Vedas for the ten Vājapeya (Vedic rituals) – even those I gave, yet even by that, I was not satisfied.
शक्रतुल्यप्रभावानामिज्यया विक्रमेण च ।
सहस्रं निष्ककण्ठानामददं दक्षिणामहम् ॥२२॥
22. śakratulyaprabhāvānāmijyayā vikrameṇa ca ,
sahasraṁ niṣkakaṇṭhānāmadadaṁ dakṣiṇāmaham.
22. śakratulyaprabhāvānām ijyayā vikrameṇa ca
sahasram niṣkakaṇṭhānām adadam dakṣiṇām aham
22. aham ijyayā vikrameṇa ca śakratulyaprabhāvānām
niṣkakaṇṭhānām sahasram dakṣiṇām adadam
22. I gave a thousand (priests), whose splendor was equal to Indra's, distinguished by their performance of Vedic rituals (yajña) and valor, and who wore golden necklaces, as a ritual fee (dakṣiṇā).
विजित्य नृपतीन्सर्वान्मखैरिष्ट्वा पितामह ।
अष्टभ्यो राजसूयेभ्यो न च तेनाहमागतः ॥२३॥
23. vijitya nṛpatīnsarvānmakhairiṣṭvā pitāmaha ,
aṣṭabhyo rājasūyebhyo na ca tenāhamāgataḥ.
23. vijitya nṛpatīn sarvān makhaiḥ iṣṭvā pitāmaha
aṣṭabhyaḥ rājasūyebhyaḥ na ca tena aham āgataḥ
23. O Grandfather, even after conquering all kings and performing numerous (Vedic rituals) (yajñas), including eight royal consecration (Vedic rituals) (rājasūyas), I did not arrive (at the desired destination or state) by those actions.
स्रोतश्च यावद्गङ्गायाश्छन्नमासीज्जगत्पते ।
दक्षिणाभिः प्रवृत्ताभिर्मम नागां च तत्कृते ॥२४॥
24. srotaśca yāvadgaṅgāyāśchannamāsījjagatpate ,
dakṣiṇābhiḥ pravṛttābhirmama nāgāṁ ca tatkṛte.
24. srotas ca yāvat gaṅgāyāḥ channam āsīt jagatpate
dakṣiṇābhiḥ pravṛttābhiḥ mama nāgān ca tatkṛte
24. O Lord of the world, for the sake of those (rituals), the stream of the Gaṅgā itself was (as if) covered by the abundant ritual fees and my elephants.
वाजिनां च सहस्रे द्वे सुवर्णशतभूषिते ।
वरं ग्रामशतं चाहमेकैकस्य त्रिधाददम् ।
तपस्वी नियताहारः शममास्थाय वाग्यतः ॥२५॥
25. vājināṁ ca sahasre dve suvarṇaśatabhūṣite ,
varaṁ grāmaśataṁ cāhamekaikasya tridhādadam ,
tapasvī niyatāhāraḥ śamamāsthāya vāgyataḥ.
25. vājinām ca sahasre dve suvarṇaśatabhūṣite
varam grāmaśatam ca aham
ekaikasya tridhā adadam tapasvī
niyatāhāraḥ śamam āsthāya vāgyataḥ
25. I gave two thousand horses, each adorned with hundreds of gold, and also three hundred excellent villages to each (recipient). (Thus, I became) an ascetic, with a restricted diet, having embraced tranquility, and controlling my speech.
दीर्घकालं हिमवति गङ्गायाश्च दुरुत्सहाम् ।
मूर्ध्ना धारां महादेवः शिरसा यामधारयत् ।
न तेनाप्यहमागच्छं फलेनेह पितामह ॥२६॥
26. dīrghakālaṁ himavati gaṅgāyāśca durutsahām ,
mūrdhnā dhārāṁ mahādevaḥ śirasā yāmadhārayat ,
na tenāpyahamāgacchaṁ phaleneha pitāmaha.
26. dīrghakālam himavati gaṅgāyāḥ ca
durutsahām mūrdhnā dhārām mahādevaḥ
śirasā yām adhārayat na tena api
aham āgaccham phalena iha pitāmaha
26. For a long time on the Himālaya, Mahādeva held the unbearable stream of the Gaṅgā with his head. O Grandfather, even by that result, I have not arrived (at my goal) here.
शम्याक्षेपैरयजं यच्च देवान्सद्यस्कानामयुतैश्चापि यत्तत् ।
त्रयोदशद्वादशाहांश्च देव सपौण्डरीकान्न च तेषां फलेन ॥२७॥
27. śamyākṣepairayajaṁ yacca devā;nsadyaskānāmayutaiścāpi yattat ,
trayodaśadvādaśāhāṁśca deva; sapauṇḍarīkānna ca teṣāṁ phalena.
27. śamyākṣepaiḥ ayajam yat ca devān
sadyaskānām ayutaiḥ ca api yat
tat trayodaśadvādaśāhān ca deva
sapaunḍarīkān na ca teṣām phalena
27. deva yat ca śamyākṣepaiḥ devān

27. O divine one, I performed (yajñas) for the gods by throwing ritual sticks, and I also performed tens of thousands of sadyaska (yajñas), and those lasting thirteen and twelve days, along with Paundarika (yajñas); yet, I did not do so for the sake of their results.
अष्टौ सहस्राणि ककुद्मिनामहं शुक्लर्षभाणामददं ब्राह्मणेभ्यः ।
एकैकं वै काञ्चनं शृङ्गमेभ्यः पत्नीश्चैषामददं निष्ककण्ठीः ॥२८॥
28. aṣṭau sahasrāṇi kakudmināmahaṁ; śuklarṣabhāṇāmadadaṁ brāhmaṇebhyaḥ ,
ekaikaṁ vai kāñcanaṁ śṛṅgamebhyaḥ; patnīścaiṣāmadadaṁ niṣkakaṇṭhīḥ.
28. aṣṭau sahasrāṇi kakudminām aham
śuklarṣabhāṇām adadam brāhmaṇebhyaḥ
ekāikam vai kāñcanam śṛṅgam ebhyah
patnīḥ ca eṣām adadam niṣkakaṇṭhīḥ
28. aham brāhmaṇebhyaḥ aṣṭau sahasrāṇi
kakudminām śuklarṣabhāṇām adadam
ekāikam vai kāñcanam śṛṅgam ebhyah
patnīḥ ca eṣām adadam niṣkakaṇṭhīḥ
28. I gave eight thousand white, humped bulls to the (brahmin)s. Indeed, I gave a golden horn to each of them, and I also gave them wives adorned with golden necklaces.
हिरण्यरत्ननिचितानददं रत्नपर्वतान् ।
धनधान्यसमृद्धांश्च ग्रामाञ्शतसहस्रशः ॥२९॥
29. hiraṇyaratnanicitānadadaṁ ratnaparvatān ,
dhanadhānyasamṛddhāṁśca grāmāñśatasahasraśaḥ.

29. I gave mountains filled with gold and jewels, and also hundreds of thousands of villages prosperous with wealth and grain.
शतं शतानां गृष्टीनामददं चाप्यतन्द्रितः ।
इष्ट्वानेकैर्महायज्ञैर्ब्राह्मणेभ्यो न तेन च ॥३०॥
30. śataṁ śatānāṁ gṛṣṭīnāmadadaṁ cāpyatandritaḥ ,
iṣṭvānekairmahāyajñairbrāhmaṇebhyo na tena ca.
30. śatam śatānām gṛṣṭīnām adadam ca api atandritaḥ
iṣṭvā anekaiḥ mahāyajñaiḥ brāhmaṇebhyaḥ na tena ca
30. atandritaḥ aham śatam śatānām gṛṣṭīnām adadam ca api
anekaiḥ mahāyajñaiḥ iṣṭvā brāhmaṇebhyaḥ na tena ca
30. And diligently, I gave ten thousand prime milch-cows to the (brahmin)s. And having performed many great (yajñas), I did not do so for the sake of their results either.
एकादशाहैरयजं सदक्षिणैर्द्विर्द्वादशाहैरश्वमेधैश्च देव ।
आर्कायणैः षोडशभिश्च ब्रह्मंस्तेषां फलेनेह न चागतोऽस्मि ॥३१॥
31. ekādaśāhairayajaṁ sadakṣiṇai;rdvirdvādaśāhairaśvamedhaiśca deva ,
ārkāyaṇaiḥ ṣoḍaśabhiśca brahmaṁ;steṣāṁ phaleneha na cāgato'smi.
31. ekādaśāhaiḥ ayajam sadakṣiṇaiḥ dviḥ
dvādaśāhaiḥ aśvamedhaiḥ ca deva
ārkāyaṇaiḥ ṣoḍaśabhiḥ ca brahman
teṣām phalena iha na ca āgataḥ asmi
31. deva brahman aham ekādaśāhaiḥ sadakṣiṇaiḥ
ayajam ca dviḥ dvādaśāhaiḥ
aśvamedhaiḥ ca ṣoḍaśabhiḥ ārkāyaṇaiḥ ca
teṣām phalena iha na ca āgataḥ asmi
31. O God, O (brahman), I performed eleven-day Vedic rituals with appropriate gifts, and twice performed twelve-day horse (aśvamedha) Vedic rituals, and sixteen Arkayana Vedic rituals. Yet, I have not arrived here by the fruit of those [deeds].
निष्कैककण्ठमददं योजनायतं तद्विस्तीर्णं काञ्चनपादपानाम् ।
वनं चूतानां रत्नविभूषितानां न चैव तेषामागतोऽहं फलेन ॥३२॥
32. niṣkaikakaṇṭhamadadaṁ yojanāyataṁ; tadvistīrṇaṁ kāñcanapādapānām ,
vanaṁ cūtānāṁ ratnavibhūṣitānāṁ; na caiva teṣāmāgato'haṁ phalena.
32. niṣkaikakaṇṭham adadam yojanāyatam
tat vistīrṇam kāñcanapādapānām
vanam cūtānām ratnavibhūṣitānām na
ca eva teṣām āgataḥ aham phalena
32. aham niṣkaikakaṇṭham adadam ca

ca eva na aham teṣām phalena āgataḥ
32. I gave a unique golden necklace (niṣkaikakaṇṭham) and a forest of jeweled golden mango trees, extending for a yojana in length and width. Yet, I have not come here by the fruit of those [deeds].
तुरायणं हि व्रतमप्रधृष्यमक्रोधनोऽकरवं त्रिंशतोऽब्दान् ।
शतं गवामष्ट शतानि चैव दिने दिने ह्यददं ब्राह्मणेभ्यः ॥३३॥
33. turāyaṇaṁ hi vratamapradhṛṣya;makrodhano'karavaṁ triṁśato'bdān ,
śataṁ gavāmaṣṭa śatāni caiva; dine dine hyadadaṁ brāhmaṇebhyaḥ.
33. turāyaṇam hi vratam apradhṛṣyam
akrodhanaḥ akaravam triṁśataḥ abdān
śatam gavām aṣṭa śatāni ca eva
dine dine hi adadam brāhmaṇebhyaḥ
33. hi aham akrodhanaḥ apradhṛṣyam
turāyaṇam vratam triṁśataḥ abdān akaravam
hi ca eva dine dine śatam gavām
aṣṭa śatāni ca brāhmaṇebhyaḥ adadam
33. Indeed, I observed the unassailable Turayana vow for thirty years, remaining free from anger. Moreover, day after day, I gave nine hundred cows to the (brahmins).
पयस्विनीनामथ रोहिणीनां तथैव चाप्यनडुहां लोकनाथ ।
प्रादां नित्यं ब्राह्मणेभ्यः सुरेश नेहागतस्तेन फलेन चाहम् ॥३४॥
34. payasvinīnāmatha rohiṇīnāṁ; tathaiva cāpyanaḍuhāṁ lokanātha ,
prādāṁ nityaṁ brāhmaṇebhyaḥ sureśa; nehāgatastena phalena cāham.
34. payasvinīnām atha rohiṇīnām tathā
eva ca api anaḍuhām lokanātha
prādām nityam brāhmaṇebhyaḥ sureśa
na iha āgataḥ tena phalena ca aham
34. lokanātha sureśa aham nityam

ca na iha tena phalena āgataḥ aham
34. O Lord of the world, O Lord of gods, I constantly gave milch cows, and also red cows, and bulls to the (brahmins). Yet, I have not arrived here by the fruit of those [deeds] either.
त्रिंशदग्निमहं ब्रह्मन्नयजं यच्च नित्यदा ।
अष्टाभिः सर्वमेधैश्च नरमेधैश्च सप्तभिः ॥३५॥
35. triṁśadagnimahaṁ brahmannayajaṁ yacca nityadā ,
aṣṭābhiḥ sarvamedhaiśca naramedhaiśca saptabhiḥ.
35. triṃśat agnim aham brahman ayajam yat ca nityadā
aṣṭābhiḥ sarvamedhaiḥ ca naramedhaiḥ ca saptabhiḥ
35. brahman aham triṃśat agnim yat ca nityadā ayajam
aṣṭābhiḥ sarvamedhaiḥ ca saptabhiḥ naramedhaiḥ ca
35. O brahmin, I performed thirty Agni (Vedic rituals) and also regularly performed (other) rituals. (This was accomplished) with eight Sarvamedha (Vedic rituals) and seven Narameaha (Vedic rituals).
दशभिर्विश्वजिद्भिश्च शतैरष्टादशोत्तरैः ।
न चैव तेषां देवेश फलेनाहमिहागतः ॥३६॥
36. daśabhirviśvajidbhiśca śatairaṣṭādaśottaraiḥ ,
na caiva teṣāṁ deveśa phalenāhamihāgataḥ.
36. daśabhiḥ viśvajitbhiḥ ca śataiḥ aṣṭādaśa-uttaraiḥ
na ca eva teṣām deveśa phalena aham iha āgataḥ
36. deveśa aham teṣām phalena iha na ca eva āgataḥ daśabhiḥ
viśvajitbhiḥ ca aṣṭādaśa-uttaraiḥ śataiḥ ca (yajñaiḥ)
36. Along with ten Viśvajit (Vedic rituals) and one hundred eighteen additional (Vedic rituals). Yet, O lord of gods, I have not come here seeking the fruit (phala) of those (actions).
सरय्वां बाहुदायां च गङ्गायामथ नैमिषे ।
गवां शतानामयुतमददं न च तेन वै ॥३७॥
37. sarayvāṁ bāhudāyāṁ ca gaṅgāyāmatha naimiṣe ,
gavāṁ śatānāmayutamadadaṁ na ca tena vai.
37. sarayvām bāhudāyām ca gaṅgāyām atha naimiṣe
gavām śatānām ayutam adadam na ca tena vai
37. sarayvām ca bāhudāyām ca gaṅgāyām atha naimiṣe
gavām śatānām ayutam adadam na ca tena vai
37. On the Sarayu, Bāhudā, and Gaṅgā rivers, and in Naimiṣa, I donated ten thousand hundreds of cows (i.e., a million cows). Yet, I do not seek (any benefit) from that (dāna) either.
इन्द्रेण गुह्यं निहितं वै गुहायां यद्भार्गवस्तपसेहाभ्यविन्दत् ।
जाज्वल्यमानमुशनस्तेजसेह तत्साधयामास महं वरेण्यम् ॥३८॥
38. indreṇa guhyaṁ nihitaṁ vai guhāyāṁ; yadbhārgavastapasehābhyavindat ,
jājvalyamānamuśanastejaseha; tatsādhayāmāsa mahaṁ vareṇyam.

yat bhārgavaḥ tapasā iha abhyavindat
jājakvalyamānam uśanāḥ tejasā
iha tat sādhayāmāsa maham vareṇyam

maham vareṇyam tat iha tejasā sādhayāmāsa
38. That secret (guhyam) which was hidden by Indra in a cave, and which Bhārgava (Uśanā) discovered here through his ascetic practice (tapas) – that very blazing, great, and excellent (power or knowledge), Uśanā accomplished here by his own brilliance (tejas).
ततो मे ब्राह्मणास्तुष्टास्तस्मिन्कर्मणि साधिते ।
सहस्रमृषयश्चासन्ये वै तत्र समागताः ।
उक्तस्तैरस्मि गच्छ त्वं ब्रह्मलोकमिति प्रभो ॥३९॥
39. tato me brāhmaṇāstuṣṭāstasminkarmaṇi sādhite ,
sahasramṛṣayaścāsanye vai tatra samāgatāḥ ,
uktastairasmi gaccha tvaṁ brahmalokamiti prabho.
39. tataḥ me brāhmaṇāḥ tuṣṭāḥ tasmin
karmaṇi sādhite sahasram ṛṣayaḥ ca āsan
ye vai tatra samāgatāḥ uktaḥ taiḥ
asmi gaccha tvam brahmalokam iti prabho
39. prabho tataḥ tasmin karmaṇi sādhite
me brāhmaṇāḥ ca sahasram ṛṣayaḥ ye
vai tatra samāgatāḥ tuṣṭāḥ āsan taiḥ
uktaḥ asmi tvam brahmalokam gaccha iti
39. O Lord, after that ritual (karma) was successfully completed, my Brahmins and the thousand sages who had assembled there were pleased. I was then told by them, 'Go to the realm of Brahmā (brahmaloka).'
प्रीतेनोक्तः सहस्रेण ब्राह्मणानामहं प्रभो ।
इमं लोकमनुप्राप्तो मा भूत्तेऽत्र विचारणा ॥४०॥
40. prītenoktaḥ sahasreṇa brāhmaṇānāmahaṁ prabho ,
imaṁ lokamanuprāpto mā bhūtte'tra vicāraṇā.
40. prītena uktaḥ sahasreṇa brāhmaṇānām aham prabho
imam lokam anuprāptaḥ mā bhūt te atra vicāraṇā
40. prabho aham prītena sahasreṇa brāhmaṇānām uktaḥ
imam lokam anuprāptaḥ atra te vicāraṇā mā bhūt
40. O Lord, the pleased thousand Brahmins told me, 'You have attained this realm; let there be no hesitation or doubt (vicāraṇā) for you regarding this.'
कामं यथावद्विहितं विधात्रा पृष्टेन वाच्यं तु मया यथावत् ।
तपो हि नान्यच्चानशनान्मतं मे नमोऽस्तु ते देववर प्रसीद ॥४१॥
41. kāmaṁ yathāvadvihitaṁ vidhātrā; pṛṣṭena vācyaṁ tu mayā yathāvat ,
tapo hi nānyaccānaśanānmataṁ me; namo'stu te devavara prasīda.
41. kāmam yathāvat vihitam vidhātrā
pṛṣṭena vācyam tu mayā yathāvat
tapaḥ hi na anyat ca anaśanāt matam
me namaḥ astu te devavara prasīda
41. kāmam vidhātrā yathāvat vihitam tu
mayā pṛṣṭena yathāvat vācyam hi
me anaśanāt ca anyat tapaḥ na
matam devavara te namaḥ astu prasīda
41. That which has been properly ordained by the creator (Vidhātā) must be stated precisely by me when questioned. Indeed, I consider no other austerity (tapas) to be superior to fasting. Salutations to you, O best of gods; be gracious!
भीष्म उवाच ।
इत्युक्तवन्तं तं ब्रह्मा राजानं स्म भगीरथम् ।
पूजयामास पूजार्हं विधिदृष्टेन कर्मणा ॥४२॥
42. bhīṣma uvāca ,
ityuktavantaṁ taṁ brahmā rājānaṁ sma bhagīratham ,
pūjayāmāsa pūjārhaṁ vidhidṛṣṭena karmaṇā.

bhagīratham pūjayām āsa pūjārham vidhidṛṣṭena karmaṇā

42. Bhishma said: Brahmā then worshipped King Bhagiratha, who had spoken thus and was worthy of veneration, with rites (karma) performed according to what is prescribed by natural law (dharma).
