विदुर उवाच ।
महाराज विजानीहि यत्त्वां वक्ष्यामि तच्छृणु ।
मुमूर्षोरौषधमिव न रोचेतापि ते श्रुतम् ॥१॥
1. vidura uvāca ,
mahārāja vijānīhi yattvāṁ vakṣyāmi tacchṛṇu ,
mumūrṣorauṣadhamiva na rocetāpi te śrutam.

śṛṇu mumūrṣoḥ auṣadham iva na roceta api te śrutam
1. Vidura said: "O great king, understand well what I shall say to you, and listen to it. Even what you hear will not be pleasing to you, just like medicine is not pleasing to one who desires death."
यद्वै पुरा जातमात्रो रुराव गोमायुवद्विस्वरं पापचेताः ।
दुर्योधनो भारतानां कुलघ्नः सोऽयं युक्तो भविता कालहेतुः ॥२॥
2. yadvai purā jātamātro rurāva; gomāyuvadvisvaraṁ pāpacetāḥ ,
duryodhano bhāratānāṁ kulaghnaḥ; so'yaṁ yukto bhavitā kālahetuḥ.
2. yat vai purā jātamatraḥ rurāva
gomāyuvat visvaram pāpacetāḥ
duryodhanaḥ bhāratānām kulaghnaḥ
saḥ ayam yuktaḥ bhavitā kālahetuḥ
2. Indeed, this very Duryodhana, that evil-minded (pāpacetas) destroyer of the Bharata lineage, who long ago, immediately upon birth, howled with a terrible cry like a jackal - he will certainly be the agent of destruction (kāla-hetu).
गृहे वसन्तं गोमायुं त्वं वै मत्वा न बुध्यसे ।
दुर्योधनस्य रूपेण शृणु काव्यां गिरं मम ॥३॥
3. gṛhe vasantaṁ gomāyuṁ tvaṁ vai matvā na budhyase ,
duryodhanasya rūpeṇa śṛṇu kāvyāṁ giraṁ mama.
3. gṛhe vasantam gomāyum tvam vai matvā na budhyase
duryodhanasya rūpeṇa śṛṇu kāvyām giram mama
3. Indeed, you do not truly comprehend, despite recognizing the jackal dwelling within your house, manifest in the form of Duryodhana. Therefore, listen to my wise counsel (kāvyaṃ giraṃ mama).
मधु वै माध्विको लब्ध्वा प्रपातं नावबुध्यते ।
आरुह्य तं मज्जति वा पतनं वाधिगच्छति ॥४॥
4. madhu vai mādhviko labdhvā prapātaṁ nāvabudhyate ,
āruhya taṁ majjati vā patanaṁ vādhigacchati.
4. madhu vai mādhvikaḥ labdhvā prapātaṃ na avabudhyate
āruhya taṃ majjati vā patanaṃ vā adhigacchati
4. Indeed, a honey-gatherer, having obtained honey, does not perceive the precipice. After climbing it, he either falls into the water or experiences a fall.
सोऽयं मत्तोऽक्षदेवेन मधुवन्न परीक्षते ।
प्रपातं बुध्यते नैव वैरं कृत्वा महारथैः ॥५॥
5. so'yaṁ matto'kṣadevena madhuvanna parīkṣate ,
prapātaṁ budhyate naiva vairaṁ kṛtvā mahārathaiḥ.
5. saḥ ayaṃ mattaḥ akṣadevena madhuvat na parīkṣate
prapātaṃ budhyate na eva vairaṃ kṛtvā mahārathaiḥ
5. This person, intoxicated by gambling, does not assess the situation like a honey-gatherer. He certainly does not perceive the precipice, having created enmity with great warriors.
विदितं ते महाराज राजस्वेवासमञ्जसम् ।
अन्धका यादवा भोजाः समेताः कंसमत्यजन् ॥६॥
6. viditaṁ te mahārāja rājasvevāsamañjasam ,
andhakā yādavā bhojāḥ sametāḥ kaṁsamatyajan.
6. viditaṃ te mahārāja rājasu eva asamañjasam
andhakāḥ yādavāḥ bhojāḥ sametāḥ kaṃsam atyajan
6. It is known to you, O great king, how inappropriate the situation was among the kings. The Andhakas, Yadavas, and Bhojas, having gathered, abandoned Kaṃsa.
नियोगाच्च हते तस्मिन्कृष्णेनामित्रघातिना ।
एवं ते ज्ञातयः सर्वे मोदमानाः शतं समाः ॥७॥
7. niyogācca hate tasminkṛṣṇenāmitraghātinā ,
evaṁ te jñātayaḥ sarve modamānāḥ śataṁ samāḥ.
7. niyogāt ca hate tasmin kṛṣṇena amitraghātinā
evaṃ te jñātayaḥ sarve modamānāḥ śataṃ samāḥ
7. And by divine decree, when he (Kaṃsa) was slain by Kṛṣṇa, the destroyer of foes, all those kinsmen thus rejoiced for a hundred years.
त्वन्नियुक्तः सव्यसाची निगृह्णातु सुयोधनम् ।
निग्रहादस्य पापस्य मोदन्तां कुरवः सुखम् ॥८॥
8. tvanniyuktaḥ savyasācī nigṛhṇātu suyodhanam ,
nigrahādasya pāpasya modantāṁ kuravaḥ sukham.
8. tvanniyuktaḥ savyasācī nigṛhṇātu suyodhanam
nigrahāt asya pāpasya modantām kuravaḥ sukham
8. Arjuna (savyasācī), appointed by you, should subdue Suyodhana. By the vanquishing of this wicked person, may the Kurus rejoice in happiness.
काकेनेमांश्चित्रबर्हाञ्शार्दूलान्क्रोष्टुकेन च ।
क्रीणीष्व पाण्डवान्राजन्मा मज्जीः शोकसागरे ॥९॥
9. kākenemāṁścitrabarhāñśārdūlānkroṣṭukena ca ,
krīṇīṣva pāṇḍavānrājanmā majjīḥ śokasāgare.
9. kākena imān citrabarhān śārdūlān kroṣṭukena ca
krīṇīṣva pāṇḍavān rājan mā majjīḥ śokasāgare
9. O King, do not try to purchase these beautifully feathered peacocks (citrabarhān) and tigers (śārdūlān) with a crow and a jackal. Do not abandon the Pandavas and thereby plunge into an ocean of sorrow (śokasāgare).
त्यजेत्कुलार्थे पुरुषं ग्रामस्यार्थे कुलं त्यजेत् ।
ग्रामं जनपदस्यार्थे आत्मार्थे पृथिवीं त्यजेत् ॥१०॥
10. tyajetkulārthe puruṣaṁ grāmasyārthe kulaṁ tyajet ,
grāmaṁ janapadasyārthe ātmārthe pṛthivīṁ tyajet.
10. tyajet kulārthe puruṣam grāmasya arthe kulam tyajet
grāmam janapadasya arthe ātman arthe pṛthivīm tyajet
10. One should sacrifice an individual (puruṣa) for the sake of the family. One should abandon the family for the sake of the village. One should give up the village for the sake of the district. For the sake of the self (ātman), one should renounce the entire world.
सर्वज्ञः सर्वभावज्ञः सर्वशत्रुभयंकरः ।
इति स्म भाषते काव्यो जम्भत्यागे महासुरान् ॥११॥
11. sarvajñaḥ sarvabhāvajñaḥ sarvaśatrubhayaṁkaraḥ ,
iti sma bhāṣate kāvyo jambhatyāge mahāsurān.
11. sarvajñaḥ sarvabhāvajñaḥ sarvaśatrubhayaṁkaraḥ
iti sma bhāṣate kāvyaḥ jambhatyāge mahāsurān
11. Kāvya (Śukra), who is omniscient (sarvajña), cognizant of all beings' intrinsic natures, and a terror to all enemies, thus spoke to the great Asuras concerning the defeat of Jambha.
हिरण्यष्ठीविनः कश्चित्पक्षिणो वनगोचरान् ।
गृहे किल कृतावासाँल्लोभाद्राजन्नपीडयत् ॥१२॥
12. hiraṇyaṣṭhīvinaḥ kaścitpakṣiṇo vanagocarān ,
gṛhe kila kṛtāvāsāँllobhādrājannapīḍayat.
12. hiraṇyaṣṭhīvinaḥ kaścit pakṣiṇaḥ vanagocarān
gṛhe kila kṛtāvāsān lobhāt rājan apīḍayat
12. O king, it is said that a certain greedy man oppressed some gold-spitting birds that frequented the forest but had made their dwelling in his house.
सदोपभोज्याँल्लोभान्धो हिरण्यार्थे परंतप ।
आयतिं च तदात्वं च उभे सद्यो व्यनाशयत् ॥१३॥
13. sadopabhojyāँllobhāndho hiraṇyārthe paraṁtapa ,
āyatiṁ ca tadātvaṁ ca ubhe sadyo vyanāśayat.
13. sadopabhojyān lobhāndhaḥ hiraṇyārthe paraṃtapa
āyatim ca tadātvam ca ubhe sadyaḥ vyanāśayat
13. O tormentor of foes (paraṃtapa), blinded by greed for gold, that man instantly destroyed both his present prosperity and future prospects, which were perpetually available for his enjoyment.
तदात्वकामः पाण्डूंस्त्वं मा द्रुहो भरतर्षभ ।
मोहात्मा तप्यसे पश्चात्पक्षिहा पुरुषो यथा ॥१४॥
14. tadātvakāmaḥ pāṇḍūṁstvaṁ mā druho bharatarṣabha ,
mohātmā tapyase paścātpakṣihā puruṣo yathā.
14. tadātvakāmaḥ pāṇḍūn tvam mā druhaḥ bharatarṣabha
mohātmā tapyase paścāt pakṣihā puruṣaḥ yathā
14. O best of Bharatas (bharatarṣabha), you, being desirous of immediate results (tadātvakāma), must not harm the Pāṇḍavas. Otherwise, with a deluded mind (mohātmā), you will suffer later, just like that man who killed the birds.
जातं जातं पाण्डवेभ्यः पुष्पमादत्स्व भारत ।
मालाकार इवारामे स्नेहं कुर्वन्पुनः पुनः ॥१५॥
15. jātaṁ jātaṁ pāṇḍavebhyaḥ puṣpamādatsva bhārata ,
mālākāra ivārāme snehaṁ kurvanpunaḥ punaḥ.
15. jātam jātam pāṇḍavebhyaḥ puṣpam ādatva bhārata
mālākāraḥ iva ārāme sneham kurvan punaḥ punaḥ
15. O Bhārata, take from the Pāṇḍavas each blossom as it appears, just as a gardener in a garden repeatedly gathers flowers while cultivating them with care and affection.
वृक्षानङ्गारकारीव मैनान्धाक्षीः समूलकान् ।
मा गमः ससुतामात्यः सबलश्च पराभवम् ॥१६॥
16. vṛkṣānaṅgārakārīva maināndhākṣīḥ samūlakān ,
mā gamaḥ sasutāmātyaḥ sabalaśca parābhavam.
16. vṛkṣān aṅgārakārī iva mā enān dhākṣīḥ samūlakān
mā gamaḥ sasutāmātyaḥ sabalaḥ ca parābhavam
16. Like a charcoal burner, do not burn them (your kinsmen) with their roots. Do not yourself go to ruin, along with your sons, ministers, and army.
समवेतान्हि कः पार्थान्प्रतियुध्येत भारत ।
मरुद्भिः सहितो राजन्नपि साक्षान्मरुत्पतिः ॥१७॥
17. samavetānhi kaḥ pārthānpratiyudhyeta bhārata ,
marudbhiḥ sahito rājannapi sākṣānmarutpatiḥ.
17. samavetān hi kaḥ pārthān pratiyudhyeta bhārata
marudbhiḥ sahitaḥ rājan api sākṣāt marutpatiḥ
17. Indeed, O Bhārata, who would fight against the united Pārthas (the Pāṇḍavas)? O King, not even Indra (Marutpati), accompanied directly by the Maruts (storm gods), could do so.
