Sañjaya said: When the Pāṇḍavas saw Droṇa thus striking down cavalry, charioteers, chariots, and elephants, they were distressed and did not surround him.

O King, those other kings and followers of the Pandavas performed numerous deeds (karma), each befitting their lineage and valor.

Having witnessed that army being assembled by the Pandavas in battle, Drona (Bhāradvāja), with eyes turned away in anger, observed them.

He, Drona, fierce and intoxicated with battle in his chariot, taking on intense anger, dispersed the Pandava army just as the wind (sadāgati) scatters clouds.

Seeing him, who, self-controlled (yatavrata), advanced like an enraged Death (Antaka), the Pāṇḍava warriors fled in all directions.

Amidst those who were fleeing, those who were turning back, those who were looking on, and those who were standing still, there arose a most terrifying and dreadful sound from them.

That [sound/form], causing joy to the brave and increasing fear for the timid, completely filled the space between heaven and earth.

Then, Drona, again proclaiming his name in battle, made himself (ātman) fearsome, scattering hundreds of arrows upon his enemies.

Thus, that powerful Drona, though aged, acting like a youth, slew those armies of the intelligent son of Pandu (Yudhishthira) just as Time (kāla) itself would.

And the fierce great warrior, having cut off heads and arms with their ornaments and having made the chariot platforms empty, roared aloud.

Due to the roar of Drona's chariot, the twanging of his bowstring, and the sound of his bow, a great noise arose in the sky.

Then, his arrows, numerous and issuing forth in thousands, covered all directions and fell upon the elephants, horses, chariots, and infantry.

O King of Kurus, the great soul (mahātman) Droṇa, having performed these and other deeds in battle, departed from here to heaven, scorching the worlds like the sun at the end of an eon.

Resounding through the heavens, earth, atmosphere, the main and intermediate directions, and the waters, a great cry of 'Alas, shame!' arose from all beings.
