संजय उवाच ।
तथा परुषितं दृष्ट्वा सूतपुत्रेण मातुलम् ।
खड्गमुद्यम्य वेगेन द्रौणिरभ्यपतद्द्रुतम् ॥१॥

1. Sanjaya said: Seeing his maternal uncle thus insulted by Karna (the son of the charioteer), Ashvatthama (Drauni) quickly rushed forward with speed, raising his sword.
अश्वत्थामोवाच ।
कर्ण पश्य सुदुर्बुद्धे तिष्ठेदानीं नराधम ।
एष तेऽद्य शिरः कायादुद्धरामि सुदुर्मते ॥२॥
2. aśvatthāmovāca ,
karṇa paśya sudurbuddhe tiṣṭhedānīṁ narādhama ,
eṣa te'dya śiraḥ kāyāduddharāmi sudurmate.

2. Ashvatthama said: O Karna, you extremely wicked-minded one, look! Stop now, you lowest among men! Today, I will sever your head from your body, you utterly evil-minded one!
संजय उवाच ।
तमुत्पतन्तं वेगेन राजा दुर्योधनः स्वयम् ।
न्यवारयन्महाराज कृपश्च द्विपदां वरः ॥३॥
3. saṁjaya uvāca ,
tamutpatantaṁ vegena rājā duryodhanaḥ svayam ,
nyavārayanmahārāja kṛpaśca dvipadāṁ varaḥ.

3. Sanjaya said: O great king, King Duryodhana himself and Kripa, the foremost among men, restrained him (Ashvatthama) as he rushed forward with great speed.
कर्ण उवाच ।
शूरोऽयं समरश्लाघी दुर्मतिश्च द्विजाधमः ।
आसादयतु मद्वीर्यं मुञ्चेमं कुरुसत्तम ॥४॥
4. karṇa uvāca ,
śūro'yaṁ samaraślāghī durmatiśca dvijādhamaḥ ,
āsādayatu madvīryaṁ muñcemaṁ kurusattama.

4. Karna said: This man is a hero who boasts in battle, yet he is evil-minded and the lowest of the twice-born (brahmins)! Let him face my valor! O best of the Kurus (Duryodhana), release him!
अश्वत्थामोवाच ।
तवैतत्क्षम्यतेऽस्माभिः सूतात्मज सुदुर्मते ।
दर्पमुत्सिक्तमेतत्ते फल्गुनो नाशयिष्यति ॥५॥
5. aśvatthāmovāca ,
tavaitatkṣamyate'smābhiḥ sūtātmaja sudurmate ,
darpamutsiktametatte phalguno nāśayiṣyati.

5. Aśvatthāmā said: "O son of a charioteer, you who are exceedingly evil-minded, this behavior of yours is tolerated by us for now, but Arjuna will surely destroy this inflated pride of yours."
दुर्योधन उवाच ।
अश्वत्थामन्प्रसीदस्व क्षन्तुमर्हसि मानद ।
कोपः खलु न कर्तव्यः सूतपुत्रे कथंचन ॥६॥
6. duryodhana uvāca ,
aśvatthāmanprasīdasva kṣantumarhasi mānada ,
kopaḥ khalu na kartavyaḥ sūtaputre kathaṁcana.

6. Duryodhana said: "O Aśvatthāmā, please be gracious! O giver of honor, you ought to forgive. Indeed, anger should not be shown towards the son of a charioteer under any circumstances."
त्वयि कर्णे कृपे द्रोणे मद्रराजेऽथ सौबले ।
महत्कार्यं समायत्तं प्रसीद द्विजसत्तम ॥७॥
7. tvayi karṇe kṛpe droṇe madrarāje'tha saubale ,
mahatkāryaṁ samāyattaṁ prasīda dvijasattama.

7. "A great task and responsibility rests upon you, upon Karṇa, Kṛpa, Droṇa, upon the king of Madras (Śalya), and upon Saubala (Śakuni). Please be gracious, O best among the twice-born (dvija)!"
एते ह्यभिमुखाः सर्वे राधेयेन युयुत्सवः ।
आयान्ति पाण्डवा ब्रह्मन्नाह्वयन्तः समन्ततः ॥८॥
8. ete hyabhimukhāḥ sarve rādheyena yuyutsavaḥ ,
āyānti pāṇḍavā brahmannāhvayantaḥ samantataḥ.
8. ete hi abhimukhāḥ sarve Rādheyena yuyutsavaḥ
āyānti Pāṇḍavāḥ brahman āhvayantaḥ samantataḥ

8. "Indeed, O Brahmin, all these Pāṇḍavas, facing us and eager to fight with Rādheya (Karṇa), are approaching, challenging us from all directions."
संजय उवाच ।
कर्णोऽपि रथिनां श्रेष्ठश्चापमुद्यम्य वीर्यवान् ।
कौरवाग्र्यैः परिवृतः शक्रो देवगणैरिव ।
पर्यतिष्ठत तेजस्वी स्वबाहुबलमाश्रितः ॥९॥
9. saṁjaya uvāca ,
karṇo'pi rathināṁ śreṣṭhaścāpamudyamya vīryavān ,
kauravāgryaiḥ parivṛtaḥ śakro devagaṇairiva ,
paryatiṣṭhata tejasvī svabāhubalamāśritaḥ.

cāpam udyamya vīryavān kauravāgryaiḥ
parivṛtaḥ śakraḥ devagaṇaiḥ iva

9. Saṃjaya uvāca Karṇa api vīryavān rathinām
śreṣṭhaḥ cāpam udyamya tejasvī
svabāhubalam āśritaḥ kauravāgryaiḥ parivṛtaḥ
śakraḥ devagaṇaiḥ iva paryatiṣṭhata
9. Saṃjaya said: The valorous Karṇa, foremost among charioteers, took up his bow. Radiant and relying on the strength of his own arms, he stood firm, surrounded by the chief Kauravas, just as Indra (Śakra) is encircled by hosts of gods.
ततः प्रववृते युद्धं कर्णस्य सह पाण्डवैः ।
संरब्धस्य महाराज सिंहनादविनादितम् ॥१०॥
10. tataḥ pravavṛte yuddhaṁ karṇasya saha pāṇḍavaiḥ ,
saṁrabdhasya mahārāja siṁhanādavināditam.
10. tataḥ pravavṛte yuddham karṇasya saha pāṇḍavaiḥ
saṃrabdhasya mahārāja siṃhanādavināditam
10. mahārāja tataḥ karṇasya saṃrabdhasya pāṇḍavaiḥ

10. O great king, then the battle commenced between Karṇa and the Pāṇḍavas, with Karṇa greatly enraged, and the conflict reverberated with the roars of lions.
ततस्ते पाण्डवा राजन्पाञ्चालाश्च यशस्विनः ।
दृष्ट्वा कर्णं महाबाहुमुच्चैः शब्दमथानदन् ॥११॥
11. tataste pāṇḍavā rājanpāñcālāśca yaśasvinaḥ ,
dṛṣṭvā karṇaṁ mahābāhumuccaiḥ śabdamathānadan.
11. tataḥ te pāṇḍavāḥ rājan pāñcālāḥ ca yaśasvinaḥ
dṛṣṭvā karṇam mahābāhum uccaiḥ śabdam atha anadan
11. rājan tataḥ te yaśasvinaḥ pāṇḍavāḥ ca pāñcālāḥ
mahābāhum karṇam dṛṣṭvā atha uccaiḥ śabdam anadan
11. O King, then those renowned Pāṇḍavas and Pañcālas, upon seeing the mighty-armed Karṇa, subsequently roared with a loud sound.
अयं कर्णः कुतः कर्णस्तिष्ठ कर्ण महारणे ।
युध्यस्व सहितोऽस्माभिर्दुरात्मन्पुरुषाधम ॥१२॥
12. ayaṁ karṇaḥ kutaḥ karṇastiṣṭha karṇa mahāraṇe ,
yudhyasva sahito'smābhirdurātmanpuruṣādhama.
12. ayam karṇaḥ kutaḥ karṇaḥ tiṣṭha karṇa mahāraṇe
yudhyasva sahitaḥ asmābhiḥ durātman puruṣādhama
12. ayam karṇaḥ kutaḥ karṇaḥ durātman puruṣādhama
karṇa mahāraṇe tiṣṭha asmābhiḥ sahitaḥ yudhyasva
12. "Here is Karṇa! Where is Karṇa (really)? Karṇa, stand firm in this great battle! Fight against us, O wicked soul, O lowest of men!"
अन्ये तु दृष्ट्वा राधेयं क्रोधरक्तेक्षणाब्रुवन् ।
हन्यतामयमुत्सिक्तः सूतपुत्रोऽल्पचेतनः ॥१३॥
13. anye tu dṛṣṭvā rādheyaṁ krodharaktekṣaṇābruvan ,
hanyatāmayamutsiktaḥ sūtaputro'lpacetanaḥ.
13. anye tu dṛṣṭvā rādheyaṁ krodharaktekṣaṇāḥ abruvan
hanyatām ayam utsiktah sūtaputraḥ alpacetanaḥ
13. तु क्रोधरक्तेक्षणाः अन्ये राधेयं दृष्ट्वा अब्रुवन्
अयम् उत्सिक्तः अल्पचेतनः सूतपुत्रः हन्यताम्
13. But others, seeing the son of Rādhā (Rādheya) with eyes reddened by fury, exclaimed: "Let this arrogant, dull-witted son of a charioteer be killed!"
सर्वैः पार्थिवशार्दूलैर्नानेनार्थोऽस्ति जीवता ।
अत्यन्तवैरी पार्थानां सततं पापपूरुषः ॥१४॥
14. sarvaiḥ pārthivaśārdūlairnānenārtho'sti jīvatā ,
atyantavairī pārthānāṁ satataṁ pāpapūruṣaḥ.
14. sarvaiḥ pārthivaśārdūlaiḥ na anena arthaḥ asti
jīvatā atyantavairī pārthānām satatam pāpapūruṣaḥ
14. सर्वैः पार्थिवशार्दूलैः (उक्तम्) अनेन जीवता अर्थः न
अस्ति (यतः) अयम् पार्थानाम् अत्यन्तवैरी सततं पापपूरुषः
14. All these tiger-like kings declared: "There is no purpose in keeping this one alive, for he is the constant and bitter enemy of the Pārthas and a sinful man."
एष मूलं ह्यनर्थानां दुर्योधनमते स्थितः ।
हतैनमिति जल्पन्तः क्षत्रियाः समुपाद्रवन् ॥१५॥
15. eṣa mūlaṁ hyanarthānāṁ duryodhanamate sthitaḥ ,
hatainamiti jalpantaḥ kṣatriyāḥ samupādravan.
15. eṣaḥ mūlam hi anarthānām duryodhanamate sthitaḥ
hata enam iti jalpantaḥ kṣatriyāḥ samupādravan
15. हि एषः दुर्योधनमते स्थितः अनर्थानाम् मूलम्
हत एनम् इति जल्पन्तः क्षत्रियाः समुपाद्रवन्
15. Indeed, this one is the root of all misfortunes, unwavering in Duryodhana's counsel. Exclaiming, 'Kill him!', the Kṣatriyas charged.
महता शरवर्षेण छादयन्तो महारथाः ।
वधार्थं सूतपुत्रस्य पाण्डवेयेन चोदिताः ॥१६॥
16. mahatā śaravarṣeṇa chādayanto mahārathāḥ ,
vadhārthaṁ sūtaputrasya pāṇḍaveyena coditāḥ.
16. mahatā śaravarṣeṇa chādayantaḥ mahārathāḥ
vadhārtham sūtaputrasya pāṇḍaveyena coditāḥ
16. पाण्डवेयेन चोदिताः महारथाः महता शरवर्षेण
सूतपुत्रस्य वधार्थम् छादयन्तः (आद्रवन्)
16. The great chariot-warriors (maharathas), spurred on by the Pāṇḍava, overwhelmed the son of the charioteer (Sūtaputra) with a massive volley of arrows, intent on his destruction.
तांस्तु सर्वांस्तथा दृष्ट्वा धावमानान्महारथान् ।
न विव्यथे सूतपुत्रो न च त्रासमगच्छत ॥१७॥
17. tāṁstu sarvāṁstathā dṛṣṭvā dhāvamānānmahārathān ,
na vivyathe sūtaputro na ca trāsamagacchata.
17. tān tu sarvān tathā dṛṣṭvā dhāvamānān mahārathān
na vivyathe sūtaputraḥ na ca trāsam agacchata
17. sūtaputraḥ tān sarvān mahārathān tathā dhāvamānān

17. Having seen all those great chariot-fighters (mahārathas) thus rushing, the son of the charioteer (Karṇa) was neither perturbed nor did he feel any fear.
दृष्ट्वा नगरकल्पं तमुद्धूतं सैन्यसागरम् ।
पिप्रीषुस्तव पुत्राणां संग्रामेष्वपराजितः ॥१८॥
18. dṛṣṭvā nagarakalpaṁ tamuddhūtaṁ sainyasāgaram ,
piprīṣustava putrāṇāṁ saṁgrāmeṣvaparājitaḥ.
18. dṛṣṭvā nagarakalpam tam uddhūtam sainyasāgaram
piprīṣuḥ tava putrāṇām saṅgrāmeṣu aparājitaḥ

18. Having seen that ocean-like army, agitated and vast as a city, he (Karṇa), who was desirous of pleasing your sons and unconquered in battles,...
सायकौघेन बलवान्क्षिप्रकारी महाबलः ।
वारयामास तत्सैन्यं समन्ताद्भरतर्षभ ॥१९॥
19. sāyakaughena balavānkṣiprakārī mahābalaḥ ,
vārayāmāsa tatsainyaṁ samantādbharatarṣabha.
19. sāyakaughena balavān kṣiprakārī mahābalaḥ
vārayāmāsa tat sainyam samantāt bharatarṣabha
19. bharatarṣabha,
balavān kṣiprakārī mahābalaḥ sāyakaughena tat sainyam samantāt vārayāmāsa
19. O best of the Bharatas, that powerful, swift-acting, and mighty (Karṇa) repelled that army from all directions with a multitude of arrows.
ततस्तु शरवर्षेण पार्थिवास्तमवारयन् ।
धनूंषि ते विधुन्वानाः शतशोऽथ सहस्रशः ।
अयोधयन्त राधेयं शक्रं दैत्यगणा इव ॥२०॥
20. tatastu śaravarṣeṇa pārthivāstamavārayan ,
dhanūṁṣi te vidhunvānāḥ śataśo'tha sahasraśaḥ ,
ayodhayanta rādheyaṁ śakraṁ daityagaṇā iva.
20. tatas tu śaravarṣeṇa pārthivāḥ tam
avārayan dhanūṃṣi te vidhunvānāḥ
śataśaḥ atha sahasraśaḥ ayodhayanta
rādheyam śakram daityagaṇāḥ iva
20. tatas tu te pārthivāḥ śataśaḥ atha
sahasraśaḥ dhanūṃṣi vidhunvānāḥ
śaravarṣeṇa tam avārayan; daityagaṇāḥ
śakram iva rādheyam ayodhayanta
20. Then, indeed, the kings, by hundreds and by thousands, shaking their bows, obstructed him (Karṇa) with a shower of arrows. They fought Karṇa (Rādheya) just as hosts of demons fight Indra (Śakra).
शरवर्षं तु तत्कर्णः पार्थिवैः समुदीरितम् ।
शरवर्षेण महता समन्ताद्व्यकिरत्प्रभो ॥२१॥
21. śaravarṣaṁ tu tatkarṇaḥ pārthivaiḥ samudīritam ,
śaravarṣeṇa mahatā samantādvyakiratprabho.
21. śaravarṣam tu tat karṇaḥ pārthivaiḥ sam-udīritam
| śaravarṣeṇa mahatā samantāt vy-akirat prabho
21. prabho,
karṇaḥ tu tat pārthivaiḥ sam-udīritam śaravarṣam mahatā śaravarṣeṇa samantāt vy-akirat
21. O lord, Karṇa, however, scattered that shower of arrows that had been unleashed by the kings, countering it with his own great shower of arrows from all sides.
तद्युद्धमभवत्तेषां कृतप्रतिकृतैषिणाम् ।
यथा देवासुरे युद्धे शक्रस्य सह दानवैः ॥२२॥
22. tadyuddhamabhavatteṣāṁ kṛtapratikṛtaiṣiṇām ,
yathā devāsure yuddhe śakrasya saha dānavaiḥ.
22. tat yuddham abhavat teṣām kṛta-pratikṛta-eṣinām
| yathā deva-asure yuddhe śakrasya saha dānavaiḥ
22. teṣām kṛta-pratikṛta-eṣinām tat yuddham abhavat yathā
deva-asure yuddhe śakrasya dānavaiḥ saha (abhavat)
22. That battle, between those who desired mutual action and retaliation, became like the conflict between the gods (devas) and asuras, specifically Indra's battle with the Dānavas.
तत्राद्भुतमपश्याम सूतपुत्रस्य लाघवम् ।
यदेनं समरे यत्ता नाप्नुवन्त परे युधि ॥२३॥
23. tatrādbhutamapaśyāma sūtaputrasya lāghavam ,
yadenaṁ samare yattā nāpnuvanta pare yudhi.
23. tatra adbhutam apaśyāma sūtaputrasya lāghavam
| yat enam samare yattā na āpnuvanta pare yudhi
23. tatra sūtaputrasya adbhutam lāghavam apaśyāma
yat samare yattā pare enam yudhi na āpnuvanta
23. There we witnessed the extraordinary agility of Karṇa (Sūtaputra), for despite being alert in battle, his enemies could not reach him in the fight.
निवार्य च शरौघांस्तान्पार्थिवानां महारथः ।
युगेष्वीषासु छत्रेषु ध्वजेषु च हयेषु च ।
आत्मनामाङ्कितान्बाणान्राधेयः प्राहिणोच्छितान् ॥२४॥
24. nivārya ca śaraughāṁstānpārthivānāṁ mahārathaḥ ,
yugeṣvīṣāsu chatreṣu dhvajeṣu ca hayeṣu ca ,
ātmanāmāṅkitānbāṇānrādheyaḥ prāhiṇocchitān.
24. nivārya ca śaraughān tān pārthivānām
mahārathaḥ | yugeṣu īṣāsu chatreṣu
dhvajeṣu ca hayeṣu ca | ātma-nāma-aṅkitān
bāṇān rādheyaḥ prāhiṇot śritān
24. ca mahārathaḥ rādheyaḥ tān pārthivānām śaraughān nivārya,
ātma-nāma-aṅkitān śritān bāṇān yugeṣu īṣāsu chatreṣu ca hayeṣu ca dhvajeṣu prāhiṇot
24. And the great charioteer (maharatha) Karṇa (Rādheya), having repelled those showers of arrows from the kings, discharged sharpened arrows, each marked with his own name, into their yokes, chariot poles, umbrellas, banners, and horses.
ततस्ते व्याकुलीभूता राजानः कर्णपीडिताः ।
बभ्रमुस्तत्र तत्रैव गावः शीतार्दिता इव ॥२५॥
25. tataste vyākulībhūtā rājānaḥ karṇapīḍitāḥ ,
babhramustatra tatraiva gāvaḥ śītārditā iva.
25. tataḥ te vyākulībhūtāḥ rājānaḥ karṇapīḍitāḥ
babhramuḥ tatra tatra eva gāvaḥ śītārditāḥ iva
25. tataḥ karṇapīḍitāḥ te rājānaḥ vyākulībhūtāḥ
babhramuḥ tatra tatra eva gāvaḥ śītārditāḥ iva
25. Then, afflicted by Karṇa, those kings became distraught and wandered aimlessly, just like cows suffering from the cold.
हयानां वध्यमानानां गजानां रथिनां तथा ।
तत्र तत्राभ्यवेक्षामः संघान्कर्णेन पातितान् ॥२६॥
26. hayānāṁ vadhyamānānāṁ gajānāṁ rathināṁ tathā ,
tatra tatrābhyavekṣāmaḥ saṁghānkarṇena pātitān.
26. hayānām vadhyamānānām gajānām rathinām tathā
tatra tatra abhyavekṣāmaḥ saṅghān karṇena pātitān
26. tathā hayānām vadhyamānānām gajānām rathinām

26. We observed groups of horses, elephants, and charioteers, who were being struck down by Karṇa, lying here and there on the battlefield.
शिरोभिः पतितै राजन्बाहुभिश्च समन्ततः ।
आस्तीर्णा वसुधा सर्वा शूराणामनिवर्तिनाम् ॥२७॥
27. śirobhiḥ patitai rājanbāhubhiśca samantataḥ ,
āstīrṇā vasudhā sarvā śūrāṇāmanivartinām.
27. śirobhiḥ patitaiḥ rājan bāhubhiḥ ca samantataḥ
āstīrṇā vasudhā sarvā śūrāṇām anivartinām
27. rājan,

27. O King, the entire earth was covered everywhere with the fallen heads and arms of unretreating heroes.
हतैश्च हन्यमानैश्च निष्टनद्भिश्च सर्वशः ।
बभूवायोधनं रौद्रं वैवस्वतपुरोपमम् ॥२८॥
28. hataiśca hanyamānaiśca niṣṭanadbhiśca sarvaśaḥ ,
babhūvāyodhanaṁ raudraṁ vaivasvatapuropamam.

28. The fierce battlefield became dreadful, resembling the city of Yama (Vaivasvata), with dead, dying, and groaning warriors scattered everywhere.
ततो दुर्योधनो राजा दृष्ट्वा कर्णस्य विक्रमम् ।
अश्वत्थामानमासाद्य तदा वाक्यमुवाच ह ॥२९॥
29. tato duryodhano rājā dṛṣṭvā karṇasya vikramam ,
aśvatthāmānamāsādya tadā vākyamuvāca ha.

29. Then King Duryodhana, seeing Karna's valor, approached Aśvatthāmā and spoke these words.
युध्यतेऽसौ रणे कर्णो दंशितः सर्वपार्थिवैः ।
पश्यैतां द्रवतीं सेनां कर्णसायकपीडिताम् ।
कार्त्तिकेयेन विध्वस्तामासुरीं पृतनामिव ॥३०॥
30. yudhyate'sau raṇe karṇo daṁśitaḥ sarvapārthivaiḥ ,
paśyaitāṁ dravatīṁ senāṁ karṇasāyakapīḍitām ,
kārttikeyena vidhvastāmāsurīṁ pṛtanāmiva.
30. yudhyate asau raṇe karṇaḥ daṃśitaḥ
sarvapārthivaiḥ paśya etām dravatīm

30. That Karna, who is protected by all the kings, is fighting in battle. Look at this fleeing army, suffering from Karna's arrows, just like the Asura army destroyed by Kārttikeya.
दृष्ट्वैतां निर्जितां सेनां रणे कर्णेन धीमता ।
अभियात्येष बीभत्सुः सूतपुत्रजिघांसया ॥३१॥
31. dṛṣṭvaitāṁ nirjitāṁ senāṁ raṇe karṇena dhīmatā ,
abhiyātyeṣa bībhatsuḥ sūtaputrajighāṁsayā.

abhiyāti eṣa bībhatsuḥ sūtaputrajighāṃsayā

31. Seeing this army vanquished in battle by the intelligent Karna, this Bibhatsu (Arjuna) is advancing with the intention to kill the son of Sūta (Karna).
तद्यथा पश्यमानानां सूतपुत्रं महारथम् ।
न हन्यात्पाण्डवः संख्ये तथा नीतिर्विधीयताम् ॥३२॥
32. tadyathā paśyamānānāṁ sūtaputraṁ mahāratham ,
na hanyātpāṇḍavaḥ saṁkhye tathā nītirvidhīyatām.

hanyāt pāṇḍavaḥ saṃkhye tathā nītiḥ vidhīyatām

32. Therefore, so that the Pāṇḍava (Arjuna) may not kill the great charioteer, the son of Sūta (Karna), while we are watching in battle, let such a plan (nīti) be devised.
ततो द्रौणिः कृपः शल्यो हार्दिक्यश्च महारथः ।
प्रत्युद्ययुस्तदा पार्थं सूतपुत्रपरीप्सया ॥३३॥
33. tato drauṇiḥ kṛpaḥ śalyo hārdikyaśca mahārathaḥ ,
pratyudyayustadā pārthaṁ sūtaputraparīpsayā.

33. Then, Droṇa's son (Drauṇi), Kṛpa, Śalya, and Hārdikya, all great chariot warriors, advanced against Arjuna (Pārtha) at that moment, intending to protect Karṇa (the son of Sūta).
आयान्तं दृश्य कौन्तेयं वृत्रं देवचमूमिव ।
प्रत्युद्ययौ तदा कर्णो यथा शक्रः प्रतापवान् ॥३४॥
34. āyāntaṁ dṛśya kaunteyaṁ vṛtraṁ devacamūmiva ,
pratyudyayau tadā karṇo yathā śakraḥ pratāpavān.

34. Having seen Arjuna (Kaunteya) approaching, as Vṛtra approached the army of the gods, then Karṇa, mighty and glorious (pratāpavān), advanced to meet him, just as Indra would.
धृतराष्ट्र उवाच ।
संरब्धं फल्गुनं दृष्ट्वा कालान्तकयमोपमम् ।
कर्णो वैकर्तनः सूत प्रत्यपद्यत्किमुत्तरम् ॥३५॥
35. dhṛtarāṣṭra uvāca ,
saṁrabdhaṁ phalgunaṁ dṛṣṭvā kālāntakayamopamam ,
karṇo vaikartanaḥ sūta pratyapadyatkimuttaram.

35. Dhṛtarāṣṭra said: "O Sanjaya (Sūta), when Karṇa (Vaikartana) saw Arjuna (Phalguna) enraged and resembling Yama, the terminator of time, what response did he then offer?"
स ह्यस्पर्धत पार्थेन नित्यमेव महारथः ।
आशंसते च बीभत्सुं युद्धे जेतुं सुदारुणे ॥३६॥
36. sa hyaspardhata pārthena nityameva mahārathaḥ ,
āśaṁsate ca bībhatsuṁ yuddhe jetuṁ sudāruṇe.
36. saḥ hi aspardhata pārthena nityam eva mahārathaḥ
āśaṃsate ca bībhatsum yuddhe jetum sudāruṇe

36. Indeed, that great chariot warrior Karṇa always competed with Arjuna (Pārtha). And he hoped to conquer Arjuna (Bībhatsu) in a very dreadful (sudāruṇa) battle.
स तु तं सहसा प्राप्तं नित्यमत्यन्तवैरिणम् ।
कर्णो वैकर्तनः सूत किमुत्तरमपद्यत ॥३७॥
37. sa tu taṁ sahasā prāptaṁ nityamatyantavairiṇam ,
karṇo vaikartanaḥ sūta kimuttaramapadyata.

37. O charioteer, what response did Karna, the son of Vivasvan (Vaikartana), make when that perpetual, ultimate enemy (Arjuna) suddenly arrived?
संजय उवाच ।
आयान्तं पाण्डवं दृष्ट्वा गजः प्रतिगजं यथा ।
असंभ्रान्ततरः कर्णः पर्त्युदीयाद्धनंजयम् ॥३८॥
38. saṁjaya uvāca ,
āyāntaṁ pāṇḍavaṁ dṛṣṭvā gajaḥ pratigajaṁ yathā ,
asaṁbhrāntataraḥ karṇaḥ partyudīyāddhanaṁjayam.

38. Sañjaya said: Having seen the approaching Pāṇḍava, Karna, completely unperplexed, went forth to meet Dhanañjaya (Arjuna), just as an elephant (advances towards) a rival elephant.
तमापतन्तं वेगेन वैकर्तनमजिह्मगैः ।
वारयामास तेजस्वी पाण्डवः शत्रुतापनः ॥३९॥
39. tamāpatantaṁ vegena vaikartanamajihmagaiḥ ,
vārayāmāsa tejasvī pāṇḍavaḥ śatrutāpanaḥ.

vārayāmāsa tejasvī pāṇḍavaḥ śatrutāpanaḥ

39. The powerful Pāṇḍava, the tormentor of foes, swiftly warded off Vaikartana (Karna) who was approaching with his straight-flying arrows.
तं कर्णः शरजालेन छादयामास मारिष ।
विव्याध च सुसंक्रुद्धः शरैस्त्रिभिरजिह्मगैः ॥४०॥
40. taṁ karṇaḥ śarajālena chādayāmāsa māriṣa ,
vivyādha ca susaṁkruddhaḥ śaraistribhirajihmagaiḥ.
40. tam karṇaḥ śarajālena chādayāmāsa māriṣa vivyādha
ca susaṃkruddhaḥ śaraiḥ tribhiḥ ajihmagaiḥ

40. O respected one, Karna, greatly enraged, enveloped him (Arjuna) with a volley of arrows and also pierced him with three straight-flying arrows.
तस्य तल्लाघवं पार्थो नामृष्यत महाबलः ।
तस्मै बाणाञ्शिलाधौतान्प्रसन्नाग्रानजिह्मगान् ॥४१॥
41. tasya tallāghavaṁ pārtho nāmṛṣyata mahābalaḥ ,
tasmai bāṇāñśilādhautānprasannāgrānajihmagān.
41. tasya tat lāghavam pārthaḥ na amṛṣyata mahābalaḥ
| tasmai bāṇān śilādhautān prasannāgrān ajihmagān

41. The mighty Arjuna (Pārtha) did not tolerate that disrespect. To him (Karṇa), he dispatched straight-flying arrows with sharp, bright points, which had been cleansed on a stone.
प्राहिणोत्सूतपुत्राय त्रिंशतं शत्रुतापनः ।
विव्याध चैनं संरब्धो बाणेनैकेन वीर्यवान् ॥४२॥
42. prāhiṇotsūtaputrāya triṁśataṁ śatrutāpanaḥ ,
vivyādha cainaṁ saṁrabdho bāṇenaikena vīryavān.
42. prāhiṇot sūtaputrāya triṃśatam śatrutāpanaḥ |
vivyādha ca enam saṃrabdhaḥ bāṇena ekena vīryavān

42. The tormentor of foes dispatched thirty (arrows) to the son of Sūta (Karṇa). And the powerful one, enraged, pierced him with a single arrow.
सव्ये भुजाग्रे बलवान्नाराचेन हसन्निव ।
तस्य विद्धस्य वेगेन कराच्चापं पपात ह ॥४३॥
43. savye bhujāgre balavānnārācena hasanniva ,
tasya viddhasya vegena karāccāpaṁ papāta ha.

43. The mighty one (Arjuna) struck him (Karṇa) on the left forearm with an iron arrow, as if laughing. From the hand of the one (Karṇa) thus wounded, the bow fell with force.
पुनरादाय तच्चापं निमेषार्धान्महाबलः ।
छादयामास बाणौघैः फल्गुनं कृतहस्तवत् ॥४४॥
44. punarādāya taccāpaṁ nimeṣārdhānmahābalaḥ ,
chādayāmāsa bāṇaughaiḥ phalgunaṁ kṛtahastavat.
44. punar ādāya tat cāpam nimeṣārdhāt mahābalaḥ |
chādayāmāsa bāṇaughaiḥ phalgunam kṛtahastavat
44. mahābalaḥ nimeṣārdhāt tat cāpam punar ādāya

44. The mighty one (Karṇa), having again picked up that bow in half a wink, then overwhelmed Arjuna (Phalguna) with showers of arrows, like a skilled archer.
शरवृष्टिं तु तां मुक्तां सूतपुत्रेण भारत ।
व्यधमच्छरवर्षेण स्मयन्निव धनंजयः ॥४५॥
45. śaravṛṣṭiṁ tu tāṁ muktāṁ sūtaputreṇa bhārata ,
vyadhamaccharavarṣeṇa smayanniva dhanaṁjayaḥ.
45. śaravṛṣṭim tu tām muktām sūtaputreṇa bhārata
| vyadhamat śaravarṣeṇa smayan iva dhanaṃjayaḥ
45. bhārata tu dhanaṃjayaḥ smayan iva sūtaputreṇa
muktām tām śaravṛṣṭim śaravarṣeṇa vyadhamat
45. But, O Bharata, Dhananjaya (Arjuna), as if smiling, dispersed that volley of arrows released by Karna with a shower of his own arrows.
तौ परस्परमासाद्य शरवर्षेण पार्थिव ।
छादयेतां महेष्वासौ कृतप्रतिकृतैषिणौ ॥४६॥
46. tau parasparamāsādya śaravarṣeṇa pārthiva ,
chādayetāṁ maheṣvāsau kṛtapratikṛtaiṣiṇau.

46. O King, those two great archers, seeking to repay deed for deed, having come face to face, covered each other with showers of arrows.
तदद्भुतमभूद्युद्धं कर्णपाण्डवयोर्मृधे ।
क्रुद्धयोर्वाशिताहेतोर्वन्ययोर्गजयोरिव ॥४७॥
47. tadadbhutamabhūdyuddhaṁ karṇapāṇḍavayormṛdhe ,
kruddhayorvāśitāhetorvanyayorgajayoriva.
47. tad adbhutam abhūt yuddham karṇapāṇḍavayoḥ mṛdhe
| kruddhayoḥ vāśitāhetoḥ vanyayoḥ gajayoḥ iva
47. mṛdhe karṇapāṇḍavayoḥ tat yuddham vāśitāhetoḥ
kruddhayoḥ vanyayoḥ gajayoḥ iva adbhutam abhūt
47. That battle between Karna and the Pandava (Arjuna) in the combat was astonishing, like that of two enraged wild elephants fighting for the sake of a female elephant.
ततः पार्थो महेष्वासो दृष्ट्वा कर्णस्य विक्रमम् ।
मुष्टिदेशे धनुस्तस्य चिच्छेद त्वरयान्वितः ॥४८॥
48. tataḥ pārtho maheṣvāso dṛṣṭvā karṇasya vikramam ,
muṣṭideśe dhanustasya ciccheda tvarayānvitaḥ.
48. tataḥ pārthaḥ maheṣvāsaḥ dṛṣṭvā karṇasya vikramam

48. Then, the great archer Partha (Arjuna), observing Karna's prowess, swiftly cut his (Karna's) bow at the hand-grip.
अश्वांश्च चतुरो भल्लैरनयद्यमसादनम् ।
सारथेश्च शिरः कायादहरच्छत्रुतापनः ॥४९॥
49. aśvāṁśca caturo bhallairanayadyamasādanam ,
sāratheśca śiraḥ kāyādaharacchatrutāpanaḥ.
49. aśvān ca caturaḥ bhallaiḥ anayat yamasādanam
sāratheḥ ca śiraḥ kāyāt aharat śatrutāpanaḥ

49. The tormentor of enemies (śatrutāpanaḥ) dispatched the four horses to Yama's abode (yamasādanam) with lances, and he also severed the charioteer's head from his body.
अथैनं छिन्नधन्वानं हताश्वं हतसारथिम् ।
विव्याध सायकैः पार्थश्चतुर्भिः पाण्डुनन्दनः ॥५०॥
50. athainaṁ chinnadhanvānaṁ hatāśvaṁ hatasārathim ,
vivyādha sāyakaiḥ pārthaścaturbhiḥ pāṇḍunandanaḥ.
50. atha enam chinnadhanvānam hatāśvam hatasārathim
vivyādha sāyakaiḥ pārthaḥ caturbhiḥ pāṇḍunandanaḥ
50. atha pāṇḍunandanaḥ pārthaḥ enam chinnadhanvānam

50. Then, Pārtha, the delight of Pāṇḍu's line (pāṇḍunandanaḥ), struck him – whose bow was broken, whose horses were slain, and whose charioteer was killed – with four arrows.
हताश्वात्तु रथात्तूर्णमवप्लुत्य नरर्षभः ।
आरुरोह रथं तूर्णं कृपस्य शरपीडितः ॥५१॥
51. hatāśvāttu rathāttūrṇamavaplutya nararṣabhaḥ ,
āruroha rathaṁ tūrṇaṁ kṛpasya śarapīḍitaḥ.

ārūroha ratham tūrṇam kṛpasya śarapīḍitaḥ

51. But that best of men (nararṣabhaḥ), wounded by arrows (śarapīḍitaḥ), quickly dismounted (avaplutya) from his chariot with slain horses (hatāśvāt), and quickly ascended (ārūroha) Kṛpa's (kṛpasya) chariot.
राधेयं निर्जितं दृष्ट्वा तावका भरतर्षभ ।
धनंजयशरैर्नुन्नाः प्राद्रवन्त दिशो दश ॥५२॥
52. rādheyaṁ nirjitaṁ dṛṣṭvā tāvakā bharatarṣabha ,
dhanaṁjayaśarairnunnāḥ prādravanta diśo daśa.

52. O best of Bharatas (bharatarṣabha), seeing Rādhā's son (rādheyam) vanquished (nirjitam), your (tāvakāḥ) warriors, driven by Dhananjaya's (Arjuna's) arrows (dhanañjayaśaraiḥ), scattered (prādravanta) in all ten directions (diśo daśa).
द्रवतस्तान्समालोक्य राजा दुर्योधनो नृप ।
निवर्तयामास तदा वाक्यं चेदमुवाच ह ॥५३॥
53. dravatastānsamālokya rājā duryodhano nṛpa ,
nivartayāmāsa tadā vākyaṁ cedamuvāca ha.

nivartayāmāsa tadā vākyam ca idam uvāca ha
53. nṛpa,

53. O King (nṛpa), having seen those (soldiers) fleeing, King Duryodhana then stopped them and indeed spoke these words.
अलं द्रुतेन वः शूरास्तिष्ठध्वं क्षत्रियर्षभाः ।
एष पार्थवधायाहं स्वयं गच्छामि संयुगे ।
अहं पार्थान्हनिष्यामि सपाञ्चालान्ससोमकान् ॥५४॥
54. alaṁ drutena vaḥ śūrāstiṣṭhadhvaṁ kṣatriyarṣabhāḥ ,
eṣa pārthavadhāyāhaṁ svayaṁ gacchāmi saṁyuge ,
ahaṁ pārthānhaniṣyāmi sapāñcālānsasomakān.
54. alam drutena vaḥ śūrāḥ tiṣṭhadhvam
kṣatriyarṣabhāḥ eṣaḥ pārthavadhāya
aham svayam gacchāmi saṃyuge
aham pārthān sa-pāñcālān sa-somakān
54. vaḥ drutena alam! śūrāḥ,
kṣatriyarṣabhāḥ,
tiṣṭhadhvam! eṣaḥ aham svayam saṃyuge pārthavadhāya gacchāmi.
aham pārthān sa-pāñcālān sa-somakān haniṣyāmi.
54. Enough of your fleeing, O heroes (śūra), O best of kshatriyas! Stand firm! I myself will go to battle now for the killing of Arjuna (Pārtha). I will kill the Pāṇḍavas, along with the Pāñcālas and the Somakas.
अद्य मे युध्यमानस्य सह गाण्डीवधन्वना ।
द्रक्ष्यन्ति विक्रमं पार्थाः कालस्येव युगक्षये ॥५५॥
55. adya me yudhyamānasya saha gāṇḍīvadhanvanā ,
drakṣyanti vikramaṁ pārthāḥ kālasyeva yugakṣaye.

55. Today, while I fight against the wielder of the Gaṇḍīva bow (Arjuna), the Pāṇḍavas will witness my valor, just as they would witness Time's (kāla) might at the end of a cosmic age (yugakṣaya).
अद्य मद्बाणजालानि विमुक्तानि सहस्रशः ।
द्रक्ष्यन्ति समरे योधाः शलभानामिवायतीः ॥५६॥
56. adya madbāṇajālāni vimuktāni sahasraśaḥ ,
drakṣyanti samare yodhāḥ śalabhānāmivāyatīḥ.

56. Today in battle, warriors will see my thousands of released arrow-nets, just like swarms of locusts.
अद्य बाणमयं वर्षं सृजतो मम धन्विनः ।
जीमूतस्येव घर्मान्ते द्रक्ष्यन्ति युधि सैनिकाः ॥५७॥
57. adya bāṇamayaṁ varṣaṁ sṛjato mama dhanvinaḥ ,
jīmūtasyeva gharmānte drakṣyanti yudhi sainikāḥ.

57. Today, my soldiers will see me, the archer, unleashing a shower of arrows in battle, just as they see a cloud at the end of the hot season.
जेष्याम्यद्य रणे पार्थं सायकैर्नतपर्वभिः ।
तिष्ठध्वं समरे शूरा भयं त्यजत फल्गुनात् ॥५८॥
58. jeṣyāmyadya raṇe pārthaṁ sāyakairnataparvabhiḥ ,
tiṣṭhadhvaṁ samare śūrā bhayaṁ tyajata phalgunāt.

58. Today in battle, I will conquer Pārtha with my straight-shafted arrows. O heroes, stand firm in this battle and abandon all fear of Phalguna!
न हि मद्वीर्यमासाद्य फल्गुनः प्रसहिष्यति ।
यथा वेलां समासाद्य सागरो मकरालयः ॥५९॥
59. na hi madvīryamāsādya phalgunaḥ prasahiṣyati ,
yathā velāṁ samāsādya sāgaro makarālayaḥ.
59. na hi mat-vīryam āsādya phalgunaḥ prasahiṣyati
yathā velām samāsādya sāgaraḥ makarālayaḥ
59. hi phalgunaḥ mat-vīryam āsādya na prasahiṣyati yathā

59. Indeed, Phalguna will not be able to withstand my valor (vīrya) after encountering it, just as the ocean, the abode of sea creatures, cannot transgress its boundary after reaching it.
इत्युक्त्वा प्रययौ राजा सैन्येन महता वृतः ।
फल्गुनं प्रति दुर्धर्षः क्रोधसंरक्तलोचनः ॥६०॥
60. ityuktvā prayayau rājā sainyena mahatā vṛtaḥ ,
phalgunaṁ prati durdharṣaḥ krodhasaṁraktalocanaḥ.

60. Having spoken thus, the formidable king, whose eyes were red with anger, set out towards Phalguna, surrounded by a large army.
तं प्रयान्तं महाबाहुं दृष्ट्वा शारद्वतस्तदा ।
अश्वत्थामानमासाद्य वाक्यमेतदुवाच ह ॥६१॥
61. taṁ prayāntaṁ mahābāhuṁ dṛṣṭvā śāradvatastadā ,
aśvatthāmānamāsādya vākyametaduvāca ha.
61. tam prayāntam mahābāhum dṛṣṭvā śāradvataḥ tadā

61. Then, having seen that mighty-armed one (Duryodhana) departing, Kṛpa (Śāradvata) approached Aśvatthāmā and spoke these words.
एष राजा महाबाहुरमर्षी क्रोधमूर्छितः ।
पतंगवृत्तिमास्थाय फल्गुनं योद्धुमिच्छति ॥६२॥
62. eṣa rājā mahābāhuramarṣī krodhamūrchitaḥ ,
pataṁgavṛttimāsthāya phalgunaṁ yoddhumicchati.
62. eṣaḥ rājā mahābāhuḥ amarṣī krodhamūrcitaḥ
pataṅgavṛttim āsthāya phalgunam yoddhum icchati

62. This mighty-armed king, intolerant and overcome by anger, wishes to fight Arjuna, having adopted the suicidal behavior of a moth.
यावन्नः पश्यमानानां प्राणान्पार्थेन संगतः ।
न जह्यात्पुरुषव्याघ्रस्तावद्वारय कौरवम् ॥६३॥
63. yāvannaḥ paśyamānānāṁ prāṇānpārthena saṁgataḥ ,
na jahyātpuruṣavyāghrastāvadvāraya kauravam.
63. yāvat naḥ paśyamānānām prāṇān pārthena saṅgataḥ
na jahyāt puruṣavyāghraḥ tāvat vāraya kauravam

63. As long as that tiger among men (Duryodhana) does not lose his lives (prāṇa) in a confrontation with Arjuna, while we are watching, restrain that Kuru (Duryodhana).
यावत्फल्गुनबाणानां गोचरं नाधिगच्छति ।
कौरवः पार्थिवो वीरस्तावद्वारय तं द्रुतम् ॥६४॥
64. yāvatphalgunabāṇānāṁ gocaraṁ nādhigacchati ,
kauravaḥ pārthivo vīrastāvadvāraya taṁ drutam.
64. yāvat phalgunabāṇānām gocaram na adhigacchati
kauravaḥ pārthivaḥ vīraḥ tāvat vāraya tam drutam
64. yāvat kauravaḥ pārthivaḥ vīraḥ phalgunabāṇānām

64. Quickly restrain him (Duryodhana) before that heroic Kuru king comes within the range of Arjuna's arrows.
यावत्पार्थशरैर्घोरैर्निर्मुक्तोरगसंनिभैः ।
न भस्मीक्रियते राजा तावद्युद्धान्निवार्यताम् ॥६५॥
65. yāvatpārthaśarairghorairnirmuktoragasaṁnibhaiḥ ,
na bhasmīkriyate rājā tāvadyuddhānnivāryatām.

65. Let the king be restrained from battle until he is reduced to ashes by Arjuna's dreadful arrows, which resemble snakes that have shed their skin.
अयुक्तमिव पश्यामि तिष्ठत्स्वस्मासु मानद ।
स्वयं युद्धाय यद्राजा पार्थं यात्यसहायवान् ॥६६॥
66. ayuktamiva paśyāmi tiṣṭhatsvasmāsu mānada ,
svayaṁ yuddhāya yadrājā pārthaṁ yātyasahāyavān.

66. O giver of honor, I consider it improper that the king himself goes to battle against Arjuna without assistance, while we are standing by.
दुर्लभं जीवितं मन्ये कौरव्यस्य किरीटिना ।
युध्यमानस्य पार्थेन शार्दूलेनेव हस्तिनः ॥६७॥
67. durlabhaṁ jīvitaṁ manye kauravyasya kirīṭinā ,
yudhyamānasya pārthena śārdūleneva hastinaḥ.

67. I consider the life of the Kaurava (Duryodhana), while he is fighting with Arjuna (Kirīṭin), to be difficult to preserve, just as an elephant's life would be against a tiger.
मातुलेनैवमुक्तस्तु द्रौणिः शस्त्रभृतां वरः ।
दुर्योधनमिदं वाक्यं त्वरितं समभाषत ॥६८॥
68. mātulenaivamuktastu drauṇiḥ śastrabhṛtāṁ varaḥ ,
duryodhanamidaṁ vākyaṁ tvaritaṁ samabhāṣata.

68. Thus spoken to by his maternal uncle, Droṇa's son (Drauṇi), the foremost among weapon-bearers, quickly spoke this statement to Duryodhana.
मयि जीवति गान्धारे न युद्धं गन्तुमर्हसि ।
मामनादृत्य कौरव्य तव नित्यं हितैषिणम् ॥६९॥
69. mayi jīvati gāndhāre na yuddhaṁ gantumarhasi ,
māmanādṛtya kauravya tava nityaṁ hitaiṣiṇam.

69. O son of Gandhari, you should not go to war while I am alive. To do so would be to disregard me, O descendant of Kuru, your constant well-wisher.
न हि ते संभ्रमः कार्यः पार्थस्य विजयं प्रति ।
अहमावारयिष्यामि पार्थं तिष्ठ सुयोधन ॥७०॥
70. na hi te saṁbhramaḥ kāryaḥ pārthasya vijayaṁ prati ,
ahamāvārayiṣyāmi pārthaṁ tiṣṭha suyodhana.

70. Indeed, there is no need for you to be agitated regarding Partha's victory. I will stop Partha. O Suyodhana, stand firm!
दुर्योधन उवाच ।
आचार्यः पाण्डुपुत्रान्वै पुत्रवत्परिरक्षति ।
त्वमप्युपेक्षां कुरुषे तेषु नित्यं द्विजोत्तम ॥७१॥
71. duryodhana uvāca ,
ācāryaḥ pāṇḍuputrānvai putravatparirakṣati ,
tvamapyupekṣāṁ kuruṣe teṣu nityaṁ dvijottama.

71. Duryodhana said: 'The preceptor (Drona) truly protects the sons of Pandu as if they were his own sons. And you, O best among the twice-born (dvija), constantly neglect them.'
मम वा मन्दभाग्यत्वान्मन्दस्ते विक्रमो युधि ।
धर्मराजप्रियार्थं वा द्रौपद्या वा न विद्म तत् ॥७२॥
72. mama vā mandabhāgyatvānmandaste vikramo yudhi ,
dharmarājapriyārthaṁ vā draupadyā vā na vidma tat.

72. We do not know that (reason): whether your valor (vikrama) in battle is diminished because of my ill-fortune, or for the sake of pleasing Dharmaraja (Yudhiṣṭhira), or for Draupadī's sake.
धिगस्तु मम लुब्धस्य यत्कृते सर्वबान्धवाः ।
सुखार्हाः परमं दुःखं प्राप्नुवन्त्यपराजिताः ॥७३॥
73. dhigastu mama lubdhasya yatkṛte sarvabāndhavāḥ ,
sukhārhāḥ paramaṁ duḥkhaṁ prāpnuvantyaparājitāḥ.

73. Shame on me, the greedy one, for whose sake all my relatives, who are deserving of happiness, are experiencing extreme suffering, even though they remain undefeated.
को हि शस्त्रभृतां मुख्यो महेश्वरसमो युधि ।
शत्रून्न क्षपयेच्छक्तो यो न स्याद्गौतमीसुतः ॥७४॥
74. ko hi śastrabhṛtāṁ mukhyo maheśvarasamo yudhi ,
śatrūnna kṣapayecchakto yo na syādgautamīsutaḥ.

74. Who among the foremost weapon-bearers, equal to Maheśvara (Śiva) in battle, being capable, would be able to destroy enemies, if he were not the son of Gotami?
अश्वत्थामन्प्रसीदस्व नाशयैतान्ममाहितान् ।
तवास्त्रगोचरे शक्ताः स्थातुं देवापि नानघ ॥७५॥
75. aśvatthāmanprasīdasva nāśayaitānmamāhitān ,
tavāstragocare śaktāḥ sthātuṁ devāpi nānagha.

tava astragocare śaktāḥ sthātum devā api na anagha

75. O Ashvatthama, be gracious; destroy these enemies of mine. O sinless one, even the gods are not capable of standing within the range of your weapons.
पाञ्चालान्सोमकांश्चैव जहि द्रौणे सहानुगान् ।
वयं शेषान्हनिष्यामस्त्वयैव परिरक्षिताः ॥७६॥
76. pāñcālānsomakāṁścaiva jahi drauṇe sahānugān ,
vayaṁ śeṣānhaniṣyāmastvayaiva parirakṣitāḥ.
76. pāñcālān somakān ca eva jahi drauṇe saha anugān
vayam śeṣān haniṣyāmaḥ tvayā eva parirakṣitāḥ

76. O son of Drona, kill the Panchalas and the Somakas along with their followers. We, protected by you, will kill the remaining ones.

मम सैन्येषु संरब्धा विचरन्ति दवाग्निवत् ॥७७॥
77. ete hi somakā vipra pāñcālāśca yaśasvinaḥ ,
mama sainyeṣu saṁrabdhā vicaranti davāgnivat.

77. Indeed, O brahmin, these renowned Somakas and Panchalas, enraged, are fiercely moving through my armies like a devastating forest fire.
तान्वारय महाबाहो केकयांश्च नरोत्तम ।
पुरा कुर्वन्ति निःशेषं रक्ष्यमाणाः किरीटिना ॥७८॥
78. tānvāraya mahābāho kekayāṁśca narottama ,
purā kurvanti niḥśeṣaṁ rakṣyamāṇāḥ kirīṭinā.

78. O mighty-armed one, O best among men, stop them and the Kekayas, lest they, protected by Arjuna (kirīṭin), completely annihilate [my forces].
आदौ वा यदि वा पश्चात्तवेदं कर्म मारिष ।
त्वमुत्पन्नो महाबाहो पाञ्चालानां वधं प्रति ॥७९॥
79. ādau vā yadi vā paścāttavedaṁ karma māriṣa ,
tvamutpanno mahābāho pāñcālānāṁ vadhaṁ prati.
79. ādau vā yadi vā paścāt tava idam karma māriṣa
tvam utpannaḥ mahābāho pāñcālānām vadham prati
79. māriṣa ādau vā yadi vā paścāt idam karma tava;

79. Whether it happens now or later, O respected one, this is your destined action (karma). O mighty-armed one, you have been born for the destruction of the Panchalas.
करिष्यसि जगत्सर्वमपाञ्चालं किलाच्युत ।
एवं सिद्धाब्रुवन्वाचो भविष्यति च तत्तथा ॥८०॥
80. kariṣyasi jagatsarvamapāñcālaṁ kilācyuta ,
evaṁ siddhābruvanvāco bhaviṣyati ca tattathā.
80. kariṣyasi jagat sarvam apāñcālam kila acyuta evam
siddhāḥ abruvan vācaḥ bhaviṣyati ca tat tathā

80. Indeed, O infallible one (acyuta), you will make the entire world free of Panchalas. Thus spoke the perfected beings (siddhas), and so it will come to pass.
न तेऽस्त्रगोचरे शक्ताः स्थातुं देवाः सवासवाः ।
किमु पार्थाः सपाञ्चालाः सत्यमेतद्वचो मम ॥८१॥
81. na te'stragocare śaktāḥ sthātuṁ devāḥ savāsavāḥ ,
kimu pārthāḥ sapāñcālāḥ satyametadvaco mama.
81. na te astragocare śaktāḥ sthātum devāḥ savāsavāḥ
kimu pārthāḥ sapāñcālāḥ satyam etat vacaḥ mama

81. Not even the gods, with Indra, are able to stand within the range of your weapons. What then of the sons of Pṛthā, along with the Pañcālas? This word of mine is true.
