वैशंपायन उवाच ।
ते वनेन वनं वीरा घ्नन्तो मृगगणान्बहून् ।
अपक्रम्य ययू राजंस्त्वरमाणा महारथाः ॥१॥
1. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
te vanena vanaṁ vīrā ghnanto mṛgagaṇānbahūn ,
apakramya yayū rājaṁstvaramāṇā mahārathāḥ.
1. vaiśampāyanaḥ uvāca te vanena vanam vīrāḥ ghnantaḥ mṛga-gaṇān
bahūn apa-kramya yayūḥ rājan tvaramāṇāḥ mahā-rathāḥ
1. Vaiśampāyana said: "O King, those heroes, the great chariot-warriors, traversed from one forest to another, slaying many groups of deer, hurrying along."
मत्स्यांस्त्रिगर्तान्पाञ्चालान्कीचकानन्तरेण च ।
रमणीयान्वनोद्देशान्प्रेक्षमाणाः सरांसि च ॥२॥
2. matsyāṁstrigartānpāñcālānkīcakānantareṇa ca ,
ramaṇīyānvanoddeśānprekṣamāṇāḥ sarāṁsi ca.
2. matsyān trigartān pāñcālān kīcakān anantareṇa
ca ramaṇīyān vanoddeśān prekṣamāṇāḥ sarāṃsi ca
2. Seeing the Matsyas, Trigartas, Panchalas, and Kīcakas as they passed, and also gazing upon charming forest regions and lakes.
जटाः कृत्वात्मनः सर्वे वल्कलाजिनवाससः ।
सह कुन्त्या महात्मानो बिभ्रतस्तापसं वपुः ॥३॥
3. jaṭāḥ kṛtvātmanaḥ sarve valkalājinavāsasaḥ ,
saha kuntyā mahātmāno bibhratastāpasaṁ vapuḥ.
3. jaṭāḥ kṛtvā ātmanaḥ sarve valkalājinavāsasaḥ
saha kuntyā mahātmānaḥ bibhrataḥ tāpasaṃ vapuḥ
3. All of them, having formed matted locks for themselves and dressed in bark garments and deer skins, the great souls (mahātman), along with Kuntī, assumed the form of ascetics.
क्वचिद्वहन्तो जननीं त्वरमाणा महारथाः ।
क्वचिच्छन्देन गच्छन्तस्ते जग्मुः प्रसभं पुनः ॥४॥
4. kvacidvahanto jananīṁ tvaramāṇā mahārathāḥ ,
kvacicchandena gacchantaste jagmuḥ prasabhaṁ punaḥ.
4. kvacit vahantaḥ jananīṃ tvaramāṇāḥ mahārathāḥ kvacit
chandena gacchantaḥ te jagmuḥ prasabhaṃ punaḥ
4. At times, the great charioteers (mahāratha) would carry their mother, hastening; and at other times, they would go as they pleased. Thus, they continued their journey, often with great speed.
ब्राह्मं वेदमधीयाना वेदाङ्गानि च सर्वशः ।
नीतिशास्त्रं च धर्मज्ञा ददृशुस्ते पितामहम् ॥५॥
5. brāhmaṁ vedamadhīyānā vedāṅgāni ca sarvaśaḥ ,
nītiśāstraṁ ca dharmajñā dadṛśuste pitāmaham.
5. brāhmaṃ vedam adhīyānāḥ vedāṅgāni ca sarvaśaḥ
nītiśāstraṃ ca dharmajñāḥ dadṛśuḥ te pitāmaham
5. They, who were learned in the sacred Veda, all the Vedāngas completely, and the science of ethics, and who understood (dharma), then saw their grandfather.
तेऽभिवाद्य महात्मानं कृष्णद्वैपायनं तदा ।
तस्थुः प्राञ्जलयः सर्वे सह मात्रा परंतपाः ॥६॥
6. te'bhivādya mahātmānaṁ kṛṣṇadvaipāyanaṁ tadā ,
tasthuḥ prāñjalayaḥ sarve saha mātrā paraṁtapāḥ.
6. te abhivādya mahātmānaṃ kṛṣṇadvaipāyanaṃ tadā
tasthuḥ prāñjalayaḥ sarve saha mātrā paraṃtapāḥ
6. Then, having saluted the great soul (mahātman) Kṛṣṇadvaipāyana (Vyāsa), all of them, those tormentors of foes, stood with folded hands along with their mother.
व्यास उवाच ।
मयेदं मनसा पूर्वं विदितं भरतर्षभाः ।
यथा स्थितैरधर्मेण धार्तराष्ट्रैर्विवासिताः ॥७॥
7. vyāsa uvāca ,
mayedaṁ manasā pūrvaṁ viditaṁ bharatarṣabhāḥ ,
yathā sthitairadharmeṇa dhārtarāṣṭrairvivāsitāḥ.
7. vyāsa uvāca mayā idam manasā pūrvam viditam bharatarṣabhāḥ
yathā sthitaiḥ adharmeṇa dhārtarāṣṭraiḥ vivāsitāḥ
7. Vyāsa said: "O best of Bharatas, I knew this in my mind beforehand: how you were exiled by the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra, who persisted in unrighteousness (adharma)."
तद्विदित्वास्मि संप्राप्तश्चिकीर्षुः परमं हितम् ।
न विषादोऽत्र कर्तव्यः सर्वमेतत्सुखाय वः ॥८॥
8. tadviditvāsmi saṁprāptaścikīrṣuḥ paramaṁ hitam ,
na viṣādo'tra kartavyaḥ sarvametatsukhāya vaḥ.
8. tat viditvā asmi samprāptaḥ cikīrṣuḥ paramam hitam
na viṣādaḥ atra kartavyaḥ sarvam etat sukhāya vaḥ
8. Having known that, I have come here desiring to do what is of supreme benefit. There should be no despondency here; all of this is for your welfare.
समास्ते चैव मे सर्वे यूयं चैव न संशयः ।
दीनतो बालतश्चैव स्नेहं कुर्वन्ति बान्धवाः ॥९॥
9. samāste caiva me sarve yūyaṁ caiva na saṁśayaḥ ,
dīnato bālataścaiva snehaṁ kurvanti bāndhavāḥ.
9. samāḥ ca eva me sarve yūyam ca eva na saṃśayaḥ
dīnataḥ bālataḥ ca eva sneham kurvanti bāndhavāḥ
9. To me, all of you are indeed equal; there is no doubt about that. Kinsmen indeed show affection (sneha) towards the distressed and towards children.
तस्मादभ्यधिकः स्नेहो युष्मासु मम सांप्रतम् ।
स्नेहपूर्वं चिकीर्षामि हितं वस्तन्निबोधत ॥१०॥
10. tasmādabhyadhikaḥ sneho yuṣmāsu mama sāṁpratam ,
snehapūrvaṁ cikīrṣāmi hitaṁ vastannibodhata.
10. tasmāt abhyadhikaḥ snehaḥ yuṣmāsu mama sāmpratam
sneha-pūrvam cikīrṣāmi hitam vaḥ tat nibodhata
10. Therefore, my affection (sneha) for you is now greater. I intend to do what is beneficial for you, motivated by affection; understand that.
इदं नगरमभ्याशे रमणीयं निरामयम् ।
वसतेह प्रतिच्छन्ना ममागमनकाङ्क्षिणः ॥११॥
11. idaṁ nagaramabhyāśe ramaṇīyaṁ nirāmayam ,
vasateha praticchannā mamāgamanakāṅkṣiṇaḥ.
11. idam nagaram abhyāśe ramaṇīyam nirāmayam vasata
iha praticchannāḥ mama āgamana-kāṅkṣiṇaḥ
11. This city nearby is beautiful and free from harm. Dwell here, concealed, while you await my arrival.
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
एवं स तान्समाश्वास्य व्यासः पार्थानरिंदमान् ।
एकचक्रामभिगतः कुन्तीमाश्वासयत्प्रभुः ॥१२॥
12. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
evaṁ sa tānsamāśvāsya vyāsaḥ pārthānariṁdamān ,
ekacakrāmabhigataḥ kuntīmāśvāsayatprabhuḥ.
12. vaiśaṃpāyanaḥ uvāca evam saḥ tān samāśvāsya vyāsaḥ pārthān
arindamān ekacakrām abhigataḥ kuntīm āśvāsayat prabhuḥ
12. Vaiśampāyana said: Having thus consoled those Pārthas, the subduers of foes, the venerable Vyāsa, after arriving at Ekacakrā, then consoled Kuntī.
जीवपुत्रि सुतस्तेऽयं धर्मपुत्रो युधिष्ठिरः ।
पृथिव्यां पार्थिवान्सर्वान्प्रशासिष्यति धर्मराट् ॥१३॥
13. jīvaputri sutaste'yaṁ dharmaputro yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ,
pṛthivyāṁ pārthivānsarvānpraśāsiṣyati dharmarāṭ.
13. jīvaputri sutaḥ te ayam dharmaputraḥ yudhiṣṭhiraḥ
pṛthivyām pārthivān sarvān praśāsiṣyati dharmarāṭ
13. O you whose sons are alive, this son of yours, Yudhiṣṭhira, the son of Dharma (natural law), the king of natural law, will rule all the kings on earth.
धर्मेण जित्वा पृथिवीमखिलां धर्मविद्वशी ।
भीमसेनार्जुनबलाद्भोक्ष्यत्ययमसंशयः ॥१४॥
14. dharmeṇa jitvā pṛthivīmakhilāṁ dharmavidvaśī ,
bhīmasenārjunabalādbhokṣyatyayamasaṁśayaḥ.
14. dharmeṇa jitvā pṛthivīm akhilām dharmavit vaśī
bhīmasenārjunabalāt bhokṣyati ayam asaṃśayaḥ
14. Having conquered the entire earth righteously (dharma), he, the knower of natural law (dharma) and master of himself, will undoubtedly enjoy it through the strength of Bhīmasena and Arjuna.
पुत्रास्तव च माद्र्याश्च सर्व एव महारथाः ।
स्वराष्ट्रे विहरिष्यन्ति सुखं सुमनसस्तदा ॥१५॥
15. putrāstava ca mādryāśca sarva eva mahārathāḥ ,
svarāṣṭre vihariṣyanti sukhaṁ sumanasastadā.
15. putrāḥ tava ca mādryāḥ ca sarve eva mahārathāḥ
svarāṣṭre vihariṣyanti sukham sumanasaḥ tadā
15. Then, all your sons and Mādri's sons, who are great charioteers (mahārathas), will happily and cheerfully dwell in their own kingdom.
यक्ष्यन्ति च नरव्याघ्रा विजित्य पृथिवीमिमाम् ।
राजसूयाश्वमेधाद्यैः क्रतुभिर्भूरिदक्षिणैः ॥१६॥
16. yakṣyanti ca naravyāghrā vijitya pṛthivīmimām ,
rājasūyāśvamedhādyaiḥ kratubhirbhūridakṣiṇaiḥ.
16. yakṣyanti ca naravyāghrāḥ vijitya pṛthivīm imām
rājasūyāśvamedhādyaīḥ kratubhiḥ bhūridakṣiṇaīḥ
16. And these tiger-like men (heroes), having conquered this earth, will perform sacrifices such as the rājasūya and aśvamedha, accompanied by abundant offerings (dakṣiṇās).
अनुगृह्य सुहृद्वर्गं धनेन च सुखेन च ।
पितृपैतामहं राज्यमिह भोक्ष्यन्ति ते सुताः ॥१७॥
17. anugṛhya suhṛdvargaṁ dhanena ca sukhena ca ,
pitṛpaitāmahaṁ rājyamiha bhokṣyanti te sutāḥ.
17. anugṛhya suhṛdvargam dhanena ca sukhena ca
pitṛpaitāmaham rājyam iha bhokṣyanti te sutāḥ
17. Your sons will enjoy the ancestral kingdom here, having graced their friends with both wealth and happiness.
एवमुक्त्वा निवेश्यैनान्ब्राह्मणस्य निवेशने ।
अब्रवीत्पार्थिवश्रेष्ठमृषिर्द्वैपायनस्तदा ॥१८॥
18. evamuktvā niveśyainānbrāhmaṇasya niveśane ,
abravītpārthivaśreṣṭhamṛṣirdvaipāyanastadā.
18. evam uktvā niveśya enān brāhmaṇasya niveśane
abravīt pārthivaśreṣṭham ṛṣiḥ dvaipāyanaḥ tadā
18. Having spoken thus and settled them in the brahmin's dwelling, the sage Dvaipāyana then addressed the foremost of kings.
इह मां संप्रतीक्षध्वमागमिष्याम्यहं पुनः ।
देशकालौ विदित्वैव वेत्स्यध्वं परमां मुदम् ॥१९॥
19. iha māṁ saṁpratīkṣadhvamāgamiṣyāmyahaṁ punaḥ ,
deśakālau viditvaiva vetsyadhvaṁ paramāṁ mudam.
19. iha mām sampratīkṣadhvam āgamiṣyāmi aham punaḥ
deśakālau viditvā eva vetsyadhvam paramām mudam
19. Wait for me here; I will return again. Only after discerning the right place and time will you experience supreme joy.
स तैः प्राञ्जलिभिः सर्वैस्तथेत्युक्तो नराधिप ।
जगाम भगवान्व्यासो यथाकाममृषिः प्रभुः ॥२०॥
20. sa taiḥ prāñjalibhiḥ sarvaistathetyukto narādhipa ,
jagāma bhagavānvyāso yathākāmamṛṣiḥ prabhuḥ.
20. saḥ taiḥ prāñjalibhiḥ sarvaiḥ tathā iti uktaḥ narādhipa
jagāma bhagavān vyāsaḥ yathākāmam ṛṣiḥ prabhuḥ
20. O King, the divine and powerful sage (ṛṣi) Vyāsa, having been told 'So be it' by all of them with folded hands, departed as he wished.
