वैशंपायन उवाच ।
ततः प्रासादहर्म्येषु वसुधायां च पार्थिव ।
स्त्रीणां च पुरुषाणां च सुमहान्निस्वनोऽभवत् ॥१॥
1. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
tataḥ prāsādaharmyeṣu vasudhāyāṁ ca pārthiva ,
strīṇāṁ ca puruṣāṇāṁ ca sumahānnisvano'bhavat.

1. Vaiśaṃpāyana said: O King (pārthiva), then a very great outcry arose from both women and men, both in the palaces and mansions and on the ground.
स राजा राजमार्गेण नृनारीसंकुलेन च ।
कथंचिन्निर्ययौ धीमान्वेपमानः कृताञ्जलिः ॥२॥
2. sa rājā rājamārgeṇa nṛnārīsaṁkulena ca ,
kathaṁcinniryayau dhīmānvepamānaḥ kṛtāñjaliḥ.

2. The wise king, trembling and with folded hands, somehow exited through the royal road, which was densely crowded with men and women.
स वर्धमानद्वारेण निर्ययौ गजसाह्वयात् ।
विसर्जयामास च तं जनौघं स मुहुर्मुहुः ॥३॥
3. sa vardhamānadvāreṇa niryayau gajasāhvayāt ,
visarjayāmāsa ca taṁ janaughaṁ sa muhurmuhuḥ.

visarjayāmāsa ca tam janaugham sa muhurmuhuḥ

3. He exited the city of Hastinapura (Gajasāhvaya) through the Vardhamāna gate, and he repeatedly dismissed the throng of people.
वनं गन्तुं च विदुरो राज्ञा सह कृतक्षणः ।
संजयश्च महामात्रः सूतो गावल्गणिस्तथा ॥४॥
4. vanaṁ gantuṁ ca viduro rājñā saha kṛtakṣaṇaḥ ,
saṁjayaśca mahāmātraḥ sūto gāvalgaṇistathā.
4. vanam gantum ca viduraḥ rājñā saha kṛtakṣaṇaḥ
saṃjayaḥ ca mahāmātraḥ sūtaḥ gāvalgaṇiḥ tathā

4. And Vidura, having fixed the time, was ready to go to the forest with the king. Also with them was Saṃjaya, the chief minister, the charioteer (sūta), Gāvalgaṇi.
कृपं निवर्तयामास युयुत्सुं च महारथम् ।
धृतराष्ट्रो महीपालः परिदाय युधिष्ठिरे ॥५॥
5. kṛpaṁ nivartayāmāsa yuyutsuṁ ca mahāratham ,
dhṛtarāṣṭro mahīpālaḥ paridāya yudhiṣṭhire.

dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ mahīpālaḥ paridāya yudhiṣṭhire

5. King Dhṛtarāṣṭra, the protector of the earth, sent back Kṛpa and the great warrior Yuyutsu, having entrusted (the kingdom) to Yudhiṣṭhira.
निवृत्ते पौरवर्गे तु राजा सान्तःपुरस्तदा ।
धृतराष्ट्राभ्यनुज्ञातो निवर्तितुमियेष सः ॥६॥
6. nivṛtte pauravarge tu rājā sāntaḥpurastadā ,
dhṛtarāṣṭrābhyanujñāto nivartitumiyeṣa saḥ.

dhṛtarāṣṭrābhyanujñātaḥ nivartitum iyeṣa saḥ

6. When the multitude of citizens had returned, then King (Yudhiṣṭhira), along with his royal entourage, having been permitted by Dhṛtarāṣṭra, wished to return.
सोऽब्रवीन्मातरं कुन्तीमुपेत्य भरतर्षभ ।
अहं राजानमन्विष्ये भवती विनिवर्तताम् ॥७॥
7. so'bravīnmātaraṁ kuntīmupetya bharatarṣabha ,
ahaṁ rājānamanviṣye bhavatī vinivartatām.
7. saḥ abravīt mātaram kuntīm upetya bharatarṣabha
aham rājānam anviṣye bhavatī vinivartatām
7. bharatarṣabha saḥ mātaram kuntīm upetya abravīt: "aham rājānam anviṣye.
bhavatī vinivartatām.
"
7. The best of Bharatas (Yudhiṣṭhira), having approached his mother Kuntī, said: 'I will follow the king (Dhṛtarāṣṭra); you (mother) should return.'
वधूपरिवृता राज्ञि नगरं गन्तुमर्हसि ।
राजा यात्वेष धर्मात्मा तपसे धृतनिश्चयः ॥८॥
8. vadhūparivṛtā rājñi nagaraṁ gantumarhasi ,
rājā yātveṣa dharmātmā tapase dhṛtaniścayaḥ.
8. vadhūparivṛtā rājñi nagaram gantum arhasi
rājā yātu eṣaḥ dharmātmā tapase dhṛtaniścayaḥ
8. rājñi vadhūparivṛtā nagaram gantum arhasi.
eṣaḥ dharmātmā tapase dhṛtaniścayaḥ rājā yātu.
8. O Queen, you should go to the city, accompanied by your daughters-in-law. Let this king (Dhṛtarāṣṭra), whose soul is righteous (dharmātmā) and who is resolute in his asceticism (tapas), proceed.
इत्युक्ता धर्मराजेन बाष्पव्याकुललोचना ।
जगादैवं तदा कुन्ती गान्धारीं परिगृह्य ह ॥९॥
9. ityuktā dharmarājena bāṣpavyākulalocanā ,
jagādaivaṁ tadā kuntī gāndhārīṁ parigṛhya ha.
9. iti uktā dharmarājena bāṣpavyākulalocanā
jagāda evam tadā kuntī gāndhārīm parigṛhya ha
9. dharmarājena iti uktā bāṣpavyākulalocanā kuntī tadā gāndhārīm parigṛhya evam ha jagāda.
9. Thus addressed by the king of (dharma) (Yudhiṣṭhira), Kuntī, with her eyes agitated by tears, then embraced Gāndhārī and spoke as follows.
सहदेवे महाराज मा प्रमादं कृथाः क्वचित् ।
एष मामनुरक्तो हि राजंस्त्वां चैव नित्यदा ॥१०॥
10. sahadeve mahārāja mā pramādaṁ kṛthāḥ kvacit ,
eṣa māmanurakto hi rājaṁstvāṁ caiva nityadā.
10. sahadeve mahārāja mā pramādam kṛthāḥ kvacit
eṣaḥ mām anuraktaḥ hi rājan tvām ca eva nityadā
10. mahārāja rājan sahadeve kvacit pramādam mā
kṛthāḥ hi eṣaḥ mām ca tvām eva nityadā anuraktaḥ
10. O great king, never commit any error concerning Sahadeva. Indeed, he is devoted to me, O king, and always to you.
कर्णं स्मरेथाः सततं संग्रामेष्वपलायिनम् ।
अवकीर्णो हि स मया वीरो दुष्प्रज्ञया तदा ॥११॥
11. karṇaṁ smarethāḥ satataṁ saṁgrāmeṣvapalāyinam ,
avakīrṇo hi sa mayā vīro duṣprajñayā tadā.
11. karṇam smarethāḥ satatam saṃgrāmeṣu apalāyinam
avakīrṇaḥ hi saḥ mayā vīraḥ duṣprajñayā tadā
11. satatam saṃgrāmeṣu apalāyinam karṇam smarethāḥ
hi saḥ vīraḥ mayā tadā duṣprajñayā avakīrṇaḥ
11. Always remember Karṇa, who never fled from battles. Indeed, that hero was abandoned by me at that time due to my poor understanding.
आयसं हृदयं नूनं मन्दाया मम पुत्रक ।
यत्सूर्यजमपश्यन्त्याः शतधा न विदीर्यते ॥१२॥
12. āyasaṁ hṛdayaṁ nūnaṁ mandāyā mama putraka ,
yatsūryajamapaśyantyāḥ śatadhā na vidīryate.
12. āyasam hṛdayam nūnam mandāyāḥ mama putraka
yat sūryajam apaśyantyāḥ śatadhā na vidīryate
12. putraka mama mandāyāḥ hṛdayam nūnam āyasam
yat sūryajam apaśyantyāḥ śatadhā na vidīryate
12. O my son, my foolish heart is certainly made of iron, because even though I failed to acknowledge the son of the sun (Karṇa), it does not burst into a hundred pieces.
एवंगते तु किं शक्यं मया कर्तुमरिंदम ।
मम दोषोऽयमत्यर्थं ख्यापितो यन्न सूर्यजः ।
तन्निमित्तं महाबाहो दानं दद्यास्त्वमुत्तमम् ॥१३॥
13. evaṁgate tu kiṁ śakyaṁ mayā kartumariṁdama ,
mama doṣo'yamatyarthaṁ khyāpito yanna sūryajaḥ ,
tannimittaṁ mahābāho dānaṁ dadyāstvamuttamam.
13. evam gate tu kim śakyam mayā kartum
ariṃdama mama doṣaḥ ayam atyartham
khyāpitaḥ yat na sūryajaḥ tatnimittam
mahābāho dānam dadyāḥ tvam uttamam
13. ariṃdama tu evam gate mayā kim kartum
śakyam ayam mama atyartham doṣaḥ
yat sūryajaḥ na khyāpitaḥ tatnimittam
mahābāho tvam uttamam dānam dadyāḥ
13. O subduer of enemies, what can I do now that things have come to this? This is indeed my great fault, that the son of the sun (Karṇa) was not proclaimed. Therefore, O mighty-armed one, you should give excellent charity (dāna).
सदैव भ्रातृभिः सार्धमग्रजस्यारिमर्दन ।
द्रौपद्याश्च प्रिये नित्यं स्थातव्यमरिकर्शन ॥१४॥
14. sadaiva bhrātṛbhiḥ sārdhamagrajasyārimardana ,
draupadyāśca priye nityaṁ sthātavyamarikarśana.
14. sadā eva bhrātṛbhiḥ sārdham agrajasya arimardana
draupadyāḥ ca priye nityam sthātavyam arikarśana
14. O destroyer of foes, O tormentor of foes! And O dear one (Draupadi), you must always remain together with your brothers and for the sake of the elder.
भीमसेनार्जुनौ चैव नकुलश्च कुरूद्वह ।
समाधेयास्त्वया वीर त्वय्यद्य कुलधूर्गता ॥१५॥
15. bhīmasenārjunau caiva nakulaśca kurūdvaha ,
samādheyāstvayā vīra tvayyadya kuladhūrgatā.
15. bhīmasenaarjunau ca eva nakulaḥ ca kurūdvaha
samādheyāḥ tvayā vīra tvayi adya kuladhūḥ gatā
15. O upholder of the Kurus, O hero! Bhimasena and Arjuna, and also Nakula, should be kept under control by you. Today, the family's burden has fallen upon you.
श्वश्रूश्वशुरयोः पादाञ्शुश्रूषन्ती वने त्वहम् ।
गान्धारीसहिता वत्स्ये तापसी मलपङ्किनी ॥१६॥
16. śvaśrūśvaśurayoḥ pādāñśuśrūṣantī vane tvaham ,
gāndhārīsahitā vatsye tāpasī malapaṅkinī.
16. śvaśrūśvaśurayoḥ pādān śuśrūṣantī vane tu
aham gāndhārīsahitā vatsye tāpasī malapaṅkinī
16. But I, serving the feet of my mother-in-law and father-in-law, accompanied by (queen) Gandhari, and stained with dirt, shall dwell in the forest as an ascetic woman.
एवमुक्तः स धर्मात्मा भ्रातृभिः सहितो वशी ।
विषादमगमत्तीव्रं न च किंचिदुवाच ह ॥१७॥
17. evamuktaḥ sa dharmātmā bhrātṛbhiḥ sahito vaśī ,
viṣādamagamattīvraṁ na ca kiṁciduvāca ha.
17. evam uktaḥ saḥ dharmātmā bhrātṛbhiḥ sahitaḥ vaśī
viṣādam agamat tīvram na ca kiñcit uvāca ha
17. Thus addressed, that self-controlled one of righteous soul (dharma), accompanied by his brothers, fell into intense despondency and indeed said nothing.
स मुहूर्तमिव ध्यात्वा धर्मपुत्रो युधिष्ठिरः ।
उवाच मातरं दीनश्चिन्ताशोकपरायणः ॥१८॥
18. sa muhūrtamiva dhyātvā dharmaputro yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ,
uvāca mātaraṁ dīnaścintāśokaparāyaṇaḥ.
18. saḥ muhūrtam iva dhyātvā dharmaputraḥ yudhiṣṭhiraḥ
uvāca mātaram dīnaḥ cintāśokaparāyaṇaḥ
18. dharmaputraḥ yudhiṣṭhiraḥ saḥ muhūrtam iva
dhyātvā dīnaḥ cintāśokaparāyaṇaḥ mātaram uvāca
18. Yudhishthira, the son of natural law (dharma), having reflected for a moment, spoke to his mother, dejected and overwhelmed by worry and grief.
किमिदं ते व्यवसितं नैवं त्वं वक्तुमर्हसि ।
न त्वामभ्यनुजानामि प्रसादं कर्तुमर्हसि ॥१९॥
19. kimidaṁ te vyavasitaṁ naivaṁ tvaṁ vaktumarhasi ,
na tvāmabhyanujānāmi prasādaṁ kartumarhasi.
19. kim idam te vyavasitam na evam tvam vaktum arhasi
na tvām abhyanujānāmi prasādam kartum arhasi
19. te idam kim vyavasitam? tvam evam vaktum na arhasi.
aham tvām na abhyanujānāmi.
prasādam kartum arhasi.
19. What is this resolve of yours? You should not speak in this manner. I do not permit you to do this; please show me your favor.
व्यरोचयः पुरा ह्यस्मानुत्साह्य प्रियदर्शने ।
विदुराया वचोभिस्त्वमस्मान्न त्यक्तुमर्हसि ॥२०॥
20. vyarocayaḥ purā hyasmānutsāhya priyadarśane ,
vidurāyā vacobhistvamasmānna tyaktumarhasi.
20. vi arocayaḥ purā hi asmān utsāhya priyadarśane
vidurāya vacobhiḥ tvam asmān na tyaktum arhasi
20. priyadarśane! purā hi tvam asmān utsāhya (ca) vidurāya vacobhiḥ (ca) vi arocayaḥ.
(ataḥ) tvam asmān tyaktum na arhasi.
20. O beautiful one, in the past you indeed delighted us by encouraging us through the words of Vidura; you should not abandon us now.
निहत्य पृथिवीपालान्राज्यं प्राप्तमिदं मया ।
तव प्रज्ञामुपश्रुत्य वासुदेवान्नरर्षभात् ॥२१॥
21. nihatya pṛthivīpālānrājyaṁ prāptamidaṁ mayā ,
tava prajñāmupaśrutya vāsudevānnararṣabhāt.
21. nihatya pṛthivīpālān rājyam prāptam idam mayā
tava prajñām upaśrutya vāsudevāt nararṣabhāt
21. mayā pṛthivīpālān nihatya,
tava prajñām vāsudevāt nararṣabhāt (ca) upaśrutya,
idam rājyam prāptam.
21. This kingdom was obtained by me after killing the rulers of the earth, having listened to your wisdom and that of Vasudeva, the greatest of men.
क्व सा बुद्धिरियं चाद्य भवत्या या श्रुता मया ।
क्षत्रधर्मे स्थितिं ह्युक्त्वा तस्याश्चलितुमिच्छसि ॥२२॥
22. kva sā buddhiriyaṁ cādya bhavatyā yā śrutā mayā ,
kṣatradharme sthitiṁ hyuktvā tasyāścalitumicchasi.
22. kva sā buddhiḥ iyam ca adya bhavatyā yā śrutā mayā
kṣatradharme sthitim hi uktvā tasyāḥ calitum icchasi
22. adya kva sā ca iyam buddhiḥ yā mayā bhavatyā śrutā? hi kṣatradharme sthitim uktvā tasyāḥ calitum icchasi.
22. Where is that resolve of yours now, which I heard from you? For after having declared your adherence to the warrior's constitution (dharma), you now wish to deviate from it.
अस्मानुत्सृज्य राज्यं च स्नुषां चेमां यशस्विनीम् ।
कथं वत्स्यसि शून्येषु वनेष्वम्ब प्रसीद मे ॥२३॥
23. asmānutsṛjya rājyaṁ ca snuṣāṁ cemāṁ yaśasvinīm ,
kathaṁ vatsyasi śūnyeṣu vaneṣvamba prasīda me.
23. asmān utsṛjya rājyam ca snuṣām ca imām yaśasvinīm
katham vatsyasi śūnyeṣu vaneṣu amba prasīda me
23. amba,
asmān rājyam ca imām yaśasvinīm snuṣām ca utsṛjya,
katham śūnyeṣu vaneṣu vatsyasi? me prasīda.
23. O mother, having abandoned us, the kingdom, and this glorious daughter-in-law, how will you dwell in desolate forests? Please be gracious to me.
इति बाष्पकलां वाचं कुन्ती पुत्रस्य शृण्वती ।
जगामैवाश्रुपूर्णाक्षी भीमस्तामिदमब्रवीत् ॥२४॥
24. iti bāṣpakalāṁ vācaṁ kuntī putrasya śṛṇvatī ,
jagāmaivāśrupūrṇākṣī bhīmastāmidamabravīt.
24. iti bāṣpakalām vācam kuntī putrasya śṛṇvatī
jagāma eva aśrupūrṇākṣī bhīmaḥ tām idam abravīt
24. iti putrasya bāṣpakalām vācam śṛṇvatī kuntī aśrupūrṇākṣī eva jagāma.
bhīmaḥ tām idam abravīt.
24. Kuntī, upon hearing her son's tearful words, departed with eyes filled with tears. Then Bhīma said this to her.
यदा राज्यमिदं कुन्ति भोक्तव्यं पुत्रनिर्जितम् ।
प्राप्तव्या राजधर्माश्च तदेयं ते कुतो मतिः ॥२५॥
25. yadā rājyamidaṁ kunti bhoktavyaṁ putranirjitam ,
prāptavyā rājadharmāśca tadeyaṁ te kuto matiḥ.
25. yadā rājyam idam kunti bhoktavyam putranirjitam
prāptavyā rājadharmaḥ ca tadā iyam te kutaḥ matiḥ
25. kunti,
yadā idam putranirjitam rājyam bhoktavyam ca rājadharmaḥ prāptavyā,
tadā te iyam matiḥ kutaḥ?
25. O Kuntī, when this kingdom, conquered by your sons, is to be enjoyed, and the royal duties (dharma) are to be fulfilled, then from where does this intention of yours arise?
किं वयं कारिताः पूर्वं भवत्या पृथिवीक्षयम् ।
कस्य हेतोः परित्यज्य वनं गन्तुमभीप्ससि ॥२६॥
26. kiṁ vayaṁ kāritāḥ pūrvaṁ bhavatyā pṛthivīkṣayam ,
kasya hetoḥ parityajya vanaṁ gantumabhīpsasi.
26. kim vayam kāritāḥ pūrvam bhavatyā pr̥thivīkṣayam
kasya hetoḥ parityajya vanam gantum abhīpsasi
26. Why were we made by you to bring about the destruction of rulers on earth previously? For what reason do you desire to abandon us and go to the forest?
वनाच्चापि किमानीता भवत्या बालका वयम् ।
दुःखशोकसमाविष्टौ माद्रीपुत्राविमौ तथा ॥२७॥
27. vanāccāpi kimānītā bhavatyā bālakā vayam ,
duḥkhaśokasamāviṣṭau mādrīputrāvimau tathā.
27. vanāt ca api kim ānītā bhavatyā bālakā vayam
duḥkhaśoka samāviṣṭau mādrīputrau imau tathā
27. And why were we, as children, brought from the forest by you? Moreover, these two sons of Madri are overwhelmed by sorrow and grief.
प्रसीद मातर्मा गास्त्वं वनमद्य यशस्विनि ।
श्रियं यौधिष्ठिरीं तावद्भुङ्क्ष्व पार्थबलार्जिताम् ॥२८॥
28. prasīda mātarmā gāstvaṁ vanamadya yaśasvini ,
śriyaṁ yaudhiṣṭhirīṁ tāvadbhuṅkṣva pārthabalārjitām.
28. prasīda mātar mā gāḥ tvam vanam adya yaśasvini
śriyam yāudhiṣṭhirīm tāvat bhuṅkṣva pārthabalārjitām
28. Be pleased, Mother! Do not go to the forest today, O glorious one. For now, enjoy the prosperity of Yudhishthira, which was earned by the strength of Arjuna.
इति सा निश्चितैवाथ वनवासकृतक्षणा ।
लालप्यतां बहुविधं पुत्राणां नाकरोद्वचः ॥२९॥
29. iti sā niścitaivātha vanavāsakṛtakṣaṇā ,
lālapyatāṁ bahuvidhaṁ putrāṇāṁ nākarodvacaḥ.
29. iti sā niścitā eva atha vanavāsakr̥takṣaṇā
lālapyatām bahuvidham putrāṇām na akarot vacaḥ
29. Thus, she, who was indeed resolved and had fixed her mind on living in the forest, then did not heed the varied pleas of her sons.
द्रौपदी चान्वयाच्छ्वश्रूं विषण्णवदना तदा ।
वनवासाय गच्छन्तीं रुदती भद्रया सह ॥३०॥
30. draupadī cānvayācchvaśrūṁ viṣaṇṇavadanā tadā ,
vanavāsāya gacchantīṁ rudatī bhadrayā saha.
30. draupadī ca anvayat śvaśrūm viṣaṇṇa-vadanā tadā
vana-vāsāya gacchantīm rudatī bhadrayā saha
30. draupadī ca viṣaṇṇa-vadanā rudatī bhadrayā saha
tadā śvaśrūm vana-vāsāya gacchantīm anvayat
30. Draupadi, with a sad face and weeping along with Bhadra, then followed her mother-in-law, who was going for residence in the forest.
सा पुत्रान्रुदतः सर्वान्मुहुर्मुहुरवेक्षती ।
जगामैव महाप्राज्ञा वनाय कृतनिश्चया ॥३१॥
31. sā putrānrudataḥ sarvānmuhurmuhuravekṣatī ,
jagāmaiva mahāprājñā vanāya kṛtaniścayā.
31. sā putrān rudataḥ sarvān muhuḥ muhuḥ avekṣatī
jagāma eva mahā-prājñā vanāya kṛta-niścayā
31. sā mahā-prājñā kṛta-niścayā muhuḥ muhuḥ rudataḥ
sarvān putrān avekṣatī eva vanāya jagāma
31. She, the very wise one, repeatedly looking at all her weeping sons, indeed went to the forest, having made a firm decision.
अन्वयुः पाण्डवास्तां तु सभृत्यान्तःपुरास्तदा ।
ततः प्रमृज्य साश्रूणि पुत्रान्वचनमब्रवीत् ॥३२॥
32. anvayuḥ pāṇḍavāstāṁ tu sabhṛtyāntaḥpurāstadā ,
tataḥ pramṛjya sāśrūṇi putrānvacanamabravīt.

32. But the Pāṇḍavas, along with their servants and inner household, then followed her. Thereafter, having wiped away her tears, she spoke these words to her sons.
