असुरस्तारको नाम त्वया दत्तवरः प्रभो ।
सुरानृषींश्च क्लिश्नाति वधस्तस्य विधीयताम् ॥१॥

The gods said: "O Lord, the demon named Tāraka, to whom a boon was granted by you, is tormenting the gods and the sages. Let his destruction be arranged."
तस्माद्भयं समुत्पन्नमस्माकं वै पितामह ।
परित्रायस्व नो देव न ह्यन्या गतिरस्ति नः ॥२॥

2. tasmādbhayaṁ samutpannamasmākaṁ vai pitāmaha ,
paritrāyasva no deva na hyanyā gatirasti naḥ.

2.
O Grandfather, O God, great fear has indeed arisen for us from him. Please protect us, for truly, there is no other recourse for us.
ब्रह्मोवाच ।
समोऽहं सर्वभूतानामधर्मं नेह रोचये ।
हन्यतां तारकः क्षिप्रं सुरर्षिगणबाधकः ॥३॥

3. brahmovāca ,
samo'haṁ sarvabhūtānāmadharmaṁ neha rocaye ,
hanyatāṁ tārakaḥ kṣipraṁ surarṣigaṇabādhakaḥ.

brahmā uvāca samaḥ aham sarvabhūtānām adharmam na iha

brahmā uvāca aham sarvabhūtānām samaḥ iha adharmam na

Brahmā said: "I am impartial to all beings, and I do not approve of injustice (adharma) here. Let Tāraka, who obstructs the hosts of gods and sages, be killed swiftly."
वेदा धर्माश्च नोत्सादं गच्छेयुः सुरसत्तमाः ।
विहितं पूर्वमेवात्र मया वै व्येतु वो ज्वरः ॥४॥

4. vedā dharmāśca notsādaṁ gaccheyuḥ surasattamāḥ ,
vihitaṁ pūrvamevātra mayā vai vyetu vo jvaraḥ.

vedāḥ dharmāḥ ca na utsādam gaccheyuḥ surasattamāḥ

surasattamāḥ vedāḥ ca dharmāḥ utsādam na gaccheyuḥ

4.
O best of gods, the Vedas and the natural laws (dharma) must not perish! This has indeed been ordained by me beforehand. Let your anxiety depart.
देवा ऊचुः ।
वरदानाद्भगवतो दैतेयो बलगर्वितः ।
देवैर्न शक्यते हन्तुं स कथं प्रशमं व्रजेत् ॥५॥

5. devā ūcuḥ ,

The gods said: "Due to the boon granted by the revered (Bhagavat), the demon (Daiteya) is arrogant with power. He cannot be killed by the gods; how then can he be brought to an end?"
स हि नैव स्म देवानां नासुराणां न रक्षसाम् ।
वध्यः स्यामिति जग्राह वरं त्वत्तः पितामह ॥६॥

6. sa hi naiva sma devānāṁ nāsurāṇāṁ na rakṣasām ,
vadhyaḥ syāmiti jagrāha varaṁ tvattaḥ pitāmaha.

saḥ hi na eva sma devānām na asurāṇām na rakṣasām

pitāmaha saḥ hi tvattaḥ varam jagrāha iti

O Grandfather, he indeed obtained a boon from you, saying, "I shall not be killable by gods, nor by asuras, nor by rākṣasas."
देवाश्च शप्ता रुद्राण्या प्रजोच्छेदे पुरा कृते ।
न भविष्यति वोऽपत्यमिति सर्वजगत्पते ॥७॥

7. devāśca śaptā rudrāṇyā prajocchede purā kṛte ,
na bhaviṣyati vo'patyamiti sarvajagatpate.

O Lord of all worlds! Formerly, regarding the cessation of progeny, the gods were cursed by Rudrāṇī, who declared, 'You shall have no offspring.'
ब्रह्मोवाच ।
हुताशनो न तत्रासीच्छापकाले सुरोत्तमाः ।
स उत्पादयितापत्यं वधार्थं त्रिदशद्विषाम् ॥८॥
हुताशनो न तत्रासीच्छापकाले सुरोत्तमाः ।
स उत्पादयितापत्यं वधार्थं त्रिदशद्विषाम् ॥८॥
8. brahmovāca ,
hutāśano na tatrāsīcchāpakāle surottamāḥ ,
sa utpādayitāpatyaṁ vadhārthaṁ tridaśadviṣām.

sa utpādayitāpatyaṁ vadhārthaṁ tridaśadviṣām.

brahmā uvāca hutāśanaḥ na tatra āsīt śāpakāle sura_uttamāḥ
saḥ utpādayitā apatyam vadha_artham tridaśa_dviṣām

brahmā uvāca he sura_uttamāḥ hutāśanaḥ śāpakāle na tatra
āsīt saḥ tridaśa_dviṣām vadha_artham apatyam utpādayitā

8.
Brahmā said: 'O best of gods! Fire (Agni) was not present at the time of the curse. He will produce progeny for the destruction of the enemies of the gods.'
तद्वै सर्वानतिक्रम्य देवदानवराक्षसान् ।
मानुषानथ गन्धर्वान्नागानथ च पक्षिणः ॥९॥
मानुषानथ गन्धर्वान्नागानथ च पक्षिणः ॥९॥
9. tadvai sarvānatikramya devadānavarākṣasān ,
mānuṣānatha gandharvānnāgānatha ca pakṣiṇaḥ.

tat vai sarvān atikramya deva_dānava_rākṣasān
mānuṣān atha gandharvān nāgān atha ca pakṣiṇaḥ
mānuṣān atha gandharvān nāgān atha ca pakṣiṇaḥ

tat vai sarvān deva_dānava_rākṣasān mānuṣān atha
gandharvān nāgān atha ca pakṣiṇaḥ atikramya
gandharvān nāgān atha ca pakṣiṇaḥ atikramya
9.
Indeed, that one (the offspring) will surpass all gods, Dānavas, Rākṣasas, humans, Gandharvas, Nāgas, and birds.
अस्त्रेणामोघपातेन शक्त्या तं घातयिष्यति ।
यतो वो भयमुत्पन्नं ये चान्ये सुरशत्रवः ॥१०॥

10. astreṇāmoghapātena śaktyā taṁ ghātayiṣyati ,
yato vo bhayamutpannaṁ ye cānye suraśatravaḥ.
yato vo bhayamutpannaṁ ye cānye suraśatravaḥ.
10.
astreṇa amogha_pātena śaktyā tam ghātayiṣyati
yataḥ vaḥ bhayam utpannam ye ca anye sura_śatravaḥ
yataḥ vaḥ bhayam utpannam ye ca anye sura_śatravaḥ
10.
saḥ astreṇa amogha_pātena śaktyā tam ghātayiṣyati
yataḥ vaḥ bhayam utpannam ye ca anye sura_śatravaḥ ca
yataḥ vaḥ bhayam utpannam ye ca anye sura_śatravaḥ ca
10.
With an unfailing weapon and his spear (śakti), he will kill that one from whom fear has arisen for you, as well as any other enemies of the gods.
सनातनो हि संकल्पः काम इत्यभिधीयते ।
रुद्रस्य तेजः प्रस्कन्नमग्नौ निपतितं च तत् ॥११॥

11. sanātano hi saṁkalpaḥ kāma ityabhidhīyate ,
rudrasya tejaḥ praskannamagnau nipatitaṁ ca tat.
rudrasya tejaḥ praskannamagnau nipatitaṁ ca tat.
11.
sanātanaḥ hi saṅkalpaḥ kāmaḥ iti abhidhīyate
rudrasya tejaḥ praskannam agnau nipatitam ca tat
rudrasya tejaḥ praskannam agnau nipatitam ca tat
11.
sanātanaḥ saṅkalpaḥ hi kāmaḥ iti abhidhīyate
tat rudrasya tejaḥ praskannam ca agnau nipatitam
tat rudrasya tejaḥ praskannam ca agnau nipatitam
11.
Indeed, this eternal resolve is called desire (kāma). And that divine energy (tejas) of Rudra, having fallen, landed in the fire.
तत्तेजोऽग्निर्महद्भूतं द्वितीयमिव पावकम् ।
वधार्थं देवशत्रूणां गङ्गायां जनयिष्यति ॥१२॥

12. tattejo'gnirmahadbhūtaṁ dvitīyamiva pāvakam ,
vadhārthaṁ devaśatrūṇāṁ gaṅgāyāṁ janayiṣyati.
vadhārthaṁ devaśatrūṇāṁ gaṅgāyāṁ janayiṣyati.
12.
tat tejaḥ agniḥ mahat bhūtam dvitīyam iva pāvakam
vadhārtham devaśatrūṇām gaṅgāyām janayiṣyati
vadhārtham devaśatrūṇām gaṅgāyām janayiṣyati
12.
tat tejaḥ agniḥ mahat bhūtam dvitīyam pāvakam
iva devaśatrūṇām vadhārtham gaṅgāyām janayiṣyati
iva devaśatrūṇām vadhārtham gaṅgāyām janayiṣyati
12.
That great fiery energy (tejas) of his, which is like a second Agni, will create (a child) in the Gaṅgā for the purpose of destroying the enemies of the gods.
स तु नावाप तं शापं नष्टः स हुतभुक्तदा ।
तस्माद्वो भयहृद्देवाः समुत्पत्स्यति पावकिः ॥१३॥
तस्माद्वो भयहृद्देवाः समुत्पत्स्यति पावकिः ॥१३॥
13. sa tu nāvāpa taṁ śāpaṁ naṣṭaḥ sa hutabhuktadā ,
tasmādvo bhayahṛddevāḥ samutpatsyati pāvakiḥ.
tasmādvo bhayahṛddevāḥ samutpatsyati pāvakiḥ.

sa tu na avāpa tam śāpam naṣṭaḥ sa hutabhuk tadā
tasmāt vaḥ bhayahṛt devāḥ samutpatsyati pāvakiḥ
tasmāt vaḥ bhayahṛt devāḥ samutpatsyati pāvakiḥ
13.
sa tu tam śāpam na avāpa sa hutabhuk tadā naṣṭaḥ
tasmāt vaḥ bhayahṛt pāvakiḥ devāḥ samutpatsyati
tasmāt vaḥ bhayahṛt pāvakiḥ devāḥ samutpatsyati
13.
But he (Agni) did not incur that curse; the fire-god was then lost. Therefore, O gods, a son of fire (Pāvaki), who will remove your fear, will arise.
अन्विष्यतां वै ज्वलनस्तथा चाद्य नियुज्यताम् ।
तारकस्य वधोपायः कथितो वै मयानघाः ॥१४॥

14. anviṣyatāṁ vai jvalanastathā cādya niyujyatām ,
tārakasya vadhopāyaḥ kathito vai mayānaghāḥ.
tārakasya vadhopāyaḥ kathito vai mayānaghāḥ.

anviṣyatām vai jvalanaḥ tathā ca adya niyujyatām
tārakasya vadhopāyaḥ kathitaḥ vai mayā anaghāḥ
tārakasya vadhopāyaḥ kathitaḥ vai mayā anaghāḥ

jvalanaḥ vai anviṣyatām tathā ca adya niyujyatām
anaghāḥ tārakasya vadhopāyaḥ vai mayā kathitaḥ
anaghāḥ tārakasya vadhopāyaḥ vai mayā kathitaḥ
14.
Indeed, let the fire-god be sought, and let him be engaged today. O sinless ones, the method for slaying Tāraka has indeed been told by me.
न हि तेजस्विनां शापास्तेजःसु प्रभवन्ति वै ।
बलान्यतिबलं प्राप्य नबलानि भवन्ति वै ॥१५॥
बलान्यतिबलं प्राप्य नबलानि भवन्ति वै ॥१५॥
15. na hi tejasvināṁ śāpāstejaḥsu prabhavanti vai ,
balānyatibalaṁ prāpya nabalāni bhavanti vai.
balānyatibalaṁ prāpya nabalāni bhavanti vai.

na hi tejasvinām śāpāḥ tejaḥsu prabhavanti vai
balāni atibalam prāpya nabalāni bhavanti vai
balāni atibalam prāpya nabalāni bhavanti vai
15.
Indeed, the curses of those endowed with spiritual power do not prevail against others who also possess such power. For (lesser) powers, upon encountering a superior power, truly become powerless.
हन्यादवध्यान्वरदानपि चैव तपस्विनः ।
संकल्पाभिरुचिः कामः सनातनतमोऽनलः ॥१६॥
संकल्पाभिरुचिः कामः सनातनतमोऽनलः ॥१६॥
16. hanyādavadhyānvaradānapi caiva tapasvinaḥ ,
saṁkalpābhiruciḥ kāmaḥ sanātanatamo'nalaḥ.
saṁkalpābhiruciḥ kāmaḥ sanātanatamo'nalaḥ.
16.
hanyāt avadhyān varadān api ca eva tapasvinaḥ
saṅkalpābhiruciḥ kāmaḥ sanātanatamaḥ analaḥ
saṅkalpābhiruciḥ kāmaḥ sanātanatamaḥ analaḥ
16.
Desire (kāma), whose delight is in (its own) resolve, is the most ancient fire. It would indeed slay even those who are inviolable, those who grant boons, and the ascetics.
जगत्पतिरनिर्देश्यः सर्वगः सर्वभावनः ।
हृच्छयः सर्वभूतानां ज्येष्ठो रुद्रादपि प्रभुः ॥१७॥
हृच्छयः सर्वभूतानां ज्येष्ठो रुद्रादपि प्रभुः ॥१७॥
17. jagatpatiranirdeśyaḥ sarvagaḥ sarvabhāvanaḥ ,
hṛcchayaḥ sarvabhūtānāṁ jyeṣṭho rudrādapi prabhuḥ.
hṛcchayaḥ sarvabhūtānāṁ jyeṣṭho rudrādapi prabhuḥ.
17.
jagatpatiḥ anirdeśyaḥ sarvagaḥ sarvabhāvanaḥ
hṛcchayaḥ sarvabhūtānām jyeṣṭhaḥ rudrāt api prabhuḥ
hṛcchayaḥ sarvabhūtānām jyeṣṭhaḥ rudrāt api prabhuḥ
17.
He is the lord of the world, indescribable, omnipresent, and the creator of all. Dwelling in the hearts of all beings, he is the eldest, the supreme master, even superior to Rudra.
अन्विष्यतां स तु क्षिप्रं तेजोराशिर्हुताशनः ।
स वो मनोगतं कामं देवः संपादयिष्यति ॥१८॥
स वो मनोगतं कामं देवः संपादयिष्यति ॥१८॥
18. anviṣyatāṁ sa tu kṣipraṁ tejorāśirhutāśanaḥ ,
sa vo manogataṁ kāmaṁ devaḥ saṁpādayiṣyati.
sa vo manogataṁ kāmaṁ devaḥ saṁpādayiṣyati.
18.
anviṣyatām saḥ tu kṣipram tejorāśiḥ hutāśanaḥ
saḥ vaḥ manogatam kāmam devaḥ saṃpādayiṣyati
saḥ vaḥ manogatam kāmam devaḥ saṃpādayiṣyati
18.
Let that Agni, who is a mass of splendor, be quickly sought. That god will fulfill your heart's desire.
एतद्वाक्यमुपश्रुत्य ततो देवा महात्मनः ।
जग्मुः संसिद्धसंकल्पाः पर्येषन्तो विभावसुम् ॥१९॥

19. etadvākyamupaśrutya tato devā mahātmanaḥ ,
jagmuḥ saṁsiddhasaṁkalpāḥ paryeṣanto vibhāvasum.
jagmuḥ saṁsiddhasaṁkalpāḥ paryeṣanto vibhāvasum.
19.
etad vākyam upaśrutya tataḥ devāḥ mahātmanaḥ
jagmuḥ saṃsiddhasaṅkalpāḥ paryeṣantaḥ vibhāvasum
jagmuḥ saṃsiddhasaṅkalpāḥ paryeṣantaḥ vibhāvasum
19.
devāḥ mahātmanaḥ etad vākyam upaśrutya
saṃsiddhasaṅkalpāḥ tataḥ vibhāvasum paryeṣantaḥ jagmuḥ
saṃsiddhasaṅkalpāḥ tataḥ vibhāvasum paryeṣantaḥ jagmuḥ
19.
Having heard these words, the great-souled gods, their desires fulfilled, then set out searching for Agni.
ततस्त्रैलोक्यमृषयो व्यचिन्वन्त सुरैः सह ।
काङ्क्षन्तो दर्शनं वह्नेः सर्वे तद्गतमानसाः ॥२०॥
काङ्क्षन्तो दर्शनं वह्नेः सर्वे तद्गतमानसाः ॥२०॥
20. tatastrailokyamṛṣayo vyacinvanta suraiḥ saha ,
kāṅkṣanto darśanaṁ vahneḥ sarve tadgatamānasāḥ.
kāṅkṣanto darśanaṁ vahneḥ sarve tadgatamānasāḥ.
20.
tataḥ trailokyam ṛṣayaḥ vyacinvananta suraiḥ saha
kāṅkṣantaḥ darśanam vahneḥ sarve tadgatamanasāḥ
kāṅkṣantaḥ darśanam vahneḥ sarve tadgatamanasāḥ
20.
tataḥ ṛṣayaḥ sarve suraiḥ saha tadgatamanasāḥ
vahneḥ darśanam kāṅkṣantaḥ trailokyam vyacinvananta
vahneḥ darśanam kāṅkṣantaḥ trailokyam vyacinvananta
20.
Then, the sages, along with the gods, searched the three worlds, all of them with their minds absorbed in that quest, longing for a glimpse of Agni.
परेण तपसा युक्ताः श्रीमन्तो लोकविश्रुताः ।
लोकानन्वचरन्सिद्धाः सर्व एव भृगूद्वह ।
नष्टमात्मनि संलीनं नाधिजग्मुर्हुताशनम् ॥२१॥
लोकानन्वचरन्सिद्धाः सर्व एव भृगूद्वह ।
नष्टमात्मनि संलीनं नाधिजग्मुर्हुताशनम् ॥२१॥
21. pareṇa tapasā yuktāḥ śrīmanto lokaviśrutāḥ ,
lokānanvacaransiddhāḥ sarva eva bhṛgūdvaha ,
naṣṭamātmani saṁlīnaṁ nādhijagmurhutāśanam.
lokānanvacaransiddhāḥ sarva eva bhṛgūdvaha ,
naṣṭamātmani saṁlīnaṁ nādhijagmurhutāśanam.
21.
pareṇa tapasā yuktāḥ śrīmantaḥ
lokaviśrutāḥ lokān anvacaran siddhāḥ
sarve eva bhṛgūdvaha naṣṭam ātmani
saṃlīnam na adhijagmuḥ hutāśanam
lokaviśrutāḥ lokān anvacaran siddhāḥ
sarve eva bhṛgūdvaha naṣṭam ātmani
saṃlīnam na adhijagmuḥ hutāśanam
21.
bhṛgūdvaha pareṇa tapasā yuktāḥ

O descendant of Bhṛgu, all those glorious, world-renowned perfected ones (siddhas), endowed with supreme austerity (tapas), searched throughout the worlds. They did not find Agni, who was lost and hidden within his own essential nature (ātman).

जलेचरः क्लान्तमनास्तेजसाग्नेः प्रदीपितः ।

Then, a frog, an aquatic creature whose mind was weary, having been illuminated by the splendor of Agni and risen from the lowest level of Rasātala, spoke to the gods, who were filled with great terror and ardently desired to see Agni.
रसातलतले देवा वसत्यग्निरिति प्रभो ।
संतापादिह संप्राप्तः पावकप्रभवादहम् ॥२३॥

O gods, Agni dwells in the lowest realm (rasātala), O lord. Therefore, I have arrived here, distressed by the heat originating from that fire.
स संसुप्तो जले देवा भगवान्हव्यवाहनः ।
अपः संसृज्य तेजोभिस्तेन संतापिता वयम् ॥२४॥

O gods, that divine Agni, the carrier of oblations, deeply asleep in the water, has permeated the waters with his fiery energies. By that, we have been intensely heated.
तस्य दर्शनमिष्टं वो यदि देवा विभावसोः ।
तत्रैनमभिगच्छध्वं कार्यं वो यदि वह्निना ॥२५॥

25. tasya darśanamiṣṭaṁ vo yadi devā vibhāvasoḥ ,

O gods, if you desire to behold that resplendent one (Vibhāvasu, an epithet of Agni), then you should go to him there. And if you have any business to transact with Agni, (go to him).
गम्यतां साधयिष्यामो वयं ह्यग्निभयात्सुराः ।
एतावदुक्त्वा मण्डूकस्त्वरितो जलमाविशत् ॥२६॥

“Let us depart; we shall manage (to save ourselves), for we are fearful of Agni, O gods.” Having spoken thus, the frog swiftly entered the water.

Agni (hutāśana) then indeed understood the malice of the frog. Having approached it, he cursed it, saying, "Indeed, you shall not perceive tastes."

Having inflicted that curse upon the frog, Agni (pāvaka) went elsewhere to reside. The powerful (vibhu) one did not reveal himself to the gods.
देवास्त्वनुग्रहं चक्रुर्मण्डूकानां भृगूद्वह ।
यत्तच्छृणु महाबाहो गदतो मम सर्वशः ॥२९॥

But the gods then bestowed a favor upon the frogs, O descendant of Bhrigu. O mighty-armed one, listen to all that from me as I speak.

सरस्वतीं बहुविधां यूयमुच्चारयिष्यथ ॥३०॥

The gods said: "Even though you are tongueless due to Agni's curse, and deprived of the perception of taste, you shall utter various kinds of speech (sarasvatī)."
बिलवासगतांश्चैव निरादानानचेतसः ।
गतासूनपि वः शुष्कान्भूमिः संधारयिष्यति ।
तमोगतायामपि च निशायां विचरिष्यथ ॥३१॥

31. bilavāsagatāṁścaiva nirādānānacetasaḥ ,

31.
Those of you who have taken refuge in caves, who are without sustenance and devoid of consciousness, and even those among you who are lifeless and dried up – the earth will sustain you. And even during a night fully enveloped in darkness, you will continue to roam.
इत्युक्त्वा तांस्ततो देवाः पुनरेव महीमिमाम् ।
परीयुर्ज्वलनस्यार्थे न चाविन्दन्हुताशनम् ॥३२॥

Having spoken thus, the gods then again circled this earth in search of the fire (jvalana), but they did not find the sacred fire (hutāśana).
अथ तान्द्विरदः कश्चित्सुरेन्द्रद्विरदोपमः ।
अश्वत्थस्थोऽग्निरित्येवं प्राह देवान्भृगूद्वह ॥३३॥

Then, a certain elephant, comparable to the elephant of the lord of gods (surendradvirada), addressed the gods, O descendant of Bhṛgu, saying, 'The fire is located in the Aśvattha tree.'
शशाप ज्वलनः सर्वान्द्विरदान्क्रोधमूर्छितः ।
प्रतीपा भवतां जिह्वा भवित्रीति भृगूद्वह ॥३४॥

The fire (jvalana), overcome with rage, cursed all the elephants, saying, 'Your tongues shall be turned backward,' O descendant of Bhṛgu.

प्रविवेश शमीगर्भमथ वह्निः सुषुप्सया ॥३५॥

Having spoken thus, Fire, indicated by an elephant, emerged from the "aśvattha" tree. Then, that fire entered the hollow of a "śamī" tree with a desire to sleep.
अनुग्रहं तु नागानां यं चक्रुः शृणु तं प्रभो ।
देवा भृगुकुलश्रेष्ठ प्रीताः सत्यपराक्रमाः ॥३६॥

36. anugrahaṁ tu nāgānāṁ yaṁ cakruḥ śṛṇu taṁ prabho ,

O Lord! O best of Bhṛgu's lineage! Listen to that favor which the gods, being pleased and truly valorous, bestowed upon the nāgas.

वाचं चोच्चारयिष्यध्वमुच्चैरव्यञ्जिताक्षरम् ।

37.
The gods said: 'Even with an inverted tongue, you will consume all kinds of food. And you will utter speech loudly, with indistinct syllables.' Having said this, the celestial beings again followed the fire.

शुकेन ख्यापितो विप्र तं देवाः समुपाद्रवन् ॥३८॥

O Brahmin, when Fire emerged from the "aśvattha" tree and had entered the hollow of the "śamī" tree, Śuka revealed its location, and the gods rushed towards it.
शशाप शुकमग्निस्तु वाग्विहीनो भविष्यसि ।
जिह्वां चावर्तयामास तस्यापि हुतभुक्तदा ॥३९॥

Agni, however, cursed Śuka, saying, "You will be bereft of speech!" Then, the fire god also twisted his tongue.

However, seeing the fire, the gods, filled with compassion, said to Śuka: "O bird, you will not be utterly bereft of speech."
आवृत्तजिह्वस्य सतो वाक्यं कान्तं भविष्यति ।

For one whose tongue is twisted, speech will become charming, like the indistinct, yet wonderful, utterance of a growing child.
इत्युक्त्वा तं शमीगर्भे वह्निमालक्ष्य देवताः ।

Having said this, the deities, observing fire within the hollow of the śamī tree, made that very spot a sacred dwelling, even for all rituals.
ततःप्रभृति चाप्यग्निः शमीगर्भेषु दृश्यते ।

From that time onwards, fire is observed within the śamī trees. Similarly, humans also adopted a method for generating it.
आपो रसातले यास्तु संसृष्टाश्चित्रभानुना ।
ताः पर्वतप्रस्रवणैरूष्मां मुञ्चन्ति भार्गव ।
पावकेनाधिशयता संतप्तास्तस्य तेजसा ॥४४॥

O Bhārgava, those waters that mingled with Agni (fire) in the netherworld, having been thoroughly heated by the power of that fire residing there, now release steam through mountain springs.
ततोऽग्निर्देवता दृष्ट्वा बभूव व्यथितस्तदा ।
किमागमनमित्येवं तानपृच्छत पावकः ॥४५॥

Thereupon, Agni, having seen the deities, became distressed. "What is the purpose of your arrival?" thus the fire asked them.
तमूचुर्विबुधाः सर्वे ते चैव परमर्षयः ।
त्वां नियोक्ष्यामहे कार्ये तद्भवान्कर्तुमर्हति ।
कृते च तस्मिन्भविता तवापि सुमहान्गुणः ॥४६॥

All the deities and those great sages replied to him, "We will appoint you to a task, and you, sir, should undertake it. When that is accomplished, a very great benefit will accrue to you as well."
अग्निरुवाच ।
ब्रूत यद्भवतां कार्यं सर्वं कर्तास्मि तत्सुराः ।
भवतां हि नियोज्योऽहं मा वोऽत्रास्तु विचारणा ॥४७॥

Agni spoke: "O gods, tell me what your task is; I will certainly accomplish all of it. Indeed, I am at your command, so let there be no hesitation (vicāraṇā) on your part about this."

The gods said: "An asura (asura) named Tāraka, made arrogant by a boon from Brahmā, harasses us with his power. Let his death be brought about."

O dear one, O Pāvaka (pāvaka)! Protect these hosts of gods, and likewise the hosts of Prajāpatis, and also the great and fortunate sages.
अपत्यं तेजसा युक्तं प्रवीरं जनय प्रभो ।
यद्भयं नोऽसुरात्तस्मान्नाशयेद्धव्यवाहन ॥५०॥

O Lord (prabhu), O carrier of oblations (havyavāhana)! Generate a powerful offspring, a great hero, who can destroy the fear we have from that asura (asura).
शप्तानां नो महादेव्या नान्यदस्ति परायणम् ।
अन्यत्र भवतो वीर्यं तस्मात्त्रायस्व नस्ततः ॥५१॥

For us, who are cursed by the great goddess, there is no other refuge. Your prowess is our only resort; therefore, protect us from that fate.

Addressed thus, the venerable Agni (havyakavyabhuk), replied 'So be it.' Then, he, irresistible, went towards the Gaṅgā, the river of Bhagīratha.
तया चाप्यभवन्मिश्रो गर्भश्चास्याभवत्तदा ।
ववृधे स तदा गर्भः कक्षे कृष्णगतिर्यथा ॥५३॥

And he became mingled with her, and then her embryo came into being. That embryo then grew, just as fire spreads rapidly in a dry forest.
तेजसा तस्य गर्भस्य गङ्गा विह्वलचेतना ।
संतापमगमत्तीव्रं सा सोढुं न शशाक ह ॥५४॥

Due to the intense radiance of that embryo, Gaṅgā became distressed in mind. She experienced severe anguish and was indeed unable to endure it.
आहिते ज्वलनेनाथ गर्भे तेजःसमन्विते ।
गङ्गायामसुरः कश्चिद्भैरवं नादमुत्सृजत् ॥५५॥

Then, as the embryo, imbued with effulgence, was deposited by the fire (Agni) into the Gaṅgā, a certain demon (asura) let out a terrifying roar.
अबुद्धापतितेनाथ नादेन विपुलेन सा ।
वित्रस्तोद्भ्रान्तनयना गङ्गा विप्लुतलोचना ।
विसंज्ञा नाशकद्गर्भं संधारयितुमात्मना ॥५६॥

Due to that vast sound, which had fallen upon her unexpectedly, Gaṅgā, with her eyes frightened, bewildered, and overflowing with tears, became senseless and was unable to sustain the embryo within herself (ātmanā).
सा तु तेजःपरीताङ्गी कम्पमाना च जाह्नवी ।
उवाच वचनं विप्र तदा गर्भबलोद्धता ।
न ते शक्तास्मि भगवंस्तेजसोऽस्य विधारणे ॥५७॥

57. sā tu tejaḥparītāṅgī kampamānā ca jāhnavī ,

tu tadā sā jāhnavī tejaḥparītāṅgī ca
kampamānā garbhabaloddhatā vipra
bhagavan vacanam uvāca: "aham te asya
tejasaḥ vidhāraṇe na śaktā asmi"

bhagavan vacanam uvāca: "aham te asya
tejasaḥ vidhāraṇe na śaktā asmi"

But then, Jāhnavī (Gaṅgā), her body permeated by the effulgence, trembling and overcome by the embryo's power, spoke these words: 'O Brahmin (vipra)! O Lord (bhagavan)! I am not capable of holding this effulgence (tejas) within me on your behalf.'
विमूढास्मि कृतानेन तथास्वास्थ्यं कृतं परम् ।
विह्वला चास्मि भगवंस्तेजो नष्टं च मेऽनघ ॥५८॥

58. vimūḍhāsmi kṛtānena tathāsvāsthyaṁ kṛtaṁ param ,

By this (effulgence), I have been rendered utterly bewildered, and great distress has been caused. Moreover, I am overwhelmed, O Lord (bhagavan)! And my own effulgence (tejas) is lost, O Sinless One (anagha)!
धारणे नास्य शक्ताहं गर्भस्य तपतां वर ।
उत्स्रक्ष्येऽहमिमं दुःखान्न तु कामात्कथंचन ॥५९॥

O best among ascetics, I am not capable of bearing this embryo. I shall abandon it out of distress, and by no means due to desire.
न चेतसोऽस्ति संस्पर्शो मम देव विभावसो ।

O divine Vibhāvasu, there is no emotional connection for me. Indeed, O greatly brilliant one, even a very subtle relationship exists only for the sake of calamity.

O Fire-god, whatever here is endowed with good qualities or otherwise, I consider that, along with both what is right (dharma) and what is wrong (adharma), to be exclusively within you.

Then Agni said to her: 'Let this embryo be borne! Indeed, let it be borne! This embryo is endowed with my potency and will bring forth great virtues and auspicious results.'

That best of rivers, being hindered by Agni and also by the gods, then discharged that fetus on Mount Meru, the foremost of mountains.
समर्था धारणे चापि रुद्रतेजःप्रधर्षिता ।
नाशकत्तं तदा गर्भं संधारयितुमोजसा ॥६५॥

Though capable of bearing, and furthermore overwhelmed by the might of Rudra, she then could not retain that fetus by her own power.

दर्शयामास चाग्निस्तां तदा गङ्गां भृगूद्वह ।
पप्रच्छ सरितां श्रेष्ठां कच्चिद्गर्भः सुखोदयः ॥६६॥

She, out of distress, discharged that fetus, which shone with the splendor of a blazing fire. Then, O descendant of Bhṛgu, Agni showed it (the fetus) to Gaṅgā and asked the foremost of rivers, 'Is the birth of the child auspicious?'
कीदृग्वर्णोऽपि वा देवि कीदृग्रूपश्च दृश्यते ।
तेजसा केन वा युक्तः सर्वमेतद्ब्रवीहि मे ॥६७॥

O goddess, what is his color, what is his form, and by what splendor is he endowed? Please tell me all this.

Gaṅgā said: 'That embryo (garbha) is golden in form, indeed, radiant with splendor like you, O fire. He is golden, pure, and luminous, even illuminating the mountain.'
पद्मोत्पलविमिश्राणां ह्रदानामिव शीतलः ।
गन्धोऽस्य स कदम्बानां तुल्यो वै तपतां वर ॥६९॥

His fragrance is cool, like that of lakes mixed with lotuses and lilies, and indeed, it is equal to the fragrance of kadamba flowers, O best of ascetics.

यद्द्रव्यं परिसंसृष्टं पृथिव्यां पर्वतेषु वा ।
तत्सर्वं काञ्चनीभूतं समन्तात्प्रत्यदृश्यत ॥७०॥

By the splendor of that embryo (garbha), like the sun's rays, every substance that came into contact with it, whether on earth or in the mountains, transformed into gold and became visible all around.

He traversed mountains, rivers, and springs. With his radiant energy (tejas), he illuminated the three worlds, including all moving and non-moving beings.

एवमुक्त्वा तु सा देवी तत्रैवान्तरधीयत ॥७२॥

Such is the form of that divine (bhagavān) lord, your son, O Havyavahana (Agni)! He is equal to Sūrya and Vaiśvānara in radiance, and like another moon (soma) in beauty. Having spoken thus, that goddess disappeared right there.
पावकश्चापि तेजस्वी कृत्वा कार्यं दिवौकसाम् ।

And the radiant Pāvaka (Agni), having accomplished the task of the celestials, then went to his desired place, O son of Bhṛgu.

हिरण्यरेता इति वै ऋषिभिर्विबुधैस्तथा ।
पृथिवी च तदा देवी ख्याता वसुमतीति वै ॥७४॥

By these qualities of action (karma), the name of Agni is celebrated in the world as 'Hiraṇyaretas' (Golden-seeded) by the sages (ṛṣis) and the wise (gods). And then, the goddess Earth (pṛthivī) was known as Vasumatī (Rich in treasures).

That greatly effulgent child, born from the fire and carried by Gaṅgā, grew up in the divine reed-forest, possessing a wondrous appearance.

The Kṛttikās saw him, shining with a radiance like the morning sun. Having developed affection for the child, they nourished him with streams of their milk.

Thereupon, he, of supreme splendor, obtained the name Kārttikeya. And because he was 'shed' (skanna), he also became Skanda; and from dwelling in a cave (guhā), he became Guha.

In this way, gold, born as the offspring of Jātavedas (Agni), was produced. There, the Jāmbūnada variety of gold is considered supreme, serving as an ornament even for the gods.

From that time onwards, this 'jātarūpa' (gold) has been so named, because gold is verily the illustrious Agni, the Lord, the prajāpati (lord of creation).

O best among the twice-born (dvija)! Gold is indeed the purest of purifiers. And 'jātarūpa' (gold) is also declared to be of the nature of Agni and Soma.
