मार्कण्डेय उवाच ।
एवं संकथिते कृत्स्ने मोक्षधर्मे युधिष्ठिर ।
दृढं प्रीतमना विप्रो धर्मव्याधमुवाच ह ॥१॥
1. mārkaṇḍeya uvāca ,
evaṁ saṁkathite kṛtsne mokṣadharme yudhiṣṭhira ,
dṛḍhaṁ prītamanā vipro dharmavyādhamuvāca ha.

1. Markandeya said: "Thus, after the entire natural law (dharma) of final liberation (mokṣa) had been thoroughly expounded, O Yudhishthira, the Brahmin, with a greatly pleased mind, indeed spoke to the Dharma-vyādha."
न्याययुक्तमिदं सर्वं भवता परिकीर्तितम् ।
न तेऽस्त्यविदितं किंचिद्धर्मेष्विह हि दृश्यते ॥२॥
2. nyāyayuktamidaṁ sarvaṁ bhavatā parikīrtitam ,
na te'styaviditaṁ kiṁciddharmeṣviha hi dṛśyate.
2. nyāyayuktam idam sarvam bhavatā parikīrtitam na
te asti aviditam kiṃcit dharmeṣu iha hi dṛśyate
2. "All this that has been thoroughly explained by you is indeed logical. Nothing concerning the natural laws (dharma) in this world is unknown to you, for it is clearly evident."
व्याध उवाच ।
प्रत्यक्षं मम यो धर्मस्तं पश्य द्विजसत्तम ।
येन सिद्धिरियं प्राप्ता मया ब्राह्मणपुंगव ॥३॥
3. vyādha uvāca ,
pratyakṣaṁ mama yo dharmastaṁ paśya dvijasattama ,
yena siddhiriyaṁ prāptā mayā brāhmaṇapuṁgava.
3. vyādhaḥ uvāca | pratyakṣam mama yaḥ dharmaḥ tam paśya
dvijasattama | yena siddhiḥ iyam prāptā mayā brāhmaṇapuṅgava
3. The hunter said, "O best among the twice-born (dvija), and foremost among Brahmins, behold my evident intrinsic nature (dharma) through which this accomplishment has been attained by me."
उत्तिष्ठ भगवन्क्षिप्रं प्रविश्याभ्यन्तरं गृहम् ।
द्रष्टुमर्हसि धर्मज्ञ मातरं पितरं च मे ॥४॥
4. uttiṣṭha bhagavankṣipraṁ praviśyābhyantaraṁ gṛham ,
draṣṭumarhasi dharmajña mātaraṁ pitaraṁ ca me.
4. uttiṣṭha bhagavan kṣipram praviśya abhyantaram gṛham
| draṣṭum arhasi dharmajña mātaram pitaram ca me
4. "Arise, O revered sir, quickly! Enter the interior of the house. O knower of natural law (dharma), you should see my mother and father."
मार्कण्डेय उवाच ।
इत्युक्तः स प्रविश्याथ ददर्श परमार्चितम् ।
सौधं हृद्यं चतुःशालमतीव च मनोहरम् ॥५॥
5. mārkaṇḍeya uvāca ,
ityuktaḥ sa praviśyātha dadarśa paramārcitam ,
saudhaṁ hṛdyaṁ catuḥśālamatīva ca manoharam.

paramārcitam | saudham hṛdyam catuḥśālam atīva ca manoharam
5. Mārkaṇḍeya said, "Thus addressed, he then entered and saw a mansion that was supremely adorned, charming, having four halls, and exceedingly beautiful."
देवतागृहसंकाशं दैवतैश्च सुपूजितम् ।
शयनासनसंबाधं गन्धैश्च परमैर्युतम् ॥६॥
6. devatāgṛhasaṁkāśaṁ daivataiśca supūjitam ,
śayanāsanasaṁbādhaṁ gandhaiśca paramairyutam.
6. devatāgṛhasaṃkāśam daivataiḥ ca supūjitam |
śayanāsanasaṃbādham gandhaiḥ ca paramaiḥ yutam
6. It resembled a temple (deva-gṛha), was well-worshipped by deities, filled with beds and seats, and endowed with excellent fragrances.
तत्र शुक्लाम्बरधरौ पितरावस्य पूजितौ ।
कृताहारौ सुतुष्टौ तावुपविष्टौ वरासने ।
धर्मव्याधस्तु तौ दृष्ट्वा पादेषु शिरसापतत् ॥७॥
7. tatra śuklāmbaradharau pitarāvasya pūjitau ,
kṛtāhārau sutuṣṭau tāvupaviṣṭau varāsane ,
dharmavyādhastu tau dṛṣṭvā pādeṣu śirasāpatat.
7. tatra śuklāmbaradharau pitarau asya
pūjitau kṛtāhārau sutuṣṭau tau
upaviṣṭau varāsane dharmavyādhaḥ
tu tau dṛṣṭvā pādeṣu śirasā apatat
7. There, his parents, dressed in white, were seated on an excellent throne, honored, having eaten, and very pleased. When the righteous hunter (dharma-vyādha) saw them, he prostrated himself at their feet.
वृद्धावूचतुः ।
उत्तिष्ठोत्तिष्ठ धर्मज्ञ धर्मस्त्वामभिरक्षतु ।
प्रीतौ स्वस्तव शौचेन दीर्घमायुरवाप्नुहि ।
सत्पुत्रेण त्वया पुत्र नित्यकालं सुपूजितौ ॥८॥
8. vṛddhāvūcatuḥ ,
uttiṣṭhottiṣṭha dharmajña dharmastvāmabhirakṣatu ,
prītau svastava śaucena dīrghamāyuravāpnuhi ,
satputreṇa tvayā putra nityakālaṁ supūjitau.
8. vṛddhau ūcatuḥ uttiṣṭha uttiṣṭha dharmajña
dharmaḥ tvām abhirakṣatu prītau svaḥ
tava śaucena dīrgham āyuḥ avāpnuhi
satputreṇa tvayā putra nityakālam supūjitau
8. The two elders said, "Rise, rise, O knower of righteousness (dharma)! May "dharma" always protect you. We are pleased by your purity; may you attain a long life. O son, we have been continuously well-worshipped by you, our good son."
न तेऽन्यद्दैवतं किंचिद्दैवतेष्वपि वर्तते ।
प्रयतत्वाद्द्विजातीनां दमेनासि समन्वितः ॥९॥
9. na te'nyaddaivataṁ kiṁciddaivateṣvapi vartate ,
prayatatvāddvijātīnāṁ damenāsi samanvitaḥ.
9. na te anyat daivatam kiñcit daivateṣu api vartate
prayatatvāt dvijātīnām damena asi samanvitaḥ
9. For you, there is no other deity, not even among all the divine beings. Due to your diligent service to the twice-born (dvijātī), you are endowed with excellent self-control.
पितुः पितामहा ये च तथैव प्रपितामहाः ।
प्रीतास्ते सततं पुत्र दमेनावां च पूजया ॥१०॥
10. pituḥ pitāmahā ye ca tathaiva prapitāmahāḥ ,
prītāste satataṁ putra damenāvāṁ ca pūjayā.
10. pituḥ pitāmahāḥ ye ca tathā eva prapitāmahāḥ
prītāḥ te satatam putra damena āvām ca pūjayā
10. O son, your father's grandfathers and also your great-grandfathers are always pleased. And we two are pleased by your self-control and devotion (pūjā).
मनसा कर्मणा वाचा शुश्रूषा नैव हीयते ।
न चान्या वितथा बुद्धिर्दृश्यते सांप्रतं तव ॥११॥
11. manasā karmaṇā vācā śuśrūṣā naiva hīyate ,
na cānyā vitathā buddhirdṛśyate sāṁprataṁ tava.
11. manasā karmaṇā vācā śuśrūṣā na eva hīyate na
ca anyā vitathā buddhiḥ dṛśyate sāṃpratam tava
11. Your dutiful service (śuśrūṣā), whether by mind, action (karma), or speech, never falters. Moreover, no other false or misguided intention (buddhi) of yours is apparent at this moment.
जामदग्न्येन रामेण यथा वृद्धौ सुपूजितौ ।
तथा त्वया कृतं सर्वं तद्विशिष्टं च पुत्रक ॥१२॥
12. jāmadagnyena rāmeṇa yathā vṛddhau supūjitau ,
tathā tvayā kṛtaṁ sarvaṁ tadviśiṣṭaṁ ca putraka.
12. jāmadagnyena rāmeṇa yathā vṛddhau supūjitau
tathā tvayā kṛtam sarvam tat viśiṣṭam ca putraka
12. O son, just as Rāma Jāmadagnya respectfully honored his two elders, so too, everything you have done is superior to that.
मार्कण्डेय उवाच ।
ततस्तं ब्राह्मणं ताभ्यां धर्मव्याधो न्यवेदयत् ।
तौ स्वागतेन तं विप्रमर्चयामासतुस्तदा ॥१३॥
13. mārkaṇḍeya uvāca ,
tatastaṁ brāhmaṇaṁ tābhyāṁ dharmavyādho nyavedayat ,
tau svāgatena taṁ vipramarcayāmāsatustadā.
13. mārkaṇḍeyaḥ uvāca tataḥ tam brāhmaṇam tābhyām dharmavyādhaḥ
nyavedayat tau svāgatena tam vipram arcayāmāsatuḥ tadā
13. Mārkaṇḍeya said: Thereupon, the righteous hunter (dharmavyādha) introduced that brahmin to them. At that time, those two honored the brahmin with a welcome.
प्रतिगृह्य च तां पूजां द्विजः पप्रच्छ तावुभौ ।
सपुत्राभ्यां सभृत्याभ्यां कच्चिद्वां कुशलं गृहे ।
अनामयं च वां कच्चित्सदैवेह शरीरयोः ॥१४॥
14. pratigṛhya ca tāṁ pūjāṁ dvijaḥ papraccha tāvubhau ,
saputrābhyāṁ sabhṛtyābhyāṁ kaccidvāṁ kuśalaṁ gṛhe ,
anāmayaṁ ca vāṁ kaccitsadaiveha śarīrayoḥ.
14. pratigṛhya ca tām pūjām dvijaḥ papraccha
tau ubhau saputrābhyām sabhṛtyābhyām
kaccit vām kuśalam gṛhe anāmayam
ca vām kaccit sadā eva iha śarīrayoḥ
14. And having accepted that honor, the brahmin (dvija) asked those two, "Is all well in your household, along with your sons and servants? And are your bodies always free from illness here?"
वृद्धावूचतुः ।
कुशलं नो गृहे विप्र भृत्यवर्गे च सर्वशः ।
कच्चित्त्वमप्यविघ्नेन संप्राप्तो भगवन्निह ॥१५॥
15. vṛddhāvūcatuḥ ,
kuśalaṁ no gṛhe vipra bhṛtyavarge ca sarvaśaḥ ,
kaccittvamapyavighnena saṁprāpto bhagavanniha.
15. vṛddhau ūcatuḥ kuśalam naḥ gṛhe vipra bhṛtyavarge ca
sarvaśaḥ kaccit tvam api avighnena samprāptaḥ bhagavan iha
15. The two elders said, "Is all well in our house, O brahmin, and with all our servants? We hope, venerable sir, that you too have arrived here without any impediments."
मार्कण्डेय उवाच ।
बाढमित्येव तौ विप्रः प्रत्युवाच मुदान्वितः ।
धर्मव्याधस्तु तं विप्रमर्थवद्वाक्यमब्रवीत् ॥१६॥
16. mārkaṇḍeya uvāca ,
bāḍhamityeva tau vipraḥ pratyuvāca mudānvitaḥ ,
dharmavyādhastu taṁ vipramarthavadvākyamabravīt.
16. mārkaṇḍeyaḥ uvāca bāḍham iti eva tau vipraḥ prati uvāca mudā
anvitaḥ dharmavyādhaḥ tu tam vipram arthavat vākyam abravīt
16. Markandeya said: The brahmin, filled with joy, replied to those two (elders), "Yes, indeed." But then, the righteous hunter (dharmavyādha) spoke meaningful words to that brahmin.
पिता माता च भगवन्नेतौ मे दैवतं परम् ।
यद्दैवतेभ्यः कर्तव्यं तदेताभ्यां करोम्यहम् ॥१७॥
17. pitā mātā ca bhagavannetau me daivataṁ param ,
yaddaivatebhyaḥ kartavyaṁ tadetābhyāṁ karomyaham.
17. pitā mātā ca bhagavan etau me daivatam param yat
daivatebhyaḥ kartavyam tat etābhyām karomi aham
17. “O venerable sir, these two, my father and my mother, are my supreme deities. Whatever is to be done for the gods, that I do for them.”
त्रयस्त्रिंशद्यथा देवाः सर्वे शक्रपुरोगमाः ।
संपूज्याः सर्वलोकस्य तथा वृद्धाविमौ मम ॥१८॥
18. trayastriṁśadyathā devāḥ sarve śakrapurogamāḥ ,
saṁpūjyāḥ sarvalokasya tathā vṛddhāvimau mama.
18. trayastriṃśat yathā devāḥ sarve śakrapurogamāḥ
saṃpūjyāḥ sarvalokasya tathā vṛddhau imau mama
18. “Just as the thirty-three gods, all with Indra as their chief, are to be worshipped by all people, similarly, these two elders of mine are to be worshipped.”
उपहारानाहरन्तो देवतानां यथा द्विजाः ।
कुर्वते तद्वदेताभ्यां करोम्यहमतन्द्रितः ॥१९॥
19. upahārānāharanto devatānāṁ yathā dvijāḥ ,
kurvate tadvadetābhyāṁ karomyahamatandritaḥ.
19. upahārān āharantaḥ devatānām yathā dvijāḥ
kurvate tadvat etābhyām karomi aham atandritaḥ
19. Just as the twice-born (dvijāḥ) bring offerings and perform rituals for the deities, so do I diligently act for these two (my parents).
एतौ मे परमं ब्रह्मन्पिता माता च दैवतम् ।
एतौ पुष्पैः फलै रत्नैस्तोषयामि सदा द्विज ॥२०॥
20. etau me paramaṁ brahmanpitā mātā ca daivatam ,
etau puṣpaiḥ phalai ratnaistoṣayāmi sadā dvija.
20. etau me paramam brahman pitā mātā ca daivatam
etau puṣpaiḥ phalaiḥ ratnaiḥ toṣayāmi sadā dvija
20. O supreme brahmin (brahman), these two, my father and mother, are my supreme deities. O twice-born (dvija), I always please these two with flowers, fruits, and jewels.
एतावेवाग्नयो मह्यं यान्वदन्ति मनीषिणः ।
यज्ञा वेदाश्च चत्वारः सर्वमेतौ मम द्विज ॥२१॥
21. etāvevāgnayo mahyaṁ yānvadanti manīṣiṇaḥ ,
yajñā vedāśca catvāraḥ sarvametau mama dvija.
21. etau eva agnayaḥ mahyam yān vadanti manīṣiṇaḥ
yajñāḥ vedāḥ ca catvāraḥ sarvam etau mama dvija
21. O twice-born (dvija), these two are indeed the sacred fires for me, which the wise ones (manīṣiṇaḥ) refer to as the Vedic rituals (yajña) and the four Vedas. These two are everything to me.
एतदर्थं मम प्राणा भार्या पुत्राः सुहृज्जनाः ।
सपुत्रदारः शुश्रूषां नित्यमेव करोम्यहम् ॥२२॥
22. etadarthaṁ mama prāṇā bhāryā putrāḥ suhṛjjanāḥ ,
saputradāraḥ śuśrūṣāṁ nityameva karomyaham.
22. etadartham mama prāṇāḥ bhāryā putrāḥ suhṛjjanāḥ
saputradāraḥ śuśrūṣām nityam eva karomi aham
22. For the sake of these two (parents), my life, my wife, my sons, and my friends exist. I, together with my wife and sons, always indeed perform service for them.
स्वयं च स्नापयाम्येतौ तथा पादौ प्रधावये ।
आहारं संप्रयच्छामि स्वयं च द्विजसत्तम ॥२३॥
23. svayaṁ ca snāpayāmyetau tathā pādau pradhāvaye ,
āhāraṁ saṁprayacchāmi svayaṁ ca dvijasattama.
23. svayam ca snāpayāmi etau tathā pādau pradhāvaye
āhāram samprayacchāmi svayam ca dvijasattama
23. O best among the twice-born (dvija), I myself bathe these two, wash their feet, and personally offer them food.
अनुकूलाः कथा वच्मि विप्रियं परिवर्जयन् ।
अधर्मेणापि संयुक्तं प्रियमाभ्यां करोम्यहम् ॥२४॥
24. anukūlāḥ kathā vacmi vipriyaṁ parivarjayan ,
adharmeṇāpi saṁyuktaṁ priyamābhyāṁ karomyaham.
24. anukūlāḥ kathāḥ vacmi vipriyam parivarjayan
adharmeṇa api saṃyuktam priyam ābhyām karomi aham
24. I tell pleasing stories and avoid anything unpleasant. Even if it entails unrighteousness (adharma), I make it agreeable to these two.
धर्ममेव गुरुं ज्ञात्वा करोमि द्विजसत्तम ।
अतन्द्रितः सदा विप्र शुश्रूषां वै करोम्यहम् ॥२५॥
25. dharmameva guruṁ jñātvā karomi dvijasattama ,
atandritaḥ sadā vipra śuśrūṣāṁ vai karomyaham.
25. dharmam eva gurum jñātvā karomi dvijasattama
atandritaḥ sadā vipra śuśrūṣām vai karomi aham
25. O best among the twice-born (dvija), understanding natural law (dharma) alone as my guide, I act. Always diligently, O brahmin (vipra), I unfailingly perform service.
पञ्चैव गुरवो ब्रह्मन्पुरुषस्य बुभूषतः ।
पिता माताग्निरात्मा च गुरुश्च द्विजसत्तम ॥२६॥
26. pañcaiva guravo brahmanpuruṣasya bubhūṣataḥ ,
pitā mātāgnirātmā ca guruśca dvijasattama.
26. pañca eva guravaḥ brahman puruṣasya bubhūṣataḥ
pitā mātā agniḥ ātmā ca guruḥ ca dvijasattama
26. O brahmin (brahman), for a person who wishes to prosper, there are truly five teachers: the father, the mother, the fire, one's own self (ātman), and the spiritual teacher (guru), O best among the twice-born (dvija).
एतेषु यस्तु वर्तेत सम्यगेव द्विजोत्तम ।
भवेयुरग्नयस्तस्य परिचीर्णास्तु नित्यशः ।
गार्हस्थ्ये वर्तमानस्य धर्म एष सनातनः ॥२७॥
27. eteṣu yastu varteta samyageva dvijottama ,
bhaveyuragnayastasya paricīrṇāstu nityaśaḥ ,
gārhasthye vartamānasya dharma eṣa sanātanaḥ.
27. eteṣu yaḥ tu varteta samyak eva
dvijottama bhaveyuḥ agnayaḥ tasya
paricīrṇāḥ tu nityaśaḥ gārhasthye
vartamānasya dharmaḥ eṣaḥ sanātanaḥ
27. O best among the twice-born (dvijottama), whoever properly abides by these (duties), for him, his sacred fires would be considered to have been constantly served. This is the eternal constitution (dharma) for one living the householder life.
