वैशंपायन उवाच ।
द्विवर्षोपनिवृत्तेषु पाण्डवेषु यदृच्छया ।
देवर्षिर्नारदो राजन्नाजगाम युधिष्ठिरम् ॥१॥

dvivarṣopanivṛtteṣu pāṇḍaveṣu yadṛcchayā ,

1. Vaiśampāyana said: O King, after two years had passed since the Pāṇḍavas' return, the divine sage (devarṣi) Nārada happened to arrive at Yudhiṣṭhira's.
तमभ्यर्च्य महाबाहुः कुरुराजो युधिष्ठिरः ।
आसीनं परिविश्वस्तं प्रोवाच वदतां वरः ॥२॥
2. tamabhyarcya mahābāhuḥ kururājo yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ,
āsīnaṁ pariviśvastaṁ provāca vadatāṁ varaḥ.

2. The mighty-armed (mahābāhu) Yudhiṣṭhira, king of the Kurus, having honored him (Nārada), spoke to him as he sat comfortably and trustingly; Yudhiṣṭhira was the foremost among speakers.
चिरस्य खलु पश्यामि भगवन्तमुपस्थितम् ।
कच्चित्ते कुशलं विप्र शुभं वा प्रत्युपस्थितम् ॥३॥
3. cirasya khalu paśyāmi bhagavantamupasthitam ,
kaccitte kuśalaṁ vipra śubhaṁ vā pratyupasthitam.

3. Indeed, it has been a long time since I have seen Your Reverence (bhagavantam) present. I hope, O brāhmaṇa (vipra), that all is well with you, and that good fortune has come your way.
के देशाः परिदृष्टास्ते किं च कार्यं करोमि ते ।
तद्ब्रूहि द्विजमुख्य त्वमस्माकं च प्रियोऽतिथिः ॥४॥
4. ke deśāḥ paridṛṣṭāste kiṁ ca kāryaṁ karomi te ,
tadbrūhi dvijamukhya tvamasmākaṁ ca priyo'tithiḥ.

brūhi dvijamukhya tvam asmākam ca priyaḥ atithiḥ

4. Which regions have you visited? And what service can I do for you? Please tell me that, O chief among the twice-born (dvijamukhya), for you are also a dear guest to us.
नारद उवाच ।
चिरदृष्टोऽसि मे राजन्नागतोऽस्मि तपोवनात् ।
परिदृष्टानि तीर्थानि गङ्गा चैव मया नृप ॥५॥
5. nārada uvāca ,
ciradṛṣṭo'si me rājannāgato'smi tapovanāt ,
paridṛṣṭāni tīrthāni gaṅgā caiva mayā nṛpa.
5. nārada uvāca cira-dṛṣṭaḥ asi me rājan āgataḥ asmi
tapovanāt pari-dṛṣṭāni tīrthāni gaṅgā ca eva mayā nṛpa

5. Nārada said: O King, I see you after a long time! I have come from the hermitage. O King, I have thoroughly visited the holy places and the Gaṅgā.
युधिष्ठिर उवाच ।
वदन्ति पुरुषा मेऽद्य गङ्गातीरनिवासिनः ।
धृतराष्ट्रं महात्मानमास्थितं परमं तपः ॥६॥
6. yudhiṣṭhira uvāca ,
vadanti puruṣā me'dya gaṅgātīranivāsinaḥ ,
dhṛtarāṣṭraṁ mahātmānamāsthitaṁ paramaṁ tapaḥ.
6. yudhiṣṭhira uvāca vadanti puruṣāḥ me adya gaṅgā-tīra-nivāsinaḥ
dhṛtarāṣṭram mahā-ātmānam āsthitam paramam tapaḥ

6. Yudhiṣṭhira said: Today, men dwelling on the bank of the Gaṅgā are telling me that the great-souled (mahā-ātman) Dhṛtarāṣṭra is practicing supreme austerity (tapas).
अपि दृष्टस्त्वया तत्र कुशली स कुरूद्वहः ।
गान्धारी च पृथा चैव सूतपुत्रश्च संजयः ॥७॥
7. api dṛṣṭastvayā tatra kuśalī sa kurūdvahaḥ ,
gāndhārī ca pṛthā caiva sūtaputraśca saṁjayaḥ.
7. api dṛṣṭaḥ tvayā tatra kuśalī saḥ kurūdvahaḥ
gāndhārī ca pṛthā ca eva sūta-putraḥ ca sañjayaḥ

7. Have you seen there that leader of the Kurus (Dhṛtarāṣṭra) in good health? And Gāndhārī, and Pṛthā, and Sañjaya, the charioteer's son?
कथं च वर्तते चाद्य पिता मम स पार्थिवः ।
श्रोतुमिच्छामि भगवन्यदि दृष्टस्त्वया नृपः ॥८॥
8. kathaṁ ca vartate cādya pitā mama sa pārthivaḥ ,
śrotumicchāmi bhagavanyadi dṛṣṭastvayā nṛpaḥ.
8. katham ca vartate ca adya pitā mama saḥ pārthivaḥ
śrotum icchāmi bhagavan yadi dṛṣṭaḥ tvayā nṛpaḥ
8. ca adya mama saḥ pārthivaḥ pitā katham vartate
bhagavan yadi nṛpaḥ tvayā dṛṣṭaḥ śrotum icchāmi
8. And how is that royal father of mine doing today? O revered one, I wish to hear if the king was seen by you.
नारद उवाच ।
स्थिरीभूय महाराज शृणु सर्वं यथातथम् ।
यथा श्रुतं च दृष्टं च मया तस्मिंस्तपोवने ॥९॥
9. nārada uvāca ,
sthirībhūya mahārāja śṛṇu sarvaṁ yathātatham ,
yathā śrutaṁ ca dṛṣṭaṁ ca mayā tasmiṁstapovane.

yathā śrutam ca dṛṣṭam ca mayā tasmin tapovane

9. Nārada spoke: "O great king, compose yourself and listen to everything exactly as it happened, as it was heard and seen by me in that hermitage."
वनवासनिवृत्तेषु भवत्सु कुरुनन्दन ।
कुरुक्षेत्रात्पिता तुभ्यं गङ्गाद्वारं ययौ नृप ॥१०॥
10. vanavāsanivṛtteṣu bhavatsu kurunandana ,
kurukṣetrātpitā tubhyaṁ gaṅgādvāraṁ yayau nṛpa.

kurukṣetrāt pitā tubhyam gaṅgādvāram yayau nṛpa
10. kurunandana nṛpa bhavatsu vanavāsanivṛtteṣu

10. O delight of the Kurus, O king, when you (all) had returned from your forest dwelling, your father went from Kurukṣetra to Gaṅgādvāra.
गान्धार्या सहितो धीमान्वध्वा कुन्त्या समन्वितः ।
संजयेन च सूतेन साग्निहोत्रः सयाजकः ॥११॥
11. gāndhāryā sahito dhīmānvadhvā kuntyā samanvitaḥ ,
saṁjayena ca sūtena sāgnihotraḥ sayājakaḥ.
11. gāndhāryā sahitaḥ dhīmān vadhvā kuntyā samanvitaḥ
sañjayena ca sūtena sāgnihotraḥ sayājakaḥ
11. dhīmān saḥ gāndhāryā sahitaḥ vadhvā kuntyā

11. The intelligent Dhṛtarāṣṭra was accompanied by Gāndhārī, together with his daughter-in-law Kuntī, and by Sañjaya the charioteer, along with his sacred fire (agnihotra) and a priest.
आतस्थे स तपस्तीव्रं पिता तव तपोधनः ।
वीटां मुखे समाधाय वायुभक्षोऽभवन्मुनिः ॥१२॥
12. ātasthe sa tapastīvraṁ pitā tava tapodhanaḥ ,
vīṭāṁ mukhe samādhāya vāyubhakṣo'bhavanmuniḥ.
12. ātatsthe sa tapas tīvram pitā tava tapodhanaḥ
vīṭām mukhe samādhāya vāyubhakṣaḥ abhavat muniḥ
12. tava pitā tapodhanaḥ sa tīvram tapas ātatsthe
mukhe vīṭām samādhāya muniḥ vāyubhakṣaḥ abhavat
12. Your father, who was rich in penance (tapas), undertook severe austerity (tapas). Placing a betel quid in his mouth, the sage (muni) became one who subsisted only on air.
वने स मुनिभिः सर्वैः पूज्यमानो महातपाः ।
त्वगस्थिमात्रशेषः स षण्मासानभवन्नृपः ॥१३॥
13. vane sa munibhiḥ sarvaiḥ pūjyamāno mahātapāḥ ,
tvagasthimātraśeṣaḥ sa ṣaṇmāsānabhavannṛpaḥ.
13. vane sa munibhiḥ sarvaiḥ pūjyamānaḥ mahātapāḥ
tvagasthimātraśeṣaḥ sa ṣaṇmāsān abhavat nṛpaḥ
13. sa nṛpaḥ vane sarvaiḥ munibhiḥ pūjyamānaḥ
mahātapāḥ sa ṣaṇmāsān tvagasthimātraśeṣaḥ abhavat
13. In that forest, the king (Dhṛtarāṣṭra), revered by all the sages (muni) and performing great austerities (tapas), became reduced to mere skin and bones for six months.
गान्धारी तु जलाहारा कुन्ती मासोपवासिनी ।
संजयः षष्ठभक्तेन वर्तयामास भारत ॥१४॥
14. gāndhārī tu jalāhārā kuntī māsopavāsinī ,
saṁjayaḥ ṣaṣṭhabhaktena vartayāmāsa bhārata.

14. O Bhārata, Gāndhārī subsisted on water, Kuntī observed a monthly fast, and Sañjaya maintained himself by taking only a sixth portion of food.
अग्नींस्तु याजकास्तत्र जुहुवुर्विधिवत्प्रभो ।
दृश्यतोऽदृश्यतश्चैव वने तस्मिन्नृपस्य ह ॥१५॥
15. agnīṁstu yājakāstatra juhuvurvidhivatprabho ,
dṛśyato'dṛśyataścaiva vane tasminnṛpasya ha.
15. agnīn tu yājakāḥ tatra juhuvuḥ vidhivat prabho
dṛśyataḥ adṛśyataḥ ca eva vane tasmin nṛpasya ha
15. prabho tatra yājakāḥ agnīn vidhivat juhuvuḥ
dṛśyataḥ adṛśyataḥ ca eva vane tasmin nṛpasya ha
15. O lord, there the priests performed Vedic fire rituals (homa) into the fires according to the proper rules, both with visible and invisible offerings, for the king (Dhṛtarāṣṭra) in that forest.
अनिकेतोऽथ राजा स बभूव वनगोचरः ।
ते चापि सहिते देव्यौ संजयश्च तमन्वयुः ॥१६॥
16. aniketo'tha rājā sa babhūva vanagocaraḥ ,
te cāpi sahite devyau saṁjayaśca tamanvayuḥ.
16. aniketaḥ atha rājā sa babhūva vanagocaraḥ te
ca api sahite devyau saṃjayaḥ ca tam anvayuḥ
16. atha sa rājā aniketaḥ vanagocaraḥ babhūva te
devyau sahite ca saṃjayaḥ api tam anvayuḥ
16. Then that king (Dhṛtarāṣṭra) became homeless and a dweller of the forest. And the two queens, along with Sañjaya, also followed him.
संजयो नृपतेर्नेता समेषु विषमेषु च ।
गान्धार्यास्तु पृथा राजंश्चक्षुरासीदनिन्दिता ॥१७॥
17. saṁjayo nṛpaternetā sameṣu viṣameṣu ca ,
gāndhāryāstu pṛthā rājaṁścakṣurāsīdaninditā.
17. sañjayaḥ nṛpateḥ netā sameṣu viṣameṣu ca |
gāndhāryāḥ tu pṛthā rājan cakṣuḥ āsīt aninditā
17. sañjayaḥ nṛpateḥ netā sameṣu ca viṣameṣu
rājan pṛthā tu gāndhāryāḥ aninditā cakṣuḥ āsīt
17. Sanjaya was the king's guide in both favorable and difficult circumstances. But Pṛthā, O King, was the faultless eye of Gāndhārī.
ततः कदाचिद्गङ्गायाः कच्छे स नृपसत्तमः ।
गङ्गायामाप्लुतो धीमानाश्रमाभिमुखोऽभवत् ॥१८॥
18. tataḥ kadācidgaṅgāyāḥ kacche sa nṛpasattamaḥ ,
gaṅgāyāmāpluto dhīmānāśramābhimukho'bhavat.
18. tataḥ kadācit gaṅgāyāḥ kacche sa nṛpasattamaḥ |
gaṅgāyām āplutaḥ dhīmān āśramābhimukhaḥ abhavat
18. tataḥ kadācit sa nṛpasattamaḥ dhīmān gaṅgāyāḥ
kacche gaṅgāyām āplutaḥ āśramābhimukhaḥ abhavat
18. Then, one day, that excellent king, wise and having bathed in the Gaṅgā on its bank, turned towards his hermitage (āśrama).
अथ वायुः समुद्भूतो दावाग्निरभवन्महान् ।
ददाह तद्वनं सर्वं परिगृह्य समन्ततः ॥१९॥
19. atha vāyuḥ samudbhūto dāvāgnirabhavanmahān ,
dadāha tadvanaṁ sarvaṁ parigṛhya samantataḥ.
19. atha vāyuḥ samuddhūtaḥ dāvāgniḥ abhavat mahān
| dadāha tat vanam sarvam parigṛhya samantataḥ
19. atha vāyuḥ samuddhūtaḥ mahān dāvāgniḥ abhavat

19. Then, a great wind arose, and a huge forest fire broke out. It burned that entire forest, engulfing it completely from all sides.
दह्यत्सु मृगयूथेषु द्विजिह्वेषु समन्ततः ।
वराहाणां च यूथेषु संश्रयत्सु जलाशयान् ॥२०॥
20. dahyatsu mṛgayūtheṣu dvijihveṣu samantataḥ ,
varāhāṇāṁ ca yūtheṣu saṁśrayatsu jalāśayān.
20. dahyatsu mṛgayūtheṣu dvijihveṣu samantataḥ
| varāhāṇām ca yūtheṣu saṃśrayatsu jalāśayān
20. samantataḥ mṛgayūtheṣu dvijihveṣu dahyatsu
ca varāhāṇām yūtheṣu jalāśayān saṃśrayatsu
20. As herds of deer and snakes were burning all around, and herds of boars were seeking refuge in bodies of water.
समाविद्धे वने तस्मिन्प्राप्ते व्यसन उत्तमे ।
निराहारतया राजा मन्दप्राणविचेष्टितः ।
असमर्थोऽपसरणे सुकृशौ मातरौ च ते ॥२१॥
21. samāviddhe vane tasminprāpte vyasana uttame ,
nirāhāratayā rājā mandaprāṇaviceṣṭitaḥ ,
asamartho'pasaraṇe sukṛśau mātarau ca te.

mandaprāṇaviceṣṭitaḥ asamarthaḥ
apasaraṇe sukṛśau mātarau ca te
21. tasmin samāviddhe vane,
uttame vyasane prāpte,
rājā nirāhāratayā mandaprāṇaviceṣṭitaḥ apasaraṇe asamarthaḥ,
ca te sukṛśau mātarau
21. In that forest, when the ultimate calamity had befallen them, the king, due to starvation, had weakened vital functions and was unable to escape. Your two mothers, too, were greatly emaciated.
ततः स नृपतिर्दृष्ट्वा वह्निमायान्तमन्तिकात् ।
इदमाह ततः सूतं संजयं पृथिवीपते ॥२२॥
22. tataḥ sa nṛpatirdṛṣṭvā vahnimāyāntamantikāt ,
idamāha tataḥ sūtaṁ saṁjayaṁ pṛthivīpate.
22. tataḥ sa nṛpatiḥ dṛṣṭvā vahnim āyāntam antikāt
idam āha tataḥ sūtam saṃjayam pṛthivīpate
22. tataḥ sa nṛpatiḥ,
antikāt āyāntam vahnim dṛṣṭvā,
tataḥ sūtam saṃjayam idam āha.

22. Then that king, seeing the fire approaching from nearby, spoke these words to his charioteer Saṃjaya. (This is being narrated to you,) O lord of the earth.
गच्छ संजय यत्राग्निर्न त्वां दहति कर्हिचित् ।
वयमत्राग्निना युक्ता गमिष्यामः परां गतिम् ॥२३॥
23. gaccha saṁjaya yatrāgnirna tvāṁ dahati karhicit ,
vayamatrāgninā yuktā gamiṣyāmaḥ parāṁ gatim.
23. gaccha saṃjaya yatra agniḥ na tvām dahati karhicit
vayam atra agninā yuktāḥ gamiṣyāmaḥ parām gatim
23. saṃjaya,
yatra agniḥ tvām karhicit na dahati,
(tatra) gaccha.
atra vayam agninā yuktāḥ parām gatim gamiṣyāmaḥ.
23. Go, Saṃjaya, to a place where fire will never burn you. We, here, by embracing the fire, will attain the supreme state.
तमुवाच किलोद्विग्नः संजयो वदतां वरः ।
राजन्मृत्युरनिष्टोऽयं भविता ते वृथाग्निना ॥२४॥
24. tamuvāca kilodvignaḥ saṁjayo vadatāṁ varaḥ ,
rājanmṛtyuraniṣṭo'yaṁ bhavitā te vṛthāgninā.
24. tam uvāca kila udvignaḥ saṃjayaḥ vadatām varaḥ
rājan mṛtyuḥ aniṣṭaḥ ayam bhavitā te vṛthā agninā
24. kila udvignaḥ vadatām varaḥ saṃjayaḥ tam uvāca: "rājan,
ayam aniṣṭaḥ mṛtyuḥ te agninā vṛthā bhavitā.
"
24. To him, the agitated Saṃjaya, who was the best of speakers, replied: 'O King, this undesirable death, caused by fire, will befall you in vain.'
न चोपायं प्रपश्यामि मोक्षणे जातवेदसः ।
यदत्रानन्तरं कार्यं तद्भवान्वक्तुमर्हति ॥२५॥
25. na copāyaṁ prapaśyāmi mokṣaṇe jātavedasaḥ ,
yadatrānantaraṁ kāryaṁ tadbhavānvaktumarhati.
25. na ca upāyam prapaśyāmi mokṣaṇe jātavedasaḥ yat
atra anantaram kāryam tat bhavān vaktum arhati
25. ca na mokṣaṇe jātavedasaḥ upāyam prapaśyāmi yat
atra anantaram kāryam tat bhavān vaktum arhati
25. And I do not see any means of escape from this fire. Whatever action is to be taken next in this situation, you (honorific) should tell me.
इत्युक्तः संजयेनेदं पुनराह स पार्थिवः ।
नैष मृत्युरनिष्टो नो निःसृतानां गृहात्स्वयम् ॥२६॥
26. ityuktaḥ saṁjayenedaṁ punarāha sa pārthivaḥ ,
naiṣa mṛtyuraniṣṭo no niḥsṛtānāṁ gṛhātsvayam.
26. iti uktaḥ saṃjayena idam punaḥ āha saḥ pārthivaḥ
na eṣaḥ mṛtyuḥ aniṣṭaḥ naḥ niḥsṛtānām gṛhāt svayam
26. iti saṃjayena uktaḥ saḥ pārthivaḥ punaḥ idam āha
eṣaḥ mṛtyuḥ gṛhāt svayam niḥsṛtānām naḥ aniṣṭaḥ na
26. Being thus addressed by Sanjaya, that king (Dhritarashtra) again said this: 'This death is not undesirable for us, who have voluntarily left our home.'
जलमग्निस्तथा वायुरथ वापि विकर्शनम् ।
तापसानां प्रशस्यन्ते गच्छ संजय माचिरम् ॥२७॥
27. jalamagnistathā vāyuratha vāpi vikarśanam ,
tāpasānāṁ praśasyante gaccha saṁjaya māciram.
27. jalam agniḥ tathā vāyuḥ atha vā api vikarṣaṇam
tāpasānām praśasyante gaccha saṃjaya mā ciram
27. jalam agniḥ tathā vāyuḥ atha vā api vikarṣaṇam
tāpasānām praśasyante saṃjaya gaccha mā ciram
27. Water, fire, wind, or even physical emaciation, are considered commendable practices for ascetics. Go, Sanjaya, do not delay.
इत्युक्त्वा संजयं राजा समाधाय मनस्तदा ।
प्राङ्मुखः सह गान्धार्या कुन्त्या चोपाविशत्तदा ॥२८॥
28. ityuktvā saṁjayaṁ rājā samādhāya manastadā ,
prāṅmukhaḥ saha gāndhāryā kuntyā copāviśattadā.
28. iti uktvā saṃjayam rājā samādhāya manaḥ tadā
prāṅmukhaḥ saha gāndhāryā kuntyā ca upāviśat tadā
28. rājā iti saṃjayam uktvā tadā manaḥ samādhāya tadā
prāṅmukhaḥ gāndhāryā kuntyā ca saha upāviśat
28. Having thus spoken to Sanjaya, the king (Dhritarashtra) then composed his mind. Facing east, he sat down with Gandhari and Kunti.
संजयस्तं तथा दृष्ट्वा प्रदक्षिणमथाकरोत् ।
उवाच चैनं मेधावी युङ्क्ष्वात्मानमिति प्रभो ॥२९॥
29. saṁjayastaṁ tathā dṛṣṭvā pradakṣiṇamathākarot ,
uvāca cainaṁ medhāvī yuṅkṣvātmānamiti prabho.
29. saṃjayaḥ tam tathā dṛṣṭvā pradakṣiṇam atha akarot
uvāca ca enam medhāvī yuṅkṣva ātmānam iti prabho
29. saṃjayaḥ tam tathā dṛṣṭvā,
atha pradakṣiṇam akarot ca enam medhāvī uvāca: "prabho,
ātmānam yuṅkṣva iti.
"
29. Having seen him in that state, Sanjaya then circumambulated him clockwise. And the intelligent Sanjaya said to him, "O lord, fix your self (ātman)!"
ऋषिपुत्रो मनीषी स राजा चक्रेऽस्य तद्वचः ।
संनिरुध्येन्द्रियग्राममासीत्काष्ठोपमस्तदा ॥३०॥
30. ṛṣiputro manīṣī sa rājā cakre'sya tadvacaḥ ,
saṁnirudhyendriyagrāmamāsītkāṣṭhopamastadā.
30. ṛṣiputraḥ manīṣī saḥ rājā cakre asya tat vacaḥ
saṃnirudhya indriyagrāmam āsīt kāṣṭhopamaḥ tadā
30. saḥ rājā ṛṣiputraḥ manīṣī asya tat vacaḥ cakre.
tadā indriyagrāmam saṃnirudhya,
kāṣṭhopamaḥ āsīt.
30. That wise king, the son of the sage, accepted his advice. Then, having completely restrained his group of senses, he became like a log of wood.
गान्धारी च महाभागा जननी च पृथा तव ।
दावाग्निना समायुक्ते स च राजा पिता तव ॥३१॥
31. gāndhārī ca mahābhāgā jananī ca pṛthā tava ,
dāvāgninā samāyukte sa ca rājā pitā tava.

dāvāgninā samāyukte saḥ ca rājā pitā tava
31. gāndhārī ca mahābhāgā,

31. Gandhari, the noble lady, and your mother Pritha, were both afflicted by a forest fire; and also that king, your father.
संजयस्तु महामात्रस्तस्माद्दावादमुच्यत ।
गङ्गाकूले मया दृष्टस्तापसैः परिवारितः ॥३२॥
32. saṁjayastu mahāmātrastasmāddāvādamucyata ,
gaṅgākūle mayā dṛṣṭastāpasaiḥ parivāritaḥ.
32. saṃjayaḥ tu mahāmātraḥ tasmāt dāvāt amucyata
gaṅgākūle mayā dṛṣṭaḥ tāpasaiḥ parivāritaḥ
32. saṃjayaḥ tu mahāmātraḥ tasmāt dāvāt amucyata.
mayā gaṅgākūle dṛṣṭaḥ,
tāpasaiḥ parivāritaḥ.
32. But Sanjaya, the great minister, was freed from that forest fire. He was seen by me on the bank of the Gaṅgā, surrounded by ascetics.
स तानामन्त्र्य तेजस्वी निवेद्यैतच्च सर्वशः ।
प्रययौ संजयः सूतो हिमवन्तं महीधरम् ॥३३॥
33. sa tānāmantrya tejasvī nivedyaitacca sarvaśaḥ ,
prayayau saṁjayaḥ sūto himavantaṁ mahīdharam.
33. saḥ tān āmantrya tejasvī nivedya etat ca sarvaśaḥ
prayayau sañjayaḥ sūtaḥ himavantam mahīdharam
33. saḥ tejasvī sūtaḥ sañjayaḥ tān āmantrya etat ca
sarvaśaḥ nivedya mahīdharam himavantam prayayau
33. The radiant Sañjaya, the charioteer, having addressed them and reported all this fully, then proceeded to the Himālaya mountain.
एवं स निधनं प्राप्तः कुरुराजो महामनाः ।
गान्धारी च पृथा चैव जनन्यौ ते नराधिप ॥३४॥
34. evaṁ sa nidhanaṁ prāptaḥ kururājo mahāmanāḥ ,
gāndhārī ca pṛthā caiva jananyau te narādhipa.
34. evam saḥ nidhanam prāptaḥ kururājaḥ mahāmanāḥ
gāndhārī ca pṛthā ca eva jananyau te narādhipa
34. narādhipa evam saḥ mahāmanāḥ kururājaḥ nidhanam
prāptaḥ gāndhārī ca pṛthā ca eva te jananyau
34. O king, in this way, that great-souled king of the Kurus met his end. Gaṅdhārī and Pṛthā are indeed your two mothers.
यदृच्छयानुव्रजता मया राज्ञः कलेवरम् ।
तयोश्च देव्योरुभयोर्दृष्टानि भरतर्षभ ॥३५॥
35. yadṛcchayānuvrajatā mayā rājñaḥ kalevaram ,
tayośca devyorubhayordṛṣṭāni bharatarṣabha.
35. yadṛcchayā anuvrajatā mayā rājñaḥ kalevaram
tayoḥ ca devyoḥ ubhayoḥ dṛṣṭāni bharatarṣabha
35. bharatarṣabha mayā yadṛcchayā rājñaḥ kalevaram
anuvrajatā tayoḥ ca ubhayoḥ devyoḥ dṛṣṭāni
35. O best of the Bhāratas (bharatarṣabha), by me, who by chance was following the king's body, the circumstances of both those queens were witnessed.
ततस्तपोवने तस्मिन्समाजग्मुस्तपोधनाः ।
श्रुत्वा राज्ञस्तथा निष्ठां न त्वशोचन्गतिं च ते ॥३६॥
36. tatastapovane tasminsamājagmustapodhanāḥ ,
śrutvā rājñastathā niṣṭhāṁ na tvaśocangatiṁ ca te.
36. tataḥ tapovane tasmin samājagmuḥ tapodhanāḥ śrutvā
rājñaḥ tathā niṣṭhām na tu aśocan gatim ca te
36. tataḥ tasmin tapovane tapodhanāḥ samājagmuḥ te
rājñaḥ tathā niṣṭhām gatim ca śrutvā na tu aśocan
36. Then, in that hermitage, the ascetics (tapodhana) gathered. Having heard about the king's such demise, they did not grieve his ultimate destiny.
तत्राश्रौषमहं सर्वमेतत्पुरुषसत्तम ।
यथा च नृपतिर्दग्धो देव्यौ ते चेति पाण्डव ॥३७॥
37. tatrāśrauṣamahaṁ sarvametatpuruṣasattama ,
yathā ca nṛpatirdagdho devyau te ceti pāṇḍava.
37. tatra aśrauṣam aham sarvam etat puruṣasattama
yathā ca nṛpatiḥ dagdhaḥ devyau te ca iti pāṇḍava
37. O best among men, O Pāṇḍava, I heard all this there – how the king was cremated, and those two queens as well, thus.
न शोचितव्यं राजेन्द्र स्वन्तः स पृथिवीपतिः ।
प्राप्तवानग्निसंयोगं गान्धारी जननी च ते ॥३८॥
38. na śocitavyaṁ rājendra svantaḥ sa pṛthivīpatiḥ ,
prāptavānagnisaṁyogaṁ gāndhārī jananī ca te.
38. na śocitavyam rājendra svantaḥ saḥ pṛthivīpatiḥ
prāptavān agnisaṃyogam gāndhārī jananī ca te
38. O great king, there is no need to grieve. That lord of the earth (the king) found a good end and attained union with fire. Gāndhārī and your mother also did the same.
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
एतच्छ्रुत्वा तु सर्वेषां पाण्डवानां महात्मनाम् ।
निर्याणं धृतराष्ट्रस्य शोकः समभवन्महान् ॥३९॥
39. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
etacchrutvā tu sarveṣāṁ pāṇḍavānāṁ mahātmanām ,
niryāṇaṁ dhṛtarāṣṭrasya śokaḥ samabhavanmahān.
39. vaiśaṃpāyanaḥ uvāca etat śrutvā tu sarveṣām pāṇḍavānām
mahātmanām niryāṇam dhṛtarāṣṭrasya śokaḥ samabhavat mahān
39. Vaiśaṃpāyana said: Indeed, upon hearing this about Dhṛtarāṣṭra's passing, a great sorrow arose among all the great-souled Pāṇḍavas.
अन्तःपुराणां च तदा महानार्तस्वरोऽभवत् ।
पौराणां च महाराज श्रुत्वा राज्ञस्तदा गतिम् ॥४०॥
40. antaḥpurāṇāṁ ca tadā mahānārtasvaro'bhavat ,
paurāṇāṁ ca mahārāja śrutvā rājñastadā gatim.
40. antaḥpurāṇām ca tadā mahān ārtasvaraḥ abhavat
paurāṇām ca mahārāja śrutvā rājñaḥ tadā gatim
40. O great king, then a great cry of distress arose among the women of the inner apartments and among the citizens, when they heard the king's fate at that time.
अहो धिगिति राजा तु विक्रुश्य भृशदुःखितः ।
ऊर्ध्वबाहुः स्मरन्मातुः प्ररुरोद युधिष्ठिरः ।
भीमसेनपुरोगाश्च भ्रातरः सर्व एव ते ॥४१॥
41. aho dhigiti rājā tu vikruśya bhṛśaduḥkhitaḥ ,
ūrdhvabāhuḥ smaranmātuḥ praruroda yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ,
bhīmasenapurogāśca bhrātaraḥ sarva eva te.
41. aho dhik iti rājā tu vikruśya
bhṛśaduḥkhitaḥ ūrdhvabāhuḥ smaran
mātuḥ praruroda yudhiṣṭhiraḥ
bhīmasenapurogāḥ ca bhrātaraḥ sarve eva te

vikruśya bhṛśaduḥkhitaḥ ūrdhvabāhuḥ
mātuḥ smaran praruroda ca
bhīmasenapurogāḥ te sarve eva bhrātaraḥ
41. “Oh, shame!” - thus, the king, Yudhishthira, greatly distressed, cried out loudly and, with upraised arms, remembering his mother, he wept aloud. All those brothers, led by Bhimasena, also followed suit.
अन्तःपुरेषु च तदा सुमहान्रुदितस्वनः ।
प्रादुरासीन्महाराज पृथां श्रुत्वा तथागताम् ॥४२॥
42. antaḥpureṣu ca tadā sumahānruditasvanaḥ ,
prādurāsīnmahārāja pṛthāṁ śrutvā tathāgatām.
42. antaḥpureṣu ca tadā sumahān ruditasvanaḥ
prādurāsīt mahārāja pṛthām śrutvā tathāgatām
42. mahārāja tadā ca antaḥpureṣu pṛthām tathāgatām

42. And then, O great king, in the inner apartments, a very loud sound of lamentation arose, as they had heard that Pritha (Kunti) had met such a fate.
तं च वृद्धं तथा दग्धं हतपुत्रं नराधिपम् ।
अन्वशोचन्त ते सर्वे गान्धारीं च तपस्विनीम् ॥४३॥
43. taṁ ca vṛddhaṁ tathā dagdhaṁ hataputraṁ narādhipam ,
anvaśocanta te sarve gāndhārīṁ ca tapasvinīm.
43. tam ca vṛddham tathā dagdham hataputram narādhipam
anvaśocanta te sarve gāndhārīm ca tapasvinīm
43. te sarve anvaśocanta ca tam vṛddham tathā dagdham
hataputram narādhipam ca tapasvinīm gāndhārīm
43. And all of them grieved for that old king (Dhritarashtra), whose sons had been killed and who had met such an end, and for Gandhari, the ascetic.
तस्मिन्नुपरते शब्दे मुहूर्तादिव भारत ।
निगृह्य बाष्पं धैर्येण धर्मराजोऽब्रवीदिदम् ॥४४॥
44. tasminnuparate śabde muhūrtādiva bhārata ,
nigṛhya bāṣpaṁ dhairyeṇa dharmarājo'bravīdidam.
44. tasmin uparate śabde muhūrtāt iva bhārata
nigṛhya bāṣpam dhairyeṇa dharmarājaḥ abravīt idam
44. bhārata tasmin śabde uparate muhūrtāt iva
dharmarājaḥ bāṣpam dhairyeṇa nigṛhya idam abravīt
44. O Bharata, when that sound had ceased, after about a moment, the king of righteousness (dharma) restrained his tears with fortitude and spoke these words.
