वैशंपायन उवाच ।
ततः सर्वाः प्रकृतयो नगराद्वारणावतात् ।
सर्वमङ्गलसंयुक्ता यथाशास्त्रमतन्द्रिताः ॥१॥
1. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
tataḥ sarvāḥ prakṛtayo nagarādvāraṇāvatāt ,
sarvamaṅgalasaṁyuktā yathāśāstramatandritāḥ.

1. Vaiśampāyana said: Then, all the diligent officials from the city of Vāraṇāvata, endowed with every auspicious item, came forth according to the sacred texts.
श्रुत्वागतान्पाण्डुपुत्रान्नानायानैः सहस्रशः ।
अभिजग्मुर्नरश्रेष्ठाञ्श्रुत्वैव परया मुदा ॥२॥
2. śrutvāgatānpāṇḍuputrānnānāyānaiḥ sahasraśaḥ ,
abhijagmurnaraśreṣṭhāñśrutvaiva parayā mudā.

2. Upon hearing that the sons of Pāṇḍu had arrived, thousands of people, using various vehicles, approached those best among men, indeed with supreme joy.
ते समासाद्य कौन्तेयान्वारणावतका जनाः ।
कृत्वा जयाशिषः सर्वे परिवार्योपतस्थिरे ॥३॥
3. te samāsādya kaunteyānvāraṇāvatakā janāḥ ,
kṛtvā jayāśiṣaḥ sarve parivāryopatasthire.

kṛtvā jayāśiṣaḥ sarve parivārya upatasthire
3. All those people from Vāraṇāvata, having approached the sons of Kunti, offered them blessings for victory and, surrounding them, stood in attendance.
तैर्वृतः पुरुषव्याघ्रो धर्मराजो युधिष्ठिरः ।
विबभौ देवसंकाशो वज्रपाणिरिवामरैः ॥४॥
4. tairvṛtaḥ puruṣavyāghro dharmarājo yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ,
vibabhau devasaṁkāśo vajrapāṇirivāmaraiḥ.
4. taiḥ vṛtaḥ puruṣavyāghraḥ dharmarājaḥ yudhiṣṭhiraḥ
vibabhau devasaṃkāśaḥ vajrapāṇiḥ iva amaraiḥ
4. Yudhiṣṭhira, the king of natural law (dharmarāja) and the best of men, surrounded by them, shone like the thunderbolt-wielding god (vajrapāṇi) among the immortals.
सत्कृतास्ते तु पौरैश्च पौरान्सत्कृत्य चानघाः ।
अलंकृतं जनाकीर्णं विविशुर्वारणावतम् ॥५॥
5. satkṛtāste tu pauraiśca paurānsatkṛtya cānaghāḥ ,
alaṁkṛtaṁ janākīrṇaṁ viviśurvāraṇāvatam.
5. satkṛtāḥ te tu pauraiḥ ca paurān satkṛtya ca
anaghāḥ alaṃkṛtam janākīrṇam viviśuḥ vāraṇāvatam
5. And those blameless ones, after being welcomed by the citizens and having honored the citizens in return, entered Vāraṇāvata, which was adorned and teeming with people.
ते प्रविश्य पुरं वीरास्तूर्णं जग्मुरथो गृहान् ।
ब्राह्मणानां महीपाल रतानां स्वेषु कर्मसु ॥६॥
6. te praviśya puraṁ vīrāstūrṇaṁ jagmuratho gṛhān ,
brāhmaṇānāṁ mahīpāla ratānāṁ sveṣu karmasu.
6. te praviśya puram vīrāḥ tūrṇam jagmuḥ atha u
gṛhān brāhmaṇānām mahīpāla ratānām sveṣu karmasu
6. O King (mahīpāla), those heroes, having quickly entered the city, then went to the houses of the Brahmins who were engaged in their own duties (karma).
नगराधिकृतानां च गृहाणि रथिनां तथा ।
उपतस्थुर्नरश्रेष्ठा वैश्यशूद्रगृहानपि ॥७॥
7. nagarādhikṛtānāṁ ca gṛhāṇi rathināṁ tathā ,
upatasthurnaraśreṣṭhā vaiśyaśūdragṛhānapi.
7. nagarādhikṛtānām ca gṛhāṇi rathinām tathā
upatasthuḥ naraśreṣṭhāḥ vaiśyaśūdragṛhān api
7. The best among men (naraśreṣṭhāḥ) also approached the houses of the city officials, of the charioteers, and even the houses of the Vaiśyas and Śūdras.
अर्चिताश्च नरैः पौरैः पाण्डवा भरतर्षभाः ।
जग्मुरावसथं पश्चात्पुरोचनपुरस्कृताः ॥८॥
8. arcitāśca naraiḥ pauraiḥ pāṇḍavā bharatarṣabhāḥ ,
jagmurāvasathaṁ paścātpurocanapuraskṛtāḥ.
8. arcitāḥ ca naraiḥ pauraiḥ pāṇḍavāḥ bharatarṣabhāḥ
jagmuḥ āvasatham paścāt purocanapuraskṛtāḥ
8. Honored by the citizens, the Pāṇḍavas, who were the foremost among the Bhāratas, subsequently went to their lodging, preceded by Purocana.
तेभ्यो भक्ष्यान्नपानानि शयनानि शुभानि च ।
आसनानि च मुख्यानि प्रददौ स पुरोचनः ॥९॥
9. tebhyo bhakṣyānnapānāni śayanāni śubhāni ca ,
āsanāni ca mukhyāni pradadau sa purocanaḥ.
9. tebhyaḥ bhakṣyānnapānāni śayanāni śubhāni ca
āsanāni ca mukhyāni pradadau saḥ purocanaḥ
9. That Purocana gave them eatables, food, drinks, comfortable beds, and excellent seats.
तत्र ते सत्कृतास्तेन सुमहार्हपरिच्छदाः ।
उपास्यमानाः पुरुषैरूषुः पुरनिवासिभिः ॥१०॥
10. tatra te satkṛtāstena sumahārhaparicchadāḥ ,
upāsyamānāḥ puruṣairūṣuḥ puranivāsibhiḥ.
10. tatra te satkṛtāḥ tena sumahārhaparicchadāḥ
upāsyamānāḥ puruṣaiḥ ūṣuḥ puranivāsibhiḥ
10. There, treated with great honor by him and provided with very valuable furnishings, they resided, attended upon by the men, the inhabitants of the city.
दशरात्रोषितानां तु तत्र तेषां पुरोचनः ।
निवेदयामास गृहं शिवाख्यमशिवं तदा ॥११॥
11. daśarātroṣitānāṁ tu tatra teṣāṁ purocanaḥ ,
nivedayāmāsa gṛhaṁ śivākhyamaśivaṁ tadā.
11. daśarātroṣitānām tu tatra teṣām purocanaḥ
nivedayāmāsa gṛham śivākhyam aśivam tadā
11. Then, Purocana presented to them, after they had resided there for ten nights, a house named 'Śiva' (the Auspicious), which was, in reality, inauspicious.
तत्र ते पुरुषव्याघ्रा विविशुः सपरिच्छदाः ।
पुरोचनस्य वचनात्कैलासमिव गुह्यकाः ॥१२॥
12. tatra te puruṣavyāghrā viviśuḥ saparicchadāḥ ,
purocanasya vacanātkailāsamiva guhyakāḥ.
12. tatra te puruṣavyāghrāḥ viviśuḥ saparicchadāḥ
purocanasya vacanāt kailāsam iva guhyakāḥ
12. There, those tiger-like men, the Pāṇḍavas, entered with their retinue at Purocana's command, just as the Guhyakas would enter Mount Kailāsa.
तत्त्वगारमभिप्रेक्ष्य सर्वधर्मविशारदः ।
उवाचाग्नेयमित्येवं भीमसेनं युधिष्ठिरः ।
जिघ्रन्सोम्य वसागन्धं सर्पिर्जतुविमिश्रितम् ॥१३॥
13. tattvagāramabhiprekṣya sarvadharmaviśāradaḥ ,
uvācāgneyamityevaṁ bhīmasenaṁ yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ,
jighransomya vasāgandhaṁ sarpirjatuvimiśritam.
13. tattvagāram abhiprekṣya sarvadharma-viśāradaḥ
uvāca āgneyam iti evam
bhīmasenam yudhiṣṭhiraḥ jighran saumya
vasā-gandham sarpirjatu-vimiśritam
13. Yudhishthira, skilled in all matters of (dharma), after closely examining that house, said to Bhimasena, 'O gentle one, by smelling the odor of fat mixed with ghee and lac, one can tell that this house is indeed meant to be set on fire.'
कृतं हि व्यक्तमाग्नेयमिदं वेश्म परंतप ।
शणसर्जरसं व्यक्तमानीतं गृहकर्मणि ।
मुञ्जबल्वजवंशादि द्रव्यं सर्वं घृतोक्षितम् ॥१४॥
14. kṛtaṁ hi vyaktamāgneyamidaṁ veśma paraṁtapa ,
śaṇasarjarasaṁ vyaktamānītaṁ gṛhakarmaṇi ,
muñjabalvajavaṁśādi dravyaṁ sarvaṁ ghṛtokṣitam.
14. kṛtam hi vyaktam āgneyam idam veśma
parantapa śaṇa-sarjarasam vyaktam
ānītam gṛha-karmaṇi muñja-balvaja-vaṃśādi
dravyam sarvam ghṛtokṣitam
14. O tormentor of foes (parantapa), this house has clearly been made to be flammable (āgneya). Flax and lac resin have evidently been brought for its construction. All materials, such as Munja grass, Balvaja grass, and bamboo, have been drenched in ghee.
शिल्पिभिः सुकृतं ह्याप्तैर्विनीतैर्वेश्मकर्मणि ।
विश्वस्तं मामयं पापो दग्धुकामः पुरोचनः ॥१५॥
15. śilpibhiḥ sukṛtaṁ hyāptairvinītairveśmakarmaṇi ,
viśvastaṁ māmayaṁ pāpo dagdhukāmaḥ purocanaḥ.
15. śilpibhiḥ sukṛtam hi āptaiḥ vinītaiḥ veśma-karmaṇi
viśvastam mām ayam pāpaḥ dagdhukāmaḥ purocanaḥ
15. It has been meticulously crafted by trusted and obedient artisans for the purpose of house construction. This wicked Purocana intends to burn me, even though I have placed my trust in him.
इमां तु तां महाबुद्धिर्विदुरो दृष्टवांस्तदा ।
आपदं तेन मां पार्थ स संबोधितवान्पुरा ॥१६॥
16. imāṁ tu tāṁ mahābuddhirviduro dṛṣṭavāṁstadā ,
āpadaṁ tena māṁ pārtha sa saṁbodhitavānpurā.
16. imām tu tām mahābuddhiḥ viduraḥ dṛṣṭavān tadā
āpadam tena mām pārtha saḥ saṃbodhitavān purā
16. However, the highly intelligent Vidura had foreseen this danger (āpad) then. Therefore, O Pārtha, he warned me of it long ago.
ते वयं बोधितास्तेन बुद्धवन्तोऽशिवं गृहम् ।
आचार्यैः सुकृतं गूढैर्दुर्योधनवशानुगैः ॥१७॥
17. te vayaṁ bodhitāstena buddhavanto'śivaṁ gṛham ,
ācāryaiḥ sukṛtaṁ gūḍhairduryodhanavaśānugaiḥ.
17. te vayam bodhitāḥ tena buddhavantaḥ aśivam gṛham
ācāryaiḥ sukṛtam gūḍhaiḥ duryodhana-vaśānugaiḥ
17. Having been warned by him, we have understood that this house is inauspicious. It was carefully constructed by secret artisans who were subservient to Duryodhana.
भीम उवाच ।
यदिदं गृहमाग्नेयं विहितं मन्यते भवान् ।
तत्रैव साधु गच्छामो यत्र पूर्वोषिता वयम् ॥१८॥
18. bhīma uvāca ,
yadidaṁ gṛhamāgneyaṁ vihitaṁ manyate bhavān ,
tatraiva sādhu gacchāmo yatra pūrvoṣitā vayam.
18. bhīmaḥ uvāca yat idam gṛham āgneyaṃ vihitam manyate
bhavān tatra eva sādhu gacchāmaḥ yatra pūrva uṣitā vayam
18. Bhīma said: "If you believe this house is designed to be set ablaze, then let us indeed go back to where we previously resided."
युधिष्ठिर उवाच ।
इह यत्तैर्निराकारैर्वस्तव्यमिति रोचये ।
नष्टैरिव विचिन्वद्भिर्गतिमिष्टां ध्रुवामितः ॥१९॥
19. yudhiṣṭhira uvāca ,
iha yattairnirākārairvastavyamiti rocaye ,
naṣṭairiva vicinvadbhirgatimiṣṭāṁ dhruvāmitaḥ.
19. yudhiṣṭhiraḥ uvāca iha yat taiḥ nirākāraiḥ vastavyam iti
rocaye naṣṭaiḥ iva vicinvadbhiḥ gatim iṣṭām dhruvām itaḥ
19. Yudhiṣṭhira said: "I prefer that we remain here unidentifiable, as if we are lost, searching for a secure and desired path from this place."
यदि विन्देत चाकारमस्माकं हि पुरोचनः ।
शीघ्रकारी ततो भूत्वा प्रसह्यापि दहेत नः ॥२०॥
20. yadi vindeta cākāramasmākaṁ hi purocanaḥ ,
śīghrakārī tato bhūtvā prasahyāpi daheta naḥ.
20. yadi vindeta ca ākāram asmākam hi purocanaḥ
śīghrakārī tataḥ bhūtvā prasahya api daheta naḥ
20. "If Purocana were to discover our true form, then, acting swiftly and forcefully, he would surely burn us."
नायं बिभेत्युपक्रोशादधर्माद्वा पुरोचनः ।
तथा हि वर्तते मन्दः सुयोधनमते स्थितः ॥२१॥
21. nāyaṁ bibhetyupakrośādadharmādvā purocanaḥ ,
tathā hi vartate mandaḥ suyodhanamate sthitaḥ.
21. na ayam bibheti upakrośāt adharmāt vā purocanaḥ
tathā hi vartate mandaḥ suyodhana mate sthitaḥ
21. "This Purocana does not fear censure or unrighteousness (adharma). Indeed, that foolish man acts strictly according to Suyodhana's wishes."
अपि चेह प्रदग्धेषु भीष्मोऽस्मासु पितामहः ।
कोपं कुर्यात्किमर्थं वा कौरवान्कोपयेत सः ।
धर्म इत्येव कुप्येत तथान्ये कुरुपुंगवाः ॥२२॥
22. api ceha pradagdheṣu bhīṣmo'smāsu pitāmahaḥ ,
kopaṁ kuryātkimarthaṁ vā kauravānkopayeta saḥ ,
dharma ityeva kupyeta tathānye kurupuṁgavāḥ.
22. api ca iha pradagdheṣu bhīṣmaḥ asmāsu
pitāmahaḥ kopam kuryāt kim artham
vā kauravān kopayeta saḥ dharmaḥ iti
eva kupyeta tathā anye kurupuṅgavāḥ
22. "Even if we were burned here, why would Grandfather Bhīṣma become angry with us? And for what reason would he anger the Kauravas? He would only become angry on account of righteousness (dharma), and so would other foremost Kuru warriors."
वयं तु यदि दाहस्य बिभ्यतः प्रद्रवेम हि ।
स्पशैर्नो घातयेत्सार्वान्राज्यलुब्धः सुयोधनः ॥२३॥
23. vayaṁ tu yadi dāhasya bibhyataḥ pradravema hi ,
spaśairno ghātayetsārvānrājyalubdhaḥ suyodhanaḥ.
23. vayam tu yadi dāhasya bibhyataḥ pradravema hi
sparśaiḥ naḥ ghātayet sarvān rājyalubdhaḥ suyodhanaḥ
23. But if we, fearing this fire, were to flee, Suyodhana, greedy for the kingdom, would certainly have all of us killed by his spies.
अपदस्थान्पदे तिष्ठन्नपक्षान्पक्षसंस्थितः ।
हीनकोशान्महाकोशः प्रयोगैर्घातयेद्ध्रुवम् ॥२४॥
24. apadasthānpade tiṣṭhannapakṣānpakṣasaṁsthitaḥ ,
hīnakośānmahākośaḥ prayogairghātayeddhruvam.
24. apadasthān pade tiṣṭhan apakṣān pakṣasaṃsthitaḥ
hīnakośān mahākośaḥ prayogaiḥ ghātayet dhruvam
24. He, being firmly established in his position while we are vulnerable, having strong allies while we have none, and possessing a vast treasury while ours is depleted, would surely have us killed through various stratagems.
तदस्माभिरिमं पापं तं च पापं सुयोधनम् ।
वञ्चयद्भिर्निवस्तव्यं छन्नवासं क्वचित्क्वचित् ॥२५॥
25. tadasmābhirimaṁ pāpaṁ taṁ ca pāpaṁ suyodhanam ,
vañcayadbhirnivastavyaṁ channavāsaṁ kvacitkvacit.
25. tat asmābhiḥ imam pāpam tam ca pāpam suyodhanam
vañcayadbhiḥ nivastavyam channavāsam kvacit kvacit
25. Therefore, we must deceive both this evil (burning) house and that wicked Suyodhana. We should dwell in hiding, moving from place to place.
ते वयं मृगयाशीलाश्चराम वसुधामिमाम् ।
तथा नो विदिता मार्गा भविष्यन्ति पलायताम् ॥२६॥
26. te vayaṁ mṛgayāśīlāścarāma vasudhāmimām ,
tathā no viditā mārgā bhaviṣyanti palāyatām.
26. te vayam mṛgayāśīlāḥ carāma vasudhām imām
tathā naḥ viditāḥ mārgāḥ bhaviṣyanti palāyatām
26. Let us, being fond of hunting, roam this earth. This way, the paths will become known to us for when we have to flee.
भौमं च बिलमद्यैव करवाम सुसंवृतम् ।
गूढोच्छ्वसान्न नस्तत्र हुताशः संप्रधक्ष्यति ॥२७॥
27. bhaumaṁ ca bilamadyaiva karavāma susaṁvṛtam ,
gūḍhocchvasānna nastatra hutāśaḥ saṁpradhakṣyati.
27. bhaumam ca bilam adya eva karavāma susaṃvṛtam
gūḍhocchvasāt na naḥ tatra hutāśaḥ sampradhakṣyati
27. And today itself, let us construct a well-concealed underground burrow. With a hidden vent for air, the fire will not be able to burn us completely there.
वसतोऽत्र यथा चास्मान्न बुध्येत पुरोचनः ।
पौरो वापि जनः कश्चित्तथा कार्यमतन्द्रितैः ॥२८॥
28. vasato'tra yathā cāsmānna budhyeta purocanaḥ ,
pauro vāpi janaḥ kaścittathā kāryamatandritaiḥ.
28. vasataḥ atra yathā ca asmān na budhyeta purocanaḥ
pauraḥ vā api janaḥ kaścit tathā kāryam atandritaiḥ
28. This task should be diligently performed so that neither Purocana nor any other citizen becomes aware of our dwelling here.
