सुदूरमन्वयुः पार्थाः पाञ्चालाः सह सोमकैः ॥१॥

1. Sañjaya spoke: As the Pāṇḍavas' battle formations were being agitated from various directions, the Pārthas, the Pāñcālas, and the Somakas pursued their enemies very far.
वर्तमाने तथा रौद्रे संग्रामे लोमहर्षणे ।
प्रक्षये जगतस्तीव्रे युगान्त इव भारत ॥२॥
2. vartamāne tathā raudre saṁgrāme lomaharṣaṇe ,
prakṣaye jagatastīvre yugānta iva bhārata.

2. O Bhārata, as that terrible, hair-raising battle raged on, with the world experiencing such intense destruction, it was like the dissolution at the end of an age.
द्रोणे युधि पराक्रान्ते नर्दमाने मुहुर्मुहुः ।
पाञ्चालेषु च क्षीणेषु वध्यमानेषु पाण्डुषु ॥३॥
3. droṇe yudhi parākrānte nardamāne muhurmuhuḥ ,
pāñcāleṣu ca kṣīṇeṣu vadhyamāneṣu pāṇḍuṣu.

3. While Droṇa displayed his valor in battle, repeatedly roaring, and as the Pāñcālas were exhausted and the Pāṇḍavas were being slaughtered.
नापश्यच्छरणं किंचिद्धर्मराजो युधिष्ठिरः ।
चिन्तयामास राजेन्द्र कथमेतद्भविष्यति ॥४॥
4. nāpaśyaccharaṇaṁ kiṁciddharmarājo yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ,
cintayāmāsa rājendra kathametadbhaviṣyati.
4. na apaśyat śaraṇam kiñcit dharmarājaḥ yudhiṣṭhiraḥ
cintayāmāsa rājendra katham etat bhaviṣyati

4. Yudhiṣṭhira, the king of natural law (dharmarāja), found no refuge whatsoever. O best of kings, he pondered: "How will this turn out?"
तत्रावेक्ष्य दिशः सर्वाः सव्यसाचिदिदृक्षया ।
युधिष्ठिरो ददर्शाथ नैव पार्थं न माधवम् ॥५॥
5. tatrāvekṣya diśaḥ sarvāḥ savyasācididṛkṣayā ,
yudhiṣṭhiro dadarśātha naiva pārthaṁ na mādhavam.
5. tatra āvekṣya diśaḥ sarvāḥ savyasāci-didṛkṣayā
yudhiṣṭhiraḥ dadarśa atha na eva pārtham na mādhavam
5. yudhiṣṭhiraḥ tatra sarvāḥ diśaḥ savyasāci-didṛkṣayā āvekṣya atha pārtham na mādhavam na eva dadarśa.
5. There, looking in all directions with the desire to see Arjuna (savyasācin), Yudhishthira then saw neither Arjuna (pārtha) nor Krishna (mādhava).
सोऽपश्यन्नरशार्दूलं वानरर्षभलक्षणम् ।
गाण्डीवस्य च निर्घोषमशृण्वन्व्यथितेन्द्रियः ॥६॥
6. so'paśyannaraśārdūlaṁ vānararṣabhalakṣaṇam ,
gāṇḍīvasya ca nirghoṣamaśṛṇvanvyathitendriyaḥ.
6. saḥ apaśyan naraśārdūlam vānararṣabha-lakṣaṇam
gāṇḍīvasya ca nirghoṣam aśṛṇvan vyathita-indriyaḥ
6. saḥ naraśārdūlam vānararṣabha-lakṣaṇam apaśyan,
ca gāṇḍīvasya nirghoṣam aśṛṇvan,
vyathita-indriyaḥ (abhūt).
6. Not seeing that tiger among men (naraśārdūla) who bore the emblem of the best of monkeys (vānararṣabhalakṣaṇam), and not hearing the sound of the Gāṇḍīva [bow], his senses became distressed.
अपश्यन्सात्यकिं चापि वृष्णीनां प्रवरं रथम् ।
चिन्तयाभिपरीताङ्गो धर्मराजो युधिष्ठिरः ।
नाध्यगच्छत्तदा शान्तिं तावपश्यन्नरर्षभौ ॥७॥
7. apaśyansātyakiṁ cāpi vṛṣṇīnāṁ pravaraṁ ratham ,
cintayābhiparītāṅgo dharmarājo yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ,
nādhyagacchattadā śāntiṁ tāvapaśyannararṣabhau.
7. apaśyan sātyakim ca api vṛṣṇīnām pravaram
ratham cintayā abhiparīta-aṅgaḥ
dharma-rājaḥ yudhiṣṭhiraḥ na adhi-agacchat
tadā śāntim tau apaśyan nara-ṛṣabhau
7. dharma-rājaḥ yudhiṣṭhiraḥ sātyakim ca api vṛṣṇīnām pravaram ratham apaśyan.
(saḥ) cintayā abhiparīta-aṅgaḥ tau nara-ṛṣabhau apaśyan tadā śāntim na adhi-agacchat.
7. Not seeing Sātyaki, the foremost charioteer (ratham) of the Vṛṣṇis, the King of righteousness (dharmarāja) Yudhishthira, whose body was overcome with anxiety, did not find peace at that time, as he did not see those two best of men (nararṣabhau).
लोकोपक्रोशभीरुत्वाद्धर्मराजो महायशाः ।
अचिन्तयन्महाबाहुः शैनेयस्य रथं प्रति ॥८॥
8. lokopakrośabhīrutvāddharmarājo mahāyaśāḥ ,
acintayanmahābāhuḥ śaineyasya rathaṁ prati.
8. loka-upakrośa-bhīrutvāt dharma-rājaḥ mahā-yaśāḥ
acintayan mahā-bāhuḥ śaineyasya ratham prati
8. loka-upakrośa-bhīrutvāt dharma-rājaḥ mahā-yaśāḥ mahā-bāhuḥ (yudhiṣṭhiraḥ) śaineyasya ratham prati acintayan.
8. Due to his fear of public criticism (lokopakrośabhīrutvāt), the greatly renowned (mahāyaśāḥ) King of righteousness (dharmarāja), the mighty-armed (mahābāhu) Yudhishthira, pondered concerning Śaineya's (Sātyaki's) chariot.
पदवीं प्रेषितश्चैव फल्गुनस्य मया रणे ।
शैनेयः सात्यकिः सत्यो मित्राणामभयंकरः ॥९॥
9. padavīṁ preṣitaścaiva phalgunasya mayā raṇe ,
śaineyaḥ sātyakiḥ satyo mitrāṇāmabhayaṁkaraḥ.
9. padavīm preṣitaḥ ca eva phālgunasya mayā raṇe
śaineyaḥ sātyakiḥ satyaḥ mitrāṇām abhayaṃkaraḥ

9. Sātyaki, the son of Śini, who is truthful and a giver of fearlessness to his friends, was indeed dispatched by me into battle to follow Arjuna's (phālguna) path.
तदिदं ह्येकमेवासीद्द्विधा जातं ममाद्य वै ।
सात्यकिश्च हि मे ज्ञेयः पाण्डवश्च धनंजयः ॥१०॥
10. tadidaṁ hyekamevāsīddvidhā jātaṁ mamādya vai ,
sātyakiśca hi me jñeyaḥ pāṇḍavaśca dhanaṁjayaḥ.
10. tat idam hi ekam eva āsīt dvidhā jātam mama adya
vai sātyakiḥ ca hi me jñeyaḥ pāṇḍavaḥ ca dhanaṃjayaḥ
10. hi tat idam ekam eva āsīt adya vai mama dvidhā jātam
sātyakiḥ ca hi me jñeyaḥ pāṇḍavaḥ dhanaṃjayaḥ ca
10. Indeed, this very (situation), which was once singular, has now become twofold for me today. For Sātyaki is to be regarded as mine, and so is Arjuna (the Pāṇḍava, Dhanaṃjaya).
सात्यकिं प्रेषयित्वा तु पाण्डवस्य पदानुगम् ।
सात्वतस्यापि कं युद्धे प्रेषयिष्ये पदानुगम् ॥११॥
11. sātyakiṁ preṣayitvā tu pāṇḍavasya padānugam ,
sātvatasyāpi kaṁ yuddhe preṣayiṣye padānugam.
11. sātyakim preṣayitvā tu pāṇḍavasya padānugam
sātvatasya api kam yuddhe preṣayiṣye padānugam
11. tu pāṇḍavasya padānugam sātyakim preṣayitvā
api sātvatasya padānugam kam yuddhe preṣayiṣye
11. However, having sent Sātyaki as a follower of the Pāṇḍava (Arjuna), whom indeed will I then send into battle as a follower for this very Sātyaki (the Sātvata clansman)?
करिष्यामि प्रयत्नेन भ्रातुरन्वेषणं यदि ।
युयुधानमनन्विष्य लोको मां गर्हयिष्यति ॥१२॥
12. kariṣyāmi prayatnena bhrāturanveṣaṇaṁ yadi ,
yuyudhānamananviṣya loko māṁ garhayiṣyati.
12. kariṣyāmi prayatnena bhrātuḥ anveṣaṇam yadi
yuyudhānam ananviṣya lokaḥ mām garhayiṣyati
12. yadi prayatnena bhrātuḥ anveṣaṇam kariṣyāmi (ca)

12. If I diligently undertake the search for (my) brother, but do not search for Yuyudhāna (Sātyaki), then people will indeed censure me.
भ्रातुरन्वेषणं कृत्वा धर्मराजो युधिष्ठिरः ।
परित्यजति वार्ष्णेयं सात्यकिं सत्यविक्रमम् ॥१३॥
13. bhrāturanveṣaṇaṁ kṛtvā dharmarājo yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ,
parityajati vārṣṇeyaṁ sātyakiṁ satyavikramam.
13. bhrātuḥ anveṣaṇam kṛtvā dharmarājaḥ yudhiṣṭhiraḥ
parityajati vārṣṇeyam sātyakim satyavikramam
13. dharmarājaḥ yudhiṣṭhiraḥ bhrātuḥ anveṣaṇam kṛtvā

13. After searching for his brother, Yudhishthira, the king who embodies natural law (dharma), abandons Satyaki, the descendant of Vrishni, whose valor is truly mighty.
लोकापवादभीरुत्वात्सोऽहं पार्थं वृकोदरम् ।
पदवीं प्रेषयिष्यामि माधवस्य महात्मनः ॥१४॥
14. lokāpavādabhīrutvātso'haṁ pārthaṁ vṛkodaram ,
padavīṁ preṣayiṣyāmi mādhavasya mahātmanaḥ.
14. lokāpavādabhīrutvāt saḥ aham pārtham vṛkodaram
padavīm preṣayiṣyāmi mādhavasya mahātmanaḥ
14. saḥ aham lokāpavādabhīrutvāt pārtham vṛkodaram

14. Because of my fear of public criticism, I will send Partha (Arjuna) and Vrikodara (Bhima) to follow the path of the great-souled Madhava (Krishna).
यथैव च मम प्रीतिरर्जुने शत्रुसूदने ।
तथैव वृष्णिवीरेऽपि सात्वते युद्धदुर्मदे ॥१५॥
15. yathaiva ca mama prītirarjune śatrusūdane ,
tathaiva vṛṣṇivīre'pi sātvate yuddhadurmade.
15. yathā eva ca mama prītiḥ arjune śatrusūdane
tathā eva vṛṣṇivīre api sātvate yuddhadurmade
15. yathā eva ca mama prītiḥ śatrusūdane arjune (asti)
tathā eva api yuddhadurmade vṛṣṇivīre sātvate (asti)
15. Just as my affection (prīti) is for Arjuna, the destroyer of foes, similarly it is for the Vrishni hero, Satvata (Satyaki), who is invincible in battle.
अतिभारे नियुक्तश्च मया शैनेयनन्दनः ।
स तु मित्रोपरोधेन गौरवाच्च महाबलः ।
प्रविष्टो भारतीं सेनां मकरः सागरं यथा ॥१६॥
16. atibhāre niyuktaśca mayā śaineyanandanaḥ ,
sa tu mitroparodhena gauravācca mahābalaḥ ,
praviṣṭo bhāratīṁ senāṁ makaraḥ sāgaraṁ yathā.
16. atibhāre niyuktaḥ ca mayā
śaineyanandanaḥ saḥ tu mitroparodhena
gauravāt ca mahābalaḥ praviṣṭaḥ
bhāratīm senām makaraḥ sāgaram yathā
16. ca mayā śaineyanandanaḥ atibhāre
niyuktaḥ tu saḥ mahābalaḥ mitroparodhena
ca gauravāt makaraḥ sāgaram
yathā bhāratīm senām praviṣṭaḥ
16. And the son of Shini (Satyaki) was entrusted with a great responsibility by me. But that immensely powerful one, compelled by friendship and out of respect, entered the Bharata army, just as a sea monster (makara) enters the ocean.
असौ हि श्रूयते शब्दः शूराणामनिवर्तिनाम् ।
मिथः संयुध्यमानानां वृष्णिवीरेण धीमता ॥१७॥
17. asau hi śrūyate śabdaḥ śūrāṇāmanivartinām ,
mithaḥ saṁyudhyamānānāṁ vṛṣṇivīreṇa dhīmatā.
17. asau hi śrūyate śabdaḥ śūrāṇām anivartinām
mithaḥ saṃyudhyamānānām vṛṣṇivīreṇa dhīmatā
17. hi asau śabdaḥ śrūyate anivartinām śūrāṇām
dhīmatā vṛṣṇivīreṇa mithaḥ saṃyudhyamānānām
17. Indeed, that sound is heard, (the sound) of unretreating heroes who are fighting amongst themselves with the intelligent Vṛṣṇi hero.
प्राप्तकालं सुबलवन्निश्चित्य बहुधा हि मे ।
तत्रैव पाण्डवेयस्य भीमसेनस्य धन्विनः ।
गमनं रोचते मह्यं यत्र यातौ महारथौ ॥१८॥
18. prāptakālaṁ subalavanniścitya bahudhā hi me ,
tatraiva pāṇḍaveyasya bhīmasenasya dhanvinaḥ ,
gamanaṁ rocate mahyaṁ yatra yātau mahārathau.
18. prāptakālam subalavat niścitya
bahudhā hi me tatra eva pāṇḍaveyasya
bhīmasenasya dhanvinaḥ gamanam
rocate mahyam yatra yātau mahārathau
18. hi me bahudhā prāptakālam subalavat niścitya,
tatra eva dhanvinaḥ pāṇḍaveyasya bhīmasenasya gamanam mahyam rocate,
yatra mahārathau yātau
18. Indeed, having ascertained in many ways what is timely and very potent, it is agreeable to me that Bhīmasena, the archer son of Pāṇḍu, should go to that very place where the two great charioteers have gone.
न चाप्यसह्यं भीमस्य विद्यते भुवि किंचन ।
शक्तो ह्येष रणे यत्तान्पृथिव्यां सर्वधन्विनः ।
स्वबाहुबलमास्थाय प्रतिव्यूहितुमञ्जसा ॥१९॥
19. na cāpyasahyaṁ bhīmasya vidyate bhuvi kiṁcana ,
śakto hyeṣa raṇe yattānpṛthivyāṁ sarvadhanvinaḥ ,
svabāhubalamāsthāya prativyūhitumañjasā.
19. na ca api asahyam bhīmasya vidyate
bhuvi kiṃcana śaktaḥ hi eṣaḥ raṇe
yattān pṛthivyām sarvadhanvinaḥ
svabāhubalam āsthāya prativyūhitum añjasā
19. ca api hi eṣaḥ bhīmasya bhuvi kiṃcana
asahyam na vidyate; eṣaḥ svabāhubalam
āsthāya raṇe pṛthivyām yattān
sarvadhanvinaḥ añjasā prativyūhitum śaktaḥ
19. And indeed, there is nothing on earth that is unbearable or unconquerable for Bhīma. For, relying on his own arm strength, he is capable of directly repelling all the striving archers on earth in battle.
यस्य बाहुबलं सर्वे समाश्रित्य महात्मनः ।
वनवासान्निवृत्ताः स्म न च युद्धेषु निर्जिताः ॥२०॥
20. yasya bāhubalaṁ sarve samāśritya mahātmanaḥ ,
vanavāsānnivṛttāḥ sma na ca yuddheṣu nirjitāḥ.
20. yasya bāhubalam sarve samāśritya mahātmanaḥ
vanavāsāt nivṛttāḥ sma na ca yuddheṣu nirjitāḥ
20. sarve,
yasya mahātmanaḥ bāhubalam samāśritya,
vanavāsāt nivṛttāḥ sma,
ca yuddheṣu na nirjitāḥ
20. All of us, having relied upon the arm strength of that great-souled one, have returned from our forest dwelling, and we have not been defeated in battles.
इतो गते भीमसेने सात्वतं प्रति पाण्डवे ।
सनाथौ भवितारौ हि युधि सात्वतफल्गुनौ ॥२१॥
21. ito gate bhīmasene sātvataṁ prati pāṇḍave ,
sanāthau bhavitārau hi yudhi sātvataphalgunau.
21. itaḥ gate bhīmasene sātvatam prati pāṇḍave
sanāthau bhavitārau hi yudhi sātvataphālgunau
21. pāṇḍave bhīmasene itaḥ sātvatam prati gate,
hi sātvataphālgunau yudhi sanāthau bhavitārau
21. When Bhimasena, the Pandava, has departed from here towards Satyaki, then indeed, Satyaki and Arjuna will be well-protected in battle.
कामं त्वशोचनीयौ तौ रणे सात्वतफल्गुनौ ।
रक्षितौ वासुदेवेन स्वयं चास्त्रविशारदौ ॥२२॥
22. kāmaṁ tvaśocanīyau tau raṇe sātvataphalgunau ,
rakṣitau vāsudevena svayaṁ cāstraviśāradau.
22. kāmam tu aśocanīyau tau raṇe sātvataphālgunau
rakṣitau vāsudevena svayam ca astra-viśāradau
22. tu,
tau sātvataphālgunau raṇe kāmam aśocanīyau.
vāsudevena rakṣitau ca svayam astra-viśāradau.
22. However, those two, Satyaki and Arjuna, are certainly not to be grieved for in battle. They are protected by Vasudeva (Kṛṣṇa) and are themselves skilled in weaponry.
अवश्यं तु मया कार्यमात्मनः शोकनाशनम् ।
तस्माद्भीमं नियोक्ष्यामि सात्वतस्य पदानुगम् ।
ततः प्रतिकृतं मन्ये विधानं सात्यकिं प्रति ॥२३॥
23. avaśyaṁ tu mayā kāryamātmanaḥ śokanāśanam ,
tasmādbhīmaṁ niyokṣyāmi sātvatasya padānugam ,
tataḥ pratikṛtaṁ manye vidhānaṁ sātyakiṁ prati.
23. avaśyam tu mayā kāryam ātmanaḥ
śoka-nāśanam tasmāt bhīmam niyokṣyāmi
sātvatasya padānugam tataḥ pratikṛtam
manye vidhānam sātyakim prati
23. tu mayā ātmanaḥ śoka-nāśanam avaśyam kāryam.
tasmāt bhīmam sātvatasya padānugam niyokṣyāmi.
tataḥ sātyakim prati pratikṛtam vidhānam manye.
23. However, a means for the destruction of my own sorrow (ātman) must certainly be undertaken by me. Therefore, I will appoint Bhima to follow Satyaki. Then I consider the arrangement for requital (pratikṛtam) regarding Satyaki to be fulfilled.
एवं निश्चित्य मनसा धर्मपुत्रो युधिष्ठिरः ।
यन्तारमब्रवीद्राजन्भीमं प्रति नयस्व माम् ॥२४॥
24. evaṁ niścitya manasā dharmaputro yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ,
yantāramabravīdrājanbhīmaṁ prati nayasva mām.
24. evam niścitya manasā dharmaputraḥ yudhiṣṭhiraḥ
yantāram abravīt rājan bhīmam prati nayasva mām
24. evam manasā niścitya,
dharmaputraḥ yudhiṣṭhiraḥ yantāram abravīt,
"rājan,
mām bhīmam prati nayasva!"
24. Having thus decided in his mind, Yudhishthira, the son of Dharma (dharma), said to the charioteer, 'O King, take me towards Bhima!'
धर्मराजवचः श्रुत्वा सारथिर्हयकोविदः ।
रथं हेमपरिष्कारं भीमान्तिकमुपानयत् ॥२५॥
25. dharmarājavacaḥ śrutvā sārathirhayakovidaḥ ,
rathaṁ hemapariṣkāraṁ bhīmāntikamupānayat.
25. dharmarājavacaḥ śrutvā sārathiḥ hayakovidaḥ
ratham hemapariṣkāram bhīmantikam upānayat
25. sārathiḥ hayakovidaḥ dharmarājavacaḥ śrutvā

25. Upon hearing the words of King Yudhiṣṭhira (dharma), the charioteer, who was skilled with horses, brought the gold-adorned chariot close to Bhīma.
भीमसेनमनुप्राप्य प्राप्तकालमनुस्मरन् ।
कश्मलं प्राविशद्राजा बहु तत्र समादिशन् ॥२६॥
26. bhīmasenamanuprāpya prāptakālamanusmaran ,
kaśmalaṁ prāviśadrājā bahu tatra samādiśan.

kaśmalam prāviśat rājā bahu tatra samādiśan

26. Having reached Bhīmasena and remembering the opportune moment, the king was overcome by confusion (kaśmala), while issuing many instructions there.
यः सदेवान्सगन्धर्वान्दैत्यांश्चैकरथोऽजयत् ।
तस्य लक्ष्म न पश्यामि भीमसेनानुजस्य ते ॥२७॥
27. yaḥ sadevānsagandharvāndaityāṁścaikaratho'jayat ,
tasya lakṣma na paśyāmi bhīmasenānujasya te.
27. yaḥ sadevān sagandharvān daityān ca ekarathaḥ
ajayat tasya lakṣma na paśyāmi bhīmasenānujasya te
27. te bhīmasenānujasya yaḥ ekarathaḥ sadevān sagandharvān

27. I do not see any sign of your younger brother, Bhīmasena's brother (Arjuna), who, with a single chariot, conquered the gods, the Gandharvas, and the Daityas.
ततोऽब्रवीद्धर्मराजं भीमसेनस्तथागतम् ।
नैवाद्राक्षं न चाश्रौषं तव कश्मलमीदृशम् ॥२८॥
28. tato'bravīddharmarājaṁ bhīmasenastathāgatam ,

28. Then Bhīmasena spoke to King Yudhiṣṭhira (dharma), who had fallen into such a state: "I have neither seen nor heard of such confusion (kaśmala) from you."
पुरा हि दुःखदीर्णानां भवान्गतिरभूद्धि नः ।
उत्तिष्ठोत्तिष्ठ राजेन्द्र शाधि किं करवाणि ते ॥२९॥
29. purā hi duḥkhadīrṇānāṁ bhavāngatirabhūddhi naḥ ,
uttiṣṭhottiṣṭha rājendra śādhi kiṁ karavāṇi te.

29. Indeed, in the past, when we were overcome by sorrow, you were our only recourse. Rise up, rise up, O king of kings! Command me, what should I do for you?
न ह्यसाध्यमकार्यं वा विद्यते मम मानद ।
आज्ञापय कुरुश्रेष्ठ मा च शोके मनः कृथाः ॥३०॥
30. na hyasādhyamakāryaṁ vā vidyate mama mānada ,
ājñāpaya kuruśreṣṭha mā ca śoke manaḥ kṛthāḥ.

30. Indeed, O giver of honor, there is nothing impossible or improper for me to accomplish. Command me, O best of the Kurus, and do not let your mind dwell in sorrow.
तमब्रवीदश्रुपूर्णः कृष्णसर्प इव श्वसन् ।
भीमसेनमिदं वाक्यं प्रम्लानवदनो नृपः ॥३१॥
31. tamabravīdaśrupūrṇaḥ kṛṣṇasarpa iva śvasan ,
bhīmasenamidaṁ vākyaṁ pramlānavadano nṛpaḥ.

31. The king, his face withered and filled with tears, sighed like a black snake and spoke these words to Bhimasena.
यथा शङ्खस्य निर्घोषः पाञ्चजन्यस्य श्रूयते ।
प्रेरितो वासुदेवेन संरब्धेन यशस्विना ।
नूनमद्य हतः शेते तव भ्राता धनंजयः ॥३२॥
32. yathā śaṅkhasya nirghoṣaḥ pāñcajanyasya śrūyate ,
prerito vāsudevena saṁrabdhena yaśasvinā ,
nūnamadya hataḥ śete tava bhrātā dhanaṁjayaḥ.

32. Just as the sound of the conch Pāñcajanya is heard, blown by the enraged and glorious Vāsudeva (Kṛṣṇa), surely today your brother Dhanañjaya (Arjuna) lies slain.
तस्मिन्विनिहते नूनं युध्यतेऽसौ जनार्दनः ।
यस्य सत्त्ववतो वीर्यमुपजीवन्ति पाण्डवाः ॥३३॥
33. tasminvinihate nūnaṁ yudhyate'sau janārdanaḥ ,
yasya sattvavato vīryamupajīvanti pāṇḍavāḥ.

33. If he is certainly slain, then that Janardana (Kṛṣṇa) will surely fight, for the Pāṇḍavas rely on the prowess of that courageous one.
यं भयेष्वभिगच्छन्ति सहस्राक्षमिवामराः ।
स शूरः सैन्धवप्रेप्सुरन्वयाद्भारतीं चमूम् ॥३४॥
34. yaṁ bhayeṣvabhigacchanti sahasrākṣamivāmarāḥ ,
sa śūraḥ saindhavaprepsuranvayādbhāratīṁ camūm.

34. Whom the gods approach in times of danger, just as they approach Sahasrākṣa (Indra) – that hero, eager to find Saṃdhava (Jayadratha), pursued the Bhārata army.
तस्य वै गमनं विद्मो भीम नावर्तनं पुनः ।
श्यामो युवा गुडाकेशो दर्शनीयो महाभुजः ॥३५॥
35. tasya vai gamanaṁ vidmo bhīma nāvartanaṁ punaḥ ,
śyāmo yuvā guḍākeśo darśanīyo mahābhujaḥ.

35. O Bhīma, we know that his going forth means there will be no return. (He is) dark-complexioned, young, Guḍākeśa (conqueror of sleep), handsome, and mighty-armed.
व्यूढोरस्को महास्कन्धो मत्तद्विरदविक्रमः ।
चकोरनेत्रस्ताम्राक्षो द्विषतामघवर्धनः ॥३६॥
36. vyūḍhorasko mahāskandho mattadviradavikramaḥ ,
cakoranetrastāmrākṣo dviṣatāmaghavardhanaḥ.

36. He is broad-chested, broad-shouldered, with the valor of a rutting elephant; his eyes are like those of a cakora bird, yet coppery-red, and he increases the misfortune of his foes.
तदिदं मम भद्रं ते शोकस्थानमरिंदम ।
अर्जुनार्थं महाबाहो सात्वतस्य च कारणात् ॥३७॥
37. tadidaṁ mama bhadraṁ te śokasthānamariṁdama ,
arjunārthaṁ mahābāho sātvatasya ca kāraṇāt.

37. O suppressor of enemies, O mighty-armed one, this situation is my cause of sorrow. May good fortune be yours. This sorrow arises for Arjuna's sake and for the Sātvata's (Kṛṣṇa's) sake.
वर्धते हविषेवाग्निरिध्यमानः पुनः पुनः ।
तस्य लक्ष्म न पश्यामि तेन विन्दामि कश्मलम् ॥३८॥
38. vardhate haviṣevāgniridhyamānaḥ punaḥ punaḥ ,
tasya lakṣma na paśyāmi tena vindāmi kaśmalam.

38. This (sorrow) grows again and again, like a fire fed by oblation (yajña) being kindled. I do not see any sign of its resolution; thereby, I experience confusion and distress.
तं विद्धि पुरुषव्याघ्रं सात्वतं च महारथम् ।
स तं महारथं पश्चादनुयातस्तवानुजम् ।
तमपश्यन्महाबाहुमहं विन्दामि कश्मलम् ॥३९॥
39. taṁ viddhi puruṣavyāghraṁ sātvataṁ ca mahāratham ,
sa taṁ mahārathaṁ paścādanuyātastavānujam ,
tamapaśyanmahābāhumahaṁ vindāmi kaśmalam.

39. Know him, the tiger among men (puruṣa), and the Sātvata (Kṛṣṇa), the great chariot-warrior. He (Arjuna) followed that great chariot-warrior (Kṛṣṇa) behind. Not seeing him, the mighty-armed one (Kṛṣṇa), and (not seeing) your younger brother (Arjuna), I experience confusion and distress.
तस्मात्कृष्णो रणे नूनं युध्यते युद्धकोविदः ।
यस्य वीर्यवतो वीर्यमुपजीवन्ति पाण्डवाः ॥४०॥
40. tasmātkṛṣṇo raṇe nūnaṁ yudhyate yuddhakovidaḥ ,
yasya vīryavato vīryamupajīvanti pāṇḍavāḥ.

40. Therefore, Kṛṣṇa, who is skilled in warfare, certainly fights in battle. The Pāṇḍavas depend on the strength and valor of that powerful one.
स तत्र गच्छ कौन्तेय यत्र यातो धनंजयः ।
सात्यकिश्च महावीर्यः कर्तव्यं यदि मन्यसे ।
वचनं मम धर्मज्ञ ज्येष्ठो भ्राता भवामि ते ॥४१॥
41. sa tatra gaccha kaunteya yatra yāto dhanaṁjayaḥ ,
sātyakiśca mahāvīryaḥ kartavyaṁ yadi manyase ,
vacanaṁ mama dharmajña jyeṣṭho bhrātā bhavāmi te.
41. सः तत्र गच्छ कौन्तेय यत्र यातः
धनंजयः सात्यकिः च महावीर्यः
कर्तव्यम् यदि मन्यसे वचनम् मम
धर्मज्ञ ज्येष्ठः भ्राता भवामि ते
41. कौन्तेय धर्मज्ञ,
यदि ते मम वचनम् कर्तव्यम् मन्यसे,
सः तत्र गच्छ यत्र धनंजयः च महावीर्यः सात्यकिः यातः ज्येष्ठः भ्राता ते भवामि ।
41. O son of Kunti (Kaunteya), O knower of natural law (dharma), if you consider my words to be your duty, then go there where Dhananjaya (Arjuna) and the mighty Satyaki have gone. I am your elder brother.
न तेऽर्जुनस्तथा ज्ञेयो ज्ञातव्यः सात्यकिर्यथा ।
चिकीर्षुर्मत्प्रियं पार्थ प्रयातः सव्यसाचिनः ।
पदवीं दुर्गमां घोरामगम्यामकृतात्मभिः ॥४२॥
42. na te'rjunastathā jñeyo jñātavyaḥ sātyakiryathā ,
cikīrṣurmatpriyaṁ pārtha prayātaḥ savyasācinaḥ ,
padavīṁ durgamāṁ ghorāmagamyāmakṛtātmabhiḥ.
42. न ते अर्जुनः तथा ज्ञेयः ज्ञातव्यः
सात्यकिः यथा चिकीर्षुः मत् प्रियम्
पार्थ प्रयातः सव्यसाचिनः पदवीम्
दुर्गमाम् घोराम् अगम्याम् अकृतात्मभिः
42. पार्थ,
ते अर्जुनः तथा न ज्ञेयः यथा सात्यकिः ज्ञातव्यः मत् प्रियम् चिकीर्षुः सः सव्यसाचिनः दुर्गमाम् घोराम् अकृतात्मभिः अगम्याम् पदवीम् प्रयातः [अस्ति] ।
42. O son of Pṛthā (Pārtha), Arjuna should not be considered by you in the same way as Satyaki should be known. Desiring to do what is dear to me, Satyaki has gone on a difficult, dreadful path (padavī) that is unattainable for those whose minds are not prepared, following the path of Savyasācin (Arjuna).
भीमसेन उवाच ।
ब्रह्मेशानेन्द्रवरुणानवहद्यः पुरा रथः ।
तमास्थाय गतौ कृष्णौ न तयोर्विद्यते भयम् ॥४३॥
43. bhīmasena uvāca ,
brahmeśānendravaruṇānavahadyaḥ purā rathaḥ ,
tamāsthāya gatau kṛṣṇau na tayorvidyate bhayam.
43. भीमसेनः उवाच ब्रह्मेशानेन्द्रवरुणान् अवहत् यः पुरा
रथः तम् आस्थाय गतौ कृष्णौ न तयोः विद्यते भयम्

कृष्णौ तम् आस्थाय गतौ तयोः भयम् न विद्यते ।
43. Bhīmasena said: The chariot which formerly carried Brahmā, Īśāna (Śiva), Indra, and Varuṇa – having ascended that very chariot, the two Kṛṣṇas (Kṛṣṇa and Arjuna) have departed. There is no fear for them.
आज्ञां तु शिरसा बिभ्रदेष गच्छामि मा शुचः ।
समेत्य तान्नरव्याघ्रांस्तव दास्यामि संविदम् ॥४४॥
44. ājñāṁ tu śirasā bibhradeṣa gacchāmi mā śucaḥ ,
sametya tānnaravyāghrāṁstava dāsyāmi saṁvidam.
44. आज्ञाम् तु शिरसा बिभ्रत् एषः गच्छामि मा शुचः
समेत्य तान् नरव्याघ्रान् तव दास्यामि संविदम्
44. एषः तु तव आज्ञाम् शिरसा बिभ्रत् गच्छामि मा शुचः तान् नरव्याघ्रान् समेत्य संविदम् दास्यामि ।
44. But I, bearing your command on my head, go forth. Do not grieve! Having met those tiger-like men (heroes), I will deliver your message.
संजय उवाच ।
एतावदुक्त्वा प्रययौ परिदाय युधिष्ठिरम् ।
धृष्टद्युम्नाय बलवान्सुहृद्भ्यश्च पुनः पुनः ।
धृष्टद्युम्नं चेदमाह भीमसेनो महाबलः ॥४५॥
45. saṁjaya uvāca ,
etāvaduktvā prayayau paridāya yudhiṣṭhiram ,
dhṛṣṭadyumnāya balavānsuhṛdbhyaśca punaḥ punaḥ ,
dhṛṣṭadyumnaṁ cedamāha bhīmaseno mahābalaḥ.
45. sañjaya uvāca etāvat uktvā prayayau
paridāya yudhiṣṭhiram dhṛṣṭadyumnāya
balavān suhṛdbhyaḥ ca punaḥ punaḥ dhṛṣṭadyumnam
ca idam āha bhīmasenaḥ mahābalaḥ
45. sañjaya uvāca balavān mahābalaḥ bhīmasenaḥ
etāvat uktvā yudhiṣṭhiram dhṛṣṭadyumnāya
suhṛdbhyaḥ ca punaḥ punaḥ paridāya
prayayau ca dhṛṣṭadyumnam idam āha
45. Sañjaya said: Having spoken these words, the powerful Bhīmasena departed, repeatedly entrusting Yudhiṣṭhira to Dhṛṣṭadyumna and his friends. Furthermore, the mighty Bhīmasena then said this to Dhṛṣṭadyumna:
विदितं ते महाबाहो यथा द्रोणो महारथः ।
ग्रहणे धर्मराजस्य सर्वोपायेन वर्तते ॥४६॥
46. viditaṁ te mahābāho yathā droṇo mahārathaḥ ,
grahaṇe dharmarājasya sarvopāyena vartate.

46. O mighty-armed one, you know how Droṇa, the great chariot-warrior, is employing every possible means for the capture of the king of natural law (dharma-rāja).

यादृशं रक्षणे राज्ञः कार्यमात्ययिकं हि नः ॥४७॥
47. na ca me gamane kṛtyaṁ tādṛkpārṣata vidyate ,
yādṛśaṁ rakṣaṇe rājñaḥ kāryamātyayikaṁ hi naḥ.

47. O Pārṣata, my task in going [to fight Droṇa] is not as important as the urgent duty we have in protecting the king.
एवमुक्तोऽस्मि पार्थेन प्रतिवक्तुं स्म नोत्सहे ।
प्रयास्ये तत्र यत्रासौ मुमूर्षुः सैन्धवः स्थितः ।
धर्मराजस्य वचने स्थातव्यमविशङ्कया ॥४८॥
48. evamukto'smi pārthena prativaktuṁ sma notsahe ,
prayāsye tatra yatrāsau mumūrṣuḥ saindhavaḥ sthitaḥ ,
dharmarājasya vacane sthātavyamaviśaṅkayā.

48. I have been thus addressed by Arjuna, and I do not dare to respond. I will go to where that Jayadratha (Saindhava), who is doomed to die, is located. The command of the king of natural law (dharma-rāja) must be obeyed without any hesitation.
सोऽद्य यत्तो रणे पार्थं परिरक्ष युधिष्ठिरम् ।
एतद्धि सर्वकार्याणां परमं कृत्यमाहवे ॥४९॥
49. so'dya yatto raṇe pārthaṁ parirakṣa yudhiṣṭhiram ,
etaddhi sarvakāryāṇāṁ paramaṁ kṛtyamāhave.

etat hi sarvakāryāṇām paramam kṛtyam āhave

49. You, diligent in battle today, protect Arjuna (Pārtha) and Yudhishthira. This indeed is the supreme duty (kṛtya) among all tasks in warfare.
तमब्रवीन्महाराज धृष्टद्युम्नो वृकोदरम् ।
ईप्सितेन महाबाहो गच्छ पार्थाविचारयन् ॥५०॥
50. tamabravīnmahārāja dhṛṣṭadyumno vṛkodaram ,
īpsitena mahābāho gaccha pārthāvicārayan.

50. O great king (mahārāja), Dhṛṣṭadyumna said to Vṛkodara (Bhīma): 'O mighty-armed one (mahābāhu), O son of Pṛthā (Pārtha), go for what is desired, without hesitation!'
नाहत्वा समरे द्रोणो धृष्टद्युम्नं कथंचन ।
निग्रहं धर्मराजस्य प्रकरिष्यति संयुगे ॥५१॥
51. nāhatvā samare droṇo dhṛṣṭadyumnaṁ kathaṁcana ,
nigrahaṁ dharmarājasya prakariṣyati saṁyuge.

51. Droṇa will certainly not accomplish the capture (nigraha) of Yudhishthira (Dharmarāja) in battle (saṃyuga) in any way, without first killing Dhṛṣṭadyumna in combat (samara).

अभिवाद्य गुरुं ज्येष्ठं प्रययौ यत्र फल्गुनः ॥५२॥

52. Then that Pāṇḍava (Bhīma), having entrusted King Yudhishthira (rājānam) to Dhṛṣṭadyumna, and having saluted his eldest guru (guru), departed to where Arjuna (Phalguna) was.
परिष्वक्तस्तु कौन्तेयो धर्मराजेन भारत ।
आघ्रातश्च तथा मूर्ध्नि श्रावितश्चाशिषः शुभाः ॥५३॥
53. pariṣvaktastu kaunteyo dharmarājena bhārata ,
āghrātaśca tathā mūrdhni śrāvitaścāśiṣaḥ śubhāḥ.

53. bhārata kaunteyaḥ dharmarājena pariṣvaktaḥ tu

53. O Bhārata, the son of Kunti was embraced by the king of natural law (dharma), and similarly kissed on the head, and made to hear auspicious blessings.
भीमसेनो महाबाहुः कवची शुभकुण्डली ।
साङ्गदः सतनुत्राणः सशरी रथिनां वरः ॥५४॥
54. bhīmaseno mahābāhuḥ kavacī śubhakuṇḍalī ,

54. Bhimasena, the mighty-armed, was armored, adorned with auspicious earrings, wearing armlets and body-armor, equipped with arrows, and was the best among charioteers.
तस्य कार्ष्णायसं वर्म हेमचित्रं महर्द्धिमत् ।
विबभौ पर्वतश्लिष्टः सविद्युदिव तोयदः ॥५५॥
55. tasya kārṣṇāyasaṁ varma hemacitraṁ maharddhimat ,

55. His armor, made of black iron, adorned with gold, and magnificent, shone like a rain-cloud (toyada) clinging to a mountain and accompanied by lightning.
पीतरक्तासितसितैर्वासोभिश्च सुवेष्टितः ।
कण्ठत्राणेन च बभौ सेन्द्रायुध इवाम्बुदः ॥५६॥
56. pītaraktāsitasitairvāsobhiśca suveṣṭitaḥ ,

56. Well-wrapped in yellow, red, black, and white garments, and with a neck-guard, he shone like a cloud (ambuda) adorned with a rainbow.
प्रयाते भीमसेने तु तव सैन्यं युयुत्सया ।
पाञ्चजन्यरवो घोरः पुनरासीद्विशां पते ॥५७॥
57. prayāte bhīmasene tu tava sainyaṁ yuyutsayā ,

57. O lord of men, when Bhīmasena advanced, eager to fight your army, the dreadful sound of Pāñcajanya arose once more.
तं श्रुत्वा निनदं घोरं त्रैलोक्यत्रासनं महत् ।
पुनर्भीमं महाबाहुर्धर्मपुत्रोऽभ्यभाषत ॥५८॥
58. taṁ śrutvā ninadaṁ ghoraṁ trailokyatrāsanaṁ mahat ,
punarbhīmaṁ mahābāhurdharmaputro'bhyabhāṣata.

58. Having heard that great, dreadful sound, which terrified the three worlds, the mighty-armed son of (dharma) spoke to Bhīma once more.
एष वृष्णिप्रवीरेण ध्मातः सलिलजो भृशम् ।
पृथिवीं चान्तरिक्षं च विनादयति शङ्खराट् ॥५९॥
59. eṣa vṛṣṇipravīreṇa dhmātaḥ salilajo bhṛśam ,
pṛthivīṁ cāntarikṣaṁ ca vinādayati śaṅkharāṭ.

59. This king of conches (śaṅkharāṭ), Pāñcajanya, greatly blown by the hero of the Vṛṣṇis, makes both the earth and the atmosphere resound.
नूनं व्यसनमापन्ने सुमहत्सव्यसाचिनि ।
कुरुभिर्युध्यते सार्धं सर्वैश्चक्रगदाधरः ॥६०॥
60. nūnaṁ vyasanamāpanne sumahatsavyasācini ,
kurubhiryudhyate sārdhaṁ sarvaiścakragadādharaḥ.

60. Surely, when a very great calamity has befallen Arjuna (Savyasācin), the wielder of the discus and mace (Kṛṣṇa) is fighting together with all the Kurus.
नूनमार्या महत्कुन्ती पापमद्य निदर्शनम् ।
द्रौपदी च सुभद्रा च पश्यन्ति सह बन्धुभिः ॥६१॥
61. nūnamāryā mahatkuntī pāpamadya nidarśanam ,
draupadī ca subhadrā ca paśyanti saha bandhubhiḥ.

61. Surely, the noble Kunti, along with Draupadi and Subhadra and their relatives, are today witnessing this great, sinful spectacle.
स भीमस्त्वरया युक्तो याहि यत्र धनंजयः ।
मुह्यन्तीव हि मे सर्वा धनंजयदिदृक्षया ।
दिशः सप्रदिशः पार्थ सात्वतस्य च कारणात् ॥६२॥
62. sa bhīmastvarayā yukto yāhi yatra dhanaṁjayaḥ ,
muhyantīva hi me sarvā dhanaṁjayadidṛkṣayā ,
diśaḥ sapradiśaḥ pārtha sātvatasya ca kāraṇāt.

62. O Bhima, you who are endowed with speed, go to where Dhanañjaya (Arjuna) is! Indeed, O son of Pṛthā (Pārtha), all my directions, even the intermediate ones, seem bewildered due to my longing to see Dhanañjaya and because of Satvata (Krishna).
गच्छ गच्छेति च पुनर्भीमसेनमभाषत ।
भृशं स प्रहितो भ्रात्रा भ्राता भ्रातुः प्रियंकरः ।
आहत्य दुन्दुभिं भीमः शङ्खं प्रध्माय चासकृत् ॥६३॥
63. gaccha gaccheti ca punarbhīmasenamabhāṣata ,
bhṛśaṁ sa prahito bhrātrā bhrātā bhrātuḥ priyaṁkaraḥ ,
āhatya dundubhiṁ bhīmaḥ śaṅkhaṁ pradhmāya cāsakṛt.
63. gaccha gaccha iti ca punar bhīmasenam
abhāṣata bhṛśam saḥ prahitaḥ bhrātrā
bhrātā bhrātuḥ priyaṅkaraḥ āhatya dundubhim
bhīmaḥ śaṅkham pradhmāya ca asakṛt
63. punar ca (saḥ) bhīmasenam "gaccha gaccha" iti abhāṣata saḥ bhrātrā (yudhiṣṭhireṇa) bhṛśam prahitaḥ (bhīmaḥ) bhrātā (san) bhrātuḥ priyaṅkaraḥ (āsīt) bhīmaḥ dundubhim āhatya ca śaṅkham asakṛt pradhmāya.

63. And again he (the speaker, likely Yudhiṣṭhira) spoke to Bhimasena, saying 'Go! Go!' That brother (Bhima), who was dear to his brother (Yudhiṣṭhira), was vehemently dispatched by him. Having struck the war-drum and repeatedly blown the conch, Bhima...
विनद्य सिंहनादं च ज्यां विकर्षन्पुनः पुनः ।
दर्शयन्घोरमात्मानममित्रान्सहसाभ्ययात् ॥६४॥
64. vinadya siṁhanādaṁ ca jyāṁ vikarṣanpunaḥ punaḥ ,
darśayanghoramātmānamamitrānsahasābhyayāt.

64. Having let out a lion's roar and repeatedly drawing his bowstring, displaying his formidable self (ātman), he suddenly charged at his enemies.
तमूहुर्जवना दान्ता विकुर्वाणा हयोत्तमाः ।
विशोकेनाभिसंयत्ता मनोमारुतरंहसः ॥६५॥
65. tamūhurjavanā dāntā vikurvāṇā hayottamāḥ ,
viśokenābhisaṁyattā manomārutaraṁhasaḥ.

65. The swift, well-disciplined, and excellent horses, displaying their prowess, carried him (Arjuna). Yoked by Viśoka, they possessed the speed of mind and wind.
आरुजन्विरुजन्पार्थो ज्यां विकर्षंश्च पाणिना ।
सोऽवकर्षन्विकर्षंश्च सेनाग्रं समलोडयत् ॥६६॥
66. ārujanvirujanpārtho jyāṁ vikarṣaṁśca pāṇinā ,
so'vakarṣanvikarṣaṁśca senāgraṁ samaloḍayat.

66. Partha, crushing and shattering (the enemy), and drawing his bowstring with his hand, he (Arjuna), by pulling and dragging back, thoroughly agitated the vanguard of the army.
तं प्रयान्तं महाबाहुं पाञ्चालाः सहसोमकाः ।
पृष्ठतोऽनुययुः शूरा मघवन्तमिवामराः ॥६७॥
67. taṁ prayāntaṁ mahābāhuṁ pāñcālāḥ sahasomakāḥ ,
pṛṣṭhato'nuyayuḥ śūrā maghavantamivāmarāḥ.

67. The brave Panchalas, along with the Somakas, followed that mighty-armed one (Arjuna) as he went forth, just as the gods (amarāḥ) follow Indra (Maghavan).
तं ससेना महाराज सोदर्याः पर्यवारयन् ।
दुःशलश्चित्रसेनश्च कुण्डभेदी विविंशतिः ॥६८॥
68. taṁ sasenā mahārāja sodaryāḥ paryavārayan ,
duḥśalaścitrasenaśca kuṇḍabhedī viviṁśatiḥ.

68. O Great King, his uterine brothers, accompanied by their army, surrounded him (Arjuna). These were Duḥśala, Citrasena, Kuṇḍabhedin, and Viviṃśati.
दुर्मुखो दुःसहश्चैव विकर्णश्च शलस्तथा ।
विन्दानुविन्दौ सुमुखो दीर्घबाहुः सुदर्शनः ॥६९॥
69. durmukho duḥsahaścaiva vikarṇaśca śalastathā ,
vindānuvindau sumukho dīrghabāhuḥ sudarśanaḥ.

वृन्दारकः सुहस्तश्च सुषेणो दीर्घलोचनः ।
अभयो रौद्रकर्मा च सुवर्मा दुर्विमोचनः ॥७०॥
70. vṛndārakaḥ suhastaśca suṣeṇo dīrghalocanaḥ ,
abhayo raudrakarmā ca suvarmā durvimocanaḥ.

विविधै रथिनां श्रेष्ठाः सह सैन्यैः सहानुगैः ।
संयत्ताः समरे शूरा भीमसेनमुपाद्रवन् ॥७१॥
71. vividhai rathināṁ śreṣṭhāḥ saha sainyaiḥ sahānugaiḥ ,
saṁyattāḥ samare śūrā bhīmasenamupādravan.

71. The best among the various charioteers, along with their armies and followers, these brave warriors, fully prepared, attacked Bhīmasena in battle.
तान्समीक्ष्य तु कौन्तेयो भीमसेनः पराक्रमी ।
अभ्यवर्तत वेगेन सिंहः क्षुद्रमृगानिव ॥७२॥
72. tānsamīkṣya tu kaunteyo bhīmasenaḥ parākramī ,
abhyavartata vegena siṁhaḥ kṣudramṛgāniva.

72. But the powerful Bhīmasena, son of Kuntī, observing them, advanced with speed, just as a lion would towards small deer.
ते महास्त्राणि दिव्यानि तत्र वीरा अदर्शयन् ।
वारयन्तः शरैर्भीमं मेघाः सूर्यमिवोदितम् ॥७३॥
73. te mahāstrāṇi divyāni tatra vīrā adarśayan ,
vārayantaḥ śarairbhīmaṁ meghāḥ sūryamivoditam.

73. There, those heroes displayed their divine great weapons, obstructing Bhīma with arrows, just as clouds obstruct the risen sun.
स तानतीत्य वेगेन द्रोणानीकमुपाद्रवत् ।
अग्रतश्च गजानीकं शरवर्षैरवाकिरत् ॥७४॥
74. sa tānatītya vegena droṇānīkamupādravat ,
agrataśca gajānīkaṁ śaravarṣairavākirat.

74. Having swiftly bypassed them, he rushed towards Droṇa's army. And, in the vanguard, he showered the elephant army with volleys of arrows.
सोऽचिरेणैव कालेन तद्गजानीकमाशुगैः ।
दिशः सर्वाः समभ्यस्य व्यधमत्पवनात्मजः ॥७५॥
75. so'cireṇaiva kālena tadgajānīkamāśugaiḥ ,
diśaḥ sarvāḥ samabhyasya vyadhamatpavanātmajaḥ.

75. Indeed, in no time, the son of the wind (Bhīma), filling all directions with his swiftly-flying arrows, utterly destroyed that elephant army.
त्रासिताः शरभस्येव गर्जितेन वने मृगाः ।
प्राद्रवन्द्विरदाः सर्वे नदन्तो भैरवान्रवान् ॥७६॥
76. trāsitāḥ śarabhasyeva garjitena vane mṛgāḥ ,
prādravandviradāḥ sarve nadanto bhairavānravān.

76. Terrified, just like deer in a forest by the roar of a śarabha, all the elephants fled, letting out terrifying trumpets.
पुनश्चातीत्य वेगेन द्रोणानीकमुपाद्रवत् ।
तमवारयदाचार्यो वेलेवोद्वृत्तमर्णवम् ॥७७॥
77. punaścātītya vegena droṇānīkamupādravat ,
tamavārayadācāryo velevodvṛttamarṇavam.

77. And again, having swiftly overcome, he rushed towards Drona's army. The preceptor (guru) Drona checked him, just as a shore checks a surging ocean.
ललाटेऽताडयच्चैनं नाराचेन स्मयन्निव ।
ऊर्ध्वरश्मिरिवादित्यो विबभौ तत्र पाण्डवः ॥७८॥
78. lalāṭe'tāḍayaccainaṁ nārācena smayanniva ,
ūrdhvaraśmirivādityo vibabhau tatra pāṇḍavaḥ.

ūrdhva-raśmiḥ iva ādityaḥ vibabhau tatra pāṇḍavaḥ

78. And as if smiling, he struck him on the forehead with an arrow. There, the Pāṇḍava (Arjuna) shone like the sun with its upward-pointing rays.
स मन्यमानस्त्वाचार्यो ममायं फल्गुनो यथा ।
भीमः करिष्यते पूजामित्युवाच वृकोदरम् ॥७९॥
79. sa manyamānastvācāryo mamāyaṁ phalguno yathā ,
bhīmaḥ kariṣyate pūjāmityuvāca vṛkodaram.

yathā bhīmaḥ kariṣyate pūjām iti uvāca vṛkodaram

79. But that preceptor (guru) Drona, thinking, "This Bhima is like my Arjuna; he will offer me respect (pūjā)," thus spoke to Vṛkodara (Bhima).
भीमसेन न ते शक्यं प्रवेष्टुमरिवाहिनीम् ।
मामनिर्जित्य समरे शत्रुमध्ये महाबल ॥८०॥
80. bhīmasena na te śakyaṁ praveṣṭumarivāhinīm ,
māmanirjitya samare śatrumadhye mahābala.

80. "O Bhimasena, O mighty one, it is not possible for you to enter the enemy's army in the midst of the foes without first defeating me in battle."
यदि ते सोऽनुजः कृष्णः प्रविष्टोऽनुमते मम ।
अनीकं न तु शक्यं भोः प्रवेष्टुमिह वै त्वया ॥८१॥
81. yadi te so'nujaḥ kṛṣṇaḥ praviṣṭo'numate mama ,
anīkaṁ na tu śakyaṁ bhoḥ praveṣṭumiha vai tvayā.

81. O! Even if Kṛṣṇa, your close companion, has entered [the ranks] with my permission, it is certainly not possible for you to enter this army here.
अथ भीमस्तु तच्छ्रुत्वा गुरोर्वाक्यमपेतभीः ।
क्रुद्धः प्रोवाच वै द्रोणं रक्तताम्रेक्षणः श्वसन् ॥८२॥
82. atha bhīmastu tacchrutvā gurorvākyamapetabhīḥ ,
kruddhaḥ provāca vai droṇaṁ raktatāmrekṣaṇaḥ śvasan.

82. Then, upon hearing that speech from his preceptor (guru), Bhīma, fearless and enraged, indeed spoke to Droṇa, breathing heavily, his eyes red and copper-colored.
तवार्जुनो नानुमते ब्रह्मबन्धो रणाजिरम् ।
प्रविष्टः स हि दुर्धर्षः शक्रस्यापि विशेद्बलम् ॥८३॥
83. tavārjuno nānumate brahmabandho raṇājiram ,
praviṣṭaḥ sa hi durdharṣaḥ śakrasyāpi viśedbalam.
83. tava arjunaḥ na anumate brahmabandho raṇājiram
praviṣṭaḥ saḥ hi durdharṣaḥ śakrasya api viśet balam
83. brahmabandho tava arjunaḥ anumate na raṇājiram
praviṣṭaḥ hi saḥ durdharṣaḥ śakrasya balam api viśet
83. O kinsman of Brahmins! Arjuna did not enter the battlefield with your permission. Indeed, that formidable one would enter even the army of Indra.
येन वै परमां पूजां कुर्वता मानितो ह्यसि ।
नार्जुनोऽहं घृणी द्रोण भीमसेनोऽस्मि ते रिपुः ॥८४॥
84. yena vai paramāṁ pūjāṁ kurvatā mānito hyasi ,
nārjuno'haṁ ghṛṇī droṇa bhīmaseno'smi te ripuḥ.
84. yena vai paramām pūjām kurvatā mānitaḥ hi asi na
arjunaḥ aham ghṛṇī droṇa bhīmasenaḥ asmi te ripuḥ
84. droṇa yena vai paramām pūjām kurvatā hi mānitaḥ
asi aham arjunaḥ na ghṛṇī asmi bhīmasenaḥ te ripuḥ
84. Indeed, it is by him, performing supreme honor, that you have been esteemed. O Droṇa, I am not Arjuna, who is compassionate; I am Bhīmasena, your enemy.
पिता नस्त्वं गुरुर्बन्धुस्तथा पुत्रा हि ते वयम् ।
इति मन्यामहे सर्वे भवन्तं प्रणताः स्थिताः ॥८५॥
85. pitā nastvaṁ gururbandhustathā putrā hi te vayam ,
iti manyāmahe sarve bhavantaṁ praṇatāḥ sthitāḥ.
85. pitā naḥ tvam guruḥ bandhuḥ tathā putrāḥ hi te
vayam iti manyāmahe sarve bhavantam praṇatāḥ sthitāḥ
85. tvam naḥ pitā guruḥ bandhuḥ tathā vayam te putrāḥ

85. You are our father, our spiritual teacher (guru), and our kinsman. Indeed, we are your sons. All of us, standing bowed down, consider you to be so.
अद्य तद्विपरीतं ते वदतोऽस्मासु दृश्यते ।
यदि शत्रुं त्वमात्मानं मन्यसे तत्तथास्त्विह ।
एष ते सदृशं शत्रोः कर्म भीमः करोम्यहम् ॥८६॥
86. adya tadviparītaṁ te vadato'smāsu dṛśyate ,
yadi śatruṁ tvamātmānaṁ manyase tattathāstviha ,
eṣa te sadṛśaṁ śatroḥ karma bhīmaḥ karomyaham.
86. adya tat viparītam te vadataḥ asmāsu
dṛśyate yadi śatrum tvam ātmānam
manyase tat tathā astu iha eṣaḥ te
sadṛśam śatroḥ karma bhīmaḥ karomi aham
86. adya te vadataḥ asmāsu tat viparītam

manyase tat iha tathā astu eṣaḥ aham
bhīmaḥ te śatroḥ sadṛśam karma karomi
86. Today, the opposite of that (what we previously declared, i.e., filial affection) is seen concerning us, as we speak to you. If you consider your own self (ātman) an enemy, then let it be so here. I, Bhīma, will perform a deed befitting an enemy against you.
अथोद्भ्राम्य गदां भीमः कालदण्डमिवान्तकः ।
द्रोणायावसृजद्राजन्स रथादवपुप्लुवे ॥८७॥
87. athodbhrāmya gadāṁ bhīmaḥ kāladaṇḍamivāntakaḥ ,
droṇāyāvasṛjadrājansa rathādavapupluve.
87. atha udbhrāmya gadām bhīmaḥ kāladaṇḍam iva antakaḥ
droṇāya avasṛjat rājan saḥ rathāt avapupluve
87. atha bhīmaḥ antakaḥ kāladaṇḍam iva gadām udbhrāmya

87. Then, whirling his mace like the staff of Death (kāla-daṇḍa) wielded by Antaka (Yama), Bhīma hurled it at Droṇa. O King, (Droṇa) thereupon leaped down from his chariot.
साश्वसूतध्वजं यानं द्रोणस्यापोथयत्तदा ।
प्रामृद्नाच्च बहून्योधान्वायुर्वृक्षानिवौजसा ॥८८॥
88. sāśvasūtadhvajaṁ yānaṁ droṇasyāpothayattadā ,
prāmṛdnācca bahūnyodhānvāyurvṛkṣānivaujasā.
88. sāśvasūtadhvajam yānam droṇasya apothayat tadā
prāmṛdnāt ca bahūn yodhān vāyuḥ vṛkṣān iva ojasā
88. tadā (it) droṇasya sāśvasūtadhvajam yānam apothayat
ca vāyuḥ ojasā vṛkṣān iva bahūn yodhān prāmṛdnāt
88. Then, it shattered Droṇa's vehicle (yāna), along with its horses, charioteer, and banner. And it crushed many warriors, just as the wind (vāyu) with its force (ojas) crushes trees.
तं पुनः परिवव्रुस्ते तव पुत्रा रथोत्तमम् ।
अन्यं च रथमास्थाय द्रोणः प्रहरतां वरः ॥८९॥
89. taṁ punaḥ parivavruste tava putrā rathottamam ,
anyaṁ ca rathamāsthāya droṇaḥ praharatāṁ varaḥ.
89. tam punaḥ parivavruḥ te tava putrāḥ rathottamam
anyam ca ratham āsthāya droṇaḥ praharatām varaḥ
89. tava putrāḥ te punaḥ tam rathottamam parivavruḥ

89. Your sons again surrounded him, [who was on] the best of chariots. And Droṇa, the best among those who strike, having mounted another chariot, [also joined them].
ततः क्रुद्धो महाराज भीमसेनः पराक्रमी ।
अग्रतः स्यन्दनानीकं शरवर्षैरवाकिरत् ॥९०॥
90. tataḥ kruddho mahārāja bhīmasenaḥ parākramī ,
agrataḥ syandanānīkaṁ śaravarṣairavākirat.

90. Then, O great king, the enraged and mighty Bhīmasena covered the array of chariots in front with showers of arrows.
ते वध्यमानाः समरे तव पुत्रा महारथाः ।
भीमं भीमबलं युद्धेऽयोधयंस्तु जयैषिणः ॥९१॥
91. te vadhyamānāḥ samare tava putrā mahārathāḥ ,
bhīmaṁ bhīmabalaṁ yuddhe'yodhayaṁstu jayaiṣiṇaḥ.
91. te vadhyamānāḥ samare tava putrāḥ mahārathāḥ
bhīmam bhīmabalam yuddhe ayodhayanta tu jayaiṣiṇaḥ
91. samare vadhyamānāḥ te tava putrāḥ mahārathāḥ
jayaiṣiṇaḥ tu yuddhe bhīmabalam bhīmam ayodhayanta
91. Those great chariot-warrior sons of yours, though being struck down in battle, nevertheless, being desirous of victory, fought Bhīma, who possessed terrible strength, in the fight.
ततो दुःशासनः क्रुद्धो रथशक्तिं समाक्षिपत् ।
सर्वपारशवीं तीक्ष्णां जिघांसुः पाण्डुनन्दनम् ॥९२॥
92. tato duḥśāsanaḥ kruddho rathaśaktiṁ samākṣipat ,
sarvapāraśavīṁ tīkṣṇāṁ jighāṁsuḥ pāṇḍunandanam.
92. tataḥ duḥśāsanaḥ kruddhaḥ rathaśaktim samākṣipat
sarvapāraśavīm tīkṣṇām jighāṃsuḥ pāṇḍunandanam

92. Then, the enraged Duḥśāsana hurled a sharp and entirely iron spear (śakti) from his chariot, intent on killing the son of Pāṇḍu (Bhīmasena).
आपतन्तीं महाशक्तिं तव पुत्रप्रचोदिताम् ।
द्विधा चिच्छेद तां भीमस्तदद्भुतमिवाभवत् ॥९३॥
93. āpatantīṁ mahāśaktiṁ tava putrapracoditām ,
dvidhā ciccheda tāṁ bhīmastadadbhutamivābhavat.
93. āpatantīm mahāśaktim tava putrapracoditām dvidhā
ciccheda tām bhīmaḥ tat adbhutam iva abhavat
93. bhīmaḥ tava putrapracoditām āpatantīm mahāśaktim

93. Bhima cut into two that mighty weapon (śakti) that was launched by your sons and was falling upon him. That incident was truly astonishing.
अथान्यैर्निशितैर्बाणैः संक्रुद्धः कुण्डभेदिनम् ।
सुषेणं दीर्घनेत्रं च त्रिभिस्त्रीनवधीद्बली ॥९४॥
94. athānyairniśitairbāṇaiḥ saṁkruddhaḥ kuṇḍabhedinam ,
suṣeṇaṁ dīrghanetraṁ ca tribhistrīnavadhīdbalī.
94. atha anyaiḥ niśitaiḥ bāṇaiḥ saṃkruddhaḥ kuṇḍabhedinam
suṣeṇam dīrghanetram ca tribhiḥ trīn avadhīt balī
94. atha saṃkruddhaḥ balī anyaiḥ niśitaiḥ tribhiḥ bāṇaiḥ
kuṇḍabhedinam suṣeṇam ca dīrghanetram trīn avadhīt
94. Then, the enraged mighty warrior killed Kundabhedin, Sushena, and Dirghanetra, slaying these three with three other sharp arrows.
ततो वृन्दारकं वीरं कुरूणां कीर्तिवर्धनम् ।
पुत्राणां तव वीराणां युध्यतामवधीत्पुनः ॥९५॥
95. tato vṛndārakaṁ vīraṁ kurūṇāṁ kīrtivardhanam ,
putrāṇāṁ tava vīrāṇāṁ yudhyatāmavadhītpunaḥ.
95. tataḥ vṛndārakam vīram kurūṇām kīrtivardhanam
putrāṇām tava vīrāṇām yudhyatām avadhīt punaḥ
95. tataḥ punaḥ (saḥ) vīram kurūṇām tava vīrāṇām
yudhyatām putrāṇām kīrtivardhanam vṛndārakam avadhīt
95. Then again, he killed the hero Vṛndāraka, who was the enhancer of the fame of the Kurus and of your valiant fighting sons.
अभयं रौद्रकर्माणं दुर्विमोचनमेव च ।
त्रिभिस्त्रीनवधीद्भीमः पुनरेव सुतांस्तव ॥९६॥
96. abhayaṁ raudrakarmāṇaṁ durvimocanameva ca ,
tribhistrīnavadhīdbhīmaḥ punareva sutāṁstava.
96. abhayam raudrakarmāṇam durvimocanam eva ca
tribhiḥ trīn avadhīt bhīmaḥ punaḥ eva sutān tava
96. punaḥ eva ca bhīmaḥ tava sutān abhayam

96. And again, Bhima killed your sons, Abhaya, who performed fierce deeds, and Durvimocana, slaying these three with three arrows.
वध्यमाना महाराज पुत्रास्तव बलीयसा ।
भीमं प्रहरतां श्रेष्ठं समन्तात्पर्यवारयन् ॥९७॥
97. vadhyamānā mahārāja putrāstava balīyasā ,
bhīmaṁ praharatāṁ śreṣṭhaṁ samantātparyavārayan.
97. vadhyamānāḥ mahārāja putrāḥ tava balīyasā bhīmam
praharatām śreṣṭham samantāt paryavārayan
97. mahārāja tava putrāḥ balīyasā praharatām śreṣṭham

97. O great king, your sons, though being struck down by the very powerful Bhīma, who is the foremost among those who strike, surrounded him from all sides.
विन्दानुविन्दौ सहितौ सुवर्माणं च ते सुतम् ।
प्रहसन्निव कौन्तेयः शरैर्निन्ये यमक्षयम् ॥९८॥
98. vindānuvindau sahitau suvarmāṇaṁ ca te sutam ,
prahasanniva kaunteyaḥ śarairninye yamakṣayam.

98. Kuntī's son (Bhīma), as if smiling, carried Vindā, Anuvindā, and your son Suvarmā, to the abode of Yama with his arrows.
ततः सुदर्शनं वीरं पुत्रं ते भरतर्षभ ।
विव्याध समरे तूर्णं स पपात ममार च ॥९९॥
99. tataḥ sudarśanaṁ vīraṁ putraṁ te bharatarṣabha ,
vivyādha samare tūrṇaṁ sa papāta mamāra ca.
99. tataḥ sudarśanam vīram putram te bharatarṣabha
vivyādha samare tūrṇam saḥ papāta mamāra ca
99. bharatarṣabha tataḥ te vīram putram sudarśanam
samare tūrṇam vivyādha saḥ papāta ca mamāra
99. O best of the Bhāratas, then (Bhīma) swiftly pierced your heroic son Sudarśana in battle; he fell and died.
सोऽचिरेणैव कालेन तद्रथानीकमाशुगैः ।
दिशः सर्वाः समभ्यस्य व्यधमत्पाण्डुनन्दनः ॥१००॥
100. so'cireṇaiva kālena tadrathānīkamāśugaiḥ ,
diśaḥ sarvāḥ samabhyasya vyadhamatpāṇḍunandanaḥ.
100. saḥ acireṇa eva kālena tat rathānīkam āśugaiḥ
diśaḥ sarvāḥ samabhyasya vyadhamat pāṇḍunandanaḥ
100. saḥ pāṇḍunandanaḥ acireṇa eva kālena āśugaiḥ
sarvāḥ diśaḥ samabhyasya tat rathānīkam vyadhamat
100. That son of Pāṇḍu (Bhīma), in a very short time, with his swift arrows, scattered that chariot army, having pervaded all directions.
ततो वै रथघोषेण गर्जितेन मृगा इव ।
वध्यमानाश्च समरे पुत्रास्तव विशां पते ।
प्राद्रवन्सरथाः सर्वे भीमसेनभयार्दिताः ॥१०१॥
101. tato vai rathaghoṣeṇa garjitena mṛgā iva ,
vadhyamānāśca samare putrāstava viśāṁ pate ,
prādravansarathāḥ sarve bhīmasenabhayārditāḥ.
101. tataḥ vai rathaghoṣeṇa garjitena
mṛgāḥ iva | vadhyamānāḥ ca samare
putrāḥ tava viśām pate | prādravan
sarathāḥ sarve bhīmasenabhayārditāḥ

101. O lord of the people, then, tormented by fear of Bhimasena, all your sons, being struck down in battle by the roaring sound of chariots, fled with their chariots like deer.
अनुयाय तु कौन्तेयः पुत्राणां ते महद्बलम् ।
विव्याध समरे राजन्कौरवेयान्समन्ततः ॥१०२॥
102. anuyāya tu kaunteyaḥ putrāṇāṁ te mahadbalam ,
vivyādha samare rājankauraveyānsamantataḥ.
102. anuyāya tu kaunteyaḥ putrāṇām te mahat balam
| vivyādha samare rājan kauraveyān samantataḥ
102. rājan,
kaunteyaḥ tu putrāṇām te mahat balam anuyāya samare kauraveyān samantataḥ vivyādha
102. But, O King, Bhimasena (Kaunteya), having pursued your sons' great army, struck the Kauravas on all sides in battle.
वध्यमाना महाराज भीमसेनेन तावकाः ।
त्यक्त्वा भीमं रणे यान्ति चोदयन्तो हयोत्तमान् ॥१०३॥
103. vadhyamānā mahārāja bhīmasenena tāvakāḥ ,
tyaktvā bhīmaṁ raṇe yānti codayanto hayottamān.
103. vadhyamānāḥ mahārāja bhīmasenena tāvakāḥ |
tyaktvā bhīmam raṇe yānti codayantaḥ hayottamān
103. mahārāja,
bhīmasenena vadhyamānāḥ tāvakāḥ bhīmam tyaktvā hayottamān codayantaḥ raṇe yānti
103. O great king, your warriors, being struck down by Bhimasena, abandoned Bhimasena in battle and fled, urging on their excellent horses.
तांस्तु निर्जित्य समरे भीमसेनो महाबलः ।
सिंहनादरवं चक्रे बाहुशब्दं च पाण्डवः ॥१०४॥
104. tāṁstu nirjitya samare bhīmaseno mahābalaḥ ,
siṁhanādaravaṁ cakre bāhuśabdaṁ ca pāṇḍavaḥ.
104. tān tu nirjitya samare bhīmasenaḥ mahābalaḥ
| siṃhanādaravam cakre bāhuśabdam ca pāṇḍavaḥ
104. tu,
mahābalaḥ pāṇḍavaḥ bhīmasenaḥ tān samare nirjitya siṃhanādaravam ca bāhuśabdam cakre
104. But having conquered them in battle, the mighty Bhimasena, the Pandava, let out a lion's roar and also a fierce sound with his powerful arms.
तलशब्दं च सुमहत्कृत्वा भीमो महाबलः ।
व्यतीत्य रथिनश्चापि द्रोणानीकमुपाद्रवत् ॥१०५॥
105. talaśabdaṁ ca sumahatkṛtvā bhīmo mahābalaḥ ,
vyatītya rathinaścāpi droṇānīkamupādravat.
105. talaśabdam ca su-mahat kṛtvā bhīmaḥ mahābalaḥ
vyatītya rathinaḥ ca api droṇa-anīkam upādravat
105. mahābalaḥ bhīmaḥ su-mahat talaśabdam kṛtvā ca

105. The mighty Bhīma, having made a tremendously loud palm-slap sound, surged past the charioteers and charged into Droṇa's army.
