अर्जुन उवाच ।
किंनिमित्तमभूद्वैरं विश्वामित्रवसिष्ठयोः ।
वसतोराश्रमे पुण्ये शंस नः सर्वमेव तत् ॥१॥
1. arjuna uvāca ,
kiṁnimittamabhūdvairaṁ viśvāmitravasiṣṭhayoḥ ,
vasatorāśrame puṇye śaṁsa naḥ sarvameva tat.

vasatoḥ āśrame puṇye śaṃsa naḥ sarvam eva tat
1. Arjuna said: 'What was the cause of the conflict between Viśvāmitra and Vasiṣṭha, who were both residing in a sacred hermitage? Please tell us everything about that.'
गन्धर्व उवाच ।
इदं वासिष्ठमाख्यानं पुराणं परिचक्षते ।
पार्थ सर्वेषु लोकेषु यथावत्तन्निबोध मे ॥२॥
2. gandharva uvāca ,
idaṁ vāsiṣṭhamākhyānaṁ purāṇaṁ paricakṣate ,
pārtha sarveṣu lokeṣu yathāvattannibodha me.
2. gandharva uvāca idam vāsiṣṭham ākhyānam purāṇam
paricakṣate pārtha sarveṣu lokeṣu yathāvat tat nibodha me
2. The Gandharva said: "O Pārtha, this ancient narrative (purāṇa ākhyāna) of Vasiṣṭha is recounted in all the worlds (lokas). Hear it properly from me."
कन्यकुब्जे महानासीत्पार्थिवो भरतर्षभ ।
गाधीति विश्रुतो लोके सत्यधर्मपरायणः ॥३॥
3. kanyakubje mahānāsītpārthivo bharatarṣabha ,
gādhīti viśruto loke satyadharmaparāyaṇaḥ.
3. kanyakubje mahān āsīt pārthivaḥ bharatarṣabha
gādhī iti viśrutaḥ loke satyadharmaparāyaṇaḥ
3. O best of Bharatas, there was a great king in Kanyakubja, renowned in the world (loka) as Gādhī, who was devoted to truth and natural law (dharma).
तस्य धर्मात्मनः पुत्रः समृद्धबलवाहनः ।
विश्वामित्र इति ख्यातो बभूव रिपुमर्दनः ॥४॥
4. tasya dharmātmanaḥ putraḥ samṛddhabalavāhanaḥ ,
viśvāmitra iti khyāto babhūva ripumardanaḥ.

viśvāmitra iti khyātaḥ babhūva ripumardanaḥ
4. That righteous (dharma) king's son, endowed with abundant strength and conveyances, became renowned as Viśvāmitra, a vanquisher of enemies.
स चचार सहामात्यो मृगयां गहने वने ।
मृगान्विध्यन्वराहांश्च रम्येषु मरुधन्वसु ॥५॥
5. sa cacāra sahāmātyo mṛgayāṁ gahane vane ,
mṛgānvidhyanvarāhāṁśca ramyeṣu marudhanvasu.
5. sa cacāra saha amātyaḥ mṛgayām gahane vane
mṛgān vidhyan varāhān ca ramyeṣu marudhanvasu
5. Accompanied by his ministers, he roamed, hunting in the dense forest, piercing deer and boars in delightful desert and wilderness areas.
व्यायामकर्शितः सोऽथ मृगलिप्सुः पिपासितः ।
आजगाम नरश्रेष्ठ वसिष्ठस्याश्रमं प्रति ॥६॥
6. vyāyāmakarśitaḥ so'tha mṛgalipsuḥ pipāsitaḥ ,
ājagāma naraśreṣṭha vasiṣṭhasyāśramaṁ prati.
6. vyāyāmakarśitaḥ sa atha mṛgalipsuḥ pipāsitaḥ
ājagāma naraseṣṭha vasiṣṭhasya āśramam prati
6. Then, exhausted by exertion, desiring game, and thirsty, he, O best of men, came towards Vasiṣṭha's hermitage (āśrama).
तमागतमभिप्रेक्ष्य वसिष्ठः श्रेष्ठभागृषिः ।
विश्वामित्रं नरश्रेष्ठं प्रतिजग्राह पूजया ॥७॥
7. tamāgatamabhiprekṣya vasiṣṭhaḥ śreṣṭhabhāgṛṣiḥ ,
viśvāmitraṁ naraśreṣṭhaṁ pratijagrāha pūjayā.
7. tam āgatam abhiprekṣya vasiṣṭhaḥ śreṣṭhabhāk ṛṣiḥ
viśvāmitram naraśreṣṭham pratijagrāha pūjayā
7. Seeing Vishvamitra, who was the best of men and had arrived, Vasishtha, the most excellent sage (ṛṣi), received him with honor.
पाद्यार्घ्याचमनीयेन स्वागतेन च भारत ।
तथैव प्रतिजग्राह वन्येन हविषा तथा ॥८॥
8. pādyārghyācamanīyena svāgatena ca bhārata ,
tathaiva pratijagrāha vanyena haviṣā tathā.
8. pādya-arghya-ācamanīyena svāgatena ca bhārata
tathā eva pratijagrāha vanyena haviṣā tathā
8. And in the same manner, O Arjuna (Bhārata), he welcomed him with water for washing the feet, offerings, water for sipping, a proper greeting, and also with forest offerings.
तस्याथ कामधुग्धेनुर्वसिष्ठस्य महात्मनः ।
उक्ता कामान्प्रयच्छेति सा कामान्दुदुहे ततः ॥९॥
9. tasyātha kāmadhugdhenurvasiṣṭhasya mahātmanaḥ ,
uktā kāmānprayaccheti sā kāmānduduhe tataḥ.
9. tasya atha kāmadhuk dhenuḥ vasiṣṭhasya mahātmanaḥ
uktā kāmān prayaccha iti sā kāmān duduhe tataḥ
9. Then, the wish-fulfilling cow (dhenu) of the great-souled Vasishtha, having been told, "Grant desires (kāma)," subsequently yielded all wishes (kāma).
ग्राम्यारण्या ओषधीश्च दुदुहे पय एव च ।
षड्रसं चामृतरसं रसायनमनुत्तमम् ॥१०॥
10. grāmyāraṇyā oṣadhīśca duduhe paya eva ca ,
ṣaḍrasaṁ cāmṛtarasaṁ rasāyanamanuttamam.
10. grāmya-āraṇyaḥ oṣadhīḥ ca duduhe payaḥ eva ca
ṣaḍrasam ca amṛtarasam rasāyanam anuttamam
10. She yielded both village and forest herbs, as well as milk. She also yielded the six-flavored, nectar-like, and incomparable elixir (rasāyana).
भोजनीयानि पेयानि भक्ष्याणि विविधानि च ।
लेह्यान्यमृतकल्पानि चोष्याणि च तथार्जुन ॥११॥
11. bhojanīyāni peyāni bhakṣyāṇi vividhāni ca ,
lehyānyamṛtakalpāni coṣyāṇi ca tathārjuna.
11. bhojanīyāni peyāni bhakṣyāṇi vividhāni ca
lehyāni amṛtakalpāni ca coṣyāṇi ca tathā arjuna
11. And, O Arjuna, she yielded various foods to be eaten, drinks to be drunk, solid foods, lickables like nectar, and suckables.
तैः कामैः सर्वसंपूर्णैः पूजितः स महीपतिः ।
सामात्यः सबलश्चैव तुतोष स भृशं नृपः ॥१२॥
12. taiḥ kāmaiḥ sarvasaṁpūrṇaiḥ pūjitaḥ sa mahīpatiḥ ,
sāmātyaḥ sabalaścaiva tutoṣa sa bhṛśaṁ nṛpaḥ.
12. taiḥ kāmaiḥ sarvasaṃpūrṇaiḥ pūjitaḥ saḥ mahīpatiḥ
sāmātyaḥ sabalaḥ ca eva tutoṣa saḥ bhṛśam nṛpaḥ
12. That king, along with his ministers and army, was greatly pleased, having been honored with all desires completely fulfilled.
षडायतां सुपार्श्वोरुं त्रिपृथुं पञ्च संवृताम् ।
मण्डूकनेत्रां स्वाकारां पीनोधसमनिन्दिताम् ॥१३॥
13. ṣaḍāyatāṁ supārśvoruṁ tripṛthuṁ pañca saṁvṛtām ,
maṇḍūkanetrāṁ svākārāṁ pīnodhasamaninditām.
13. ṣaḍāyatām supārśvorum tripṛthum pañca saṃvṛtām
maṇḍūkanetrām svākārām pīnodhasamaninditām
13. (Describing Nandinī) extended in six parts, with beautiful flanks and thighs, broad in three places, compact in five, with prominent eyes, well-formed, with full udders, and faultless.
सुवालधिं शङ्कुकर्णां चारुशृङ्गां मनोरमाम् ।
पुष्टायतशिरोग्रीवां विस्मितः सोऽभिवीक्ष्य ताम् ॥१४॥
14. suvāladhiṁ śaṅkukarṇāṁ cāruśṛṅgāṁ manoramām ,
puṣṭāyataśirogrīvāṁ vismitaḥ so'bhivīkṣya tām.
14. suvāladhim śaṅkukarṇām cāruśṛṅgām manoramām
puṣṭāyataśirogrīvām vismitaḥ saḥ abhivīkṣya tām
14. (Describing Nandinī) having a beautiful tail, cone-shaped ears, charming horns, and a delightful, plump, long head and neck; having gazed at her, he (Viśvāmitra) was astonished.
अभिनन्दति तां नन्दीं वसिष्ठस्य पयस्विनीम् ।
अब्रवीच्च भृशं तुष्टो विश्वामित्रो मुनिं तदा ॥१५॥
15. abhinandati tāṁ nandīṁ vasiṣṭhasya payasvinīm ,
abravīcca bhṛśaṁ tuṣṭo viśvāmitro muniṁ tadā.
15. abhinandati tām nandīm vasiṣṭhasya payasvinīm
abravīt ca bhṛśam tuṣṭaḥ viśvāmitraḥ munim tadā
15. Viśvāmitra praised Nandinī, the abundant milk-giving cow belonging to Vasiṣṭha. Then, greatly pleased, he (Viśvāmitra) spoke to the sage (muni).
अर्बुदेन गवां ब्रह्मन्मम राज्येन वा पुनः ।
नन्दिनीं संप्रयच्छस्व भुङ्क्ष्व राज्यं महामुने ॥१६॥
16. arbudena gavāṁ brahmanmama rājyena vā punaḥ ,
nandinīṁ saṁprayacchasva bhuṅkṣva rājyaṁ mahāmune.
16. arbūdena gavām brahman mama rājyena vā punaḥ
nandinīm saṃprayacchasva bhuṅkṣva rājyam mahāmune
16. O Brahmin (brahman), give Nandinī in exchange for ten million cows, or for my kingdom. Enjoy the kingdom, O great sage (mahāmuni).
वसिष्ठ उवाच ।
देवतातिथिपित्रर्थमाज्यार्थं च पयस्विनी ।
अदेया नन्दिनीयं मे राज्येनापि तवानघ ॥१७॥
17. vasiṣṭha uvāca ,
devatātithipitrarthamājyārthaṁ ca payasvinī ,
adeyā nandinīyaṁ me rājyenāpi tavānagha.
17. vasiṣṭhaḥ uvāca devatāatithipitṛartham ājyārtham ca
payasvinī adeyā nandinī iyam me rājyena api tava anagha
17. Vasiṣṭha said: "This milch cow, Nandini, is for the sake of the gods, guests, and ancestors, and for clarified butter (ājya). She is not to be given away by me, not even for your kingdom, O sinless one."
विश्वामित्र उवाच ।
क्षत्रियोऽहं भवान्विप्रस्तपःस्वाध्यायसाधनः ।
ब्राह्मणेषु कुतो वीर्यं प्रशान्तेषु धृतात्मसु ॥१८॥
18. viśvāmitra uvāca ,
kṣatriyo'haṁ bhavānviprastapaḥsvādhyāyasādhanaḥ ,
brāhmaṇeṣu kuto vīryaṁ praśānteṣu dhṛtātmasu.
18. viśvāmitraḥ uvāca kṣatriyaḥ aham bhavān vipraḥ
tapaḥsvādhyāyasādhanaḥ brāhmaṇeṣu kutaḥ vīryam praśānteṣu dhṛtātmasu
18. Viśvāmitra said: "I am a warrior (kṣatriya), and you are a Brahmin whose means are austerity (tapas) and self-study. How can there be valor among Brahmins who are peaceful and self-controlled (dhṛtātman)?"
अर्बुदेन गवां यस्त्वं न ददासि ममेप्सिताम् ।
स्वधर्मं न प्रहास्यामि नयिष्ये ते बलेन गाम् ॥१९॥
19. arbudena gavāṁ yastvaṁ na dadāsi mamepsitām ,
svadharmaṁ na prahāsyāmi nayiṣye te balena gām.
19. arbudeṇa gavām yaḥ tvam na dadāsi mama īpsitām
svadharmam na prahāsyāmi nayiṣye te balena gām
19. Since you do not give me my desired cow for ten thousand cows, I will not abandon my own intrinsic nature (svadharma); I will take your cow by force.
वसिष्ठ उवाच ।
बलस्थश्चासि राजा च बाहुवीर्यश्च क्षत्रियः ।
यथेच्छसि तथा क्षिप्रं कुरु त्वं मा विचारय ॥२०॥
20. vasiṣṭha uvāca ,
balasthaścāsi rājā ca bāhuvīryaśca kṣatriyaḥ ,
yathecchasi tathā kṣipraṁ kuru tvaṁ mā vicāraya.
20. vasiṣṭhaḥ uvāca balasthaḥ ca asi rājā ca bāhuvīryaḥ ca
kṣatriyaḥ yathā icchasi tathā kṣipram kuru tvam mā vicāraya
20. Vasiṣṭha said: "You are indeed powerful, and a king, and a warrior (kṣatriya) strong in your arms. Do quickly as you wish; do not hesitate."
गन्धर्व उवाच ।
एवमुक्तस्तदा पार्थ विश्वामित्रो बलादिव ।
हंसचन्द्रप्रतीकाशां नन्दिनीं तां जहार गाम् ॥२१॥
21. gandharva uvāca ,
evamuktastadā pārtha viśvāmitro balādiva ,
haṁsacandrapratīkāśāṁ nandinīṁ tāṁ jahāra gām.
21. gandharvaḥ uvāca evam uktaḥ tadā pārtha viśvāmitraḥ
balāt iva haṃsacandrapratīkāśām nandinīm tām jahāra gām
21. Gandharva said: "O Pārtha, when Viśvāmitra was thus addressed, he then forcefully seized that cow Nandini, who resembled a swan (haṃsa) and the moon (candra)."
कशादण्डप्रतिहता काल्यमाना ततस्ततः ।
हम्भायमाना कल्याणी वसिष्ठस्याथ नन्दिनी ॥२२॥
22. kaśādaṇḍapratihatā kālyamānā tatastataḥ ,
hambhāyamānā kalyāṇī vasiṣṭhasyātha nandinī.
22. kaśādaṇḍapratihatā kālyamānā tatastataḥ
hambhāyamānā kalyāṇī vasiṣṭhasya atha nandinī
22. Nandini, Vasiṣṭha's auspicious cow, was being driven here and there, struck by whips and sticks, and bellowing.
आगम्याभिमुखी पार्थ तस्थौ भगवदुन्मुखी ।
भृशं च ताड्यमानापि न जगामाश्रमात्ततः ॥२३॥
23. āgamyābhimukhī pārtha tasthau bhagavadunmukhī ,
bhṛśaṁ ca tāḍyamānāpi na jagāmāśramāttataḥ.
23. āgamya abhimukhī pārtha tasthau bhagavat unmukhī
bhṛśam ca tāḍyamānā api na jagāma āśramāt tataḥ
23. O Pārtha, having come and turned towards him, she stood facing the revered sage (Vasiṣṭha). Even though she was greatly struck, she did not leave the hermitage (āśrama) from that spot.
वसिष्ठ उवाच ।
शृणोमि ते रवं भद्रे विनदन्त्याः पुनः पुनः ।
बलाद्ध्रियसि मे नन्दि क्षमावान्ब्राह्मणो ह्यहम् ॥२४॥
24. vasiṣṭha uvāca ,
śṛṇomi te ravaṁ bhadre vinadantyāḥ punaḥ punaḥ ,
balāddhriyasi me nandi kṣamāvānbrāhmaṇo hyaham.
24. vasiṣṭhaḥ uvāca śṛṇomi te ravam bhadre vinadantyāḥ punaḥ
punaḥ balāt hriyasi me nandi kṣamāvān brāhmaṇaḥ hi aham
24. Vasiṣṭha said: "O blessed one, I hear your bellowing (lit. 'your sound of you bellowing') again and again. O Nandini, you are being taken away by force from me. For I am a patient brahmin."
गन्धर्व उवाच ।
सा तु तेषां बलान्नन्दी बलानां भरतर्षभ ।
विश्वामित्रभयोद्विग्ना वसिष्ठं समुपागमत् ॥२५॥
25. gandharva uvāca ,
sā tu teṣāṁ balānnandī balānāṁ bharatarṣabha ,
viśvāmitrabhayodvignā vasiṣṭhaṁ samupāgamat.
25. gandharvaḥ uvāca sā tu teṣām balāt nandinī balānām
bharatarṣabha viśvāmitrabhayodvignā vasiṣṭham samupāgamat
25. The Gandharva said: "But she, Nandini, O best of Bhāratas, agitated by fear of Viśvāmitra, escaped from the grasp of those armies and approached Vasiṣṭha."
गौरुवाच ।
पाषाणदण्डाभिहतां क्रन्दन्तीं मामनाथवत् ।
विश्वामित्रबलैर्घोरैर्भगवन्किमुपेक्षसे ॥२६॥
26. gauruvāca ,
pāṣāṇadaṇḍābhihatāṁ krandantīṁ māmanāthavat ,
viśvāmitrabalairghorairbhagavankimupekṣase.
26. gauḥ uvāca pāṣāṇadaṇḍābhihatām krandantīm mām anāthavat
viśvāmitrabalaiḥ ghoraiḥ bhagavan kim upekṣase
26. The cow said: "O revered one, why do you neglect me, who am crying and helpless like an orphan, struck by terrible stones and sticks from Viśvāmitra's forces?"
गन्धर्व उवाच ।
एवं तस्यां तदा पर्थ धर्षितायां महामुनिः ।
न चुक्षुभे न धैर्याच्च विचचाल धृतव्रतः ॥२७॥
27. gandharva uvāca ,
evaṁ tasyāṁ tadā partha dharṣitāyāṁ mahāmuniḥ ,
na cukṣubhe na dhairyācca vicacāla dhṛtavrataḥ.
27. gandharvaḥ uvāca evam tasyām tadā pārtha dharṣitāyām
mahāmuniḥ na cukṣubhe na dhairyāt ca vicacāla dhṛtavrataḥ
27. The Gandharva said: "Thus, O Pārtha, at that time, when she was being molested, the great sage, firm in his vow, neither became agitated nor wavered from his steadiness."
वसिष्ठ उवाच ।
क्षत्रियाणां बलं तेजो ब्राह्मणानां क्षमा बलम् ।
क्षमा मां भजते तस्माद्गम्यतां यदि रोचते ॥२८॥
28. vasiṣṭha uvāca ,
kṣatriyāṇāṁ balaṁ tejo brāhmaṇānāṁ kṣamā balam ,
kṣamā māṁ bhajate tasmādgamyatāṁ yadi rocate.
28. vasiṣṭhaḥ uvāca kṣatriyāṇām balam tejaḥ brāhmaṇānām
kṣamā balam kṣamā mām bhajate tasmāt gamyatām yadi rocate
28. Vasiṣṭha said: "The strength of Kṣatriyas is valor, but the strength of Brāhmaṇas is forgiveness. Forgiveness (kṣamā) serves me; therefore, you may leave if you wish."
गौरुवाच ।
किं नु त्यक्तास्मि भगवन्यदेवं मां प्रभाषसे ।
अत्यक्ताहं त्वया ब्रह्मन्न शक्या नयितुं बलात् ॥२९॥
29. gauruvāca ,
kiṁ nu tyaktāsmi bhagavanyadevaṁ māṁ prabhāṣase ,
atyaktāhaṁ tvayā brahmanna śakyā nayituṁ balāt.
29. gauḥ uvāca kim nu tyaktā asmi bhagavan yat evam mām
prabhāṣase atyaktā aham tvayā brahman na śakyā nayitum balāt
29. The cow said: "Have I indeed been abandoned, O revered one (bhagavan), that you speak to me like this? I am not abandoned by you, O Brāhmaṇa (brahman); I cannot be led away by force."
वसिष्ठ उवाच ।
न त्वां त्यजामि कल्याणि स्थीयतां यदि शक्यते ।
दृढेन दाम्ना बद्ध्वैष वत्सस्ते ह्रियते बलात् ॥३०॥
30. vasiṣṭha uvāca ,
na tvāṁ tyajāmi kalyāṇi sthīyatāṁ yadi śakyate ,
dṛḍhena dāmnā baddhvaiṣa vatsaste hriyate balāt.
30. vasiṣṭhaḥ uvāca na tvām tyajāmi kalyāṇi sthīyatām yadi
śakyate dṛḍhena dāmnā baddhvā eṣaḥ vatsaḥ te hriyate balāt
30. Vasiṣṭha said: "O auspicious one, I am not abandoning you. Remain here if you are able. However, this calf of yours is being led away by force, bound with a strong rope."
गन्धर्व उवाच ।
स्थीयतामिति तच्छ्रुत्वा वसिष्ठस्य पयस्विनी ।
ऊर्ध्वाञ्चितशिरोग्रीवा प्रबभौ घोरदर्शना ॥३१॥
31. gandharva uvāca ,
sthīyatāmiti tacchrutvā vasiṣṭhasya payasvinī ,
ūrdhvāñcitaśirogrīvā prababhau ghoradarśanā.
31. gandharvaḥ uvāca sthīyatām iti tat śrutvā vasiṣṭhasya
payasvinī ūrdhvāñcitaśirogrīvā prababau ghoradarśanā
31. The Gandharva said: "Having heard Vasiṣṭha's command, 'Let it remain,' the milch-cow, with her head and neck raised high, appeared terribly fierce."
क्रोधरक्तेक्षणा सा गौर्हम्भारवघनस्वना ।
विश्वामित्रस्य तत्सैन्यं व्यद्रावयत सर्वशः ॥३२॥
32. krodharaktekṣaṇā sā gaurhambhāravaghanasvanā ,
viśvāmitrasya tatsainyaṁ vyadrāvayata sarvaśaḥ.
32. krodharaktekṣaṇā sā gauḥ hambhāravaghanasvanā
viśvāmitrasya tat sainyaṃ vyadrāvayat sarvaśaḥ
32. That cow, whose eyes were reddened with anger and whose deep sound was a bellowing roar, completely scattered Viśvāmitra's army in all directions.
कशाग्रदण्डाभिहता काल्यमाना ततस्ततः ।
क्रोधदीप्तेक्षणा क्रोधं भूय एव समादधे ॥३३॥
33. kaśāgradaṇḍābhihatā kālyamānā tatastataḥ ,
krodhadīptekṣaṇā krodhaṁ bhūya eva samādadhe.
33. kaśāgradanḍābhihatā kālyamānā tataḥ tataḥ
krodhadīptekṣaṇā krodhaṃ bhūya eva samādadhe
33. Being struck by the tip of a whip and driven from place to place, she, whose eyes were blazing with anger, indeed assumed even more anger.
आदित्य इव मध्याह्ने क्रोधदीप्तवपुर्बभौ ।
अङ्गारवर्षं मुञ्चन्ती मुहुर्वालधितो महत् ॥३४॥
34. āditya iva madhyāhne krodhadīptavapurbabhau ,
aṅgāravarṣaṁ muñcantī muhurvāladhito mahat.
34. ādityaḥ iva madhyāhne krodhadīptavapuḥ babhau
aṅgāravarṣaṃ muñcantī muhuḥ vāladhitaḥ mahat
34. Her body blazing with anger, she shone like the sun at midday, repeatedly emitting a great shower of coals from her tail.
असृजत्पह्लवान्पुच्छाच्छकृतः शबराञ्शकान् ।
मूत्रतश्चासृजच्चापि यवनान्क्रोधमूर्च्छिता ॥३५॥
35. asṛjatpahlavānpucchācchakṛtaḥ śabarāñśakān ,
mūtrataścāsṛjaccāpi yavanānkrodhamūrcchitā.
35. asṛjat pahlavān pucchāt śakṛtaḥ śabarān śakān
mūtrataḥ ca asṛjat ca api yavanān krodhamūrcchitā
35. Overwhelmed by anger, she created the Pahlavas from her tail, the Śabaras and Śakas from her dung, and also the Yavanas from her urine.
पुण्ड्रान्किरातान्द्रमिडान्सिंहलान्बर्बरांस्तथा ।
तथैव दरदान्म्लेच्छान्फेनतः सा ससर्ज ह ॥३६॥
36. puṇḍrānkirātāndramiḍānsiṁhalānbarbarāṁstathā ,
tathaiva daradānmlecchānphenataḥ sā sasarja ha.
36. puṇḍrān kirātān dramiḍān siṃhalān barbarān tathā
tathaiva daradān mlecchān phenataḥ sā sasarja ha
36. And similarly, she created the Puṇḍras, Kirātas, Dramiḍas, Siṃhalas, and Barbaras; and likewise, she indeed generated the Daradas and Mlecchas from her froth.
तैर्विसृष्टैर्महत्सैन्यं नानाम्लेच्छगणैस्तदा ।
नानावरणसंछन्नैर्नानायुधधरैस्तथा ।
अवाकीर्यत संरब्धैर्विश्वामित्रस्य पश्यतः ॥३७॥
37. tairvisṛṣṭairmahatsainyaṁ nānāmlecchagaṇaistadā ,
nānāvaraṇasaṁchannairnānāyudhadharaistathā ,
avākīryata saṁrabdhairviśvāmitrasya paśyataḥ.
37. taiḥ visṛṣṭaiḥ mahat sainyam
nānāmlecchagaṇaiḥ tadā nānāvaraṇasaṃchannaiḥ
nānāyudhadharaiḥ tathā avākīryata
saṃrabdhaiḥ viśvāmitrasya paśyataḥ
37. Then, as Viśvāmitra watched, a great army, consisting of various groups of barbarians who were released by Vasiṣṭha's forces, covered in diverse armors and carrying various weapons, was completely overwhelmed by the enraged forces.
एकैकश्च तदा योधः पञ्चभिः सप्तभिर्वृतः ।
अस्त्रवर्षेण महता काल्यमानं बलं ततः ।
प्रभग्नं सर्वतस्त्रस्तं विश्वामित्रस्य पश्यतः ॥३८॥
38. ekaikaśca tadā yodhaḥ pañcabhiḥ saptabhirvṛtaḥ ,
astravarṣeṇa mahatā kālyamānaṁ balaṁ tataḥ ,
prabhagnaṁ sarvatastrastaṁ viśvāmitrasya paśyataḥ.
38. ekaikaḥ ca tadā yodhaḥ pañcabhiḥ
saptabhiḥ vṛtaḥ astravarṣeṇa mahatā
kālyamānam balam tataḥ prabhagnam
sarvatas trastam viśvāmitrasya paśyataḥ
38. Then, as Viśvāmitra watched, each warrior was surrounded by five or seven (foes). Consequently, the army, being driven away by a tremendous shower of weapons, was shattered and terrified from all directions.
न च प्राणैर्वियुज्यन्त केचित्ते सैनिकास्तदा ।
विश्वामित्रस्य संक्रुद्धैर्वासिष्ठैर्भरतर्षभ ॥३९॥
39. na ca prāṇairviyujyanta kecitte sainikāstadā ,
viśvāmitrasya saṁkruddhairvāsiṣṭhairbharatarṣabha.
39. na ca prāṇaiḥ viyuṣyanta kecit te sainikāḥ tadā
viśvāmitrasya saṃkruddhaiḥ vāsiṣṭhaiḥ bharatarṣabha
39. O best of Bharatas, some of those soldiers of Viśvāmitra were not deprived of their lives (prāṇa) by the utterly enraged forces of Vasiṣṭha.
विश्वामित्रस्य सैन्यं तु काल्यमानं त्रियोजनम् ।
क्रोशमानं भयोद्विग्नं त्रातारं नाध्यगच्छत ॥४०॥
40. viśvāmitrasya sainyaṁ tu kālyamānaṁ triyojanam ,
krośamānaṁ bhayodvignaṁ trātāraṁ nādhyagacchata.
40. viśvāmitrasya sainyam tu kālyamānam triyojanam
krośamānam bhayodvignam trātāram na adhyagacchata
40. Viśvāmitra's army, being driven away for a distance of three yojanas, was crying out and agitated with fear, but it could not find a protector.
दृष्ट्वा तन्महदाश्चर्यं ब्रह्मतेजोभवं तदा ।
विश्वामित्रः क्षत्रभावान्निर्विण्णो वाक्यमब्रवीत् ॥४१॥
41. dṛṣṭvā tanmahadāścaryaṁ brahmatejobhavaṁ tadā ,
viśvāmitraḥ kṣatrabhāvānnirviṇṇo vākyamabravīt.
41. dṛṣṭvā tat mahat āścaryam brahmatejobhavam tadā
viśvāmitraḥ kṣatrabhāvāt nirviṇṇaḥ vākyam abravīt
41. Then, having witnessed that great marvel, which was born from the spiritual power (brahmatejas) of a Brahmin, Viśvāmitra, disheartened by his warrior (kṣatra) status, spoke these words.
धिग्बलं क्षत्रियबलं ब्रह्मतेजोबलं बलम् ।
बलाबलं विनिश्चित्य तप एव परं बलम् ॥४२॥
42. dhigbalaṁ kṣatriyabalaṁ brahmatejobalaṁ balam ,
balābalaṁ viniścitya tapa eva paraṁ balam.
42. dhik balam kṣatriyabalam brahmatejobalam balam
| balābalam viniścitya tapaḥ eva param balam
42. Cursed be the strength of a warrior (kṣatriya)! The strength born of spiritual radiance (brahmateja) is true power. Having clearly discerned the relative strengths, it is indeed asceticism (tapas) that is the supreme power.
स राज्यं स्फीतमुत्सृज्य तां च दीप्तां नृपश्रियम् ।
भोगांश्च पृष्ठतः कृत्वा तपस्येव मनो दधे ॥४३॥
43. sa rājyaṁ sphītamutsṛjya tāṁ ca dīptāṁ nṛpaśriyam ,
bhogāṁśca pṛṣṭhataḥ kṛtvā tapasyeva mano dadhe.
43. saḥ rājyam sphītam utsṛjya tām ca dīptām nṛpaśriyam
| bhogān ca pṛṣṭhataḥ kṛtvā tapasi eva manaḥ dadhe
43. He, having renounced the vast kingdom and that glorious royal splendor, and having set aside all enjoyments, fixed his mind solely on asceticism (tapas).
स गत्वा तपसा सिद्धिं लोकान्विष्टभ्य तेजसा ।
तताप सर्वान्दीप्तौजा ब्राह्मणत्वमवाप च ।
अपिबच्च सुतं सोममिन्द्रेण सह कौशिकः ॥४४॥
44. sa gatvā tapasā siddhiṁ lokānviṣṭabhya tejasā ,
tatāpa sarvāndīptaujā brāhmaṇatvamavāpa ca ,
apibacca sutaṁ somamindreṇa saha kauśikaḥ.
44. saḥ gatvā tapasā siddhim lokān
viṣṭabhya tejasā | tatāpa sarvān dīptaujaḥ
brāhmaṇatvam avāpa ca | apibat
ca sutam somam indreṇa saha kauśikaḥ
44. He, having achieved spiritual perfection (siddhi) through his asceticism (tapas) and pervaded the worlds with his radiance, shone with brilliant energy, thus attaining the status of a brahmin. And Kauśika (Viśvāmitra) also drank the Soma (soma) with Indra.
