Sañjaya said: "O King, seeing Satyaki, maddened by battle, rapidly approaching, Bhūriśravas, filled with rage, suddenly rushed towards him."

The great-armed Kuru warrior (Bhūriśravas) said to him, the foremost among the Śinis (Satyaki): "Fortunately, today you have come within my field of vision!"

Today I shall achieve my long-cherished desire in this battle. Indeed, you will not escape from me alive if you do not abandon the fight.

Today, O Daśārha (Krishna), after killing you in battle - you who always pride yourself on your valor - I shall gladden King Suyodhana (Duryodhana).

Today, King Yudhiṣṭhira, the son of Dharma (dharma), upon hearing that you have been killed by me, will immediately become ashamed, considering that it was you who instigated his involvement in this situation.

Indeed, today marks my long-desired encounter with you, just as there was for Śakra (Indra) with Bali in the ancient battle between the gods and asuras.

10.
Today, struck down by me in battle, you will go to Saṃyamanī (the city of Yama), just as Rāvaṇi (Indrajit) was certainly killed by Rāma's younger brother, Lakṣmaṇa, in battle.

Today, O Madhava, with you killed, Krishna, Partha (Arjuna), and the King of righteousness (dharmarāja) will become disheartened and will undoubtedly abandon the battle.

Today, O Madhava, having repaid you with sharp arrows, I will bring joy to the wives of those whom you killed in battle.

13.
Having come within the range of my sight, O Madhava, you will not escape, just as a small deer, having entered the domain of a lion, cannot escape.

But Yuyudhana (Satyaki), O King, replied to him as if laughing: 'O son of the Kuru dynasty (Kauraveya), there is no fear for me in battle.'

May he who renders me weaponless strike me down in battle. Indeed, may he who strikes me in combat be struck (in return) for eternal (śāśvatī) years.

16.
What is the point of much false speech? Rather, act with (your) actions (karma)! For indeed, your roar (garjita) is fruitless, just like that of an autumn cloud.

17.
Upon hearing this roar (garjita), O hero, laughter indeed wells up within me. O Kaurava, may the battle, long-desired in the world, commence today!

19.
Then, those two most excellent among men, exceedingly angry and intent on killing each other, attacked one another in battle, verbally assailing each other with sharp words.

Those two tigers among men, joined in battle, powerful and rivalrous, were like two greatly enraged elephants, fiercely rutting for the sake of a female.

21.
Bhūriśravas and Sātyaki, those two conquerors of foes, showered formidable volleys of arrows upon each other, just like two clouds.

But Saumadatti, intent on killing Śaineya, O best of Bharatas, first completely covered him with swift-flying arrows, and then pierced him with sharpened arrows.

After piercing Sātyaki with ten arrows, Saumadatti then released other sharp arrows, eager to slay the foremost among the Shinis.

O lord of the people, O lord, Sātyaki, by means of his magical weapon skills, intercepted those sharp arrows of his (Saumadatti's) in mid-air before they could reach (him).

"This man (Sātyaki), O slayer of excellent foes (Arjuna), should not fall under the control of one who practices ritual observances (yajñaśīlasya) (Bhūriśravas). Therefore, O tiger among men (puruṣavyāghra), O mighty one, let it be done quickly for your sake."

Then Dhanaṃjaya (Arjuna), with a resolute mind, spoke to Vāsudeva (Kṛṣṇa): "Behold the bull among the Kurus (Bhūriśravas) fighting with the foremost of the Vṛṣṇis (Sātyaki), just as a maddened great elephant might play (fight) with the lord of a herd of lions in a forest."

O best of the Bhāratas, a great cry of lamentation arose among the armies when the mighty-armed (Bhūriśravas) seized Sātyaki and struck him down on the ground.

O best of the Kurus, that Bhūriśravas, the giver of many gifts, shone splendidly in battle, dragging the best of the Sātvatas (Sātyaki) just like a lion drags an elephant.

Then, in battle, Bhūriśravas, having drawn his sword from its sheath, seized him by the hair and struck him on the chest with his foot.

O king, having seen the Sātvata (Sātyaki) being dragged around in that manner in battle, Vāsudeva (Kṛṣṇa) then spoke to Arjuna again.

Having thus been spoken to by Vāsudeva (Kṛṣṇa), the mighty-armed Pāṇḍava (Arjuna) mentally honored Bhūriśravas in that battle.

He harasses Satyaki, the foremost among the Vrishni heroes, just as a lion in the forest drags a great elephant, because indeed, he would not kill him.

O King, having thus mentally honored the Kuru (Jayadratha), the mighty-armed Arjuna then spoke in reply to Vāsudeva (Kṛṣṇa).

61.
O Mādhava, because my gaze is fixed on Saindhava (Jayadratha), I do not see him. However, I am performing this extremely difficult task (karma) for the sake of the Yādava (Kṛṣṇa).

Having spoken thus, the Pāṇḍava (Arjuna), following the command of Vāsudeva (Kṛṣṇa), cut off the arm, along with its sword, of the one engaged in a ritual (yajñaśīlasya) (Jayadratha) with an arrow.
