युधिष्ठिर उवाच ।
किमुत्तरं तदा तौ स्म चक्रतुस्तेन भाषिते ।
ब्राह्मणो वाथ वा राजा तन्मे ब्रूहि पितामह ॥१॥
1. yudhiṣṭhira uvāca ,
kimuttaraṁ tadā tau sma cakratustena bhāṣite ,
brāhmaṇo vātha vā rājā tanme brūhi pitāmaha.

tadā tau kim uttaram cakratuḥ sma? brāhmaṇaḥ vā atha vā rājā? tat me brūhi.
1. Yudhishthira said: "What reply did those two (individuals) then give when he had spoken? Was it the Brahmin or the king who responded? Please tell me that, O grandfather."
अथ वा तौ गतौ तत्र यदेतत्कीर्तितं त्वया ।
संवादो वा तयोः कोऽभूत्किं वा तौ तत्र चक्रतुः ॥२॥
2. atha vā tau gatau tatra yadetatkīrtitaṁ tvayā ,
saṁvādo vā tayoḥ ko'bhūtkiṁ vā tau tatra cakratuḥ.
2. atha vā tau gatau tatra yat etat kīrtitam tvayā
saṃvādaḥ vā tayoḥ kaḥ abhūt kim vā tau tatra cakratuḥ
2. atha vā tvayā kīrtitam yat etat tau tatra gatau? vā
tayoḥ kaḥ saṃvādaḥ abhūt? vā kim tau tatra cakratuḥ?
2. Or, did those two indeed go there, as recounted by you? What conversation took place between them, or what did they do there?
भीष्म उवाच ।
तथेत्येवं प्रतिश्रुत्य धर्मं संपूज्य चाभिभो ।
यमं कालं च मृत्युं च स्वर्गं संपूज्य चार्हतः ॥३॥
3. bhīṣma uvāca ,
tathetyevaṁ pratiśrutya dharmaṁ saṁpūjya cābhibho ,
yamaṁ kālaṁ ca mṛtyuṁ ca svargaṁ saṁpūjya cārhataḥ.
3. bhīṣma uvāca tathā iti evam pratiśrutya dharmam sampūjya ca
abhibho yamam kālam ca mṛtyum ca svargam sampūjya ca arhataḥ
3. bhīṣma uvāca abhibho,
tathā iti evam pratiśrutya,
dharmam sampūjya ca,
yamam kālam ca mṛtyum ca svargam ca arhataḥ sampūjya.
3. Bhishma said: 'So be it!' Having thus promised, and having honored natural law (dharma), O mighty one, and having worshipped Yama, Kāla (Time), Mṛtyu (Death), and Svarga (heaven), as well as the venerable ones.
पूर्वं ये चापरे तत्र समेता ब्राह्मणर्षभाः ।
सर्वान्संपूज्य शिरसा राजानं सोऽब्रवीद्वचः ॥४॥
4. pūrvaṁ ye cāpare tatra sametā brāhmaṇarṣabhāḥ ,
sarvānsaṁpūjya śirasā rājānaṁ so'bravīdvacaḥ.
4. pūrvam ye ca apare tatra sametāḥ brāhmaṇarṣabhāḥ
sarvān sampūjya śirasā rājānam saḥ abravīt vacaḥ
4. pūrvam tatra ye ca apare brāhmaṇarṣabhāḥ sametāḥ,
sarvān śirasā sampūjya,
saḥ rājānam vacaḥ abravīt.
4. And those other excellent Brahmins who had previously assembled there - having honored all of them by bowing his head, he then spoke these words to the king.
फलेनानेन संयुक्तो राजर्षे गच्छ पुण्यताम् ।
भवता चाभ्यनुज्ञातो जपेयं भूय एव हि ॥५॥
5. phalenānena saṁyukto rājarṣe gaccha puṇyatām ,
bhavatā cābhyanujñāto japeyaṁ bhūya eva hi.
5. phalena anena saṃyuktaḥ rājarṣe gaccha puṇyatām
bhavatā ca abhyanujñātaḥ japeyam bhūyaḥ eva hi
5. rājarṣe,
anena phalena saṃyuktaḥ puṇyatām gaccha.
ca,
bhavatā abhyanujñātaḥ san,
bhūyaḥ eva hi japeyam.
5. O royal sage, endowed with this merit (phala), attain holiness. And, being permitted by you, I would certainly chant again.
वरश्च मम पूर्वं हि देव्या दत्तो महाबल ।
श्रद्धा ते जपतो नित्यं भवितेति विशां पते ॥६॥
6. varaśca mama pūrvaṁ hi devyā datto mahābala ,
śraddhā te japato nityaṁ bhaviteti viśāṁ pate.
6. varaḥ ca mama pūrvam hi devyā dattaḥ mahābala
śraddhā te japataḥ nityam bhavitā iti viśām pate
6. mahābala viśām pate mama pūrvam hi devyā varaḥ
dattaḥ te japataḥ nityam śraddhā bhavitā iti
6. O mighty one, O lord of the people, a boon was indeed granted to me previously by the Goddess: 'Your faith (śraddhā) will be constant as you chant.'
राजोवाच ।
यद्येवमफला सिद्धिः श्रद्धा च जपितुं तव ।
गच्छ विप्र मया सार्धं जापकं फलमाप्नुहि ॥७॥
7. rājovāca ,
yadyevamaphalā siddhiḥ śraddhā ca japituṁ tava ,
gaccha vipra mayā sārdhaṁ jāpakaṁ phalamāpnuhi.
7. rājā uvāca yadi evam aphalā siddhiḥ śraddhā ca japitum
tava gaccha vipra mayā sārdham jāpakam phalam āpnuhi
7. rājā uvāca vipra yadi evam tava japitum siddhiḥ ca
śraddhā aphalā mayā sārdham gaccha jāpakam phalam āpnuhi
7. The King said: 'If your spiritual attainment (siddhi) and faith (śraddhā) in chanting are thus fruitless, O Brahmin, come with me and obtain the fruit of your chanting!'
ब्राह्मण उवाच ।
कृतः प्रयत्नः सुमहान्सर्वेषां संनिधाविह ।
सह तुल्यफलौ चावां गच्छावो यत्र नौ गतिः ॥८॥
8. brāhmaṇa uvāca ,
kṛtaḥ prayatnaḥ sumahānsarveṣāṁ saṁnidhāviha ,
saha tulyaphalau cāvāṁ gacchāvo yatra nau gatiḥ.
8. brāhmaṇaḥ uvāca kṛtaḥ prayatnaḥ su mahān sarveṣām sannidhau
iha saha tulyaphalau ca āvām gacchāvaḥ yatra nau gatiḥ
8. brāhmaṇaḥ uvāca iha sarveṣām sannidhau su mahān prayatnaḥ
kṛtaḥ ca āvām saha tulyaphalau gacchāvaḥ yatra nau gatiḥ
8. The Brahmin said: 'A very great effort has been made here in the presence of all. Now, let us both go together, sharing the same outcome (phala), to wherever our destiny leads us.'
भीष्म उवाच ।
व्यवसायं तयोस्तत्र विदित्वा त्रिदशेश्वरः ।
सह देवैरुपययौ लोकपालैस्तथैव च ॥९॥
9. bhīṣma uvāca ,
vyavasāyaṁ tayostatra viditvā tridaśeśvaraḥ ,
saha devairupayayau lokapālaistathaiva ca.
9. bhīṣmaḥ uvāca vyavasāyam tayoḥ tatra viditvā
tridaśeśvaraḥ saha devaiḥ upayayau lokapālaiḥ tathā eva ca
9. bhīṣmaḥ uvāca tatra tayoḥ vyavasāyam viditvā
tridaśeśvaraḥ devaiḥ saha tathā eva ca lokapālaiḥ upayayau
9. Bhishma said: 'Having understood the determination (vyavasāya) of those two there, the lord of the gods (Indra), accompanied by the deities and likewise the guardians of the world, approached.'
साध्या विश्वेऽथ मरुतो ज्योतींषि सुमहान्ति च ।
नद्यः शैलाः समुद्राश्च तीर्थानि विविधानि च ॥१०॥
10. sādhyā viśve'tha maruto jyotīṁṣi sumahānti ca ,
nadyaḥ śailāḥ samudrāśca tīrthāni vividhāni ca.
10. sādhyāḥ viśve atha marutaḥ jyotīṃṣi sumahānti ca
nadyaḥ śailāḥ samudrāḥ ca tīrthāni vividhāni ca
10. sādhyāḥ viśve atha marutaḥ ca sumahānti jyotīṃṣi
ca nadyaḥ śailāḥ ca samudrāḥ ca vividhāni tīrthāni
10. The Sādhyas, the Viśvas, and the Maruts, as well as the exceedingly great luminaries; rivers, mountains, and oceans, along with various holy places.
तपांसि संयोगविधिर्वेदाः स्तोभाः सरस्वती ।
नारदः पर्वतश्चैव विश्वावसुर्हहा हुहूः ॥११॥
11. tapāṁsi saṁyogavidhirvedāḥ stobhāḥ sarasvatī ,
nāradaḥ parvataścaiva viśvāvasurhahā huhūḥ.
11. tapāṃsi saṃyogavidhiḥ vedāḥ stobhāḥ sarasvatī
nāradaḥ parvataḥ ca eva viśvāvasuḥ hahā huhūḥ
11. tapāṃsi saṃyogavidhiḥ vedāḥ stobhāḥ sarasvatī
nāradaḥ parvataḥ ca eva viśvāvasuḥ hahā huhūḥ
11. Austerities (tapas), the practice of union (yoga), the Vedas, sacred chants, and Sarasvatī; Nārada and Parvata, as well as Viśvāvasu, Hahā, and Huhū (Gandharvas) (were present).
गन्धर्वश्चित्रसेनश्च परिवारगणैर्युतः ।
नागाः सिद्धाश्च मुनयो देवदेवः प्रजापतिः ।
विष्णुः सहस्रशीर्षश्च देवोऽचिन्त्यः समागमत् ॥१२॥
12. gandharvaścitrasenaśca parivāragaṇairyutaḥ ,
nāgāḥ siddhāśca munayo devadevaḥ prajāpatiḥ ,
viṣṇuḥ sahasraśīrṣaśca devo'cintyaḥ samāgamat.
12. gandharvaḥ citrasenaḥ ca parivāragaṇaiḥ
yutaḥ nāgāḥ siddhāḥ ca munayaḥ
devadevaḥ prajāpatiḥ viṣṇuḥ
sahasraśīrṣaḥ ca devaḥ acintyaḥ samāgamat
12. parivāragaṇaiḥ yutaḥ gandharvaḥ
citrasenaḥ ca nāgāḥ siddhāḥ ca munayaḥ
devadevaḥ prajāpatiḥ viṣṇuḥ
sahasraśīrṣaḥ ca acintyaḥ devaḥ samāgamat
12. The Gandharvas, and Citrasena accompanied by his retinue of attendants; the Nāgas, Siddhas, and sages; Prajāpati, the lord of gods; and Viṣṇu, the thousand-headed, the inconceivable deity, all assembled.
अवाद्यन्तान्तरिक्षे च भेर्यस्तूर्याणि चाभिभो ।
पुष्पवर्षाणि दिव्यानि तत्र तेषां महात्मनाम् ।
ननृतुश्चाप्सरःसंघास्तत्र तत्र समन्ततः ॥१३॥
13. avādyantāntarikṣe ca bheryastūryāṇi cābhibho ,
puṣpavarṣāṇi divyāni tatra teṣāṁ mahātmanām ,
nanṛtuścāpsaraḥsaṁghāstatra tatra samantataḥ.
13. avādyanta antarikṣe ca bheryaḥ tūryāṇi
ca abhibho puṣpavarṣāṇi divyāni
tatra teṣām mahātmanām nanṛtuḥ ca
apsarasaṃghāḥ tatra tatra samantataḥ
13. abhibho ca antarikṣe bheryaḥ ca
tūryāṇi avādyanta tatra divyāni puṣpavarṣāṇi
teṣām mahātmanām ca apsarasaṃghāḥ
tatra tatra samantataḥ nanṛtuḥ
13. And in the sky, drums and trumpets were played, O venerable one! Divine showers of flowers rained down there upon those great souls (mahātmans); and throngs of Apsaras danced here and there, all around.
अथ स्वर्गस्तथा रूपी ब्राह्मणं वाक्यमब्रवीत् ।
संसिद्धस्त्वं महाभाग त्वं च सिद्धस्तथा नृप ॥१४॥
14. atha svargastathā rūpī brāhmaṇaṁ vākyamabravīt ,
saṁsiddhastvaṁ mahābhāga tvaṁ ca siddhastathā nṛpa.
14. atha svargaḥ tathā rūpī brāhmaṇam vākyam abravīt
saṃsiddhaḥ tvam mahābhāga tvam ca siddhaḥ tathā nṛpa
14. atha rūpī svargaḥ tathā brāhmaṇam vākyam abravīt
mahābhāga tvam saṃsiddhaḥ tathā nṛpa tvam ca siddhaḥ
14. Then, Heaven, appearing in a manifest form, spoke these words to the brahmin: "O greatly fortunate one, you are perfectly accomplished! And O King, you too are perfected."
अथ तौ सहितौ राजन्नन्योन्येन विधानतः ।
विषयप्रतिसंहारमुभावेव प्रचक्रतुः ॥१५॥
15. atha tau sahitau rājannanyonyena vidhānataḥ ,
viṣayapratisaṁhāramubhāveva pracakratuḥ.
15. atha tau sahitau rājan anyonyena vidhānataḥ
viṣayapratisaṃhāram ubhau eva pracakratuḥ
15. rājan atha tau sahitau ubhau eva anyonyena
vidhānataḥ viṣayapratisaṃhāram pracakratuḥ
15. Then, O King, those two, united, both methodically undertook the withdrawal of sense objects (viṣaya-pratisaṃhāra) from one another.
प्राणापानौ तथोदानं समानं व्यानमेव च ।
एवं तान्मनसि स्थाप्य दधतुः प्राणयोर्मनः ॥१६॥
16. prāṇāpānau tathodānaṁ samānaṁ vyānameva ca ,
evaṁ tānmanasi sthāpya dadhatuḥ prāṇayormanaḥ.
16. prāṇāpānau tathā udānam samānam vyānam eva ca
evam tān manasi sthāpya dadhatuḥ prāṇayoḥ manaḥ
16. prāṇāpānau tathā udānam samānam vyānam eva ca
evam tān manasi sthāpya prāṇayoḥ manaḥ dadhatuḥ
16. Having thus placed prāṇa, apāna, udāna, samāna, and vyāna - the vital airs - into the mind (manas), they both then fixed the mind (manas) upon the two breaths (prāṇāpānau).
उपस्थितकृतौ तत्र नासिकाग्रमधो भ्रुवौ ।
कुङ्कुण्यां चैव मनसा शनैर्धारयतः स्म तौ ॥१७॥
17. upasthitakṛtau tatra nāsikāgramadho bhruvau ,
kuṅkuṇyāṁ caiva manasā śanairdhārayataḥ sma tau.
17. upasthitakṛtau tatra nāsikāagram adhaḥ bhruvau
kuṅkuṇyām ca eva manasā śanaiḥ dhārayataḥ sma tau
17. tau upasthitakṛtau tatra nāsikāagram adhaḥ bhruvau
kuṅkuṇyām ca eva manasā śanaiḥ dhārayataḥ sma
17. Those two, who were prepared and ready, then slowly fixed their mind (manas) in those places: at the tip of the nose, below the eyebrows, and also in the kuṅkuṇī (a specific subtle energy point).
निश्चेष्टाभ्यां शरीराभ्यां स्थिरदृष्टी समाहितौ ।
जितासनौ तथाधाय मूर्धन्यात्मानमेव च ॥१८॥
18. niśceṣṭābhyāṁ śarīrābhyāṁ sthiradṛṣṭī samāhitau ,
jitāsanau tathādhāya mūrdhanyātmānameva ca.
18. niśceṣṭābhyām śarīrābhyām sthiradṛṣṭī samāhitau
jitāsanau tathā ādhāya mūrdhani ātmānam eva ca
18. sthiradṛṣṭī samāhitau jitāsanau niśceṣṭābhyām
śarīrābhyām tathā ātmānam mūrdhani eva ca ādhāya
18. They, with steady gaze, composed, and having mastered their postures, having rendered their two bodies motionless, then placed the self (ātman) on the crown of the head.
तालुदेशमथोद्दाल्य ब्राह्मणस्य महात्मनः ।
ज्योतिर्ज्वाला सुमहती जगाम त्रिदिवं तदा ॥१९॥
19. tāludeśamathoddālya brāhmaṇasya mahātmanaḥ ,
jyotirjvālā sumahatī jagāma tridivaṁ tadā.
19. tāludeśam atha uddālya brāhmaṇasya mahātmanaḥ
jyotirjvālā sumahatī jagāma tridivam tadā
19. atha mahātmanaḥ brāhmaṇasya tāludeśam uddālya,
tadā sumahatī jyotirjvālā tridivam jagāma
19. Then, having pierced the region of the palate of that great-souled (mahātman) Brahmin, a very great flame of light went to heaven (tridivam) at that time.
हाहाकारस्ततो दिक्षु सर्वासु सुमहानभूत् ।
तज्ज्योतिः स्तूयमानं स्म ब्रह्माणं प्राविशत्तदा ॥२०॥
20. hāhākārastato dikṣu sarvāsu sumahānabhūt ,
tajjyotiḥ stūyamānaṁ sma brahmāṇaṁ prāviśattadā.
20. hāhākāraḥ tataḥ dikṣu sarvāsu sumahān abhūt tat
jyotiḥ stūyamānam sma brahmāṇam prāviśat tadā
20. tataḥ sarvāsu dikṣu sumahān hāhākāraḥ abhūt;
stūyamānam tat jyotiḥ sma tadā brahmāṇam prāviśat
20. Thence, a very great cry of lamentation arose in all directions. That light, being praised, then entered Brahmā.
ततः स्वागतमित्याह तत्तेजः स पितामहः ।
प्रादेशमात्रं पुरुषं प्रत्युद्गम्य विशां पते ॥२१॥
21. tataḥ svāgatamityāha tattejaḥ sa pitāmahaḥ ,
prādeśamātraṁ puruṣaṁ pratyudgamya viśāṁ pate.
21. tataḥ svāgatam iti āha tat tejas saḥ pitāmahaḥ
prādeśamātram puruṣam prati udgamya viśām pate
21. viśām pate,
tataḥ saḥ pitāmahaḥ,
prādeśamātram puruṣam tat tejas prati udgamya,
iti svāgatam āha
21. O lord of the people, then that Grandfather [Brahmā], having gone forth to meet that light, which was a person (puruṣa) of a span's measure, said, 'Welcome!'
भूयश्चैवापरं प्राह वचनं मधुरं स्म सः ।
जापकैस्तुल्यफलता योगानां नात्र संशयः ॥२२॥
22. bhūyaścaivāparaṁ prāha vacanaṁ madhuraṁ sma saḥ ,
jāpakaistulyaphalatā yogānāṁ nātra saṁśayaḥ.
22. bhūyas ca eva aparam prāha vacanam madhuram sma
saḥ jāpakaiḥ tulyaphalatā yogānām na atra saṃśayaḥ
22. saḥ bhūyaḥ ca eva aparaṃ madhuraṃ vacanaṃ prāha
atra yogānām jāpakaiḥ tulyaphalatā na saṃśayaḥ
22. And again he spoke another sweet word: 'There is no doubt here that the fruit (result) for those engaged in spiritual practices (yoga) is equal to that for reciters [of mantras].'
योगस्य तावदेतेभ्यः फलं प्रत्यक्षदर्शनम् ।
जापकानां विशिष्टं तु प्रत्युत्थानं समाधिकम् ॥२३॥
23. yogasya tāvadetebhyaḥ phalaṁ pratyakṣadarśanam ,
jāpakānāṁ viśiṣṭaṁ tu pratyutthānaṁ samādhikam.
23. yogasyā tāvat etebhyaḥ phalam pratyakṣadarśanam
jāpakānām viśiṣṭam tu pratyutthānam samādhikam
23. etebhyaḥ yogasya phalaṃ tāvat pratyakṣadarśanam
tu jāpakānām viśiṣṭaṃ samādhikaṃ pratyutthānam
23. Indeed, the fruit (result) of these [various] spiritual disciplines (yoga) is direct perception. However, for reciters [of mantras], the distinct manifestation is characterized by profound concentration.
उष्यतां मयि चेत्युक्त्वाचेतयत्स ततः पुनः ।
अथास्य प्रविवेशास्यं ब्राह्मणो विगतज्वरः ॥२४॥
24. uṣyatāṁ mayi cetyuktvācetayatsa tataḥ punaḥ ,
athāsya praviveśāsyaṁ brāhmaṇo vigatajvaraḥ.
24. uṣyatām mayi ca iti uktvā acetayat saḥ tataḥ punaḥ
atha asya praviveśa āsyam brāhmaṇaḥ vigatajvaraḥ
24. 'mayi uṣyatām' ca iti uktvā saḥ tataḥ punaḥ acetayat
atha vigatajvaraḥ brāhmaṇaḥ asya āsyam praviveśa
24. And having said, 'Let [him] reside within me,' he then again brought him to consciousness. Thereupon, the Brahmin, freed from distress, entered his mouth.
राजाप्येतेन विधिना भगवन्तं पितामहम् ।
यथैव द्विजशार्दूलस्तथैव प्राविशत्तदा ॥२५॥
25. rājāpyetena vidhinā bhagavantaṁ pitāmaham ,
yathaiva dvijaśārdūlastathaiva prāviśattadā.
25. rājā api etena vidhinā bhagavantam pitāmaham
yathā eva dvijaśārdūlaḥ tathā eva prāviśat tadā
25. api rājā etena vidhinā yathā eva dvijaśārdūlaḥ
tathā eva tadā bhagavantam pitāmahaṃ prāviśat
25. And the king also, by this very method, then entered the revered Grandfather [Brahma], just as the foremost among Brahmins had entered [him].
स्वयंभुवमथो देवा अभिवाद्य ततोऽब्रुवन् ।
जापकार्थमयं यत्नस्तदर्थं वयमागताः ॥२६॥
26. svayaṁbhuvamatho devā abhivādya tato'bruvan ,
jāpakārthamayaṁ yatnastadarthaṁ vayamāgatāḥ.
26. svayambhuvaṃ atho devāḥ abhivādya tataḥ abruvan
jāpaka artham ayam yatnaḥ tat artham vayam āgatāḥ
26. devāḥ atho svayambhuvaṃ abhivādya tataḥ abruvan
ayam yatnaḥ jāpaka artham vayam tat artham āgatāḥ
26. Then the gods, having paid their respects to Svayambhu (Brahma), said: "This endeavor is for the purpose of recitation, and it is for that reason that we have arrived."
कृतपूजाविमौ तुल्यं त्वया तुल्यफलाविमौ ।
योगजापकयोर्दृष्टं फलं सुमहदद्य वै ।
सर्वाँल्लोकानतीत्यैतौ गच्छेतां यत्र वाञ्छितम् ॥२७॥
27. kṛtapūjāvimau tulyaṁ tvayā tulyaphalāvimau ,
yogajāpakayordṛṣṭaṁ phalaṁ sumahadadya vai ,
sarvāँllokānatītyaitau gacchetāṁ yatra vāñchitam.
27. kṛta-pūjau imau tulyam tvayā tulya-phalau
imau yoga-jāpakayoḥ dṛṣṭam phalam
su-mahat adya vai sarvān lokān
atītya etau gacche-tām yatra vāñchitam
27. imau kṛtapūjau tvayā tulyam imau
tulya-phalau adya vai yoga-jāpakayoḥ
su-mahat phalam dṛṣṭam etau sarvān lokān
atītya yatra vāñchitam gacche-tām
27. These two, for whom worship has been performed, are equal to you, and these two will attain equal results. Today, indeed, a very great fruit (result) has been seen for both (disciplines of) yoga (yoga) and recitation. Having transcended all worlds, these two shall go wherever they wish.
ब्रह्मोवाच ।
महास्मृतिं पठेद्यस्तु तथैवानुस्मृतिं शुभाम् ।
तावप्येतेन विधिना गच्छेतां मत्सलोकताम् ॥२८॥
28. brahmovāca ,
mahāsmṛtiṁ paṭhedyastu tathaivānusmṛtiṁ śubhām ,
tāvapyetena vidhinā gacchetāṁ matsalokatām.

śubhām tau api etena vidhinā gacche-tām mat-sa-lokatām

28. Brahma said: "Whoever recites the Mahāsmṛti and likewise the auspicious Anusmṛti, those two (individuals, by extension) shall also, by this very method, attain a common world with me (matsalokatām)."
यश्च योगे भवेद्भक्तः सोऽपि नास्त्यत्र संशयः ।
विधिनानेन देहान्ते मम लोकानवाप्नुयात् ।
गम्यतां साधयिष्यामि यथास्थानानि सिद्धये ॥२९॥
29. yaśca yoge bhavedbhaktaḥ so'pi nāstyatra saṁśayaḥ ,
vidhinānena dehānte mama lokānavāpnuyāt ,
gamyatāṁ sādhayiṣyāmi yathāsthānāni siddhaye.
29. yaḥ ca yoge bhavet bhaktaḥ saḥ api na
asti atra saṃśayaḥ vidhinā anena
deha-ante mama lokān avāpnuyāt gamyatām
sādhayiṣyāmi yathā-sthānāni siddhaye
29. yaḥ ca yoge bhaktaḥ bhavet saḥ api atra
saṃśayaḥ na asti anena vidhinā deha-ante
mama lokān avāpnuyāt gamyatām aham
yathā-sthānāni siddhaye sādhayiṣyāmi
29. And whoever is devoted (bhakta) to (the practice of) yoga (yoga) – there is no doubt about this – he also, by this method, shall attain my realms (lokān) at the end of his life. Let this be done (or, let the departure be made)! I shall arrange the proper places for their accomplishment.
भीष्म उवाच ।
इत्युक्त्वा स तदा देवस्तत्रैवान्तरधीयत ।
आमन्त्र्य तं ततो देवा ययुः स्वं स्वं निवेशनम् ॥३०॥
30. bhīṣma uvāca ,
ityuktvā sa tadā devastatraivāntaradhīyata ,
āmantrya taṁ tato devā yayuḥ svaṁ svaṁ niveśanam.
30. bhīṣmaḥ uvāca iti uktvā saḥ tadā devaḥ tatra eva antaradhīyata
āmantrya tam tataḥ devāḥ yayuḥ svam svam niveśanam
30. bhīṣmaḥ uvāca saḥ devaḥ tadā iti uktvā tatra eva antaradhīyata
tataḥ devāḥ tam āmantrya svam svam niveśanam yayuḥ
30. Bhishma said: Having spoken thus, that deity then disappeared right there. After taking leave of him, the gods then returned to their respective dwellings.
ते च सर्वे महात्मानो धर्मं सत्कृत्य तत्र वै ।
पृष्ठतोऽनुययू राजन्सर्वे सुप्रीतमानसाः ॥३१॥
31. te ca sarve mahātmāno dharmaṁ satkṛtya tatra vai ,
pṛṣṭhato'nuyayū rājansarve suprītamānasāḥ.
31. te ca sarve mahātmānaḥ dharmam satkṛtya tatra
vai pṛṣṭataḥ anuyayuḥ rājan sarve suprītamānasāḥ
31. rājan te ca sarve mahātmānaḥ tatra vai dharmam
satkṛtya sarve suprītamānasāḥ pṛṣṭataḥ anuyayuḥ
31. O King, all those great souls, having honored the natural law (dharma) there, followed behind, all with greatly pleased minds.
एतत्फलं जापकानां गतिश्चैव प्रकीर्तिता ।
यथाश्रुतं महाराज किं भूयः श्रोतुमिच्छसि ॥३२॥
32. etatphalaṁ jāpakānāṁ gatiścaiva prakīrtitā ,
yathāśrutaṁ mahārāja kiṁ bhūyaḥ śrotumicchasi.
32. etat phalam jāpakānām gatiḥ ca eva prakīrtitā
yathāśrutam mahārāja kim bhūyaḥ śrotum icchasi
32. etat phalam jāpakānām gatiḥ ca eva prakīrtitā
mahārāja yathāśrutam kim bhūyaḥ śrotum icchasi
32. This is the result for those who practice chanting (japa), and their ultimate destination is also thus proclaimed. O great King, this is what I have heard; what more do you wish to hear?
