शकुनिर्मातुलस्तेऽसौ रथ एको नराधिप ।
प्रसज्य पाण्डवैर्वैरं योत्स्यते नात्र संशयः ॥१॥
1. bhīṣma uvāca ,
śakunirmātulaste'sau ratha eko narādhipa ,
prasajya pāṇḍavairvairaṁ yotsyate nātra saṁśayaḥ.

1. Bhishma spoke: "O King, this maternal uncle of yours, Shakuni, the unique charioteer, having provoked hostility with the Pandavas, will certainly fight; there is no doubt about this."
एतस्य सैन्या दुर्धर्षाः समरेऽप्रतियायिनः ।
विकृतायुधभूयिष्ठा वायुवेगसमा जवे ॥२॥
2. etasya sainyā durdharṣāḥ samare'pratiyāyinaḥ ,
vikṛtāyudhabhūyiṣṭhā vāyuvegasamā jave.
2. etasya sainyāḥ durdharṣāḥ samare apratiyāyinaḥ
vikṛtāyudhabhūyiṣṭhāḥ vāyuvegasamāḥ jave

2. His troops are irresistible in battle, never retreating. Most of them are equipped with formidable weapons, and they are equal to the wind's speed in their swiftness.
द्रोणपुत्रो महेष्वासः सर्वेषामति धन्विनाम् ।
समरे चित्रयोधी च दृढास्त्रश्च महारथः ॥३॥
3. droṇaputro maheṣvāsaḥ sarveṣāmati dhanvinām ,
samare citrayodhī ca dṛḍhāstraśca mahārathaḥ.

3. Drona's son (Ashvatthama) is a great archer, superior to all bowmen. In battle, he is a wondrous fighter, and with his potent weapons, he is truly a mighty warrior.
एतस्य हि महाराज यथा गाण्डीवधन्वनः ।
शरासनाद्विनिर्मुक्ताः संसक्ता यान्ति सायकाः ॥४॥
4. etasya hi mahārāja yathā gāṇḍīvadhanvanaḥ ,
śarāsanādvinirmuktāḥ saṁsaktā yānti sāyakāḥ.

śarāsanāt vinirmuktāḥ saṃsaktāḥ yānti sāyakāḥ
4. he mahārāja hi etasya sāyakāḥ yathā gāṇḍīvadhanvanaḥ

4. O Great King, indeed, just as arrows released from the bow of Arjuna, the wielder of Gāṇḍīva, so too do his (Ashvatthama's) arrows fly forth incessantly.
नैष शक्यो मया वीरः संख्यातुं रथसत्तमः ।
निर्दहेदपि लोकांस्त्रीनिच्छन्नेष महायशाः ॥५॥
5. naiṣa śakyo mayā vīraḥ saṁkhyātuṁ rathasattamaḥ ,
nirdahedapi lokāṁstrīnicchanneṣa mahāyaśāḥ.
5. na eṣaḥ śakyaḥ mayā vīraḥ saṃkhyātum rathasattamaḥ
nirdaded api lokān trīn icchan eṣaḥ mahāyaśāḥ
5. vīraḥ mayā eṣaḥ rathasattamaḥ saṃkhyātum na śakyaḥ
eṣaḥ mahāyaśāḥ icchan api trīn lokān nirdaded
5. O hero, I cannot adequately measure the might of this supreme charioteer. This greatly renowned warrior, if he so desired, could incinerate even the three worlds.
क्रोधस्तेजश्च तपसा संभृतोऽऽश्रमवासिना ।
द्रोणेनानुगृहीतश्च दिव्यैरस्त्रैरुदारधीः ॥६॥
6. krodhastejaśca tapasā saṁbhṛto''śramavāsinā ,
droṇenānugṛhītaśca divyairastrairudāradhīḥ.
6. krodhaḥ tejaḥ ca tapasā saṃbhṛtaḥ āśramavāsinā
droṇena anugṛhītaḥ ca divyaiḥ astraiḥ udāradhīḥ
6. āśramavāsinā tapasā krodhaḥ ca tejaḥ saṃbhṛtaḥ
ca droṇena divyaiḥ astraiḥ anugṛhītaḥ udāradhīḥ
6. His wrath and spiritual power (tejas) have been accumulated through asceticism (tapas) by him, a dweller of the hermitage. And this noble-minded one was also favored by Droṇa with divine weapons.
दोषस्त्वस्य महानेको येनैष भरतर्षभ ।
न मे रथो नातिरथो मतः पार्थिवसत्तम ॥७॥
7. doṣastvasya mahāneko yenaiṣa bharatarṣabha ,
na me ratho nātiratho mataḥ pārthivasattama.
7. doṣaḥ tu asya mahān ekaḥ yena eṣaḥ bharatarṣabha
na me rathaḥ na atirathaḥ mataḥ pārthivasattama
7. bharatarṣabha pārthivasattama tu asya mahān ekaḥ
doṣaḥ yena eṣaḥ me rathaḥ na mataḥ na atirathaḥ
7. However, O best of Bharatas, he possesses one major flaw. Because of this, O supreme king, I do not consider him a charioteer (ratha) or even a supreme charioteer (atiratha).
जीवितं प्रियमत्यर्थमायुष्कामः सदा द्विजः ।
न ह्यस्य सदृशः कश्चिदुभयोः सेनयोरपि ॥८॥
8. jīvitaṁ priyamatyarthamāyuṣkāmaḥ sadā dvijaḥ ,
na hyasya sadṛśaḥ kaścidubhayoḥ senayorapi.
8. jīvitam priyam atyartham āyuṣkāmaḥ sadā dvijaḥ
na hi asya sadṛśaḥ kaścit ubhayoḥ senayoḥ api
8. dvijaḥ sadā āyuṣkāmaḥ atyartham jīvitam priyam
hi asya sadṛśaḥ kaścit ubhayoḥ senayoḥ api na
8. For the twice-born (dvija) always desires a long life and holds his own life extremely dear. Indeed, there is no one like him in either of the two armies.
हन्यादेकरथेनैव देवानामपि वाहिनीम् ।
वपुष्मांस्तलघोषेण स्फोटयेदपि पर्वतान् ॥९॥
9. hanyādekarathenaiva devānāmapi vāhinīm ,
vapuṣmāṁstalaghoṣeṇa sphoṭayedapi parvatān.
9. hanyāt ekarathena eva devānām api vāhinīm |
vapuṣmān talaghoṣeṇa sphoṭayet api parvatān
9. hanyāt api devānām vāhinīm ekarathena eva.
vapuṣmān api sphoṭayet parvatān talaghoṣeṇa.
9. With just a single chariot, he could destroy even the army of the gods. This powerful individual, with the mere sound of his palm-slap, could even shatter mountains.
असंख्येयगुणो वीरः प्रहर्ता दारुणद्युतिः ।
दण्डपाणिरिवासह्यः कालवत्प्रचरिष्यति ॥१०॥
10. asaṁkhyeyaguṇo vīraḥ prahartā dāruṇadyutiḥ ,
daṇḍapāṇirivāsahyaḥ kālavatpracariṣyati.
10. asaṅkhyeyaguṇaḥ vīraḥ prahartā dāruṇadyutiḥ
| daṇḍapāṇiḥ iva asahyaḥ kālavat pracariṣyati
10. vīraḥ asaṅkhyeyaguṇaḥ prahartā dāruṇadyutiḥ daṇḍapāṇiḥ iva asahyaḥ kālavat pracariṣyati.
10. This hero, endowed with countless qualities, is a formidable attacker of terrifying brilliance. Irresistible like Daṇḍapāṇi (Yama), he will move about (in battle) like the destructive force of time (kāla).
युगान्ताग्निसमः क्रोधे सिंहग्रीवो महामतिः ।
एष भारत युद्धस्य पृष्ठं संशमयिष्यति ॥११॥
11. yugāntāgnisamaḥ krodhe siṁhagrīvo mahāmatiḥ ,
eṣa bhārata yuddhasya pṛṣṭhaṁ saṁśamayiṣyati.
11. yugāntāgnisamaḥ krodhe siṃhagrīvaḥ mahāmatiḥ |
eṣaḥ bhārata yuddhasya pṛṣṭham saṃśamayisyati
11. eṣaḥ mahāmatiḥ siṃhagrīvaḥ krodhe yugāntāgnisamaḥ.
bhārata,
yuddhasya pṛṣṭham saṃśamayisyati.
11. This great-minded hero, whose neck is like a lion's, is like the fire of universal dissolution (yugānta-agni) in his anger. O Bhārata, he will put an end to the very core of the war.
पिता त्वस्य महातेजा वृद्धोऽपि युवभिर्वरः ।
रणे कर्म महत्कर्ता तत्र मे नास्ति संशयः ॥१२॥
12. pitā tvasya mahātejā vṛddho'pi yuvabhirvaraḥ ,
raṇe karma mahatkartā tatra me nāsti saṁśayaḥ.
12. pitā tu asya mahātejāḥ vṛddhaḥ api yuvabhiḥ varaḥ
| raṇe karma mahat kartā tatra me na asti saṃśayaḥ
12. tu asya pitā,
mahātejāḥ vṛddhaḥ api,
yuvabhiḥ varaḥ.
raṇe mahat karma kartā.
tatra me saṃśayaḥ na asti.
12. But his father, of great prowess, though aged, is superior even to the young warriors. He will perform mighty actions (karma) in battle. Regarding this, I have no doubt.
अस्त्रवेगानिलोद्धूतः सेनाकक्षेन्धनोत्थितः ।
पाण्डुपुत्रस्य सैन्यानि प्रधक्ष्यति जये धृतः ॥१३॥
13. astravegāniloddhūtaḥ senākakṣendhanotthitaḥ ,
pāṇḍuputrasya sainyāni pradhakṣyati jaye dhṛtaḥ.
13. astravegāniloddhūtaḥ senākakṣendhanotthitaḥ
pāṇḍuputrasya sainyāni pradhakṣyati jaye dhṛtaḥ
13. dhṛtaḥ astravegāniloddhūtaḥ senākakṣendhanotthitaḥ
jaye pāṇḍuputrasya sainyāni pradhakṣyati
13. He, agitated by the wind-like speed of weapons and rising like a fire from the fuel of the army's thickets, when he is steadfastly held for victory, will utterly consume the armies of Pāṇḍu's son.
रथयूथपयूथानां यूथपः स नरर्षभः ।
भारद्वाजात्मजः कर्ता कर्म तीव्रं हिताय वः ॥१४॥
14. rathayūthapayūthānāṁ yūthapaḥ sa nararṣabhaḥ ,
bhāradvājātmajaḥ kartā karma tīvraṁ hitāya vaḥ.
14. rathayūthapayūthānām yūthapaḥ saḥ nararṣabhaḥ
bhāradvājātmajaḥ kartā karma tīvram hitāya vaḥ
14. saḥ nararṣabhaḥ bhāradvājātmajaḥ rathayūthapayūthānām
yūthapaḥ vaḥ hitāya tīvram karma kartā
14. That great man (nararṣabhaḥ), the son of Bhāradvāja (Droṇa), the leader of the leaders of chariot groups, will perform a terrible action (karma) for your welfare.
सर्वमूर्धाभिषिक्तानामाचार्यः स्थविरो गुरुः ।
गच्छेदन्तं सृञ्जयानां प्रियस्त्वस्य धनंजयः ॥१५॥
15. sarvamūrdhābhiṣiktānāmācāryaḥ sthaviro guruḥ ,
gacchedantaṁ sṛñjayānāṁ priyastvasya dhanaṁjayaḥ.
15. sarvamūrdhābhiṣiktānām ācāryaḥ sthaviraḥ guruḥ
gacchet antam sṛñjayānām priyaḥ tu asya dhanaṃjayaḥ
15. sthaviraḥ guruḥ sarvamūrdhābhiṣiktānām ācāryaḥ
sṛñjayānām antam gacchet tu asya priyaḥ dhanaṃjayaḥ
15. The venerable (guru) and aged teacher (ācāryaḥ) of all crowned kings may indeed bring about the end of the Sṛñjayas; but Dhananjaya (Arjuna) is dear to him.
नैष जातु महेष्वासः पार्थमक्लिष्टकारिणम् ।
हन्यादाचार्यकं दीप्तं संस्मृत्य गुणनिर्जितम् ॥१६॥
16. naiṣa jātu maheṣvāsaḥ pārthamakliṣṭakāriṇam ,
hanyādācāryakaṁ dīptaṁ saṁsmṛtya guṇanirjitam.
16. na eṣaḥ jātu maheṣvāsaḥ pārtham akliṣṭakāriṇam
hanyāt ācāryakam dīptam saṃsmṛtya guṇanirjitam
16. eṣaḥ maheṣvāsaḥ jātu akliṣṭakāriṇam pārtham na
hanyāt dīptam guṇanirjitam ācāryakam saṃsmṛtya
16. This great archer (maheṣvāsaḥ) will certainly never kill Pārtha (Arjuna), the one who acts effortlessly, remembering his glorious role as a teacher (ācāryakaṃ) and having been won over by Arjuna's qualities.
श्लाघत्येष सदा वीरः पार्थस्य गुणविस्तरैः ।
पुत्रादभ्यधिकं चैव भारद्वाजोऽनुपश्यति ॥१७॥
17. ślāghatyeṣa sadā vīraḥ pārthasya guṇavistaraiḥ ,
putrādabhyadhikaṁ caiva bhāradvājo'nupaśyati.
17. ślāghati eṣa sadā vīraḥ pārthasya guṇa-vistaraiḥ
putrāt abhyadhikam ca eva bhāradvājaḥ anupaśyati
17. eṣa vīraḥ sadā pārthasya guṇa-vistaraiḥ ślāghati
ca eva bhāradvājaḥ putrāt abhyadhikam anupaśyati
17. This hero (Dronacharya) always praises the extensive qualities of Arjuna (Pārtha). Indeed, Bhāradvāja (Dronacharya) considers him superior even to his own son.
हन्यादेकरथेनैव देवगन्धर्वदानवान् ।
एकीभूतानपि रणे दिव्यैरस्त्रैः प्रतापवान् ॥१८॥
18. hanyādekarathenaiva devagandharvadānavān ,
ekībhūtānapi raṇe divyairastraiḥ pratāpavān.
18. hanyāt eka-rathena eva deva-gandharva-dānavān
ekībhūtān api raṇe divyaiḥ astraiḥ pratāpavān
18. pratāpavān eka-rathena eva divyaiḥ astraiḥ raṇe
ekībhūtān api deva-gandharva-dānavān hanyāt
18. That mighty (pratāpavān) one (Arjuna), with his divine weapons, could indeed slay the gods, gandharvas, and dānavas, even if they were united in battle, all from a single chariot.
पौरवो राजशार्दूलस्तव राजन्महारथः ।
मतो मम रथो वीर परवीररथारुजः ॥१९॥
19. pauravo rājaśārdūlastava rājanmahārathaḥ ,
mato mama ratho vīra paravīrarathārujaḥ.
19. pauravaḥ rāja-śārdūlaḥ tava rājan mahā-rathaḥ
mataḥ mama rathaḥ vīra para-vīra-ratha-ārujaḥ
19. rājan tava pauravaḥ rāja-śārdūlaḥ mahā-rathaḥ (asti) vīra
mama mataḥ (saḥ) para-vīra-ratha-ārujaḥ rathaḥ (asti)
19. O King (rājan), your Paurava, the best among kings (rājaśārdūla), is a great chariot-warrior (mahāratha). O hero (vīra), he is considered by me to be a warrior capable of destroying the chariots of enemy heroes.
स्वेन सैन्येन सहितः प्रतपञ्शत्रुवाहिनीम् ।
प्रधक्ष्यति स पाञ्चालान्कक्षं कृष्णगतिर्यथा ॥२०॥
20. svena sainyena sahitaḥ pratapañśatruvāhinīm ,
pradhakṣyati sa pāñcālānkakṣaṁ kṛṣṇagatiryathā.
20. svena sainyena sahitaḥ pratapan śatru-vāhinīm
pradhakṣyati sa pāñcālān kakṣam kṛṣṇa-gatiḥ yathā
20. sa svena sainyena sahitaḥ śatru-vāhinīm pratapan pāñcālān
pradhakṣyati yathā kṛṣṇa-gatiḥ kakṣam (pradhakṣyati)
20. Accompanied by his own army, he (Paurava), tormenting the enemy forces, will incinerate the Pañcālas, just as fire (kṛṣṇagati) consumes dry grass.
सत्यव्रतो रथवरो राजपुत्रो महारथः ।
तव राजन्रिपुबले कालवत्प्रचरिष्यति ॥२१॥
21. satyavrato rathavaro rājaputro mahārathaḥ ,
tava rājanripubale kālavatpracariṣyati.
21. satyavrataḥ rathavaraḥ rājaputraḥ mahārathaḥ
tava rājan ripubale kālavat pracariṣyati
21. rājan tava rājaputraḥ satyavrataḥ rathavaraḥ
mahārathaḥ ripubale kālavat pracariṣyati
21. O King, your prince Satyavrata, who is a great chariot-fighter and the best of charioteers, will move about in the enemy forces like Death itself.
एतस्य योधा राजेन्द्र विचित्रकवचायुधाः ।
विचरिष्यन्ति संग्रामे निघ्नन्तः शात्रवांस्तव ॥२२॥
22. etasya yodhā rājendra vicitrakavacāyudhāḥ ,
vicariṣyanti saṁgrāme nighnantaḥ śātravāṁstava.
22. etasya yodhāḥ rājendra vicitrakavacāyudhāḥ
vicariṣyanti saṅgrāme nighnantaḥ śātravān tava
22. rājendra etasya yodhāḥ vicitrakavacāyudhāḥ
saṅgrāme tava śātravān nighnantaḥ vicariṣyanti
22. O King of kings, his warriors, adorned with splendid armor and diverse weapons, will move about in the battle, striking down your enemies.
वृषसेनो रथाग्र्यस्ते कर्णपुत्रो महारथः ।
प्रधक्ष्यति रिपूणां ते बलानि बलिनां वरः ॥२३॥
23. vṛṣaseno rathāgryaste karṇaputro mahārathaḥ ,
pradhakṣyati ripūṇāṁ te balāni balināṁ varaḥ.
23. vṛṣasenaḥ rathāgryaḥ te karṇaputraḥ mahārathaḥ
pradhakṣyati ripūṇām te balāni balinām varaḥ
23. te vṛṣasenaḥ karṇaputraḥ rathāgryaḥ mahārathaḥ
balinām varaḥ te ripūṇām balāni pradhakṣyati
23. Your Vrishasena, Karna's son, an excellent charioteer, a great chariot-fighter, and the best among the powerful, will consume the forces of your enemies.
जलसंधो महातेजा राजन्रथवरस्तव ।
त्यक्ष्यते समरे प्राणान्मागधः परवीरहा ॥२४॥
24. jalasaṁdho mahātejā rājanrathavarastava ,
tyakṣyate samare prāṇānmāgadhaḥ paravīrahā.
24. jalasaṃdhaḥ mahātejāḥ rājan rathavaraḥ tava
tyakṣyate samare prāṇān māgadhaḥ paravīrahā
24. rājan tava jalasaṃdhaḥ māgadhaḥ mahātejāḥ
rathavaraḥ paravīrahā samare prāṇān tyakṣyate
24. O King, your Jalasandha, the Magadha prince, a very mighty and excellent charioteer, and a slayer of hostile heroes, will abandon his life in battle.
एष योत्स्यति संग्रामे गजस्कन्धविशारदः ।
रथेन वा महाबाहुः क्षपयञ्शत्रुवाहिनीम् ॥२५॥
25. eṣa yotsyati saṁgrāme gajaskandhaviśāradaḥ ,
rathena vā mahābāhuḥ kṣapayañśatruvāhinīm.
25. eṣa yotsyati saṃgrāme gajaskandhaviśāradaḥ
rathena vā mahābāhuḥ kṣapayan śatruvāhinīm
25. eṣa mahābāhuḥ gajaskandhaviśāradaḥ saṃgrāme
yotsyati vā rathena śatruvāhinīm kṣapayan
25. This mighty-armed warrior, expert in fighting from an elephant's back, will engage in battle, or he will destroy the enemy army with his chariot.
रथ एष महाराज मतो मम नरर्षभः ।
त्वदर्थे त्यक्ष्यति प्राणान्सह सैन्यो महारणे ॥२६॥
26. ratha eṣa mahārāja mato mama nararṣabhaḥ ,
tvadarthe tyakṣyati prāṇānsaha sainyo mahāraṇe.
26. rathaḥ eṣa mahārāja mataḥ mama nararṣabhaḥ
tvadarthe tyakṣyati prāṇān sahasainyaḥ mahāraṇe
26. mahārāja nararṣabha eṣa rathaḥ mama mataḥ saḥ
tvadarthe sahasainyaḥ prāṇān mahāraṇe tyakṣyati
26. O great king, O best among men, this one is considered by me to be a (capable) chariot-warrior. For your sake, he will give up his life along with his soldiers in the great battle.
एष विक्रान्तयोधी च चित्रयोधी च संगरे ।
वीतभीश्चापि ते राजञ्शात्रवैः सह योत्स्यते ॥२७॥
27. eṣa vikrāntayodhī ca citrayodhī ca saṁgare ,
vītabhīścāpi te rājañśātravaiḥ saha yotsyate.
27. eṣa vikrāntayodhī ca citrayodhī ca saṃgare
vītabhīḥ ca api te rājan śātravaiḥ saha yotsyate
27. rājan,
eṣa ca vikrāntayodhī ca citrayodhī saṃgare ca api vītabhīḥ te śātravaiḥ saha yotsyate
27. O king, this one is both a valiant warrior and a warrior of diverse tactics in battle. Moreover, he will fight fearlessly against your enemies.
बाह्लीकोऽतिरथश्चैव समरे चानिवर्तिता ।
मम राजन्मतो युद्धे शूरो वैवस्वतोपमः ॥२८॥
28. bāhlīko'tirathaścaiva samare cānivartitā ,
mama rājanmato yuddhe śūro vaivasvatopamaḥ.
28. bāhlīkaḥ atirathaḥ ca eva samare ca anivartitā
mama rājan mataḥ yuddhe śūraḥ vaivasvatopamaḥ
28. rājan,
bāhlīkaḥ ca eva atirathaḥ ca anivartitā samare mama mataḥ yuddhe śūraḥ vaivasvatopamaḥ
28. Bahlīka is indeed a great warrior (atiratha) and never retreats in battle. O king, he is considered by me to be a hero (śūra) in war, comparable to Yama (Vaivasvata).
न ह्येष समरं प्राप्य निवर्तेत कथंचन ।
यथा सततगो राजन्नाभिहत्य परान्रणे ॥२९॥
29. na hyeṣa samaraṁ prāpya nivarteta kathaṁcana ,
yathā satatago rājannābhihatya parānraṇe.
29. na hi eṣa samaram prāpya nivarteta kathaṃcana
yathā satatagaḥ rājan na abhihatya parān raṇe
29. rājan hi eṣa samaram prāpya kathaṃcana na nivarteta;
yathā satatagaḥ raṇe parān na abhihatya (nivarteta)
29. Indeed, having reached the battlefield, he would never retreat, just as, O King, an elephant constantly on the move would not turn back from battle without striking down its enemies.
सेनापतिर्महाराज सत्यवांस्ते महारथः ।
रणेष्वद्भुतकर्मा च रथः पररथारुजः ॥३०॥
30. senāpatirmahārāja satyavāṁste mahārathaḥ ,
raṇeṣvadbhutakarmā ca rathaḥ pararathārujaḥ.

raṇeṣu adbhutakarmā ca rathaḥ pararathārujaḥ

30. O great King (mahārāja), your general, Satyavān, is a great warrior (mahāratha). His actions in battles are wondrous, and he is a warrior (rathaḥ) who crushes the chariots of his enemies (pararathārujaḥ).
एतस्य समरं दृष्ट्वा न व्यथास्ति कथंचन ।
उत्स्मयन्नभ्युपैत्येष परान्रथपथे स्थितान् ॥३१॥
31. etasya samaraṁ dṛṣṭvā na vyathāsti kathaṁcana ,
utsmayannabhyupaityeṣa parānrathapathe sthitān.

utsmayan abhyupaiti eṣa parān rathapathe sthitān

31. Having witnessed his fighting, there is absolutely no distress. Smiling, he advances upon those enemies who stand in the path of the chariots.
एष चारिषु विक्रान्तः कर्म सत्पुरुषोचितम् ।
कर्ता विमर्दे सुमहत्त्वदर्थे पुरुषोत्तमः ॥३२॥
32. eṣa cāriṣu vikrāntaḥ karma satpuruṣocitam ,
kartā vimarde sumahattvadarthe puruṣottamaḥ.
32. eṣa ca ariṣu vikrāntaḥ karma satpuruṣocitam
kartā vimarde sumahat tvadarthe puruṣottamaḥ
32. ca eṣa ariṣu vikrāntaḥ puruṣottamaḥ tvadarthe
vimarde sumahat satpuruṣocitam karma kartā
32. And this best among men (puruṣottama) is valiant among his foes. He will perform a very great deed, befitting a good person, in the conflict, all for your sake.
अलायुधो राक्षसेन्द्रः क्रूरकर्मा महाबलः ।
हनिष्यति परान्राजन्पूर्ववैरमनुस्मरन् ॥३३॥
33. alāyudho rākṣasendraḥ krūrakarmā mahābalaḥ ,
haniṣyati parānrājanpūrvavairamanusmaran.

haniṣyati parān rājan pūrvavairam anusmaran
33. rājan krūrakarmā mahābalaḥ rākṣasendraḥ

33. O king, Alāyudha, the chief of the rākṣasas, who performs cruel deeds and possesses great strength, will kill our enemies, remembering his past enmity.
एष राक्षससैन्यानां सर्वेषां रथसत्तमः ।
मायावी दृढवैरश्च समरे विचरिष्यति ॥३४॥
34. eṣa rākṣasasainyānāṁ sarveṣāṁ rathasattamaḥ ,
māyāvī dṛḍhavairaśca samare vicariṣyati.
34. eṣaḥ rākṣasasainyānām sarveṣām rathasattamaḥ
māyāvī dṛḍhavairaḥ ca samare vicariṣyati
34. eṣaḥ rākṣasasainyānām sarveṣām rathasattamaḥ

34. This one (Alāyudha) is the foremost charioteer among all the rākṣasa armies. He is endowed with illusion (māyā) and holds firm enmity, and he will move about fiercely in battle.
प्राग्ज्योतिषाधिपो वीरो भगदत्तः प्रतापवान् ।
गजाङ्कुशधरश्रेष्ठो रथे चैव विशारदः ॥३५॥
35. prāgjyotiṣādhipo vīro bhagadattaḥ pratāpavān ,
gajāṅkuśadharaśreṣṭho rathe caiva viśāradaḥ.

35. Bhagadatta, the heroic and mighty lord of Prāgjyotiṣa, is the foremost among those who wield the elephant-goad, and indeed, he is also an expert in chariot warfare.
एतेन युद्धमभवत्पुरा गाण्डीवधन्वनः ।
दिवसान्सुबहून्राजन्नुभयोर्जयगृद्धिनोः ॥३६॥
36. etena yuddhamabhavatpurā gāṇḍīvadhanvanaḥ ,
divasānsubahūnrājannubhayorjayagṛddhinoḥ.
36. etena yuddham abhavat purā gāṇḍīvadhanvanaḥ
divasān subahūn rājan ubhayoḥ jayagṛddhinoḥ
36. rājan purā etena gāṇḍīvadhanvanaḥ ubhayoḥ

36. O king, in the past, a battle took place for many days between him (Bhagadatta) and Arjuna, the wielder of the Gāṇḍīva bow, as both were eager for victory.
ततः सखायं गान्धारे मानयन्पाकशासनम् ।
अकरोत्संविदं तेन पाण्डवेन महात्मना ॥३७॥
37. tataḥ sakhāyaṁ gāndhāre mānayanpākaśāsanam ,
akarotsaṁvidaṁ tena pāṇḍavena mahātmanā.

akarot saṃvidam tena pāṇḍavena mahātmanā
37. tataḥ gāndhāre mānayan sakhāyam pākaśāsanam

37. Then, O son of Gandhari (Dhritarashtra), (Krishna), honoring his friend (Arjuna), who was mighty like Indra, made a pact with that great-souled (Arjuna).
एष योत्स्यति संग्रामे गजस्कन्धविशारदः ।
ऐरावतगतो राजा देवानामिव वासवः ॥३८॥
38. eṣa yotsyati saṁgrāme gajaskandhaviśāradaḥ ,
airāvatagato rājā devānāmiva vāsavaḥ.
38. eṣa yotsyati saṃgrāme gajaskandhaviśāradaḥ
airāvatagataḥ rājā devānām iva vāsavaḥ
38. eṣa saṃgrāme gajaskandhaviśāradaḥ devānām
airāvatagataḥ vāsavaḥ iva rājā yotsyati
38. This one will fight in battle, skilled in riding elephants, just like King Indra, mounted upon Airavata among the gods.
