भीष्म उवाच ।
न रोचते विग्रहो मे पाण्डुपुत्रैः कथंचन ।
यथैव धृतराष्ट्रो मे तथा पाण्डुरसंशयम् ॥१॥
1. bhīṣma uvāca ,
na rocate vigraho me pāṇḍuputraiḥ kathaṁcana ,
yathaiva dhṛtarāṣṭro me tathā pāṇḍurasaṁśayam.

1. Bhishma said: I do not approve of any conflict with the sons of Pandu. Just as Dhritarashtra is to me, so too is Pandu, without a doubt.
गान्धार्याश्च यथा पुत्रास्तथा कुन्तीसुता मताः ।
यथा च मम ते रक्ष्या धृतराष्ट्र तथा तव ॥२॥
2. gāndhāryāśca yathā putrāstathā kuntīsutā matāḥ ,
yathā ca mama te rakṣyā dhṛtarāṣṭra tathā tava.
2. gāndhāryāḥ ca yathā putrāḥ tathā kuntīsutāḥ matāḥ
| yathā ca mama te rakṣyāḥ dhṛtarāṣṭra tathā tava
2. And just as Gandhari's sons are regarded (by me), so too are Kunti's sons. O Dhritarashtra, just as they are to be protected by me, so also are they to be protected by you.
यथा च मम राज्ञश्च तथा दुर्योधनस्य ते ।
तथा कुरूणां सर्वेषामन्येषामपि भारत ॥३॥
3. yathā ca mama rājñaśca tathā duryodhanasya te ,
tathā kurūṇāṁ sarveṣāmanyeṣāmapi bhārata.
3. yathā ca mama rājñaḥ ca tathā duryodhanasya te
| tathā kurūṇām sarveṣām anyeṣām api bhārata
3. And just as they are (to be protected) by me and by the king, so too, Duryodhana, are they by you. Similarly, O Bharata, they are (to be protected) by all the Kurus and by others as well.
एवं गते विग्रहं तैर्न रोचये संधाय वीरैर्दीयतामद्य भूमिः ।
तेषामपीदं प्रपितामहानां राज्यं पितुश्चैव कुरूत्तमानाम् ॥४॥
4. evaṁ gate vigrahaṁ tairna rocaye; saṁdhāya vīrairdīyatāmadya bhūmiḥ ,
teṣāmapīdaṁ prapitāmahānāṁ; rājyaṁ pituścaiva kurūttamānām.
4. evam gate vigraham taiḥ na rocaye
saṃdhāya vīraiḥ dīyatām adya bhūmiḥ
| teṣām api idam prapitāmahānām
rājyam pituḥ ca eva kurūttamānām
4. This being the situation, I do not approve of a conflict with them. Let the land be given to these heroes today after a peaceful settlement (saṃdhi). This kingdom belongs to their great-grandfathers and, indeed, to their father (Pandu), who was among the best of the Kurus.
दुर्योधन यथा राज्यं त्वमिदं तात पश्यसि ।
मम पैतृकमित्येवं तेऽपि पश्यन्ति पाण्डवाः ॥५॥
5. duryodhana yathā rājyaṁ tvamidaṁ tāta paśyasi ,
mama paitṛkamityevaṁ te'pi paśyanti pāṇḍavāḥ.
5. duryodhana yathā rājyam tvam idam tāta paśyasi |
mama paitrikam iti evam te api paśyanti pāṇḍavāḥ
5. O Duryodhana, my son, just as you regard this kingdom as 'mine, inherited from my father,' so too do the Pandavas perceive it.
यदि राज्यं न ते प्राप्ताः पाण्डवेयास्तपस्विनः ।
कुत एव तवापीदं भारतस्य च कस्यचित् ॥६॥
6. yadi rājyaṁ na te prāptāḥ pāṇḍaveyāstapasvinaḥ ,
kuta eva tavāpīdaṁ bhāratasya ca kasyacit.
6. yadi rājyam na te prāptāḥ pāṇḍaveyāḥ tapasvinaḥ
kuta eva tava api idam bhāratasya ca kasyacit
6. If the ascetic (tapasvin) sons of Pāṇḍu did not obtain the kingdom for you, then how could this kingdom ever belong to you, or to anyone else from the Bharata lineage?
अथ धर्मेण राज्यं त्वं प्राप्तवान्भरतर्षभ ।
तेऽपि राज्यमनुप्राप्ताः पूर्वमेवेति मे मतिः ॥७॥
7. atha dharmeṇa rājyaṁ tvaṁ prāptavānbharatarṣabha ,
te'pi rājyamanuprāptāḥ pūrvameveti me matiḥ.
7. atha dharmeṇa rājyam tvam prāptavān bharatarṣabha
te api rājyam anuprāptāḥ pūrvam eva iti me matiḥ
7. O best of the Bharatas, if you have obtained the kingdom through natural law (dharma), then my opinion is that they (the Pāṇḍavas) also obtained the kingdom long ago.
मधुरेणैव राज्यस्य तेषामर्धं प्रदीयताम् ।
एतद्धि पुरुषव्याघ्र हितं सर्वजनस्य च ॥८॥
8. madhureṇaiva rājyasya teṣāmardhaṁ pradīyatām ,
etaddhi puruṣavyāghra hitaṁ sarvajanasya ca.
8. madhureṇa eva rājyasya teṣām ardham pradīyatām
etat hi puruṣavyāghra hitam sarvajanasya ca
8. Therefore, half of the kingdom should be given to them amicably. For this, O tiger among men, is indeed beneficial for all people.
अतोऽन्यथा चेत्क्रियते न हितं नो भविष्यति ।
तवाप्यकीर्तिः सकला भविष्यति न संशयः ॥९॥
9. ato'nyathā cetkriyate na hitaṁ no bhaviṣyati ,
tavāpyakīrtiḥ sakalā bhaviṣyati na saṁśayaḥ.
9. ataḥ anyathā cet kriyate na hitam naḥ bhaviṣyati
tava api akīrtiḥ sakalā bhaviṣyati na saṃśayaḥ
9. If it is done otherwise than this, it will not be beneficial for us. Moreover, complete disgrace will certainly befall you; there is no doubt about it.
कीर्तिरक्षणमातिष्ठ कीर्तिर्हि परमं बलम् ।
नष्टकीर्तेर्मनुष्यस्य जीवितं ह्यफलं स्मृतम् ॥१०॥
10. kīrtirakṣaṇamātiṣṭha kīrtirhi paramaṁ balam ,
naṣṭakīrtermanuṣyasya jīvitaṁ hyaphalaṁ smṛtam.
10. kīrtirakṣaṇam ātiṣṭha kīrtiḥ hi paramam balam
naṣṭakīrteḥ manuṣyasya jīvitam hi aphalam smṛtam
10. Uphold the protection of your reputation, for fame is indeed the supreme strength. The life of a person whose fame is lost is considered to be fruitless.
यावत्कीर्तिर्मनुष्यस्य न प्रणश्यति कौरव ।
तावज्जीवति गान्धारे नष्टकीर्तिस्तु नश्यति ॥११॥
11. yāvatkīrtirmanuṣyasya na praṇaśyati kaurava ,
tāvajjīvati gāndhāre naṣṭakīrtistu naśyati.
11. yāvat kīrtiḥ manuṣyasya na praṇaśyati kaurava
tāvat jīvati gāndhāre naṣṭakīrtiḥ tu naśyati
11. O Kaurava, as long as a man's fame does not perish, he lives. But, O Gandhari, one whose fame is destroyed, perishes.
तमिमं समुपातिष्ठ धर्मं कुरुकुलोचितम् ।
अनुरूपं महाबाहो पूर्वेषामात्मनः कुरु ॥१२॥
12. tamimaṁ samupātiṣṭha dharmaṁ kurukulocitam ,
anurūpaṁ mahābāho pūrveṣāmātmanaḥ kuru.
12. tam imam samupātiṣṭha dharmam kurukulocitam
anurūpam mahābāho pūrveṣām ātmanaḥ kuru
12. O mighty-armed one, uphold this (dharma), this natural law that is appropriate for the Kuru lineage and befitting both your ancestors and your own self (ātman).
दिष्ट्या धरन्ति ते वीरा दिष्ट्या जीवति सा पृथा ।
दिष्ट्या पुरोचनः पापो नसकामोऽत्ययं गतः ॥१३॥
13. diṣṭyā dharanti te vīrā diṣṭyā jīvati sā pṛthā ,
diṣṭyā purocanaḥ pāpo nasakāmo'tyayaṁ gataḥ.
13. diṣṭyā dharanti te vīrāḥ diṣṭyā jīvati sā pṛthā
diṣṭyā purocanaḥ pāpaḥ naṣṭakāmaḥ atyayam gataḥ
13. Fortunately, those heroes are alive, and fortunately, Pritha lives. And fortunately, the wicked Purochana, whose evil intent was thwarted, has met his demise.
तदा प्रभृति गान्धारे न शक्नोम्यभिवीक्षितुम् ।
लोके प्राणभृतां कंचिच्छ्रुत्वा कुन्तीं तथागताम् ॥१४॥
14. tadā prabhṛti gāndhāre na śaknomyabhivīkṣitum ,
loke prāṇabhṛtāṁ kaṁcicchrutvā kuntīṁ tathāgatām.
14. tadā prabhṛti gāndhāre na śaknomi abhivīkṣitum
loke prāṇabhṛtām kaṃcit śrutvā kuntīm tathāgatām
14. O Gandhari, since that time, having heard that Kunti had fared so, I am unable to look upon anyone among the living beings in this world.
न चापि दोषेण तथा लोको वैति पुरोचनम् ।
यथा त्वां पुरुषव्याघ्र लोको दोषेण गच्छति ॥१५॥
15. na cāpi doṣeṇa tathā loko vaiti purocanam ,
yathā tvāṁ puruṣavyāghra loko doṣeṇa gacchati.
15. na ca api doṣeṇa tathā lokaḥ vaiti purocanam
yathā tvām puruṣavyāghra lokaḥ doṣeṇa gacchati
15. Neither does the world regard Purochana with such blame, O tiger among men, as it regards you with blame.
तदिदं जीवितं तेषां तव कल्मषनाशनम् ।
संमन्तव्यं महाराज पाण्डवानां च दर्शनम् ॥१६॥
16. tadidaṁ jīvitaṁ teṣāṁ tava kalmaṣanāśanam ,
saṁmantavyaṁ mahārāja pāṇḍavānāṁ ca darśanam.
16. tat idam jīvitam teṣām tava kalmaṣanāśanam
sammantavyam mahārāja pāṇḍavānām ca darśanam
16. Their very existence, O great king, along with the sight of the Pāṇḍavas, should be regarded by you as the dispeller of your transgressions.
न चापि तेषां वीराणां जीवतां कुरुनन्दन ।
पित्र्योंऽशः शक्य आदातुमपि वज्रभृता स्वयम् ॥१७॥
17. na cāpi teṣāṁ vīrāṇāṁ jīvatāṁ kurunandana ,
pitryoṁ'śaḥ śakya ādātumapi vajrabhṛtā svayam.
17. na ca api teṣām vīrāṇām jīvatām kurunandana
pitryaḥ amśaḥ śakyaḥ ādātum api vajrabhṛtā svayam
17. And indeed, O delight of the Kurus, even Indra, the wielder of the thunderbolt, himself cannot seize the ancestral share of those heroes while they are alive.
ते हि सर्वे स्थिता धर्मे सर्वे चैवैकचेतसः ।
अधर्मेण निरस्ताश्च तुल्ये राज्ये विशेषतः ॥१८॥
18. te hi sarve sthitā dharme sarve caivaikacetasaḥ ,
adharmeṇa nirastāśca tulye rājye viśeṣataḥ.
18. te hi sarve sthitāḥ dharme sarve ca eva ekacetasaḥ
adharmeṇa nirastāḥ ca tulye rājye viśeṣataḥ
18. Indeed, all of them are established in their natural law (dharma), and they are all of one mind. They were expelled through injustice, especially from an equal share of the kingdom.
यदि धर्मस्त्वया कार्यो यदि कार्यं प्रियं च मे ।
क्षेमं च यदि कर्तव्यं तेषामर्धं प्रदीयताम् ॥१९॥
19. yadi dharmastvayā kāryo yadi kāryaṁ priyaṁ ca me ,
kṣemaṁ ca yadi kartavyaṁ teṣāmardhaṁ pradīyatām.
19. yadi dharmaḥ tvayā kāryaḥ yadi kāryam priyam ca me
kṣemam ca yadi kartavyam teṣām ardham pradīyatām
19. If natural law (dharma) is to be upheld by you, if what is dear to me is to be accomplished, and if prosperity is to be brought about, then let half (the kingdom) be given to them.
