वैशंपायन उवाच ।
धृष्टद्युम्नस्तु पाञ्चाल्यः पृष्ठतः कुरुनन्दनौ ।
अन्वगच्छत्तदा यान्तौ भार्गवस्य निवेशनम् ॥१॥
1. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
dhṛṣṭadyumnastu pāñcālyaḥ pṛṣṭhataḥ kurunandanau ,
anvagacchattadā yāntau bhārgavasya niveśanam.

1. Vaiśampāyana said: At that time, Dhṛṣṭadyumna, the Pāñcāla prince, followed the two sons of Kuru from behind as they went to the dwelling of Bhārgava.
सोऽज्ञायमानः पुरुषानवधाय समन्ततः ।
स्वयमारान्निविष्टोऽभूद्भार्गवस्य निवेशने ॥२॥
2. so'jñāyamānaḥ puruṣānavadhāya samantataḥ ,
svayamārānniviṣṭo'bhūdbhārgavasya niveśane.
2. saḥ ajñāyamānaḥ puruṣān avadhāya samantataḥ
svayam ārāt niviṣṭaḥ abhūt bhārgavasya niveśane
2. Unrecognized, and having observed the people (puruṣa) all around, he himself settled nearby in Bhārgava's dwelling.
सायेऽथ भीमस्तु रिपुप्रमाथी जिष्णुर्यमौ चापि महानुभावौ ।
भैक्षं चरित्वा तु युधिष्ठिराय निवेदयां चक्रुरदीनसत्त्वाः ॥३॥
3. sāye'tha bhīmastu ripupramāthī; jiṣṇuryamau cāpi mahānubhāvau ,
bhaikṣaṁ caritvā tu yudhiṣṭhirāya; nivedayāṁ cakruradīnasattvāḥ.
3. sāye atha bhīmaḥ tu ripupramāthī
jiṣṇuḥ yamau ca api mahānubhāvau
bhaikṣam caritvā tu yudhiṣṭhirāya
nivedayām cakruḥ adīnasattvāḥ
3. Then, in the evening, Bhīma, the foe-destroyer, and the victorious, mighty twins (Nakula and Sahadeva), having collected alms, the undaunted ones reported it to Yudhiṣṭhira.
ततस्तु कुन्ती द्रुपदात्मजां तामुवाच काले वचनं वदान्या ।
अतोऽग्रमादाय कुरुष्व भद्रे बलिं च विप्राय च देहि भिक्षाम् ॥४॥
4. tatastu kuntī drupadātmajāṁ tā;muvāca kāle vacanaṁ vadānyā ,
ato'gramādāya kuruṣva bhadre; baliṁ ca viprāya ca dehi bhikṣām.
4. tataḥ tu kuntī drupadātmajām tām
uvāca kāle vacanam vadānyā ataḥ
agram ādāya kuruṣva bhadre
balim ca viprāya ca dehi bhikṣām
4. Then, the generous Kuntī spoke these words to that daughter of Drupada at the appropriate moment: 'Therefore, O noble one, take the first portion and make an offering (bali), and give alms to the Brahmin.'
ये चान्नमिच्छन्ति ददस्व तेभ्यः परिश्रिता ये परितो मनुष्याः ।
ततश्च शेषं प्रविभज्य शीघ्रमर्धं चतुर्णां मम चात्मनश्च ॥५॥
5. ye cānnamicchanti dadasva tebhyaḥ; pariśritā ye parito manuṣyāḥ ,
tataśca śeṣaṁ pravibhajya śīghra;mardhaṁ caturṇāṁ mama cātmanaśca.
5. ye ca annam icchanti dadasva tebhyaḥ
pariśritāḥ ye paritaḥ manuṣyāḥ
tataḥ ca śeṣam pravibhajya śīghram
ardham caturṇām mama ca ātmanaḥ ca
5. And to those who desire food, give it to them, as well as to the surrounding dependent people. Then, quickly dividing the remainder, give one half to the four (brothers), to me, and to yourself (ātman).
अर्धं च भीमाय ददाहि भद्रे य एष मत्तर्षभतुल्यरूपः ।
श्यामो युवा संहननोपपन्न एषो हि वीरो बहुभुक्सदैव ॥६॥
6. ardhaṁ ca bhīmāya dadāhi bhadre; ya eṣa mattarṣabhatulyarūpaḥ ,
śyāmo yuvā saṁhananopapanna; eṣo hi vīro bahubhuksadaiva.
6. ardham ca bhīmāya dadāhi bhadre
yaḥ eṣaḥ mattarṣabhatulyarūpaḥ
śyāmaḥ yuvā saṃhananopapannaḥ
eṣaḥ hi vīraḥ bahubhuk sadā eva
6. And, O virtuous one, give the other half to Bhima, who appears like a maddened bull. He is dark-skinned, young, and endowed with great strength. Indeed, this hero always eats a great deal.
सा हृष्टरूपैव तु राजपुत्री तस्या वचः साध्वविशङ्कमाना ।
यथावदुक्तं प्रचकार साध्वी ते चापि सर्वेऽभ्यवजह्रुरन्नम् ॥७॥
7. sā hṛṣṭarūpaiva tu rājaputrī; tasyā vacaḥ sādhvaviśaṅkamānā ,
yathāvaduktaṁ pracakāra sādhvī; te cāpi sarve'bhyavajahrurannam.
7. sā hṛṣṭarūpā eva tu rājaputrī
tasyāḥ vacaḥ sādhvī aviśaṅkamānā |
yathāvaduktam pracakāra sādhvī
te ca api sarve abhyavajahruḥ annam
7. Indeed, that princess, with a gladdened appearance, and being virtuous, carried out her (Kunti's) words precisely as instructed, without any doubt. And all of them then consumed the food.
कुशैस्तु भूमौ शयनं चकार माद्रीसुतः सहदेवस्तरस्वी ।
यथात्मीयान्यजिनानि सर्वे संस्तीर्य वीराः सुषुपुर्धरण्याम् ॥८॥
8. kuśaistu bhūmau śayanaṁ cakāra; mādrīsutaḥ sahadevastarasvī ,
yathātmīyānyajināni sarve; saṁstīrya vīrāḥ suṣupurdharaṇyām.
8. kuśaiḥ tu bhūmau śayanam cakāra
mādrīsutaḥ sahadevaḥ tarasvī |
yathā ātmīyāni ajināni sarve
saṃstīrya vīrāḥ suṣupuḥ dharaṇyām
8. But Sahadeva, the energetic son of Madri, made a bed on the ground with Kuśa grass. Then, all the heroes, having spread their own deer-skins, slept on the ground.
अगस्त्यशास्तामभितो दिशं तु शिरांसि तेषां कुरुसत्तमानाम् ।
कुन्ती पुरस्तात्तु बभूव तेषां कृष्णा तिरश्चैव बभूव पत्तः ॥९॥
9. agastyaśāstāmabhito diśaṁ tu; śirāṁsi teṣāṁ kurusattamānām ,
kuntī purastāttu babhūva teṣāṁ; kṛṣṇā tiraścaiva babhūva pattaḥ.
9. agastyaśāstām abhitaḥ diśam tu
śirāṃsi teṣām kurusattamānām |
kuntī purastāt tu babhūva teṣām
kṛṣṇā tiras ca eva babhūva pattaḥ
9. But the heads of those best of Kurus were positioned towards the direction indicated by Agastya (the south). Kunti, however, was at their feet, and Krishna (Draupadi) was also obliquely positioned at their feet.
अशेत भूमौ सह पाण्डुपुत्रैः पादोपधानेव कृता कुशेषु ।
न तत्र दुःखं च बभूव तस्या न चावमेने कुरुपुंगवांस्तान् ॥१०॥
10. aśeta bhūmau saha pāṇḍuputraiḥ; pādopadhāneva kṛtā kuśeṣu ,
na tatra duḥkhaṁ ca babhūva tasyā; na cāvamene kurupuṁgavāṁstān.
10. aśeta bhūmau saha pāṇḍuputraiḥ
pādopadhānā iva kṛtā kuśeṣu na
tatra duḥkham ca babhūva tasyāḥ
na ca avamene kurupuṅgavān tān
10. She slept on the ground with the sons of Pāṇḍu, laid upon kuśa grass as if it were a foot-cushion. No sorrow arose for her there, nor did she disrespect those foremost among the Kurus.
ते तत्र शूराः कथयां बभूवुः कथा विचित्राः पृतनाधिकाराः ।
अस्त्राणि दिव्यानि रथांश्च नागान्खड्गान्गदाश्चापि परश्वधांश्च ॥११॥
11. te tatra śūrāḥ kathayāṁ babhūvuḥ; kathā vicitrāḥ pṛtanādhikārāḥ ,
astrāṇi divyāni rathāṁśca nāgā;nkhaḍgāngadāścāpi paraśvadhāṁśca.
11. te tatra śūrāḥ kathāyām babhūvuḥ
kathāḥ vicitrāḥ pṛtanādhikārāḥ
astrāṇi divyāni rathān ca nāgān
khaḍgān gadāḥ ca api paraśvadhān ca
11. Those heroes there engaged in conversation. Their stories were wonderful, concerning military affairs: divine weapons, chariots, elephants, swords, maces, and battle-axes.
तेषां कथास्ताः परिकीर्त्यमानाः पाञ्चालराजस्य सुतस्तदानीम् ।
शुश्राव कृष्णां च तथा निषण्णां ते चापि सर्वे ददृशुर्मनुष्याः ॥१२॥
12. teṣāṁ kathāstāḥ parikīrtyamānāḥ; pāñcālarājasya sutastadānīm ,
śuśrāva kṛṣṇāṁ ca tathā niṣaṇṇāṁ; te cāpi sarve dadṛśurmanuṣyāḥ.
12. teṣām kathāḥ tāḥ parikīrtyamānāḥ
pāñcālarājasya sutaḥ tadānīm
śuśrāva kṛṣṇām ca tathā niṣaṇṇām
te ca api sarve dadṛśuḥ manuṣyāḥ
12. As those stories were being recounted by them, at that time the son of the Pāñcāla king heard and saw Kṛṣṇā (Draupadī) sitting there. And all those men also saw her.
धृष्टद्युम्नो राजपुत्रस्तु सर्वं वृत्तं तेषां कथितं चैव रात्रौ ।
सर्वं राज्ञे द्रुपदायाखिलेन निवेदयिष्यंस्त्वरितो जगाम ॥१३॥
13. dhṛṣṭadyumno rājaputrastu sarvaṁ; vṛttaṁ teṣāṁ kathitaṁ caiva rātrau ,
sarvaṁ rājñe drupadāyākhilena; nivedayiṣyaṁstvarito jagāma.
13. dhṛṣṭadyumnaḥ rājaputraḥ tu sarvam
vṛttam teṣām kathitam ca eva
rātrau sarvam rājñe drupadāya
akhilena nivedayiṣyan tvaritaḥ jagāma
13. Prince Dhṛṣṭadyumna, intending to report in full to King Drupada all the events recounted by them that night, quickly departed.
पाञ्चालराजस्तु विषण्णरूपस्तान्पाण्डवानप्रतिविन्दमानः ।
धृष्टद्युम्नं पर्यपृच्छन्महात्मा क्व सा गता केन नीता च कृष्णा ॥१४॥
14. pāñcālarājastu viṣaṇṇarūpa;stānpāṇḍavānaprativindamānaḥ ,
dhṛṣṭadyumnaṁ paryapṛcchanmahātmā; kva sā gatā kena nītā ca kṛṣṇā.
14. pāñcālarājaḥ tu viṣaṇṇarūpaḥ tān
pāṇḍavān aprativindamānaḥ
dhṛṣṭadyumnam paryapṛcchat mahātmā
kva sā gatā kena nītā ca kṛṣṇā
14. But the great-souled Pāñcāla king, appearing dejected and not recognizing those Pāṇḍavas, questioned Dhṛṣṭadyumna: "Where has Kṛṣṇā (Draupadī) gone? By whom was she taken?"
कच्चिन्न शूद्रेण न हीनजेन वैश्येन वा करदेनोपपन्ना ।
कच्चित्पदं मूर्ध्नि न मे निदिग्धं कच्चिन्माला पतिता न श्मशाने ॥१५॥
15. kaccinna śūdreṇa na hīnajena; vaiśyena vā karadenopapannā ,
kaccitpadaṁ mūrdhni na me nidigdhaṁ; kaccinmālā patitā na śmaśāne.
15. kaccit na śūdreṇa na hīnajena
vaiśyena vā karadena upapannā
kaccit padam mūrdhni na me nidigdham
kaccit mālā patitā na śmaśāne
15. Surely, she was not won by a śūdra, nor by someone of low birth, nor by a vaiśya who merely pays taxes? Surely, no foot has been placed upon my head? Surely, the garland has not fallen into a cremation ground?
कच्चित्सवर्णप्रवरो मनुष्य उद्रिक्तवर्णोऽप्युत वेह कच्चित् ।
कच्चिन्न वामो मम मूर्ध्नि पादः कृष्णाभिमर्शेन कृतोऽद्य पुत्र ॥१६॥
16. kaccitsavarṇapravaro manuṣya; udriktavarṇo'pyuta veha kaccit ,
kaccinna vāmo mama mūrdhni pādaḥ; kṛṣṇābhimarśena kṛto'dya putra.
16. kaccit savarṇapravaraḥ manuṣyaḥ
udriktavarṇaḥ api uta vā iha kaccit
kaccit na vāmaḥ mama mūrdhni
pādaḥ kṛṣṇābhimarśena kṛtaḥ adya putra
16. Surely, was it a man of the highest caste, or perhaps even one of a superior caste, who won her here? My son, surely no left foot has been placed upon my head today as a result of Kṛṣṇā's (Draupadī's) winning?
कच्चिच्च यक्ष्ये परमप्रतीतः संयुज्य पार्थेन नरर्षभेण ।
ब्रवीहि तत्त्वेन महानुभावः कोऽसौ विजेता दुहितुर्ममाद्य ॥१७॥
17. kaccicca yakṣye paramapratītaḥ; saṁyujya pārthena nararṣabheṇa ,
bravīhi tattvena mahānubhāvaḥ; ko'sau vijetā duhiturmamādya.
17. kaccit ca yakṣye paramapratītaḥ
saṃyujya pār­thena nararṣabheṇa
bravīhi tattvena mahānubhāvaḥ
kaḥ asau vijetā duhituḥ mama adya
17. kaccit ca paramapratītaḥ nararṣabheṇa
pār­thena saṃyujya yakṣye
adya mama duhituḥ vijetā asau
kaḥ mahānubhāvaḥ tattvena bravīhi
17. I hope to perform the Vedic ritual (yajña) with great delight, having united with Partha, that best among men. Tell me truly, who is that magnanimous one, the conqueror of my daughter today?
विचित्रवीर्यस्य तु कच्चिदद्य कुरुप्रवीरस्य धरन्ति पुत्राः ।
कच्चित्तु पार्थेन यवीयसाद्य धनुर्गृहीतं निहतं च लक्ष्यम् ॥१८॥
18. vicitravīryasya tu kaccidadya; kurupravīrasya dharanti putrāḥ ,
kaccittu pārthena yavīyasādya; dhanurgṛhītaṁ nihataṁ ca lakṣyam.
18. vicitravīryasya tu kaccit adya
kurupravīrasya dharanti putrāḥ
kaccit tu pārthena yavīyasā adya
dhanuḥ gṛhītam nihatam ca lakṣyam
18. But surely, do the sons of Vichitravīrya, that foremost warrior of the Kurus, still exist today? And surely, was the bow taken and the target struck by the younger Pārtha (Arjuna) today?
