वैशंपायन उवाच ।
ततः प्रज्वलिते शुक्रे शार्ङ्गकास्ते सुदुःखिताः ।
व्यथिताः परमोद्विग्ना नाधिजग्मुः परायणम् ॥१॥
1. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
tataḥ prajvalite śukre śārṅgakāste suduḥkhitāḥ ,
vyathitāḥ paramodvignā nādhijagmuḥ parāyaṇam.

1. Vaiśaṃpāyana said: "Then, when the bright fire (Śukra) blazed up, those Śārṅgakas (Mandapāla's sons) were greatly distressed. Tormented and extremely agitated, they found no refuge."
निशाम्य पुत्रकान्बालान्माता तेषां तपस्विनी ।
जरिता दुःखसंतप्ता विललाप नरेश्वर ॥२॥
2. niśāmya putrakānbālānmātā teṣāṁ tapasvinī ,
jaritā duḥkhasaṁtaptā vilalāpa nareśvara.

2. O King, observing her young sons, their distressed old mother, afflicted by sorrow, lamented.
अयमग्निर्दहन्कक्षमित आयाति भीषणः ।
जगत्संदीपयन्भीमो मम दुःखविवर्धनः ॥३॥
3. ayamagnirdahankakṣamita āyāti bhīṣaṇaḥ ,
jagatsaṁdīpayanbhīmo mama duḥkhavivardhanaḥ.
3. ayam agniḥ dahan kakṣam ita āyāti bhīṣaṇaḥ
jagatsaṃdīpayan bhīmaḥ mama duḥkhavivardhanaḥ
3. This terrible fire, burning the dry grass, comes this way; dreadful, it sets the world ablaze and increases my sorrow.
इमे च मां कर्षयन्ति शिशवो मन्दचेतसः ।
अबर्हाश्चरणैर्हीनाः पूर्वेषां नः परायणम् ।
त्रासयंश्चायमायाति लेलिहानो महीरुहान् ॥४॥
4. ime ca māṁ karṣayanti śiśavo mandacetasaḥ ,
abarhāścaraṇairhīnāḥ pūrveṣāṁ naḥ parāyaṇam ,
trāsayaṁścāyamāyāti lelihāno mahīruhān.
4. ime ca mām karṣayanti śiśavaḥ
mandacetasaḥ abarhāḥ caraṇaiḥ hīnāḥ
pūrveṣām naḥ parāyaṇam trāsayan
ca ayam āyāti lelihānaḥ mahīruhān
4. And these dull-witted, featherless children, devoid of feet, who are our refuge (parāyaṇam) for our ancestors (lineage), distress me. And that (fire) comes terrifyingly, licking the trees.
अशक्तिमत्त्वाच्च सुता न शक्ताः सरणे मम ।
आदाय च न शक्तास्मि पुत्रान्सरितुमन्यतः ॥५॥
5. aśaktimattvācca sutā na śaktāḥ saraṇe mama ,
ādāya ca na śaktāsmi putrānsaritumanyataḥ.
5. aśaktimattvāt ca sutāḥ na śaktāḥ saraṇe mama
ādāya ca na śaktā asmi putrān saritum anyataḥ
5. And because of being powerless, my sons are unable to flee. I am also unable to take my sons and move them elsewhere.
न च त्यक्तुमहं शक्ता हृदयं दूयतीव मे ।
कं नु जह्यामहं पुत्रं कमादाय व्रजाम्यहम् ॥६॥
6. na ca tyaktumahaṁ śaktā hṛdayaṁ dūyatīva me ,
kaṁ nu jahyāmahaṁ putraṁ kamādāya vrajāmyaham.
6. na ca tyaktum aham śaktā hṛdayam dūyatī iva me
kam nu jahyām aham putram kam ādāya vrajāmi aham
6. I am not able to abandon them; my heart feels as if it is grieving. Which son should I give up? Which one should I take with me?
किं नु मे स्यात्कृतं कृत्वा मन्यध्वं पुत्रकाः कथम् ।
चिन्तयाना विमोक्षं वो नाधिगच्छामि किंचन ।
छादयित्वा च वो गात्रैः करिष्ये मरणं सह ॥७॥
7. kiṁ nu me syātkṛtaṁ kṛtvā manyadhvaṁ putrakāḥ katham ,
cintayānā vimokṣaṁ vo nādhigacchāmi kiṁcana ,
chādayitvā ca vo gātraiḥ kariṣye maraṇaṁ saha.
7. kim nu me syāt kṛtam kṛtvā manyadhvam
putrakāḥ katham cintayānā vimokṣam
vaḥ na adhigacchāmi kiñcana chādayitvā
ca vaḥ gātraiḥ kariṣye maraṇam saha
7. What should be done by me, having done what? My dear sons, how do you think? While pondering your liberation (mokṣa), I find no way out at all. I will cover myself with your bodies and die together with you.
जरितारौ कुलं हीदं ज्येष्ठत्वेन प्रतिष्ठितम् ।
सारिसृक्वः प्रजायेत पितॄणां कुलवर्धनः ॥८॥
8. jaritārau kulaṁ hīdaṁ jyeṣṭhatvena pratiṣṭhitam ,
sārisṛkvaḥ prajāyeta pitṝṇāṁ kulavardhanaḥ.
8. jaritārau kulam hi idam jyeṣṭhatvena pratiṣṭhitam
sārisṛkvaḥ prajāyeta pitṝṇām kulavardhanaḥ
8. Oh two Jaritarās, this family (kula) is established by its seniority. Let a Sārisṛkva be born, who will be the enhancer of the family (kula) for our ancestors.
स्तम्बमित्रस्तपः कुर्याद्द्रोणो ब्रह्मविदुत्तमः ।
इत्येवमुक्त्वा प्रययौ पिता वो निर्घृणः पुरा ॥९॥
9. stambamitrastapaḥ kuryāddroṇo brahmaviduttamaḥ ,
ityevamuktvā prayayau pitā vo nirghṛṇaḥ purā.
9. stambamitraḥ tapaḥ kuryāt droṇaḥ brahmavituttamaḥ
iti evam uktvā prayayau pitā vaḥ nirghṛṇaḥ purā
9. Let Stambamitra perform asceticism (tapas), and Droṇa, the best among those who know Brahman (brahman). Having spoken thus, your pitiless father departed long ago.
कमुपादाय शक्येत गन्तुं कस्यापदुत्तमा ।
किं नु कृत्वा कृतं कार्यं भवेदिति च विह्वला ॥१०॥
10. kamupādāya śakyeta gantuṁ kasyāpaduttamā ,
kiṁ nu kṛtvā kṛtaṁ kāryaṁ bhavediti ca vihvalā.
10. kam upādāya śakyeta gantum kasya āpat uttamā
kim nu kṛtvā kṛtam kāryam bhavet iti ca vihvalā
10. Distraught, she thought, 'Whom can I take refuge in to escape? What is the utmost distress? What can I do to achieve the desired outcome?'
नापश्यत्स्वधिया मोक्षं स्वसुतानां तदानलात् ।
एवं ब्रुवन्तीं शार्ङ्गास्ते प्रत्यूचुरथ मातरम् ॥११॥
11. nāpaśyatsvadhiyā mokṣaṁ svasutānāṁ tadānalāt ,
evaṁ bruvantīṁ śārṅgāste pratyūcuratha mātaram.
11. na apaśyat svadhiyā mokṣam svasutānām tadā analāt
evam bruvantīm śārṅgāḥ te pratyūcuḥ atha mātaram
11. At that time, she could not discern, with her own intellect, any escape (mokṣa) for her sons from the fire. Then, as she spoke thus, her Śārṅga children replied to their mother.
स्नेहमुत्सृज्य मातस्त्वं पत यत्र न हव्यवाट् ।
अस्मासु हि विनष्टेषु भवितारः सुतास्तव ।
त्वयि मातर्विनष्टायां न नः स्यात्कुलसंततिः ॥१२॥
12. snehamutsṛjya mātastvaṁ pata yatra na havyavāṭ ,
asmāsu hi vinaṣṭeṣu bhavitāraḥ sutāstava ,
tvayi mātarvinaṣṭāyāṁ na naḥ syātkulasaṁtatiḥ.
12. sneham utsṛjya mātaḥ tvam pata yatra
na havyavāṭ asmāsu hi vinaṣṭeṣu
bhavitāraḥ sutāḥ tava tvayi mātar
vinaṣṭāyām na naḥ syāt kulasantatiḥ
12. O Mother, abandon your affection and fly to a place where there is no fire. For, even if we perish, you will have other sons. But if you, O Mother, are destroyed, our family lineage will cease to exist.
अन्ववेक्ष्यैतदुभयं क्षमं स्याद्यत्कुलस्य नः ।
तद्वै कर्तुं परः कालो मातरेष भवेत्तव ॥१३॥
13. anvavekṣyaitadubhayaṁ kṣamaṁ syādyatkulasya naḥ ,
tadvai kartuṁ paraḥ kālo mātareṣa bhavettava.
13. anvavekṣya etat ubhayam kṣamam syāt yat kulasya naḥ
tat vai kartum paraḥ kālaḥ mātar eṣaḥ bhavet tava
13. Having considered both these aspects, whatever is beneficial for our family, indeed, O Mother, this would be the right time for you to do that.
मा वै कुलविनाशाय स्नेहं कार्षीः सुतेषु नः ।
न हीदं कर्म मोघं स्याल्लोककामस्य नः पितुः ॥१४॥
14. mā vai kulavināśāya snehaṁ kārṣīḥ suteṣu naḥ ,
na hīdaṁ karma moghaṁ syāllokakāmasya naḥ pituḥ.
14. mā vai kulavināśāya sneham kārṣīḥ suteṣu naḥ na
hi idam karma mogham syāt lokakāmasya naḥ pituḥ
14. O mother, do not indeed develop affection (sneha) for our sons that would lead to the destruction of the family (kula). For this action (karma) would certainly not be futile for our father, who desires the higher worlds.
जरितोवाच ।
इदमाखोर्बिलं भूमौ वृक्षस्यास्य समीपतः ।
तदाविशध्वं त्वरिता वह्नेरत्र न वो भयम् ॥१५॥
15. jaritovāca ,
idamākhorbilaṁ bhūmau vṛkṣasyāsya samīpataḥ ,
tadāviśadhvaṁ tvaritā vahneratra na vo bhayam.
15. jaritā uvāca idam ākhoḥ bilam bhūmau vṛkṣasya asya
samīpataḥ tat āviśadhvam tvaritāḥ vahneḥ atra na vaḥ bhayam
15. Jaritā said: 'This is a mouse's burrow in the ground, close to this tree. Therefore, quickly enter it! Here, you will have no fear of the fire.'
ततोऽहं पांसुना छिद्रमपिधास्यामि पुत्रकाः ।
एवं प्रतिकृतं मन्ये ज्वलतः कृष्णवर्त्मनः ॥१६॥
16. tato'haṁ pāṁsunā chidramapidhāsyāmi putrakāḥ ,
evaṁ pratikṛtaṁ manye jvalataḥ kṛṣṇavartmanaḥ.
16. tataḥ aham pāṃsunā chidram apidhāsyāmi putrakāḥ
evam pratikṛtam manye jvalataḥ kṛṣṇavartmanaḥ
16. Then, my sons, I will cover the hole with dust. In this way, I consider the burning fire (kṛṣṇavartman) to be counteracted.
तत एष्याम्यतीतेऽग्नौ विहर्तुं पांसुसंचयम् ।
रोचतामेष वोपायो विमोक्षाय हुताशनात् ॥१७॥
17. tata eṣyāmyatīte'gnau vihartuṁ pāṁsusaṁcayam ,
rocatāmeṣa vopāyo vimokṣāya hutāśanāt.
17. tataḥ eṣyāmi atīte agnau vihartum pāṃsusañcayam
rocatām eṣaḥ vaḥ upāyaḥ vimokṣāya hutāśanāt
17. Then, when the fire has subsided, I will come to scatter the heap of dust. May this method for liberation (mokṣa) from the fire (hutāśana) be acceptable to you.
शार्ङ्गका ऊचुः ।
अबर्हान्मांसभूतान्नः क्रव्यादाखुर्विनाशयेत् ।
पश्यमाना भयमिदं न शक्ष्यामो निषेवितुम् ॥१८॥
18. śārṅgakā ūcuḥ ,
abarhānmāṁsabhūtānnaḥ kravyādākhurvināśayet ,
paśyamānā bhayamidaṁ na śakṣyāmo niṣevitum.
18. śārṅgakāḥ ūcuḥ abarhān māṃsabhūtān naḥ kravyāt ākhuḥ
vināśayet paśyamānāḥ bhayam idam na śakṣyāmaḥ niṣevitum
18. The Śārṅgakas said: 'A flesh-eating (kravyād) rat could destroy us, who are without feathers and are merely flesh. As we perceive this danger, we are unable to use this (burrow).'
कथमग्निर्न नो दह्यात्कथमाखुर्न भक्षयेत् ।
कथं न स्यात्पिता मोघः कथं माता ध्रियेत नः ॥१९॥
19. kathamagnirna no dahyātkathamākhurna bhakṣayet ,
kathaṁ na syātpitā moghaḥ kathaṁ mātā dhriyeta naḥ.
19. katham agniḥ na naḥ dahyāt katham ākhuḥ na bhakṣayet
katham na syāt pitā moghaḥ katham mātā dhriyeta naḥ
19. How could the fire not burn us? How could a mouse not devour us? How could our father not become fruitless? And how could our mother be sustained?
बिल आखोर्विनाशः स्यादग्नेराकाशचारिणाम् ।
अन्ववेक्ष्यैतदुभयं श्रेयान्दाहो न भक्षणम् ॥२०॥
20. bila ākhorvināśaḥ syādagnerākāśacāriṇām ,
anvavekṣyaitadubhayaṁ śreyāndāho na bhakṣaṇam.
20. bila ākhoḥ vināśaḥ syāt agneḥ ākāśa-cāriṇām
anvavekṣya etat ubhayam śreyān dāhaḥ na bhakṣaṇam
20. Remaining in the hole would mean destruction by a mouse. For us, aerial beings, destruction comes from fire. Having carefully considered both of these, burning is preferable to being devoured.
गर्हितं मरणं नः स्यादाखुना खादता बिले ।
शिष्टादिष्टः परित्यागः शरीरस्य हुताशनात् ॥२१॥
21. garhitaṁ maraṇaṁ naḥ syādākhunā khādatā bile ,
śiṣṭādiṣṭaḥ parityāgaḥ śarīrasya hutāśanāt.
21. garhitam maraṇam naḥ syāt ākhunā khādatā bile
śiṣṭādiṣṭaḥ parityāgaḥ śarīrasya hutāśanāt
21. Death for us, if devoured by a mouse in this hole, would be despicable. The abandonment of the body by fire has been prescribed by the wise.
