युधिष्ठिर उवाच ।
सत्स्त्रीणां समुदाचारं सर्वधर्मभृतां वर ।
श्रोतुमिच्छाम्यहं त्वत्तस्तं मे ब्रूहि पितामह ॥१॥
1. yudhiṣṭhira uvāca ,
satstrīṇāṁ samudācāraṁ sarvadharmabhṛtāṁ vara ,
śrotumicchāmyahaṁ tvattastaṁ me brūhi pitāmaha.

1. Yudhiṣṭhira said: 'O best among all upholders of natural law (dharma), O grandfather, I wish to hear from you about the conduct of virtuous women. Please tell me that.'
भीष्म उवाच ।
सर्वज्ञां सर्वधर्मज्ञां देवलोके मनस्विनीम् ।
कैकेयी सुमना नाम शाण्डिलीं पर्यपृच्छत ॥२॥
2. bhīṣma uvāca ,
sarvajñāṁ sarvadharmajñāṁ devaloke manasvinīm ,
kaikeyī sumanā nāma śāṇḍilīṁ paryapṛcchata.

manasvinīm kaikeyī sumanā nāma śāṇḍilīm paryapṛcchata

2. Bhīṣma said: 'Kaikeyī, named Sumanā, questioned Śāṇḍilī, who was all-knowing, conversant with all natural law (dharma), and wise in the celestial world.'
केन वृत्तेन कल्याणि समाचारेण केन वा ।
विधूय सर्वपापानि देवलोकं त्वमागता ॥३॥
3. kena vṛttena kalyāṇi samācāreṇa kena vā ,
vidhūya sarvapāpāni devalokaṁ tvamāgatā.

3. O auspicious one, by what kind of conduct or virtuous practice (dharma) have you reached the divine realm, having cast off all your transgressions?
हुताशनशिखेव त्वं ज्वलमाना स्वतेजसा ।
सुता ताराधिपस्येव प्रभया दिवमागता ॥४॥
4. hutāśanaśikheva tvaṁ jvalamānā svatejasā ,
sutā tārādhipasyeva prabhayā divamāgatā.
4. hutāśanaśikhā iva tvaṃ jvalamānā svatejasā
sutā tārādhipasya iva prabhayā divam āgatā
4. You have reached the heavens, blazing with your own radiance like a flame of the ritual fire (homa), or like the daughter of the moon with her splendor.
अरजांसि च वस्त्राणि धारयन्ती गतक्लमा ।
विमानस्था शुभे भासि सहस्रगुणमोजसा ॥५॥
5. arajāṁsi ca vastrāṇi dhārayantī gataklamā ,
vimānasthā śubhe bhāsi sahasraguṇamojasā.
5. arajāṃsi ca vastrāṇi dhārayantī gataklamā
vimānasthā śubhe bhāsi sahasraguṇam ojasā
5. O auspicious one, wearing spotless garments, free from all weariness, and seated in a celestial chariot, you shine with a thousandfold power and brilliance.
न त्वमल्पेन तपसा दानेन नियमेन वा ।
इमं लोकमनुप्राप्ता तस्मात्तत्त्वं वदस्व मे ॥६॥
6. na tvamalpena tapasā dānena niyamena vā ,
imaṁ lokamanuprāptā tasmāttattvaṁ vadasva me.
6. na tvam alpena tapasā dānena niyamena vā imam
lokam anuprāptā tasmāt tattvam vadasva me
6. You have certainly not attained this realm merely through a small amount of asceticism (tapas), charity (dāna), or discipline. Therefore, please tell me the true nature (tattva) of how you achieved this.
इति पृष्टा सुमनया मधुरं चारुहासिनी ।
शाण्डिली निभृतं वाक्यं सुमनामिदमब्रवीत् ॥७॥
7. iti pṛṣṭā sumanayā madhuraṁ cāruhāsinī ,
śāṇḍilī nibhṛtaṁ vākyaṁ sumanāmidamabravīt.
7. iti pṛṣṭā sumanayā madhuram cāruhāsinī
śāṇḍilī nibhṛtam vākyam sumanām idam abravīt
7. sumanayā pṛṣṭā cāruhāsinī śāṇḍilī iti
madhuram nibhṛtam idam vākyam sumanām abravīt
7. Thus questioned by Sumana, Śāṇḍilī, with a sweet and charming smile, softly uttered these words to Sumana.
नाहं काषायवसना नापि वल्कलधारिणी ।
न च मुण्डा न जटिला भूत्वा देवत्वमागता ॥८॥
8. nāhaṁ kāṣāyavasanā nāpi valkaladhāriṇī ,
na ca muṇḍā na jaṭilā bhūtvā devatvamāgatā.
8. na aham kāṣāyavasanā na api valkaladhāriṇī
na ca muṇḍā na jaṭilā bhūtvā devatvam āgatā
8. aham kāṣāyavasanā na,
valkaladhāriṇī api na,
muṇḍā ca na,
jaṭilā na,
bhūtvā devatvam na āgatā
8. I did not attain divinity by becoming one who wears saffron robes, nor by wearing bark garments, nor by becoming shaven-headed, nor by becoming matted-haired.
अहितानि च वाक्यानि सर्वाणि परुषाणि च ।
अप्रमत्ता च भर्तारं कदाचिन्नाहमब्रुवम् ॥९॥
9. ahitāni ca vākyāni sarvāṇi paruṣāṇi ca ,
apramattā ca bhartāraṁ kadācinnāhamabruvam.
9. ahitāni ca vākyāni sarvāṇi paruṣāṇi ca
apramattā ca bhartāram kadācit na aham abruvam
9. aham apramattā ca kadācit bhartāram ahitāni
ca sarvāṇi paruṣāṇi ca vākyāni na abruvam
9. And I never spoke any harmful or harsh words to my husband, always remaining vigilant.
देवतानां पितॄणां च ब्राह्मणानां च पूजने ।
अप्रमत्ता सदायुक्ता श्वश्रूश्वशुरवर्तिनी ॥१०॥
10. devatānāṁ pitṝṇāṁ ca brāhmaṇānāṁ ca pūjane ,
apramattā sadāyuktā śvaśrūśvaśuravartinī.
10. devatānām pitṝṇām ca brāhmaṇānām ca pūjane
apramattā sadāyuktā śvaśrūśvaśuravartinī
10. devatānām ca pitṝṇām ca brāhmaṇānām pūjane apramattā sadāyuktā,
śvaśrūśvaśuravartinī (aham asmi)
10. Always vigilant and dedicated to the veneration of deities, ancestors, and Brahmins, I also respectfully attended to my mother-in-law and father-in-law.
पैशुन्ये न प्रवर्तामि न ममैतन्मनोगतम् ।
अद्वारे न च तिष्ठामि चिरं न कथयामि च ॥११॥
11. paiśunye na pravartāmi na mamaitanmanogatam ,
advāre na ca tiṣṭhāmi ciraṁ na kathayāmi ca.
11. paiśunye na pravartāmi na mama etat manaḥgatam
| advāre na ca tiṣṭhāmi ciram na kathayāmi ca
11. paiśunye na pravartāmi etat mama manaḥgatam na
advāre ca na tiṣṭhāmi ciram ca na kathayāmi
11. I do not engage in malicious gossip, nor is such a thought ever in my mind. I do not stand in places where I should not, nor do I speak for extended periods.
असद्वा हसितं किंचिदहितं वापि कर्मणा ।
रहस्यमरहस्यं वा न प्रवर्तामि सर्वथा ॥१२॥
12. asadvā hasitaṁ kiṁcidahitaṁ vāpi karmaṇā ,
rahasyamarahasyaṁ vā na pravartāmi sarvathā.
12. asat vā hasitam kiñcit ahitam vā api karmaṇā
| rahasyam arahasyam vā na pravartāmi sarvathā
12. kiñcit asat hasitam vā ahitam karmaṇā vā api
rahasyam arahasyam vā sarvathā na pravartāmi
12. I never engage in any kind of improper laughter, nor in any harmful act (karmaṇā), whether it is secret or public.
कार्यार्थे निर्गतं चापि भर्तारं गृहमागतम् ।
आसनेनोपसंयोज्य पूजयामि समाहिता ॥१३॥
13. kāryārthe nirgataṁ cāpi bhartāraṁ gṛhamāgatam ,
āsanenopasaṁyojya pūjayāmi samāhitā.
13. kāryārthe nirgatam ca api bhartāram gṛham
āgatam | āsanena upasaṃyojya pūjayāmi samāhitā
13. kāryārthe nirgatam gṛham āgatam bhartāram
āsanena upasaṃyojya samāhitā pūjayāmi
13. When my husband, having departed for a task, returns home, I attentively offer him a seat and show him respect.
यद्यच्च नाभिजानाति यद्भोज्यं नाभिनन्दति ।
भक्ष्यं वाप्यथ वा लेह्यं तत्सर्वं वर्जयाम्यहम् ॥१४॥
14. yadyacca nābhijānāti yadbhojyaṁ nābhinandati ,
bhakṣyaṁ vāpyatha vā lehyaṁ tatsarvaṁ varjayāmyaham.
14. yadyat ca na abhijānāti yat bhojyam na abhinandati |
bhakṣyam vā api atha vā lehyam tat sarvam varjayāmi aham
14. yadyat ca na abhijānāti,
yat bhojyam na abhinandati,
bhakṣyam vā api atha vā lehyam,
tat sarvam varjayāmi
14. Whatever he does not like or is unfamiliar with, whether it is solid food (bhakṣya) or something to be licked (lehya), I completely avoid all of that.
कुटुम्बार्थे समानीतं यत्किंचित्कार्यमेव तु ।
प्रातरुत्थाय तत्सर्वं कारयामि करोमि च ॥१५॥
15. kuṭumbārthe samānītaṁ yatkiṁcitkāryameva tu ,
prātarutthāya tatsarvaṁ kārayāmi karomi ca.
15. kuṭumbārthe samānītam yatkiñcit kāryam eva tu
prātaḥ utthāya tat sarvam kārayāmi karomi ca
15. aham prātaḥ utthāya kuṭumbārthe yatkiñcit samānītam
kāryam eva tu tat sarvam kārayāmi ca karomi
15. Whatever small amount of work is gathered for the family, I rise early in the morning and ensure all of it is done, and I also do it myself.
प्रवासं यदि मे भर्ता याति कार्येण केनचित् ।
मङ्गलैर्बहुभिर्युक्ता भवामि नियता सदा ॥१६॥
16. pravāsaṁ yadi me bhartā yāti kāryeṇa kenacit ,
maṅgalairbahubhiryuktā bhavāmi niyatā sadā.
16. pravāsam yadi me bhartā yāti kāryeṇa kenacit
maṅgalaiḥ bahubhiḥ yuktā bhavāmi niyatā sadā
16. yadi me bhartā kenacit kāryeṇa pravāsam yāti aham
maṅgalaiḥ bahubhiḥ yuktā niyatā sadā bhavāmi
16. If my husband travels to a foreign land for some business, I always remain engaged in many auspicious activities and am self-controlled.
अञ्जनं रोचनां चैव स्नानं माल्यानुलेपनम् ।
प्रसाधनं च निष्क्रान्ते नाभिनन्दामि भर्तरि ॥१७॥
17. añjanaṁ rocanāṁ caiva snānaṁ mālyānulepanam ,
prasādhanaṁ ca niṣkrānte nābhinandāmi bhartari.
17. añjanam rocanām ca eva snānam mālyānulepanam
prasādhanam ca niṣkrānte na abhinandāmi bhartari
17. bhartari niṣkrānte aham añjanam rocanām ca eva
snānam mālyānulepanam ca prasādhanam na abhinandāmi
17. When my husband is away, I do not delight in applying collyrium or rocana pigment, nor in bathing, adorning myself with garlands and unguents, or any other embellishment.
नोत्थापयामि भर्तारं सुखसुप्तमहं सदा ।
आतुरेष्वपि कार्येषु तेन तुष्यति मे मनः ॥१८॥
18. notthāpayāmi bhartāraṁ sukhasuptamahaṁ sadā ,
ātureṣvapi kāryeṣu tena tuṣyati me manaḥ.
18. na utthāpayāmi bhartāram sukhasuptam aham sadā
ātureṣu api kāryeṣu tena tuṣyati me manaḥ
18. aham sadā sukhasuptam bhartāram ātureṣu kāryeṣu
api na utthāpayāmi tena me manaḥ tuṣyati
18. I never awaken my husband when he is comfortably sleeping, not even for urgent matters. My mind is always content with this behavior.
नायासयामि भर्तारं कुटुम्बार्थे च सर्वदा ।
गुप्तगुह्या सदा चास्मि सुसंमृष्टनिवेशना ॥१९॥
19. nāyāsayāmi bhartāraṁ kuṭumbārthe ca sarvadā ,
guptaguhyā sadā cāsmi susaṁmṛṣṭaniveśanā.
19. na āyāsayāmi bhartāram kuṭumbārthe ca sarvadā
guptaguhyā sadā ca asmi susaṃmṛṣṭaniveśanā
19. I never burden my husband for the family's needs, and I always keep secrets well. My home is always meticulously clean.
इमं धर्मपथं नारी पालयन्ती समाहिता ।
अरुन्धतीव नारीणां स्वर्गलोके महीयते ॥२०॥
20. imaṁ dharmapathaṁ nārī pālayantī samāhitā ,
arundhatīva nārīṇāṁ svargaloke mahīyate.
20. imam dharmapatham nārī pālayantī samāhitā
arundhatī iva nārīṇām svargaloke mahīyate
20. A woman who, with focused attention, observes this path of righteousness (dharma) is glorified in the celestial realm (svargaloka) among women, just like Arundhati.
भीष्म उवाच ।
एतदाख्याय सा देवी सुमनायै तपस्विनी ।
पतिधर्मं महाभागा जगामादर्शनं तदा ॥२१॥
21. bhīṣma uvāca ,
etadākhyāya sā devī sumanāyai tapasvinī ,
patidharmaṁ mahābhāgā jagāmādarśanaṁ tadā.
21. bhīṣmaḥ uvāca etat ākhyāya sā devī sumanāyai
tapasvinī patidharmam mahābhāgā jagāma adarśanam tadā
21. Bhishma said: After narrating this account, that divine ascetic (tapasvinī), the blessed one, explained the natural law (dharma) concerning a husband to Sumana, and then vanished from sight.
यश्चेदं पाण्डवाख्यानं पठेत्पर्वणि पर्वणि ।
स देवलोकं संप्राप्य नन्दने सुसुखं वसेत् ॥२२॥
22. yaścedaṁ pāṇḍavākhyānaṁ paṭhetparvaṇi parvaṇi ,
sa devalokaṁ saṁprāpya nandane susukhaṁ vaset.
22. yaḥ ca idam pāṇḍavākhyānam paṭhet parvaṇi parvaṇi
sa devalokam saṃprāpya nandane susukham vaset
22. And whoever reads this narrative of the Pāṇḍavas, chapter by chapter, that person, having attained the celestial realm (devaloka), will reside very happily in Nandana (the divine garden).
