वैशंपायन उवाच ।
श्रुत्वा तु नृपतिर्वीरं पितरं बभ्रुवाहनः ।
निर्ययौ विनयेनार्यो ब्राह्मणार्घ्यपुरःसरः ॥१॥
1. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
śrutvā tu nṛpatirvīraṁ pitaraṁ babhruvāhanaḥ ,
niryayau vinayenāryo brāhmaṇārghyapuraḥsaraḥ.

1. Vaiśampāyana said: Babhruvāhana, the noble king, having heard of his heroic father, went out respectfully, preceded by Brahmins carrying offerings.
मणिपूरेश्वरं त्वेवमुपयातं धनंजयः ।
नाभ्यनन्दत मेधावी क्षत्रधर्ममनुस्मरन् ॥२॥
2. maṇipūreśvaraṁ tvevamupayātaṁ dhanaṁjayaḥ ,
nābhyanandata medhāvī kṣatradharmamanusmaran.
2. maṇipūreśvaram tu evam upayātam dhanaṃjayaḥ na
abhyanandata medhāvī kṣatra dharmam anusmaran
2. But Dhanañjaya (Arjuna), sagacious and remembering the duty (dharma) of a warrior, did not welcome the lord of Maṇipūra (Babhruvāhana) who had thus approached.
उवाच चैनं धर्मात्मा समन्युः फल्गुनस्तदा ।
प्रक्रियेयं न ते युक्ता बहिस्त्वं क्षत्रधर्मतः ॥३॥
3. uvāca cainaṁ dharmātmā samanyuḥ phalgunastadā ,
prakriyeyaṁ na te yuktā bahistvaṁ kṣatradharmataḥ.
3. uvāca ca enam dharmātmā samanyuḥ phalgunaḥ tadā
prakriyā iyam na te yuktā bahiḥ tvam kṣatradharmataḥ

3. Then, the righteous (dharmātmā) Arjuna (phalguna), filled with anger, said to him: 'This action of yours is not proper; you are acting outside the natural law (dharma) of a warrior.'
संरक्ष्यमाणं तुरगं यौधिष्ठिरमुपागतम् ।
यज्ञियं विषयान्ते मां नायोत्सीः किं नु पुत्रक ॥४॥
4. saṁrakṣyamāṇaṁ turagaṁ yaudhiṣṭhiramupāgatam ,
yajñiyaṁ viṣayānte māṁ nāyotsīḥ kiṁ nu putraka.
4. saṃrakṣyamāṇam turagam yauhiṣṭhiram upāgatam
yajñiyam viṣayānte mām na ayotsīḥ kim nu putraka
4. putraka kim nu tvam mām na ayotsīḥ yauhiṣṭhiram

4. O son, why then did you not fight me, when Yudhiṣṭhira's horse - which was being protected, designated for the Vedic ritual (yajña), and had arrived at the boundary of your domain - was present?
धिक्त्वामस्तु सुदुर्बुद्धिं क्षत्रधर्माविशारदम् ।
यो मां युद्धाय संप्राप्तं साम्नैवाथो त्वमग्रहीः ॥५॥
5. dhiktvāmastu sudurbuddhiṁ kṣatradharmāviśāradam ,
yo māṁ yuddhāya saṁprāptaṁ sāmnaivātho tvamagrahīḥ.
5. dhik tvām astu sudurbuddhim kṣatradharmāviśāradam yaḥ
mām yuddhāya saṃprāptam sāmnā eva atha u tvam agraḥīḥ
5. dhik astu tvām sudurbuddhim kṣatradharmāviśāradam yaḥ
tvam mām yuddhāya saṃprāptam sāmnā eva atha u agraḥīḥ
5. Shame on you, O exceedingly foolish one, ignorant of the warrior's natural law (dharma)! You, who apprehended me with mere conciliation when I had arrived for battle.
न त्वया पुरुषार्थश्च कश्चिदस्तीह जीवता ।
यस्त्वं स्त्रीवद्युधा प्राप्तं साम्ना मां प्रत्यगृह्णथाः ॥६॥
6. na tvayā puruṣārthaśca kaścidastīha jīvatā ,
yastvaṁ strīvadyudhā prāptaṁ sāmnā māṁ pratyagṛhṇathāḥ.
6. na tvayā puruṣārthaḥ ca kaścit asti iha jīvatā yaḥ
tvam strīvat yudhā prāptam sāmnā mām pratyagṛhṇathāḥ
6. iha jīvatā tvayā kaścit puruṣārthaḥ ca na asti yaḥ
tvam yudhā prāptam mām sāmnā strīvat pratyagṛhṇathāḥ
6. While you are alive, there is no manly purpose (puruṣārtha) for you here, since you received me - who had come for battle - with conciliation, like a woman.
यद्यहं न्यस्तशस्त्रस्त्वामागच्छेयं सुदुर्मते ।
प्रक्रियेयं ततो युक्ता भवेत्तव नराधम ॥७॥
7. yadyahaṁ nyastaśastrastvāmāgaccheyaṁ sudurmate ,
prakriyeyaṁ tato yuktā bhavettava narādhama.
7. yadi aham nyastaśastraḥ tvām āgaccheyam sudurmate
prakriyā iyam tataḥ yuktā bhavet tava narādhama
7. yadi aham nyastaśastraḥ tvām āgaccheyam,
sudurmate,
narādhama,
tataḥ iyam prakriyā tava yuktā bhavet
7. O extremely wicked one! If I were to approach you having laid down my weapons, then this action of yours, O lowest of men, would be appropriate.
तमेवमुक्तं भर्त्रा तु विदित्वा पन्नगात्मजा ।
अमृष्यमाणा भित्त्वोर्वीमुलूपी तमुपागमत् ॥८॥
8. tamevamuktaṁ bhartrā tu viditvā pannagātmajā ,
amṛṣyamāṇā bhittvorvīmulūpī tamupāgamat.

amṛṣyamāṇā bhittvā urvīm ulūpī tam upāgamat
8. bhartrā tu evam uktam tam viditvā,

8. Ulūpī, the daughter of the nāga (pannagātmajā), understanding that he had been spoken to in this manner by her husband, and unable to tolerate it, split the earth and approached him.
सा ददर्श ततः पुत्रं विमृशन्तमधोमुखम् ।
संतर्ज्यमानमसकृद्भर्त्रा युद्धार्थिना विभो ॥९॥
9. sā dadarśa tataḥ putraṁ vimṛśantamadhomukham ,
saṁtarjyamānamasakṛdbhartrā yuddhārthinā vibho.
9. sā dadarśa tataḥ putram vimṛśantam adhomukham
santarjyamānam asakṛt bhartrā yuddhārthinā vibho
9. vibho,
sā tataḥ bhartrā yuddhārthinā asakṛt santarjyamānam adhomukham vimṛśantam putram dadarśa
9. O Lord (vibho)! She then saw her son, who was contemplating with his face cast downwards, being repeatedly reproached by her husband, who was eager for battle.
ततः सा चारुसर्वाङ्गी तमुपेत्योरगात्मजा ।
उलूपी प्राह वचनं क्षत्रधर्मविशारदा ॥१०॥
10. tataḥ sā cārusarvāṅgī tamupetyoragātmajā ,
ulūpī prāha vacanaṁ kṣatradharmaviśāradā.
10. tataḥ sā cārusarvāṅgī tam upetya uragātmajā
ulūpī prāha vacanam kṣatradharmaviśāradā
10. tataḥ sā cārusarvāṅgī uragātmajā ulūpī
kṣatradharmaviśāradā tam upetya vacanam prāha
10. Then, she, Ulūpī, the beautiful-limbed daughter of the serpent (uragātmajā), who was an expert in the natural law of warriors (kṣatradharma), approached him and spoke these words.
उलूपीं मां निबोध त्वं मातरं पन्नगात्मजाम् ।
कुरुष्व वचनं पुत्र धर्मस्ते भविता परः ॥११॥
11. ulūpīṁ māṁ nibodha tvaṁ mātaraṁ pannagātmajām ,
kuruṣva vacanaṁ putra dharmaste bhavitā paraḥ.
11. ulūpīm mām nibodha tvam mātaram pannagātmajām
kuruṣva vacanam putra dharmaḥ te bhavitā paraḥ
11. Son, know me, Ulupi, your mother, the daughter of the serpents. Obey my instruction; your righteousness (dharma) will be paramount.
युध्यस्वैनं कुरुश्रेष्ठं धनंजयमरिंदम ।
एवमेष हि ते प्रीतो भविष्यति न संशयः ॥१२॥
12. yudhyasvainaṁ kuruśreṣṭhaṁ dhanaṁjayamariṁdama ,
evameṣa hi te prīto bhaviṣyati na saṁśayaḥ.
12. yudhyasva enam kuruśreṣṭham dhanañjayam ariṁdama
evam eṣa hi te prītaḥ bhaviṣyati na saṁśayaḥ
12. Fight him, this best of Kurus, Dhananjaya, the subduer of enemies! In this way, he will indeed be pleased with you, without a doubt.
एवमुद्धर्षितो मात्रा स राजा बभ्रुवाहनः ।
मनश्चक्रे महातेजा युद्धाय भरतर्षभ ॥१३॥
13. evamuddharṣito mātrā sa rājā babhruvāhanaḥ ,
manaścakre mahātejā yuddhāya bharatarṣabha.
13. evam uddharṣitaḥ mātrā sa rājā babhruvāhanaḥ
manaḥ cakre mahātejā yuddhāya bharatarṣabha
13. Thus encouraged by his mother, that greatly powerful king Babhruvahana made up his mind for battle, O best of Bharatas.
संनह्य काञ्चनं वर्म शिरस्त्राणं च भानुमत् ।
तूणीरशतसंबाधमारुरोह महारथम् ॥१४॥
14. saṁnahya kāñcanaṁ varma śirastrāṇaṁ ca bhānumat ,
tūṇīraśatasaṁbādhamāruroha mahāratham.
14. sannahya kāñcanam varma śirastrāṇam ca bhānumat
tūṇīraśatasaṁbādham ārūroha mahāratham
14. Having put on his golden armor and a shining helmet, he ascended his great chariot, which was crowded with hundreds of quivers.
सर्वोपकरणैर्युक्तं युक्तमश्वैर्मनोजवैः ।
सुचक्रोपस्करं धीमान्हेमभाण्डपरिष्कृतम् ॥१५॥
15. sarvopakaraṇairyuktaṁ yuktamaśvairmanojavaiḥ ,
sucakropaskaraṁ dhīmānhemabhāṇḍapariṣkṛtam.
15. sarvopakaraṇaiḥ yuktam yuktam aśvaiḥ manojavaiḥ
sucakropaskaram dhīmān hemabhāṇḍapariṣkṛtam
15. dhīmān sarvopakaraṇaiḥ yuktam aśvaiḥ manojavaiḥ
yuktam sucakropaskaram hemabhāṇḍapariṣkṛtam
15. The wise one had a vehicle equipped with all accessories, harnessed with mind-swift horses, having excellent wheels and apparatus, and adorned with golden vessels.
परमार्चितमुच्छ्रित्य ध्वजं सिंहं हिरण्मयम् ।
प्रययौ पार्थमुद्दिश्य स राजा बभ्रुवाहनः ॥१६॥
16. paramārcitamucchritya dhvajaṁ siṁhaṁ hiraṇmayam ,
prayayau pārthamuddiśya sa rājā babhruvāhanaḥ.
16. paramārcitam ucchritya dhvajam siṁham hiraṇmayam
prayayau pārtham uddiśya sa rājā babhruvāhanaḥ
16. saḥ rājā babhruvāhanaḥ paramārcitam hiraṇmayam
siṁham dhvajam ucchritya pārtham uddiśya prayayau
16. That King Babhruvahana, having hoisted a highly revered, golden lion-emblemed banner, proceeded, aiming for Pārtha (Arjuna).
ततोऽभ्येत्य हयं वीरो यज्ञियं पार्थरक्षितम् ।
ग्राहयामास पुरुषैर्हयशिक्षाविशारदैः ॥१७॥
17. tato'bhyetya hayaṁ vīro yajñiyaṁ pārtharakṣitam ,
grāhayāmāsa puruṣairhayaśikṣāviśāradaiḥ.
17. tataḥ abhyetya hayam vīraḥ yajñiyam pārtharakṣitam
grāhayāmāsa puruṣaiḥ hayaśikṣāviśāradaiḥ
17. tataḥ vīraḥ pārtharakṣitam yajñiyam hayam
abhyetya hayaśikṣāviśāradaiḥ puruṣaiḥ grāhayāmāsa
17. Then the hero (Babhruvahana), having approached the horse that was intended for the (Vedic ritual) yajña and protected by Pārtha (Arjuna), had it seized by men skilled in horse training.
गृहीतं वाजिनं दृष्ट्वा प्रीतात्मा स धनंजयः ।
पुत्रं रथस्थं भूमिष्ठः संन्यवारयदाहवे ॥१८॥
18. gṛhītaṁ vājinaṁ dṛṣṭvā prītātmā sa dhanaṁjayaḥ ,
putraṁ rathasthaṁ bhūmiṣṭhaḥ saṁnyavārayadāhave.
18. gṛhītam vājinam dṛṣṭvā prīta-ātmā sa dhanañjayaḥ
putram rathastham bhūmiṣṭhaḥ samnyavārayat āhave
18. gṛhītam vājinam dṛṣṭvā saḥ prītātmā dhanañjayaḥ
bhūmiṣṭhaḥ rathastham putram āhave samnyavārayat
18. Having seen the horse seized, that joyful Dhananjaya (Arjuna), standing on the ground, restrained his son, who was in the chariot, from battle.
ततः स राजा तं वीरं शरव्रातैः सहस्रशः ।
अर्दयामास निशितैराशीविषविषोपमैः ॥१९॥
19. tataḥ sa rājā taṁ vīraṁ śaravrātaiḥ sahasraśaḥ ,
ardayāmāsa niśitairāśīviṣaviṣopamaiḥ.
19. tataḥ sa rājā tam vīram śaravrātaiḥ sahasraśaḥ
ardayāmāsa niśitaiḥ āśīviṣaviṣopamaiḥ
19. Then that king tormented that hero with thousands of sharp arrows, which were comparable to the venom of venomous snakes.
तयोः समभवद्युद्धं पितुः पुत्रस्य चातुलम् ।
देवासुररणप्रख्यमुभयोः प्रीयमाणयोः ॥२०॥
20. tayoḥ samabhavadyuddhaṁ pituḥ putrasya cātulam ,
devāsuraraṇaprakhyamubhayoḥ prīyamāṇayoḥ.
20. tayoḥ samabhavat yuddham pituḥ putrasya ca
atulam devāsuraraṇaprakhyam ubhayoḥ prīyamāṇayoḥ
20. An unparalleled battle (yuddha) took place between the father and the son. It resembled the conflict between the gods and asuras, with both of them delighting in the fight.
किरीटिनं तु विव्याध शरेण नतपर्वणा ।
जत्रुदेशे नरव्याघ्रः प्रहसन्बभ्रुवाहनः ॥२१॥
21. kirīṭinaṁ tu vivyādha śareṇa nataparvaṇā ,
jatrudeśe naravyāghraḥ prahasanbabhruvāhanaḥ.
21. kirīṭinam tu vivyādha śareṇa nataparvaṇā
jatrudeśe naravyāghraḥ prahasan babruvāhanaḥ
21. Babhruvāhana, a tiger among men, smiling, pierced the crowned one (Arjuna) in the collarbone region with a bent-jointed arrow.
सोऽभ्यगात्सह पुङ्खेन वल्मीकमिव पन्नगः ।
विनिर्भिद्य च कौन्तेयं महीतलमथाविशत् ॥२२॥
22. so'bhyagātsaha puṅkhena valmīkamiva pannagaḥ ,
vinirbhidya ca kaunteyaṁ mahītalamathāviśat.
22. saḥ abhyagāt saha puṅkhena valmīkam iva pannagaḥ
vinirbhidya ca kaunteyam mahītalam atha āviśat
22. That arrow, having completely pierced Kaunteya (Arjuna), then entered the surface of the earth (mahītala) with its fletching, just as a snake enters an anthill.
स गाढवेदनो धीमानालम्ब्य धनुरुत्तमम् ।
दिव्यं तेजः समाविश्य प्रमीत इव संबभौ ॥२३॥
23. sa gāḍhavedano dhīmānālambya dhanuruttamam ,
divyaṁ tejaḥ samāviśya pramīta iva saṁbabhau.
23. saḥ gāḍhavedanaḥ dhīmān ālambya dhanuḥ uttamam
divyam tejaḥ samāviśya pramīta iva saṃbabhau
23. dhīmān saḥ gāḍhavedanaḥ uttamam dhanuḥ ālambya
divyam tejaḥ samāviśya pramīta iva saṃbabhau
23. Deeply pained, the wise hero, leaning upon his excellent bow and imbued with a divine radiance, appeared as if dead.
स संज्ञामुपलभ्याथ प्रशस्य पुरुषर्षभः ।
पुत्रं शक्रात्मजो वाक्यमिदमाह महीपते ॥२४॥
24. sa saṁjñāmupalabhyātha praśasya puruṣarṣabhaḥ ,
putraṁ śakrātmajo vākyamidamāha mahīpate.
24. saḥ saṃjñām upalabhya atha praśasya puruṣarṣabhaḥ
putram śakrāātmajaḥ vākyam idam āha mahīpate
24. mahīpate atha saṃjñām upalabhya saḥ puruṣarṣabhaḥ
śakrāātmajaḥ putram praśasya idam vākyam āha
24. O king, having then regained consciousness, that foremost among men, Arjuna (śakrāātmaja), praised his son and spoke these words.
साधु साधु महाबाहो वत्स चित्राङ्गदात्मज ।
सदृशं कर्म ते दृष्ट्वा प्रीतिमानस्मि पुत्रक ॥२५॥
25. sādhu sādhu mahābāho vatsa citrāṅgadātmaja ,
sadṛśaṁ karma te dṛṣṭvā prītimānasmi putraka.
25. sādhu sādhu mahābāho vatsa citrāṅgadātmaja
sadṛśam karma te dṛṣṭvā prītimān asmi putraka
25. mahābāho vatsa citrāṅgadātmaja putraka sādhu
sādhu te sadṛśam karma dṛṣṭvā asmi prītimān
25. Excellent, excellent, O mighty-armed one, my child, son of Citrāṅgadā! Having witnessed your action (karma), I am greatly pleased, dear son.
विमुञ्चाम्येष बाणांस्ते पुत्र युद्धे स्थिरो भव ।
इत्येवमुक्त्वा नाराचैरभ्यवर्षदमित्रहा ॥२६॥
26. vimuñcāmyeṣa bāṇāṁste putra yuddhe sthiro bhava ,
ityevamuktvā nārācairabhyavarṣadamitrahā.
26. vimuñcāmi eṣa bāṇān te putra yuddhe sthiraḥ bhava
iti evam uktvā nārācaiḥ abhyavarṣat amitrahā
26. putra eṣa te bāṇān vimuñcāmi yuddhe sthiraḥ bhava
iti evam uktvā amitrahā nārācaiḥ abhyavarṣat
26. O son, I unleash these arrows upon you; remain steadfast in battle! Having spoken thus, the destroyer of enemies showered [him] with iron arrows.
तान्स गाण्डीवनिर्मुक्तान्वज्राशनिसमप्रभान् ।
नाराचैरच्छिनद्राजा सर्वानेव त्रिधा त्रिधा ॥२७॥
27. tānsa gāṇḍīvanirmuktānvajrāśanisamaprabhān ,
nārācairacchinadrājā sarvāneva tridhā tridhā.
27. tān gāṇḍīva-nirmuktān vajrāśani-sama-prabhān
nārācaiḥ acchinat rājā sarvān eva tridhā tridhā
27. The king, with his arrows, cut all those arrows - released from the Gāṇḍīva bow and shining like thunderbolts - each into three pieces.
तस्य पार्थः शरैर्दिव्यैर्ध्वजं हेमपरिष्कृतम् ।
सुवर्णतालप्रतिमं क्षुरेणापाहरद्रथात् ॥२८॥
28. tasya pārthaḥ śarairdivyairdhvajaṁ hemapariṣkṛtam ,
suvarṇatālapratimaṁ kṣureṇāpāharadrathāt.
28. tasya pārthaḥ śaraiḥ divyaiḥ dhvajam hema-pariṣkṛtam
suvarṇa-tāla-pratimam kṣureṇa apāharat rathāt
28. Arjuna (Pārtha), using divine arrows, severed from the chariot the king's gold-adorned banner, which resembled a golden palm tree, by means of a razor-sharp arrow.
हयांश्चास्य महाकायान्महावेगपराक्रमान् ।
चकार राज्ञो निर्जीवान्प्रहसन्पाण्डवर्षभः ॥२९॥
29. hayāṁścāsya mahākāyānmahāvegaparākramān ,
cakāra rājño nirjīvānprahasanpāṇḍavarṣabhaḥ.
29. hayān ca asya mahā-kāyān mahā-vega-parākramān
cakāra rājñaḥ nirjīvān prahasan pāṇḍava-ṛṣabhaḥ
29. The chief of the Pāṇḍavas, laughing, rendered lifeless the king's massive horses, which possessed great speed and might.
स रथादवतीर्याशु राजा परमकोपनः ।
पदातिः पितरं कोपाद्योधयामास पाण्डवम् ॥३०॥
30. sa rathādavatīryāśu rājā paramakopanaḥ ,
padātiḥ pitaraṁ kopādyodhayāmāsa pāṇḍavam.
30. saḥ rathāt avatīrya āśu rājā parama-kopanaḥ
padātiḥ pitaram kopāt yodhayāmāsa pāṇḍavam
30. That exceedingly wrathful king quickly dismounted from his chariot and, fighting on foot, angrily engaged the Pāṇḍava, his father.
संप्रीयमाणः पाण्डूनामृषभः पुत्रविक्रमात् ।
नात्यर्थं पीडयामास पुत्रं वज्रधरात्मजः ॥३१॥
31. saṁprīyamāṇaḥ pāṇḍūnāmṛṣabhaḥ putravikramāt ,
nātyarthaṁ pīḍayāmāsa putraṁ vajradharātmajaḥ.
31. saṃprīyamāṇaḥ pāṇḍūnām ṛṣabhaḥ putravikramāt na
atyartham pīḍayāmāsa putram vajradharātmajaḥ
31. vajradharātmajaḥ pāṇḍūnām ṛṣabhaḥ putravikramāt
saṃprīyamāṇaḥ putram atyartham na pīḍayāmāsa
31. Arjuna, the foremost of the Pāṇḍavas and son of Indra, was delighted by his son's valor, and therefore did not excessively torment his son.
स हन्यमानो विमुखं पितरं बभ्रुवाहनः ।
शरैराशीविषाकारैः पुनरेवार्दयद्बली ॥३२॥
32. sa hanyamāno vimukhaṁ pitaraṁ babhruvāhanaḥ ,
śarairāśīviṣākāraiḥ punarevārdayadbalī.
32. saḥ hanyamānaḥ vimukham pitaram babhrūvāhanaḥ
śaraiḥ āśīviṣākāraiḥ punaḥ eva ārdayat balī
32. balī babhrūvāhanaḥ saḥ hanyamānaḥ vimukham
pitaram āśīviṣākāraiḥ śaraiḥ punaḥ eva ārdayat
32. Though being struck, the mighty Babhruvahana, with arrows resembling venomous snakes, again tormented his father who had turned away.
ततः स बाल्यात्पितरं विव्याध हृदि पत्रिणा ।
निशितेन सुपुङ्खेन बलवद्बभ्रुवाहनः ॥३३॥
33. tataḥ sa bālyātpitaraṁ vivyādha hṛdi patriṇā ,
niśitena supuṅkhena balavadbabhruvāhanaḥ.
33. tataḥ saḥ bālyāt pitaram vivyādha hṛdi patriṇā
niśitena supuṅkhena balavat babhrūvāhanaḥ
33. tataḥ balavat babhrūvāhanaḥ saḥ bālyāt niśitena
supuṅkhena patriṇā pitaram hṛdi vivyādha
33. Then, the powerful Babhruvahana, out of youthful impulse, mightily pierced his father in the heart with a sharp, well-feathered arrow.
स बाणस्तेजसा दीप्तो ज्वलन्निव हुताशनः ।
विवेश पाण्डवं राजन्मर्म भित्त्वातिदुःखकृत् ॥३४॥
34. sa bāṇastejasā dīpto jvalanniva hutāśanaḥ ,
viveśa pāṇḍavaṁ rājanmarma bhittvātiduḥkhakṛt.

viveśa pāṇḍavam rājan marma bhittvā atiduḥkhakṛt

34. O King, that arrow, blazing with its power and like a burning fire, having pierced a vital spot, entered the Pāṇḍava (Arjuna), causing him immense pain.
स तेनातिभृशं विद्धः पुत्रेण कुरुनन्दनः ।
महीं जगाम मोहार्तस्ततो राजन्धनंजयः ॥३५॥
35. sa tenātibhṛśaṁ viddhaḥ putreṇa kurunandanaḥ ,
mahīṁ jagāma mohārtastato rājandhanaṁjayaḥ.
35. saḥ tena ati-bhṛśam viddhaḥ putreṇa kurunandanaḥ
mahīm jagāma moha-ārtaḥ tataḥ rājan dhanañjayaḥ
35. saḥ kurunandanaḥ tena putreṇa ati-bhṛśam viddhaḥ
moha-ārtaḥ mahīm jagāma tataḥ rājan dhanañjayaḥ
35. That Kuru warrior (kurunandana), deeply wounded by his son, fell to the ground, afflicted by bewilderment. Then, O King, (it was the turn of) Arjuna (dhanañjaya).
तस्मिन्निपतिते वीरे कौरवाणां धुरंधरे ।
सोऽपि मोहं जगामाशु ततश्चित्राङ्गदासुतः ॥३६॥
36. tasminnipatite vīre kauravāṇāṁ dhuraṁdhare ,
so'pi mohaṁ jagāmāśu tataścitrāṅgadāsutaḥ.
36. tasmin nipatite vīre kauravāṇām dhuraṃdhare
saḥ api moham jagāma āśu tataḥ citrāṅgadāsutaḥ
36. tasmin vīre kauravāṇām dhuraṃdhare nipatite
saḥ api citrāṅgadāsutaḥ tataḥ āśu moham jagāma
36. When that hero, the leader of the Kauravas, had fallen, then Citrāṅgadā's son also swiftly fell into unconsciousness (moha).
व्यायम्य संयुगे राजा दृष्ट्वा च पितरं हतम् ।
पूर्वमेव च बाणौघैर्गाढविद्धोऽर्जुनेन सः ॥३७॥
37. vyāyamya saṁyuge rājā dṛṣṭvā ca pitaraṁ hatam ,
pūrvameva ca bāṇaughairgāḍhaviddho'rjunena saḥ.
37. vyāyamya saṃyuge rājā dṛṣṭvā ca pitaram hatam pūrvam
eva ca bāṇa-oghaiḥ gāḍha-viddhaḥ arjunena saḥ
37. saḥ rājā saṃyuge vyāyamya pitaram hatam ca dṛṣṭvā
ca pūrvam eva arjunena bāṇa-oghaiḥ gāḍha-viddhaḥ
37. That king, having exerted himself in battle and having seen his father slain, was also already deeply wounded by Arjuna with floods of arrows.
भर्तारं निहतं दृष्ट्वा पुत्रं च पतितं भुवि ।
चित्राङ्गदा परित्रस्ता प्रविवेश रणाजिरम् ॥३८॥
38. bhartāraṁ nihataṁ dṛṣṭvā putraṁ ca patitaṁ bhuvi ,
citrāṅgadā paritrastā praviveśa raṇājiram.

citrāṅgadā paritrastā praviveśa raṇa-ajiram

38. Seeing her husband slain and her son fallen on the ground, Citrāṅgadā, utterly terrified, entered the battlefield.
शोकसंतप्तहृदया रुदती सा ततः शुभा ।
मणिपूरपतेर्माता ददर्श निहतं पतिम् ॥३९॥
39. śokasaṁtaptahṛdayā rudatī sā tataḥ śubhā ,
maṇipūrapatermātā dadarśa nihataṁ patim.

39. Then, the beautiful mother of the lord of Maṇipūra, her heart tormented by grief, weeping, saw her slain husband.
