संजय उवाच ।
प्रीतियुक्तं च हृद्यं च मधुराक्षरमेव च ।
कालयुक्तं च चित्रं च स्वतया चाभिभाषितम् ॥१॥

prītiyuktaṁ ca hṛdyaṁ ca madhurākṣarameva ca ,
kālayuktaṁ ca citraṁ ca svatayā cābhibhāṣitam.

1. Sañjaya said: [The speech] was filled with affection, heartwarming, indeed composed of sweet words, and timely, and captivating, and spoken with [his] natural composure.
धर्मराजस्य तद्वाक्यं निशम्य शिनिपुंगवः ।
सात्यकिर्भरतश्रेष्ठ प्रत्युवाच युधिष्ठिरम् ॥२॥
2. dharmarājasya tadvākyaṁ niśamya śinipuṁgavaḥ ,
sātyakirbharataśreṣṭha pratyuvāca yudhiṣṭhiram.
2. dharmarājasya tat vākyam niśamya śinipuṅgavaḥ
sātyakiḥ bharataśreṣṭha pratyuvāca yudhiṣṭhiram
2. he bharataśreṣṭha śinipuṅgavaḥ sātyakiḥ dharmarājasya

2. Having heard those words of the King of Dharma (Yudhiṣṭhira), Sātyaki, the foremost among the Śinis, O best of the Bhāratas, replied to Yudhiṣṭhira.
श्रुतं ते गदतो वाक्यं सर्वमेतन्मयाच्युत ।
न्याययुक्तं च चित्रं च फल्गुनार्थे यशस्करम् ॥३॥
3. śrutaṁ te gadato vākyaṁ sarvametanmayācyuta ,
nyāyayuktaṁ ca citraṁ ca phalgunārthe yaśaskaram.
3. śrutam te gadataḥ vākyam sarvam etat mayā acyuta
nyāyayuktam ca citram ca phalguna-arthe yaśaskaram
3. acyuta mayā te gadataḥ sarvam etat vākyam śrutam ca
nyāyayuktam ca citram ca phalguna-arthe yaśaskaram
3. O Acyuta, I have heard all these words spoken by you. They are just, wonderful, and bring glory for Arjuna.
एवंविधे तथा काले मदृशं प्रेक्ष्य संमतम् ।
वक्तुमर्हसि राजेन्द्र यथा पार्थं तथैव माम् ॥४॥
4. evaṁvidhe tathā kāle madṛśaṁ prekṣya saṁmatam ,
vaktumarhasi rājendra yathā pārthaṁ tathaiva mām.
4. evaṃvidhe tathā kāle madṛśam prekṣya saṃmatam
vaktum arhasi rājendra yathā pārtham tathā eva mām
4. rājendra evaṃvidhe tathā kāle madṛśam saṃmatam
prekṣya yathā pārtham tathā eva mām vaktum arhasi
4. O King (rājendra), at such a time and in such a situation, recognizing my similar worthiness, you should speak to me just as you speak to Pārtha.
न मे धनंजयस्यार्थे प्राणा रक्ष्याः कथंचन ।
त्वत्प्रयुक्तः पुनरहं किं न कुर्यां महाहवे ॥५॥
5. na me dhanaṁjayasyārthe prāṇā rakṣyāḥ kathaṁcana ,
tvatprayuktaḥ punarahaṁ kiṁ na kuryāṁ mahāhave.
5. na me dhanañjayasya arthe prāṇāḥ rakṣyāḥ kathaṃcana
tvatprayuktaḥ punaḥ aham kim na kuryām mahāhave
5. kathaṃcana me prāṇāḥ dhanañjayasya arthe na rakṣyāḥ
punaḥ tvatprayuktaḥ aham mahāhave kim na kuryām
5. My very life (prāṇāḥ) should certainly not be preserved for the sake of Dhanañjaya (Arjuna). But what would I not do, impelled by you, in a great battle?
लोकत्रयं योधयेयं सदेवासुरमानुषम् ।
त्वत्प्रयुक्तो नरेन्द्रेह किमुतैतत्सुदुर्बलम् ॥६॥
6. lokatrayaṁ yodhayeyaṁ sadevāsuramānuṣam ,
tvatprayukto narendreha kimutaitatsudurbalam.
6. lokatrayam yodhayeyam sadevasuramānuṣam
tvatprayuktaḥ narendra iha kim uta etat sudurbalam
6. narendra iha tvatprayuktaḥ (aham) sadevasuramānuṣam
lokatrayam yodhayeyam kim uta etat sudurbalam
6. Impelled by you, O King (narendra), I could indeed fight the three worlds (lokāḥ) – including gods, asuras, and humans. How much more easily then this extremely weak (sudurbalam) [force]?
सुयोधनबलं त्वद्य योधयिष्ये समन्ततः ।
विजेष्ये च रणे राजन्सत्यमेतद्ब्रवीमि ते ॥७॥
7. suyodhanabalaṁ tvadya yodhayiṣye samantataḥ ,
vijeṣye ca raṇe rājansatyametadbravīmi te.
7. suyodhanabalam tu adya yodhayiṣye samantataḥ
vijayeṣye ca raṇe rājan satyam etat bravīmi te
7. rājan adya aham suyodhanabalam samantataḥ
yodhayiṣye ca raṇe vijayeṣye etat satyam te bravīmi
7. O King, today I will certainly fight Suyodhana's army on all sides, and I will be victorious in battle. This truth I declare to you.
कुशल्यहं कुशलिनं समासाद्य धनंजयम् ।
हते जयद्रथे राजन्पुनरेष्यामि तेऽन्तिकम् ॥८॥
8. kuśalyahaṁ kuśalinaṁ samāsādya dhanaṁjayam ,
hate jayadrathe rājanpunareṣyāmi te'ntikam.
8. kuśalī aham kuśalinam samāsādya dhanañjayam
hate jayadrathe rājan punaḥ eṣyāmi te antikam
8. rājan aham kuśalī kuśalinam dhanañjayam
samāsādya jayadrathe hate punaḥ te antikam eṣyāmi
8. O King, I am well, having reached the prosperous Dhanañjaya (Arjuna). After Jayadratha is killed, I will return to your presence.
अवश्यं तु मया सर्वं विज्ञाप्यस्त्वं नराधिप ।
वासुदेवस्य यद्वाक्यं फल्गुनस्य च धीमतः ॥९॥
9. avaśyaṁ tu mayā sarvaṁ vijñāpyastvaṁ narādhipa ,
vāsudevasya yadvākyaṁ phalgunasya ca dhīmataḥ.
9. avaśyam tu mayā sarvam vijñāpyaḥ tvam narādhipa
vāsudevasya yat vākyam phalgunasya ca dhīmataḥ
9. tu narādhipa mayā sarvam yat vāsudevasya ca
dhīmataḥ phalgunasya vākyam tvam avaśyam vijñāpyaḥ
9. But O King, you must certainly be informed by me of all the words of Vāsudeva (Krishna) and the wise Phālguna (Arjuna).
दृढं त्वभिपरीतोऽहमर्जुनेन पुनः पुनः ।
मध्ये सर्वस्य सैन्यस्य वासुदेवस्य शृण्वतः ॥१०॥
10. dṛḍhaṁ tvabhiparīto'hamarjunena punaḥ punaḥ ,
madhye sarvasya sainyasya vāsudevasya śṛṇvataḥ.
10. dṛḍham tu abhiparītaḥ aham arjunena punaḥ punaḥ
madhye sarvasya sainyasya vāsudevasya śṛṇvataḥ
10. tu aham dṛḍham arjunena punaḥ punaḥ abhiparītaḥ
sarvasya sainyasya madhye vāsudevasya śṛṇvataḥ
10. Indeed, I have been greatly importuned again and again by Arjuna, in the midst of the entire army, with Vāsudeva (Krishna) listening.
अद्य माधव राजानमप्रमत्तोऽनुपालय ।
आर्यां युद्धे मतिं कृत्वा यावद्धन्मि जयद्रथम् ॥११॥
11. adya mādhava rājānamapramatto'nupālaya ,
āryāṁ yuddhe matiṁ kṛtvā yāvaddhanmi jayadratham.
11. adya mādhava rājānam apramattaḥ anupālaya āryām
yuddhe matim kṛtvā yāvat hanmi jayadratham
11. mādhava adya apramattaḥ rājānam anupālaya yuddhe
āryām matim kṛtvā yāvat jayadratham hanmi
11. Today, O Madhava, vigilantly protect the king. Maintain a noble resolve in battle until I kill Jayadratha.
त्वयि वाहं महाबाहो प्रद्युम्ने वा महारथे ।
नृपं निक्षिप्य गच्छेयं निरपेक्षो जयद्रथम् ॥१२॥
12. tvayi vāhaṁ mahābāho pradyumne vā mahārathe ,
nṛpaṁ nikṣipya gaccheyaṁ nirapekṣo jayadratham.
12. tvayi vā aham mahābāho pradyumne vā mahārathe
nṛpam nikṣipya gaccheyam nirapekṣaḥ jayadratham
12. mahābāho aham nṛpam tvayi vā mahārathe pradyumne
vā nikṣipya nirapekṣaḥ jayadratham gaccheyam
12. O mighty-armed one (Krishna), entrusting the king either to you or to the great charioteer Pradyumna, I would go to Jayadratha without any further concern (for the king's safety).
जानीषे हि रणे द्रोणं रभसं श्रेष्ठसंमतम् ।
प्रतिज्ञा चापि ते नित्यं श्रुता द्रोणस्य माधव ॥१३॥
13. jānīṣe hi raṇe droṇaṁ rabhasaṁ śreṣṭhasaṁmatam ,
pratijñā cāpi te nityaṁ śrutā droṇasya mādhava.
13. jānīṣe hi raṇe droṇam rabhasam śreṣṭhasaṃmatam
pratijñā ca api te nityam śrutā droṇasya mādhava
13. mādhava hi raṇe rabhasam śreṣṭhasaṃmatam droṇam
jānīṣe ca api te nityam droṇasya pratijñā śrutā
13. Indeed, O Madhava, you know Drona in battle, how impetuous and highly esteemed he is. Also, Drona's vow has always been heard by you.
ग्रहणं धर्मराजस्य भारद्वाजोऽनुगृध्यति ।
शक्तश्चापि रणे द्रोणो निगृहीतुं युधिष्ठिरम् ॥१४॥
14. grahaṇaṁ dharmarājasya bhāradvājo'nugṛdhyati ,
śaktaścāpi raṇe droṇo nigṛhītuṁ yudhiṣṭhiram.
14. grahaṇam dharmarājasya bhāradvājaḥ anugṛdhyati
śaktaḥ ca api raṇe droṇaḥ nigṛhītum yudhiṣṭhiram
14. bhāradvājaḥ dharmarājasya grahaṇam anugṛdhyati
ca api droṇaḥ raṇe yudhiṣṭhiram nigṛhītum śaktaḥ
14. Drona, the son of Bharadvaja, desires the capture of Yudhishthira, the king who upholds righteousness (dharma-rāja). And Drona is also capable of capturing Yudhishthira in battle.
एवं त्वयि समाधाय धर्मराजं नरोत्तमम् ।
अहमद्य गमिष्यामि सैन्धवस्य वधाय हि ॥१५॥
15. evaṁ tvayi samādhāya dharmarājaṁ narottamam ,
ahamadya gamiṣyāmi saindhavasya vadhāya hi.
15. evam tvayi samādhāya dharmarājam narottamam
aham adya gamiṣyāmi saindhavasya vadhāya hi
15. evam tvayi dharmarājam narottamam samādhāya,
aham adya saindhavasya vadhāya hi gamiṣyāmi
15. Having thus entrusted the best of men, Dharma-rāja (dharma), to you, I shall indeed go today for the slaying of Saindhava.
जयद्रथमहं हत्वा ध्रुवमेष्यामि माधव ।
धर्मराजं यथा द्रोणो निगृह्णीयाद्रणे बलात् ॥१६॥
16. jayadrathamahaṁ hatvā dhruvameṣyāmi mādhava ,
dharmarājaṁ yathā droṇo nigṛhṇīyādraṇe balāt.
16. jayadratham aham hatvā dhruvam eṣyāmi mādhava
dharmarājam yathā droṇaḥ nigṛhṇīyāt raṇe balāt
16. mādhava,
jayadratham aham hatvā,
dhruvam eṣyāmi.
yathā droṇaḥ raṇe balāt dharmarājam nigṛhṇīyāt
16. Madhava, after slaying Jayadratha, I shall certainly return, lest Droṇa forcibly seize Dharma-rāja (dharma) in battle.
निगृहीते नरश्रेष्ठे भारद्वाजेन माधव ।
सैन्धवस्य वधो न स्यान्ममाप्रीतिस्तथा भवेत् ॥१७॥
17. nigṛhīte naraśreṣṭhe bhāradvājena mādhava ,
saindhavasya vadho na syānmamāprītistathā bhavet.
17. nigṛhīte naraśreṣṭhe bhāradvājena mādhava
saindhavasya vadhaḥ na syāt mama aprītiḥ tathā bhavet
17. mādhava,
(yadi) naraśreṣṭhe bhāradvājena nigṛhīte,
saindhavasya vadhaḥ na syāt,
tathā mama aprītiḥ bhavet
17. O Madhava, if the best of men (Yudhiṣṭhira) were to be captured by Bhāradvāja (Droṇa), then Saindhava's slaying would not take place, and I would experience such great displeasure (aprīti).
एवं गते नरश्रेष्ठ पाण्डवे सत्यवादिनि ।
अस्माकं गमनं व्यक्तं वनं प्रति भवेत्पुनः ॥१८॥
18. evaṁ gate naraśreṣṭha pāṇḍave satyavādini ,
asmākaṁ gamanaṁ vyaktaṁ vanaṁ prati bhavetpunaḥ.
18. evam gate naraśreṣṭha pāṇḍave satyavādini
asmākam gamanam vyaktam vanam prati bhavet punaḥ
18. naraśreṣṭha,
evam gate satyavādini pāṇḍave,
asmākam vyaktam vanam prati gamanam punaḥ bhavet
18. O best of men, if it happens thus - the truthful Pāṇḍava (Yudhiṣṭhira) being in such a state (captured) - then our clear return to the forest would certainly occur again.
सोऽयं मम जयो व्यक्तं व्यर्थ एव भविष्यति ।
यदि द्रोणो रणे क्रुद्धो निगृह्णीयाद्युधिष्ठिरम् ॥१९॥
19. so'yaṁ mama jayo vyaktaṁ vyartha eva bhaviṣyati ,
yadi droṇo raṇe kruddho nigṛhṇīyādyudhiṣṭhiram.
19. saḥ ayam mama jayaḥ vyaktam vyarthaḥ eva bhaviṣyati
yadi droṇaḥ raṇe kruddhaḥ nigṛhṇīyāt yudhiṣṭhiram
19. yadi droṇaḥ raṇe kruddhaḥ yudhiṣṭhiram nigṛhṇīyāt,
saḥ ayam mama jayaḥ vyaktam eva vyarthaḥ bhaviṣyati
19. This victory of mine will clearly be in vain if Drona, enraged in battle, were to capture Yudhishthira.
स त्वमद्य महाबाहो प्रियार्थं मम माधव ।
जयार्थं च यशोर्थं च रक्ष राजानमाहवे ॥२०॥
20. sa tvamadya mahābāho priyārthaṁ mama mādhava ,
jayārthaṁ ca yaśorthaṁ ca rakṣa rājānamāhave.
20. saḥ tvam adya mahābāho priyārtham mama mādhava
jayārtham ca yaśortham ca rakṣa rājānam āhave
20. mahābāho mādhava,
saḥ tvam adya mama priyārtham,
jayārtham ca yaśortham ca āhave rājānam rakṣa
20. O mighty-armed Madhava, for my sake, and for the sake of victory and fame, you should protect the king in battle today.
स भवान्मयि निक्षेपो निक्षिप्तः सव्यसाचिना ।
भारद्वाजाद्भयं नित्यं पश्यमानेन ते प्रभो ॥२१॥
21. sa bhavānmayi nikṣepo nikṣiptaḥ savyasācinā ,
bhāradvājādbhayaṁ nityaṁ paśyamānena te prabho.
21. saḥ bhavān mayi nikṣepaḥ nikṣiptaḥ savyasācinā
bhāradvājāt bhayam nityam paśyamānena te prabho
21. prabho,
savyasācinā,
bhāradvājāt nityam bhayam paśyamānena,
te bhavān mayi nikṣepaḥ nikṣiptaḥ
21. O Lord, you yourself have been entrusted to me as a deposit by Savyasacin (Arjuna), who constantly perceives fear from Drona (Bhāradvāja) for you.
तस्यापि च महाबाहो नित्यं पश्यति संयुगे ।
नान्यं हि प्रतियोद्धारं रौक्मिणेयादृते प्रभो ।
मां वापि मन्यते युद्धे भारद्वाजस्य धीमतः ॥२२॥
22. tasyāpi ca mahābāho nityaṁ paśyati saṁyuge ,
nānyaṁ hi pratiyoddhāraṁ raukmiṇeyādṛte prabho ,
māṁ vāpi manyate yuddhe bhāradvājasya dhīmataḥ.
22. tasya api ca mahābāho nityam paśyati
saṃyuge na anyam hi pratiyoddhāram
raukmiṇeyāt ṛte prabho mām vā api
manyate yuddhe bhāradvājasya dhīmataḥ
22. mahābāho prabho,
tasya dhīmataḥ bhāradvājasya api ca nityam saṃyuge yuddhe रौक्मिणेयात् ऋते अन्यम् प्रतियोद्धारम् माम् वा अपि न हि मन्यते [इति] पश्यति
22. O mighty-armed Lord, Arjuna constantly perceives in battle that the intelligent Drona (Bhāradvāja) considers no other opponent his equal, except for Pradyumna (Raukmiṇeya) or even myself.
सोऽहं संभावनां चैतामाचार्यवचनं च तत् ।
पृष्ठतो नोत्सहे कर्तुं त्वां वा त्यक्तुं महीपते ॥२३॥
23. so'haṁ saṁbhāvanāṁ caitāmācāryavacanaṁ ca tat ,
pṛṣṭhato notsahe kartuṁ tvāṁ vā tyaktuṁ mahīpate.
23. saḥ aham saṃbhāvanām ca etām ācāryavacanam ca tat
pṛṣṭhataḥ na utsahe kartum tvām vā tyaktum mahīpate
23. mahīpate saḥ aham etām saṃbhāvanām ca tat ācāryavacanam
ca pṛṣṭhataḥ kartum na utsahe vā tvām tyaktum
23. O King, I am unable to disregard this consideration (of your victory) and that command of the preceptor (guru), nor can I abandon you.
आचार्यो लघुहस्तत्वादभेद्यकवचावृतः ।
उपलभ्य रणे क्रीडेद्यथा शकुनिना शिशुः ॥२४॥
24. ācāryo laghuhastatvādabhedyakavacāvṛtaḥ ,
upalabhya raṇe krīḍedyathā śakuninā śiśuḥ.
24. ācāryaḥ laghuhastatvāt abhedyakavacāvṛtaḥ
upalabhya raṇe krīḍet yathā śakuninā śiśuḥ
24. ācāryaḥ laghuhastatvāt abhedyakavacāvṛtaḥ
upalabhya raṇe krīḍet yathā śakuninā śiśuḥ
24. The preceptor (guru), due to his lightness of hand and being protected by impenetrable armor, would play in battle just as a child plays with a bird.
यदि कार्ष्णिर्धनुष्पाणिरिह स्यान्मकरध्वजः ।
तस्मै त्वां विसृजेयं वै स त्वां रक्षेद्यथार्जुनः ॥२५॥
25. yadi kārṣṇirdhanuṣpāṇiriha syānmakaradhvajaḥ ,
tasmai tvāṁ visṛjeyaṁ vai sa tvāṁ rakṣedyathārjunaḥ.
25. yadi kārṣṇiḥ dhanuṣpāṇiḥ iha syāt makaradhvajaḥ tasmai
tvām visṛjeyam vai saḥ tvām rakṣet yathā arjunaḥ
25. yadi kārṣṇiḥ dhanuṣpāṇiḥ makaradhvajaḥ iha syāt tasmai
tvām visṛjeyam vai saḥ tvām rakṣet yathā arjunaḥ
25. If Kārṣṇi (Pradyumna), the archer bearing the makara banner, were here, I would indeed hand you over to him; he would protect you just as Arjuna (protects).
कुरु त्वमात्मनो गुप्तिं कस्ते गोप्ता गते मयि ।
यः प्रतीयाद्रणे द्रोणं यावद्गच्छामि पाण्डवम् ॥२६॥
26. kuru tvamātmano guptiṁ kaste goptā gate mayi ,
yaḥ pratīyādraṇe droṇaṁ yāvadgacchāmi pāṇḍavam.
26. kuru tvam ātmanaḥ guptim kaḥ te goptā gate mayi
yaḥ pratīyāt raṇe droṇam yāvat gacchāmi pāṇḍavam
26. tvam ātmanaḥ guptim kuru kaḥ te goptā mayi gate
yaḥ pratīyāt raṇe droṇam yāvat gacchāmi pāṇḍavam
26. You (Duryodhana) must protect yourself, for who will be your protector once I am gone? Who would dare face (me) Droṇa in battle while I go to engage the Pāṇḍava (Arjuna)?
मा च ते भयमद्यास्तु राजन्नर्जुनसंभवम् ।
न स जातु महाबाहुर्भारमुद्यम्य सीदति ॥२७॥
27. mā ca te bhayamadyāstu rājannarjunasaṁbhavam ,
na sa jātu mahābāhurbhāramudyamya sīdati.
27. mā ca te bhayam adya astu rājan arjunasambhavam
| na saḥ jātu mahābāhuḥ bhāram udyamya sīdati
27. rājan te arjunasambhavam bhayam adya mā ca astu
saḥ mahābāhuḥ jātu bhāram udyamya na sīdati
27. O King, may there be no fear for you today originating from Arjuna. That mighty-armed warrior never falters after taking on a burden.
ये च सौवीरका योधास्तथा सैन्धवपौरवाः ।
उदीच्या दाक्षिणात्याश्च ये चान्येऽपि महारथाः ॥२८॥
28. ye ca sauvīrakā yodhāstathā saindhavapauravāḥ ,
udīcyā dākṣiṇātyāśca ye cānye'pi mahārathāḥ.
28. ye ca sauvīrakāḥ yodhāḥ tathā saindhavapauravāḥ |
udīcyāḥ dākṣiṇātyāḥ ca ye ca anye api mahārathāḥ
28. ye ca sauvīrakāḥ yodhāḥ,
tathā saindhavapauravāḥ,
udīcyāḥ dākṣiṇātyāḥ ca,
ye ca anye api mahārathāḥ
28. And those warriors from the Sauvira kingdom, as well as those from the Sindhu region and the Puru clan; the northerners and the southerners, and also any other great charioteers (mahārathas).
ये च कर्णमुखा राजन्रथोदाराः प्रकीर्तिताः ।
एतेऽर्जुनस्य क्रुद्धस्य कलां नार्हन्ति षोडशीम् ॥२९॥
29. ye ca karṇamukhā rājanrathodārāḥ prakīrtitāḥ ,
ete'rjunasya kruddhasya kalāṁ nārhanti ṣoḍaśīm.
29. ye ca karṇamukhāḥ rājan rathoḍārāḥ prakīrtitāḥ |
ete arjunasya kruddhasya kalām na arhanti ṣoḍaśīm
29. rājan ye ca karṇamukhāḥ rathoḍārāḥ prakīrtitāḥ,
ete kruddhasya arjunasya ṣoḍaśīm kalām na arhanti
29. O King, even those noble charioteers (rathodāras) led by Karna, who are renowned, do not equal even a sixteenth part of the enraged Arjuna.
उद्युक्ता पृथिवी सर्वा ससुरासुरमानुषा ।
सराक्षसगणा राजन्सकिंनरमहोरगा ॥३०॥

30. O King, the entire earth, including gods, asuras, and humans, along with the hosts of rākṣasas, and with kinnaras and great serpents, stands prepared (for battle).
जङ्गमाः स्थावरैः सार्धं नालं पार्थस्य संयुगे ।
एवं ज्ञात्वा महाराज व्येतु ते भीर्धनंजये ॥३१॥
31. jaṅgamāḥ sthāvaraiḥ sārdhaṁ nālaṁ pārthasya saṁyuge ,
evaṁ jñātvā mahārāja vyetu te bhīrdhanaṁjaye.
31. jaṅgamāḥ sthāvaraiḥ sārdham na alam pārthasya
saṃyuge evam jñātvā mahārāja vyetu te bhīḥ dhanaṃjaye
31. mahārāja jaṅgamāḥ sthāvaraiḥ sārdham pārthasya

31. O great king, even all moving and immovable beings combined are not sufficient in battle against Arjuna (Pārtha). Knowing this, let your fear concerning Dhanaṃjaya depart.
यत्र वीरौ महेष्वासौ कृष्णौ सत्यपराक्रमौ ।
न तत्र कर्मणो व्यापत्कथंचिदपि विद्यते ॥३२॥
32. yatra vīrau maheṣvāsau kṛṣṇau satyaparākramau ,
na tatra karmaṇo vyāpatkathaṁcidapi vidyate.

32. Where those two heroes, the great archers, the two Krishnas (Kṛṣṇa) of true valor are present, there is never any failure of action (karma) whatsoever.
दैवं कृतास्त्रतां योगममर्षमपि चाहवे ।
कृतज्ञतां दयां चैव भ्रातुस्त्वमनुचिन्तय ॥३३॥
33. daivaṁ kṛtāstratāṁ yogamamarṣamapi cāhave ,
kṛtajñatāṁ dayāṁ caiva bhrātustvamanucintaya.
33. daivam kṛtāstratām yogam amarṣam api ca āhave
kṛtajñatām dayām ca eva bhrātuḥ tvam anucintaya
33. tvam bhrātuḥ daivam kṛtāstratām yogam amarṣam
ca āhave api kṛtajñatām dayām ca eva anucintaya
33. And you (Dhṛtarāṣṭra), should reflect upon your brother's divine power (daiva), his mastery of weapons, his focused effort (yoga), his intolerance towards enemies even in battle, and indeed, his gratitude and compassion.
मयि चाप्यपयाते वै गच्छमानेऽर्जुनं प्रति ।
द्रोणे चित्रास्त्रतां संख्ये राजंस्त्वमनुचिन्तय ॥३४॥
34. mayi cāpyapayāte vai gacchamāne'rjunaṁ prati ,
droṇe citrāstratāṁ saṁkhye rājaṁstvamanucintaya.
34. mayi ca api apayāte vai gacchamāne arjunam prati
droṇe citrāstratām saṃkhye rājan tvam anucintaya
34. rājan mayi api apayāte vai arjunam prati gacchamāne
tvam droṇe saṃkhye citrāstratām ca anucintaya
34. And indeed, O king, when I (Saṃjaya) have gone, proceeding towards Arjuna, you should also consider Droṇa's diverse and wondrous skill with weapons in battle.
आचार्यो हि भृशं राजन्निग्रहे तव गृध्यति ।
प्रतिज्ञामात्मनो रक्षन्सत्यां कर्तुं च भारत ॥३५॥
35. ācāryo hi bhṛśaṁ rājannigrahe tava gṛdhyati ,
pratijñāmātmano rakṣansatyāṁ kartuṁ ca bhārata.
35. ācāryaḥ hi bhṛśam rājan nigrahe tava gṛdhyati
pratijñām ātmanaḥ rakṣan satyām kartum ca bhārata
35. ācāryaḥ hi rājan bhṛśam tava nigrahe gṛdhyati ca

35. O King, O Bhārata, the preceptor truly yearns greatly for your capture, seeking to keep his own promise (pratijñā) true.
कुरुष्वाद्यात्मनो गुप्तिं कस्ते गोप्ता गते मयि ।
यस्याहं प्रत्ययात्पार्थ गच्छेयं फल्गुनं प्रति ॥३६॥
36. kuruṣvādyātmano guptiṁ kaste goptā gate mayi ,
yasyāhaṁ pratyayātpārtha gaccheyaṁ phalgunaṁ prati.
36. kuruṣva adya ātmanaḥ guptim kaḥ te goptā gate mayi
yasya aham pratyayāt pārtha gaccheyam phalgunaṁ prati
36. adya ātmanaḥ guptim kuruṣva mayi gate kaḥ te goptā? pārtha,
yasya pratyayāt aham phalgunaṁ prati gaccheyam?
36. Today, secure your own safety. Who will be your protector when I am gone? On whose assurance, O Pārtha, could I go to fight Arjuna?
न ह्यहं त्वा महाराज अनिक्षिप्य महाहवे ।
क्वचिद्यास्यामि कौरव्य सत्यमेतद्ब्रवीमि ते ॥३७॥
37. na hyahaṁ tvā mahārāja anikṣipya mahāhave ,
kvacidyāsyāmi kauravya satyametadbravīmi te.
37. na hi aham tvā mahārāja anikṣipya mahāhave
kvacit yāsyāmi kauravya satyam etat bravīmi te
37. mahārāja kauravya,
hi aham tvā mahāhave anikṣipya kvacit na yāsyāmi.
etat satyam te bravīmi.
37. Indeed, O great King, O scion of Kuru, I shall not abandon you in this great battle and go anywhere. This truth I tell to you.
एतद्विचार्य बहुशो बुद्ध्या बुद्धिमतां वर ।
दृष्ट्वा श्रेयः परं बुद्ध्या ततो राजन्प्रशाधि माम् ॥३८॥
38. etadvicārya bahuśo buddhyā buddhimatāṁ vara ,
dṛṣṭvā śreyaḥ paraṁ buddhyā tato rājanpraśādhi mām.
38. etat vicārya bahuśaḥ buddhyā buddhimatām vara dṛṣṭvā
śreyaḥ param buddhyā tataḥ rājan praśādhi mām
38. buddhimatām vara,
rājan,
etat bahuśaḥ buddhyā vicārya param śreyaḥ buddhyā dṛṣṭvā tataḥ mām praśādhi.
38. O best among the intelligent, O King, having repeatedly deliberated upon this with your intellect, and having perceived the supreme good through your understanding, then instruct me.
युधिष्ठिर उवाच ।
एवमेतन्महाबाहो यथा वदसि माधव ।
न तु मे शुध्यते भावः श्वेताश्वं प्रति मारिष ॥३९॥
39. yudhiṣṭhira uvāca ,
evametanmahābāho yathā vadasi mādhava ,
na tu me śudhyate bhāvaḥ śvetāśvaṁ prati māriṣa.

mādhava na tu me śudhyate bhāvaḥ śvetāśvaṃ prati māriṣa

39. Yudhishthira said, "O mighty-armed Madhava, what you say is indeed true. However, my mind is not at ease concerning Shvetashva (Arjuna), O respected one."
करिष्ये परमं यत्नमात्मनो रक्षणं प्रति ।
गच्छ त्वं समनुज्ञातो यत्र यातो धनंजयः ॥४०॥
40. kariṣye paramaṁ yatnamātmano rakṣaṇaṁ prati ,
gaccha tvaṁ samanujñāto yatra yāto dhanaṁjayaḥ.
40. kariṣye paramam yatnam ātmanaḥ rakṣaṇam prati
gaccha tvam samanujñātaḥ yatra yātaḥ dhanaṃjayaḥ
40. kariṣye ātmanaḥ rakṣaṇam prati paramam yatnam
tvam samanujñātaḥ yatra dhanaṃjayaḥ yātaḥ gaccha
40. I will make the utmost effort for my own protection (ātman). You should go, having received permission, to where Dhananjaya (Arjuna) has gone.
आत्मसंरक्षणं संख्ये गमनं चार्जुनं प्रति ।
विचार्यैतद्द्वयं बुद्ध्या गमनं तत्र रोचये ॥४१॥
41. ātmasaṁrakṣaṇaṁ saṁkhye gamanaṁ cārjunaṁ prati ,
vicāryaitaddvayaṁ buddhyā gamanaṁ tatra rocaye.
41. ātmasaṃrakṣaṇam saṃkhye gamanam ca arjunam prati
vicārya etat dvayam buddhyā gamanam tatra rocaye
41. buddhyā ātmasaṃrakṣaṇam ca arjunam prati
gamanam etat dvayam vicārya tatra gamanam rocaye
41. Having considered these two aspects with my intellect - my own protection (ātman) in battle and proceeding towards Arjuna - I approve of going there.
स त्वमातिष्ठ यानाय यत्र यातो धनंजयः ।
ममापि रक्षणं भीमः करिष्यति महाबलः ॥४२॥
42. sa tvamātiṣṭha yānāya yatra yāto dhanaṁjayaḥ ,
mamāpi rakṣaṇaṁ bhīmaḥ kariṣyati mahābalaḥ.
42. sa tvam ātiṣṭha yānāya yatra yātaḥ dhanaṃjayaḥ
mama api rakṣaṇam bhīmaḥ kariṣyati mahābalaḥ
42. sa tvam yatra dhanaṃjayaḥ yātaḥ yānāya ātiṣṭha
mahābalaḥ bhīmaḥ mama api rakṣaṇam kariṣyati
42. Therefore, you should prepare for the journey to where Dhananjaya (Arjuna) has gone. The mighty Bhima will also ensure my protection.
पार्षतश्च ससोदर्यः पार्थिवाश्च महाबलाः ।
द्रौपदेयाश्च मां तात रक्षिष्यन्ति न संशयः ॥४३॥
43. pārṣataśca sasodaryaḥ pārthivāśca mahābalāḥ ,
draupadeyāśca māṁ tāta rakṣiṣyanti na saṁśayaḥ.
43. pārṣataḥ ca sasodaryaḥ pārthivāḥ ca mahābalāḥ
draupadeyāḥ ca mām tāta rakṣiṣyanti na saṃśayaḥ

43. O dear one, Pārṣata (Dhṛṣṭadyumna) and his uterine brothers, and the mighty kings, as well as Draupadi's sons - they will protect me, there is no doubt.
केकया भ्रातरः पञ्च राक्षसश्च घटोत्कचः ।
विराटो द्रुपदश्चैव शिखण्डी च महारथः ॥४४॥
44. kekayā bhrātaraḥ pañca rākṣasaśca ghaṭotkacaḥ ,
virāṭo drupadaścaiva śikhaṇḍī ca mahārathaḥ.
44. kekayāḥ bhrātaraḥ pañca rākṣasaḥ ca ghaṭotkacaḥ
virāṭaḥ drupadaḥ ca eva śikhaṇḍī ca mahārathaḥ
44. pañca kekayāḥ bhrātaraḥ ca rākṣasaḥ ghaṭotkacaḥ
virāṭaḥ ca drupadaḥ eva ca śikhaṇḍī ca mahārathaḥ
44. The five Kekaya brothers, and the demon Ghaṭotkaca, King Virāṭa, and King Drupada, and also Śikhaṇḍī, a great chariot warrior.
धृष्टकेतुश्च बलवान्कुन्तिभोजश्च मारिष ।
नकुलः सहदेवश्च पाञ्चालाः सृञ्जयास्तथा ।
एते समाहितास्तात रक्षिष्यन्ति न संशयः ॥४५॥
45. dhṛṣṭaketuśca balavānkuntibhojaśca māriṣa ,
nakulaḥ sahadevaśca pāñcālāḥ sṛñjayāstathā ,
ete samāhitāstāta rakṣiṣyanti na saṁśayaḥ.
45. dhṛṣṭaketuḥ ca balavān kuntibhojaḥ
ca māriṣa nakulaḥ sahadevaḥ ca
pāñcālāḥ sṛñjayāḥ tathā ete samāhitāḥ
tāta rakṣiṣyanti na saṃśayaḥ
45. māriṣa,
dhṛṣṭaketuḥ ca balavān kuntibhojaḥ ca nakulaḥ ca sahadevaḥ ca pāñcālāḥ tathā sṛñjayāḥ ca tāta ete samāhitāḥ rakṣiṣyanti na saṃśayaḥ
45. O venerable one, and Dhṛṣṭaketu, the powerful Kuntibhoja, and Nakula and Sahadeva, and the Pāñcālas, and similarly the Sṛñjayas - O dear one, all of these are well-prepared and will protect (me), there is no doubt.
न द्रोणः सह सैन्येन कृतवर्मा च संयुगे ।
समासादयितुं शक्तो न च मां धर्षयिष्यति ॥४६॥
46. na droṇaḥ saha sainyena kṛtavarmā ca saṁyuge ,
samāsādayituṁ śakto na ca māṁ dharṣayiṣyati.
46. na droṇaḥ saha sainyena kṛtavarmā ca saṃyuge
samāsādayitum śaktaḥ na ca mām dharṣayiṣyati
46. saṃyuge droṇaḥ saha sainyena ca kṛtavarmā ca
samāsādayitum na śaktaḥ ca mām na dharṣayiṣyati
46. Neither Droṇa with his army, nor Kṛtavarmā, are capable of encountering (them) in battle; nor will he overpower me.
धृष्टद्युम्नश्च समरे द्रोणं क्रुद्धं परंतपः ।
वारयिष्यति विक्रम्य वेलेव मकरालयम् ॥४७॥
47. dhṛṣṭadyumnaśca samare droṇaṁ kruddhaṁ paraṁtapaḥ ,
vārayiṣyati vikramya veleva makarālayam.
47. dhṛṣṭadyumnaḥ ca samare droṇam kruddham paraṃtapaḥ
vārayiṣyati vikramya velā iva makarālayam
47. paraṃtapaḥ dhṛṣṭadyumnaḥ ca samare vikramya kruddham
droṇam velā m a k a r ā l a y a m iva vārayiṣyati
47. And Dhṛṣṭadyumna, the tormentor of foes, will valiantly restrain the enraged Drona in battle, just as a shore contains the ocean.
यत्र स्थास्यति संग्रामे पार्षतः परवीरहा ।
न द्रोणसैन्यं बलवत्क्रामेत्तत्र कथंचन ॥४८॥
48. yatra sthāsyati saṁgrāme pārṣataḥ paravīrahā ,
na droṇasainyaṁ balavatkrāmettatra kathaṁcana.
48. yatra sthāsyati saṃgrāme pārṣataḥ paravīrahā na
droṇasainyam balavat krāmet tatra kathaṃcana
48. yatra saṃgrāme paravīrahā pārṣataḥ sthāsyati,

48. Wherever Pārṣata, the slayer of enemy heroes, stands in battle, Drona's powerful army will certainly not be able to cross that line by any means.
एष द्रोणविनाशाय समुत्पन्नो हुताशनात् ।
कवची स शरी खड्गी धन्वी च वरभूषणः ॥४९॥
49. eṣa droṇavināśāya samutpanno hutāśanāt ,
kavacī sa śarī khaḍgī dhanvī ca varabhūṣaṇaḥ.

kavacī saḥ śarī khaḍgī dhanvī ca varabhūṣaṇaḥ
49. eṣaḥ droṇavināśāya hutāśanāt samutpannaḥ.

dhanvī ca varabhūṣaṇaḥ.
49. This Dhṛṣṭadyumna was born from the sacrificial fire (yajña) for the destruction of Drona. He is armored, armed with arrows, sword-wielding, bow-wielding, and possesses excellent ornaments.
विश्रब्धो गच्छ शैनेय मा कार्षीर्मयि संभ्रमम् ।
धृष्टद्युम्नो रणे क्रुद्धो द्रोणमावारयिष्यति ॥५०॥
50. viśrabdho gaccha śaineya mā kārṣīrmayi saṁbhramam ,
dhṛṣṭadyumno raṇe kruddho droṇamāvārayiṣyati.
50. viśrabdhaḥ gaccha śaineya mā kārṣīḥ mayi saṃbhramam
dhṛṣṭadyumnaḥ raṇe kruddhaḥ droṇam āvārayiṣyati
50. śaineya,
viśrabdhaḥ gaccha.

dhṛṣṭadyumnaḥ raṇe kruddhaḥ droṇam āvārayiṣyati.
50. Go forth confidently, O Śaineya! Do not be agitated about me. Dhṛṣṭadyumna, enraged in battle, will restrain Drona.
