गजानीके हते तस्मिन्पाण्डुपुत्रेण भारत ।
वध्यमाने बले चैव भीमसेनेन संयुगे ॥१॥

vadhyamāne bale caiva bhīmasenena saṁyuge.

1. Sañjaya said: "O Bhārata, when that elephant division had been killed by the son of Pāṇḍu, and indeed when the army was being slaughtered by Bhīmasena in battle..."
चरन्तं च तथा दृष्ट्वा भीमसेनमरिंदमम् ।
दण्डहस्तं यथा क्रुद्धमन्तकं प्राणहारिणम् ॥२॥
2. carantaṁ ca tathā dṛṣṭvā bhīmasenamariṁdamam ,
daṇḍahastaṁ yathā kruddhamantakaṁ prāṇahāriṇam.

daṇḍahastam yathā kruddham antakam prāṇahāriṇam

2. ...and having seen Bhīmasena, the subduer of enemies, moving about thus, mace in hand, like an enraged Antaka (Yama), the taker of lives.
समेत्य समरे राजन्हतशेषाः सुतास्तव ।
अदृश्यमाने कौरव्ये पुत्रे दुर्योधने तव ।
सोदर्याः सहिता भूत्वा भीमसेनमुपाद्रवन् ॥३॥
3. sametya samare rājanhataśeṣāḥ sutāstava ,
adṛśyamāne kauravye putre duryodhane tava ,
sodaryāḥ sahitā bhūtvā bhīmasenamupādravan.
दुर्मर्षणो महाराज जैत्रो भूरिबलो रविः ।
इत्येते सहिता भूत्वा तव पुत्राः समन्ततः ।
भीमसेनमभिद्रुत्य रुरुधुः सर्वतोदिशम् ॥४॥
4. durmarṣaṇo mahārāja jaitro bhūribalo raviḥ ,
ityete sahitā bhūtvā tava putrāḥ samantataḥ ,
bhīmasenamabhidrutya rurudhuḥ sarvatodiśam.
ततो भीमो महाराज स्वरथं पुनरास्थितः ।
मुमोच निशितान्बाणान्पुत्राणां तव मर्मसु ॥५॥
5. tato bhīmo mahārāja svarathaṁ punarāsthitaḥ ,
mumoca niśitānbāṇānputrāṇāṁ tava marmasu.
ते कीर्यमाणा भीमेन पुत्रास्तव महारणे ।
भीमसेनमपासेधन्प्रवणादिव कुञ्जरम् ॥६॥
6. te kīryamāṇā bhīmena putrāstava mahāraṇe ,
bhīmasenamapāsedhanpravaṇādiva kuñjaram.
ततः क्रुद्धो रणे भीमः शिरो दुर्मर्षणस्य ह ।
क्षुरप्रेण प्रमथ्याशु पातयामास भूतले ॥७॥
7. tataḥ kruddho raṇe bhīmaḥ śiro durmarṣaṇasya ha ,
kṣurapreṇa pramathyāśu pātayāmāsa bhūtale.

7. Then, enraged in battle, Bhima quickly struck Durmarṣaṇa's head with a razor-sharp arrow, causing it to fall to the ground.
ततोऽपरेण भल्लेन सर्वावरणभेदिना ।
श्रुतान्तमवधीद्भीमस्तव पुत्रं महारथः ॥८॥
8. tato'pareṇa bhallena sarvāvaraṇabhedinā ,
śrutāntamavadhīdbhīmastava putraṁ mahārathaḥ.

śrutāntam avadhīt bhīmaḥ tava putram mahārathaḥ

8. Then, with another arrow, one that could pierce all armor, Bhima, the great charioteer, struck down your son, Śrutānta.
जयत्सेनं ततो विद्ध्वा नाराचेन हसन्निव ।
पातयामास कौरव्यं रथोपस्थादरिंदमः ।
स पपात रथाद्राजन्भूमौ तूर्णं ममार च ॥९॥
9. jayatsenaṁ tato viddhvā nārācena hasanniva ,
pātayāmāsa kauravyaṁ rathopasthādariṁdamaḥ ,
sa papāta rathādrājanbhūmau tūrṇaṁ mamāra ca.

hasan iva pātayāmāsa kauravyam
rathopasthāt ariṃdamaḥ saḥ papāta

9. Then, the subduer of enemies (Bhima), as if laughing, pierced Jayatsena, the Kuru prince, with an iron arrow and caused him to fall from his chariot seat. O King, he quickly fell from the chariot to the ground and died.
श्रुतर्वा तु ततो भीमं क्रुद्धो विव्याध मारिष ।
शतेन गृध्रवाजानां शराणां नतपर्वणाम् ॥१०॥
10. śrutarvā tu tato bhīmaṁ kruddho vivyādha māriṣa ,
śatena gṛdhravājānāṁ śarāṇāṁ nataparvaṇām.

10. But then, enraged, Śrutarvā, O honorable one, pierced Bhima with a hundred arrows, feathered with vulture plumes and having straight shafts.
ततः क्रुद्धो रणे भीमो जैत्रं भूरिबलं रविम् ।
त्रीनेतांस्त्रिभिरानर्छद्विषाग्निप्रतिमैः शरैः ॥११॥
11. tataḥ kruddho raṇe bhīmo jaitraṁ bhūribalaṁ ravim ,
trīnetāṁstribhirānarchadviṣāgnipratimaiḥ śaraiḥ.

11. Then, enraged, Bhīma in battle struck these three - Jaitra, Bhūribala, and Ravi - with three arrows resembling poison and fire.
ते हता न्यपतन्भूमौ स्यन्दनेभ्यो महारथाः ।
वसन्ते पुष्पशबला निकृत्ता इव किंशुकाः ॥१२॥
12. te hatā nyapatanbhūmau syandanebhyo mahārathāḥ ,
vasante puṣpaśabalā nikṛttā iva kiṁśukāḥ.
12. te hatāḥ nyapatan bhūmau syandanebhyaḥ mahārathāḥ
vasante puṣpa-śabalāḥ nikṛttāḥ iva kiṃśukāḥ
12. te mahārathāḥ hatāḥ syandanebhyaḥ bhūmau nyapatan,
vasante puṣpa-śabalāḥ nikṛttāḥ kiṃśukāḥ iva.
12. Struck down, those great chariot-warriors fell from their chariots to the ground, just like variegated Kiṃśuka trees, laden with flowers, are cut down in spring.
ततोऽपरेण तीक्ष्णेन नाराचेन परंतपः ।
दुर्विमोचनमाहत्य प्रेषयामास मृत्यवे ॥१३॥
13. tato'pareṇa tīkṣṇena nārācena paraṁtapaḥ ,
durvimocanamāhatya preṣayāmāsa mṛtyave.
13. tataḥ apareṇa tīkṣṇena nārācena paraṃtapaḥ
durvimocanam āhatya preṣayāmāsa mṛtyave
13. tataḥ paraṃtapaḥ apareṇa tīkṣṇena nārācena durvimocanam āhatya mṛtyave preṣayāmāsa.
13. Then, the scorcher of foes (paraṃtapa) struck Durvimocana with another sharp arrow and sent him to his death.
स हतः प्रापतद्भूमौ स्वरथाद्रथिनां वरः ।
गिरेस्तु कूटजो भग्नो मारुतेनेव पादपः ॥१४॥
14. sa hataḥ prāpatadbhūmau svarathādrathināṁ varaḥ ,
girestu kūṭajo bhagno māruteneva pādapaḥ.
14. saḥ hataḥ prāpatat bhūmau sva-rathāt rathinām
varaḥ gireḥ tu kūṭajaḥ bhagnaḥ mārutena iva pādapaḥ
14. saḥ rathinām varaḥ hataḥ sva-rathāt bhūmau prāpatat,
tu gireḥ kūṭajaḥ mārutena bhagnaḥ pādapaḥ iva.
14. Struck down, he, the best of charioteers, fell from his own chariot to the ground, just as a tree growing on a mountain peak is broken by the wind (māruta).
दुष्प्रधर्षं ततश्चैव सुजातं च सुतौ तव ।
एकैकं न्यवधीत्संख्ये द्वाभ्यां द्वाभ्यां चमूमुखे ।
तौ शिलीमुखविद्धाङ्गौ पेततू रथसत्तमौ ॥१५॥
15. duṣpradharṣaṁ tataścaiva sujātaṁ ca sutau tava ,
ekaikaṁ nyavadhītsaṁkhye dvābhyāṁ dvābhyāṁ camūmukhe ,
tau śilīmukhaviddhāṅgau petatū rathasattamau.
ततो यतन्तमपरमभिवीक्ष्य सुतं तव ।
भल्लेन युधि विव्याध भीमो दुर्विषहं रणे ।
स पपात हतो वाहात्पश्यतां सर्वधन्विनाम् ॥१६॥
16. tato yatantamaparamabhivīkṣya sutaṁ tava ,
bhallena yudhi vivyādha bhīmo durviṣahaṁ raṇe ,
sa papāta hato vāhātpaśyatāṁ sarvadhanvinām.
दृष्ट्वा तु निहतान्भ्रातॄन्बहूनेकेन संयुगे ।
अमर्षवशमापन्नः श्रुतर्वा भीममभ्ययात् ॥१७॥
17. dṛṣṭvā tu nihatānbhrātṝnbahūnekena saṁyuge ,
amarṣavaśamāpannaḥ śrutarvā bhīmamabhyayāt.
विक्षिपन्सुमहच्चापं कार्तस्वरविभूषितम् ।
विसृजन्सायकांश्चैव विषाग्निप्रतिमान्बहून् ॥१८॥
18. vikṣipansumahaccāpaṁ kārtasvaravibhūṣitam ,
visṛjansāyakāṁścaiva viṣāgnipratimānbahūn.
स तु राजन्धनुश्छित्त्वा पाण्डवस्य महामृधे ।
अथैनं छिन्नधन्वानं विंशत्या समवाकिरत् ॥१९॥
19. sa tu rājandhanuśchittvā pāṇḍavasya mahāmṛdhe ,
athainaṁ chinnadhanvānaṁ viṁśatyā samavākirat.
ततोऽन्यद्धनुरादाय भीमसेनो महारथः ।
अवाकिरत्तव सुतं तिष्ठ तिष्ठेति चाब्रवीत् ॥२०॥
20. tato'nyaddhanurādāya bhīmaseno mahārathaḥ ,
avākirattava sutaṁ tiṣṭha tiṣṭheti cābravīt.
महदासीत्तयोर्युद्धं चित्ररूपं भयानकम् ।
यादृशं समरे पूर्वं जम्भवासवयोरभूत् ॥२१॥
21. mahadāsīttayoryuddhaṁ citrarūpaṁ bhayānakam ,
yādṛśaṁ samare pūrvaṁ jambhavāsavayorabhūt.
तयोस्तत्र शरैर्मुक्तैर्यमदण्डनिभैः शुभैः ।
समाच्छन्ना धरा सर्वा खं च सर्वा दिशस्तथा ॥२२॥
22. tayostatra śarairmuktairyamadaṇḍanibhaiḥ śubhaiḥ ,
samācchannā dharā sarvā khaṁ ca sarvā diśastathā.
ततः श्रुतर्वा संक्रुद्धो धनुरायम्य सायकैः ।
भीमसेनं रणे राजन्बाह्वोरुरसि चार्पयत् ॥२३॥
23. tataḥ śrutarvā saṁkruddho dhanurāyamya sāyakaiḥ ,
bhīmasenaṁ raṇe rājanbāhvorurasi cārpayat.
23. tataḥ śrutarvā saṃkruddhaḥ dhanuḥ āyamya sāyakaiḥ
bhīmasenaṃ raṇe rājan bāhvoḥ urasi ca arpayat
23. rājan tataḥ saṃkruddhaḥ śrutarvā dhanuḥ āyamya

23. Then, O King, Śrutarvan, greatly enraged, drew his bow and struck Bhīmasena in battle with arrows, piercing his arms and chest.
सोऽतिविद्धो महाराज तव पुत्रेण धन्विना ।
भीमः संचुक्षुभे क्रुद्धः पर्वणीव महोदधिः ॥२४॥
24. so'tividdho mahārāja tava putreṇa dhanvinā ,
bhīmaḥ saṁcukṣubhe kruddhaḥ parvaṇīva mahodadhiḥ.
24. saḥ atividdhaḥ mahārāja tava putreṇa dhanvinā
bhīmaḥ saṃcukṣubhe kruddhaḥ parvaṇi iva mahodadhiḥ
24. mahārāja tava putreṇa dhanvinā atividdhaḥ saḥ
bhīmaḥ kruddhaḥ parvaṇi mahodadhiḥ iva saṃcukṣubhe
24. O great King, Bhīma, deeply wounded by your son, the archer, became greatly agitated and enraged, just like the great ocean during a full or new moon.
ततो भीमो रुषाविष्टः पुत्रस्य तव मारिष ।
सारथिं चतुरश्चाश्वान्बाणैर्निन्ये यमक्षयम् ॥२५॥
25. tato bhīmo ruṣāviṣṭaḥ putrasya tava māriṣa ,
sārathiṁ caturaścāśvānbāṇairninye yamakṣayam.
25. tataḥ bhīmaḥ ruṣāviṣṭaḥ putrasya tava māriṣa
sārathiṃ caturaḥ ca aśvān bāṇaiḥ ninye yamakṣayam

25. Then, O venerable one, Bhīma, overcome by fury, sent your son's charioteer and four horses to the abode of Yama (death) with his arrows.
विरथं तं समालक्ष्य विशिखैर्लोमवाहिभिः ।
अवाकिरदमेयात्मा दर्शयन्पाणिलाघवम् ॥२६॥
26. virathaṁ taṁ samālakṣya viśikhairlomavāhibhiḥ ,
avākiradameyātmā darśayanpāṇilāghavam.

avākirat ameyātmā darśayan pāṇilāghavam

26. Having seen him (the son) dismounted, Bhīma, whose spirit (ātman) was immeasurable, showered him with sharp, hair-piercing arrows, demonstrating his remarkable hand dexterity.
श्रुतर्वा विरथो राजन्नाददे खड्गचर्मणी ।
अथास्याददतः खड्गं शतचन्द्रं च भानुमत् ।
क्षुरप्रेण शिरः कायात्पातयामास पाण्डवः ॥२७॥
27. śrutarvā viratho rājannādade khaḍgacarmaṇī ,
athāsyādadataḥ khaḍgaṁ śatacandraṁ ca bhānumat ,
kṣurapreṇa śiraḥ kāyātpātayāmāsa pāṇḍavaḥ.

khaḍgacarmaṇī atha asya ādadantaḥ khaḍgam
śatacaṃdram ca bhānumat kṣurapreṇa
śiraḥ kāyāt pātayāmāsa pāṇḍavaḥ
27. rājan,
virathaḥ śrutarvā khaḍgacarmaṇī ādade.
atha asya śatacaṃdram ca bhānumat khaḍgam ādadantaḥ (sati),
pāṇḍavaḥ kṣurapreṇa kāyāt śiraḥ pātayāmāsa.
27. O King, Śrutarvā, having been deprived of his chariot, took up a sword and shield. Then, as he was taking up his luminous sword, which was marked with a hundred circles, the Pāṇḍava (Bhīmasena) severed his head from his body with a razor-sharp arrow (kṣurapra).
छिन्नोत्तमाङ्गस्य ततः क्षुरप्रेण महात्मनः ।
पपात कायः स रथाद्वसुधामनुनादयन् ॥२८॥
28. chinnottamāṅgasya tataḥ kṣurapreṇa mahātmanaḥ ,
papāta kāyaḥ sa rathādvasudhāmanunādayan.
28. chinnottamāṅgasya tataḥ kṣurapreṇa mahātmanaḥ
papāta kāyaḥ saḥ rathāt vasudhām anunādayan
28. tataḥ kṣurapreṇa chinnottamāṅgasya mahātmanaḥ saḥ kāyaḥ rathāt vasudhām anunādayan papāta.
28. Then, the body of that great-souled (mahātman) warrior, whose head had been severed by the razor-sharp arrow (kṣurapra), fell from the chariot, causing the earth (vasudhā) to reverberate.
तस्मिन्निपतिते वीरे तावका भयमोहिताः ।
अभ्यद्रवन्त संग्रामे भीमसेनं युयुत्सवः ॥२९॥
29. tasminnipatite vīre tāvakā bhayamohitāḥ ,
abhyadravanta saṁgrāme bhīmasenaṁ yuyutsavaḥ.
29. tasmin nipatite vīre tāvakāḥ bhayamohitāḥ
abhyadravanta saṃgrāme bhīmasenam yuyutsavaḥ
29. tasmin vīre nipatite (sati),
bhayamohitāḥ tāvakāḥ yuyutsavaḥ (santaḥ) saṃgrāme bhīmasenam abhyadravanta.
29. When that hero (Śrutarvā) had fallen, your warriors, bewildered by fear, then rushed towards Bhīmasena in battle, eager to fight.
तानापतत एवाशु हतशेषाद्बलार्णवात् ।
दंशितः प्रतिजग्राह भीमसेनः प्रतापवान् ।
ते तु तं वै समासाद्य परिवव्रुः समन्ततः ॥३०॥
30. tānāpatata evāśu hataśeṣādbalārṇavāt ,
daṁśitaḥ pratijagrāha bhīmasenaḥ pratāpavān ,
te tu taṁ vai samāsādya parivavruḥ samantataḥ.
30. tān āpatataḥ eva āśu hataseṣāt
balārṇavāt daṃśitaḥ pratijagrāha
bhīmasenaḥ pratāpavān te tu tam
vai samāsādya parivavruḥ samantataḥ
30. pratāpavān daṃśitaḥ bhīmasenaḥ,
hataseṣāt balārṇavāt āśu āpatataḥ tān eva pratijagrāha.
te tu tam samāsādya vai samantataḥ parivavruḥ.
30. The mighty Bhīmasena, clad in armor, swiftly received them – the remaining warriors from the ocean-like army – as they advanced. Having reached him, those warriors then surrounded him from all sides.
ततस्तु संवृतो भीमस्तावकैर्निशितैः शरैः ।
पीडयामास तान्सर्वान्सहस्राक्ष इवासुरान् ॥३१॥
31. tatastu saṁvṛto bhīmastāvakairniśitaiḥ śaraiḥ ,
pīḍayāmāsa tānsarvānsahasrākṣa ivāsurān.
31. tataḥ tu saṃvṛtaḥ bhīmaḥ tāvakaiḥ niśitaiḥ śaraiḥ
pīḍayāmāsa tān sarvān sahasrākṣaḥ iva asurān
31. bhīmaḥ tataḥ tu tāvakaiḥ niśitaiḥ śaraiḥ saṃvṛtaḥ
tān sarvān sahasrākṣaḥ iva asurān pīḍayāmāsa
31. Then, Bhima, even though surrounded by your men's sharp arrows, tormented all of them, just as Indra (sahasrākṣa) would oppress the demons.
ततः पञ्चशतान्हत्वा सवरूथान्महारथान् ।
जघान कुञ्जरानीकं पुनः सप्तशतं युधि ॥३२॥
32. tataḥ pañcaśatānhatvā savarūthānmahārathān ,
jaghāna kuñjarānīkaṁ punaḥ saptaśataṁ yudhi.
32. tataḥ pañcaśatān hatvā savarūthān mahārathān
jaghāna kuñjarānīkaṃ punaḥ saptaśataṃ yudhi
32. tataḥ hatvā pañcaśatān savarūthān mahārathān,

32. Then, having slain five hundred great charioteers along with their chariots, he further killed seven hundred (members of) the elephant contingent in battle.
हत्वा दश सहस्राणि पत्तीनां परमेषुभिः ।
वाजिनां च शतान्यष्टौ पाण्डवः स्म विराजते ॥३३॥
33. hatvā daśa sahasrāṇi pattīnāṁ parameṣubhiḥ ,
vājināṁ ca śatānyaṣṭau pāṇḍavaḥ sma virājate.
33. hatvā daśa sahasrāṇi pattīnāṃ parameṣubhiḥ
vājināṃ ca śatāni aṣṭau pāṇḍavaḥ sma virājate

33. Having slain ten thousand foot-soldiers with his excellent arrows, and also eight hundred horses, the Pandava (Bhima) truly shone with glory.
भीमसेनस्तु कौन्तेयो हत्वा युद्धे सुतांस्तव ।
मेने कृतार्थमात्मानं सफलं जन्म च प्रभो ॥३४॥
34. bhīmasenastu kaunteyo hatvā yuddhe sutāṁstava ,
mene kṛtārthamātmānaṁ saphalaṁ janma ca prabho.
34. bhīmasenaḥ tu kaunteyaḥ hatvā yuddhe sutān tava
mene kṛtārtham ātmānaṃ saphalaṃ janma ca prabho
34. prabho,

34. Indeed, Bhimasena, the son of Kunti, having slain your sons in battle, considered himself (ātman) to have achieved his purpose and his birth to be fruitful, O lord.
तं तथा युध्यमानं च विनिघ्नन्तं च तावकान् ।
