सूत उवाच ।
एतच्छ्रुत्वा जरत्कारुर्दुःखशोकपरायणः ।
उवाच स्वान्पितॄन्दुःखाद्बाष्पसंदिग्धया गिरा ॥१॥
1. sūta uvāca ,
etacchrutvā jaratkārurduḥkhaśokaparāyaṇaḥ ,
uvāca svānpitṝnduḥkhādbāṣpasaṁdigdhayā girā.
1. sūtaḥ uvāca etat śrutvā jaratkāruḥ duḥkhaśokaparāyaṇaḥ
uvāca svān pitṝn duḥkhāt bāṣpasaṃdigdhayā girā
1. Sūta said: Having heard this, Jarātkāru, overwhelmed by sorrow and grief, spoke to his own ancestors out of distress, with a voice choked with tears.
अहमेव जरत्कारुः किल्बिषी भवतां सुतः ।
तद्दण्डं धारयत मे दुष्कृतेरकृतात्मनः ॥२॥
2. ahameva jaratkāruḥ kilbiṣī bhavatāṁ sutaḥ ,
taddaṇḍaṁ dhārayata me duṣkṛterakṛtātmanaḥ.
2. aham eva jaratkāruḥ kilbiṣī bhavatām sutaḥ
tat daṇḍam dhārayata me duṣkṛteḥ akṛtātmanaḥ
2. I am indeed Jaratkāru, your sinful son. Therefore, inflict that punishment upon me, a wrongdoer with an uncultivated self.
पितर ऊचुः ।
पुत्र दिष्ट्यासि संप्राप्त इमं देशं यदृच्छया ।
किमर्थं च त्वया ब्रह्मन्न कृतो दारसंग्रहः ॥३॥
3. pitara ūcuḥ ,
putra diṣṭyāsi saṁprāpta imaṁ deśaṁ yadṛcchayā ,
kimarthaṁ ca tvayā brahmanna kṛto dārasaṁgrahaḥ.
3. pitaraḥ ūcuḥ putra diṣṭyā asi saṃprāptaḥ imam deśam
yadṛcchayā kimartham ca tvayā brahman akṛtaḥ dārasaṅgrahaḥ
3. The ancestors said: 'O son, it is by good fortune that you have reached this place by chance! And why, O Brāhmaṇa, have you not taken a wife?'
जरत्कारुरुवाच ।
ममायं पितरो नित्यं हृद्यर्थः परिवर्तते ।
ऊर्ध्वरेताः शरीरं वै प्रापयेयममुत्र वै ॥४॥
4. jaratkāruruvāca ,
mamāyaṁ pitaro nityaṁ hṛdyarthaḥ parivartate ,
ūrdhvaretāḥ śarīraṁ vai prāpayeyamamutra vai.
4. jaratkāruḥ uvāca mama ayam pitaraḥ nityam hṛdi arthaḥ
parivartate ūrdhvaretāḥ śarīram vai prāpayeyam amutra vai
4. Jaratkāru said: 'O ancestors, this resolve is always in my heart: I wish to attain the other world with a body that has preserved its vital energy (through celibacy).'
एवं दृष्ट्वा तु भवतः शकुन्तानिव लम्बतः ।
मया निवर्तिता बुद्धिर्ब्रह्मचर्यात्पितामहाः ॥५॥
5. evaṁ dṛṣṭvā tu bhavataḥ śakuntāniva lambataḥ ,
mayā nivartitā buddhirbrahmacaryātpitāmahāḥ.
5. evam dṛṣṭvā tu bhavataḥ śakuntān iva lambataḥ
mayā nivartitā buddhiḥ brahmacaryāt pitāmahāḥ
5. O grandfathers, seeing you thus, hanging down like birds, my mind has been turned away from celibacy.
करिष्ये वः प्रियं कामं निवेक्ष्ये नात्र संशयः ।
सनाम्नीं यद्यहं कन्यामुपलप्स्ये कदाचन ॥६॥
6. kariṣye vaḥ priyaṁ kāmaṁ nivekṣye nātra saṁśayaḥ ,
sanāmnīṁ yadyahaṁ kanyāmupalapsye kadācana.
6. kariṣye vaḥ priyam kāmam nivekṣye na atra saṃśayaḥ
sanāmnīm yadi aham kanyām upalapsye kadācana
6. I shall fulfill your cherished desire and marry; there is no doubt about it. This will happen if I ever find a maiden who shares my name.
भविष्यति च या काचिद्भैक्षवत्स्वयमुद्यता ।
प्रतिग्रहीता तामस्मि न भरेयं च यामहम् ॥७॥
7. bhaviṣyati ca yā kācidbhaikṣavatsvayamudyatā ,
pratigrahītā tāmasmi na bhareyaṁ ca yāmaham.
7. bhaviṣyati ca yā kācit bhaikṣavat svayam udyatā
pratigrahītā tām asmi na bhareyam ca yām aham
7. And any woman who spontaneously presents herself, like alms, I shall accept; but I shall not accept one whom I cannot support.
एवंविधमहं कुर्यां निवेशं प्राप्नुयां यदि ।
अन्यथा न करिष्ये तु सत्यमेतत्पितामहाः ॥८॥
8. evaṁvidhamahaṁ kuryāṁ niveśaṁ prāpnuyāṁ yadi ,
anyathā na kariṣye tu satyametatpitāmahāḥ.
8. evamvidham aham kuryām niveśam prāpnuyām yadi
anyathā na kariṣye tu satyam etat pitāmahāḥ
8. If I obtain such a household life, I would proceed accordingly. Otherwise, I will not. This is the truth, O grandfathers!
सूत उवाच ।
एवमुक्त्वा तु स पितॄंश्चचार पृथिवीं मुनिः ।
न च स्म लभते भार्यां वृद्धोऽयमिति शौनक ॥९॥
9. sūta uvāca ,
evamuktvā tu sa pitṝṁścacāra pṛthivīṁ muniḥ ,
na ca sma labhate bhāryāṁ vṛddho'yamiti śaunaka.
9. sūta uvāca evam uktvā tu saḥ pitṝn cacāra pṛthivīm
muniḥ na ca sma labhate bhāryām vṛddhaḥ ayam iti śaunaka
9. Sūta said: Having spoken thus, that sage wandered the earth in accordance with his ancestors' wishes. However, O Śaunaka, he did not find a wife, for people considered him old.
यदा निर्वेदमापन्नः पितृभिश्चोदितस्तथा ।
तदारण्यं स गत्वोच्चैश्चुक्रोश भृशदुःखितः ॥१०॥
10. yadā nirvedamāpannaḥ pitṛbhiścoditastathā ,
tadāraṇyaṁ sa gatvoccaiścukrośa bhṛśaduḥkhitaḥ.
10. yadā nirvedam āpannaḥ pitṛbhiḥ coditaḥ tathā tadā
araṇyam saḥ gatvā uccaiḥ cukrośa bhṛśaduḥkhitaḥ
10. When he became despondent, having been repeatedly urged by his ancestors, he then went to the forest and cried out loudly, utterly distressed.
यानि भूतानि सन्तीह स्थावराणि चराणि च ।
अन्तर्हितानि वा यानि तानि शृण्वन्तु मे वचः ॥११॥
11. yāni bhūtāni santīha sthāvarāṇi carāṇi ca ,
antarhitāni vā yāni tāni śṛṇvantu me vacaḥ.
11. yāni bhūtāni santi iha sthāvarāṇi carāṇi ca
antarhitāni vā yāni tāni śṛṇvantu me vacaḥ
11. May all beings present here, whether stationary or moving, or even those that are hidden, listen to my words.
उग्रे तपसि वर्तन्तं पितरश्चोदयन्ति माम् ।
निविशस्वेति दुःखार्तास्तेषां प्रियचिकीर्षया ॥१२॥
12. ugre tapasi vartantaṁ pitaraścodayanti mām ,
niviśasveti duḥkhārtāsteṣāṁ priyacikīrṣayā.
12. ugre tapasi vartantam pitaraḥ codayanti mām
niviśasva iti duḥkhārtāḥ teṣām priyacikīrṣayā
12. My ancestors, distressed, urge me, who am engaged in severe asceticism, saying, 'Get married (settle down)!,' out of a desire to please them.
निवेशार्थ्यखिलां भूमिं कन्याभैक्षं चरामि भोः ।
दरिद्रो दुःखशीलश्च पितृभिः संनियोजितः ॥१३॥
13. niveśārthyakhilāṁ bhūmiṁ kanyābhaikṣaṁ carāmi bhoḥ ,
daridro duḥkhaśīlaśca pitṛbhiḥ saṁniyojitaḥ.
13. niveśārthī akhilām bhūmim kanyābhaikṣam carāmi
bhoḥ daridraḥ duḥkhaśīlaḥ ca pitṛbhiḥ saṃniyojitaḥ
13. O sir, I wander the entire earth for a maiden as alms, seeking a place to settle, poor and wretched, having been commanded by my ancestors.
यस्य कन्यास्ति भूतस्य ये मयेह प्रकीर्तिताः ।
ते मे कन्यां प्रयच्छन्तु चरतः सर्वतोदिशम् ॥१४॥
14. yasya kanyāsti bhūtasya ye mayeha prakīrtitāḥ ,
te me kanyāṁ prayacchantu carataḥ sarvatodiśam.
14. yasya kanyā asti bhūtasya ye mayā iha prakīrtitāḥ
te me kanyām prayacchantu carataḥ sarvatodiśam
14. Let those beings, of whom I have spoken here, and who have a maiden, give a maiden to me, who wanders in all directions.
मम कन्या सनाम्नी या भैक्षवच्चोद्यता भवेत् ।
भरेयं चैव यां नाहं तां मे कन्यां प्रयच्छत ॥१५॥
15. mama kanyā sanāmnī yā bhaikṣavaccodyatā bhavet ,
bhareyaṁ caiva yāṁ nāhaṁ tāṁ me kanyāṁ prayacchata.
15. mama kanyā sanāmnī yā bhaikṣavat codyatā bhavet
bhareyam ca eva yām na aham tām me kanyām prayacchata
15. Give me that maiden who shares my name, who must be sought like alms, and whom I myself would not be able to support.
ततस्ते पन्नगा ये वै जरत्कारौ समाहिताः ।
तामादाय प्रवृत्तिं ते वासुकेः प्रत्यवेदयन् ॥१६॥
16. tataste pannagā ye vai jaratkārau samāhitāḥ ,
tāmādāya pravṛttiṁ te vāsukeḥ pratyavedayan.
16. tataḥ te pannagāḥ ye vai jaratkārau samāhitāḥ
tām ādāya pravṛttim te vāsukeḥ pratyavedayan
16. Then, those serpents who were verily attentive to Jaratkāru, taking that matter (his conditions/request), reported the situation to Vāsuki.
तेषां श्रुत्वा स नागेन्द्रः कन्यां तां समलंकृताम् ।
प्रगृह्यारण्यमगमत्समीपं तस्य पन्नगः ॥१७॥
17. teṣāṁ śrutvā sa nāgendraḥ kanyāṁ tāṁ samalaṁkṛtām ,
pragṛhyāraṇyamagamatsamīpaṁ tasya pannagaḥ.
17. teṣām śrutvā sa nāgendraḥ kanyām tām samalaṅkṛtām
pragṛhya araṇyam agamat samīpam tasya pannagaḥ
17. Having heard about their request, that lord of serpents, Vasuki, took that well-adorned daughter and went to the forest, near him (the sage).
तत्र तां भैक्षवत्कन्यां प्रादात्तस्मै महात्मने ।
नागेन्द्रो वासुकिर्ब्रह्मन्न स तां प्रत्यगृह्णत ॥१८॥
18. tatra tāṁ bhaikṣavatkanyāṁ prādāttasmai mahātmane ,
nāgendro vāsukirbrahmanna sa tāṁ pratyagṛhṇata.
18. tatra tām bhaikṣavat kanyām prādāt tasmai mahātmane
nāgendraḥ vāsukiḥ brahman na sa tām pratyagṛhṇata
18. There, O Brahmana, the lord of serpents, Vasuki, offered that daughter to that great sage as though she were alms, but the sage did not accept her.
असनामेति वै मत्वा भरणे चाविचारिते ।
मोक्षभावे स्थितश्चापि द्वन्द्वीभूतः परिग्रहे ॥१९॥
19. asanāmeti vai matvā bharaṇe cāvicārite ,
mokṣabhāve sthitaścāpi dvandvībhūtaḥ parigrahe.
19. asanāmā iti vai matvā bharaṇe ca avicārite
mokṣabhāve sthitaḥ ca api dvandvībhūtaḥ parigrahe
19. Indeed, having thought, "she is unnamed (to me), and her maintenance is unconsidered," and being also established in the state of seeking liberation, he became conflicted concerning her acceptance in marriage.
ततो नाम स कन्यायाः पप्रच्छ भृगुनन्दन ।
वासुके भरणं चास्या न कुर्यामित्युवाच ह ॥२०॥
20. tato nāma sa kanyāyāḥ papraccha bhṛgunandana ,
vāsuke bharaṇaṁ cāsyā na kuryāmityuvāca ha.
20. tataḥ nāma sa kanyāyāḥ papraccha bhṛgunandana
vāsuke bharaṇam ca asyāḥ na kuryām iti uvāca ha
20. Then, O son of Bhṛgu, he (the sage) asked the daughter's name. And he also said, "O Vasuki, I will not undertake her maintenance."
